Between sessions of enthralled study, the beckon for a lounge became a better and better sounding respite for warm eyelids and fingers perpetually fixed into the position to turn a page.

Within the humid confines of the stone sauna made for an oddly refreshing abode - eyelids feeling comfortably heavy, after the healthy time they'd spent staring into browned parchment and aged ink print, and their backs finally able to stretch after having been hunched over academic texts and historical accounts. Their leisure period was useful for both pit-stopping their continuously running minds and reflecting on what they had learned. . .

What proved jarring, if equally oddly-refreshing the same, was on one's exit of the sauna - warmed, dewy flesh whipped by the biting cold. . . Shivers shot up spines, immediate goosebumps ran on skin, and mildly-moistened hair frizzed up at the sudden shift in temperature.

At the very least, they'd experienced the best of either climate’s comfort, and more importantly could amusedly poke at each other's similarly freshly-fluffed fur following the use of a vigorously applied towel.

I already mentioned that I totally get Goldmund's conflicted relationship with art but what I also love about this book is that it gave me this weird feeling of being at peace as an artist, in one regard at least.

My dissatisfaction and desire to meet certain ideals, envy of the better artists might be something I can never get rid of, but it's great to mentally come back to this novel and rediscover that actually, I don't have to be the best artist out there, that my technical skill doesn't have to be perfect for my art to be considered good. In a way, it's refreshing that Goldmund never strives to achieve the best technical skill, just good enough to do justice to the ideas. He never beats himself up if his works are not as great/polished as master Niklaus's. They're great nonetheless, they're admired, they awaken feeling and thought and, most importantly, they channel the meaning, the so-called mystery.

Nor do I have to create the magnum opus, give shape to the ultimate idea, the perfect representation of me as an artist and my perceived purpose. It's okay if I don't get to make the thing I'd love to share. I want to try, I will try, that's the closest thing to a life goal I have. And maybe it'll end up being dogshit in one way or another, but you know what? That's okay too.

Because if my works are genuine and moving enough or maybe hilarious enough, even if they're simple, then it should be enough, shouldn't it?

“How good is your Narrator at socializing?”

Horrible. Let me explain.

He doesn’t try to get attached to people anymore. He prefers to analyze them. He wants to make sure they won’t affect his game too much if they find their way into it. Or wants to see how much of a threat level they are. So therefore, he doesn’t socialize. AND IF HE DID SOCIALIZE—

He’d end up messing up a lot. He’s guarded himself from becoming close with people due to what it made him do years ago (lore no wayyy), and if affected how he’s able to interact with others. He’s blunt, snappy, and always has a scowl on his face. I feel like he’d be known as “The Grinch” of Narrators or something. If he really does try to put effort into talking, he’ll just not be able to function and stare with a grimace and give a few occasional “yes, “no”, or grunts. Then he’ll leave as soon as possible.

He really doesn’t need to socialize with anyone anyways. It’s all just useless. It can’t help him, it’ll only hurt him. That’s all that people have ever done. Hurt him, hurt him. He doesn’t need friends, or people to talk to. He only needs his game and his books.
