He was dating one of the well known and renowned singers in all of Junkertown.

I have several headcannons for the Overwatch Heroes, I’m going to share them

Moira is a coffee addict however caffeine can’t affect her, like it won’t wake her up or energize her it does nothing but if she goes without she experiences withdrawal. She has a side project where she’s trying to create a serum that will allow caffeine to actually affect her, unbeknownst to her however he colleagues both at Oasis and Talon have been sabotaging this project as they are terrified of what will happen if she can actually experience caffeine

Roadhog’s name was actually started before the Omnium explosion, a kid had given him a pig to stitch onto his shotgun holster and some of his friends called him Roadhog as a joke, it stopped being a joke after the explosion

Venture has a house that while they don’t often stay there long they do keep a collection that they started from their various jobs. Jars of dirt from each dig site they’ve ever worked at, with a flag for the country it’s from and a sticker with some information about the dig site. When they’re hunting down relic thieves they collect some dirt from each place they go on their search and adds it into a singular jar with some barriers but in to separate the different dirt from the rest alongside the usual things they put on the jars

Mauga is trained in how to be a bartender. He learned back during his days as a Raider to do undercover work on their targets, either for assassinations or information gathering. He still makes plenty of drinks for Talon and he does hope to share a drink with Baptiste again at some point, either when one of them is on death’s door or as friends again so he keeps a small bottle on his person of Bap’s favorite drink just in case

Genji occasionally forgets to take his mask off when drinking or eating, not because he’s embarrassed about his face but because at times it feels like his mask is actually his face. Zenyatta has been trying to help him with this, with more difficulty than expected

Zenyatta actually had several jobs before the crisis happened, so many that not even Ramattra knows all of them. He uses this knowledge to mess with people a lot but it also makes him a jack of all trades so he helps out with a lot of things around Shambali with a lot of things

Before Zarya joined the military she had several flavors for protein shakes that she loved to have, however after she joined she has stuck with unflavored mixed into water so that it’s quick to make and take before and after her battles. She hates the lack of flavor so much that she intends to expand her pallet of flavors once she is done fighting so she can forget the unflavored

Dr Winston (the human) got Hammond into contact with an engineering friend on Earth in an effort to at least lessen the amount of time the hamster escaped a day. This friend didn’t know about the cruelty the Horizon Test Subjects faced and Hammond could see that. The friend helped Hammond develop the first version of his hamster to human translator be showing the blueprints of past translators and shared all sorts of ideas with him on things to make. Before he met the Junkers Hammond only liked this one human, and he hopes to meet her someday, if nothing but to at least tell her he’s okay. Until then he busies himself with crossing off ideas on the list they made together, and making sure each one works

Mei had friends she would talk to from other ecopoints, she hopes to get back in contact with them at some point and catch up but with the program having been shut down for a long time she hasn’t had much luck in that endeavor

queer people have been synonymous with dressing loud and garish and ugly for centuries at this point. its practically a form of communication for us, and its something that we have to continue to embrace to avoid being sanitized as a whole by society bc thats a fate worse than death if you ask me. and sloan "dirt-fucker" cameron is not someone who goes well with the word "sanitized".

its entirely and incredibly in character actually. they geek out at the very mention of anything historical. their default fit is a jacket thats like three sizes too big for them. they have a pet rock with a purple mohawk. they were associated with nothing but rock eating for like six months. they eat ice cream for dinner and call people "doofus". you're telling me someone like that wouldnt voluntarily choose to dress in the goofiest shit you can think when their whole shit is being a goofball?

they've lived in probably at least half a dozen small towns in the province of nova scotia (they are not from the city bc city kids don't grow up playing in the dirt), meaning i can say with every ounce of personal experience that 90% of their shit is thrifted and they consider something "nice" if its cheap and isnt covered in stains when they pull it off the rack. they'd wear a flannel over a hoodie on a windy day and 10 degrees celsius is t-shirt weather. they dont care about how they dress day-to-day bc nobody else they know does either, and that can translate to both casuality and confidence in flawless fashion.

"ugly" isn't an option we should be immediately disparaging of anyways. there is no separating "good" ugly from "bad" ugly in design, as any form of ugly can be made good looking despite what the adjective's conotations might have you believe. you look at the roadhog skin in the s13 battle pass and tell me its not so ugly that it wraps back around into being adorable. ugly should be approached with an open mind rather than being shunned bc its not what you wanted

My (hopefully) last complaint about Junkertown and the Junkers before my inevitable Re-write post

Junkers vs. MAD MAX

Alright I'm already on a roll with this and I've already committed myself to doing a rewrite of Junkertown and the Junkers, but I have one more thing to complain. That being the fact that they butcher the media they are referencing, that being Mad Max. For more context this is also coming form an Australian who has never watched these movies, this doesn't mean I didn't do my research, this is just to give context that I myself have never seen these movies.

If you don't know Mad Max is very much Australian media, written by, acted by, and taking place in Australia. Not only that but it very much relies on the world building of the fact that one, Australia is very isolated, and two, the rest of the world is like this. Something that Overwatch fails egregiously off the bat with considering that the rest of the world is not an apocalyptic wasteland and the fact that the thing that caused Junkertown and the radiation was an Omnium. You know, the thing that multiple countries had? There's also the fact that Junkrat and Roadhog are international criminals, how big Austraila is and the travel time between areas are never considered, it's exceedingly easy to leave the damn country (Junkrat and Roadhog again but also Hammond in his new short story). They want to be a Mad Max reference without actually considering the fact that the isolation inherent to Australia is important to Mad Max's setting.

There's also the fact that Mad Max relies heavily on visual story telling, Mad Max: Fury Road not even having a screenplay, it was fully laid out on storyboards. There's also the fact that Mad Max was not about the Australian experience but rather the human experience, this isn't a problem until you realize that every other characters references are very much biased off that characters origin. That or their place of origin is considered when writing them even if the reference for said character isn't from that country.

Another thing is that Mad Max communicates the brutality and disfunction of humanity, society has collapsed and we are left with the worst of it. The theming and messaging does not work with the rest of Overwatch's theming, it also doesn't make sense in universe considering that Overwatch was one, very environment focused, and two, was already sending forces to Australia to help with the consequences of radiation. Why did they let the Wasteland and Junkertown get so bad? Especially in the early Golden Age, and you can't say that it was because of the Junkers cause Overwatch have handled worse. Even before that point. We also have better examples of "the worst of humanity trope" with Talon, and they actually fit the story and world.

The theme they also completely miss in the soulless copy that is the Junkers is the individual connections and the theming or regaining humanity after great tragedy. In all honesty the best way they could have done this would have been to make Howl's rule itself the Mad Max Reference while Odessa's rule was the healing process from that, but no, they made her an overtaxing dictator instead. The gave the Junkers storyline the theme of desperation but no theme of hope, leaving it empty.

The only thing they unintentionally get right is that your environment doesn't necessarily change you, you do. Yes, a change of environment can assist in giving you space to make that change, but you are you no matter where you go. Junkrat and Roadhog don't change cause their out of Junkertown, they stay the exact same. Which is unfortunate because this is just due to them lacking any real depth in canon, an no, Junkrat actually being incredibly smart isn't character depth.

Back to the whole human connection thing, tell me, outside of fanon interpretation, out side of Junkrat's unreliable narration, outside of the interaction with characters he hasn't met in canon yet. Does anyone like Junkrat? Roadhog is there because Junkrat is paying him and because he seems board, the rest of Junkertown hates him, JQ especially. Roadhog doesn't seem to care about anyone, Junkerqueen's only true connection we see is with Hammond, and Hammond contiues to be my favoutite Junker by literally negating all the complaints about Junkertown I've had so far.

Honestly when I started looking at Junkertown lore I did not expect to be coming out saying that the fucking hamster was the best written character but here we are.

This is all also only referencing Mad Max: Fury Road by the way, which is probably what Junker Town is based off of considering its popularity and the time of release compared to Overwatch's. Honestly I might re-do this analysis/complaint if I ever watch the Mad Max series myself. Though I don't think my feelings will change of this, and that is the Junkers are an insult of a reference to MAD MAX. An empty copy at best. Reading through the Heroes Ascension Book, and here’s the stuff I found that seemed like set up for future, likely sidelined story content :/

But there are also hints for stuff that could show up in the main blame through interactions and some possible new characters.

Rebuilding Ruins: Symmetra/Lifeweaver Story

• ⁠Lifeweaver is living at the Atlantic Arcology, which comes under attack by Null Sector, which could have been a major problem due to their “guests”.

• ⁠Symmetra is working against negative influences inside Vishkar, but how far that will get her is up in the air and Lifeweaver invites her to join him at the Arcology as a member of the “Collective”, an altruistic group of scientists and intellectuals.

Unity: Orisa/Efi Story

• ⁠Numbani comes under assault by Null Sector, with Humans defending their Omnic neighbors much more openly than other places.

• ⁠Efi creates a bunch of small drones to help defend Numbani, so that Orisa and her can leave Numbani to help people.

• ⁠Story ends with the pair planning on setting out immediately, and takes place around the same time as the Rio Mission, Efi may be seeking out Overwatch.

Luck of the Draw: Ashe Story

• ⁠Ashe and the Deadlocks were attempting to break into the Las Vegas criminal underground.

• ⁠Ashe nearly died defending BOB, who in turn is almost taken captive by Null Sector.

• ⁠It confirmed damaging or removing the “helmets” on an Omnic causes them to have a “seizure” and die. (What the fuck Rammatra?)

A Friendly Rivalry: Junkers Story.

• ⁠Junker Queen almost had Roadhog and Junkrat executed.

• ⁠Junkrat reveals his secret treasure: A giant airship stored within the last remnants of the Omnium beneath Junkertown. Queen and Hammond begin making plans to get it airborne again.

Thoughtless Gods: Hammond Story (And boy these is a lot of worldbuilding in this one)

• ⁠Direct sequel to the previous story.

• ⁠Reveals that Omnics remaining in the Outback are oddly feral and corrupted in some fashion, cannibalizing each other for parts and actively “hunting” Junkers. Hammond has no idea what caused this.

• ⁠Hammond remembers his time being experimented on the Moon Colony, he is apparently “older” than Winston has he gained awareness before hand, and sort of became a “big brother” to Winston.

• ⁠The apes and Hammond were not the first experiments. There were failures, apparently some other kind of animals, that are still up on the Moonbase. Hammond calls them “wrong”.

• ⁠The apes have a whole society, are building weapons and armor and may be constructing a whole new building/device on the Colony.

• ⁠Possible hints at the Mars Colony.

• ⁠Two apes are named. Oscar, unknown, and Dyson, a large, cruel Orangutan - feels like a character set up.

Where Honor Lives: Hanzo/Kiriko Story

• ⁠Shimada weaponry have “special energy tech”, throws more confusion on the “is this magic” question surrounding the Japanese characters abilities. The Hashimoto are attempting to copy the designs but “they can’t manifest the proper power”. (This seems to be due to Kiriko’s father purposefully give them shoddy work but they don’t know that).

• ⁠The Hashimoto can work with impunity in Tokyo, and are causing trouble even with Null Sector literally on the horizon.

• ⁠Hanzo and Kiriko’s interactions again confuse the whole age gap, because he treats her as if she was a tween when he was a teen.

• ⁠Hanzo joins Kiriko in protecting Kanezaka from the invasion.

Lost Ghosts: Soldier/Ana Story

• ⁠Ana splits from Jack after learning he’s been sitting on the list of Overwatch agent names using it to track Talon movements and not warning the targets. She isn’t joining Overwatch but is going to be trying to protect remaining Agents who haven’t answered the Recall but are not yet dead to Talon.

• ⁠We meet another old Overwatch agent Mirembe, who is thinking about answering the Recall, I think she’s the woman that was standing in the group photo from Ana’s trailer.

• ⁠Another, Kimiko, is named.

Lucky Man: Soldier/Sombra Story

• ⁠Sombra has been leaking info to Soldier, because she believes the cabal she is after is also to blame for that happened in Zurich.

• ⁠Jack has been hunting Talon as a proxy because he never truly believed they took down the HQ. He also doesn’t believe Reyes knew what was going to happen.

• ⁠Sombra and Jack seem to be set up to continue working together, and Jack is headed to Oasis hunting for more clues on the Cabal.

Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?

Roadhog is very quiet but certainly speaks through actions. He's a ruthless criminal but has quite the soft spot for you. Roadhog would be intense both due to what he does to others around you and how he shows affection.

He smothers you in affection and acts as a bodyguard. No one comes near you when a hulking man like him is around. He loves you... but how he shows it is rough.

He's primarily a silent yandere who struggles with affection, yet he certainly tries to show you it.

Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

Roadhog can get messy. He's actually been known to be ruthless towards those who cross him. If anyone tried to steal you from him... they're met with a seething Roadhog.

Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?

Roadhog isn't the best with care. When he takes you in he keeps you in his home. Traps, given to him by Junkrat and also made by himself, litter the exits. You're given your own room and probably a Pachimari or two for comfort.

Roadhog would not mock you. If he's taken you in because he cares for you then he isn't intentionally going to hurt you. You have to mean a lot to him if he's managed to abduct you like this. He wouldn't bother otherwise.

Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?

Yes but he tries to listen to you. He may look like a monster... but he tries to have you not see him like that.

Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

Roadhog isn't very open with his feelings. For the most part you can't read him. He doesn't show vulnerabilities or much of his heart. Yet things seep through when he offers you plush toys he enjoys or holds you close.

Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Roadhog doesn't entirely care. Any attempt to hurt him doesn't hurt him and he can easily control the issue. So you can try, he won't care.

Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

No and while he finds your attempts amusing at first... he finds it irritating.

Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

The abduction or getting stuck in one of the traps set up.

He's terrifying during abduction as he's a large man with a gas mask. Of course you'll be terrified, especially if you haven't met him. Next thing you know you're in an unfamiliar home with him standing over you.

The next worst scenario is if you tried to escape and got your leg stuck in a trap. You're then forced to watch Roadhog enter the room to pull you out. He takes care of you afterwards... it's punishment enough that you got caught.

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

Roadhog isn't sure. He probably wants some sort of domestic relationship with you. However... he feels locking you away will keep you safe.

It doesn't.

Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

Roadhog may get jealous but you'll never be able to read him. He could be watching you speak to someone and cope. That or if the person talking to you flirts... he'll wait for you to leave before approaching that person.

If they aren't careful... they may just be red paste.

Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?

If you two are close then he stays close by and acts like a bodyguard. Even if you aren't he plays a similar role from a distance. He's mostly silent but occasionally speaks to you in a deep tone.

He may be affectionate with side hugs and praise. He also likes the idea of spoiling you. Although... if you are "in his case" in his home, he'll be much more affectionate with hugs and nuzzling his mask into you.

Maybe he'll kiss you but that's rare.

Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?

As stated above, he'd either watch you from a distance or appear extremely overprotective by being close to you. Then as time goes on he gets more protective/possessive... right up until he takes you away.

Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

Hard to tell when it comes to him. He already has a bad reputation... so?

Naughty: How would they punish their darling?

He probably doesn't punish you. If you try to escape then you might just find a trap. Your attempts to escape are punishment enough... when you're brought right back to where you were after failing then your morale quickly drops.

Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?

Before abduction, not many. After? Most of them.

Patience: How patient are they with their darling?

Surprisingly very patient.

Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

He'd have a hard time moving on. He might try to bottle how he feels about it if you died.

Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?

No and no.

Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?

Not sure, probably his nature and past.

Tears: How do they feel about seeing their darling scream, cry, and/or isolate themselves?

Roadhog would give you your space. If you want comfort, he'll offer it. If you don't, he'll leave you be.

He's more like a silent protector.

(Y/N) had to continuously keep pinching the flesh upon his arms to make sure that this indeed was now his reality, and not just some bizarre lucid dream that he was currently experiencing. It had begun with him assisting the legendary Reinhardt and some of his companions in destroying the command ship that was wreaking havoc to the city of Gothenburg. Now here he was as one of the handful of recruits for the secondary formation of Overwatch, being given a tour of the newest headquarters located within Malevento, Italy. It was an amazing experience so far! Getting to meet various former heroes such as Cassidy and Sojourn, and then newer members such as Lucio and D.Va. (Y/N) couldn’t wait to begin the trainings and then be able to go on missions, to begin coming up with concepts of his own costume, to be able to- 

‘Uh, (Y/N)?’ 

Oh, yeah. 

Turns out that it wasn’t all how (Y/N) had believed how things were going to go. 

‘You doing alright down there, luv? You’ve been quiet for these last couple of minutes?’ 

While it was quite obvious to him that he wasn’t going to be instantly thrown in missions that were dangerous or would end up in extreme circumstances, this was definitely not what (Y/N) was thinking when he was recruited for Overwatch. Instead of being sent on basic covert missions to help address future locations that the Null Sector would attempt to strike at next, it turns out that the former members of the Overwatch crew had decided that the perfect position for (Y/N) would be to venture out and go recruit other members of interest to increase their numbers. 

Yeah, you heard that right. 

(Y/N) (L/N), newest recruiter for Overwatch.

‘Uh, yeah.. Doin’ fine, Le- I, uh, mean.. Tracer.. Yeah, just finally getting around to the last person that’s on the list for this area that some of the others are interested in recruiting. 

“Let’s see, where we’re at on this damn thing..”

Mako Rutledge.. “Roadhog”.. 

Jamison Fawkes.. “Junkrat”.. 

Ah, there we are! Odessa “Dez” Stone.. Junker Queen..

‘Wait, Tracer? This.. wasteland.. Actually has a Queen? Like they have literal lines of royalty out in this dump?’ (Y/N) questions the woman over his comms, eyebrows furrowing slightly as he proceeds to reread the name and the context following a couple of times just to make sure that what he was seeing was actually correct. There’s absolutely no way that a place as.. chaotic and savage.. would have any sort of royalty, let alone the capacity to really understand how royalty and their systems work. At least there couldn’t be, right? 

‘It’s not what you would think when thinking of the term ‘royalty’, such how royalty is within other places. For example, the United Kingdom, where I’m from. Within Junkertown, the term royalty follows more- Well, it’s a bit complicated to explain. Let’s get this process done quickly so we can get you out of there before the locals start getting riled up with an outsider being in their presence.’ 

Tracer was definitely right, and (Y/N) couldn’t agree with her anymore than he already did. The faster that he could get this recruitment process done and over with, that’s if this “Junker Queen” agreed to be recruited, then the better that this whole situation would be. He could only hope that it wouldn’t be as hectic as dealing with that “Roadhog” and “Junkrat” duo. 

It’s not like there was a possibility that this trip could become even weirder than it already has been.

..Right? 

“Hold on,” Apparently there was a bodyguard that (Y/N) had to address his intentions to, and apparently be deemed worthy by the bodyguard, before being able to approach the Junker Queen. “So, you’re telling me that you’re the Queen’s bodyguard?” 

A hamster.

A hamster that’s in a mechanical ball, that speaks apparently, is the Queen’s bodyguard. 

“Affirmative.” 

It’s then that there’s a somewhat awkward moment of silence, moreso from (Y/N)’s side than the hamster that has informed the man to address him as ���Hammond”, as they stand there and just stare at each other. (Y/N) then proceeds to hold out the list of individuals for recruitment. “Uh, so I’m (Y/N), one of the newer members and now the recruiter for Overwatch, or at least this reformation of it, and your.. Queen.. happens to be upon the list.. So, would I be able to meet her? To discuss the possibility that she might be interested in joining?” He could only think about what Tracer’s thoughts might possibly be as she was also watching through the cameras that were located within the hall that Winston had managed to infiltrate, and ultimately (Y/N) wouldn’t be surprised if she was to tell him that his next task was to attempt to recruit the damn hamster as well. 

“Right this way.” 

There’s something similar to an eerie silence that begins to overcome the environment as (Y/N) proceeds to follow Hammond down the hallway to where apparently the Queen’s throne was located, or at least what (Y/N) would hope to be the Queen’s throne and not some crazy death trap. Just a quick turn around to look behind him to ease the slight paranoia that had begun to work its way within the depths of his mind, but (Y/N) turns back around to find out that he’s apparently lost sight of Hammond. ..Somehow.. But at this point it doesn’t necessarily matter. Back to the original purpose of being here, recruiting the Queen. 

“Uh, hello?” He calls out into the open, the sound of his voice echoing off the metal walls, but not being met with any response whatsoever. Just the creaking and groaning of machinery within the background. “Hello?” (Y/N) calls out once again for safe measure, for maybe he wasn’t heard in the first place- “What the hell?!” A slight shriek leaves past his lips as there’s a sudden blur that whips past his face, the breeze from the encounter causing his hair to become disheveled. He doesn’t necessarily get even a moment to process and figure out what the thing was that had flown past him and imbedded itself into the wall behind him - object, person, whatever it happens to be, before he’s having to quickly throw himself back to avoid having his face sliced off from the ax that has seemed to materialize out of thin air and just inches away from his face. “H-Holy shit!” 

‘(Y/N)! Look out!-’ 

Tracer’s voice, a panicked tone, could be heard through the comms not even a moment later, but it was already too late at that point to give a proper reaction, as (Y/N) could only focus on the brief pain that surged from what seemed to be the thick heel of a boot colliding with his chest, and then pain surging through him once again as his back collides harshly with the floor beneath him. 

Was this the end for him? 

How his life long dreams were now going to be short lived memories?

Yet, what he wasn’t expecting was to feel an immense pressure upon his face and practically be tasting a mixture of dirt and rubber. Moving his face proves to be fruitless as the pressure on his face increases. 

‘(Y/N)?! (Y/N)?! Are you okay?!’ 

“Oh, doing fine!-”

There wasn’t any doubt that she was definitely something of a taller woman. While she didn’t necessarily need those couple inches of wedge upon her boots to give her that extra height, it was definitely a mixture of not only intimidating but also attractive as well. (Y/N) couldn’t necessarily care about height, but that was more his personal preference. The various variants of blue within her hair, despite that he could see the brown color peeking out within her roots, yet it’s quite an eye-catcher as while typically the colors would contrast within the red of her eyes, yet, it just made her all that more beautiful. Don’t get (Y/N) started on the articles of her appearance either. From the metal studs that were embedded into the fabric of her clothing to the faded makeup to her eyes. It just enhanced it all. Tied everything together like it was a bow on a present. 

God, she was just absolutely beautiful. 

‘Are you sure that “doing fine” is the correct choice of words? You’re literally being crushed by the Junker Queen, (Y/N)!’

There’s some soft, muffled chuckle that makes way past (Y/N)’s lips at Tracer’s words, watching as Odessa proceeds to lean down to get a better glance of the man beneath her foot while a slight sneer begins to make its way to her own lips. “Well, Tracer, she’s kinda fine, if you happen to get what I mean~” He goes to lift his arm which briefly catches Odessa’s attention, slightly waving the clipboard that he somehow, miraculously still held onto. 

“So, gorgeous~ How about we get started on discussing you joining Overwatch?~”

would you mind shedding more light in the Wrecking Ball story? What you told us when I suggested space ranger could be evil has me very intrigued.

Ok so first up you do kinda need to read the Junkrat and Roadhog story to understand parts of the story I'm about to talk about cause this story is a direct follow up. Luckily that story is actively on the Overwatch Media page.

Ok now let's get into this story;

Starts off with JQ, Hammond, Meri and a bunch of other un-named Junkers are looking for parts to fix an aircraft. They don't find the part they're looking for and during the search they discover news footage of Null Sectors Attack, including footage of Null Sector attack Lijiang Towers. After finding nothing, Hammond goes to Lijiang Towers to get the part they need.

During this visit Hammond reminises about his time at the Lunar Horizon Colony. It's revealed that he was the only one in his family that the genetic experimentation worked and he always wondered why his family never joined him.

The scientist also used to place bet on him and presumably the other experiments.

After awhile of mistreatment Hammond escaped into the vents and while exploring them he wound up in Winston's room and they became friends after Hammond tried to comfort him.

Hammond isn't actually mad at Winston for taking him rocket idea and leaving him, at least not anymore, and the reason Hammond didn't try and reach out is because of Winston's new friends (Overwatch).

Like I mentioned in the Space ranger post we also meet the women who headed the project, who as I also stated, is a bitch.

Basically her and Hammond have a conversation and after that she tries to capture him, basically saying that "Winston may have escaped but you won't as your not legally a person".

It's also revealed that the other experiments are still alive on the moon, they were being watched by Horizon and before Hammond left he warned them that they were being watched.

This story honestly changed my view on Hammond, changing him from a character I couldn't care less about to one of my favorited characters. Also his and JQ's dynamic is so fun, they are total besties and I love them.

Playing the Hero vs Playing the Role

Something I've noticed in the stretch of conversations that pop up around 6v6 / 5v5 (Overwatch 1 vs. Overwatch 2) is the specific way folks (don't) talk about Tank.

Those players who enjoy(ed) it can get dismissed by large portions of the playerbase, because at some point it was decided that

No one wants to play the role

and you'd be forgiven for believing that? Because Queue times are almost always brought up. They were touted (developer's said as much) as the reason for why the game shifted to a 5v5 format for the sequel. Which...also kinda explains why the design and balance decisions feel a lot like throwing wet paper at a wall to see what sticks. Experimentation and all.

I'd argue though, that Tank, unlike the other Roles in the game, has not had very good decisions made at the design level. I would even go as far as to say, that, after the original cast, there has not been a well designed Tank released into either the original Overwatch 1 or Overwatch 2.

Which isn't to say the heroes released who happen to be Tanks are all bad? But there's a firm demarcation between-

A well designed Hero; engaging, fun, interactive and encouraging of any player willing to give them a try.

and

A well designed Tank: a Role/Job within the game with a certain responsibilities that caters to specific players with particular wants.

There's evidence of this demarcation found in other Roles. The Support Role, for instance, has seen a drastic uptick in "DPS"centric heroes throughout the last few years of Overwatch.

Illari, Kiriko, and, Baptiste all saw very swiftly delivered, widely useful, and borderline, automated mechanics introduced with their kits that performed their Support duties for them, while their Damage outputs and options became the core elements of engagement and interaction.

The devs have gone on to suggest this was done to entice more DPS players into the Role and Supports, for the last year, did enjoy a very promising and popular (read: broken) status.

The question of whether this is a good philosophy, let alone a fair one, is another discussion.

The argument I'd make is that these might be well designed Heroes? But the veracity of them being well designed Supports, is pretty loose and unstable.

Switching over to the Tank Role, the demarcation becomes even more stark; Tanks with heavy DPS influence (Mauga, Junkerqueen, Rammattra, Roadhog) tend to deliver a minimal Tank experience in favour of an oversimplified

Lots of Health + Sustain with unique Damage applications.

which, again, brings up the value of the design and how it heavily leans toward the Hero aspect while leaving the Role, largely unconsidered, if not outright minimized.

And this goes back further than the newer releases/re-works, into Overwatch 1. Of all the Tanks that have been released, after the original cast, how many can actually be considered well designed?

Sigma's kit remains a bloated 'omni-answer' with no weaknesses and little variability.

Orisa's kit went from a delay-bot with little agency, to a "Press 1-button every 5s" playstyle between the two games.

Doomfist's Tank expression oscillates between delivering every known type of CC available in such short intervals that few options exist for responding

Interrupting his interesting movement for a poorly disguised "window of opportunity" that sees him standstill and let the enemy waste time/resources on a ridiculous damage reduction %, that neither side can garner any satisfaction from.

Zarya's bubbles are now unlocked and, most often, executed purely on a selfish level, especially when combined with the singular Tank format that demands maximum survival when playing the front line. A minimal change of her design that has drastically increased the pendulum of her gameplay, swinging from extreme to extreme depending on the numbers.

Only Wrecking Ball, seems to provide a semblance of unique Tank Design that demands particular skillsets and learning, but even then, how much of that is the Uniqueness of the Hero and how much is that he is an effective Tank?

The argument that Tank is an unpopular role has been carried around from original to sequel for quite some time and is a very well-recognized refrain within the community.

Where it comes into deep question, is just how the design has gone from Winstons, Dvas, Reinhardts, and (old) Zaryas to a dumbed down philosophy on what makes a Tank and what sort of interest there is to be found with designs that are only really just...more health, more damage, and less thought?

And many of the older designs have become not just outdated, but difficult to execute against newer models who carry all their power in their stats and high-value, minimal execution mechanics.

Who wants to play a Role that hasn't had any creativity since the Devs thought about putting a Hamster in a Ball, into the game?
