How Google PageSpeed Works: Improve Your Score and Search Engine Ranking

This article is from my friend Ben who runs Calibre, a tool for monitoring the performance of websites. We use Calibre here on CSS-Tricks to keep an eye on things. In fact, I just popped over there to take a look and was notified of some little mistakes that slipped by, and I fixed them. Recommended!

In this article, we uncover how PageSpeed calculates it’s critical speed score.

It’s no secret that speed has become a crucial factor in increasing revenue and lowering abandonment rates. Now that Google uses page speed as a ranking factor, many organizations have become laser-focused on performance.

Last year, Google made two significant changes to their search indexing and ranking algorithms:

In March, indexing became based on the mobile version of a page, rather than desktop.

In July, the SEO ranking algorithm was updated to include page speed as a ranking factor for both mobile pages and ads.

From this, we’re able to state two truths:

The speed of your site on mobile will affect your overall SEO ranking.

If your pages load slowly, it will reduce your ad quality score, and ads will cost more.

Google wrote:

Faster sites don’t just improve user experience; recent data shows that improving site speed also reduces operating costs. Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed — that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings.

To understand how these changes affect us from a performance perspective, we need to grasp the underlying technology. PageSpeed 5.0 is a complete overhaul of previous editions. It’s now being powered by Lighthouse and CrUX (Chrome User Experience Report).

This upgrade also brings a new scoring algorithm that makes it far more challenging to receive a high PageSpeed score.

What changed in PageSpeed 5.0?

Before 5.0, PageSpeed ran a series of heuristics against a given page. If the page has large, uncompressed images, PageSpeed would suggest image compression. Cache-Headers missing? Add them.

These heuristics were coupled with a set of guidelines that would likely result in better performance, if followed, but were merely superficial and didn’t actually analyze the load and render experience that real visitors face.

In PageSpeed 5.0, pages are loaded in a real Chrome browser that is controlled by Lighthouse. Lighthouse records metrics from the browser, applies a scoring model to them, and presents an overall performance score. Guidelines for improvement are suggested based on how specific metrics score.

Like PageSpeed, Lighthouse also has a performance score. In PageSpeed 5.0, the performance score is taken from Lighthouse directly. PageSpeed’s speed score is now the same as Lighthouse’s Performance score.

Now that we know where the PageSpeed score comes from, let’s dive into how it’s calculated, and how we can make meaningful improvements.

What is Google Lighthouse?

Lighthouse is an open source project run by a dedicated team from Google Chrome. Over the past couple of years, it has become the go-to free performance analysis tool.

Lighthouse uses Chrome’s Remote Debugging Protocol to read network request information, measure JavaScript performance, observe accessibility standards and measure user-focused timing metrics like First Contentful Paint, Time to Interactive or Speed Index.

How Lighthouse calculates the Performance Score

During performance tests, Lighthouse records many metrics focused on what a user sees and experiences. There are six metrics used to create the overall performance score. They are:

Time to Interactive (TTI)

Speed Index

First Contentful Paint (FCP)

First CPU Idle

First Meaningful Paint (FMP)

Estimated Input Latency

Lighthouse will apply a 0 – 100 scoring model to each of these metrics. This process works by obtaining mobile 75th and 95th percentiles from HTTP Archive, then applying a log normal function.

Following the algorithm and reference data used to calculate Time to Interactive, we can see that if a page managed to become "interactive" in 2.1 seconds, the Time to Interactive metric score would be 92/100.

Once each metric is scored, it’s assigned a weighting which is used as a modifier in calculating the overall performance score. The weightings are as follows:

Metric Weighting Time to Interactive (TTI) 5 Speed Index 4 First Contentful Paint 3 First CPU Idle 2 First Meaningful Paint 1 Estimated Input Latency 0

These weightings refer to the impact of each metric in regards to mobile user experience.

In the future, this may also be enhanced by the inclusion of user-observed data from the Chrome User Experience Report dataset.

You may be wondering how the weighting of each metric affects the overall performance score. The Lighthouse team have created a useful Google Spreadsheet calculator explaining this process:

Using the example above, if we change (time to) interactive from 5 seconds to 17 seconds (the global average mobile TTI), our score drops to 56% (aka 56 out of 100).

Whereas, if we change First Contentful Paint to 17 seconds, we’d score 62%.

TTI is the most impactful metric to your performance score. Therefore, to receive a high PageSpeed score, you will need a speedy TTI measurement.

Moving the needle on TTI

At a high level, there are two significant factors that hugely influence TTI:

The amount of JavaScript delivered to the page

The run time of JavaScript tasks on the main thread

Our Time to Interactive guide explains how TTI works in great detail, but if you’re looking for some quick no-research wins, we’d suggest: Reducing the amount of JavaScript

Where possible, remove unused JavaScript code or focus on only delivering a script that will be run by the current page. That might mean removing old polyfills or replacing third-party libraries with smaller, more modern alternatives.

It’s important to remember that the cost of JavaScript is not only the time it takes to download it. The browser needs to decompress, parse, compile and eventually execute it, which takes non-trivial time, especially in mobile devices.

Effective measures for reducing the amount of scripts from your pages include:

Reviewing and removing polyfills that are no longer required for your audience.

Understanding the cost of each third-party JavaScript library. Use webpack-bundle-analyser or source-map-explorer to visualise the how large each library is.

Modern JavaScript tooling (like webpack) can break-up large JavaScript applications into a series of small bundles that are automatically loaded as a user navigates. This approach is known as code splitting and is extremely effective in improving TTI.

Service workers that will cache the bytecode result of a parsed and compiled script. If you’re able to make use of this, visitors will pay a one-time performance cost for parse and compilation. After that, it’ll be mitigated by cache.

Monitoring Time to Interactive

To successfully uncover significant differences in user experience, we suggest using a performance monitoring system (like Calibre!) that allows for testing a minimum of two devices; a fast desktop and a low-mid range mobile phone.

That way, you’ll have the data for both the best and worst case of what your customers experience. It’s time to come to terms that your customers aren’t using the same powerful hardware as you.

In-depth manual profiling

To get the best results in profiling JavaScript performance, test pages using intentionally slow mobile devices. If you have an old phone in a desk drawer, this is a great second-life for it.

What about the other metrics?

Speed Index, First Contentful Paint and First Meaningful Paint are all browser-paint-based metrics. They’re influenced by similar factors and can often be improved at the same time.

It’s objectively easier to improve these metrics as they are calculated by how quickly a page renders. Following the Lighthouse Performance audit rules closely will result in these metrics improving.

Tracking your progress and making meaningful improvements

Google's newly updated search console, Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights, are a great way to get initial visibility into the performance of your pages but fall short for teams that need to continuously track and improve the performance of their pages.

Continuous performance monitoring is essential to ensuring speed improvements last, and teams get instantly notified when regressions happen. Manual testing introduces unexpected variability in results and makes testing from different regions as well as on various devices nearly impossible without a dedicated lab environment.

Who is a Marine Surveyor – Responsibilities, Qualifications, and Skills

Shipyards take great care in designing and building ships, with regular inspections. They are aware that every mistake they make will cost them heavily in terms of delays and fines.

Once the construction of a ship is finished, the shipowners must then ascertain that the vessel meets the standard laid out in the building contract.

Although most organizations employ in-house specialists, who ensure that the vessel meets the benchmark and an independent inspection may sometimes be required for the same.

Third-party inspectors may need to separately conduct a survey of a vessel. Generally, marine insurers might require an assessment of the condition of a vessel prior to some legal arbitration. Or standardization bodies might need people who are qualified to ascertain the seaworthiness of a ship prior to being registered. In all these scenarios, specialists with an enormous amount of maritime experience and knowledge often handle the situation.

These specialists who inspect and monitor various ships are known as “Marine Surveyors”. Considered to be one of the most prestigious vocations in the industry, it demands a great deal of technical know-how.

In this article, we will dive into the world of marine surveyors, and analyse their responsibilities, qualifications, and skills.

What are the Duties of a Marine Surveyor?

Marine surveyors can inspect all types of ships, right from pleasure yachts that are under 20 meters, all the way up to tankers measuring over 200 meters. To ensure proper functioning and disbursement of duties, there are a number of different responsibilities that these surveyors are required to fulfil.

The primary responsibility of a marine surveyor is conducting thorough and extensive surveys of a ship. Prior to delivery, a complete analysis of the entire vessel must be carried out, as this determines the initial seaworthiness of the vessel.

While playing an important role in maritime arbitration and insurance, it also lets the shipowner know that the vessel they are receiving is in the best possible condition.

During the life of the vessel, various surveys are carried out for different reasons. This could be annual surveys that are used to study the vessel performance on a yearly basis. Or there could be interim surveys that are intended to inspect specific parts of a ship. In case of registration or other formalities, special surveys can also be conducted.

Another responsibility of a marine surveyor is to ensure that machinery and equipment are functioning as required. This includes essential components such as engines, communications and navigation. It also requires emergency and safety equipment to be checked under realistic operating conditions. The surveyor must witness the tests taking place and should also ascertain that any generated reports fall within the acceptable standards.

Along with inspections, surveyors must ascertain the load regulations and limits that have been calculated for a vessel. Gross tonnage and deadweight tonnage (DWT) are to be cross-checked with the values stored in the stability handbook of the ship. Checking the load lines and draft markers are also required, as some companies may attempt to overload their ships. The surveyor assists in load line assignments and checks weight distribution as well.

The next duty that surveyors are required to perform is the investigation of maritime accidents. This could be as a part of an insurance organization, or from the shipowners’ side. When it comes to claiming marine insurance, ascertaining the condition of the ship prior to the accident is important.

Determining the extent of the damage is also required. For this, marine surveyors consult reports of the vessel before the accident. In case of being submerged, salvage operations may be required. Prior to commencing a salvage, surveys may also be conducted to ensure that the wreck can be safely moved without damage to both the vessel and the surrounding biosphere. These marine surveyors can also be employed by Protection and Indemnity (P&I) insurance companies to work as third-party specialists for ascertaining damage compensation.

In case of an accident, a marine surveyor will be required to investigate the occurrence from an official capacity as deemed by a relevant court of maritime law. They report to the court in all matters pertaining to the condition and performance of the ship. They also act as expert witnesses who can provide a clear picture of the condition of the ship. In case of any deaths, the surveyor may have to assist the coroner in ascertaining probable causes and locations of demise. Thus, marine surveyors also play an important role in maritime law and serve as advisors to a court of law.

Lastly, surveyors can also be tasked with a fair and unbiased evaluation of maritime assets. When buying a ship from another party, it would be wise to engage a marine surveyor to determine the condition of the boat that you are receiving. In case you wish to sell a ship, surveyors provide a realistic figure for the market value of the ship, known as the Fair Market Value, that is from an unbiased analysis. During damage reports or component replacements, marine surveyors may also determine the expected costs to be incurred while accounting for various factors in the industry.

Some of the other duties that marine surveyors can perform include:

1. Marine warranty surveys 2. Charter surveys 3. Flag state surveys 4. Offshore structural surveys 5. Hull and equipment surveys 6. Cargo surveys

The Different Types of Surveyors

Since this industry is incredibly diverse and vast, different surveys are carried out by specialised surveyors who are experts in their respective fields. In this section, we will look at the various types of surveyors and the organizations that they fall under.

There can be two main types of surveyors depending on their primary objectives- proactive surveyors, and reactive surveyors. Proactive surveyors aim to identify problems before they occur. In general, they are given responsibility for assessing a vessel prior to purchase, or during routine checks.

In case any flaw or damage is located, a probable mishap is averted. Hence, the surveyors are considered to be proactive. On the other hand, reactive surveyors are called in after some incident has occurred. They include insurance, arbitration, and claimant surveyors. Since they assess the vessel as a reaction to some occurrence, they are referred to as reactive surveyors.

Now moving on to the main types of surveyors. Cargo surveyors are specialists hired by a charterer or organization that is transporting cargo in bulk. The cargo owner entrusts the surveyor with ensuring that the cargo is loaded and unloaded in a manner that is appropriate. In addition to assessing the cargo operations, the surveyor also calculates the permissible loads, maximum and minimum drafts, and cross-checks the manifest with the loaded cargo.

In the case of loose goods carried in bulk carriers, there may also be a necessity to ensure that there are sufficient provisions to prevent cargo from shifting during the journey. In case of expensive and high-value goods, the surveyor may be required to personally oversee the loading and unloading operations. When transporting goods prone to contamination or infection, the surveyor is responsible for ensuring that precautions are taken to secure the goods in a safe manner. As the name suggests, the cargo surveyor is responsible for all cargo related operations and inspections.

Classification surveyors are representatives of classification society and ensure that a vessel adheres to pre-set regulations. A classification society is a standardization body that is responsible for ensuring that ships are built and operated in a manner that is safe. They may impose restrictions on ships based on the vessel class, and require the ship to maintain these standards to retain their registration under the society.

The Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, and Indian Register of Shipping are prominent classification societies. These surveyors are required to inspect a vessel and its machinery to ensure that it meets the set standards. They also serve as representatives of the vessel’s flag state, to ensure that domestic statutes are adhered to. A flag state refers to the country’s flag under which a ship operates. This surveyor checks the construction, outfitting, maintenance, pollution levels etc. of a vessel and passes a recommendation to both the flag state and the classification society. If there are any issues, a window of time is provided to correct the problem. These surveyors usually work alongside government surveyors.

Government surveyors are officials that represent two main points of interest- a flag state representative, and a port state representative. The flag state official ensures that a vessel registered under its country meets satisfactory requirements to continue their registration. In case of any prolonged and uncorrected issue, the flag state has the power to suspend or revoke a registration. This prevents the ship from entering any port, as it no longer has any affiliation. On the other hand, the port state official reports to the government of a country in which a particular ship is docked. They are tasked with ensuring that all incoming and departing ships satisfy requirements pertaining to that particular port. In addition to surveying ships, they can also be responsible for ensuring that the draft limits of a port are maintained.

A yacht and small craft (Y&SC) surveyor is responsible for inspecting and monitoring a small boat. They check the various equipment and machinery onboard. Since the majority of these vessels are for personal uses or for pleasure, the owners hire surveyors to inspect their vessel. Although there are some surveyors who operate under organizations, the vast majority of these hires are as independent surveyors.

An insurance and warranty surveyor inspects vessels for insurance and P&I purposes. They can be hired by either party in an insurance claim. For instance, insurance companies often hire staff surveyors to estimate the damage and determine whether it falls under a valid insurance claim. The claimant, on the other hand, would hire a surveyor to conduct a private inquiry, and may use their report in a court of maritime law. Although insurance companies often suggest that claimants hire a surveyor to run their own analysis, both parties prefer involving an unbiased third-party. It is illegal for an insurance company to force a particular surveyor on the claimant.

Lastly, an independent surveyor is an individual who carries surveys independently, without being associated without any organization. They are usually hired to run private third-party reports on a particular vessel construction or incident. They offer their services in pre-purchase surveys, evaluation, draft surveys, private insurance enquiries etc. Independent surveyors rely mainly on goodwill and spoken publicity for increasing their customer base.

Training, Qualifications and Accreditation

Being a marine surveyor requires several skills that need to be certified from official bodies. The training and certification phase is extremely important as it creates a foundation for being a successful surveyor. To show expertise in certain skills, working in that field for several years can be useful.

For instance, to be a surveyor for container ships, having worked onboard such a ship or at a port terminal can serve as a certification prospective clients wish to see. On the other hand, if you wish to survey a particular domain that you have no valid experience in, being certified by some third-party is possible. Taking specific courses is relatively easy, as there are a large number of bodies that conduct them. These include Lloyd’s Register, Maritime Training Academy, and Det Norske Veritas Germanischer Lloyd (DNV GL). It is interesting to note that most standardization societies provide certification on a large number of maritime courses.

When it comes to certification for Marine Surveying itself, there are relatively few options available. This may be because surveying is a skill learnt with extensive experience, and is not something that can be picked up overnight with a classroom course. Reputation is king in this industry, and no amount of certification will bring in clients unless you possess certain key qualities.

Nevertheless, there are certain international organizations providing certification in this surveying. These include Lloyd’s Maritime Academy, International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS), the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS), and the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS). Members of SAMS, known as Accredited Marine Surveyors (AMS) hold valid certification and represent a large group of surveyors who establish precedents and maintain standards for all members to follow. Most societies suggest getting immediate experience under a marine surveyor after completing their courses. However, one can also directly approach an experienced surveyor at first instead of joining for a course.

The main skills that prospective clients look for in a surveyor are subjective. Generally, well-spoken and confident individuals portray a positive image. However, anyone who is able to prove their expertise in this field is quickly given opportunities. A candidate must be able to write reports in a compact yet detailed manner. Since survey reports are the first impression of any surveyor, they must stick to mutually acceptable standards. In addition to these skills, having prior experience in any field of the maritime industry is preferred. Training under an experienced surveyor is the best method to picking up essentials and useful skills.

Salary and Perks for Marine Surveyors

The enormous responsibility of determining the condition of a ship is by no means an easy job. Livelihoods, industries, and large amounts of money hang in the balance waiting for the marine surveyor’s approval. When estimating the average fee or commission per survey, it is important not to follow a ‘one size fits all’ strategy. The perks and benefits that are enjoyed by surveyors engaged with organizations include medical insurance, rent allowances, travel allowances etc. It also provides them with a network of like-minded individuals involved in the same field.

Report preparation is regarded in the marine surveying industry to be a tricky subject. It can be the make-or-break component in any surveyor’s career. A well written and detailed report would increase their client base through word of mouth marketing. On the other hand, a poor report could also effectively tank their prospects. Thus, most marine surveyors go to great lengths to learn the skill of report writing.

The important points to look out for include language that is easy to comprehend, a detailed analysis of the various areas of the vessel, photographs or other visual media to emphasize on a particular finding, and concisely preparing a report. Most clients find reading bulky and large reports to be counterproductive. They prefer to keep away from surveyors who use too many words to convey a simple concept. Being able to write succinct reports that even laymen can understand will go a long way in attracting more customers.

ENTRY 1 - ABOUT ME

My name is Paul Sebastiani and I amStudying in my second year of Sports Media at the Holmesglen Institute.

I transferred out of a Bachelor of Accounting to pursue a career in sports media and wanting to fulfil my lifelong dream of becoming either an AFL or horse racing commentator.

AFL and horse racing are two of my most loved sports. I am a passionate and opinionated Carlton Football Club member and I also contribute written articles to Carlton’s reserve team the Northern Blues.

Both clubs hold a very close place to my heart.

My admiration and passion for horse racing stemmed from listening to callers such as Greg Miles and Bill Collins ply their craft for many years in Victorian racing.

I am enamoured at the ability of the horse to get their noses in front at the finish post with either bold front running efforts or flashing come from behind victories.

As well as Collins and Miles, the great 3AW AFL calling duo of the late Clinton Grybas and retired calling veteran Rex Hunt will always be two media personalities whom I focus on and learn from.

Away from studies - as well as working for the Northern Blues - I work part time in a bottle shop to get myself through my studies and ensure I’m in a comfortable financial position when I complete my course at Holmesglen.

My first year of study at Holmesglen was a great success.

For the year I averaged a distinction across the board with all the subjects I studied showcasing my unwavering commitment to the course and determination to succeed in the sport media industry.

Despite a successful year, I believe I can improve my time management skills having lost a some marks over the duration of the first year for not handing in assessment on deadline.

ENTRY 2 - INTRODUCTION TO SPORT MARKETING

This semester I am looking forward to continuing to grow my ability to work within a team, improving time management skills and developing my knowledge in sports marketing.

Last semester I felt as though there were a few communication break downs when working within a group. However, there were more positives than negatives.

I began to develop a better understanding at using the strengths of others to assist a group project. I believe this semester I will continue to develop that aspect of academic work.

This semester I will continue to improve my time management skills. I need to continue to prioritise the most important things in my life at the moment. Getting the right balance between my degree and life outside of school is important as well.

In relation to sports marketing, I am really looking ahead to learning how sporting organisations use marketing to enhance their brand and influence stakeholders.

Furthermore, the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) the course implements is such a useful tool for now and the future. I believe it makes the course have a realistic feel to it rather than always having a theoretical feel to it.

WIL refers to educational studies that implement academic learning into a workplace environment (Fleming & Haigh 2017).

WIL has allowed me to impart the various academic theories and skills learnt in Sports Marketing out into the workplace.

Throughout Sports Marketing and Emerging Media Production WIL with Old Paradians Football Club has made me accountable for my work especially in a group environment.

I have to commit to tasks in the group projects we undertake and the peer review marking system ensures this as well.

Plus, completing work for organisations means I must take pride and have a high standard for the work completed.

From a professional level, the experience I will garner from working with these sporting organisations I believe will hold me in good stead when finishing my degree and looking for work. It will seperate my resume from the rest.

ENTRY 3 - IMPORTANCE OF MARKET RESEARCH

I believe market research is one the most important aspects if an organisation wants their product (good and or service) to succeed.

Market Research refers to an organisation collecting statistics and data which in turn will attempt to assist the organisation to make informed and educated decisions (Small Business Development Corporation 2018).

Market research can be divided into primary data whereby the organisation conducts its own quantitative and qualitative research direct from the source of subject in order to gain insight into aspects of their market (Bradley 2010).

It can also be divided into secondary data whereby the organisation uses existing data and statistics from organisations (Bradley 2010) such as the Australia Bureau of Statistics in order to gain insight to a market.

Moreover, specific examples of types of market research that can be used in developing a marketing strategy include;

1. Surveys/questionnaires - Using individuals as samples answering questions of which the answers are statistically analysed (Bradley 2010).

2. Focus groups - A type of qualitative research whereby certain people are asked questions about their values, beliefs, perceptions of goods and or services provided by an organisations (Bradley 2010).

3. Observational reporting - Is a type of research conducted whereby the researcher is not interfering with the sample subject Below is an example of an observational report used for the Old Paradians Amateur Football. My group and I are going to be using this as an important market research tool when conducting the comprehensive marketing strategy for the club.

ENTRY 4 - WORK WITH THIRD PARTIES

As part of our Sports Marketing subject each student has been assigned to groups in order to create a comprehensive sport marketing strategy for VAFA football clubs.

The VAFA clubs are considered the third party in this situation. My group were assigned the Old Paradians and have been working closely with them to ensure wants and needs are met from all parties involved be that the students ourselves, lecturer Robbie Coyle and the football club.

Working with a third party such as the Old Paradians has its pros and cons.

The positive aspect of working with the football club allows us as students to get an experience as to what working in sports marketing will require from a professional level.

It also allows us to continue to network with organisations outside the university to better our chances of employment when finishing our course.

The only challenging aspect is the ability to marry up meeting times and the project GAANT chart around Old Paradians busy schedule outside of our marketing work for them.

The improvements that can be made are potentially sacrificing a little more time outside of university to ensure the group can all meet together at the club.

This would ensure everyone understands the requirements of their role in the project and contributions are evenly spread.

Additionally, being in constant contact with the club on at least a weekly basis at bare minimum will also help us to achieve our goals and relieve any issues and queries from the football club.

It will also allow us to meet our project deadlines set out by the course and our GAANT chart.

ENTRY 5 - EFFECTIVE & HIGH PERFORMING TEAM MEMBER

There are many aspects I have imparted and learnt about being an effective and high performing team member over the course of Semester 1 in 2018.

Effective communication is such an integral part of being an effective and high performing team member.

The ability to convey messages in a clear and concise manner via the right platforms has allowed me to improve the quality of work I have produced.

It has also allowed for strong relationships between my fellow group members and peers.

I believe there is room for improvement for my communication though.

Case in point being the way I commented and completed the peer review section of assessment four.

The detail I went into may have been expanded a little more to give those receiving the feedback a better idea of where they could potentially improve their own work and what parts they were doing well with.

Furthermore, I believe being punctual and adhering to deadlines is an important aspect of being an effective and high performing team member.

This area is a continual work in progress for me as I try to balance work, school and my personal life at the same time.

Another aspect of being an effective and high performing team member is the ability to delegate tasks.

Throughout the semester this has been a challenge given some extenuating circumstances that occurred during the Sports Marketing research proposal and strategy.

However, my ability to delegate realistic tasks to group members even with the adversity faced definitely helped with the outcome and final product of our marketing strategy for Old Paradians.

ENTRY 6 - THE IMPORTANCE OF SPORTS MARKETING CONCEPTS AND TRENDS

One of the very first things I learnt through Sports Marketing are the two types of sport marketing that can occur.

The first is marketing of sport which Smith (2008) refers to the advertising/promotion of the actual sport or a sporting event taking place. The perfect example of this is the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games lead up promotion on Youtube as attached below.

The other concept of sport marketing is marketing through sport. Smith (2008) refers to marketing through sport as a non sport product being marketed through an association of sport. A clear example of this is in the image attached below. Here there are various sponsors who are not sporting organisations but have aligned themselves with a baseball team to promote and expose their brand in conjunction with the team.

Marketing through sport has become and will continue to be a pivotal part in the financial solvency of sporting organisations. It is believed that in 2015 an estimated US $45 Billion was received by sport organisations on the back of corporate sponsorships (Budati & Bansal 2012).

An interesting trend I also focused on was Digital Marketing. Ryan (2014) refers to digital marketing as organisations and businesses taking their brands and advertising and promoting them via the internet and connected devices.

ENTRY 7 - END OF SEMESTER REFLECTION

The first semester of 2018 has finally come to an end I have gained so many new insights into sports marketing thanks to the guidance of Sports Marketing subject teacher Robbie Coyle.

There were many challenges and rewards during the three months of this subject.

We had a variety of assessments to complete during the semester the first being a market research proposal in our assigned project groups and VAFA football club.

There were a few communication breakdowns early on in the semester with the group I was working in as well as with the football club which hurt the quality of our overall market research proposal.

The group was able to pass the assessment, however we did expect to do a lot better than we did and learnt a valuable lesson about effective communication, delegation and punctuality when being part of a team.

The market research proposal was then refined in order to help the next major assessment which was the marketing strategy for Old Paradians AFC.

The beginning of this assessment was not ideal as two team members were unable to contribute to the assignment due to personal circumstances.

However, fellow group member Will and I were able to unite and ensure our contact with the club and between ourselves was done on a consistent basis in order to ensure the success of the marketing strategy.

Old Paradians AFC were fantastic in their co-operation and commitment to our marketing strategy from the moment we started to make our goals clear and how we were going to go about it.

Will and I continually let the club know our progress of the marketing strategy and consistently organised meetings with them over the semester to ensure the successful completion of the strategy.

Despite our challenges during the semester, Will and I were able to produce a comprehensive 27-page marketing strategy document as well as a presentation that summarised the document.

Additionally, a new aspect of sport marketing I learnt that I believe will remain with me throughout my studies is the ‘Product Market Expansion Grid’ as shown below (Gobloges 2012).

Mello (2017) describes the grid as a development for business growth strategy that assesses the bond between new and existing products and new and existing markets.

Mello (2017) also explains the concept of each section of the grid by stating the strategy of a business focusing on market penetration (existing markets and products) is low risk, a focus on product development (existing marketing and new products) is of some risk, a focus on market development (existing product and new markets) is also of some risk and finally a focus on Diversification (new products and new markets) is the highest risk for a business to take.

This area of sports marketing has allowed me to better understand how businesses position themselves in order to assess their situation from a product and market point of view in order to make decisions that will hopefully lead to a profit.

This semester has been full of not only academic learning but many life lessons which I can take into the workplace and put to great use to benefit myself and others.

I am looking forward with a high level of optimism to my next phase of studies in semester two and beyond.

Click the Registration Server in the workspace to open the Registration Server configuration window. Click the Services tab and then click the IoT service in the left pane. Click the “On” button to enable the service

D. Configure the registration server

a. Click the Config tab. In the Global Settings window, change the Display Name to StudentID_Name_IoT Registration Server (your student ID and your name followed by Registration Server) and change the DHCP/DNS IPv4 setting from the default Static to DHCP

b. Verify that the server has received an IPv4 address from the Home Gateway by clicking the Desktop tab and then the IP Configuration icon. (my server IP address is 209.185.220.3, yours could be different). Please note your IP address for your server. Close the Registration server window.

2. Register Tablet to the Registration Server

A. Click the Tablet icon to open the Config tab. Select Wireless tab from left. Enter HomeNetwork for SSID. Then select WPA2-PSK and enter PSK Pass Phrase as Student ID. AES is automatically chosen for Encryption. If not select AES from drop-down menu

B. Click the Web Browser icon in the Desktop tab. Enter the IPv4 address of the Registration Server in the URL box and then click Go

C. Because there is no IoT account created yet, one will need to be created. Click the Sign up now option

D. Select a username (your StudentID) and password (your StudentID) and then click Create to create the IoT account (it is a requirement that you use your StudentID for both username and password)

E. No devices show up the URL box as we have not set up an IoT Server - Devices window there are no IoT devices listed. This is because all the devices are still registered with the Home Gateway.

3. Set up Wireless Router at home

A. Select Config tab then Settings tab on the left. Set Display Name as StudentID Wireless Router

B. Select Wireless tab from left. Enter HomeNetwork for SSID. Then select WPA2-PSK and enter PSK Pass Phrase as Student ID. AES is automatically chosen for Encryption. If not select AES from menu

C. Follow 6.ii for all end devices (IoT) connected to the wireless router

4. Configure the Ceiling Fan to register with your Registration Server

A. Click the Ceiling Fan icon in the workspace to open the device configuration window

B. Click the I/O Config tab -> Network Adapter -> choose PT-IOT-NM-1W(This is a wireless network adapter)

C. Next Config tab

a. Select Wireless tab from left. Enter HomeNetwork for SSID. Then select WPA2-PSK and enter PSK Pass Phrase as Student ID. AES is automatically chosen for Encryption. If not select AES from drop-down menu (as in 6.ii)

b. Select a from the left, under the Config tab. Set Display Name as Smart Ceiling Fan. Set Gateway/DNS IPV4 to DHCP. Change the IoT Server type from Home Gateway to Remote Server. Enter the IP address of the StudentID_Name_IoT Registration Server and the created IoT account Username (Student ID) and Password (Student ID). Next, click the Connect button. Once connected you will see the Refresh button

D. Now do step 5.i, you should be able to see the ceiling fan listed under your URL once you log in with username StudentID and password StudentID

5. Configure the lamp in the same way as in step 7. Set up the display name as Smart Lamp

6. Configure the door in the same way as step 7. Set up the display name as Smart Door

7. Now click on the Tablet -> Web browser -> Type IP address of the StudentID_Name_IoT Registration Server. Log in with your Username and password as a set. You should be able to see the lamp and the door listed below.

A.Now change the fan setting from off to low

B. Change the door setting to lock

C. Set the lamp setting to dim

D. Go to each device and select the Attribute tab and take a screenshot

8. Add and Configure Temperature Monitor

9. Add and Configure Wind Detector

10. Add 2 more end devices for a smart home of your choice and configure

11. Now click on the Tablet -> Web browser -> Type IP address of the StudentID_Name_IoT Registration Server. Log in with your Username and password as a set. You should be able to see the Temperature Monitor and the Wind Detector listed below:

12. Change from Real Time to Simulation mode (you can use Shift + S if required)

A.Select Simple PDU

B. Select the source as Tablet and destination as Remote Server

C. Select Auto Capture/Play under Play Controls

D. Watch the Simulation Panel

E. Note the Type (ICMP/IoT TCP/TCP/HTTP....)

F. Click on Info (for 2 or 3 types) next to Type (the Info might be in different colours when In Progress or failed and is green when Successful). Take a screenshot(s) of the OSI layers functionality for 2 to 3 Info. Take screenshot(s) of Inbound /Outbound PDU details for 2 to 3 info

G. Press the Delete button to remove the PDU from the network

H. Exit Simulation mode to go into Real-time mode

13. Change from Logical view to Physical view

A. Select Environments for Home City and select View/Edit

B. Select KeyFrame Graph, note the Ambient Temperature and take a screenshot

C. Move the Ambient Temperature from current temperature on the graph and take a screenshot

D. Switch back to Logical view

14. Go to the Tablet and Enter the URL as before and note all the devices and their properties

15. Embed the StudentID_Firstname_ITC560.pkt as an object and display as an icon in the Word document

16. For each step (from Step 4 onwards) screenshots should be taken and included in your Word document

The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the UN Secretariat department responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA also ensures that there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort. OCHA ReliefWeb aims to provide reliable disaster and crisis updates and analysis to humanitarians by: collecting information from more than 4,000 global information sources around the clock; delivering content which is most relevant to ReliefWeb's global audience, includes country and disaster reports, maps, info-graphics, job announcements and learning opportunities thereby; enabling humanitarian partners to analyze context and situations and make better decisions. This internship will be situated within OCHA ReliefWeb office based in Bangkok, Thailand, and the intern will be under the general guidance of the Editorial Assistant with a directing reporting line to the Head of ReliefWeb office. Responsibilities

In general, the intern will support OCHA in fulfilling its mission to coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention; and facilitate sustainable solutions. Education

To qualify for an internship with the UN Internship programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: -Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or -Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or -Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation from an academic programme. Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional working experience for participation in the Programme though any academic and/or practical experience in humanitarian affairs issues including humanitarian coordination, humanitarian financing mechanisms, humanitarian funding trends, gender equality programming, is an asset. Research interest and published work on these or/and any related areas is desirable. Mortgages, Insurances and Regulations on Modular Homes. We all want to own a property, something to call our home or as an investment opportunity. I have had a lot of people ask about how do you go about building and financing a modular home. Today's article is about how to finance your modular home and what options are available to you. I will be exploring the building regulations and planning permissions and who the overall regulatory bodies are. When getting your modular property built, it is important to understand what options are available to you, what finance you can have, what will this cover, and what type of insurance you will need and who can provide this. It is a lot less complicated to find finance for your build then you may think and many of the high street banks and other lenders now also offer mortgages for self-build properties including modular homes. This is inclusive of Halifax and Lloyds Bank. This is not the only option, there are others such as Self-Finance, this is of course the best option as it enables you to buy the property as freehold. This means you will not have to get a mortgage but with the current economic climate it is unlikely that lots of people have a large sum of money that can be used to invest in the build. Another option is called a construction loan, and this can be taken out through your bank and will provide you with staggered payments, paid directly to your vendors after each stage of the build is completed. There are seven parts to financing your home under a construction loan and then mortgage. The first stage is pre-qualify which will enable you to see what figure the provider is willing to lend you. This will form a guide on your overall lending power. This does not guarantee you the figure you are provided with but will form a good basis. The second stage is the applying stage. This is where you will apply for your finance, in this case mortgage. This will be formed through many ways including an in-depth analysis of your personal finance, your history and other loans you have taken out and the overall way you handle repayments on these loans. It will take your chosen lender some time to verify all the information you have provided so it is better to go with a supplier that has a pre-understanding of modular builds as this will speed up the whole process. If the bank has been able to verify your answers and are satisfied with the status of your application, you will move onto the next stage which is your mortgage approval. This will contain a letter of commitment from your lending provider stating the amount they are lending. This letter may also discuss any restrictions and contingencies or conditions, meaning there could be limitations to your build or to the way it is placed and so forth. You will have to agree to these and sign an honour clause prior to any manufacturing. With this letter you will also receive a request to provide the plans as well as a document to show who is the main contractor and how much they quote the total labour cost to be. You need to ensure that you have the deeds for your build. Once you have all this in place you will need to create a plan in writing about how and when you will pay your vendors. This is known as the disbursement schedule. These payments will represent each part of the process, such as building of the foundation and the exterior but also the clearing of the land and the delivery of the module to the land. Each part of the building process must be allocated and accounted for in the budget as payments are made for each part that is completed. You will also need to have these individual stages verified by a regulatory body, only once verified will release the payment to your vendors. Once all the regulations and conditions have been satisfied and the different parts have been completed and paid you will be at the final stage prior to the manufacturing of your home the mortgage closing stage. This is where your loan will be classed as closed or settled and you will pay anywhere from 3-7% to cover the fees such as solicitor’s costs. You will have more fees to pay when you change your loan from a construction loan to a mortgage. Now you are at the stage where you can begin instructing the building of your home and payments will be made to your vendor for each milestone that is achieved and then verified, and this is the first time where you will be making payments to your bank to cover the mortgage based on how much money has been disbursed. This does mean that your payments will increase dramatically as most modular builds can take 2 months to be completed ready to deliver to site and each module will have to be paid for on delivery, meaning you could be paying out a large sum. The final stage is the transfer of your loan to a permanent mortgage. This will mean that your home needs to be appraised, to ensure that the value placed on it is correct and that all the work has been completed and is of satisfactory quality. This stage will mean you will incur transfer fees. If you are not interested in a construction loan, then you can look to get either a fixed rate or capital repayment mortgage. The fixed rate mortgage is the safest option as it ensures that your rate stays the same even with rising interest rates. When approaching a high street lender, it is important to explain about the materials that will be used to build your modular home and try to go to a bank or provider that understands the difference in the construction and has a programme running about alternative construction such as Halifax who offer a mortgage specifically for self-build properties and much like the construction loan and mortgage option as explained above they usually release the mortgage loan in five instalments and you have to show a completion certificate and the property must be valued by their surveyor. They also require you to complete the build within two years of them first releasing the funds. Prior to getting a mortgage, it is important that you are aware of and understand the importance of the industry guidelines, building regulations, planning permission and the regulatory bodies and how these have an effect. There are 5 important industry guidelines that have an influence in a modular building project. Building regulations are put in place to ensure that all work is carried out, using strict guidelines to ensure that the project runs smoothly and there are no risks. Before any building can commence the contractors must show their plans to the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to be approved. This is inclusive of the time frame involved, the overall layout and appearance and its size. It is important to be aware of the difference between building regulations which set the overall standards for the construction and design of the build and planning permission which you will need to get which considers the way the building will look and any bearing the building will have on the local area. The DCLG set the national framework on policy for building regulations in the UK, there are others in different countries, but this article will focus on the UK regulations. Building regulations are a set of industry standards that guarantee that buildings are manufactured to an approved standard and take into consideration elements such as the fire safety, the energy use and naturally the structure of the build. There is a one organisation that sets the standard for building control, regulatory compliance and overall technical guidance and that is the NHBC. They are the leading providers in home warranty, insurance and standard setter for UK homes. They cover about 80% of new homes and 1.6 million homes altogether. They offer support on solicitors and anything legal, have a pre-approved list of affordable housing providers and builders and manufacturers. The overall organisation and regulator of modular builds is The Build offsite Property Assurance Scheme (BOPAS). This is a scheme that exists to provide assurance to banks and other financers that modular construction projects will be viable to be sold on and be so for a minimum of 60 years. It is a stamp of approval that is well recognised throughout the construction industry. The scheme has been developed by Build offsite, The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Lloyd's Register and BLP, in partnership with the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) and the Building Societies Association (BSA). BOPA provides complete assurances that all the expected standards are met, and that with any other situation there has been a thorough risk assessment made. It also allows for the reliance that the overall process, including the delivery of your modular home is a regulated and secure one. BOPAS also provide a list relevant people and companies to use involved in modular building sector and provide assurances that these people are accredited and safe to use. There are vast benefits to using an BOPAS approved supplier. The first is that it offers assurances that the overall process will be or has been completed and meets all rules on best practice. It also gives assurances that the overall working structure is understood and that each person who is involved on the construction can work together with a common framework and the final advantage is that BOPA’s also supply assurances that any risks have been acknowledged, analysed and accounted for. As you can see there is a lot to think about when looking at getting a modular home, but this is not very different from the process of financing and getting permission to build or buy any other home. There are extensive regulations in place and governing body that will ensure that your dream home is turned into a reality. United Nations Calls for Worldwide Treaty to Phase Out Pesticides and Transition to Sustainable Farming Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola In a 2013 survey, 71 percent of Americans expressed a concern over the number of chemicals and pesticides in their food supply.1 And no wonder — research has linked long-term pesticide exposure to infertility,2 birth defects,3,4 endocrine disruption5 and obesity, reduced IQ,6 neurological diseases7 and cancer.8 It is only a common-sense conclusion that reducing your pesticide exposure would result in improved health. The amount of pesticides used both commercially and in residential areas has grown immensely since 1945. More than 1 billion pounds are used each year in the U.S. alone. Worldwide, an estimated 7.7 billion pounds of pesticides are applied to crops each year, and that number is steadily increasing.9 According to a 2012 analysis,10 each 1 percent increase in crop yield is associated with a 1.8 percent increase in pesticide use. Logic tells us this is an unsustainable trajectory when you consider the health and environmental ramifications associated with pesticide use and exposure. As just one example, studies done by the Chinese government show that 20 percent of arable land in China is now unusable due to pesticide contamination!11 Every now and then, though, a ray of hope descends. Earlier this month, two United Nations (UN) experts called for a comprehensive global treaty to not only regulate but actually phase out toxic pesticides in farming, and to move food production across the world toward more sustainable agricultural practices. This is a significant change in stance that can — and hopefully will — have far-reaching consequences. UN Calls for Global Treaty to Promote Sustainable Farming Without Toxic Pesticides The two experts, Hilal Elver, the UN’s special rapporteur on the right to food and Baskut Tuncak, the special rapporteur on toxics, shared research with the Human Rights Council in Geneva showing pesticides are responsible for 200,000 acute poisoning deaths each year. Chronic exposure has been linked to cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, hormone disruption, developmental disorders and sterility. As reported by Sustainable Pulse:12 “The experts particularly emphasized the obligation of States to protect the rights of children from hazardous pesticides … The experts warn that certain pesticides can persist in the environment for decades and pose a threat to the entire ecological system on which food production depends … The experts say the use of neonicotinoid pesticides is particularly worrying because they are accused of being responsible for a systematic collapse in the number of bees around the world. Such a collapse, they say, threatens the very basis of agriculture as 71 percent of crop species are bee-pollinated. While acknowledging that certain international treaties currently offer protection from the use of a few pesticides, they stressed that a global treaty to regulate the vast majority of them throughout their life cycle does not yet exist, leaving a critical gap in the human rights protection framework.” The special rapporteurs challenged the pesticide industry’s “systematic denial of harms” and “aggressive, unethical marketing tactics,” noting the industry is spending massive amounts of money to influence policymakers and contest scientific evidence showing their products do in fact cause great harm to human and environmental health. Toxic Pesticides Are Not an Irreplaceable Farming Necessity Even more importantly, their report firmly denies the idea that pesticides are essential to ensure sufficient amounts of food for a growing world population, calling the notion “a myth.”13 Not only have decades of heavy pesticide use failed to eliminate global hunger, they said, the same chemicals have now become a troubling food contaminant — contaminants made all the worse by the fact that they cannot be washed off like many older generation pesticides could. According to Elver and Tuncak:14 “The assertion promoted by the agrochemical industry that pesticides are necessary to achieve food security is not only inaccurate, but dangerously misleading. In principle, there is adequate food to feed the world; inequitable production and distribution systems present major blockages that prevent those in need from accessing it …” Moreover, the report highlighted developments in sustainable and regenerative farming, where biology can completely replace chemicals, delivering high yields of nutritious food without detriment to the environment. “It is time to overturn the myth that pesticides are necessary to feed the world and create a global process to transition toward safer and healthier food and agricultural production,” they said. Which Foods Are the Most Contaminated? According to the 2017 Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean 15” reports,15,16,17 which rank foods based on highest and lowest pesticide contamination, strawberries still top the list of foods most likely to contain the highest amounts of residues, containing a minimum of 20 pesticides — twice the amount of the second-most contaminated crop — while non-GMO sweet corn has the lowest amounts. EWG’s Dirty Dozen — Foods containing the highest amounts of pesticide residues and therefore best to purchase organic include: 1. Strawberries 2. Spinach 3. Nectarines 4. Apples 5. Peaches 6. Grapefruit European Parliament Report Highlights Benefits of Organic Foods Another favorable piece of news is the recently released report,18 “Human Health Implications of Organic Food and Organic Agriculture,” by the European Parliament, detailing the many benefits of organics. The report is unusually comprehensive in that it reviews a wide range of effects of organics, from nutritional content and the benefits of fewer pesticides to environmental impacts and sustainability. Its conclusions are based on hundreds of epidemiological and laboratory studies and food analyses. The clearest benefits of organics on human health were found to be related to lowered pesticide, antibiotic and cadmium exposure. As noted by Civil Eats:19 “Most striking in its findings is the evidence suggesting organic food can help protect children from the brain-altering effects of some pesticides. And while there is evidence of greater nutrient content in some organic food — particularly milk and meat — as health benefits, these differences appear to be less significant than organic food’s lack of hazardous chemicals … The report was prepared for a European audience, but its findings clearly apply to the U.S. ‘They did a really comprehensive job of a global literature search, so I don’t think anything in the report wouldn’t be applicable,’ said Boise State University assistant professor of community and environmental health Cynthia Curl, who researches links between diet and pesticide exposure … ‘As a consequence of reduced pesticide exposure, organic food consequently contributes to the avoidance of health effects and associated costs to society,’ write the authors, noting that research suggests these costs are currently ‘greatly underestimated.’” Consumer Rights Group Sues EPA Over FOIA Violations Although the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate — the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide — as a probable human carcinogen in 2015,20 the product has not been pulled from the market. Citing this finding and other research, more than 60 cancer patients are coordinating lawsuits against Monsanto. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), contradicted the IARC’s findings when it, in September, 2016, declared glyphosate “not likely to be carcinogenic” to humans21 — a determination that has been met with severe criticism and accusations of violating EPA guidelines22 and protecting Monsanto’s interests23 at the expense of public health. Now the consumer rights group, U.S. Right to Know (USRTK), has filed a federal lawsuit against the EPA for violating Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provisions. As reported by USRTK:24 “The lawsuit … seeks documents related to EPA’s assessment of … glyphosate … [USRTK] requested the EPA records after the EPA posted an internal memorandum titled “GLYPHOSATE: Report of the Cancer Assessment Review Committee” to the agency’s website on April 29, 2016. The internal EPA report, known as the CARC report, concluded that glyphosate was “not likely to be carcinogenic to humans.” The EPA then deleted the public posting on May 2, saying that the document was posted inadvertently. But before it was deleted Monsanto officials copied the document, promoted it on the company website and on social media and made reference to it in a court hearing dealing with lawsuits filed by agricultural workers and others who allege Monsanto’s herbicide gave them cancer. The May 12, 2016 FOIA request asked for certain records relating to the CARC report on glyphosate as well as records of communications between Monsanto and EPA officials that discussed glyphosate issues. Under FOIA, the EPA had 20 working days to respond to the request, but well over 190 working days have now passed and the EPA has yet to produce any records in response to the request …” Glyphosate — A Most Troublesome Toxin Glyphosate is most heavily applied on GE corn, soybeans and sugar beets, but it's also commonly used to desiccate conventional (non-GMO but non-organic) wheat and protect other conventional crops from weeds. Disturbingly, glyphosate and Roundup may actually be even worse than DDT, having been linked to an ever-growing array of health effects, including but not limited to:25,26 ✓ Nutritional deficiencies, especially minerals, as glyphosate immobilizes certain nutrients and alters the nutritional composition of the treated crop ✓ Disruption of the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids (these are essential amino acids not produced in your body that must be supplied via your diet) ✓ Increased toxin exposure (this includes high levels of glyphosate and formaldehyde in the food itself) ✓ Impairment of sulfate transport and sulfur metabolism; sulfate deficiency ✓ Systemic toxicity — a side effect of extreme disruption of microbial function throughout your body; beneficial microbes in particular, allowing for overgrowth of pathogens ✓ Gut dysbiosis (imbalances in gut bacteria, inflammation, leaky gut and food allergies such as gluten intolerance) ✓ Enhancement of damaging effects of other food-borne chemical residues and environmental toxins as a result of glyphosate shutting down the function of detoxifying enzymes ✓ Creation of ammonia (a byproduct created when certain microbes break down glyphosate), which can lead to brain inflammation associated with autism and Alzheimer's disease ✓ Increased antibiotic resistance by priming pathogens to more readily become resistant to antibiotics ✓ Increased cancer risk.27,28,29,30 Since the IARC’s determination, agricultural personnel have begun suing Monsanto over past glyphosate exposure, claiming it played a role in their bone cancer and leukemia31,32 The Many Drawbacks of Industrialized Agriculture The UN’s special report on pesticides and call for a transition toward sustainable agriculture worldwide adds ammunition to an already well-stocked munitions store against conventional agriculture and genetic engineering. I’ve detailed a wide range of drawbacks of chemical-dependent industrial farming in previous articles, including the following: Degrades and contaminates soil Grains account for about 70 percent of our daily calories, and grains are grown on about 70 percent of acreage worldwide. The continuous replanting of grain crops each year leads to soil degradation, as land is tilled and sprayed each year, disrupting the balance of microbes in the soil. Top soil is also lost each year, which means that, eventually, our current modes of operation simply will no longer work. Soil erosion and degradation rates suggest we have less than 60 remaining years of topsoil.33 Forty percent of the world's agricultural soil is now classified as either degraded or seriously degraded; the latter means that 70 percent of the topsoil is gone. Soil degradation is projected to cause 30 percent loss in food production over the next 20 to 50 years. Meanwhile, our global food demands are expected to increase by 50 percent over this span of time. As explained in Peter Byck’s short film, “One Hundred Thousand Beating Hearts,” farm animals form symbiotic relationships where one species helps keep parasites from overwhelming another. It is the separation of crops and animals into two distinctly different farming processes that has led to animal waste becoming a massive source of pollution rather than a valuable part of the ecological cycle. Contaminates water and drains aquifers Agriculture accounts for 70 percent of our fresh water use. When the soil is unfit, water is wasted. It simply washes right through the soil and past the plant's root system. We already have a global water shortage that's projected to worsen over the coming two or three decades, so this is the last thing we need to compound it. On top of that, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are a major water polluter, destroying what precious little water we do have. The EPA has noted that U.S. states with high congregations of CAFOs report 20 to 30 serious water quality problems each year.34 According to a report35 by Environment America, corporate agribusiness is “one of the biggest threats to America’s waterways.” Tyson Foods Inc. is among the worst, releasing 104.4 million pounds of toxic pollutants into waterways between 2010 and 2014; second only to a steel manufacturing company. Contributes to greenhouse gas emissions While fertilizer production produces its share of greenhouse gases, most of the emissions occur upon application. According to the International Panel on Climate Change, 1 out of every 100 kilos of nitrogen fertilizer applied to farm land ends up in the atmosphere as nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas (300 times more potent than CO2) known to deplete the ozone.36 In 2014, the amount of N2O created by nitrogen fertilizer spread on American farmland was equal to one-third of the N2O released by all cars and trucks in the U.S. More recent research suggests the real number is three to five times higher than that. Reduces biodiversity The efficiency model of large-scale industrialized agriculture demanded a reduction in diversity. Hence, we got monoculture: farmers growing all corn, or all soy, for example. Monoculture has significantly contributed to dietary changes that promote ill health. The primary crops grown on industrial farms today — corn, soy, wheat, canola and sugar beets — are the core ingredients in processed foods known to promote obesity, nutritional deficiencies and disease. According to a report by the Royal Botanic Gardens in the U.K., one-fifth of all plants worldwide are now threatened with extinction, primarily through the expansion of agriculture.37 Ethanol and corn sweetener subsidies have also led to farmers abandoning conservation measures designed to preserve fragile lands and protect biodiversity in the natural landscape.38 Worsens food safety and promotes pandemic disease Agricultural overuse of drugs, especially antibiotics, has led to the development of drug-resistant disease,39 which has now become a severe health threat. Pandemic outbreaks are also becoming more prevalent in CAFOs, revealing the inherent flaws of industrialized animal farming. In 2015, an avian flu outbreak spread across 14 states in five months. The year before that, a pig virus outbreak killed off 10 percent of the American pig population. As noted by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy:40 “The rapid spread of new disease strains ... is one very visible reason why the expansion of factory-style animal production is viewed as unsustainable.” Threatens food security by decimating important pollinators such as butterfly and bee populations.41 Promotes nutritional deficiencies and poor nutrition Industrial farming is set up and subsidized to grow ingredients used in processed foods. This is the cheapest way to feed the masses. However, what people really need more of in order to thrive is fresh produce. According to research42 presented at the 2016 American Heart Association's Epidemiology meeting, reducing the price of fruits and vegetables by 30 percent could save nearly 200,000 lives over 15 years by lowering rates of heart disease and stroke. If people added just one additional serving of fruits and vegetables a day, up to 3.5 million deaths from heart disease could be prevented in just two years. Testing also reveals nutrient content of foods has dramatically declined across the board since the introduction of mechanized farming in 1925. For example: To receive the same amount of iron you used to get from one apple in 1950, by 1998 you had to eat 26 apples; today you have to eat 36 Between 1950 and 1999, levels of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and vitamin C levels in 43 different vegetables and fruits significantly declined43 Analysis of nutrient data from 1975 to 1997 found that, on average, calcium levels in 12 fresh vegetables dropped 27 percent; iron levels dropped 37 percent; vitamin A levels dropped 21 percent; vitamin C levels declined by 30 percent Healthy soils contain a large diversity of microorganisms, and it is these organisms that are responsible for the plant’s nutrient uptake,44,45 health and the stability of the entire ecosystem. The wide-scale adoption of industrial farming practices has decimated soil microbes responsible for transferring these minerals to the plants. If we do not change, we will eventually reach a point of no return, where soils will be too depleted and microbially “dead” to grow food. Conventional may be more efficient, and may provide somewhat greater yields in some cases, but in the long term it’s unsustainable. Necessitates the use of toxins, poisons and harmful mechanical farming methods: Industrialization led to the separation of crops and livestock farming into two different specialties. That change alone has done tremendous harm, as livestock are actually a core component of regenerative agriculture. As a result, a whole host of land maintenance services that animals serve for free have had to be replaced with chemical and mechanical means — all of which have detrimental effects on human health and the environment. Is less profitable than organic farming and cannot affordably and sustainably increase production Research has even shown that conventional farming cannot significantly compete with organic in terms of profitability. At least 1,000 studies have compared organic and conventional farming in terms of productivity, environmental impact, economic viability and social wellbeing. One such study46,47 found that organic farms are more profitable,48,49 earning farmers anywhere from 22 to 35 percent more than their conventional counterparts. They also produce equally or more nutritious foods with fewer or no pesticide residues. Organic farms also use far less energy, were found to be at a distinct advantage during droughts, and provide unique benefits to the ecosystem, along with social benefits that are hard to put a price tag on. According to one of the authors: “If I had to put it in one sentence, organic agriculture has been able to provide jobs, be profitable, benefit the soil and environment and support social interactions between farmers and consumers. In some ways, there are practices in organic agriculture that really are ideal blueprints for us to look at feeding the world in the future. Organic may even be our best bet to help feed the world in an increasingly volatile climate.” Assures decimation of food production should feared climate changes turn into reality Recent research50,51 indeed confirms that conventional farming methods cannot protect us from a repeat of the devastating conditions experienced during the 1930s “dust bowl,” a time when consecutive droughts decimated food production in the U.S. According to simulations, if the U.S. were to experience the same kind of drought as in 1936, we’d lose 40 percent of our corn and soy, and 30 percent of our wheat. These losses are very similar to those back in 1936. But when including current climate change trends into their calculations, crop losses increase by 25 percent for each 1-degree increase in temperature. A 4-degree increase in average temperature would reduce crop yields by a staggering 80 percent over the course of a season. As noted by bioethicist George Divorsky:52 “Given recent predictions53 that parts of the U.S. could soon experience “megadroughts” lasting for as long as 35 years (yes, you read that correctly), these results should serve as a serious wakeup call.” Directly promotes ill health and chronic disease Health statistics suggest the average toxic burden has become too great for children and adults alike. More than half of all Americans are chronically ill, and toxins in our food appear to play a primary role. According to Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno,54 founding president of Bastyr University, toxins in the modern food supply are now “a major contributor to, and in some cases the cause of, virtually all chronic diseases.” A recent report55,56 by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.57 which represents OB-GYNs in 125 countries, warns that chemical exposures, including pesticides, now represent a major threat to human health and reproduction. Pesticides are also included in a new scientific statement on endocrine-disrupting chemicals by the Endocrine Society task force.58,59 This task force warns that the health effects of hormone-disrupting chemicals is such that everyone needs to take proactive steps to avoid them — especially those seeking to get pregnant, pregnant women, and young children. Even extremely low-level pesticide exposure has been found to considerably increase the risk of certain diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease. What Can You Do to Protect Your Family Against Pesticides? In order to reduce your exposure to toxic pesticides, you’d be wise to make some changes in your lifestyle choices. Here are just a few suggestions to help you get started. Eat organic foods. Look for organic produce and grassfed meats and dairy products. Investigate the farmers markets in your area and consider planting your own garden to supply produce through the summer months. Although buying organic foods may be slightly more expensive today, they help to reduce your overall health costs in your future. Go green in your lawn and garden care. You don’t have to give up a green lawn if you want to remove pesticides from your garden. However, it may take a season or two in order to get the growth you’re looking for. Talk with your school board about lawn care at your children’s school. Pesticides sprayed on the school lawn and play areas can increase your child’s exposure. You may be able to change how they care for the lawn when you educate the administration about the risks involved to the children. Play in a healthy environment. Before joining a golf club or playing frequently, talk with the course superintendent about the pesticides they use to control weeds and insects. Bring members together to request cleaner and safer lawn care. Talk to your city administrators about the care given to the lawn in your local parks. Educate them about the risks to adults, children and pets from pesticides.
