From Capitalism to Cannibalism: How Robber Barons Hijacked the American Dream
Exposing Greed at the Top, Struggle at the Bottom, and the Vanishing Middle Class “It’s called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.”—George Carlin Introduction: Once upon a time, the American Dream was simple: work hard, earn fair pay, buy a home, raise a family, and retire with dignity. That dream has been mutilated—not by accident, but by design. What we now live…

Tiktok won't let me open comments without trying to make me install the app, but this is definitely the kindest of the apathetic comments left on it.
Watching a video with my dad of a team of Amazon workers asking for VTO in San Bernandino because of the smoke and wildfires and the comments are just as awful and depraved as you'd think. They range from "is the crisis in the room with us" to "just put my stuff in the box bitch".
This was 99% of the comments. 99% of the comments were absolutely apathetic to the workers and more concerned with their orders arriving on time than whether people with pre-existing conditions might end up hospitalized.
I am not shocked, tbh, I've seen that lack of empathy and care in many different facets throughout my life, but the fact remains that we have become so SELFISH as a society and as a country that we would rather get a box of junk in 1-3 business days than make sure that no one risks death or hospitalization to get it.

If you think that all workers in developed countries receive all the workers’ rights that they should have, you might want to rethink that statement. Large-scale corporations usually take advantage of their workers and deprive them of the rights they deserve. The brutal reality Amazon warehouse employees face while working during the holidays was revealed during interviews with Business Insider. It was revealed that during prime or peak season, Amazon warehouse employees are all required to work mandatory overtime during holidays, such as Black Friday. During most of the year, the warehouse employees work 40 hours a week but during peak season, they have to work 60 hours a week, which are 5 12- hour night shifts. The workers essentially become slaves during these periods and the work they have to do is extremely physically gruelling and exhausting. During peak season, workers are banned from taking holidays. They are only allowed to do so if there are any extenuating circumstances, however such exceptions to the embargo are extremely rare. Amazon employees work under extremely harsh conditions, in order to keep up with the hourly rate, workers cannot take bathroom breaks or they risk TOT, otherwise known as time off task points, that could be used to justify job termination. Amazon drivers have to deliver 200 parcels a day and they do not even have time to take bathroom breaks. This not only shows the lack of workers’ rights, it also highlights the denial to a basic human right for the workers. Amazon warehouse employees are forced to work even during the most treacherous of weather conditions. For example, workers are asked to report for duty at their respective fulfilment centres even during storms or severely snowy conditions. They were told that they would be given days off when weather conditions are drastic. However, that was never really the case. If workers are unable to report for duty because of how bad the weather conditions are to the point where they are unable to see while driving, they get hours deducted from their unpaid time off. These instances showcase how Amazon workers are treated like slaves and robots and are thus, denied basic workers’ rights.

Hey, it’s me, I’m one of those people!!  After only two years of working in an amazon warehouse and giving them everything I had, all in an effort to keep my job under the constant scrutinous gaze of upper management knowing that if I was in the bottom 5 percent I would be fired, I now have joint problems that are probably going to be lifelong!   I worked half my time there in Stow, which was less physical and involved operating the heavy machinery.  Though there was more time in between lifts the pace was breakneck, and it was always a bit frantic searching for a spot on the shelves to fit an item, as we were supposed to put at least one away every 60 seconds - not always easy when you have a giant box and the shelves are all overflowing with merchandise.   The way I had to angle my arm to work the throttle of the Order Picker was painful and unnatural, and that’s when my wrist pain started, because you spent most of your day turning that damn throttle.   After I had enough on the machines, I was switched to Receive, a much more physical position with constant movement.  I was burning in the realms of 3k calories a day, and that was just during my shifts.  It was a lot of repetitive movement - pivoting, opening boxes, reaching overhead to dispose of trash, climbing into and out of inventory cages to stack supplies and hauling those cages around so that the vehicles can pick them up.  We also unloaded trailers, sometimes palletized sometimes just mountains of poorly stacked boxes.   After my time working there - and with thanks to management who constantly demmanded that we work faster, especially on the trailers, even though often the slowdowns we encountered were due to virtual inventory issues or issues with the data entry in our scanners and not, you know, us being “slow” or “lazy” if we weren’t hitting rate it was always our fault, and we were pushed hard to work faster.   This push led to me being more and more careless with my form over time - and working this position was a lot of HEAVY freight, things that couldn’t go on the conveyor belts due to size like bedframes, giant umbrellas, flatpack furniture etc.  I would be throwing these 40-50 pound boxes into cages at breakneck paces, scanning them in as fast as I could while manager threatened to take away our breaks if we didn’t get the numbers up.   Well, I hurt my wrist.  Badly.  And the “doctors” at amazon discouraged me from filing a claim or going to doctors, claiming it would be better for me if they treated me there.  Like an idiot, and not wanting to lose my paycheck (as if I had to go to workmans comp I might not be able to work for a while) I stupidly went along with them  All so I could keep earning my rent and get my 4-5 “treatments” a day - pain meds, ice, heat and biofreeze to keep me numb enough to survive til the end of my shift.   Over the span of about two weeks my hand got worse and worse and my performance began to slip.  I was losing a lot of my productivity time to being treated at amcare - and while you’re not rated at amcare, fewer hours worked equaled a lower score at the end of the week and their tracking didn’t account for that.  In treatment or not, you still had to hit your rates and stay out of the bottom 5 percent.  During this time I went from being in pain while I worked to my right hand beginning to lose function, until I was barely able to hold my box cutter and was frequently dropping things at my station.  Eventually, in pain and unable to work anymore, I finally relented and went to the doctors.   I was put on an accomodation role, doing the glorified work of writing audits on the PIT operators.  All I was told was that I should go around to different parts of the building, and to do at least one audit every 15 minutes.  For a week or so I worked this role while having my medical appointments with the work comp docs and beginning physical therapy.   One day I went into work very sick - I’d had a resurgence of my insomnia and had several near sleepless nights.  It was midmorning and I was already considering going home - I had sat at one particular intersection nearby another coworker where traffic violations frequently occured, and where enough people passed by that we could both get in our audits without overlap.  There were probably about 20 people in the building doing this role, we were tripping over one another.   The almighty overlords of amazon, seeing us injured folk daring to sit down and occasionally glance at our phones (and let me just tell you in my time there I saw EVERY higher manager and HR person using their phones for personal reasons, frequently and sometimes openly.) fired us.   They said we had committed “time theft” and stolen the company’s time by - glancing at phones, sitting down while working, and not doing frequent enough audits - even though we had both followed the instructions given to us to the letter.  Never was it stated we weren’t allowed to sit, and we were given no opportunity to correct things, we were kicked out of the building that very day and I wasn’t even certain if they were going to let me get my things.  We were treated like criminals, like some sort of scum, after we had broken our bodies for their noble cause.   At the time I left the company, over half of my cohort were on “accomodations” due to workplace injury.  And our warehouse is, by and large, considered one of the “good” ones to work at.   I now have chronic tendinitis, joint issues and reoccuring issues with soft tissue injuries, and a deep, deep pain in my right wrist that flares up badly whenever I use it too much.  I can no longer do art as a career - I am now intending on simply finishing my queue and closing my comissions for good, because I just can’t draw like I used to, it hurts too much, and my ability to put out good painting and creative detailed works has been kneecapped by unrelenting pain.  I hurt my ankle badly not long after leaving amazon - I have always been an athletic person, but the wear and tear on my joints has left me prone to injury, enough so that I split a tendon DANCING and haven’t been able to walk since October.   Amazon is a hellhole of a place, and if you value your body, your sanity, and your life, you should avoid it at all costs.   They still haven’t been able to fix me entirely, and now if I use my right hand too much I still get a deep pain in my wrist.

If you see that Amazon is a great place to work, you know it was an article paid for by Amazon.
