Okay first of all, process, as always:

I drew this in one day hahaha....Actually really fun! I haven't finished anything in almost a month, and haven't painted for even longer, so I'm kinda dying at the fact that 18th century George Russell got me motivated 😭 Sometimes when painting, I realize I have free will and can actually just start painting over the lineart, and that's the best moment of every drawing process 🙏

Also I'm very proud of his face!!! I've said before, but art progression is such a weird thing. You'll keep repeating to your self "I'm no good at [insert art thing.]" And then randomly realized you can in fact do it. That's me with drawing real people's faces 😭 I'm just so shocked I got his face pretty good in one try!!!

Okay about the pose and quote. God its so fun to misappropriate quotes for my own evil deeds. Both of these are from this one officer from the Revolution: Banastre Tarleton. Idk, I randomly saw his painting in a history video, and it's stuck in my mind ever since. And then yesterday, bcs I spent a lot of time looking at George, I'm like "hey you know what he kinda reminds me of-" and thus we have this.

I just found that quote about him from some historian to be funny, so I put it as a caption, as I would with Napoleon. This won't be an AU by any means but. I think if George was in the Revolution, he'd be the most stereotypical, evil British villain in American media type guy ever. And Tarleton is kinda that guy tbh, to the point where him and others like Arnold Benedict are the poster boys of evil Revolution guys. He even has a mocking nickname! "Bloody Tarleton/Ban", very "Osama bin Russell," no? 😭

Some notable moments from Tarleton's campaign that I think fit George: Apparently killed a bunch of American soldiers after they surrendered, making sure everyone was dead(😭😭), threatened to burn an American general's house down to make him surrender and then took him hostage, went toe to toe with George Washington himself and Washington even taunted him and Tarleton got a shot in, has a helmet named after him(very slayful.)

Your first mistake was underestimating the appeal of a killer.

The book—your book—was never supposed to blow up like this. A bloody, intimate little crime novel, loosely inspired by the slasher-flavored chaos you’d somehow made a life out of. It was supposed to be niche, a cult hit at best. But now? Every other day, there’s a new notification about someone thirsting after your fictional killer. Reviews drool over his sadism, his devil-may-care attitude, the way he breaks his victims like it’s a love language.

They have no idea he’s real. That he kisses you with the same mouth he uses to threaten lives.

Ronin thinks it’s hilarious.

“‘The Devil’s Butcher could get it, tbh,’” he reads aloud one night, cackling over a tweet on your phone. “Aw, sweetheart—why didn’t ya tell me I had fans? Coulda started a damn fan club. Goreboy Nation. Merch n’ everythin’.”

You roll your eyes, shoving his face away from your screen. “You’re already insufferable. If you start selling t-shirts, I’m out.”

Ronin just hums, teeth grazing your neck—playful. Sharp. “Nah, ya ain’t goin’ anywhere, darlin’. Face it: ‘m the only devil who’s gonna put up with ya.”

You let him think that. Let him croon against your skin like the world itself belongs to him—like you belong to him. (He isn’t wrong.)

But the thing is, while the fans are fun and the money’s nice, you know better than anyone that obsession isn’t cute.

So when you first notice the messages—subtle at first, just a little too knowing—you don’t think much of it. You’ve been stalked before. Hell, your boyfriend is a stalker if you squint a little. What’s one more weirdo with boundary issues?

But then your inbox gets weird.

The stalker doesn’t ask normal fan questions. They pick apart the details—the parts you shouldn’t know, shouldn’t be able to write about. Things only Ronin would recognize. Things you shouldn’t have access to.

They know too much.

“You think it’s a cop?” you ask one night, lounging on Ronin’s ratty couch while he sharpens one of his knives.

He snorts. “Please. If the cops were that competent, I’d be in cuffs already.” He tilts his head, glancing at you through dark lashes. “You worried, baby?”

Worried? Not exactly. Not when your boyfriend has a body count higher than his IQ.

You shrug. “I can handle it.”

Ronin grins, wolfish and bright. “I know ya can.”

The first time you mention the stalker, Ronin laughs.

You do get it now..

"Aw, c’mon, darling," he drawls over the phone, voice honey-sweet with a razor’s edge. "You’re tellin’ me some pencil-idiot creep thinks they can rattle you? After all we’ve been through? Cute."

He’s not worried—why would he be? You’ve survived him, after all.

To Ronin, there’s no comparison. Some obsessive fan sending you weird, clingy emails and waiting outside your apartment doesn’t rank high on his list of threats. Not when you’ve faced worse and walked away with your heart still beating—his, too, if he’s feeling sentimental.

You’re not worried either. Not really.

You’ve danced with the devil and kissed him in an alley soaked with blood. Some guy with a parasocial complex doesn’t exactly make your skin crawl—not in the way it should. But it’s annoying. Persistent. And starting to piss you off.

At first, it’s small things. A note on your windshield after a signing. Flowers sent to your P.O. box with no return address. Emails signed Your biggest fan that come in the dozens—rambling, incoherent praise. Nothing that feels threatening, not really. Just… there.

You don’t mention it again for weeks. Ronin’s busy, anyway. Uptown’s been keeping him occupied—more bodies in Purgatory, more sinners to crucify. You don’t blame him for being distracted. If anything, you like that he’s got bloodier things on his mind.

Still, when he catches you laughing over a particularly unhinged email, he makes a sound low in his throat. Dangerous. Interested.

"That your little stalker again?"

"Yeah," you say, spinning lazily in your office chair. "Dude thinks we’re soulmates or something. Poor guy has no clue what he’s up against."

"Mm." A pause. His voice dips, velvet-soft. "They better not touch you, baby."

You smile, tilting your head. "What, you gonna rip their heart out for me?"

Ronin chuckles, low and indulgent. "Only if ya let me."

The first time the stalker crosses the line, it’s almost funny. Almost.

You find the package outside your door one night—a plain cardboard box, taped neatly shut. For a second, you think it’s something you ordered. But there’s no address. No label.

Inside is a photograph.

It’s you.

You, sitting at your favorite café last week—head down, lost in thought, writing notes for your next novel. Taken through a window, your face blurred slightly by the glass. Beneath the photo, there’s a single line of text.

"You’re even prettier in person."

"Jesus Christ," you mutter, tossing it on the counter.

Ronin doesn’t find it funny.

"You didn’t tell me they were that close," he says when you send him a picture.

"It’s fine," you reply. "They’re harmless. Just desperate."

"Yeah? Let’s see how harmless they are when I wrap my hands ‘round their throat."

His protectiveness is hot—obviously—but you don’t want to wind him up too much. This isn’t his mess to clean. Not yet.

The next time, they get bolder.

I saw you tonight.

You glance toward your window. It’s locked—has been since Ronin waltzed into your life and made paranoia a love language. Still, your skin prickles.

"Still harmless, darling?" Ronin asks the next morning.

You know what he wants—to unleash that wicked temper, to make a statement in blood. It’s sweet, in its own fucked-up way. But you tell him the same thing as always.

"I’ve got it under control."

He hums. Doesn’t argue. But there’s something sharper in his silence.

It escalates three days later.

You’re walking home from a late-night grocery run—plastic bags heavy with cup noodles and the cheap, trashy snacks you practically live on. The city hums around you, neon lights flickering in and out of focus.

And then you feel it.

That creeping sensation of eyes on your back.

You don’t panic. Panic is for people who haven’t kissed a serial killer and walked away grinning. You duck into a side street instead, cutting through a back alley to lose them.

Footsteps follow.

A thrill rolls through your stomach—part fear, part excitement. If this idiot thinks you’re an easy target, they’ve got another thing coming.

"Y’know," you say casually, turning on your heel, "if you wanted an autograph, you could’ve just—"

They lunge.

Wrong move.

Your elbow slams into their ribs before they can touch you. The plastic bags hit the ground, scattering instant ramen everywhere. You twist, slamming your knee into their gut next—hard enough to make them stumble.

The guy isn’t much—skinny, twitchy, desperate. He gasps, scrambling back as you advance, heart hammering with adrenaline.

"You’ve been watching me for weeks," you murmur, stepping closer. "Did you really think I wouldn’t notice?"

He doesn’t answer. Just wheezes.

Pity. You were hoping for more of a fight.

Ronin shows up at your apartment less than an hour later, eyes bright with anticipation.

"Where’s my new friend?" he drawls, cracking his knuckles.

You tilt your head toward the bathroom. "Tied up. Not much fun, though."

His grin sharpens. "Fuckin’ knew ya had it in ya, baby."

When he sees the guy—slumped against your shower wall, wrists bound tight—Ronin practically purrs. He crouches low, brushing a blood-specked thumb across the stalker’s cheek, and laughs.

"Oh, sweetheart," he murmurs, eyes flicking to you. "Ya really are somethin’ else."

"You’re disappointed I didn’t let you have him first," you tease.

Ronin leans back on his heels, gaze lingering on your face like you’re his favorite kind of crime scene. "Ain’t disappointed. Proud of ya."

It’s the truth—you can feel it in the heat of his stare, the way his smile curves sharper. He’s proud. Because you didn’t need him to save you. Because you’re just as much a monster as he is.

And God, if that doesn’t make him love you more.

By the time Ronin’s finished with the guy, there isn’t much left. Nothing that’ll be missed.

"Y’know," he muses later, lounging on your bed with his bloodied hands behind his head, "if anyone else so much as looks at ya funny, I’m takin’ their eyes as a souvenir."

You roll your eyes, crawling onto the mattress beside him. "Possessive much?"

His smile widens—feral and unrepentant. "Always. Ya like it, don’t lie."

notes: ANOTHER ONE. ☝️. i decided for once to not write abt a ridiculously niche character and i loveee the idea of clark in college so here it is. he is so cute. ok enjoy! 😚 (border is @cursed-carmine !)

you sit half asleep in the big lecture hall. you’re up front, of course, but that doesn’t negate your hesitation about enjoying this class. your counselor said all freshmen have to take an introductory writing course. so, even despite your attempts to opt out, here you are. bright and early. 8 am.

you ‘rub your eyes’ for the millionth time in the past 5 minutes, trying to at least appear awake for your professor. just as you feel yourself dozing off again, you’re jolted awake by a door awkwardly slammed open, and the professor’s curt response.

“kent. i’d hoped by the second week of the semester you’d figure out your way to the class you’re enrolled in. yet here we are.”

your stomach churns for him. out of the 4 sessions you’ve had of this class, he’s been late well…4 times. and clearly on accident, too. poor guy.

you hear him mutter a bashful apology as he fumbles to find a seat. it isn’t until you hear a ‘pst’ that you look up. it’s him.

“is this seat taken?” clark whispers politely. you shake your head softly moving your bag from the seat next to you.

“thanks,” he smiles and quietly settles in.

the rest of the lecture drones on, yet you can’t help but notice how attentive clark is to this kind of thing. despite the professor’s clear…lack of interest in clark, he behaves like a star student. yeah, that’s no act. he’s actually just really into the class.

you look between your notes periodically, noticing how your half page of notes pales in comparison to clark’s nearly two. how can he even take so many notes on apa citations? you think to yourself.

class ends and you swiftly pack up your things, hoping that the campus coffee shop will aid your lack of sleep combined with a brutal freshman schedule. just as you’re about to leave, he grabs your attention.

“thanks for the seat, by the way. i think if i cause a disturbance like that again i might be out for real,” clark smiles packing up his bag.

“yeah, he didn’t seem too happy,” you laugh softly. “do you just oversleep often or something?”

“something like that,” he smiles, “speaking of uh…oversleeping..i was wondering if you’d maybe wanna go get a coffee..? with me…?”

you pause for a moment, surprised. before you even get a second to formulate a reply, clark is rambling once again.

“i mean it’s totally fine if not i just thought you looked tired…not in a bad way at all! just like…well it’s 9:30 and we’re all tired. you look great, by the way,” he smiles, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.

you cover your mouth slightly, trying to stifle a giggle. how could someone so handsome be so utterly unsure of himself. “i’d like that,” you smile.

clark blinks. “really? i mean…you’re serious?” he asks genuinely.

good lord.

you smile laughing softly. “yeah clark, i’m serious. i was actually about to go get some. it’d be nice to have someone with me.”

he lights up, smiling like a fool. “great. yeah awesome. amazing,” he curses himself under his breath for being so inarticulate. if only you knew how you make him fumble. “should we head? to the coffee shop, i mean.”

you laugh softly shaking your head. “let’s go,” you smile and lead the way, with him trailing behind like a little puppy.

goodness, she’s so pretty, clark thinks to himself for the millionth time. ever since he saw you during orientation, he’s been building up the courage to ask you out. and now you two are drinking coffee together? that’s gotta be a good sign.

he continues attentively listening to you, hanging onto your every word. he’d been drawn to you by your beautiful face—that’s not in question. but what really made him head over heels is what’s happening right now. as you continue to talk and clark continues to listen, he only falls harder and harder. smart, beautiful, and maybe, just maybe interested in him—was he dreaming?

“i just really don’t understand how you’re so into that class, clark. i mean, i feel like it’s a total waste of time,” you sigh softly sipping your coffee.

“what? come on you can’t be serious,” he leans in slightly over the small table. “writing is one of the best ways we can communicate. can you imagine what life would be like without it? it’d be a whole lot less interesting, that’s for sure,” he smiles leaning back in his chair, pleased with his response.

“it’s a 101 class, clark. half the information is probably stuff we leaned back in high school,” you smile.

“yeah well…,” he thinks for a moment. huh. he smiles to himself. “okay yeah you might be right, but still, it’s a good class.”

you giggle softly and sip your coffee. with your eyes averted, you don’t notice the blush on clark’s cheeks seeing you smile like this.

you pause looking to him. “date..?”

he looks up from the check, evaluating his choice of words. “oh…did you not think-,” he sighs softly, rubbing his eyes under his glasses. “i’m sorry i just thought..you thought…maybe-“

“i did,” you smile softly, “i just wasn’t sure you felt that way..”

before you can even elaborate, he interjects, as if your comment is simply unbelievable to him. “are you serious? how could i not feel that way? i mean, for starters, you’re beautiful, obviously. but you’re also smart, funny, kind…can i be honest?”

you nod softly.

“i’ve been building up the courage to ask you out on an actual date for like weeks now. i just…i assumed you’d say no, honestly..”

you laugh softly. he furrows his brows slightly. “what..?” he smiles curiously.

The Problem With the Eddsworld Fandom's Depictions of Red Leader/Future Tord, A Disabled Perspective

Disability is a contentious concept for most of society, with most either treating us with disgust, confusion, refusing to treat us as human, or to see our struggles as what they are. Ableism affects all people in many different ways, but as someone who focuses a lot of my energy in fandom spaces, the pervasiveness of ableism with how media and their fans interpet and react to disabled characters is a very personal situation for me. While many may argue that an ignorance to these topics in fiction has little bearing on real life, the prevalance of these tropes have echoed and led to feelings of othering for many disabled people, and oftentimes support the same notions that lead to the day-to-day ableism in our own personal lives.

In recent years, I have experienced this most often with the prevalance of negative disability tropes perpetrated by fanfiction surrounding the character of Tord, also known under the alias of Red Leader in some fanworks. It is a problem not just common in the Eddsworld fandom. A more recent, and much larger fandom in Mouthwashing also shares a common trend of repeated ableism in fan depictions and interpretarions of disabled characters. Most fan creators are unaware of these tropes and the harm that they cause, but as a disabled person, I am unable to ignore it.

For context on myself, you can call me Fish. Get it? Or"fish"eus? I like to think I'm funny. I am a mentally ill, disabled, and neurodivergent creative who has niche interests in representation in media and the intersection of intersectionality and fandom spaces. I experience chronic pain due to a multitude of conditions, all of which are invisible disabilities. I am NOT an amputee or have a facial difference, like the character I am analyzing. I can only speak based on my own research in my attempts to portray him positively, but I want to mainly focus on the ableist tropes I see and the real life effects they have. That is something I CAN focus on, because I've been dealing with it for years from conditions that came onset later in my life. I will be speaking from that perspective, but will be doing my best to try to educate on what I do know from my research to help authors, artists, and creatives create a better portrayal of him in fanworks.

The most common tropes I see with him are what I will call "The Disabled Villain", "The Innacurate Disability", and "The Ignored Disability". There are a few tropes in each, but for ease of organization (and the sake of your (and my) time), I will be talking about them together in these sections. There are also overlaps in many, but I will define the main issues with them.

The Disabled Villain

James Bond, Wonder Woman, The Witches. You name it. You have most likely seen this trope at work in cinema. A malicious evil-doer is revealed to have a "horrid" face symbolic of the true evil within their soul, while the beautiful, able-bodied hero is meant to stop them. It's a trope as old as time, one that goes back to even Plato. Tropes are tropes, people subvert them, so a few cases down the line may be excusable. But that has not been the case For many years, the most prevalent form of representation for disabled people was in these villains. Imagine if the only representation you had for yourself was narratives surrounding how the way you look or what your disability is and have it only be equated to evil people. It leads to a villainization of disabled people. People react to facial differences with disgust, because they are "shown" that it is "evil", or "ugly", or equal to being a horrible person. As stated by The Nora Project, "According to the book Disabilities: Insights from Across Fields and Around the World, disabled students are two to three times more likely to be bullied in comparison to their nondisabled classmates. The disabled villain trope contributes to this phenomenon in overt and subtle ways. For example, the trope implicitly encourages fear of disability and difference, while validating, and even elevating, those who fight against the evil, Disabled Villain. Bullying based on fear and disdain is almost a natural consequence of the trope when viewed in this light". Another big issue is that disabled characters have not been given space to exist outside of villainy. There are not many complex narratives surrounding them. This leads to our disabilities being downplayed, us being dehumanised, and we are seen more like props in real life, or simply tools to achieve a message in a narrative.

Tord's disability is never explicitly shown in the show. It is something more prevalent in Fanon, specifically in fanworks that focus on the "Future" era of the show's timeline, where the narrative and outside discussions on the show implies a high tech society, potentially dystopian, potentially a consequence of his actions. These ideas have taken a life of their own in the fandom, with many creators fully expressing these ideas. The problem arises when Red Leader falls in line with this trope. In many works, he is the sole disabled character, a figure of pure evil, or given little nuance in the narrative. Artists illustrate his scars as bright red, crimson, or, in TBATF, green. For some reason. In this way, they attempt to highlight the villainy by equating him with common symbols of evil: facial differences and disabilities. Unfortunately, these are not just symbols. These are conditions and scars that real people have, which the fandom tends to ignore in favor of dramatization.

This was a trope I most commonly saw explored in fanfiction when I first joined in 2016/17. The show, unfortunately, subtly and accidentally perpetrated it by having the only character visibly and irreparably "damaged" by the giant robot fight be Tord, despite the fact that Tom, who had a whole missile directed at him and got buried under a house, was fine with at most a leg injury and a cut on his arm. Luckily, we have grown past the need for ableist tropes, and the faults of the show can be left in the past!

... Not.

Disability tropes have simply evolved in how the fandom treats Tord. Even if it is now done with more consciousness and sympathy towards his character, ignorance still prevails. Let's talk about common pitfalls people fall into when writing him.

The Inaccurate Disability

In fanon perception, Red Leader is an amputee with a high tech prosthesis and a facial difference resulting from burn scars. Like many disabled characters, he suffers from a collective fandom lack of research. But never fret! That is what I have subjected myself to for the past four years, so your friendly neighborhood disabled Fish can tell you how to right your fandom wrongs! Just kidding! Take this as a pointer, and do your own research.

As is common with fictional prosthetics, his arm prosthetic is treated as a perfect fix for his amputation. It acts just like, if not better than an actual arm. The issue with this is that is isn't realistic. Yes, I know, I'm criticising Eddsworld fanfiction for not being realistic. STAY WITH ME HERE. Once again, if it was one instance, or a few, that explored prosthetics being incredibly functional in science-fiction, then it could be a cool concept. But when every sci-fi work has it, then that is no longer a concept. That is a misconception. And I have interacted with people who believed that prosthetics were 100% functional! The thing is, like all disability aids, it does not suddenly make us able-bodied. For example, I have ear defenders that I wear when I experience pain within my ears. But that does not mean my hearing will now become normal, and I will no longer experience pain from the sound I'm hearing. What WILL happen is that I will straight up not hear you. Like, literally. Can you repeat that? I had my ear defenders on. Oh, you're saying that my ear defenders aren't prosthetics and are not a fair comparison? Well, that's fair, but take this as an illustration of a disability aid and how they differ from able-bodied experiences. Also, many prosthetic users do many things without their prostheses, and some even prefer NOT to wear them. Blogs that explicitly cover disabled representation, such as @/cripplecharacters, have posts that cover WHY many amputees are not fans of this trope. The problem comes with that it erases disability, and yet also treats us like we are given a space at the table of representation. It's just another way that authors avoid actually doing research.

Other things that people tend to ignore are how burn scars, or any scars, would not only appear on a character, but also affect them. I have seen, aside from skin tones that looked like they were picked out of a crayon box instead of what would appear on a person, teeth exposed, wounds that look as if they are fresh from the explosion YEARS after they occurred, and what I like to call "paper shredder" scars. Because instead of them looking like burn or shrapnel scars, it appears as if his skin was put through a shredder. Once again, another consequence of the show's at most-30 second scene with questionable decisions that made massive ripples in the fandom. With the injuries Tord received, it is most likely that he would have two kinds of injuries: a burn on 18% of his body (minimum, based on rule of 9s), and/or shrapnel scars from debris. While shrapnel scars would manifest as darker scars, the burn scar would likely be a hypertrophic scar, as "70% of patients develop hypertrophic scars following burns" (Finnerty et. al). The scars, when healed, are warm toned on the boundaries of their areas and cool in between. When on a pale skintone, they are not too dissimilar, and would therefore not have such a drastic color difference as seen on skin. They would also not go down to the bone or skin, as that would be a completely different kind of injury, and are also commonly done to make him look "scarier", which then aids the Disabled Villain trope. It also treats these scars and injuries more like a work of fiction, rather than something that many real people have experienced, adding to continuous misinterpretations of real life disabilities and facial differences.

For writers wanting to include consequences of burns, what would be more likely to be affected are his hearing, vision, and nerves on the right side of his face, as burn scars can go as deep as nerve endings. Also, burn scars, especially third degree burns, require treatments, such as burn-specific skincare. Scars, especially burn scars, can affect you and become disabling. For artists, the main thing I don't see artists do is draw him with damaged hair follicles. Burn scars damage the scalp and eyebrows, preventing hair growth. I am sorry, but he would not still have fluffy, luscious hair. Do not kill me. He just wouldn't. And if you are saying that he had it in the show, I can't hear you because my ear defenders are on, but I hope you heard me, as we've gone over that the show is inaccurate and we should do our own research.

Even well intentioned authors and artists ignore many aspects of the disabilities he would likely have!

Which brings us to the last trope...

The Ignored Disability

Many well meaning people intend to give him nuance by trying to avoid the Disabled Villain trope. Accidentally, however, they end up completely ignoring his disabilities instead.

Just like the high-tech prosthetic, the real disabling aspects of having a disability are at best rarely mentioned. I have seen, in some fanworks, that he goes straight from amputation to having a prosthetic. And that is where his disability ends. Because the prosthetic ends up being a fix-all situation. Authors refuse, or forget, to include aspects of amputation, such as the healing process, stump or phantom pain. Artists will cover up his scars with a helmet or a mask, another trope that undermines his disabilities and attempts to brush it under the rug. I understand that there is a discomfort for able-bodied authors in thoroughly exploring how a character feels about their disability. That is something I think we should. Avoid. If you're not familiar with the experience of being that minority, you do not need to add commentary on it. And if you do, and it just falls into more negative tropes, I will send a salmon cannon at you (/j). However, I do not agree with brushing every disabling aspect of his life under the rug.

People can assume it's not a problem, like it isn't something blatantly apparent. But, if you assume that disability and being disabled is not a "big thing", you end up where your medication is denied because your insurance refuses to see your common procedure as not a necessary medical intervention because you're "too young". And that is not fiction. That is what inspired me to write this essay, because the day that I got that news was the same day I sat down and told myself that I needed to share my perspective on the perception of disabled characters by honing in on one of my favorite characters and how the fandom treated him.

Disabled characters deserve to be included in media, disability and all, with care given to how their life would operate as a result and what they would experience with their specific disability. That's why many people recommend sensitivity readers who can give proper insight upon that disability and can advise people to properly portray it.

But if you cannot afford or access that resource, what can you do?

Fish's Non-Cohesive List of Ways I Tried to Write Tord as a Non-Amputee Without a Facial Difference

Do research!! The more you are to try to understand what you are writing about, the less you are to misinterpret or misrepresent it.

Look into resources that focus on portraying disabled characters, especially with those you wish to write about. Read blogs, research tropes that are common in disabled characters, and hell, read medical journals. They can provide great insight (<< nerd who likes reading medical journals)

Include more disabled characters. Make the other boys be disabled! Want to be canon compliant? Create OCs who have disabilities! I have a bunch! It's 2024! Be cringe and be free! The character's disability would go against the traditional narrative form of "usefulness"? I'm an animator who can't wear headphones and a theatre performer who can't physically handle the volume of a band. And yet, we find ways to persist, to exist. We will always find our way to live in the way we want to, in whatever way we can.

Look into disability activism. Learn the difference between the Medical Model and Social Model of disability. Know what an invisible disability is. Listen to us when we say that we don't want to be treated as special or an inspiration for simply living (inspiration porn). The more you are aware of what we struggle in real life, the more aware you will be to not repeat those mistakes in your fiction.

Write what you can. Highlight little talked about aspects of having a burn scar or being an amputee, such as the recovery, or treatment for the chronic pain, or how different he would be in battle due to decreased depth perception. As a disabled author, I have personally touched on the experience of gaining a disability later in life, and how he copes with it. Now, not all of y'all can do that. But that is a personal experience I do have, and it is something I have highlighted in my own work. So, while I couldn't tell you the ins and outs of having a burn scar or a prosthetic arm, I could describe the shock and frustration that comes with suddenly experiencing difficulties, or even being unable to do what you had done before.

I ask that, if you are willing to do better, or to start on the right foot, you take what I have written, reflect on it, and treat disabled characters, and in turn, disabled people, better from here on out.

Fiction is not reality, but the way we deal with it is reflective of who we are and what we believe. The boundary for our own personal being does not suddenly stop within fiction. When we interact and interpret it and create for it, it is integral that we remain conscious that bigotry runs rampant, albeit often as an unseen force, within fandom spaces, and do our best to counteract that.

I have doubts that the new eddisode will treat this topic with the same respect. I hope you can all go forward with what you have read in this WAY LONGER than I expected essay, and do what those grown British men cannot. Even if they erase it, retconn it, or do not treat it with respect, let's all go forward and do better!

AAAAAA tysm Grace!!!! Though I am so so so sorry for how rambly and long this post is gonna be, but you just asked me abt one of my brainrots!! I will answer your question but also talk about my history alignments and AUs in general LOL

But if I'm making comparisons of F1 drivers and historical figures, my brain kinda forces me to make it an AU because I'm like "this needs to make absolute sense historically and contextually.)

So, tbh of the four historical AUs that float around my brain, only two of them are really specifically about certain historical figures. The four are: Nandopoleon(About how Fernando reminds me of Napoleon), War of Spanish Succession(mostly about that era, but Seb and Nando are supposed to be paralleling Charles VI and Philip V), Napoleonic Hussars(which is about how , in general, Hussars = F1 drivers), and Rennaissance Muse(this just happens to take place in a different era.)

Explaining my AUs and the historical contexts(proceed with caution, its a lot)

Nandopoleon:

Okay so I'm really really am so deranged about Napoleon = Fernando, but I’ve not posted about it too much because I wanna make a well thought out post about it. But basically I think they’re similar people with similar characteristics and motivations. There was this period of time over the summer where I was only brain rotting about how well any of Napoleon’s quotes fit Fernando(with my fellow nandopoleon confidant @/sweatyflytrap haha.) Here’s some quotes as example: 

“Victory belongs to the most persevering.”

“It is not necessary to bury the truth. It is sufficient merely to delay it until no one cares.”(Piasco era lol)

“Victory is not always winning the battle…but rising every time you fall.”

“From triumph to failure is only one step.”

"A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon."(trophies y'know)

"Always carry champagne! In victory you deserve it, and in defeat you need it!"

Tell me Fernando wouldn't use these as instagram captions! TELL ME!!! But the other thing that was driving me crazy is how well excerpts from the personality/image section of Napoleone's wiki line up with testimonials from Fernando's doc. Examples:

"He cheated at cards, but repaid the losses; he had to win at everything he attempted."(Napoleon) "Whatever activity I take part in, I have this compulsion to find the compeititon in it."(Fernando)

"He could rapidly dictate a series of complex commands to his subordinates, keeping in mind where major units were expected to be at each future point, and like a chess master, 'seeing' the best plays moves ahead"(Napoleon) "When you talk to him, his mental capacity is so strong. He's talking to you, but his brain is thinking ahead"(Fernando)

Like c'mon tell me they aren't at least a bit similar??? There's a lot else I find similar about them but I cannot list my whole manifesto here skdjlsd

Anyways this AU would be Fernando as Napoleon and would be Webbonso -> Strollonso. Basically, Napoleon had two wives: his first wife, who was older than him and who he was super in love with, but had to divorce because they couldn't have kids, but he still loved her deeply. And then his second wife , who was much younger thanhim and from the Austrian royal family, and this was a politically motivated marriage but they still got on pretty well!!(also it's funny, before she married him she didn't want to be with him because the public perception of him made him out to be not the best guy, but then she wrote to her father about how loving and kind he was. very Strollonso, no?)

War of Spanish Succession:

Mostly explained it here and here. I'm not too interested in either Philip V nor Charles VI themselevs as individuals, but rather the roles they fufill in the "story." Though I will say, I got hit with a brick while reading Charles VI's wiki when finding out that he apparently had several male lovers! So I guess my AU having an arranged m/m marriage isn't even that far off the mark hahaha. Why did they have a 13 year war, they should have just arranged a marriage between the two canidates sigh sigh. But yeah, mostly Austria vs. Spain, I think it fits well with the Vettonso rivalry!! They would end up being: Fernando I King of Spain and Sebastian I Holy Roman Emperor hehe. Also I sketched some more:

Napoleonic Hussars:

Explained here as well as with art, and more art here. I'm really still proud of the points I made, I just feel very ardently about it!!! Not about any specific figure, but rather a historical group that I think lines up extremely well with F1 drivers. But this one is fun cause I can kinda insert any driver into it and they'll work pretty well. It's fun to figure out what kingdom what driver would be, either based off their nationality or the nationality of their team. I remember vividly staring at a map from this era trying to figure out where Maranello would be....But like Renault = Kingdom of France and RBR = Kingdom of Austria, and stuff like that

Rennaisance Muse:

Mostly just this post, I've not thought about this one incredibly deeply. Mostly just brainrot about how I think Seb looks like The David with his curly hair

for real thank you so much :D a few people have said this, esp since i've drawn ragatha. and to be honest i am pleased as punch. i've been watching that 1977 movie on repeat it's so beautiful.

if you wanted an actual answer, i don't know if i'm bright enough to be able to explain it, but i think its mainly a mix of medium and the way i draw fabric!

the raggedy ann & andy movie is traditional hand-drawn animation, ann herself being primarily animated by the one and only Tissa David. most of my character art is scanned in from pencil on paper and edited for higher contrast. this might be why, since that gives it a slightly sketchier finish, which raggedy ann definitely has (in comparison to like, recent ghibli movies).

as for fabric, i really like drawing fabric. it's so fun to make ragatha as soft and stitched and pillowy-looking as possible, especially compared to a kind of rubbery, stretchy-toy pomni. in my head, ragatha hugs pretty much replicate the feeling of being cosed up in bed.

earlier today me and a friend were at college on a bear-hunt online for this spread, which he found, and which is so fun and informative:

definitions of grooming: a quick & dirty analytical comparison

tagging this for vampire chronicles only because i don’t think the star wars folks will know what the ever loving fuck is going on unless you happen to be in the niche position of being in both fandoms, but i think a lot of people at least have a sense of the narrative of star wars whether you grew up watching it or you’ve absorbed the major plot beats through cultural osmosis. but i’ve been brooding on this comparison and contrast in how i’ve seen the concept and definition of grooming discussed in both of my current fandoms

i’m gonna start with star wars and tie it into vc in a second, bear with me please! so for me relapsing into star wars as an adult and noticing just how many Dark Adult Themes are built into the foundation into of what george lucas once called “children’s movies” has been a fascinating experience lmao reevaluating my favorite piece of preadolescent media blows my mind because a lot is subtext, but a lot is not, in fact a lot is extremely explicit! for example, i absolutely agree with how this user frames it: [the relationship between Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and Sheev Palpatine is one of the most hideously abusive relationships ever realized in fiction] as well as the addition below it -> [It’s also probably the most substantial depiction of grooming I’ve ever seen in the PG-13 action/sci-fi blockbuster genre]

now as for where vc comes in?

well, i guess i’ve just been cooking in the trenches of vampires chronicles fandom tumblr for three solid years and i can’t remember a time when there wasn’t Discourse™️ about marius de romanus being a groomer, manipulator, and abuser—tbh this whole thing came about because it occurred to me that i feel like a lot of the discourse surrounding marius positions him as being a groomer somewhere in the same realm as a selfish, abusive, reprehensible villain like palpatine!

but there’s multiple definitions of grooming, my friends. it’s wild to me that an all-ages pop culture phenomenon like star wars features a front-and-center portrayal of what actually is a horrific abuser-victim relationship. it gives us a heartbreakingly clear example of grooming used as manipulation and coercion (what palpatine does to anakin/vader from the time he’s nine until he’s twenty-two when palpatine succeeds in breaking him down so systematically that vader essentially becomes his enslaved enforcer up until his death at palpatine’s hands decades later) vs. grooming as a much more neutral term—third definition down on merriam-webster’s (marius stating in his book that he groomed amadeo/armand for vampirism)

you want a guy that was purposely written to be a villain? palpatine is your guy! george lucas explicitly calls anakin/vader palpatine’s victim. palpatine grooms him from the time anakin is a nine year old child, isolates him, radicalizes him, and uses him as a custom-designed weapon to further his own agenda, finally spending the next twenty years torturing him physically, spiritually, and psychologically. star wars not your vibe, you want a vc analog? okay, i raise you santino and the children of darkness (no hate to my santino girlies lmao if you can’t tell, i’m very much a proship blog 🫶🏼)

george lucas famously said about anakin/vader: [“I like the idea that the person you thought was the villain is actually the victim, and that the story is really about the villain trying to regain his humanity.”] and this was actually the route anne ultimately took with armand as a character, insofar as the ‘villain as the victim’ arc goes (not to say they’re mutually exclusive, george right there labels vader as both victim and villain, because he is without doubt a villain; anne said armand was the villain in the first two books but that he became a good person in qotd through his relationship with daniel, etc etc)

[Star Wars is not about morally complex situations where it's hard to tell who the villains are. Star Wars is about how easy it is to become one of the villains] and [#it's about how easy it is to become one of the villains but also that you can ALWAYS choose not to be no matter how far down you are #that part ISN'T easy - in fact it's very difficult - but it's worth doing] — imo this is the biggest strength of star wars, because it makes what is a space opera/greek tragedy palpable to a broad audience! and obviously vc, which was written as a gothic horror series for an adult audience, is more morally grey, of course i get that. and i understand that grooming takes on different forms and there’s a wide variation. i have lived three decades of life somehow. it is two very distinctly different genres and scenarios that i’m trying to compare here… but they do share some similarities, enough that anne rice could take something away from it and use it in her own creation (you think i’m being hyperbolic? she got some of her inspiration for qotd from darth vader LOL i can’t make this up, i wish i was making it up 💀)

and as clear as george lucas was on palpatine being anakin’s abuser and jailer, anne rice was just as clear on marius being armand’s savior and liberator (she called him a hero, actually). your closest star wars analogs to marius de romanus are either qui-gon jinn: the man who freed nine year old anakin from slavery and brought him before the jedi council to be trained as a jedi knight because he saw the potential in him and/or obi-wan kenobi: the man who following qui-gon’s death, subsequently dedicated the next thirteen years of his life to raising anakin and guiding him, forming an attachment to him that was so strong it blinded obi-wan to anakin’s darker qualities—george lucas used the word “seduced”, which is crazy work—and who never stopped loving and honoring and mourning the memory of anakin even after he rejected obi-wan’s teachings and became darth vader, even though in his heart anakin skywalker died when anakin took on the name darth vader and swore his loyalties to palpatine (under extreme physical, emotional, mental duress btw don’t get me started on the obikin x marimand parallels)

in summation:

the jedi grooming anakin to become a jedi knight ✅

palpatine grooming anakin by isolating him radicalizing him and abusing him ❌

marius grooming armand to become a vampire ✅

2) i have read TVA and B&G, i know there is a sexual element to marius and armand’s relationship, however in my opinion this does not constitute either definition of grooming. there is no manipulation and coercion involved and it has nothing to do with marius wanting to turn him into a vampire, it occurs because armand wants it and finds pleasure in it

if it helps, they do tend to get to know one another well, talking about morals/kids/life goals/preferred lifestyle/house/etc. pretty clearly and quickly, then using the in between time to sort of stew on that information

id say the total time is sort of something like 6 months? maybe 3/4 if they're really compatible

(so bc i love interpreting video game logic for real world building, I actually blame this on how fast Zelda/link get together in games despite having sometimes never met before that moment lol)

like not only are family units pretty small, like nuclear family setup, with like 2 parents and 2 kids, or single parent 1 kid type of situation, but the towns or collections of these families arent very big either

hylians kind of use their government the way it was intended lmao?

like the villages and towns matter more for everyday decisions than the kingdom/royalty, like Zelda would esstientally just be the mayor of Castle Town for those constant decisions,

while occasionally is called on to make decisions like for several towns or like is a natural disaster happens

meanwhile humans are, in comparison, in Way Bigger groups, both on an organization scale, and a personal scale

like u have all these specific branches of government, whereas im sure the population difference doesn't help,

and on a personal level, humans can easily have like multiple parents, lots of siblings, and once u combine that with each parent having family too, and those families like to meet up? All together??

yeah, itd look insane to any hylians (who’s smaller extended family may just make up their own village and that's it)

that's a lot of processing, like making the dough from flour and other ingredients, to letting it rise, to making the tomato paste, making cheese, then combining those things with any other toppings, all into one dish??

i like to think that hylians have only just started to touch on actual complicated cooking processes (as in BOTW, where they sell flour and salt, so people besides Link/Wild must know what to do with it)

this has the advantage of impressing any hylian with what a “creative genius” you are lol

id imagine its not too surprising to also see “every fight is a bar fight if its for my life” from individual travelers, so im sure they're not viewed too crazy (esp when ppl know their the hero that constantly has to deal with guerilla warfare from Ganon)

but its be hilarious to watch the reactions of both the Links realizing they’re in a bigger group that should be using “proper” fighting strategies and seeing the general publics reaction to this absolutely feral, armed to the teeth, trained hylians with their equally wild human lol

so needless to say, curiosity can absolutely drive any field to its limits, including the arts, which is why we can have stained glass, or movies/tv shows, hell, the marvel that is Hatsune Miku lmao

(fully for entertainment, a projection of light and sound, what is essentially magical illusions but u did it hte hard way, to the hylians)

on a different entertainment related note, i don't know if the hylians would be super into sports, or not really at all? mostly bc they have to use their fighting/training against real threats, not the sort of “fake” threats that sports are

but on the other hand i could see people like knights wanting to use their abilities for something other than violence and fighting bc their life or their villages lives depended on it

bet the Links would enjoy it for those reasons especially, what with at least sumo wrestling being a sport or activity for them at some point in history, and practically beg u for any new games to play, or to ref their games, bc whewwww

im sure they could get pretty competitive lol

7. obviously, their mostly influenced by the Japanese language

id almost like to imagine a sort of, if not outright Japanese (like with earlier heroes like Sky) then a sort of English-Japanese hybrid further along the line

sort of like how English has German/Greek/Latin roots and therefore u can see what words or structure comes from where, or even how u can understand a fair amount of basic words when other languages share the same roots (english, pants = spanish, pantalones)

would make for some funny miscommunications

or even better, most hylians liking ur unique accent or the Links love to hear u talk bc of it lol

Hey I've sent you a few asks in the past and I really appreciate your takes on the superhero genre, and I'm hoping you can share your input on this.

I'm obsessed with categorizing things, not always in a healthy way, but in my thinking about literary conventions I've come up with a Cartesian grid, where if fantasy and sci fi are on either end of the x axis, then the y axis runs from horror to superheroes. It's far from universal, but it serves my purposes.

For the x axis Dune and The Lord of the Rings can serve as a sort of representative ur-text, in that they aren't progenitors of the genre, but if you spend enough time in SFF you will eventually have to reckon with them, and they are vast and dense enough to warrant serious study.

I'm currently on a horror binge trying to decide if anything fills that same type of niche for the y axis. The Cthulhu Mythos comes close. For all their faults Lovecraft and Derleth cast long shadows.

With superhero fiction it'd be easy to point to something like Watchmen and call it a day. It makes sense if I don't think too much about it, but that feels like such a cop out. I'm also not really well read enough to have any confidence in that pick.

Maybe my framework just doesn't function, but I'm curious if you have any thoughts on it.

You're right that it's a bit of an awkward fit to use Watchmen for what you're talking about because even if it's the wellspring of basically every superhero story told since, it's good specifically on the grounds of how it engaged with the forty years of codified genre tropes that existed up to that point. That makes it a significantly different beast from LOTR and Dune. I'd argue that with the axis you've presented, Horror and Superheroes actually mirror each other pretty well as two genres that have a massive corpus without necessarily having a standout platonic version of the thing. It's telling that instead of a specific Lovecraft story, you picked the mythos- I.E. the whole written corpus of two different authors. I think you can similarly point to the sprawling perpetual publication of silver-age Marvel or 1950s Schwartz-and-Binder Superman as something loosely analogous to the mythos, in your analogy- collectively emblematic but with no one piece being standout.

Now feels like a good time to bring up Avengers #88, a piece of work-for-hire writing done by the esteemed Harlan Ellison.

This issue was has always been remarkable to me because it's very, very clearly a loose adaptation of the plot of Call of Cthulhu. It only dodges plagiarism status by virtue of the first page opening with a cheeky little quote from the story proper. It follows the same loose story beats, except instead of the cops breaking up a cult in Louisiana it's Cap helping the Falcon track down a brainwashed friend of his, and instead of Cthulhu acting as an intermediary for the higher pantheon of dark gods it's an alien named Psyklop, and instead of Norwegian sailors stumbling on R'lyeh It's the Avengers, who kick down the door and kick Psyklop's ass and save the day. A cosmic horror story except Superheroes show up at the last second.

Given their respective publication timelines- superheroes following on the heels of lovecraft by about a decade- and given the perpetual escalation of the threats that they punch out for our viewing pleasure (e.g. "The FF fight God)" for a while now I've conceptualized superheroes as an antibody against cosmic horror. This comic is basically the epitome of that comparison.

with the recent rise of popularity of modern Doctor Who from Mr Ring A Ding/Lux, it’s thankfully given me a good oversight over the franchise BESIDES the Daleks (them being my only view beforehand lmao)

& with that given oversight, it’s had me realizing more & more how much this franchise has similarities to something I hold dear to me personally..especially with the recent cast of “Whoverse” Gods even with my minuscule knowledge on them - SO SORRY if I get anything wrong or off with them btw

a setting with the impression on finding dopamine from a constantly changing face? both for the protagonist AND antagonists??? this just feels like an open area for me at this point

I wanna take this chance to finally give me an excuse to ramble on - hopefully even indulge people of the story involved in:

HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS

& ITS ICONS

Although I know the event itself isn’t all that niche, I never see that many people focus on the building blocks on how these houses & house/event characters came to be.. it’s a yearly fixation of mine to be one of the ones who study in what’s deeper to all these gross-out experiences; 5+ years & counting, I think next year might be 10 years of me doing this holy hell,,,,

Even with all of this “knowledge”, I know that this event has been relevant for years before the 2010’s - being in its mid 30’s currently!!

Because of this, it’s had time to build on itself, find a structure to keep balance whilst adding onto its ongoing plot, or hell, adding new ones into the mix for continuation. With the addition of me knowing how much longer Doctor Who has run for, its developmental schedule is such a good format for people new & old to the franchise can jump into any period of time & still have an understanding story; just like with HHN! There can be people either broadcasting their trip nowadays whilst people looking for traces of lost media (clips, in-house footage, etc) in means of ingesting more content..honestly a fun ride.

Enough with the overhauling background, what’s up with the story?? why do I think of this comparison?? it’s a much longer story than intended…but I still wanna start off in anyway I can.

Not only does this event revolve around houses, scarezones, IP’s, and anything scary, but it has a special addition to make the experience all the more remembering: Icons.

Icons (characters) are the center point of attention of the given year, being promoted like crazy to be seen as something you’re supposed to be afraid of; the whole reasoning as to why there are certain houses or events that you have the misfortune on stepping in on, and the main face of the overall event - not plural, given how many leaders and mascots have had the role prior. There can either be major or minimal in roles, the minimal ones more so being house-specific characters who were expanded on to be given more personality and depth to have it stand out compared to the rest of the line up; sometimes interacting with the major ones!! HHN’s character lineup is ever growing being given this information - and with the addition of “foreign” add-ons from Singapore, Japan, and Hollywood compared to Florida, there’s a huge array of almost personalized tastes being spalled out to be a favorite!

..But with me saying that there is a vast variety of characters, it’s almost TOO much characters to be infodumping about….even with that said, my purpose isn’t to immediately dunk down deep into what HHN has to offer, so I wanna at least talk about characters that I feel compare the MOST to certain Doctor Who elements whilst having importance.

Firstly: Boris Shuster

Boris is the proclaimed protagonist of the event; as much as one as he can be compared to the Icons at least.

He is very similar to the Doctor for his role as “protagonist”, being a private investigator and supernatural detective who dares to go deeper in the strange in means of destroying its origin to put an end to it. Additionally, wanting to give himself a “anonymous” facade.. do you know who else may wish to do that? I got a hint, & it rhymes with numbers 1 through 15

His role is one of the more crucial to the story of HHN overall - being a building block for creative reasoning as to why or how the event began to structure. With his adventurous footprint, he’s had very close dealing with the legions of horror & their totems - the legions are a future highlight, so keep that name in mind.

Having discovered a totem in 1948, he journalized his sighting as means of being able to archive the current paranormal event for him at the time; doing so with each of the legion’s house totem in means of keeping them “in shape”. Wasn’t until 1957 where his mission was finalized, trapping off the wickedness of the legions within the totems in safe keeping, not wanting the energy to be released back into public once more to torment anybody anymore.. it wasn’t until 1991 where a kid by the name of Tim Foyle got ahold of Boris’s now aged writings, almost following it as if it were step-by-step instructions on getting the totems for himself. Tim was just a geek not knowing any better on the grotesque and sinister, so his curious mind ended up reopening the legions from their tyranny.. accidentally killing himself in the process of the released monsters “hosting” Universal’s Fright Night that year!

Now, the Legions of Horror aren’t exactly a single character, but rather sections that group together multiple characters as a way or organization (as well as interactivity from these being used as a flash game when first announced).

Each legion carrying they’re own role, involving The Necromancers/Iniquitous (surrounding death & cemented imagery), The Vampires/Strengoits (surrounding well.. vampires), The Beasts/Cerebins (surrounding predatory creatures who’s only instinct is primal), The Warriors/Baccanoids (surrounding medieval horror), The Prisoners/Maschorians (surrounding revenge-thirsty captists close to death), The Traditionals/Morphans (surrounding the playfully sinister nature of twisted facades), and The Walkers/Kerezans (surrounding the ghoulish undead).

Why bring them up? I wanna bring the focus over to The Morphans, being one where most of the more notable Icons are stored - but also that group overall reminding me of another stored pair of characters under the same influence: The Gods.

Even with my little knowledge on the modern antagonists, I have still seen enough characterization from each to say that The Toymaker, Maestro, and Lux resemble the most of what HHN has for famous characters: Dr. Oddfellow, Jack Schmidt - and his doll-born lackey hypegal, Chance.

Beginning with: Dr. Oddfellow

A strange man, really, for he always yearned for power for as long as he lived.

..Having lived to see both the 2020’s and early 1900’s, it wouldn’t be until 1920 where he’d found a rare artifact skull connected to the Zodiacs that’d granted him immortality whilst his time as an aspiring sorcerer - as well as tampering with souls to do as he pleased; manipulating anything and everything in his path to have it flow his way. Alas, there was a toll for him to keep his powers, needing to “feed” the zodiacs via sacrificial gifts through the deaths of innocents, leading up to his mutations and homicide whilst running a carnival to hide the deeper operation, removing any signs of himself from the crime.

Here’s where things begin to develop: before Oddfellow influenced the idea of gaining power, in the midst of the 1800’s, 2 brothers by the name of Jack & Eddie Schmidt were born in “Shady brook Rest Home and Santiarium” - in other words, an enclosed asylum. Oddfellow was under the influence of Jack escaping his toxic living scenario once he’d gotten older, becoming the main event of the circus as Jack The Clown.. his younger brother Eddie was left behind whilst Jack played a friendly facade while having a grease-covered face tinted fresh with his victims blood, later becoming a chainsaw maniac from his fascination of slasher films & his revenge after a “harmless” prank amongst his cheap horror house leaves him with permanent burn scars over his face.

Over the years, Jack had gotten worse & worse at hiding his own evidence, eventually leading the FBI to the carnival with the assumption of “missing children” being the cause. Oddfellow could only fear for the worst seeing at his own plans were seemingly on the verge of foiling from some insolent maniac, killing Jack on the spot not long after his confession. Unknowingly, Oddfellow’s blood did get infused into Jack’s from him scratching at the Doctors face; hence the scar in his design, foreshadowing Jack and his return for the near future.. for now, he’d been stuffed into a comically large lettered box that’d soon turn his name into a pun the moment he was reincarnated.

Once Jack had the ability to get to work, he got to WORK, i’ll say that. Taking over Oddfellow’s now abandoned carnival since getting his revenge kill, and traveling worldwide through his carnival of carnage for the pure purpose of entertaining through tortuous horror! And with his connection to Universal, it’s made it much easier for him to reunite with his younger brother, and befriend many freaks - no matter the variety. One of his more notable sidekicks would have to be one born from a simple ballerina music box: Chance.

Chance is like Jack’s Harley to his Joker, being his main assistant throughout the years & finding more & more development as time goes on. If it wasn’t notable from her personality, she’s freakish. Almost more loud than Jack is, and he’s already overwhelmingly obnoxious enough! She is very childish & happy-go lucky, almost the perfect balance for Jack & his default sadistic nature. Having been around him since the 2000’s, but it wouldn’t be until 2015 where all of the fun had to come to a halt for poor old Chance; having the death of their hostages luring in the police in means of catching the culprits. Jack abandons the scene at the moment, almost purposefully leaving Chance behind to have it seem as if she was the one who’d cauce all of the blood shed. Needless to say, she did NOT take any of that well, being sent to a mental institution as public isolation and for the crime she’d committed, Chance had surely gone mad given her growing spite..and growing hallucinations hearing her own voice talk to her. Chance had grown fully dependent by 2016, encouraging all of her equally “manic” peers to take over & run down the asylum she was put in, seeing out Jack in any means necessary as he kept himself hidden.

I may just be speculating too hard, but I’ve found a lot of connections between the Gods and the Icons listed beforehand.. even with me not knowing much of the story, I do know that Lux & the Toymaker have had their banters every once in a while; to the point where it traps him i’ve heard?? This makes for a fun comparison, really.

The Toymaker is similar to Dr. Oddfellow in means of powers and motivation, putting on a stand-up facade whilst twisting the boundaries of anything they can think of - all the while laughing like it’s just some sort of game.

Lux is similar to Jack in ways of how they’ve been treated on they’re ends mostly, hiding a deeply sinister persona over a cheerful and entertaining mask in means of getting through to manipulate and find the dopamine they’re looking for faster.

Maestro is similar to Chance from the ways they both express themselves and execute certain tactics, almost being the most preppy and playful when it comes to their tricks.. even with their own restrictions and flaws.

I haven’t even gotten to the REAL meat & potatoes HHN has to offer, I mean hell, there’s entities like Adura who’s the main embodiment of Fear itself - paralleling well with Sutekh and it being the God of Death.

As well as the twin sisters SINIST3R & SURR3AL being hinted descendants to Adura in means of showcasing fear either through physical means, or mental mind games.

& my favorite favorite FAVORITE ICON: The Pumpkin Lord; being the embodiment of Halloween itself & feeding off of fear to become this disgusting mutated pumpkin-like monster.

….but dude this really was just an excuse for me to ramble on about something that I would’ve assumed some people could find interesting.. wait till people hear that Jack kinda counts as a hidden sexyman as well with how often people fawn over him.

Personal Rambling below (because I love this game so much)

WARNING MINI ESSAY INCOMING (lmao)

Oh RainCode... Where do I even begin...

RainCode is a game that has changed my life along with likely many other people’s lives. Although the premise of it is fairly straightforward, the characters and atmosphere make this game so much more. The successor to Danganropa is honestly its own unique story and structure, and tbh I think I love and enjoy it far more than Danganronpa. But this game…is just so much more for me.

I truly never expected this game to be such an impact on my life, let alone become my next fixation.

So, for history, I was honestly in no real hurry to get the game on its release date last year, so I got it a day later. On July 1st, I played the game for the first time. And I didn’t think much of it at first. The only thing that was on my mind when I started this game, was that I was positive I was going to be treating the protagonist like Makoto Naegi and Kyoko Kirigiri’s son the whole time.

This was the first post I made about RainCode back on twitter in 2023.

Yeah... Kinda silly when I look at it now... XD But I do still beleive this headcanon.

When I started the game my 2016 fixation of Danganronpa came back a bit. As a previous DR lover, I did make comparisons here and there to all of the characters. Yuma was very much like Naegi with his shy and timid demeanor at first due to having amnesia, and it felt like déjà vu when playing through the start of the game. But then it happened. The moment that solidified Yuma as my next and now permanent target. When he got sick/dizzy on the train... God that moment still lives rent free in my head. (I know the cause of it was different/related to the first mystery/case, but as someone who enjoys any sort of sick whump moment, regardless of if its little crumbs or a whole-ass meal it still counted for me) I was still shy and hid in the shadows with my silly little niche back then, but I told myself. Yep, once I finish this game, I’m writing a sickfic for this game and he’s the victim. (though what surprised me was that I wasn’t alone on that, 3 other people made sickfics with yuma before I did so that was a pleasant surprise xD)

As the game went on it shocked and impressed me in many different forms. I realized that this game isn’t the Danganronpa clone I thought it would be. Sure, it had a lot of similar elements and mirrored mini games like Hangman’s Gambit, Spot Selection, and of course the Conclusion Comic of the whole case, but the story the world and the mysteries were honestly different from the way DR structured them. And it pleased me when not many people from the main team had died. Most of the deaths were of side characters that had appeared in their respective chapters. Which honestly was a breath of fresh air for me, and I think that’s the real reason it’s separate from DR. It’s not as cruel and not as stressful. It’s a lot more chill, but the mysteries were still enough to get me excited and look forward to the next maze I would enter. The mystery labyrinths were probably my favorites elements of the game. They were just so much fun. And every single character was so likeable, (yes even some of the peacekeepers were fun aside of one or two that I absolutely despise. mostly yomi and guillame lol but I guess I kinda like yomi a bit more bc of the fandom)

And I grew to love Yuma EVEN more. He is honestly one of the best written protagonists I’ve seen in a long time. It’s hard to do timid protagonists right, but RainCode definitely nailed it with Yuma. He had his moments, but it wasn’t enough to be obnoxious. He also shined in more ways than one. And my god, so many relatable moments… (I have anxiety too xD) He was so charming and cute the whole time and even had his badass moments. This little guy is the whole package and I LOVE him for that. Truly a unique and fun main character that blows every DR protagonist out of the water.

(Yes, I said what I said.)

And the ending, GOOD LORD THE ENDING?? It was so well executed, and the ending twist villain was immediately my second favorite character after the protagonist. I could go on about how much I loved the ending but if I did, we’d be here all day and I don’t want to spoil the entire game…so… I’ll leave it at that.

When I finished the game, I was so satisfied. (Yes I love it more than DR, what are you gonna do about it?) It left me super happy and made me want to make some fan content for it. Though I was still very quiet on twitter and had a feeling since twitter is a more complicated platform, I couldn’t gush about the game too much due to fear of spoiling other people…and when one of your favorite characters is just the whole secret of the game’s core mystery, I couldn’t talk about it too much… >.>

So, then I did the unthinkable. I went back to tumblr… It’s a little embarrassing but this account is actually my old one I had from years ago. I was on tumblr more 2013 to 2017 before I abandoned the site when it no longer seemed fun and there were times that I’d rather forget... (let’s just say that I used to RP with my OCs and…one of my RP ex friends catfished me and it made me feel VERY uncomfortable. I wanted to forget it, so I ran away and never returned.) I was super nervous to come back and try to post again, so my first RC related post was about him being a naegiri child.

After that I began making more edits once I gained access to the sprites and full body arts. I made some Pokémon AU edits because those were always fun, and then I started making feverish edits of Yuma’s sprites. My first post ended up becoming a hit and I caught the attention of some people. They liked what I was doing so it gave me a bit of confidence to continue. I got even more attention, and it made my confidence go up even more.

And then I started trying to draw art again, something I gave up long ago. My first few arts were a little rocky at best, but so many people enjoyed it! One of my older arts ended up becoming pretty popular. Through this my few pieces of art, my many sprite edits, and my first fan fiction (Home Is Where The Heart Is) got me pretty well recognized in the Rain code community on here. So much so that I felt confident enough to give myself a title. The CEO of RainCode Whump or “Whumpcode” and all of this confidence made me decide to turn my blog into a fandom and sick whump blog. It became a full blown obsession that possessed my mind that I've become TOO passionate about. Never thought making these little guys suffer would bring me this much joy... XD

Over time, I’ve drawn more art and written more fics than I ever had for a fandom. Before I never ever made fandom art, and I would usually only write one sickfic per fixation. (my last ones being demon slayer and spy x family) But here I am, making more art pieces than I ever have before (hell even doing a MONTH ART CHALLENGE) and improving even! And having 7 fanfictions of RainCode, 6 with Yuma and one with Makoto. And those two became my prime targets and muses for my art. Drawing them is easier for me and they’re my favorites so it brings me such joy to draw them. I love MakoYuma so much. Maybe not so much romantically, but friendship and familial. They have such potential to be so much, and I adore them. Plus putting them in sicknarios and situations is fun (I think we can all agree on that haha)

I think I’m talking too much, so I will say one more thing. I never thought my fixation on this game would last this long. I was positive it would go away after just a few months at best. The game is great but nothing amazing to keep thinking about for too long for me. But I think the main reason I was able to keep my fixation on this game for almost a year (and ongoing) is because of the fandom. (specifically, the Tumblr fandom, but some people on twitter are cool too) I’m honestly so happy I returned to tumblr and was able to make a name for myself in this community. I have met so many talented artists and creators and even made some new friends (and even got a few apprentices to take under my wing) If it weren’t for everyone’s support, I don’t think I would have ever done this much and made it this far.

I’ve essentially made a platform for myself, and I didn’t think tumblr would be a place I’d check daily ever again. To think this silly little game…would change my life so much and make me happier than I’ve ever been in such a long time. I feel recognized and like I belong, I’m finally able to be loud and proud about my passions for sick whump and not worry too much about it, I’ve finally found my prime target and I have fun with him every time, I’ve gotten back into the arts of drawing and writing again and I think I’ve made some of my best work yet, and I’ve met so many wonderful people and even collaborated with them on some fun projects too! (Here's the most popular one and also the first one I did!)  It’s just been…so wonderful… I am so happy to be part of such a chill talented and fantastic community TwT So thank you everyone… this is all thanks to your support… <3

Sorry I’m getting a little mushy here aren’t I… x’D I just couldn’t be more grateful for this game if I tried… So, thank you so much Rain Code, for existing and doing so much for me and making me so happy… I have never had this much fun in a fixation before, and I never felt like I was ever truly part of any fandom and was always just a lurker. It feels so good to finally feel like part of a fandom you love, and also be well liked, admired and accepted by others despite your niche being a little on the odd side… XD

I really hope there will be a sequel for this game, and we’ll see all these wonderful characters again. After all I’ve been through with this title and how much joy and purpose it brought me, consider me a fan for life. I will be dedicated to every future title in this series and play the hell out of it. And I hope it gains a wider audience come October when it is released for more consoles. (Just hoping no weirdos take over and ruin it with stupid drama and horrible things like the DR fandom…)

Though once new fans come in and are also tumblr users…I wonder what they’d even think of me and my place and takes when it comes to this series… XD (hopefully they’ll be nice to me… XD)

Anyway, I’ve said enough.
