I absolutely adore how unwilling aeneas is to be a hero. He’s sick and tired of wars and prophecies and he just wants to tend to the altars of his homeland but all the gods are coming to him in visions saying “GO TO ITALY!!!” and all the prophets are telling him “GO TO ITALY!!!” and when he’s chilling with dido hermes comes down and says “can you stop fucking around and GO TO ITALY!!!” and when he has to leave dido he’s like “dawg I don’t even want to go to italy but everyone really wants me to I don’t have a choice” and then dido is like “well if you love italy so much why don’t you just MARRY IT?!”
Things keep happening to him and it’s very amusing

This might just be a *me* thing, but I do find it kind of fascinating that almost every Feminist Greek Myth Retelling seems compelled to flatten Helen into a two-dimensional basic-bitch with no guilt or remorse for her actions despite the fact that self-loathing for her own beauty, a feeling of a lack of agency in the face of Aphrodite's whims and a complicated affection for and loyalty to both the Greeks and the Trojans are all major characteristics of hers in both The Odyssey and The Iliad. I'm sure this has nothing to do with the dynamics of modern feminism and patriarchy whatsoever.

"Ruthlessness is mercy upon oruselfs."
But is classic Odysseus singing to Neoptolemus to explain to him why he should steal from an old man who was suffering with chronic pain after being bitten by the horrific chronic pain snake (Ody mentions but not on detail how he abandoned said old man alone in an isle to die).

no one talk to me about how the word virgil uses to describe aeneas killing turnus means "to bury [his sword]" but also means "to found [a city]". christ

Okay friends I’m gonna need your opinions. If I do decide to buy the aeneid (extremely likely) I wanna know which translations you guys recommend. This might be superfluous considering it’s all subjective but I wanna know anyways!!!

The funniest thing about the Aeneid is not only that the Romans felt the need to rename Odysseus into Ulysses, but also that in Latin the U and V are the same letter and the name is spelled with an x instead of double s. So Odysseys is now named Vlixes

Okay so we're reading some epic poetry in class and what I've gathered so far is this
-Odysseus is amazing
-Achilles needs to choke down a chill pill yesterday
-Aeneid is kinda stupid and I don't like it
-Hector has no flaws and is therefore not a proper hero (??)
-Odysseus is too nice
