WWII poster for Amoco, encouraging people to carpool to save gasoline for the war effort. The official slogan at the time was, "When You Ride Alone, You Ride with Hitler!" Posters depicted a Ghost-Fuehrer sitting on the front seat next to you which, of course, no one wanted.

The gas ration for those without extenuating circumstances was a mere three gallons a week; in early 1945 it was cut to two gallons, a move made by the U.S. government to force even the most diehard of motorists to finally give up, and to garage their vehicles for the duration.
