I absolutely adore how unwilling aeneas is to be a hero. He’s sick and tired of wars and prophecies and he just wants to tend to the altars of his homeland but all the gods are coming to him in visions saying “GO TO ITALY!!!” and all the prophets are telling him “GO TO ITALY!!!” and when he’s chilling with dido hermes comes down and says “can you stop fucking around and GO TO ITALY!!!” and when he has to leave dido he’s like “dawg I don’t even want to go to italy but everyone really wants me to I don’t have a choice” and then dido is like “well if you love italy so much why don’t you just MARRY IT?!”
Things keep happening to him and it’s very amusing
#zeus looking down and seeing aeneas just vibing ‘🫵 put this guy in a situation’#he’s a blorbo for the gods I love it#he’s like if odysseus wasnt a war criminal#and hes also carrying the weight of his entire race and future generations on his back. along with his father#I’m having such a good time reading this#the aeneid#aeneas#greek mythology#roman mythology#tagamemnon

#It’s so good genuinely like such an interesting exploration of Lavinia as a character without like#Falling into the traps of more modern ‘feminist’ myth retellings#Imo at least#and the inclusion of Virgil as a storytelling device??? This might just be a *me* thing, but I do find it kind of fascinating that almost every Feminist Greek Myth Retelling seems compelled to flatten Helen into a two-dimensional basic-bitch with no guilt or remorse for her actions despite the fact that self-loathing for her own beauty, a feeling of a lack of agency in the face of Aphrodite's whims and a complicated affection for and loyalty to both the Greeks and the Trojans are all major characteristics of hers in both The Odyssey and The Iliad. I'm sure this has nothing to do with the dynamics of modern feminism and patriarchy whatsoever.
#like. guys. if there's any character who's just BEGGING for a retelling from their POV other than Briseis and Lavinia#(which have already been done)#it is Helen#she is the literal quintessence of 'woman relegated to object in a competition between men'#and yet she still somehow has a more nuanced character in stories written by ANCIENT GREEK MEN (gestures generally at Athens)#then she does today#what are you people doing#classics#greek mythology#should i tag the books im referring to? yes. i will actually.#the song of achilles#a thousand ships#silence of the girls#the women of troy#(just realised that Lavinia technically isn't a creation by Greek men but snsyshdjeuds#Grecco-Roman mythology / Aeneid follows Iliad / you get my point)#anyway come at me i'm ready to be burned at the stake#oh shit i also forgot#the penelopiad

Aeneas and Creusa bc i got an ask to do hecuba and her daughters (which you bet i'm doing), but i only had designs for Cassandra and Polyxena, so i've been doing some skethcing and Creusa has emerged in my vision as a total cutie
#i also like to think that she's just super in love with aeneas#and maybe that's why priam has mega beef with him cuz he thinks aphrodite is involved but actually aeneas just got mad rizz#tagamemnon#aeneas#creusa#the aeneid#greek mythology#sketch#character design#trojan family#kinda? does aeneas count?#my art

that’s just rome i think (met 4 trans. mccarter)
#mcamorphoses#mccarter’s notes say this draws on aeneid 6 and. yeah. where the underworld is ALSO the geography of augustan rome#my two fave of all time variants on ‘there seems to be elected government and criminal courts in the underworld’ are of course#‘the ghosts of dead populares are doing agrarian reform and redistributing the elysian fields’ in lucan#and a ghost politician called ‘cranion son of skeletion from the deme necysia’ in lucian’s dialogues of the dead#i.e. skull son of skeleton from the corpse deme#really really good#metamorphoses#beeps

"Ruthlessness is mercy upon oruselfs."
But is classic Odysseus singing to Neoptolemus to explain to him why he should steal from an old man who was suffering with chronic pain after being bitten by the horrific chronic pain snake (Ody mentions but not on detail how he abandoned said old man alone in an isle to die).
#my favorite headcannon about ody#is that he not only would never have teached the lessons he gave neo to telemachus#but he would be pissed if someone had done ot#HIS kid gets to grow up away from the war and have good morals#also love the idea that even if he ressents Ody a lot Neo also learns a lot with Odysseus#and that's fully how he goes from the sweet kid he was in Philoctetes his own greek myth to the murderous guy romans painted him as#of course romans didn't rly liked the troyan heros and specially ulisses and made them worse ppl#because the aeneid and them being decendants of troy#as their mythical headcannon#Neoptolemus#tagamemnon#odysseus

no one talk to me about how the word virgil uses to describe aeneas killing turnus means "to bury [his sword]" but also means "to found [a city]". christ
#like... killing turnus is what's required for rome to be founded... ohh im emo#i AM a proud turnus fanboy the likes of which virgil was not prepared for when he wrote the aeneid#also aeneas speech to turnus about pallas is literally heartbreaking you can feel his grief through the text#i dont think any english translation ive ever read or done has done it justice compared to the original latin#the verb is condo btw which also happens to be the verb of all time#the aeneid

Okay friends I’m gonna need your opinions. If I do decide to buy the aeneid (extremely likely) I wanna know which translations you guys recommend. This might be superfluous considering it’s all subjective but I wanna know anyways!!!
#currently looking to pre-order the scott mcgill and susannah wright translation#mainly because the cover would fit the aesthetic of the iliad and odyssey books I currently have#I want it to be cute and matchy#but also it releases august 12#but I’m a patient man I can wait#anyways#appreciate the help!#virgil#the aeneid#aeneas#tagamemnon#classics#classicism

The funniest thing about the Aeneid is not only that the Romans felt the need to rename Odysseus into Ulysses, but also that in Latin the U and V are the same letter and the name is spelled with an x instead of double s. So Odysseys is now named Vlixes
#I laugh at it every time I see his name in Latin#how am I supposed to take this man seriously when his name is Vlixes#also why did they only rename Odysseus#nobody else got a different name#the aeneid#odysseus#publius vergilius maro#queueusque tandem abutere catilina patientia nostra

Okay so we're reading some epic poetry in class and what I've gathered so far is this
-Odysseus is amazing
-Achilles needs to choke down a chill pill yesterday
-Aeneid is kinda stupid and I don't like it
-Hector has no flaws and is therefore not a proper hero (??)
-Odysseus is too nice
#the odyssey#anyways I think I'm starting to like it#a lot#really really much#but don't tell my teacher pls#odysseus#achilles#what's his best friends name I can't remember#reminded me of patrick#patroclus#THAT'S IT#THANK YOU INTERNET#my ela teacher thinks they're gay#i don't like the aeneid very much tbh#ALSO ODYSSEUS AND ULYSSES ARE THE SAME PERSON WHY HAS NOBODY TOLD ME THIS BEFORE
