Headcanon that Shen Yuan was hotter than Shen Qingqiu, actually.

Despite your better judgement, you decided to get close and ask if he's okay.

He collapses into you almost immediately, crying about his head hurting and wanting his dad... Who wasn't chosen for this round but you figured there was a chance 007 could see what was happening, even if that might not be such a good thing...

You immediately go into some sort of parental mode, gently patting his head and assuring him everything would be fine. You even promised him that it'll go away. Probably just a fever anyways...

You somehow manage to stop him from crying and let him fall asleep in your arms... How adorable!

Although... Now you can't move because he was holding onto you so tightly... at least you could reposition yourself to sit down and have him sleep in your lap while you continued to pat his head.

And just like you thought, 007 saw it all and thanked you at the end of the round for caring about his kid. Maybe you'll be getting closer to him soon!

Just like with C00lkidd, you were convinced you were gonna die but noticed he sounded more sickly...

You calmly and quietly led him to one of the abandoned buildings and had him lay down on top of you to see what was up.

Surprisingly, he listened to you and grumbled about everything being too loud and hurting his head. Probably another fever like C00lkidd...

Regardless, you listen patiently and pat his head for comfort. He only groans in response and tells you he's not a baby but he doesn't pull away or attack either...

He actually ends up falling asleep on his own, mumbling something about not needing to be babied but the way he clung to you made you think otherwise.

When the round was done, you openly told the other survivors what happened but made sure they knew not to expect Bluudud to just be friendly for everyone.

At least you knew he saw you as a person of comfort now...

You were pretty much cornered and thought you were gonna die but... You got her hugging you for comfort instead.

Like Bluudud, she complained... A lot...

But either way, you somehow convinced her to find a quiet spot to let her handle whatever pains her with you gently reassuring her that everything will be fine.

She falls asleep the fastest, although mumbling about you being much better at this than the other killers which... Yeah, you could see why...

You end up muttering praises to her to help her sleep easier and you could've sworn you heard her call you "Mama" at one point.

You could've just about exploded... But you luckily didn't.

When the round was over, you made sure the other survivors knew to go easy on her. Because after that whole fiasco... You might've felt a sense of protectiveness wash over you and now needed to speak with 007 and Guest to see if this was really some parental feeling or if you were just acting like this because you remembered she's a kid... Of course it's option 1.

Azure

He caught you while you were working on a generator and while pleading with him, you noticed he couldn't seem to get anything comprehensible out.

Surprisingly, he didn't kill you, just dragged you off to a quiet spot where he could just use you as a living pillow.

You were confused but the tentacles holding you in his grip and his unusually high temperature told you all you needed to know before you started massaging his scalp and quietly telling him to take it easy.

What wasn't surprising was how dramatic he acted about it...

He was full-on telling you he's dying and shit while you're just over here trying to comfort him with his hat long discarded to avoid its annoying screeching.

The way he asks you not to tell anyone was simply too adorable to refuse, making you question how this is the same killer that made you fear death just a minute ago.

Once the round ends, you refuse to talk about what you were doing at all and accepting the suspicions of the other survivors... Why tho-

You knew immediately something was wrong when he wasn't using his spikes like normal.

You decided to call Jane over, being close enough to her to know they've been married.

She has you look for a quiet spot before leading John over there. Not like that was particularly hard.

Surprisingly, you both end up in a firm but not really painful hold, like he needed two pillows instead of just one.

He can't really get a thought out but Jane just guessed it was a simple fever and began instructing you to help her comfort him...

Was it weird that you enjoyed this? Nah, you'd probably be the only one thinking that...

But Jane was just happy for a moment like this and you didn't want to take that from her... She more than deserved it...

She's slightly disappointed when the round ends but thanks you for the help and you two proceed to talk about her past again by the docks.

Okay, but that isn't the main one, the big point is…

The Subway Fight

In this fight scene we get a lot of shots of the top of the train, some of the interior, but very few good ones of the front… until the very end, when they leave and it pulls away.

Yep, that's a Seoul Metro train alright. Specifically, according to Wikipedia, a third-generation 7000 series train, also known as "SR000" series.

They changed a number of details, probably to avoid copyright issues; for example the green stripes aren't quite in the same pattern, the logo is a bit bigger and simplified (you can also find the real train with a different earlier logo), the numbers are changed, but ultimately, yeah, clearly the same.

The real train was introduced to Seoul's metro line 7 between 2010 and 2012, and that's where it's stayed since. Apparently only seven trains were built due to various political issues, based on an article in a Korean Wiki. Apparently the trains actually belong to Incheon and Bucheon in different amounts; Seoul's metro is large and runs right into neighbouring cities, including line 7, so these trains are (part of) these cities's share of the line.

The interior in the show appears to be taken from a different train.

Almost all subway cars on Seoul's metro look similar on the inside, but here the detail of the triangular seat ends is notable. The best match I've been able to find is the 9000 series cars of line 9, some of which have similar triangles. (There don't appear to be any freely licensed pictures of the insides of Seoul's metro trains, even that Wiki appears to have used theirs under questionable circumstances, so you only get a link, sorry.)

Finally, let's go to the station:

The station is actually very well identified: Station 510 is written there clearly. All of Seoul's metro stations have a three or four digit code, where the first one or two digits indicate the line, and the last two the specific stop (counting from one end of the line). This is common in asian countries to help foreign visitors who may not know the local writing system. This station also has English letters identifying it as "Inland Resort". In real life, station 510 is on line 5, is called Bangwha, and is underground. That aside, though: I have not been able to identify the original station this is based on, but I would say it looks realistic.

These minor mismatches aside, the biggest unrealistic thing about the whole thing is… well, the demon fight, and isn't that such a boring answer? Sorry.

But just for completeness's sake: You should never get on top of a real-life Seoul subway train for any reason, not even to fight demons. Like a lot of newer subway systems, Seoul's subways are powered by overhead wires, energised at 1500 Volts, which means standing on top of one gives you a very good chance of getting a life-threatening electric shock. And even if the demons and the girls of Huntrix are magically immune from electric shocks (which would totally fit, that's my headcanon now), there's still just a mass of wires and in particular equipment holding the wires up that's annoyingly in the way at all times.

But overall: Very good trains, very good attention to detail, the biggest problem is that Rumi threw away her comfortable adorable Choo-choo pants.

MEG’S SOFT ANIMAL MANIFESTO 𓅮

so. the last chapter of my series, soft animal, has officially been posted. all 13 snapshots into this little world I created in my mind are yours now.

starting soft animal made me fall in love with creative writing again for the first time in years and I will forever be so beyond grateful to any of you who took the time to read all 50,000 (!!!) words of it. even if you only read a chapter or two, thank you. thank you thank you thank you. I love youuu.

now that the series is officially over, I wanted to do a little bonus post — a very chaotic, rambling “manifesto” with my thoughts, headcanons, general insights, etc. if that sounds like something you’re interested in, keep reading!

SPOILERS AHEAD — if you haven’t finished the series yet, stop now! you’ve been warned!! part 13 can be found here if you haven’t read it yet!!

this is obvious in the series masterlist, but in case you haven’t seen that, the title “soft animal,” as well as the final chapter’s plot structure, was inspired by the poem wild geese by mary oliver. some background on how I was inspired by the poem can be found here!

I started writing soft animal back in March, but the idea first came to me during a rewatch of s12/13 a few weeks before that. I’d been reading a lot of fanfiction around that time as well, and I kept finding myself imagining post-prison Spencer so differently than what I was seeing in the fanfic world. post-prison Spencer is so often written as this dominate, unfeeling, nearly robotic shell-of-a-human (or other end of the spectrum — he’s reduced down to solely his trauma and never given a chance to recover from it) and it just felt… I dunno, unrealistic to me, I guess? my brain started spinning with ideas on how to paint him in a different, more human light. i thought through a bunch of different scenarios for how he could possibly meet someone and fall in love during/after the prison arc, and my first few rough drafts tried out a bunch of different readers (there was a librarian, a bartender, and his temporary BAU replacement, to name a few). finally, I came up with the idea of a prison nurse, and thus, soft animal was born.

this story was always going to have a happy ending. i debated having them breakup for real and get back together down the line (what happened in pt 12 wasn’t a true breakup y’all lol just a fight and a few days of space), but I thought it might feel forced and it wasn’t really what I truly wanted to write about, so I trashed that idea pretty swiftly. but at no point did I even consider for a second that they wouldn’t end up together in the end.

I did, however, go back and forth on how far into their relationship I wanted the series to go, and ended up deciding that I wanted the final chapter to feel soft and cushy and somewhat open-ended while also giving readers the satisfaction of knowing they’re in a good place and planning for their future — hence that final moment (💍🎁). I almost wrote the actual proposal itself in, but I couldn’t get it right, so I left it as it was — and tbh, I like it way better that way. you know it’s happening, you feel the same hope she feels, and the same comfort she feels, too, because she doesn’t have any question in her mind over their future together. tldr, in case it isn’t obvious — the ring is in his pocket because he’s going to propose that same night, it just happens off-page.

if anyone feels like reader forgave spencer too easily for leaving, I get that. I realllly get that. but in my mind, the fight and his leaving is heavily contextualized by his trauma, and reader’s response is heavily informed by her background as a prison nurse. she knows he wasn’t himself when he did any of that, and she’s an excellent judge of character. she forgave him and took him back because she loves the version of him that came back, and she knows that’s the real spencer. but if you feel differently, that’s super valid. he said some awful things and abandoning her for days was notttt cool!! but again, context is key, and I think her choice to forgive him and take him back is super valid as well.

I started writing this series when I was going through a lot in my personal life. it’d been ages since I’d written something just for me, especially not something creative, and starting this series really helped me find myself again. I almost forgot how much I love writing — how cathartic it is, how exciting and frustrating and calming and wonderful it can be — and I’m so grateful to soft animal, and to all of you, for that. when I posted fluorescent mercy, I think I had, like, 7 followers. I expected it to get maaaaybe like 50 notes max if I got lucky with the tags. now there’s over 500 (?!!) of you here hanging out with me — I can’t even wrap my head around that.

spencer has a thing for seeing her wear his glasses. it turns him on beyond belief. she discovered it by accident (she put them on as a joke one night when he misplaced them and she found them first) and she has absolutely weaponized it ever since.

she cuts his hair. not always — he goes to a barbershop sometimes. but when he’s been too busy to care for himself, he’ll sit on a stool in the kitchen and let her trim it.

spencer reads aloud to her in bed, sometimes nonfiction, sometimes poetry, sometimes just to hear her say, “Keep going,” in that sleep-heavy voice she uses when she’s halfway under.

they text like total weirdos. spencer sends her long rambly facts and screenshots of online crossword puzzles with exact timestamps of how long they take him. she sends him chaotic messages at unpredictable intervals that say things like today’s lunch is ✨sad✨ and guess which inmate bit me today. they never have actual conversations via text — spencer could never — it’s always just random one-off messages when they’re thinking of each other.

he got her a new stethoscope for Christmas. it’s her favorite color and engraved with her initials. generally, every gift he gives her is incredibly thoughtful (and she tears up almost every time). spencer reid, king of thoughtful gifts.

he has a favorite sound she makes in bed. he’s never told her that, but every time she lets it out — a breathy little gasp that breaks into a whimper — he groans low in his throat and starts moving a little deeper.

they have an unspoken agreement to undress each other slowly. every button, every inch of skin revealed, is an opportunity to touch, to look, to pause. they savor the undressing almost as much as the sex.

and here are some final trivia/tidbits/notes I’ll leave you with:

my personal favorite chapters overall are: fluorescent mercy, synodic curve, convergence zone, dark matter, and soft animal (ch13). but my favorite chapters to write were definitely verbal impulse and synodic curve. plz feel free to shout out your fave chapters in the comments! I’m dying to know!

the hardest chapters to write were fluorescent mercy (writing something bottled inside the prison infirmary was so hard plus it needed to set up the entire story and at least semi-accurately portray prison!reid so it took me forever) and long division (I hate angst with no happy ending so even though I knew it was just for 1 chapter, i still struggled baaadly. originally the make up scene at the beginning of the final chapter was at the end of long division because I couldn’t stand to keep them apart, but I forced myself to let the angst simmer a little longer so that the final chapter would feel more satisfying). I also spent a lot of time writing the final chapter, trying to make it perfect and figuring out just how deep into the story I should go.

the juicing oranges thing from convergence zone comes from a real-life experience I had with my grandmother once. honestly, reader’s parents’ general attitude towards her job and her relationship was heavily inspired by my real life grandparents (my parents rock, but my dad’s parents… oof. they can be tough to please. and they do random shit like show up at your house unannounced with fresh fruit for juicing as if that was something you’d literally ever expressed interest in doing before (it was not)

the sex scene in blind contour was originally SO much longer than it ended up being and was a lotttt smuttier lol. when I went back and reread it a few days after finishing the initial draft, I was like goddamn was i ovulating when I wrote this??? wtf. it just didn’t fit that moment, if that makes sense. so I toned it down to what it is now. but I’m saving some of the original ideas from that first draft for future (non-soft animal related) one shots lollll bc it was 🥵

I deadass cried when I woke up the morning after posting fluorescent mercy and seeing it had over 100 notes in less than 12 hours (granted I had like 7 followers when I posted it so I had extremely low expectations lol)

I will forever be mad at myself for using first person instead of second person. when I wrote the first couple chapters it was my first time writing anything creative in a while (and my first time writing fanfiction since like 2015) so I was veryyyy rusty and just used what came naturally to me, but I’m still mad about it to this day lol. major regret tbh but oh well, it is what it is!

I wrote all of this in a cold room, a heat pad on me (because period cramps) and at 3am so any mistakes will be edited out as soon as I'm aware of it.

ꕥ Is definitely a tits kinda guy, doesn't matter how big or how small they are. He'll definitely play with them in some way during doing the you know what.

ꕥ Feels like you can take him and his size better because of your plush body. Has a size kink and likes seeing it bulge a bit when he's inside you.

ꕥ You're just so soft and warm, he wants something away from what he usually feels doing his job. Not really that touchy but he gets quite clingy within closed doors.

John "Soap" MacTavish

ꕥ Soap is a Golden Retriever boyfriend through and through. He's energetic, loyal and really affectionate.

ꕥ He's a lighthearted flirt at first because he doesn't wanna scare you off but damn does he gradually get bolder over time.

ꕥ Very hands on, touchy, and could be clingy at times unless you don't consent him, secretly always finding new ways to touch you.

ꕥ A sucker for cheek kisses, lips are his favorite but he can't help but break out a wide grin whenever you kiss his cheek. Can't help but feel kinda manly whenever you do.

ꕥ Adores making you laugh, no matter how stupid your sense of humor is he will absolutely say that joke if it gets a laugh out of you. Would be concerned if you had a dark sense of humor but will eventually get used to it. To describe it, hearing you laugh makes his heart feel full like in a content domestic way.

ꕥ Alejandro is definitely a flirt, a very bold on at that. He's quite forward when it comes to liking someone so yeah.

ꕥ He lives for it when you boss him around. That being said, he isn't picky about body type or any of the sort.

ꕥ Will teach you Spanish if you don't know any, definitely prioritizes the curse words and laughs whenever you jokingly call him pendejo.

ꕥ Wouldn't mind you teaching him your own culture and mother tongue. Bonus points if it's similar to his.

ꕥ Has Spanish nicknames for you because I imagine his own culture is important to him.

ꕥ Another Golden Retriever boyfriend. This man is just loving and dotting, very husband material.

ꕥ Loves chubby women, has a soft spot for them and just likes holding them.

ꕥ He's definitely used to the insecurity that comes with the body, also doesn't get why such beauty standards are even in place. Has and would fuck the insecure out of you again if he had to. (It's in a very gentle and loving manner)

ꕥ If you hold him in your arms, he'd be absolutely living for it. He already has had a long day and being honest he hasn't had many lovers that went far so having you care in this way about him would have him wrapped around your finger.

ꕥ Worships the ground you walk on. That's it.
