On the other hand it's really damn frequent where i'm watching action, especially anything with fantasy, where I think "wow i wish i could watch this same show animated and better"

I'm sorry but magic always looks better when it's animated. Action looks better because it can be even more dynamic. You can get more intense. You can throw people through mountains. You can blow up cities during fights.

There's some really cool martial arts movies out of east asia and south east asia. But there's things you can do in animation that you can't in live action AND when you do it in animation it's SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than if you try to make it live action.

According to one thing i found (and I've found no solid numbers with any solid evidence which oof but oh well) supposedly AtlA cost about $1 Million per episode. with 51 episodes in total that's $51 Million dollars.

Netflix AtlA cost $15 Million per episode, coming to $120 Million for ONE season. For the cost of one hour of this show you could make 15 most of one season of the original show.

i want to take the time to talk about a series of disabilities that no one takes seriously or even recognizes as a disability, which is food intolerances, and allergies. if a person can get sick if they eat the wrong foods, they are disabled, as this illness will make them unable to function all because they ate the wrong food. it's not okay to guilt someone for seeking foods that won't injure them.

in 2022, i began to lose my ability to digest land meats (pork, chicken, cow, etc.), animal milks, and eggs. it started slowly but quickly progressed to every type of land meat. i am only able to digest seafood, plants, nuts, seeds safely without becoming horribly sick. i tried to buy cow's milk because it is cheaper recently and became so ill it was genuinely traumatic. i have never been that sick in my life before. i cannot safely ingest cow's milk, the cheaper option, because it will injure me for several days or even weeks at a time. this happens to me with all land meats as well.

i cannot eat eggs. i cannot fried rice that has egg, i cannot eat most sauces like mayo or ranch dressing because of their high egg content. i cannot eat anything dressed in mayo as a sauce. anything that is baked or brushed or washed with egg is a risk. my digestive system really hates eggs in particular and they are inescapable.

people who can't digest or process lactose, gluten, meats, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, beans, fiber, certain fats, proteins or sugars don't have their needs considered very often, nor taken seriously, especially when that person is poor. people with digestive issues need to be able to eat foods that don't hurt us- it's not our faults that alternative milks, breads, pizzas, snacks, sauces, dips, spreads, meats and more are significantly more expensive. we still need to be able to eat foods that don't harm us regardless of how much money we make.

Sorry I haven’t posted much lately. I’m working on a new project. Here’s a sneak peek of what I’m doing!

The idea I had was that in the original NES manual there are these gorgeous anime cel illustrations highlighting some of the action you’ll get into playing the game.

However, these are not actually part of any long lost anime or anything. They were single images produced to look like an anime by hand painting cels and placing them over backgrounds.

So my thought was… why don’t I actually animate these scenes and try to make them look like true hand painted 80’s anime?

To help with this project I’ve identified a number of factors that go into what makes 80’s anime look the way it does. Take a look at the example:

SHADING: Unlike a lot of American productions where the shadow layer is a separate animation pass overlayed on top of the original through a composting effect, Anime is done much cheaper. Artists would actually ink the colors of where shadows are supposed to be on the cels themselves, and then paint the shadows onto the cels using a different color.

BRUSH WORK: 80’s anime has a rougher edge to it. Either through using the xerox method or by hand painting the ink lines with a dry brush, the one point that is clear is that the actual linework of each stroke is often broken up and brittle.

CEL LAYERS: Anime cels are actual sheets of celluloid painted and layed down on top of a background painting. No matter how flat you try to make it, the more layers you introduce the more likely cel shadows will start to pile up, and the foggier the background gets.

MY PROCESS: So this is what I’ve come up with as my method of reproducing this digitally.

1) I’m going to use a dry brush that cracks and will intentionally try to make the animation a little messy. I won’t be trying to clean it up much (if at all) and if I make a mistake it stays in. Anime was often produced very fast and very cheaply so I am trying to replicate that effect.

2) I’m going to use multiple shades of colors to represent the flats, shadows, and the painted lines depicting where shadows will go.

3) I will include a shadow layer underneath the animation to give it a traditional 2D effect of having multiple cels piled up on top of each other.

4) When all is said and done I will run the whole thing through a VHS filter to really sell the idea this is a long lost animation from a bygone era.

I hope you like the results, I think all this attention to detail has really paid off and makes it look like an old 80’s anime of Link tossing a boomerang. I hope to make more of these and stitch them all together to make a commercial for the NES Zelda.

I totally agree that it’s sad his design got softened, but I will say I always saw it as significant of his “domestication” for lack of a better word.

Like, the op said it best that there was something “so Creature” about him in the first movie. Because he was wild, feral, untamed. And then he got closer to hiccup, got used to living indoors and having so much provided for him where before it was survival of the fittest (not that he doesn’t ever hunt or live outside anymore, but you get my point).

He sort of became less of an animal, which is like the whole point of the trilogy ending: dragons aren’t meant to be pets. They need to be separate to thrive.

httyd 1’s design for toothless was the best one IMO . there is just something so Creature about it that is missing from the second movie onward

this was b4 they changed his face to be blockier, have bigger brows. they made him more traditionally cute, and exaggerated his expressions. it’s not a bad thing, but something that isn’t as appealing to me personally. to me He started looking less n less Animal and more Human , n i feel like something was lost there
