Yesterday we saw Sheridan Square nearly blacked out thanks to a tugboat workers' strike, which caused a fuel famine. Times Square suffered the same fate. Only street lamps were allowed to illuminate the area shortly after midnight, February 12, 1946. Theater marquees and huge electrical billboards were darkened as a result of the mayor's proclamation halting all amusements and closing most businesses.
