Seems that it's a controversial opinion these days that, if you want your book to be good, there should be a Central Theme and Concept.
#sometimes you write a story thats like. wouldnt it be fucked up if this happened#without really saying anything about anything#and thats fine. but its not going to have cultural sticking power#its a theory that really pisses off the 'maybe the curtains were just blue!' gang#personally i think its a big factor for why so many booktok darlings#enjoy a brief celebration of popularity but then fade away to be replaced by the next fad#because they are more or less set dressing#they throw in gods bc fantasy has gods#they put in dragons bc fantasy has dragons#they put in magic bc fantasy has magic#but they rarely want to dig deep and think about these ideas or what they add to the story#they just put these things in bc theyre sparkly#and it all clashes. it distorts any theme that might have managed to creep into the narrative#it fills pages with meaningless banter and copy and paste protagonists#and i know its not just these books these sorts of things have always been published#but theyre just being so shoved in my face now i cant escape them#and maybe it annoys me a leetle bit 🤏
