The (entirely undisclosed) writing system Brin came up with in the World of Elan drives me nuts. Symbols were made with consideration for the schwa sound and their version of S looks like an O. (Or at least, whatever the first sound in their word for 'sun' is, that letter looks like an O.) The schwa accommodation alone means it's not the Latin alphabet. The S/O thing is probably further proof it's not the Latin alphabet, but could also indicate they're not speaking English. Which is kind of a moot point because everything pre-Riyria is implicitly localized into English if for no other reason than that most of the Fhrey language is blatantly localized and in Legends and also the old writing in Riyria does not match modern speech which is, itself, portrayed in English.
Anyway, it's not the Latin alphabet nor does it seem to be a cipher of the Latin alphabet because, again, it's got schwas. Assuming I read the bit about Brin and Roan discussing schwas correctly, anyway.
So they're not speaking English probably and they're also definitely not writing with the Latin alphabet or a 1:1 cypher... yet in Death of Dulgath, Payne makes a point of explicitly stating that his name is spelled with a Y and an E rather than an I, and Royce later makes a quip about his name being Pain after all.
(Not even gonna get into all the other times etymology is made up for words in the story, or the apparent vowel shift that managed to happen during the only few centuries of the empire where reading was wide-spread.)
I understand this is all still something that can be handwaved by saying "it's just localized into English" but my brain is still churning over this. Like...
Royce's whole entire name comes from a misread of Roy, a couple city segments reduced to initials, and someone slurring the words "male" and "born" together. And I'm gonna just ignore that the E in Royce is silent and the implications that has on the in-story alphabet. I'm not ignoring it. "Royce" only has three phonemes in it and even if you assume that the actual city section symbols were swapped out for Latin alphabet letters, how much space does that leave for the name Turin claimed while dropping him off at the orphanage? Did Brin invent a whole entire alphabet with useless extra letters despite her writing system actually being tailored for the language it was made in? Did the local language morph to the point of dropping certain sounds but keeping the old spelling, thus generating silent letters? Why? The vowel shift that I said I wasn't gonna get into seems, at least from how I read it, to mean that words are outright spelled differently between Fariland and Esrahaddon's time, which seems to imply that they adjust spellings to stick to pronunciation more readily than English does. But his last name is just comes from slurring the words "male" and "born" together. Given that there's no necessary reason for those words to be the same, what's his real name.
I understand that any second-world fantasy I read that uses names that sound like English words technically has this problem, but most of them don't also reference inventing an a writing system that explicitly isn't English and then making me think about it.
Realistically, I don't want Tolkien levels of worldbuilding. I like conlangs and fantasy writing systems, but when they're on the level of needing to read an appendix to learn that the fantasy language actually has a formal and informal you but only in certain cultures and some of the characters didn't use it and there were nuances to the social interactions I read that went overlooked due to all utterances of "you" being translated with the same word in English, you are expecting too much of me as a reader. But like... there is a little part of me that wants to know what their real names are when you tie their names to a bunch of words that I'm assuming were localized.
Also I'd like a Fhrey dictionary. I just... I need to know the pattern for the words. I want this.
#riyria revelations#legends of the first empire#world of elan#riyria#riyria chronicles#i guess the upshot is that this can all be summarized as “i'm putting this down to localization but what are their REAL names?”#whereas i'm straight up mad about the inheritance cycle runes#you're really gonna give me a plain latin alphabet cypher like that?#if you just wanna make me “feel like i'm in murtagh's world” then label your map without translation#if you're gonna make it legible then just put it in english#screw that nonsense with putting it in a straight up latin alphabet cypher that you dolled up to look like runes#that's too much effort to read for you to not follow through on the world building and make the runes feel organic rather than like a cyphe#you don't get to pronounce the G in “murtagh” and then...#...only give me samples of your made up alphabet that use silent and redundant letters#why is there a rune for C?#why is there explicitly a rune for C specifically that adheres to the pattern used for similar sounding letters#who makes unique runes for every accented E then goes “there's still one A. it makes a half a dozen different sounds depending on context”?#what are the ODDS that Eragon's world would incidentally develop the same stupid redundant letter that the romans dumped on us?#this was a riyria post but that's my side rant about the inheritance cycle#why did my family push me to study medicine i wish i studied linguisitics i wanna know what the odds actually were#i just wanna know what brin's alphabet started as and if it has silent letters now#(that's a lie i also wanna know what it looks like.)#i wanna know how to spell royce's name in his writing system#is there a letter that looks like an O at the end? DOES he use a silent letter?#does he not use an O because their version of 'sun' begins with a different phonetic sound?#or does he use a different letter because brin ALSO felt the need to specifically make a redundant letter that S and K already covered?#(also is there and in-story explanation for why 1st century falkirk's speech sounds closer to modern than 19th century esra?)

Rereading Riyria Revalations to a friend and struck by Alric's character development tbh.
The way he acts in the first Riyria book seems just arrogant and annoying, and super entitled (which it is). If you read a little more into it though, you can tell (the same way Royce and Hadrian do) that he is incredibly sheltered, and genuinely believes that saying/doing these things will save him-- that him telling them he's the king and treatening them with execution (again) will protect him. He has blind faith in his own importance.
At the end of the series, he becomes the king that everyone wanted him to be-- kind and compassionate, humble and wise. Don't get me wrong, he's still got an incurable case of little shit syndrome, but this time he does it from a "we're all friends" standpoint and not an "I'm better than all of you" standpoint.
I'm just having a lot of Alric feelings today because he deserved a happy ending too and I will Cry For Ever that he did not get one.

Thinking about how King Amrath would buy Arista beautiful hairbrushes on his travels to show her he loved her. Thinking about how Hilfred tried his best to salvage the brushes for Arista after the events of Theft of Swords because he knew what they meant to her. Thinking about how that single remaining hairbrush represents so much unspoken love.

Finished reading the “Riyria Revelations” series by Michael J Sullivan.
I read the bundle editions that contain two stories each.
This was a lot of fun!
It’s not super serious epic fantasy, it’s certainly not dark by any stretch. It’s just characters going on cool adventures in a fantasy setting and doing a little bit of world rescuing on the side.
At first I found the tone of the books a little jarring - I thought the prose was too simple and far too modern and that put me off a bit. After a while I got used to it and it didn’t bother me as much, especially after I understood that it was supposed to sound modern.
The series essentially follows two characters, the thieves Hadrian and Royce, who have complete opposite personalities.
A  lot of the fun in the series comes form just watching the interactions between these two and the completely different reactions they have to everything around them.
The series also has a really good supporting cast. Personally I loved the characters of Myron and Modina and was also very fond of others like Arista, Nimbus, Sir Breckton or that wonderful couple of bumbling aristocrats that shows up once or twice. Even Degan Gaunt grew on me after a while.
The plots can seem a little silly, even forced sometimes, but I find that part of the charm in this. The first book in particular had me rolling my eyes sometimes at how ridiculous the plot got, but I was having fun so I didn’t really bother me so much.
The politics are also really simplistic and sometimes almost childish, but again that didn’t bother me, because it clearly isn’t that kind of story.
My favorite stories in the series are the last two, with Wintertide narrowly placing ahead of Percepliquis. There was  a lot of great drama there and some wonderful character moments too, especially with the secondary cast.
Would certainly recommend to anyone looking for some light fantasy with fun characters and occasionally high stakes that doesn’t take itself too seriously. But please don’t make me try to spell that title again.

⌘ This month was a bit meh on the health department. It took a month for my voice to be back to normal again and a week later it wasn’t exactly great again but also not completely gone. I also got sick for the 3rd time in 2 months which is just really frustrating. And then on the last day of the month, poof my voice went again.
⌘ As you know I have been working on my depression since the end of last year. I got to the half way point with my one on one appointments and she suggested trying a course as group therapy instead of continuing on like this. I started it this month and have been twice now. There are a total of 8 sessions and we follow a book (with homework assignments yes lol). So it does require some extra work from me, especially on the emotional front again. It was interesting to see I also recognized some thoughts of it as I was reading Shadowsong.
⌘ I managed to burn my hand just below my thumb. Very certain a portion of it is a second degree burn. Fun times.

⌘ Justice League / Movie Surprisingly I actually liked this. The plot wasn’t that special but the underlying tensions in the relationships were. I was worried I wouldn’t like the flash since I’m so used to the tv show The Flash. But I shouldn’t have worried. Its Ezra Miller. The only thing I wish that it wasn’t that he endlessly was used for comic relief and that there was more humor for the group as a whole. The flash stood out like a sore tumb because of his youth and because he wasn’t as brooding as the others.  More interested in seeing Aquaman now (instead of just for Jason Momoa).
⌘ Astroboy / Movie I’d never watched this and when I was browsing on demand when I was sick I came across it. I liked it. Its cute. It could have done with some more depth (and poeh certainly some more poc) but overal it was a nice watch.
⌘ IT (2017) / Movie I had some time left over one day and I decided at random to watch this. I’ve never read the book or seen the older movie. I actually liked it. I mean the whole thriller parts aren’t exactly my thing but I enjoyed the characters and their relationships. Beverly ❤
⌘ Scooby-Doo Adventures: The Mystery Map / Movie This might be the weirdest movie of Scooby yet. They were puppets and they were shown as they were in the series a Pup Called Scooby-Doo so children. The plot was all kinds of meh so yeah not a good one.
⌘ Scooby-Doo and the Mask of the Blue Falcon / Movie This one had more of a old scooby doo feeling again. But the plot didn’t really interest me.
⌘ The Passage / Season 1 / Ep 1-2 I was going to try and read books 2 and 3 before I went to look up to watch this show, like in a few years, lol. But then I saw that our Fox also started showing it very quickly after its release in the USA, and here we are. This is really just the set up and it doesn’t diverge from the book that much. Amy however in the tv show is so kick ass. Love her.
⌘ Zoo / Season 2 / Ep 1-4 We finally started this season and it is so weird oh my gosh. And addicting in a way. But so weird. Like a train wreck. You just can’t look away.

⌘ As for the blog, I am going on a Semi-Hiatus to fix some of the broken photos. There are still posts coming along like top ten tuesday and a wrap up post, and some books I read for review. But no more than that. Hopefully it will give me some breathing space to fix the broken photos, even though I really don’t want to spend time on it again. -_-
This monthly wrap up will be linked up with the monthly one by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction. This so we can blog hop to each others wrap ups easier.

Riyria Revelations by Michael J. Sullivan. Completed series. Main characters are a thieving duo. The story is character driven and all the plots points merge in the last book for fantastic reveals. The banter between characters is excellent. It doesn't have a complex magic system like Stormlight but was very enjoyable nonetheless. There's also other epic fantasy books by this author you can check out (that I haven't read yet).
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch also has thieves and magic.
The Midnight Lie is YA fantasy with a story about lost magic and Gods. It also has lots of romance. Read this recently and really enjoyed it. Only one book is out yet.
Strange The Dreamer by Laini Taylor. Lost magic and Gods again. Completed duology.
An Ember in The Ashes by Sabaa Tahir is dystopian YA fantasy with diverse characters. 3/4 books out. Last book releasing this December.
Do you have any Epic Fantasy recommendations? I need a book to read and my TBR list is surprissingly short right now.

In any case, he would stop later...” Unwrapped Sky by Rjurik Davidson

"Neither of us,” Hadrian said.
“No,” Royce said. “That’s the mistake people always make, and they make it because they can’t grasp the truth.”

The Rose and the Thorn (The Riyria Chronicles #2) Author: Michael J. Sullivan Genre: Fantasy Pages: 347 Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Summary: For more than a year Royce Melborn has tried to forget Gwen DeLancy, the woman who saved him and his partner Hadrian Blackwater from certain death. Unable to get her out of his mind, the two thieves return to Medford but receive a very different reception — Gwen refuses to see them. The victim of abuse by a powerful noble, she suspects that Royce will ignore any danger in his desire for revenge. By turning the thieves away, Gwen hopes to once more protect them. What she doesn’t realize is what the two are capable of — but she’s about to find out.
The Riyria universe can be a bit confusing. We have The Riyria Revelations (3 books) that were published first, and then we have The Riyria Chronicles (again, 3 books) that were published after the Revelations but act as prequels to the universe. I am reading the series in chronological order but they can be read in publishing order too.
I found The Rose and the Thorn more rounded than the first book (The Crown Tower). The plot was a bit more complex and it involved more characters and storylines. This being a prequel, I felt that most of the characters here will make an appearance in the Revelations and play important parts. Also, the structure was more logical, leaving me with a sense of closure and still making me beg for more.
I marked this one as fantasy, but the truth is that it doesn’t have many fantastic elements except for one character whose gift doesn’t really play an important part… yet? The way I see this series, it’s like a medieval A Team. Are you in trouble? Do you need justice in a world that’s giving you the cold shoulder? Fear not! These two outlaws will find a way to help you! As long as you can pay the price…
The characters were just incredible. This is a story with adventure, action, and treason, but it relies almost completely on the characters’ personalities. I thought I loved the main duo when I finished the first book, but I was wrong. I love them so much now! Hadrian is the one that looks like he could kill you but is actually a cinnamon roll, and Royce looks like he could kill you and could actually kill you. Ok, silly jokes aside, in this part I got to know them better, I got to see how they impact each other’s lives, how their friendship develops. I’ve always said that a hero is not interesting if they don’t care about anyone. I need to know that someone can get under their skin and that they are capable of love, even if it’s just for their grandma. Well, these boys are tough, ruthless thieves/assassins, but they care. I liked them so much that the moment I finished the book I was already missing them.
The one problem I find here is that the writing was too dense for my taste. Some sentences were five lines long and it could be exhausting at times. I had to go back at the beginning of the sentence to remember what was all about and it made me feel like I didn’t understand English even though I read most of my books in English.
However, I can’t wait to see where all the intrigues will lead. I seriously can’t wait.

Tolkien, Chaucer, Wells?
J. R. R. Tolkien – A book with world building you love: And finally, saving the best for last, Game of Thrones OF COURSE. George RR Martin built such a rich world with such a rich cast of characters and I cannot tear myself out of his world its so beautiful and God why can’t he write the last book faster...
A Song of Ice and Fire is powerful, dark, low fantasy set in a gloomily realistic world with a cast of characters none of which are quite evil or quite good... which I LOVE.
Geoffrey Chaucer – A book you love but sometimes forget about: Before I imply something crazy, I’ve only read this book twice, once yesterday and once a year or two ago, so its not like its one of my top top read it a billion times lists, but if I’ve forgotten any of those, I’ve forgotten about it, so... Phule’s Company. It’s a nice little comedic break from all my epic drama and dark fiction, and its got a lovely diverse cast of characters and a nice narrative. Its a nice little book and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to smile.
Phule’s Company is the story of the headstrong heir to a business empire who decides to take on a company of loser and misfit military personnel... and turn them into an elite unit. Needless to say, its quite amusing to watch (or read about anyways).
H. G. Wells – A book that inspired your writing style: So the best answer to this question is A Song of Ice and Fire again but I’m trying not to repeat answers, so I’ll instead answer with a book that I’m trying to incorporate more of the style of into my writing, or rather a series; The Riyria Chronicles/Riyria Revelations series. They’re a fairly obscure bunch of fantasy books about a thief and a warrior who team up, and the world building is decent, but the characters are so vibrant and full of life. See, what I’ve found is that while my worlds are gorgeous and fleshed out, my characters can come across a bit dead. So I’m hoping to channel some of the life from the characters in Riyria to bring my own characters to life.
Riyria is a funny, engaging tale of two mismatched companions as they attempt to navigate the worlds of politics and wizards, and stupid bloody quests. You’ll love it. All of you.

I’ll show and update with the bingo card every 3 months here.
⌘ So instead of health problems at the start of the month I now had car problems. My car had its yearly check up at the end of February. In March I had to return to fix a shake while driving. And in April I seemed to have problems with my cooling system. It was not fun.  I gave me a lot of stress and sadness. I tried very hard not to let it rule me. It got fixed and as we were driving back from my parents at Easter, another light went on. Grr.
⌘ The change of the clock at the end of March messed a bit with Merijn’s sense of bed time and he keeps coming out of bed for 30 minutes. I hope he’ll get used to it again because it being light when he goes to bed is just going to get worse.
⌘ We got some fun bits for our garden to cheer it up.
⌘ We took Merijn to a fairytale theme park more geared towards his age with a very large playground as well. He loved it. He was so tired but he loved it.
⌘ Then a few days later Merijn got the sixth disease/roseola. He broke out in bumps and red splots over night, ended up with a high fever for 24 hours and then his temperature went back to normal. The break out took a few days longer to go away, een more so with some of the warmer days we had. He was better in time for Easter
⌘ For Easter we went to my parents. Which was fine. We had some great weather. Merijn stayed the week with my parents and we went back on King’s Day.
⌘ For some reason I got a bad case of hayfever? And then I woke up the last weekend of April and I had a swollen, stiff and sometimes painful knee. Who even knows what I did…
Reviews
⌘ The Unicorn Anthology. Edited by Peter S. Beagle and Jacob Weissman // ARC ⌘ The Beauty and the Beast by Gabriella-Suzanna Barbot de Villeneuve ⌘ Slayer (Slayer 1) by Kierstin White // ARC ⌘ Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor 1) by Mark Lawrence ⌘ Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

Tumblr media
⌘ The Lost City of Z / Movie / DNF I watched a good portion of this but it was a bit boring and I couldn’t really care about any of the characters.
⌘ The Warrior’s Gate / Movie / DNF I couldn’t do it. This screamed white savior all over it. Also why in hells name would a chinese man give a white teenage boy that works for him a family heirloom?
⌘ Spirited Away / Movie / Rewatch
⌘ Goosebumps / Movie I was excited to see they were showing this here and I liked the humor at the start. Then it kind of dwindled and I think Jack Black was trying a bit too hard to be honest.
⌘ Inspector Lewis / Season 1 / Ep 1-4 / Rewatch / COMPLETED
⌘ Game of Thrones / Season 6 / Ep 1-8 Well I finally started this season now everyone is watching the final season, lol.
In April I participated in Anderwereld’s #aprilmeetthebookworm photo challenge so here you can see the picture I took for that.

⌘ It is WYRD AND WONDER TIME! I’ve already started on May 1st with some posts for this fantasy themed month and of course so shall be my reading.
⌘ Other than that I don’t really know. I guess I’ll be working on the blog some. And I kind of really need to get on those pictures. But that might be more of a Summer evening task. You know, those nights that you can’t sleep on time anyway because its so hot?
This monthly wrap up will be linked up with the monthly one by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction. This so we can blog hop to each others wrap ups easier.
