Keiji is a character that I'm pretty sure every one of us can recognize is an absolute weirdo (ok maybe some are too hard on copium for the "weirdo" part) and sketchy as hell, but thinking about everything he's done it really feels like he's so much shady and ruthless than we give him credit for. So here's me bulletpointing some the moments that I haven't seen too many talk about, a little theory throwing his status into question and addressing the massive elephant in the room that almost everyone refuses to acknowledge. If there's something else you feel I missed or wanted to evaluate on, do leave it in the comments.

[Also, disclaimer: I will be discussing Keiji and Sara in a romantic light near the end of this post, so if that makes you uncomfortable please proceed with caution or skip entirely. This should go without saying but for my own sake I will say it anyway-- No, I do not condone their relationship in real life. No, this is not meant to be "shippy" or endorsement of any kind. This will simply be pointing out their dynamic as another example to prove the whole point of this rant. But if someone else does ship them that's totally fine. Fiction doesn't equal reality and if you harass a real person over fictional characters you will not see the light of heaven. Be civil, please and thank you. *Being a murderer.

I feel like I should start with the most obvious and undeniable. I don't think this is debatable to anyone here. Mr. Policeman may have been an accident and kinda confirmed by Midori to have been set up, but he still shot and killed an unarmed man in a moment of panic and recklessness. Even putting that aside, there's no denying that he killed Megumi in cold blood to get out of his debt to her and covered it up to the group to preserve his credibility. Regardless of what you think of Megumi, he has no excuse here. Not only is he one more kill away from being a serial killer, he's the only participant in our group that has actually killed people directly aside from Alice. Another reason why I bring this up is cuz something that completely flew over my head is this:

At the start of the game he had the audacity to complain about not having a partner or someone he knows with him like Sara does as if he didn't literally let Megumi get ripped apart by chains probably not even an hour ago Keiji what the hell--

*Throwing Kanna under the bus repeatedly.

Despite positioning himself as a protector and someone to rely on, he's far from above putting their youngest members in danger. Next to voting for the fourteen year old girl to die, he had the great idea of letting said fourteen year old be the one to babysit their biggest liability. Up to the point where they would stay in the same room both day and night. While I absolutely 100% trust that Sou would never EVER do anything to her, Keiji had no guarantee of that when he send her off. Hell, he literally just got done accusing Sou of setting Joe up to die (which I don't believe almost solely based on the fact that he said it, more on that another time maybe). He knew Sou was bad news, and openly acknowledges how adults can be terrifying, but he did it anyway. The dubiety of throwing the already traumatised little girl to keep watch on what they thought to be the most dangerous adult that had manipulated her once before is not lost on me, and that he didn't take any responsibility for her afterwards isn't lost on me either. To be fair, the Sou and Kanna thing doesn't just fall on him, it falls on everybody (Alice gets a pass because he actually swapped out with Kanna to watch Sou for her), but he was the one with the final say on the matter and who encouraged her to take the role despite Reko's rightful protests. The fact that he also voted for her to die in the Main Game, and is the only adult to do so, doesn’t help his case.

*Attempting to frame Sou knowing Reko was actually responsible.

While you could argue he was trying to cover for her since he knew why she did what she did, trying to pin this act on Sou to cast more doubt on his is extremely shitty. Never mind the blatant corruption and the irony of a supposed man of the law abusing his power to knowingly frame an innocent person (in this situation at least), and him sowing more seeds of confusion and resentment within an already rattled group, and giving Sou legitimate reason to be suspicious of him (and by extension Sara)-- this makes it so difficult to trust him after realising he's done this. Literally every time he accuses someone of being or doing something suspicious (mostly Sou), I always have to think in the back of my head if he’s telling the truth or just telling a blatant lie. He's shown that he's willing to not only lie to cover for himself, but to lie to delegitimize someone else. And Sara never caught onto it (Sou and maybe even Nao likely did tho). She never openly acknowledged it-- No one did. The complete lack of mention of what he did here makes this action quite missable. Hell, I didn't even catch it the first time. Has he done this before? Who else has he lied about? Who else would he lie about? Who else would he knowingly pit against the group? You don't have to wait for that answer, because I will provide an example later. And with "later", I mean now.

*Casting suspicion on Gin before the vote while hiding the fact that he killed Megumi.

While it's not as blatant as with Kanna, there are two instances where Keiji shows a readiness to either put or leave Gin in harm's way. The biggest one for me is in the Main Game. Like, how dare you. That is a furry child, sir. This kid’s like TWELVE. Even though he makes a valid point about calling out suspicious actions to clear them up so we can all trust each other, casting doubt on Gin of all people right there feels pretty screwed to me. This was before the preliminary vote. His words could’ve very well gotten Gin voted for if he couldn’t disclose why he did what he did for whatever reason and therefore being unable to clear himself from suspicion. It’s even more fucked when you realise that Keiji has literally murdered his partner and is currently planning to get Sou killed while giving this whole spiel about doubting others so that we can believe them and pointing the finger at a little kid to make an example to the group. But when Nao, Sou and Sara call him out on his suspicious actions that could rightfully damage his credibility, he tries to shut them down completely. My brother in Christ, you brought it on FIRST (don’t get me wrong I’m very much aware he didn’t really mean the whole “trusting each other” bit but come on dude)--

Speaking about not meaning what he says:

*Letting the group think he’s Ok to vote for knowing he’s the Keymaster.

This kinda got to me because I thought this was Keiji actually being… vulnerable? Accepting the consequences of his actions and allowing them to vote for him in their distrust without protest even tho it could cost him his life, maybe. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I can’t remember a lot of times-- or any times, really-- where Keiji has willing put himself into the line of fire, at this point at least. He always finds a way to keep himself safe, give himself insurance, and I thought that this would be the one time he doesn’t do that. But this feels so ominous looking back knowing that he was the Keymaster the whole time. That our distrust and betrayal and his resignation to it all didn’t matter because he was going to be safe no matter what. That he knowingly allowed us to assume that he was a safe vote because he didn’t want his plan to kill Sou to be ruined, which narrowed down choice of people we can safely vote for even further. That this action is ultimately the reason why Sou and Kanna were our only options to kill off in the end. If he had admitted it there, we could’ve found someone else to vote for so our final options could consist of three people, not two. But he didn’t, and the rest is history. There’s a lot of things he’s done I can’t get over. This one ranks pretty high. The second Main Game is already a huge sore spot for me for obvious reasons; knowing that a lot of the things that happened were due to his inaction where it truly mattered and activity in all the wrong places doesn’t make me fee any better. He didn't say he was a safe vote-- he didn't lie-- but his words carefully omit that voting for him means a total party death, something he should've stated then (and before this, really).

*Leaving Sara with the sacrifice card.

Despite making a big show about “always being by her side” and being her “reliable policeman”, he chose to look away when she was in real danger. He attached himself to her as her right hand man, made her shoulder the responsibility of being the leader, constantly manipulated and flattered her to win her trust and gain her favour-- but when she needed him the most, he basically left her for dead because it was the most beneficial to him. Keep in mind that not only did he know about her getting the sacrifice (he was also the sage so he'd have seen the trade happen), but he had the tokens to help her get rid of it. But those tokens weren’t for her life. They were for his. He used them instead to give himself the Keymaster as insurance for the Main Game (the Keymaster he stole from Sou/Kanna most likely to buy Sara’s trust btw). His desperation for survival outweighed his sense of obligation to keep her safe, and that’s the most subtle yet transparent he’s been about his selfishness. What makes this so much worse is that Keiji is our support character. He’s an ally, and our closest one at that, to the point where Sara burned her hands in a futile attempt to rescue him and signed her life away to save his. And yet his loyalty and protectiveness pale in comparison to other characters. Compare his actions to Sou’s: one of their many parallels and similarities is that both their girls get hit with the sacrifice card. As we’ve established, Keiji was fully aware of Sara being send the sacrifice by Sou, had 50 tokens ready to go and chose to secure his own survival than save her life. Kanna ended up doing it instead, attempting to trade the card off Sara with Sou realising what happened immediately. And what does Sou do? Completely bend over backwards trying to keep her alive. He lied about being the Sacrifice so the others wouldn’t suspect Kanna of having that role, meaning he could try gathering vote for her without anyone seeing his true intentions. He tried to stop her about coming out with the truth of what she had done so she doesn’t sentence herself to death. After everything he did to survive-- after how much he lied, how much he schemed, how much he hurt, and how he had thrown himself away to replace everything that made him Shin with the man that had traumatised him years before the game began to scrape together even the tiniest chance to survive-- he threw it all to the wind and was willing to let it all be in vain if it meant she got to make it out of the Main Game alive. The worst part is that Sou had never intended to make it through that Main Game. He confessed to already knowing that Kanna would choose Sara over him if she truly had the Sacrifice card. Yet he still did what he did all in the hopes that she could win. Because it was all about her survival first, not about them surviving together.

It also gives a different context to Sou's panic and him stumbling over his words trying to come up with any argument to get them to stop. At first I thought that Sou was afraid for his life. Which would make sense-- Keiji and Q-taro set him up to die and seemed pretty adamant on having everyone voting for him to get it all over with. But he was already prepared to die the minute he realised Kanna traded with Sara. So it means it wasn’t his life he was fearing for here-- it was hers. To him, if they voted for him there, it wouldn’t have just been his end but hers too. But we know that Kanna isn’t the one who has the sacrifice. It’s Nao, and considering how the Main Game can end either or both of them dead, I wonder if he regrets not having given up there, not letting Keiji get away with that shitty stunt he pulled knowing it would’ve at least guaranteed her safety than leave her fate in hands of a girl with enough reason to kill her. Ignoring the sounds of my heart shattering into pieces for the 100th time thinking about the Greenblings, it’s so fascinating that our biggest rival and most distrusted member has a greater sense of loyalty and responsibility for his ally than Keiji has for his own. Sou can be a liar and manipulative and selfish, but for how unpredictable he is something I can always trust is his love for those he holds dear (Kanna) and general desire to protect our most vulnerable (Gin). Sou loves Kanna, and so he’s fine with protecting her even if it comes at a price he never wanted to pay. Keiji surely cares about Sara, but unfortunately that is something I can’t say about him-- at least at that time (also the fact that Sou ended up taking more care and responsibility for Kanna despite Keiji having been the one to throw her on him in the first is so ironic).

*Continuously pushing Sara to take on the role of leader.

I think one of Keiji's biggest failures in the game come from his treatment of Sara despite positioning himself as her most reliable ally and her partner. From the very get-go, he was very adamant of making Sara be the one to shoulder the responsibility of the group. He, along with Joe (he didn't do anything wrong here), pushed Sara to be the Challenger during the Russian Roulette, despite Q-taro and Kai being readily available. He made Sara be the one to interrogate the suspicious convict while distancing himself from the situation. And he encourages her to lead them through the Main Game, lets her make the choices that steer them all forward and as a consequence take the fall for them as well. Rather than take on the role himself, or let another adult take it, he places his full trust in her and makes her shoulder everyone's weight so he doesn't have to. And he can see the effect it has on her: having horrific hallucinations due to the immense guilt she feels. But having Sara as their leader gives him a greater shot at survival and helps his credibility, so even though he tries to provide her comfort he still continues to keep her in that role. Again, the high schooler taking responsibility for the adults falls on a lot of the older people here, but Keiji was the one who kickstarted it rather than just go along with it like everyone else had. Gin, Nao, Kanna, Reko and even fucking Sou to an extent all have moments where they take the burden off her and relieve her of that pain she shoulders all the time (or at least try to). I need Keiji to take more responsibility for both the group and for her.

*Pitting Sara and Joe against each other.

This is just another example of the previous point. This isn't as bad, and I could give him the benefit of the doubt that this might have not been intentional, but it's something I want to bring up regardless. I'll be the first to say that Keiji wasn't wrong here. Prying into everyone's votes is a very bad move, especially since no one knew that Mishima would actually die (it was introduced as a practice round, after all). I agree with him, Joe was being rash, but instead of leaving the conversation there, he decided to throw Sara into it to pick a side. Which is... not good. He already won the argument and already had Reko on his side. Bringing in Sara could not only make Joe feel worse and potentially strain their relationship (especially if she rightfully chooses Keiji's side like he was expecting and hoping for), but just puts Sara in the spotlight during something she doesn't want to be part of. While there's a chance he might've done this because he know Joe is more likely to listen to her than him, he should've known better than that. It again makes her take the responsibility of giving the final verdict that would've otherwise gone to him.

*Asking Sara to take responsibility for his life

I've got nothing other that the grown adult swearing his life to the grieving, unstable teenager to take responsibility for while asking her if she'd die along with him is weird as heck. Keiji's said weirder things prior to this, but this one is a different weird. I think Beanieman's post mostly echoes my thoughts on this on, so I'll link it here for this point. This part kinda bothers me:

He shouldn't be encouraging her taking on anymore responsibility than she already is. He knows that the deaths that happened under her leadership haunt her. He knows that she's very much unstable enough already, to the point where he takes baby-steps to avoid triggering her trauma over Joe. He positioned himself as her reliable partner, her rock to lean on (quite literally sometimes). We see first hand how emotionally dependent she is on him. If he died, it would destroy her-- she'd destroy herself over it. He knows this (or should) but he still does it. His disappointment and dismissiveness when she understandably rejects him makes it worse. The guilt of potentially not living up to his expectations is not what she needs.

*Potentially working for Asunaro

This is more ambiguous than everything else here and more a theory than anything but it's been on my mind for a long time that Ranmaru might actually be onto something here. We know that Asunaro has a strong hold on the police. Midori was able to infiltrate the force, and they were able to get rid of Mr. Policeman for looking into the corruption going on, first having Megumi fire him and secondly getting Keiji to kill him by planting false info about the suspect having a gun. Megumi was also able to get Keiji off the hook for murder, which I believe Asunaro had a hand in too (I theorize this might've been her wish). There's also Alice, who was arrested and sent to prison despite the fact that he (legally) didn't kill anyone since Midori was a doll. The police are connected to Asunaro-- by extension Megumi and extending further potentially Keiji.

Something I've seen someone rightfully point out is that neither of the options you're given to say in response to the accusation... actually deny it? Both choices dance around answering directly, which is suspect as fuck. If Keiji truly wasn't with Asunaro, why not shut that theory down immediately? There's no benefit to answering anything but "no" when he's innocent, and he's lied straight to people's faces for less. So why not just debunk it? I think it's cuz there might be some truth to what Ranmaru was saying here. The biggest reason I think this is because despite the fact that Keiji quit the force, he and Megumi were still associating with each other years later. They were kidnapped together and partnered up for their first trial. One missable piece of dialogue is Keiji admitting that he was with his partner-- or rather a "coworker"-- before getting knocked out.

That slip of the tongue and backtracking makes me believe this part to be true. Him switching from "my partner" to "a coworker", which is a lot more distant and impersonal, makes me think it's got to be Megumi. However, I don't believe that Keiji would wanna keep in touch with her after what happened willingly, so I can only imagine that it's due to that debt he has to her. My little game theory here is that after the shooting, the debt he owed her was a forced recruitment into Asunaro. It's the only thing I can imagine he meant by "the worst kind of debt", a debt he'd literally let her die for to get out of. And if this is true, then it could also explain away his instant attachment to Sara, since he'd know beforehand that she's someone he can depend on due to her having the highest chance at survival. Maybe he already knew about her beforehand, one way or the other. We know Hayasaka did (which I think we as a fandom moved on from way too fast btw). Kai and Sou did too. There's always a chance. And unlike Sou's victory rate and Midori's favourite number, it's not zero. One person made a comic about this idea I recommend checking it out, it's tastefully unsettling. But still very much unsetling and uncomfortale. Be warned that it's also Keisara-centred, so if that makes you even more uncomfortable they did the job right you can ignore it. Proceed with caution or don't read if you don't like.

*Being a predator

I have been waiting so long for this one XD For context: a while ago I made a longpost discussing the sanitisation of soushin and this kind of toxic attitudes in fandoms regarding "problematic content" (ships, characters, shows, you name it). In it, I mentioned that it's not only soushin that receives this treatment but a certain other dynamic too. It's not a rainy day, however this has been way overdue and if I don't get this done now I never will.

Something I've seen a lot, and I mean a LOT-LOT is this notion that Keiji acts "like a father" to Sara and that their relationship is a completely platonic father-daughter bond and that he's the resident dad of the group? Like, it's cute, but that's not at all what their relationship is. At all. Not even a little bit. We called Sou and Kanna siblings before the Greenblings reveal. The difference is that not only does half the fandom think this man is gay, but he's only ever been protective and caring and loving without any romantic intentions towards Kanna ever. His title as her brother was deserved, based on the genuine affection and platonic protectiveness similar to that of Alice's. Keiji has made advances tho, on many occasions, and his flirting is repeatedly acknowledged by other characters. Namely Sou and Reko.

(Sou grills him for being a creep every chance he gets I love him XD) But yeah, these are not the type of reactions and comments you receive when being a "father-figure" to the teenager. You get all this when you hit on the teenager. Which he does all the time by calling her "cute" every time she asks something and his "cute little detective", swearing himself to her by saying that "he's always on her side" or something like that, asking her if she'd die alongside him, repeatedly claiming or insinuating that they're on a date, or ""having a moment"" and going to ""take the next step"" when in private (*cough* groomer *cough*)-- you name it, he likely said it. He's a walking-talking ladykiller machine and teenage girls aren't safe, apparently.

(Quick note: The dialogue for the Russian Roulette one is a tad different now. In the new translation he says "cause you're so darn cute" now. I dunno if that makes it sound any less weird, but I felt like putting that out there. What I'm also putting out there is that according to the trivia he calls her cute 8 times throughout the game so. Yeah. *Cough* groomer *COUGH COUGH*)

Like, who tf says this?? Especially that last part 💀 Even if you wanna die on the hill that these are supposed to be "jokes" not to be taken seriously, we should all be able to agree that the (ex)police officer in his late 20s jokingly hitting on the high schooler he follows around is still weirdo behaviour at best and down right despicable at worst. The fandom seeing lowkey predatory/inappropriate behaviour from a figure of authority persistent for almost three entire chapters and dismissing it as "fatherly" and "platonic" is, well, concerning. It's very concerning. If your dad acts like Keiji, you should probably call the police. Unfortunately for Sara, Keiji is the police. And considering this guy got away with manslaughter, I don't think said police would do anything anywho. But yeah-- he uses flattery and flirting to distract her from prodding to much at him while simultaneously aiming to gain favour in her eyes. He showers her with reassurance of his loyalty and affirmation of his deeper attachment towards her and her alone every chance he gets to cement his position as her closest and most trustworthy ally. He insinuates a romantic partnership between them to others to mostly keep her to himself or the two of them alone (he always does that when they're investigating or going to investigate by themselves). There's such an obvious romantic undertone to their relationship and his actions that it going almost completely ignored in the fandom feels weird to me.

I want to make clear that there's nothing wrong with headcanoning Keiji as a father figure to Sara. It's cute. Keiji didn't have a dad himself, and the closest thing to a father figure he had was the man he shot dead. He's a damaged and hardened guy. But Sara's dad is involved with Asunaro and Gin's is an alcoholic, and in a situation where they both need guidence and protection he tries his best to grow and change, fumbling to become that decent father none of them got to have. It's nice, and a wholesome dynamic for our "characters with memorandum counterparts and only non-determined deaths" trio. But that's obviously not what their dynamic is. There's a difference between headcanoning something and erasing canon and the Yttd fandom leans heavily into the latter. Keiji's a creep, he always has been, yet 90% of people I see always portray him as a Mr. Dad Guy or completely sanitise him to hell when him being creepy and unnerving to be around is what made him such a fascinating character. Just like I said with Soushin, the sanitisation to make canon more digestible is one thing: harassing or insulting the people that explore canon is another. I'm gonna take a bullet, derail this rant and say it-- Keisara shippers get so much shit for literally being right it's so infuriating. Keiji does hit on Sara, a lot. He's creepy and weird like that. Him flirting with her isn't a "mistranslation" or a joke or anything like that; his dubious wording and antics are very much intentional. Yet the only people I see actually addressing and acknowledging that without adding fluff is keisara shippers and other ""proshippers"" only for them to get fucking sniped for it I cannot 💀💀 I have yet to meet a single eastern fan who calls this cop "fatherly". This really feels like such a western issue cuz the majority of the japanese fandom agrees that this man's a predator (correct me if i'm wrong but keisara is the most popular ship in the japanese side of the fandom, right?). Then again, eastern fandoms are more chill over there when it comes to separating fiction and reality in general anywho.

*Yeah, I think I'm done with the Keiji slander. Yay. Time to unceremoniously end this.

There's more to say about that, but this is a Keiji post, not another shipping discourse post (although it's hard discussing Keiji's predatory behaviour without bringing it up too). Before I do spiral from the original point, I'm going to try and reach some sort of conclusion here. While I did spent the majority of this post just reading Keiji to filth, and am very salty towards him in particular, this was not just to rake him through mud for my own sanity (tho it's part of it XD). Keiji's character is that he started off as someone who wanted to do the right thing, someone who wanted to be good and moral and protect others by joining the force only to kill all the progress he made along with the person who inspired him to become an officer in the first place. It heavily contrasts the Keiji we have now, a sleazy, unreliable and corrupt ex detective who flirts with underage girls and is willing to resort to the most bankrupt of decisions to save himself. A man that has long lost hope of his wounds healing that he lets them fester and his rot spread onto others. And while I headcanon Keiji to just inherently be a piece of shit, his former self tried his best to be genuinely good before he became so convinced he can never be better that he made peace with his shittiness in the end.

With all this I wanted to highlight some the shadier and bankrupt things he's done that I haven't seen much discussion around and refresh myself on them before the final part. Both so no matter how emotionally dependent and therefore rose-tinted Sara is about the man I don't forget what he's actually like and what he's done while also being able to appreciate how much he's changed for the better. Some of my favourite examples about how he's changed are these:

Before the second Main Game Keiji was willing to let Sara and Kanna die because it was the most beneficial option for him, but in Chapter 3 he takes the on the role of "it" from Kanna and refuses to tag Sara when he thought he was gonna die after failing to beat Midori.

Actually showing more sympathy towards Sou after the Main Game. He was very mean about dismantling his pretence of a cold front to Kanna's death, don't get me wrong, but he showed a lot more consideration and understanding for Sou's feelings and acknowledgement about his active role in it than he ever had beforehand.

He was genuinely fighting for everyone to survive the game, not just himself. While Keiji would prefer everyone making it out safely, he has a tendency to guarantee his own survival first through any means necessary. His plan to corner Midori in the banquet could've cost him his life if it weren't for Q-taro's final stunt, yet he still reassured Sara to save Gin even tho it could've resulted in his execution from Meister potentially finding him guilty of violating the rules.

Him hugging Mai and trying to be more cheerful was cute as heck. I'm sorry but him showing more vulnerability around his allies and being less closed off in a way he hasn't been before is something I'm very head empty about. That he was hugging and interacting with Mai without making any unwanted advances or ladykiller jokes and generally just having a more friendly vibe was nice. It makes his creeping on Sara more unfortunate, but I'll take what I can for now. The bar is in hell.

And that's it, I think. Overall, I hope they do address some of his actions here in the final part or make them have an impact on his and Sara's relationship. Especially that Asunaro part. The person who wished for Sara to join the death game is still unknown and so is Keiji's consent form wish (same goes for the Dummies, Hinako and Megumi), so I'm curious if they're related or not. If he's going to go down an even darker path or redeem himself as much as he can we'll see when the final part drops. He has the potential to go both ways. This is going to be kinda awkward if the next part reveals him to have been a decent guy all along, so hopefully that doesn't happen. Please be morally bankrupt, man. This post didn't end up the way I wanted it to, nor bring up as many points as I would've liked, but I know I won't finish it if I went full perfectionist on it (I already spent months on this writer's block do be a bitch) and it's looking kinda long already. Hopefully it's still decent enough as is right now. I'd like to say that this is my apology for the last longpost I made, but I brought up one of the most controversial and hated ships and traits of Keiji's character and defended them, so maybe I shouldn't 🙃 Anywho, hope you enjoyed and cheerio.

SEOUL, May 22 (UPI) -- An economic theory has sparked controversy during South Korea's presidential campaign, with the opposition leader introducing a classic economic metaphor called the "hotel economy."

The restaurant owner spends it at a stationery shop, and the shop owner uses it to repay her debt owed to the hotel. Finally, the traveler cancels the reservation, receives a refund of the original $100 and leaves town.

Although no money actually remained in the town, multiple transactions occurred, debts were cleared and local commerce was activated, according to Lee Jae-myung of the main opposition Democratic Party.

A Gallup Korea poll conducted Monday and Tuesday showed that Lee led with 46%, ahead of Kim Moon-soo of the ruling People Power Party, who had 34%.

Lee, a frontrunner in the campaign, is seeking to succeed impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was removed from office following his brief martial law declaration late last year. The election is slated for June 3.

"No new money was added, but the money circulated. That's what an economy is," Lee said during his campaign speech last week in Gunsan, around 135 miles south of Seoul.

Lee used a similar analogy during the 2022 presidential election, where he narrowly lost to Yoon. The theory is widely seen as a rationale to support his signature policies of expanding fiscal spending, despite concerns about the growing national debt.

In particular, he is a strong advocate for local currencies, or regional government-issued vouchers that can be used only within a specific city, town or province to encourage local spending.

The ruling camp criticizes Lee's claims, as Rep. Choi Eun-seok, a former businessman, wrote in a social media post.

"The $100 deposit a hotel receives is not considered revenue until the guest actually stays at the hotel. Until then, it is regarded as a liability -- money that still belongs to someone else. Anyone with even a basic understanding of financial statements would never make such an argument," Choi said.

"It's nothing more than a deceptive scheme masked in sweet talk, geared toward misleading the public and pushing through massive local voucher programs that have no real economic impact, all funded by government finances and national debt," he added.

People Power Party's chief spokesman Shin Dong-wook concurred.

"What Lee proposes is a logic that simply defies reality. He is trying to create a narrative to justify his populist spending programs designed to win votes," Shin said in a phone interview.

"Such reckless spending will result in higher sovereign debt, which our future generations will have to bear," he said.

In response, Lee countered that his critics lacked basic economic knowledge.

"When the economy is not good, money needs to circulate within local communities for things to improve," he stated during a campaign speech Tuesday in Paju, north of Seoul.

"If money circulates at the neighborhood fried chicken shop and sales go up, the owner might have a drink and buy more chickens, as well as extra seasoning. Then, the local economy will get better, even if just a little. This is called the 'multiplier effect,' but there are fools who don't understand it," he said.

Many economists appear to remain skeptical about the validity of the hotel economy theory.

Lee Phil-sang, an adviser at Aju Research Institute of Corporate Management and former Seoul National University economics professor, told UPI that the theory was based on a flawed assumption that the country's marginal propensity to consume, or MPC, is one.

"South Korea's MPC falls short of 0.3, which means that if someone receives an extra $100, she spends less than $30 of it. Hence, the hotel economy does not hold up and will end up raising government debts," he said. "In addition, there is the crowding-out effect. Increased government spending can reduce private sector activity."

Economics professor Lee Yoon-soo, from Sogang University in Seoul, agreed.

"If the Korean economy is struggling due to a lack of liquidity, then injecting more funds may be a good solution. But in my view, the real problem lies in declining productivity. That's why some economists question the validity of the example," he said.

By contrast, Ha Joon-kyung, an economics professor at Hanyang University, noted that the $100 story example could be a tool to clarify economic concepts.

"The hotel economy theory simply illustrates a situation in which the local economy can be revitalized by keeping money in circulation without additional monetary expansion," Ha wrote on his social-networking account. "It is just an example intended to help explain economic principles more easily."

Las Vegas, NV - A Nevada state court jury heard opening statements Monday in a lawsuit seeking $20 million from insurer USAA for supposedly acting in bad faith by refusing to pay a client’s claims after a rear-end collision and then litigating against him.

Plaintiff Timothy Kuhn claims he suffered a serious brain injury after being rear-ended by a pickup truck in 2018.

Despite USAA initially agreeing the accident was 100 percent the fault of the other driver, Kuhn alleges the company then breached its obligations to him by intervening in his lawsuit against the pickup driver and then arguing their own client was at fault for the accident.

USAA maintains Kuhn’s head injuries are not nearly as serious as claimed, and that they fulfilled their obligations to him by eventually making a $250,000 policy limit payment days before the trial began, and that Kuhn had the option of pursuing additional coverage from a separate insurer.

Plaintiff attorney Kimball Jones of Bighorn Law, representing Kuhn, told jurors how a Ford F-150 pickup slammed into the back of his BMW sedan at 45 miles-per-hour while he was in stationary traffic on the highway.

Jones described how Kuhn promptly filed a claim with USAA, and that they acknowledged the other driver was 100 percent at-fault for the collision.

While Kuhn’s neck and back injuries improved over time, Jones detailed how he had persistent problems with memory loss, headaches, loss of smell and difficulty with focus and executive function.

Kuhn characterized these symptoms as the classic hallmarks of a traumatic brain injury from a concussion, and he described how Kuhn accumulated tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills seeing neurologists in multiple states and pursuing various forms of rehabilitation.

In June of 2020 Kuhn’s attorneys submitted a claim to the pickup truck driver's insurer, and they made a prompt $50,000 policy limit payment.

The following September, upon being informed Kuhn intended to sue the driver, Jones told jurors USAA decided to intervene and litigate against Kuhn.

Throughout this process, Kuhn said USAA would only make a $10k payout offer, an amount he described as a “lowball��� made in obvious bad faith given the insurer’s eventual decision to pay the $250,000 policy limit.

Kuhn argued USAA’s obligations to act in good faith towards an insured extended into the litigation process, and he sharply criticized the company for arguing in court filings that Kuhn’s own “comparative negligence” caused the crash after already acknowledging in writing the other driver was 100 percent at-fault.

“USAA knew whose fault it was while they were blaming Tim,” Jones said.

He urged jurors to reject the argument USAA’s payout on the eve of trial absolves it of any liability, arguing that years of litigation over what should supposedly be straightforward coverage while Kuhn's bills mounted resulted from the “delay, deny, defend” strategy - a popular shorthand for tactics used by large insurers to delay and avoid paying valid claims.

Jones concluded his opening by asking for an award of $20 million, including punitive damages that he argued were justified due to USAA’s supposed “reckless” disregard for their own policies.

Representing USAA, defense attorney Robert McLay of DKM Law Group began his statement with high praise for Jones, telling jurors his opening statement was the best he’d ever seen in his lengthy career.

However McClay argued Kuhn’s head injury was never as serious as claimed, and that a $20 million award is completely unreasonable given that USAA did make a policy limit payout before trial.

“It’s about the money,” McClay said.

He told jurors that Kuhn’s actions immediately after the collision, like using his cell phone in the ambulance, were not consistent with someone who suffered a serious brain injury.

He also cited evidence of Kuhn’s supposedly significant recovery and suggested he leads an independent life that contradicts the narrative presented in Jones' opening.

“It does not add up,” McClay emphasized to jurors.

He insisted a delay in payment does not automatically mean an insurer acts in bad faith, and that it’s completely reasonable to have a “good faith dispute” over the underlying facts of a claim and investigate them. He suggested the $250,000 payout was part of an overall litigation strategy and not an endorsement of Kuhn’s underlying claims.

McClay also argued that nothing USAA did precluded coverage from his excess insurer, Hudson, which is not participating in the trial.

The trial is taking place before Judge Gloria Sturman, and CVN’s live and on-demand coverage will continue for the duration of the trial.

Summary: Confused about his feelings for his best mate, Seamus agrees to go on a thrilling Muggle adventure despite some hesitation. Will he take the plunge?

The First Move

Rushing water splashes against a cluster of rocks, drowning out the pounding in Seamus’s ears.

No. No. No.

All of the air exits his lungs as he steps closer to the ledge. Car after car zips by on the roadway behind him, and he reckons those Muggle passengers have the right idea. The purpose of this bridge is to provide passage over the water, not into it.

Instead, he spent the morning filling out a liability waiver, emptying his pockets of any loose galleons, and stepping into a safety harness that tugs in all the wrong places.

All because of Dean Thomas.

Dean, his brave and open-minded best mate, can convince Seamus to partake in the most mental activities without question. His eagerness to say ‘yes’ has nothing to do with Dean’s striking brown eyes, the tall, slender column of his neck, or the fact that his skin always seems so soft to touch—

No, absolutely bloody not.

Sure, they’ve completed class projects at the same double desk, attended the Quidditch World Cup, and even fought side by side during the Battle of Hogwarts. Dean has been with him through almost everything, and there’s no scenario in which Seamus would bungee jump with anyone else.

“Cheers, mate!” Dean appears beside him, and Seamus yelps as the platform shakes from the increased weight. “I'm not going to push us over the edge!"

The bridge is long, narrow, and creaks along with the slightest movement, not as sturdy as Seamus had hoped given how it’s the only structure holding him 100 meters above the water. Its only redeeming quality is being anchored to the ground—at least, Seamus hopes it is. He knows it's illogical, but how is this platform staying upright without magic? Surely, all this metal isn’t enough to suspend everything over the shallow river without the help of a sticking charm?

This is potentially the worst plan he’s ever agreed to, and there’s already a long list.

Although known for his reckless streak—and an affinity for pyrotechnics—he makes a choice that fills him with nothing but regret.

He looks down.

Seamus’s legs wobble and he grips the railing behind him even tighter until his knuckles turn white. A million thoughts race through his overactive mind as he struggles to swallow down a large gulp of saliva pooling in his mouth.

It’s decided. He won’t ever jump off this platform even if a wizard holds a wand to his head.

“Don't worry,” Dean shouts near his ear. “It’s practically safe!”

“Practically safe?” Seamus’s palms begin to sweat, and he hooks an elbow around the railing to stop himself from slipping. “How can it be practically safe? It either is or it’s not.”

And people do this for sport?

A crewman interrupts his protests by yanking on Seamus’s harness without warning to make a few small adjustments.

"You mean it wasn't a proper fit before?" Seamus squeaks. He spits out wisps of the man’s shaggy black hair that fall by Seamus’s mouth while he works, making his thoughts drift to Harry Potter—wait, it’s not him, is it? Potter would certainly push him off the edge just to be a prat.

But as the crewman gives him a short nod before moving on to Dean, Seamus’s gaze travels to the thin, charcoal-colored cord attached to his feet.

His life depends on a strap with the consistency of a rubber band.

Seamus’s stomach sinks as his eyes make contact with the choppy waves rolling through the water below. It’s the clearest aqua he’s ever seen, showcasing the pebbled rocks resting beneath the transparent liquid surface. Blimey, is there even enough water to dive into if their escapade goes south? Although Seamus has gone through various mishaps over the years, he doesn’t fancy bungee jumping being another one.

He imagines the small stretch of river hissing at him with the venomous strength of Nagini. A shiver slithers its way through his body as a blast of cold air hits his already burning face.

“Alright, Seamus?”

"I need a minute." Seamus climbs over the railing, heaving out a large sigh as his feet plant on the solid sidewalk. He closes his eyes and tries to remind himself to inhale and exhale through his nose.

A hand drops onto his shoulder and Dean’s deep voice tickles his ear. “Where’s your Gryffindor bravery?”

“I left it at the castle,” Seamus mumbles under his breath, still refusing to open his eyes. “All I can think about is us ricocheting off that water like a couple of bewitched bludgers.”

"You are rather clumsy," Dean teases.

Seamus’s head snaps to the side, and he fixes Dean with the same intimidating stare he practices in the mirror, right down to the scrunched eyebrows and pursed lips. "You cheeky git!"

Raucous laughter fills the air, and the sound eases a small amount of the tension in Seamus’s shoulders. He likes Dean’s laugh, even when he’s using the pleasant conversation to quell Seamus’s nerves.

“Just pretend you’re soaring on your broom…er, downwards.”

Seamus scoffs. That’s easy for Dean to say, speaking to the skills he developed as Chaser for the Gryffindor team—not that Seamus is bitter at all.

“Why couldn’t you have taken me to one of those Muggle football games you love so much?”

Dean tuts. “I go to those all the time. This is loads better.”

Seamus bites his lip, glancing behind him at the crewman observing the pair with raised eyebrows and crossed arms. The man checks the watch on his wrist. “We do have another couple coming after you two.”

“Oh, no, we’re not a—” Seamus fumbles over his words while the heat creeps up the back of his neck. He avoids Dean’s gaze as he attempts to convince himself to get back on the platform.

The bridge is massive. Seamus’s mouth goes dry as he retraces his movement to the ledge, not once letting go of the steel railing remaining as his only sense of stability. He’d rather not splatter against the ground like a Blast-Ended Skrewt.

The worker bends down and wraps a thicker cord around both sets of ankles lined next to each other on the platform. “Remember, you will be jumping in tandem. We’ve measured the amount of cord that will be let out during your jump based on your combined weight we calculated earlier today.”

Seamus’s head pivots in Dean’s direction. “You didn’t tell me that!”

“This was explained to us during the training, Shay. Were you even listening?” Dean asks with an exaggerated eye roll.

“Turn towards each other,” the crewman instructs.

The speed of Seamus’s heart picks up, his mind already shifting to the thought of being wrapped around his mate, pressed chest to chest, hands trailing over every ridge of Dean’s taut muscles—

But what if the cord snaps? The pit in his stomach grows larger as he considers Dean’s life being at risk, too. Here’s to hoping the cord works its magic to protect them from harm.

"Keep your wand handy." Dean pats the inside zipper pocket of his jacket, breaking Seamus out of his daydream. "I’ll levitate us back up if needed.”

“We can’t do that!" Seamus hisses, darting his eyes around to make sure the crewman isn’t listening. "We’re in the presence of—”

“Muggles. I know," Dean replies under his breath. "It was a joke.”

Seamus wipes a bead of sweat from his forehead, blinking up at the beaming ray of sun above their heads. Why is it so blasted hot outside today?

“I can’t wait to draw us making the freefall.” A wide grin splits onto Dean’s face. "The look on your face alone…”

“Oh, bugger off.”

“You know I’m good with a quill.”

Seamus almost falls over, a warmth spreading through his core. “Is that an innuendo?”

“If you want it to be.” Dean finishes his quip with a wink, sending a bout of Flobberworms through Seamus's belly.

Well, what the bloody hell does that mean?

He doesn’t have much time to dissect those puzzling words any further. It's clear Seamus has two choices: he could not jump and potentially miss out on a great adventure with the bravest bloke he knows, or he could go for it and take the leap. Dean says he's wanting to tick this experience off his bucket list, but this adventure definitely wasn't on Seamus's. Is Dean’s desire enough to fuel his own?

It's too late now, Seamus figures while standing up straighter. He's committed to this mission. Although he doesn't trust himself to make the jump, he believes in Dean.

There’s no other choice to make.

“Are you ready?” Dean asks, nodding his head towards the crewman standing with his hands on his hips. “I reckon he’ll kick us out if we don’t go soon.”

The notion makes Seamus chuckle, considering the internal battle he just went through in his head. "Do I really have a choice?"

"You do have a choice." Dean reaches out and gives his hand a tight, comforting squeeze. "You always have a choice."

"Not when it comes to you."

Dean’s bronze eyes grow cloudy, and he tilts his head, never once letting his heated gaze stray. He hitches in a strangled breath as Seamus shifts against him, allowing their fingertips to brush together at their sides. Sparks shoot up Seamus’s arm as if someone’s cast Verdimillious.

It’s official. Seamus is ready to throw himself off this bridge, and he’ll do it with Dean head-on.

The crewman lifts up a closed fist, giving the pair a signal to go.

"Forget the fear,” Dean’s hot breath whispers near his ear. “Just jump."

Seamus recites the instructions drilled into his mind. Bend your knees. Stretch your arms out.

Without taking another second to think about his decision, Seamus allows gravity to take command and dives headfirst, plummeting off the landmark with Dean into a freefall. His mind goes blank, unable to focus on anything beyond the wind rushing through his ears. A turbulent commotion stirs through his belly, and Seamus clenches his eyes shut to brace himself for the inevitable impact.

His entire body springs up into the air through a series of bounces when the cord reaches its maximum stretch. The tug back isn’t nearly as painful as Seamus had anticipated. Did they complete the jump in under five seconds?

Dean lets out a loud “whoop!” that echoes through the open air. "It's just like flying!"

"Yeah, to our death!" Seamus yells, still intent on keeping his eyes closed as they swing back and forth like a pendulum.

"We didn’t cock this up, yeah?" Dean chuckles.

Seamus allows his eyelids to flutter open, regaining control of his surroundings. Crisp salt air fills his nostrils, bringing awareness to his head dangling mere centimeters above the water level. The entire world rotates on its axis as they continue to spin, and too much blood is rushing to his head to think properly.

"I think I was screaming all the way down! It’s a bit blurry, I’ll say."

"I know." Dean’s voice is close, so close, and Seamus can taste the coffee on his breath from the caffeine break they had shortly before they made the jump.

A rush of adrenaline seeps through Seamus’s veins, and propels him to commit to an act he’s never had the courage to do before. He really should have bought a box of Toothflossing Stringmints on his last trip to Hogsmeade.

Ah, well.

Garnering every ounce of willpower, Seamus cranes his neck forward and crushes his mouth against Dean’s. To his pleasure, Dean responds in an instant, his large, calloused hands threading through Seamus’s hair and massaging his scalp. He can taste the sweat on Dean’s upper lip as he pulls it between his teeth, eliciting a loud moan from both of them.

A sensation washes over him, one Seamus can only describe as massive euphoria. Every single cell in his brain is firing, making him giggle like a lunatic as he pulls back a few centimeters. He just kissed Dean…Dean! Correction, he just snogged Dean. Upside down.

Judging by the toothy grin on Dean’s face, he quite enjoyed the moment too. Seamus doesn’t ever want to let go, even if someone utters Relashio.

All too soon a bright yellow rubber raft drifts towards them through the water, and a man instructs the pair to grab the pole lifted in their direction so the crew can untie their legs. Once back on the solid Earth, Seamus’s hand finds Dean’s straight away.

“That was a nasty shock!” Seamus seizes his last bit of mad energy, bouncing up and down on his toes. Although his legs are so numb he can barely stand straight on his feet, it’s like he’s conquered a Hungarian Horntail. It’s comical how the thought of leaping to an unknown fate was far more terrifying than actually taking the plunge.

"It was brilliant!" Dean gasps all in one breath. "You are brilliant.” He reaches out his free hand and ruffles Seamus’s untidy sandy-colored hair.

He never thought he’d be a land diver, nor did he believe he’d end the moment snogging Dean, but here he is, proving his courage.

Now he can remind Dean for the rest of their lives that he made the first move.

Seamus squints his eyes up towards the grand, arching bridge while puffing out his chest with newfound confidence.

"Can we try it from the top of the Astronomy Tower next?"

Anyway, ahh @enchantedpendant, I’m so sorry I’ve kept you waiting so long for this! I know you expressed excitement over me writing something angsty way back when I first began the celebration event and ugh I’m just sorry it’s taken so long. And thank you for your support as well. You’ve been so amazing and encouraging right from the start and I’m so grateful :) I really hope you like this... if ‘like’ is the correct word.

Oh - also, to the anon that also requested this exact prompt (great minds think alike, huh?) I’m planning on writing a different version for you! But yours is the penultimate or last one so I’m hoping this’ll tide you over in the meantime! 

This is my first piece after being unable to write for a while - forgive me if it’s rusty. I worked hard on this but I also struggled to all hell with it. It’s a circular-ish/montage-y piece. And I could have made it short, focusing on the scene itself, but I wanted this to have an emotional impact, ya know? I hope it worked! Please let me know what you think. 15. “Don’t die on me - please.”

Why did it always feel too soon, each time he let you go?

You remember it, the first time it happened. 

How could you not? Little, insignificant, as it might have been to some - to him, if he could convince himself - to you, it was momentous. Lasting only a second, where his calloused fingers had brushed against yours, softer than his, yes, but no less enduring. The normally aloof eye, the only one he seemed to show without hesitation, was intent, the obsidian endless in its depth. 

But - out of courtesy to him, or some kind of self-preservation - you’d paid it no mind. Or kept up that pretence, anyway. You found your footing as quickly as you’d lost it, stumbling away from his support no matter how reluctant you were to do so. The gratitude you’d muttered was enough and it seemed like you’d made the right choice; when that quietly shrewd eye of his turned away from you and his strong hands let you go in the same movement. He never let you bask in your own clumsiness, but that somehow made you feel worse. His nonchalance was excruciating. As if he hadn’t just saved you and made it look effortless. As if his touch alone hadn’t frozen you in place. 

As if it never happened at all. 

(It never should have happened at all.)

But still, you remember it. The moon’s luminosity the perfect backdrop, illuminating that wild silver hair as he turned away from you. 

(It was all so disgustingly poetic.)

It took longer than it should have for you to turn away in kind. But you did. Eventually. You made the awkward trek back to camp before him, the internal rambling of your self-berating your only company. It grew louder each time you looked back, stealing little glances against your own will.

It was so loud that you didn’t notice much else.

Not even Kakashi stealing glances back at you, for instance.

Why did your breath hitch,  even when the air had never been more tranquil?

You remember. 

How he always did that, you still don’t know. Perfect timing, though you never appreciated just how perfect until he was gone again. 

(You should have learnt to count your blessings.)

Without a trace, and so quickly, unceremoniously, that the entire encounter might well have been a mirage. It still might have been.

(Maybe it’d been better that way.)

 You’d had enough. You didn’t think it through much further, and your desperation triumphed over your cautiousness as you sought out the bar exit. The mission, against all odds, was a success. And, against all better judgement, you were dragged along to the accompanying celebration. The atmosphere should have been infectious, you should have smiled more, you should have enjoyed yourself. 

Then again, you couldn’t find much to celebrate. Mistakes - your mistakes - had piled up. Your team completed the mission despite you, not because of you. The liability, not the heroine. 

(In hindsight, would it really have been so terrible if things ended for you there?)

You’d exhaled dramatically as you made your escape, a feeble attempt to expel all the guilt and shame you’d retained, or tried to retain, up until now. 

You still remember the lilt of his voice, smooth and somehow jovial, but never losing that gravelly undertone, as you walked around the corner. How could you ever forget it? No matter how lax he sounded, or tried to sound, the severity lurking underneath always cut you deep.

Are you alright, he’d asked, already knowing the answer. With that signature one-eyed smile, he pretended to believe your response. And you pretended, in turn, that his smile didn’t have had the effect on you it did. 

You didn’t exchange that many words as he walked you home, but somehow, it was enough. Though he was always careful with what he revealed, it was enough. He understood - much more than he let on, you suspected - but it was enough.

You didn’t hate yourself quite as much anymore, and - well, it wasn’t too much of a stretch - it didn’t seem like he hated you either. Something in the way his hand squeezed your shoulder, lingering for a moment, just before he saw you off. Was he reluctant to let go? 

Maybe. 

You slept better that night. 

You’d find out later, that, miraculously, Kakashi did too.

Why did you feel so secure, sharing in all that suffering?

You remember.

(Why had you been so stupid?)

You’d almost dropped your flowers, when you saw him standing there, facing the memorial stone. It shouldn’t have been shocking; you’d heard gossip, in passing, about how much time he spent here. You’d also heard, in passing, how late he tended to be. Putting two and two together, you never held the latter against him. 

You understood, after all. You'd understood all the more as your eyes bore into his back. Something in the way he curled and uncurled his fists, the way he sighed, the way his straightened back gradually hunched. 

As far back as you could recall, your attitude to graveyards was… ambivalent. You’d avoid them whenever you could, not out of any tendency to be spooked or anything like that. You just couldn’t bring yourself to leave. It was peaceful, to be immersed somewhere so solemn, with such dense air - but the gravity of it also chained your feet there like an anchor. You knew each time you were there, regardless of your own volition, wouldn’t be the last. So if anyone were to empathise with this particular way he chose to punish himself, it was you.

(And now you would take it on twofold in his stead. What a joke.) 

“You don’t often come here,” he’d said quietly, matter-of-factly. Devoid of judgement, though he didn’t bother to face you. 

“No. I probably don’t spend as much time here as I should…,” your voice trailed off, and found new confidence, when you watched him stare at that stone. Hopelessly. You didn’t know all the details. But you didn’t need to. All you knew that it was simultaneously frustrating and pitiful. “And you probably spend too much.”

This time, he glanced back over his shoulder. You couldn’t exactly see through his mask, but he seemed… amused? “How do you figure that?”

“Call it a hunch.”

He chuckled, satisfied, and stepped back to give you room. “Then, I guess we balance each other out.”

“What a pair we are.” 

“Right. Well, I better-“

You still don’t know why you decided to grab his wrist that day, when he turned to leave. You still don’t know why you couldn’t bring yourself to let go, either. 

You still don’t know why Kakashi decided to stay.

Why did you flit so rapidly from anger to elation, and why was it always because of him?

You remember.

In hindsight, it had been your fault. 

(What the fuck else was new?)

Retreat. Get out of here. It had been a simple order. But it had felt impossible, when the enemy appeared from behind, jutsu blaring, its raw power visible, that disgusting snarl on its wielders’ face - aiming for him.

You didn't think. You couldn’t think. You leapt in front of the attack within seconds, and your plan ended there. 

The same couldn’t be said for your captain. With his signature finesse, with a rare scowl - you couldn't tell who it was aimed at - you were moved away, and the enemy deflected, in the same movement. 

The battle had come to an end shortly after, through no fault of your own. It took all you had, but you bit your tongue as he scolded you, in front of your comrades, quietly healing your wound. 

You had acted for his sake. 

(How futile.)

Apparently, that meant nothing to him, not even worthy of acknowledgement. It wasn’t like you had expected gratitude - but for a man known for his stoicism to blow up, and because of you - it made you livid in turn. 

The journey back had been silent, seemingly just so you could bask in your own shame. 

So, when you were back in the sanctuary of your home, nursing your injury, your failure, and your pride - you hadn’t expected to hear a knock.

Nor had you expected him. Headband missing, brow furrowed and glaring at you in that way you couldn’t understand, much less accept. You’d made a mistake - of disobeying orders, of recklessness, of caring - but why the hell did he care in turn? 

“What?” You had hissed, unable to contain the outrage of his interruption of your little haven. Not that it made it any easier to look at him. “You’re here to admonish me again?”

“What the hell was that?” He growled in turn. “You disobeyed my orders and almost got yourself killed.”

“I-,” your voice shook, tears pricked your eyes - he was right, even if it pained you to admit it, but it wasn’t fair. The space between you had shrunk. He was so close now that you saw the rise and fall of his broad chest beneath his vest - apparently just as outraged as you. You had never seen him like this before. “Why are you so mad at me? I was just trying to - I thought-”

“Am I supposed to factor in every one of your impulses? Why did you do that?”

You remember how you heard his heartbeat, pounding - pounding just as loud as yours was. And it depleted your inhibitions. “Because - because you were in danger, you asshole!”

You remember how he had gently grabbed your injured wrist, just as you were about to shove him. You’d anticipated his reflexes, but you couldn’t have anticipated his expression, when you finally met his gaze. You remember how swiftly he’d pulled down his mask, but you couldn’t have anticipated just how breathtaking he’d be, either. Nor how it could feel when he kissed you - finally.

When Kakashi moved to pull away, of course, of course, you moved to pull him right back.

Why did you always let him leave?

You remember.

(If you knew how it would end, you never would have let him. Better still, maybe you never should have let him enter in the first place.)

Safe.

You’d never felt so safe. 

When he’d appear and reappear at your apartment - the window, never the door, despite your half-hearted protests - waving with that stupid, adorable, one-eyed smile. He knew you’d saunter over, sliding it open with a matching grin, every time without fail. 

(You always did. That much, you did.)

When he’d laugh, when you told him about your mishaps. You’d laugh at his in kind - though it didn’t suit you, and you replaced it with your usual sympathetic ear. When you’d accompany him to the memorial stone, and pull him way just at the right time. When he’d pull you away, too. 

(What a fool.)

When he’d unmask himself around you, and you pretended not to notice, like it didn’t floor you. When you watched him struggle to decide whether he was relieved or offended. When he kissed you, in that indescribable way that wavered between tentative and determined, soft and powerful, usually choosing the perfect time to flit to the latter, making your knees buckle in the process.

(What a fool.)

When he’d undress you, and no matter how desperate he’d seem, how he always paused to take you in. When he’d move in you, filling your heart and body so much that you thought you might burst. When he’d hold you just that little bit closer, tighter, longer every time.

(What a fool.)

Even when he’d leave, sometimes after you’d fallen asleep, sometimes before - sometimes in the morning - when he’d leave for a day, a week, a month - you felt safe.

Because you knew, in the deep recesses of your heart, that each time you saw him wouldn’t be the last.

(What a fucking fool.)

You remember the first time he said it. Quietly, earnestly, unceremoniously. 

“I love you,” Kakashi had murmured into your ear one night, when he was so, so sure you were sleeping.

Why did you ever dare think you had any cause for optimism?

You remember.

The two lines, glaring upwards and through you, from that unremarkable little piece of plastic. They’d ran parallel - you thought it apt, just like your trepidation and your excitement. The lines would never meet, though. 

(How apt.) 

You’d been happy. That was what had shocked you most, save only for the very fact of you being in this situation in the first place. But behind the fear, there it was. A little glow, a nucleus of hope and future nascent deep in your centre, spread through your heart and speckled to your fingertips, your face, your smile - that paired flawlessly with the little bundle of meaning, the combination of you and him budding in your belly. 

(Buds drop off before blooming all the time.)

You thought it’d be easy. 

(How stupid.)

You thought you could share it all with him right away. 

(You wished.)

But there was a part of you that faltered, when he’d show up at your window in that deceptively lax way. The words stuck in your throat, whenever he asked you if you were alright. The ease of his question didn’t match the weight of the truth. It almost felt… cruel. 

Maybe his fears would eclipse yours, and all that euphoria you’d harboured would dissolve. Maybe he’d be angry, though you suspected that even if he were, it’d be short lived. Maybe you’d end up keeping him from his duty. 

(Maybe you were just a coward.)

Regardless, your hands would float to your stomach whenever they weren’t occupied. Regardless, your mind would conjure up a future, remiss of your own will, an idyllic scene of a child, a marriage, something so sickly sentimental that you wanted to scold yourself. Regardless, it gave you hope.

It was enough, you’d decided. You'd get over it, face him and your fears, because what was waiting on the other side was so good that you’d forget that you had any in the first place. You’d do it. 

You’d tell Kakashi the next time you saw him.

His blood gleams under its splendour, under the green light that emanates fruitlessly from your delicate, shaking fingers. Softer than his, but no less enduring. 

It’s all so disgustingly poetic.

He refuses to scream, or shout - just whisper your name, in that restrained, ever-abiding tone. It’s never made you want to scream out more in his turn. You would have done anything to absorb it all in its stead. 

“What are you doing here?” he demands, as if he has the energy to. As if you can answer. As if you don’t see the wounds, the bloodshot-eyes, that compliance of his own mortality. His hand - the one that you were stupid enough to trust in, to think was strong - clenches around yours, calloused, then weakens, loosening its grip. He follows it with another impossible, familiar order. “Get out of here.”

“Shut up. Don’t die on me - please,” you beg, coughing up your words in between the sobs that spill forth, onto his face. The ache, the deep, sharp cramp in your hips, the agonising spark that spreads throughout your lower body, and you repeat your futile mantra two-fold.  

(It hurts. It hurts so much.)

“Y/N, I- I’m sorry,” he begins, moving to use his dwindling force to brush away your healing fingers, “it’s too late for that. Just get somewhere safe. Please.” 

“Shut up,” you repeat. You gasp hoarsely, reinforcing your grip. The pain deepens, in the pit of your throat, your heart, and in your womb, amalgamating together inextricably in some hellish concoction just for you and you alone. “Shut up.”

“I’m sorry,” he repeats. His eyes lid, and suddenly that scar never seems so cutting. It’s all so obvious. He just looks so tired, so… resigned. As if he’s been waiting for this. “I love you.”

“I love you too. So you can’t-”

“It’s over. You know it as well as I do.” 

Somewhere, somewhere deep down, you always knew. You knew, but never wanted to admit it. He’d made his peace with dying, long before you ever met, and you can’t hold him back any longer. It almost feels… cruel. 

(Not as cruel as him.)

His hand drops, dropping with a graceless thud against your damp thigh. “Y-you’re covered in blood. That’s all mine…?”

“Yes,” you lie, voice as thick as the mixture of blood and tears that stain both you and him. “Don’t worry about me.”

He stops - and you almost think he’s going to call you out, like he’s done so many times before. 

(You wish he would.)

You’ve never been able to dupe him. But instead, his eyes crinkle at the corners.

(You love him. You love him so much.)

He smiles that hidden smile, one last time. 

His fingers that fight with yours give up, one last time.

He whispers your name, one last time.

if Akihito falls in love with someone else, how do you think Asami would react?

That's a good question. How would he react?

I have a hard time coming up with a good response because, I'm not gonna lie, I've been having a hard time reading Asami for a while now. In the beginning, when he was just a controlling a$$hole, it was kinda easier to predict what he would do (or at least, what he would say he would do - big difference here).

I mean, he threatens Akihito to unleash hell if he ever walked away, or if other men touched him, but when push comes to shove that's all it is. Threats. We don't actually see Asami taking much drastic action: I doubt that he would have killed Fei Long even if Akihito hadn't jumped between them in the Naked Truth, and in regards to Sudou, he has been remarkably slacking. For a ruthless man, Asami has been showing far too much mercy, which is at the same time fascinating and extremely confusing.

Who is this man, really? Was he always like this (more bark than bite), or is this Akihito's influence?

Maybe Kuroda is right, and something has changed in Asami Ryuichi. That said, now that we know Akihito matters more to him than his own business and his reputation, what would he do if one day, Akihito just fell for someone else? See, Anon, even now, with that weird af chapter and with all the memory/brainwashing/drugging/whoevenknows theories going on, I have a hard time even envisioning Akihito falling for another man, but let's take that gigantic leap and look at some possible scenarios.

If he "fell" for a character we already know, say, Sakazaki, under the influence of who knows what drug/ brainwashing, I would love to see Asami murder Sakazaki, first because I really want that perv to just perish, and second because that one time Asami rage killed one of Mikhail's men was a strangely satisfying moment in the Naked Truth arc.

I miss #MurderousAsamiInLove, but hey, if we are going to stick to a redemption arc, then I'd rather move to scenario 2.

Akihito falls for a character we haven't met yet (for those of you that know of my predilections when it comes to Takaba Akihito's love life, you know I would absolutely LOVE to see him fall for someone in law enforcement that is just as reckless as him) and this new guy is actually not a scumbag/sleazeball/mafia boss and makes Akihito laugh and have, perhaps, a life that is more morally aligned with Akihito's values. This, I think, is where things would get interesting. Asami knows the kind of life he has is slowly killing Akihito, both physically and spiritually (this latest chapter is pretty scary when we think of that aspect). We also know, through panels that sensei has given us throughout Pray in the Abyss, that Asami is struggling with the idea of letting Akihito delve deeper into that world. 

After their honeymoon in the island, he and Akihito came to an agreement they would not be apart anymore but we have now seen the hefty price tag of that choice - with Akihito always in danger, always a liability, always a target, and now, facing the very real possibility that some of his innocence will never be recovered. Can Asami forgive himself for that? For letting the man he loves be corrupted by the degrading nature of the world he belongs to? In this scenario, Asami would have three choices, basically:

1. He can still murder the opposition and go about his life as usual, but I honestly think we are past that point, especially if said opposition is a "good guy". That would consolidate him as The Villain in Akihito's eyes, and I don't see their relationship surviving that.

2. He can bow out, continue his career as a crimelord, acknowledge he is doing more harm than good to Akihito, and that it would be selfish to try to win him back and expose him to a whole new series of misadventures. I particularly don't like this solution very much (even though it could be executed beautifully), because it would mean Asami pretty much gave up on love.  If this was set on a different manga, this could also be Asami finally admitting that even if he wanted to get out of his life of crime, his enemies would still follow him and trouble would find him and Akihito wherever they went (uhhh… Kiryu Kazuma, anyone??), but I never got that realistically pessimistic vibe from Finder, so I am not sure Yamane Ayano would ever take us there.

3. Scenario 3, and probably my favorite, would be Asami going on a rampage and literally self imploding the moment he realizes Akihito has feelings for someone else. I would really love to see him spiralling out of control, hitting rock bottom, losing business, ruining his reputation and only then realizing that yeah, probably he can't have the cake and eat it, so either he does something about that trainwreck of life he has and puts his mercenary days behind him for good or he might as well let Akihito walk away. He knows Akihito deserves better than the life he has had by his side. The whole cat conversation he has with his half brother in this latest chapter? That's 100% foreshadowing. Asami knows that he is doing Akihito a disservice, he knows Akihito needs to be free and his lifestyle has the photographer in chains, so yeah, that moment of reckoning is gonna happen at some point. So I would really love to see Asami lose it all before he could get back on his feet and try to reconnect with Akihito, this time without the crimelord shenanigans. Again, this is not the most realistic scenario but it fits the Finder universe and would be pretty satisfying to me.

I’m so tired... Like, I’m at my mental limit. I don’t really know how to handle things right now and it’s just... exhausting.

I should make it clear, I don’t intend on hurting myself by any means... I’m just exhausted.

Maybe this post is my way of putting it all down might help me make sense of it so the thoughts are no longer floating around my head and haunting me.

Since this Quarantine has started, these are the events that have gone down in my life:

- Haven’t had a paycheck since November 2019 due to injury at work. Was never actually allowed back to work. Spent 2 months after recovery calling in again and again to be put back on the schedule.

- Been waiting for Unemployment to finally approve my financial help since March 16th, 2020. I’ve called over 300 times, spent over 100 hours in the online chat queue, and sent over 50 of the “offline” messages.

- On the topic of unemployment, I’m missing SIX weeks of Certification for payments. All of April is just... missing, so is half of May.

- My claim pinged as potentially being associated with that huge International Crime Ring incident. 3 weeks of NOT missing payments are currently being held until my identity is “proven.” I’ve been waiting over a week for my paperwork regarding this to be approved.

- My cat got sick, he can barely open one of his eyes.

- Car needed $900 in repairs.

- Got an interview, because I have a bad cough right now, I essentially lost the interview because of Corona. I understand the employer has to be careful. I can’t be mad at them. I’m just frustrated.

- I’ve gotten THREE job rejections because I didn’t have enough Customer Service experience. I have over TEN years of experience, plus two years of store manager experience.

- Medical Bills that rely on me having either a job or this unemployment to pay them are still sitting on my credit card and I just keep getting more and more interest because I put the bills on my cards so at least I wouldn’t have collections after my ass.

- I need to get a Pulmonary Functions test to address the problem with my lungs (the cough mentioned earlier.) The doctor thinks it’s asthma exacerbated by the high pollen content in the air and heat. But I can’t get the test right now because the specific labs I need in my area aren’t open yet (also because of Corona.)

- The Quarantine has also happened.

- Breathing is hard enough as it is, but wearing masks not only builds up heat on my face and makes me both light-headed and dizzy, but it’s hard to breathe through them. But I keep wearing them because I don’t want to be seen as one of those reckless assholes who thinks my “freedoms” are more important than the health of those around me. I don’t want to take away from people who have a diagnosed problem that makes wearing a mask for them impossible.

- The world is on fire because people still can’t seem to grasp that racism is bad.

I can’t do anything to fix any of these problems or even make any sort of headway. I’m so mentally exhausted. I can’t get on twitter or turn on the news or go outside without hearing more horrible, gut-wrenching things about what is happening to the people of this country. I was barely handling my mental health in February when my job essentially abandoned me because I got a bad Concussion.

Every time I think I’m getting a little better, it all crashes down on me again and I find myself facing more and more sleepless nights and the depression presses in until I feel numb.

I can’t join protests because I don’t know what is wrong with my lungs, close crowds give me high anxiety, and not being able to breathe would make me a liability to those around me. I don’t have much money so the most I’ve been able to donate to causes is a few dollars. I’ve signed petitions. I’ve tried to reblog or retweet things that seem accurate and legitimate...

But I’ve also been avoiding social media as much as I can because I’m just so tired...

Then when I do... I begin to hate and loathe myself because I have no right to take a break. I shouldn’t have a right. If I’m capable of dragging myself out of bed, I should be doing more... Those are the messages I’m constantly assaulted with if I see messages about people needing to take a break to recharge or step back and it’s just. Exhausting.

I don’t know what to do anymore... I’m still trying. I’m still trying as hard as I can.

Some days I just... don’t even want to get out of bed right now...

But... I promise I won’t hurt myself. I promise. I just need...

I don’t know. I really don’t know what I need right now. But what “I” need feels so small and irrelevant compared to the world’s needs. It makes me feel selfish.

On Friday, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after he was caught on video pressing his knee on George Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, even though Floyd told him repeatedly he couldn’t breathe. And now Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is adding a second-degree murder charge, in addition to charging the three officers who were on the scene when Floyd was killed.

The fact that Chauvin was charged at all was significant. The elevation of the charges — and the fact that the other three officers are also being charged — is even more so. That’s because it’s still quite rare for police officers to be prosecuted. A review of the data we have on police prosecutions shows that it’s uncommon for police officers to face any kind of legal consequences — let alone be convicted — for committing fatal violence against civilians.

The data we have on police misconduct is, admittedly, far from perfect. There is no national system for reporting police misconduct, and state agencies are often reluctant to release any details about investigations into police wrongdoing.

That means some of the most reliable data sets on police misconduct — usually focusing on shootings — come from journalists, researchers or political activists who study it, not the federal government. And according to data from Philip M. Stinson, a criminal justice professor at Bowling Green State University, who collects one of the most reliable data sets on police prosecutions, only a handful of police officers are charged with murder or manslaughter every year.

What’s more, there’s no evidence that substantially more police officers are facing charges, despite an uptick in protests against the use of excessive force by police. Many major cities continue to pay out millions of dollars each year to settle lawsuits against police officers, too, often without firing officers who have been repeatedly sued. So even though police misconduct has drawn greater national attention, it’s still really difficult to hold police officers legally accountable for any kind of misconduct — including fatal violence.

Over the past few years, there have been a number of high-profile trials of police officers, but it’s often hard to know whether more police are being prosecuted, or if the issue is just receiving more attention. Stinson’s Henry A. Wallace Police Crime Database is among the best sources available on prosecutions of police; it logs 10,287 criminal arrest cases between 2005 and 2014 involving 8,495 non-federal sworn law enforcement officers.

Updating this data is difficult and time-consuming, but Stinson was able to send us more recent data for prosecutions resulting from on-duty police shootings, since those are rarer and easier to track. That doesn’t include police killings that aren’t shootings, but Stinson told us that prosecutions for deaths like Floyd’s are especially rare. In fact, Stinson has found only 110 law enforcement officers nationwide1 have been charged with murder or manslaughter in an on-duty shooting — despite the fact that around around 1,000 people are fatally shot by police annually, according to a database maintained by The Washington Post. Furthermore, only 42 officers were convicted. Fifty were not and 18 cases are still pending. And as the table below shows, many of these convictions ended up being for a lesser offense — only five of these officers were convicted of murder (and did not have that conviction overturned).

Most years, the number of officers charged with murder or manslaughter in connection with an on-duty shooting is in the single digits. And despite the increased scrutiny on police violence since 2014 (when the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the Black Lives Matter movement raised public awareness of the issue), neither the number of officers charged nor the number of convictions has meaningfully increased. The number of officers charged has edged into the double digits in four of the last six years (topping out at 18 in 2015), but Stinson told us that the uptick was too small to be statistically significant. What’s more, officers are still being convicted about as often as they are not — about the same rate as before 2014 — although many of the cases since 2016 are still pending.

Why are police prosecutions still so rare? In the last few years, many cities have pledged to reform their police departments, and progressive prosecutors have even won on promises to hold police accountable for misconduct. But Kate Levine, a professor of law at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law who studies police prosecutions, told us that not all misconduct — including use of excessive or even fatal force — is illegal. “If a civilian is displaying a weapon, it’s very hard to charge [the police officer] with murder for taking action against that civilian,” she said. “And even if a civilian doesn’t have a weapon, it’s hard to charge a police officer if [the officer] can credibly say they feared for their life.”

There are other barriers to charging and convicting police, too. Prosecutors work closely with police departments, which means they may be reluctant to jeopardize that relationship by pursuing cases against officers. Police officers’ contracts also often protect them from interrogation techniques that are often used on civilians, according to Levine. And in the cases that make it to trial, judges and juries may be more inclined to believe law enforcement officers when they say their lives were threatened. All of these challenges are so baked into the system that it’s very difficult to make meaningful changes. Altering prosecutors’ relationship with police isn’t a simple or easy reform, for instance — it would be a fundamental shift in the way our criminal justice system works.

Of course, prosecution isn’t the only legal route for holding police officers accountable for misconduct. People can also sue if their constitutional rights are violated by police, which includes offenses like use of excessive force. There’s no national data source for this either, but we looked at data on police misconduct settlements in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia. And New York has paid more than $100 million on police misconduct settlements each fiscal year between 2015 and 2018, per data from the New York City Comptroller’s Office. In total, New York Police Department misconduct settlements cost the city $630 million between the fiscal years of 2011 and 2017. In Los Angeles, they totaled more than $139 million in that same time period, according to data compiled by the Los Angeles Times. And in Chicago, police misconduct settlements between the calendar years of 2011 to 2018 totaled $398 million, according to data compiled by The Chicago Reporter. In Philadelphia, that number is nearly $90 million, per data from the city’s Law Department.

This might seem like a lot of money, but experts say it’s not an especially effective way of promoting police accountability. For one thing, according to research by Joanna Schwartz, a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, police almost never pay the settlements out of pocket — instead, the money comes from cities or police departments, and often in ways that don’t put financial strain on police departments. That may help explain why some of the nation’s largest cities have a history of keeping officers on the force even when their conduct has resulted in many lawsuits — the legal actions may not actually prompt police departments to internally discipline or fire officers who are sued over and over again.

Part of the problem, according to Schwartz and others, is that it’s also very difficult to successfully sue a police officer for misconduct because the courts have granted them broad protections from legal liability for actions they take on the job. This doctrine, called “qualified immunity,” protects government officials from being sued if there isn’t a violation of clearly established law — which means, in practical terms, that a case against a police officer will often be dismissed if the alleged behavior hasn’t previously been found unconstitutional.

This has resulted in a bizarre and circular trap for people trying to sue police for misconduct: To succeed, they need to find previous cases where similar misconduct occurred, but there are very few other precedents because other plaintiffs hit the same stumbling block. “This is a big part of the reason victims of police misconduct are very rarely compensated and there is no predictable accountability for law enforcement officers who step out of line,” said Jay Schweikert, a policy analyst with the libertarian Cato Institute. His organization is one of many across the ideological spectrum that are currently urging the Supreme Court to reconsider the protections afforded to law enforcement professionals by this doctrine.

Nearly all of the experts we spoke with stressed that the legal system isn’t the only way — or even the best way — to prevent police misconduct. Seth Stoughton, a former police officer who’s now a law professor at the University of South Carolina, said he thinks police prosecutions shouldn’t overshadow other solutions that might also help change police culture. This includes being more proactive about yanking police licenses or more transparent about misconduct data, so the scope of the problem is clearer. “Legal accountability is just one type of accountability,” he told us. “It’s certainly very important ��� but it’s not the silver bullet I think a lot of people expect it to be.”

“Can I?”

The question itself takes everyone for a loop, but the real catch that makes heads turn is the barely contained excitement in Hawks’ voice. Then there’s his face, too, which is that of a kid on their first festival.

It quickly turns into an embarrassed blush that he tries to hide behind the collar of his jacket, but the damage has already been done- not only did he speak up like that, but it happened just a split second after everyone has unanimously started to move on.

“Can you?” grunts Dabi into the awkward silence with a raised brow, nodding towards the ice rink. He was a few steps ahead of them already, targeting what seemed to be the nearest punch stall available.

Hawks tagged along for the Christmas fair visit in Deika because he figured he might multitask and try this buddy thing with Jin and also catch a few snippets of info, but watching the kids slipping around on the ice when they stopped by the rink… did things to him. Nostalgic, dangerous things.

“You skate, Hawks?” Himiko asks with a glint in her eye. She also doesn't hesitate to turn back and bounce towards the rink, obviously interested in… either him, the fact, or the place itself. He's yet to get a grasp on the girl.

“ … ” His brows pull up as he sulks on behind the makeshift barrier. “... I could. A little.”

She hops against the railing, balancing over the dangerously unstable structure. “Oooh, that's neat! What are we waiting for then?”

Hawks is almost surprised enough to say it out loud, which… nice save. That sounds all kinds of counterproductive.

Doesn't help with the emotion reflecting on his face, though.

“What’s that face for?” she asks with a pout, looking almost offended before hopping back down. “I’m not going to pass up some fun, if you’re going, I’m going, too.”

“Ah---”

“Me, too!! Me, too!!!” pops Twice’s head up from nowhere between them.

“--- I see.”

“Well then,” Himiko says, her grump already forgotten as she's planting a hearty pat on Jin's head. “Can you skate, Jin?”

His brows, if they exist, inch closer as he squints, as if thinking… but he also immediately says a plain “Hell no.”

“Want me to teach you, then?”

That one rouses a confident “HELL YEAH!!” on the other hand, and he pulls on the drawstrings of his hoodie with such force that he not only disappears up to the nosetip, but an audible ripping sound also conveys the hoodie’s dislike of the abuse.

“Buckle up, then!" Himiko states with her hands on her hips. "First we’ll need some shoes, though. Also, you should get up from the ground, can’t skate like that.”

The man jumps straight into a salute upon hearing that. Considering that his coat is hanging off his head like a tent, it's quite a sight. “Aye aye, Toga sensei!!”

Hawks can’t help but let the uncertain hum break free; he is not sure he’s ready to make a clown out of himself… or that he could still stand upright at all, as a baby bird he was quite a midget. And a lot closer to the ground in case he hit it, making it less, well, scary.

“Mister, you coming too, right?” asks Himiko turning back to the two leftovers of the group.

“Oh…? Oh, sure! Ha ha…” he starts, the nervousness hardly hidden in his voice.

A stone falls from Hawks’ heart; there’s another clown in the making…

The old man (?) is so full of it, though. Just look at him. The only thing holding him back from stuttering is state of the art bullshitting skills…

“He should just admit he can’t skate,” Dabi shrugs, turning back to wherever he was headed before the minute disturbance began. “Anyway… I’m off to drown myself in mulled wine or whatever they have for sale. Smell y’all later.”

… actually, getting Dabi alone out of the picture has made this issue of being seen stumbling around half as intimidating. Which Hawks isn’t gonna complain about.

A few minutes later he’s already received his pair of skates and is mentally preparing for the task at hand. And also trying to calm down, because honestly? He’s excited. 

First things first, though, for a change his wings are more of a liability while doing this, so he gets rid of most of the feathers. Only after piling them up in the corner of the coat (more along the lines of 'bag') check room does he try the skates from a few angles on the plastic covered ground. They may be rented, but in comparison to the pair of battered ones he found by a trash container as a kid, few sizes too big then and now just as small, anything shone as long as they fit the task.

With a deep breath, he decides to give this a try and steps into the rink. One leg, then the other… a slow start at low speed, but he’ll have to remember how to stop as well… Yeah, this will do. 

Having gained some confidence on the field, he also manages to get out of the way of Toga and Twice as they burst onto the ice with reckless abandon, the latter obviously having no experience in the rink as he finishes the action mopping up every person and shaved particle in his wake.

Hawks skates up to him with a raised brow as Himiko giggles on and makes her rounds around the sprawling man. "You okay there, mate?"

His face that peeks out of the fluffy hoodie still pulled closely around his head looks either really focused… or 100% out of it. Maybe embarrassed, or having a religious experience. Hawks can't tell. In the end, he summarizes his status as follows:

"... yes."

“I told you, didn't I?” chips in Himiko, too, now that she’s over her giggling fit. “Can’t skate while on the ground. Though, if someone can do it… it’s probably you.”

"I'd say he's still got better chances with the usual method," Hawks muses out loud before offering a hand. (Not the best idea. Jot that down, Hawks: Bubaigawara Jin not only is nimble, but also heavy. Easily two-times-your-weight heavy if wings are not included. Do not engage in close combat.)

Nearly ending up on the ice aside, he notes that the number of people in the rink has dwindled down quite a bit in the past minute. Whether the masses are intimidated, afraid, or just conscious of the dumbassery of the big guns, Hawks doesn’t know.

Nor care about, really- more space for him to fuck around. Speaking of which…

He leaves the two jokers behind as Toga starts to legitimately tell Twice how to stand on the ice, and picks up just enough speed to test whether he can do another thing he usually can’t because of his wings.

The first attempt doesn’t go all that well, as he nearly slips when the skate he’s balancing on hiccups upon a deeper trail cut by others; on the second, he manages to stand on one leg, which is half of the battle, alright. He takes a second of a breather to stretch his legs before taking the route back towards the entrance again, checking in on how Twice is faring while he’s at it; seems to be going well for him. A little shaky, but he doesn’t fall ass backwards anymore.

He takes a deep sigh to collect some second hand inspiration, then shoots off to where Mister Compress’ hat has entered the field.

Hawks lifts a leg again, but this time, he also reaches behind his back to get a hold of the blade that should be riiight about… there!

Just sliding in a straight line and not stretched enough for this shit so it hurts like hell? Yes.

It would hurt even if he had stretched, to be frank.

But!! One day, he’s gonna do a legit Biellmann spin, you just watch.

“Why, Starling…!” Mister calls out with an air of awe, the doom and gloom finally lifting from his stance as the blonde is shaking his leg loose. He does stay suspiciously close to the entrance all along, though. “This comes to you as easy as flying does!”

“Could be worse,” he yells back as the momentum from the bend takes him the opposite direction.

Frankly, some may see it as cheating… but his feathers are an amazing addition he's gonna use to the fullest when on ice. So what if he has sonars to know how and where he’ll touch ground, or where to look for his feet from behind? Anyone with functional legs can do this without the help, they just need a little more practice. And why wouldn’t they? This is as close as anyone else can get to flying themselves, and boy is it a lot of fun!!

In fact, he’s so psyched that he does a pretty decent, simple Axel, nailing the landing after. Nice~

Hawks doesn’t bother opening his eyes for the next few minutes, just enjoying the chilly wind pinching his face and ears even pinker. Only then does he look up when someone with a whiff of some peach flavored alcoholic drink is about to cross his way… and goes as far as holding him by the waist, even if it’s for the fleeting moment he needs to grab his arm and spin them around in a circle.

“Not bad for a chicken.”

What the fuck, it’s Dabi.

The suspiciously happy man smirks over the baffled expression that appears on the hero's face. “You should check whether there’s a Happy Feet on Ice project, you could even make it.” Having said that, he gives Hawks a spin and joins him for the next round across the rink.

The blonde looks around with mild suspicion; he’s just noticed that Dabi is keeping up with him fine, which means… he can skate? “I thought you didn’t do, like, sports?”

He is pretty adamant on whining and moaning whenever the need to do anything but stand around menacingly arises… which is understandable, since, um… isn’t this a little… painful with a Frankensteined body like that?

Actually, it definitely is painful, because there’s one--- scratch that, now it’s two red stains on the white shirt poking out from under that ridiculous coat, and--- and blood dripping from one of his elbows, what the sincere fuck. Can he not feel that?!

“Spiked enough to do some stupid shit,” comes the enlightening sigh of an answer as they take the curve at rather high speeds, the faint smell of something not punch like also apparent on his breath. Makes the fact of him coming up close again less alarming, at the very least; a drunk (if not high as a kite…) Dabi averages out as more annoying, and less of a threat. And double the creepy, but that’s beside the point.

“You ready, birdie?”

“WhaaAA---?!” By the time he realizes that Dabi really has that exact thing on his clearly not quite lucid mind when picking up some more speed on the straight line ahead of them, he’s already airborne. Hell if he’s counting how many turns he is doing, but damn it all, he has bigger problems at hand- first, he's actually getting dizzy, and he’s never dizzy with the exception of concussions and being sick, which is concerning, but maybe it’s due to fear. Second, he needs to recalculate his fall right fucking now, because this cackling asshat has managed to throw him quite high and he's also off-balance. He has trouble landing on solid ground when plucked near clean like this as-is, fuck, he's falling already, fuck fuck fuck fUCK---

It costs him a nearly sprained ankle, some panicked arm and wing flapping and an instant heart attack, but he manages to stick the landing somehow. He’s shaking like jello as Mister claps on and Jin and Himiko cry an awed WOOO HOOO, though. In fact, his legs that he’s using as something to lean on now are about to finally give in under him.

Hawks also just about gives into the temptation of collapsing on the spot as his momentum dies off at last… if not for some fucker capitalizing on the situation and dipping him for good measure.

Dabi also adds a hearty chuckle while doing so, certainly pleased at the mess the other is right now. “And here I thought you couldn’t be shaken.” 

“I saw… my life flashing before my eyes, asshole,” he breathes between wheezes, contemplating whether he should grab onto the guy, because just hanging around doesn’t make for a stable setup and he’d rather not risk one of the concussions he's been thinking of.

A cock of the head aside, all he gets is an eyeroll. “Sure seem happy about it, don't you.”

Well, now that the villain points it out… Hawks certainly is grinning like an idiot, and has been for a while. For whatever reason, he also starts giggling uncontrollably at that.

“Shut up, will you,” he snickers while trying to find something to hang an arm onto.

It’s little use in the end, because Himiko decides to slide right into Dabi’s leg, both ruining a chance for a comeback and collapsing the unbalanced circus act.

He keeps giggling through Dabi’s moans of discontent and more, though. These few minutes were the most fun he’s had in a decade, if not more.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — An Arkansas motorcyclist carrying a gasoline-filled backpack was expected to survive after he was engulfed by a fireball when a state trooper used a Taser on him during a traffic stop, authorities said.

The Oct. 13 traffic stop was captured on dramatic dashcam video provided Thursday to The Associated Press by Arkansas State Police.

The video shows a trooper attempting to pull over a motorcycle driven by Christopher Gaylor, 38, of Alexander, Arkansas, because no license plate was visible on the motorcycle. A chase ensued with speeds approaching 100 mph (160 kph) until Gaylor jumped from his motorcycle in a residential area of North Little Rock, state police said.

A second state trooper used a Taser on Gaylor and a fire immediately erupted. State police said they later learned that Gaylor was carrying about 1 gallon (3.75 liters) of gasoline in his backpack.

The video shows troopers extinguishing the blaze and providing medical care to Gaylor, who remains hospitalized but is expected to recover, state police said.

He faces charges of felony fleeing, failure to register a vehicle, no liability insurance, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving. It was unclear whether he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.

I feel like the Umbrella Academy students just got worse and worse as they went along, like good ole’ Reggie put all his effort into the first one or two and then was like “fuck it, they’ll follow their siblings lead” and just started to ignore them. Which, ironically enough, caused even the best behaved superhero to lash out in the end. Aka. Here’s my rant about Sir Reginald’s A+ Parenting and why the Hargreeves will never function in society correctly again.

First up, you’ve got Luther Follow-Every-Single-Thing-That-Dad-Says Hargreeves who played by the rules, studied hard, and ate his vegetables. He’s the ~Former Gifted Kid™~ of the group, and stays when everyone else leaves because he’s Number One and Number One must always be a good little soldier. He blindly follows Sir Reginald, literally to the moon and back, and refuses to believe that he could die of natural causes because of course his dad is invincible he’s his dad. Despite all the tests, despite the biochemical accident, despite seeing what their ‘childhood’ did to his siblings, he can’t not still believe in their father, because even when Reginald was 100% completely and totally in the wrong, Luther blames himself.

Next up, Diego I-Don’t-Care-He-Says-Caringly-As-He-Cares-Deeply Hargreeves. Sure, he’s reckless and rebellious now, but being always compared to Number One, always living in the shadow of his bigger better best brother, would do that to a person (read: Loki Laufeyson). So he turned his back on his father and threw all his efforts into becoming an unofficial vigilante. The police academy would never accept him, after all, when he displays such a profound hatred towards obeying orders. He realises now what a sick and manipulative bastard Reginald was, and has become cynical and bitter. He will never be anything other than number two, after all.

Allison Well-This-Is-A-Shit-Situation-Let’s-Try-To-Make-The-Best-Of-It Hargreeves decided to use her training to improve her life, becoming rich, famous, successful... and unhappy. I Heard A Rumor allowed her to not only lie to the people around her, but also to lie to herself. She doesn’t like the life she leads, but hey, at least she’s now the manipulator rather than the manipulatee, right? Her close relationship with Luther always prevented her from acting out too much, but now even that is crumbling around her, so, you know, thanks dad. She’s been living in her own illusion for so long, she doesn’t know what to do with reality anymore.

Number 4, the ignored I-Came-Out-To-Have-A-Good-Time-But-Honestly-I’m-Feeling-So-Attacked-Right-Now middle child was the beginning of the end. Klaus kept himself to himself, not wanting to follow in his older siblings footsteps, but not knowing how to resist his ‘training’ either. So instead of embracing it like Luther or accepting it like Diego or even using it to his advantage like Allison, he tries to block it out, with drugs and alcohol and sex. Being locked in a mausoleum on a regular basis from 5 years old onward might just have something to do with that. He refuses to conform to gender binaries or sexual orientations, and this combined with the addictions makes him an unstable liability in his siblings eyes. Sir Reginald, never father, never dad, pushed him more than he did any other student, shoving him to the breaking point again and again and again yet never teaching him how to pick up the pieces afterwards. Alive, but not living, not caring what happens to him, not even caring when he was tortured for over 10 hours straight because the “Hey, guess what? No one’s going to even know I’m missing” apathy he experiences is a feeling he’s very familiar with. And don’t even get me started on Vietnam.

Next is the I’m-Too-Old-To-Live-But-Too-Young-To-Die time traveler, not even having a name to call his own, let alone a home. Number Five refuses to abide by Reginald’s rules, being too sure, too arrogant, too rebellious to listen to his warnings. He jumps. And he gets stuck. A 60-year-old in a 10-year-old’s body, a world of contradictions. A black coffee drinker like a seasoned soldier, but a peanut-butter-and-jelly eater like an over-excited child, he doesn’t know how to fit his future into his past. His siblings still see him as the kid brother they tragically lost at such a young age, and continue to treat him as one, resulting in a childish tantrum with a grown-up coping mechanism that leaves Diego and Luther searching for his drunk ass, and not for the being-beaten-up-as-we-speak Klaus. He wants to end it all but know he can’t, not now, not with the impending apocalypse, not when I’ve-literally-just-sat-down-and-you’re-telling-me-I-only-have-eight-days-to-save-the-entire-fucking-world?!?!

By the time Ben arrived, the rest of the siblings were a mass of confusion, chaos, and mistrust and he had an actual monster inside of him begging to be let out, his entire life being the very epitome of This-Is-So-Sad-Alexa-Play-Despacito. So, he keeps to himself but continues to observe, really only interacting with Klaus and even then, it’s long after his death before No.4 is sober enough to talk back. But still, he sticks around despite the constant reminder of his terrible gruesome death, realising that out of all of his siblings, Klaus is the one who need the most protecting (even if that means protecting him from himself). He’s sarcastic but caring, looking out for his addict brother on more than one occasion, no matter how ghostly he currently is. It’s only in Number 6′s death, and therefore his freedom from Reginald’s clutches, that he’s able to become the person he always should have been. Dying saved him.

And finally, Vanya With-Great-Power-Comes-Zero-Responsibility Hargreeves, too powerful for even Sir Reginald to control, so hey, lets just slap some pills on and lies on that and hope it goes away. She’s left out from the very beginning because “there’s nothing special about you” and children can be cruel. Especially super-powered, manipulated and emotionally abused children. She’s convinced that she’s ordinary, boring, a fluke with a mediocre talent for the violin. So what does she do? Well, what any good Hargreeves student would do! Repress the absolute shit out of those emotions.
