Easy marbled pattern tutorial (which is actually just a technique I made up after playing around with random tools).

I use IbisPaint so some tools might be different for your program.

Start with drawing some lines in different colours. They don't need to be perfectly even, actually a bit of randomness is better - I used a watercolour brush here. Use colours from a palette if you're not sure what colours fit well together.

Apply some distortions/transformations. Use as many as you like to get the effect you want. I used a twirl and then a wave.

The wave creates white spaces, so I needed to zoom in to get rid of them.

If you aren't happy with any part of the picture, you can manually paint over it at this point. I used the smudge tool so that it's not so pronounced where I edited it.

Man now I’m just thinking about how much I love visual analysis. I’m a huge advocate for art not needing to mean anything deep and sometimes it’s pretty just to be pretty, but also our history is so heavily painted into canvas and stone and etched into copper and limestone!! It’s amazing how many paintings that seem to just be pretty (especially the Rococo period!! It was known for being a flirty, pretty era but has so much imagery and meaning in them) have serious, political, or sometimes even satirical stories behind them.

Visual analysis and visual comprehension is so, so valuable. I feel like since learning how to do it formally and then informally my writing and literary comprehension has actually improved. It’s also just so, so fun!! I know I don’t have many followers but if ur interested in doing some visual analysis, here are the steps to doing so given to me in my art history class. I cannot emphasise how fun and interesting it is to do and how valuable of a skill it is!! You’ll learn so much about history from doing it.

I have the notes in the read more if ur interested at all!! : ] This is a very long ramble and I knooow it probably wont go far, but please! If u do see this try out visual analysis!! Its so, so much fun, it helps enrich ur writing, and u will learn so much about history. In a time with AI on the rise, with fake images, editing, and photorealistic lies, your best weapon is your comprehension and ability to analyse. I've been told time and time again by art history lecturers that its so important to be able to do this, to any degree, or to even just be aware of it as a concept because you will start looking and taking note of it even subconciously!!

Start doing this by looking as little as you can about the time period, artist, or subject!! Thats the best way to approach visual analysis. Imagine it like going into a book blind, you arent sure what the genre is but you can guess from the first few lines its probably a dystopian! This is best done because it means you're more subjective when you analyse it visually. Visual analysis is different from a critical visual analysis, that comes next!

The example I have here is from my notes, which is the pastel drawing Madame de Pompadour in her study by Maurice Quentin de La Tour, is a Rococo period painting! The Rococo period is by far one of my favourite periods to dissect. That and Dadaism.

Step 1: Identify. EG: A painting, a sculpture, a drawing. What does it look like the medium is? This is more from a formal point of view, being able to identify the medium or form is a first step. It also leads you into being able to question why that specific medium may have been chosen later on in the analysis! Medium doesnt always have a purpose, but sometimes it will. EG: Prints were cheaper to purchase then a painting because they were reproducible and didnt require as much time on the artists behalf. So, having a wall of purchased oil paintings vs prints would mean something different status wise.

Step 2: Describe what you see, not what you THINK. EG: A woman with her head tilted to the left (from viewer looking in), she is in a lightly coloured, elegant dress with golden vine-like patterns over it. She holds a blue book filled with music notes, an instrument sits behind her. The desk is cluttered with books, papers, and a globe. The technique is realistic, smooth and refined details, a cool toned colour palette with her being in the lighter tonal value to keep intense focus on her. The difference between what you see vs what you think is saying "She is looking to the left." vs "she is gazing to the left, possibly for show or possibly looking at someone/something off screen" or "She is staring off to the left, looking at her hands, uncaring of the painter" Because THAT is in the next step! But you need to build the bones of subjectively what you are seeing. You can interpret it all later, first of all, define if the dress is blue!

Step 3: Interpret. EG: Conclude the above information to be information about the figure and analyse who they could be. This is where you can have more fun with the analysis. A lot of the time this will show a bias you may have, for example, if we keep with the example of pastel drawing, we can deduce that she is a musician even without knowing its Madame De Pomadour! She has music strewn over her desk, she has an instrument near her. You could also probably say she is well educated with the amount of books covering her desk, well travelled maybe with the globe or perhaps trying to appear as if she is? We dont know who she is, or if you do maybe you dont know her at depth, so for all we know like many artworks done in the Rococo period, or truly most periods, this could be done as a sign of status. She isnt looking directly at the painter, she isnt positioned and sat formally for a sitting, so we can guess she probably has these works done of her often. This isnt anything new. From her pose, her dress, the items cluttering her station, we can assume she is of some status!

Step 3: Evaluate! Now, I wont lie and say I know everything about Madame De Pomadour and this being tumblr im SURE theres someone out there who knows far more about her then I do, but, this is the intrigue of visual analysis. I dont know anything about her, not truly, but in a formal setting and not just an exercise like this was and is, this is where I would then do a SHIT load of research on both her, the artist, the medium, and then even the objects she has in her background. Research into how the artist interacted with their models is also a very good thing to look into (did they have a lot of repeat customers? Were they hired on has a permanent artist for someone? Did they ever do a portrait of anyone of royalty or high status?) as good or bad reports says a lot more about the context of the painting.

If an artist doesn't like someone they will often sneak details into the background to signify so. Think hiding them in shadow, maybe changing some of their jewellery to be from the fashion of a period from earlier to make them seem less on trend. Maybe they will make the person look even more grand to earn favour (think most monarchs, first to come to mind being Henry the Eighth.)

Art was heavily purposeful, even if it is "just" a portrait there is always intent behind it. There is always some reason, even if the artist did not put anything else into it the use of that painting then becomes the meaning. Was it used as a gift to gain favour? Was it used to incite fear? Henry the Eighth would send his representatives with these MASSIVE paintings of himself, made to look stronger, taller and healthier then he actually was, in order to scare them-especially those who hadnt seen him before.

Anyway, this was a long post, but I hope someone gets something out of it!! I love visual analysis and comprehension and i think its important and fun and just!! Have fun ok!!

As an artist, I think ai art is a very complex issue. Yes it can be used as a tool to advance creativity, but capitalism ultimately twists it so that it is not used ethically.

I like some ai generated memes. Its really funny to watch Joe Biden banter with Leon S Kennedy, or watch deepfakes of Preminger singing Lady Gaga. But I feel like the same humor could be achieved without the use of ai. You could splice together lines ala ytp or animate Preminger singing. It just requires more time and skill, and thats really the draw of ai. Ai helps a greater pool of people do things they normally couldnt do because it cuts out the work.

The capability to expand what people can do and create is good! I once followed a disabled person on tumblr who made ai art for personal use because his disability meant he couldn't draw. Ive also used ai art generators in the past, back when the results were super uncanny and whacky, to generate funny images or interesting eldritch horror-y art. If ai art wasn't built upon so much stolen art, that'd be a completely beautiful thing. Id love to donate my art to an ai program that only trains on explicitly donated work. I think thatd be really cool. But most people Ive seen making ai art and ai art generators are tech bros who only care about end results and money instead of appreciating the intent, technique, and artistry that artists pour into their work. And of course, not giving two shits about us getting paid.

Ive seen people make ai to intentionally copy the works of particular artists. It's almost indistinguishable from their art style, and to me, that feels insulting. These artists put so much work into their art, only for someone to churn out much more art in their style, and faster. Copying art you like has always been a thing among artists, to pay homage to creators and to learn new things by studying, but these ai art pieces that explicity train on an artists work and replicate their style feel... really hollow. Wheras among most artists, their replication comes from a place of respect and admiration, and requires truly learning and following the techniques an artist used, ai art just pulls from already existing assets with no real direction to guide it except a simple prompt. Theres no respect for the artist here, just someone who wants more of an artists work but doesnt actually care about the artist themself.

The amount of labor you need to create ai art vs regular art, and how ai art steals work from artists, is a discussion all on its own. This doesnt really have an easy black and white solution because of capitalism. In a world where we wouldnt need money to survive, it wouldnt really matter that ai art takes less effort to make because it wouldnt infringe on artists livlihoods. But as it is, and especially in our "quantity and familiarity over quality" consumerist culture, the attention it takes from artists can cause loss of revenue, and people offering ai art commissions only hurt artists more. The most popular areas of the internet already arent great platforms for artists, even though were forced to use them. Our culture doesnt really value our work, and most artists offer their work for ridiculously low prices just to sell anything at all. My pixel art commissions are $9. $9 for hours of sitting at my computer, working and shaping and reworking the pixels until theyre just right. Color, position, everything has a lot of time, care, and skill put into it. I wish I could charge double what I pay, but I have an extremely small platform, so Im forced to charge barely anything at all. If we did not need money to survive, it wouldnt be that big of a deal. But we do. So it is.

And as things stand, even disregarding the problem of capitalism, theres just too many harmful ways ai can be exploited because theres barely any regulation. The deepfaked nudes, the easy misinformation, etc. I personally dont think regulation will be enough bc the base problem is caused by capitalism, and tbh I think media literacy plays a huge part, but there still needs to be. Its just an incredibly dangerous technology as it stands right now.

Also worth noting, is how algorithms can easily lead to radicalization. A study came out showing that new tiktok users who watch certain "gateway" content will gradually be shown more and more extremist stuff. (Source: x *) Especially on social media sites, which are designed to promote controversial posts because theres more engagement, this can lead to someone potentially becoming part of a hate group. I bet theres ways algorithms could be written to prevent this, but everyone wants money, so its probably not gonna change anytime soon. Consumerism is a bitch.

Also, algorithms promote the most commonly accepted ideas, which causes bias and can cause social and scientific progress to become stagnant at best, and actively harmful at worst.

Basically, ai needs to be better regulated, capitalism sucks, and ai art is a whole can of worms. I feel like humanity needs to keep ai art on the highest shelf until we can work out the ethical dilemmas we already have.

like yeah im not so sure how the logic of either of them being in those proffessions would work but im talking mostly aesthetics here

like. harry being a florist just. does something to me. like when kim is like he needs hobbies if you get the gardening gloves he suggest gardening is just very good. maybe its a bit of like instead of becoming a teacher first hes a florist first and stays there. or when he was a teacher they had some of a garden in there and he learned and then maybe got a part time job at a florist to support him on his teacher salary bc those usually arent enough. also i think he still has at least some of his adiction issues but not necesarily to the in game level (maybe amphetamines to be able to keep up with his lifestyle also maybe he grows weed but less relevant until later). and maybe he actually got to marry dora and is actually divorced here. working too much, not making enough money, and when back at home hes still an addict, maybe the relationship lasted more but still it never got good enough to keep.

and kim... theres a few options. either undercover just being on the tattoo shop somehow which is like. not the most sense making but still a possibility. or.. he never became a cop, either, got too disappoined by the system early on, noticed the injustice, but realized that it didnt matter what he did it wouldnt be enough. or he did join the rcm for a bit and then quit bc of that, maybe also eyes died in here too and that was the last straw for him leaving. maybe hes not necesarily the guy doing the tattoos, but more of the designs and piercings (i assume its a million times easier doing piercings than tattoos. i dont mean that it doesnt require a technique too tho but getting a needle through skin for a piercing seems easier than having the pulse to work on a permanent piece in someones skin with specific pressure with consistence, and if he was a cop and quit maybe he has shakier hands.... idk. i dont know how stuff like this works generally ngl. also idk. can you have a tattoo.. parlor? and do designs but not the tattoos themselves? id assume you can but no idea)

ok yeah something like that maybe. and also the shops are either side by side or right across the street. i can imagine harry walking through the tattoo parlor and looking at the designs and looking at a few plant based designs and liking them and just. going in. not exactly for a tattoo or anything but more to like. know how it is and maybe meet the artist and then he sees kim which i imagine with a lot of tattoos and piercings which is sort of whats fueling this at this point bc i wasnt gonna think about it for too long but now im too deep into it and like i imagine this kim as.. kind of distant as he tends to be, will try to hide the fact he was a cop bc at this point hes not proud of that, he just likes making designs while listening to speedfreaks fm, which you can hear from outside the parlor while walking on the streets, but he is cool, and if you talk to him he will talk to you, hes just maybe awkward but also he is kinda weird (which has harry like 👉👈)

ai learning could actually be great if we learn how to use it as a tool for both artists and the inexperienced.

one point i see often made is that ai art couldnt exit without humans artists. thats stupid as hell. human art is inspired by human art. we look at each-others techniques and art in order to produce better art. some humans are a bit mindless about it, but as long as they arent stealing we cant knowingly call them out.

if the ai actually plagiarizes someones art by using the same exact pose or whatever, yeah thats bs but i havent seen it happen. if an ai wins an art competition, thats also bs. it means that we need new rules that accommodate this new technology.

moreover, i see the inclusion of ai tools as a way to reach more people who want to create but are limited for whatever reason. people who have had to stop due to disability could use the ai in a way that doesnt require painful use of their hands. people with no art skills could see their ideas with new life. artists without much time could see how a rough concept looks before they start.

i imagine there will never stop being work for human artists, especially since ai will probably receive reasonable regulation as it becomes more popular. teams of artists could be hired to create a unique database from which a company owned ai can pull from. artists who are well read in art history and concepts would have a special talent explaining to the ai exactly what to produce. but more than anything, humans are often sentimental and they want to know that something beautiful was created because someone held that beauty in their heart when they were making it...

it doesnt have to be a competition and we dont have to be scared about it. new technology requires new regulation, and our concerns should be pointed towards where the line should not be crossed, and how to make this a useful tool for ourselves like other innovative art tools before it.

Ik at least a small part of it has to be admittedly like... bitterness? which is never a very good justification so I want to acknowledge it and sweep it aside.  But it is real. the like.. dreamy aesthetic one i dont mind so much for this point because its really easy to recognize but the new ai “art” program that you can input prompts into and it creates a whole thing from scratch- That one gives me a bit of a squick because like... The average person online is ATROCIOUS at recognizing the differences between different media and is SUPER SUPER easily fooled by like, photorealism ad digital manipulations and stuff *already* and I can pROMISE you majority of people wont know when they are looking at a completely AI fabricated image. 

I dont think that the tech isnt *really fucking cool* and that it shouldn’t be used- I can actually think of a ton of applications where it would be really really useful for people in all sorts of fields and skill levels- and I’d love to see it used honestly. 

But what I dont like is that like... slow making art forms and like, techniques that require a LOT of time and skill to hone are ALREADY massively undervalued and being replaced by things that take 0.2 seconds to do with AI and program help now and its like... Very very disheartening as someone who tends to gravitate towards process heavy things. Because speed will always be prioritized in a capitalist environment, these tools will replace artists, and that is a good thing for like, individuals wanting to improve their personal gains, and will make a lot of things way easier for people both skilled and unskilled in visuals generation. Which isnt entirely a bad thing. But it almost assures that like, concept artists and illustrators and stuff will be out of a lot of jobs because like. Why pay someone to go to school to learn to paint it and pay them an hourly wage or contract when you can type it into a program and get a believable image in 30 seconds.  And also like. As much as im very anti-gatekeeping art for like, learning and skill sharing and stuff. I am a little gate-keepy on who should be making art for profit. and ONLY. ONNNNNLLLYYYY. because I worry about the environmental costs of people *producing* just to make money. We create so many objects that just Do Not need to exist and are contributing to massive industries that are decimating the environment. And like I’m not talking abt people making art their passionate abt. Im talking abt like, etsy digital asset resellers and shit. People who make 1000 different merch objects just to diversify their passive income and dont really care abt who is buyig it or why?  Like its admittedly a little pretentious sure but like. It’s also just I have a STUPID sensitivity to the responsibility opf the individual to a point where its honestly ridiculous. I refuse to make art in the medium my degree is in because the environmental cost to the environment involved in being reliant on mining and oil and gas skeeves me out too much lol. which is kinda silly. because you cat really escape it. But I also like. dont have any art to make in that medium that I think the world NEEDS that justifies that. so like. why bother. Where as working in linoleum, its biodegradable, paper is compostable. Like sure its still not ideal and shipping and all that is still a huge impact and inks still require mining. But its a Way more even load of cause and effect so it doesnt make me feel as horrid y’know?  anyway sidetracked. Point being sometimes things being easier and more available isnt like. great. and i really would like to see society push towards *less* and slower more mindful, well researched creation rather than just dopamine seeking creative impulses and monetization.

do you mean digital art? almost all of my autobio comics are pen drawings! digital art is absolutely not a requirement, dont worry! check out my tag #pen and ink

you can make comics digitally or traditionally, the medium doesnt matter very much, what matters is making the art visible and quality in terms of image/canvas dimensions and effects. i use the free app camscanner on my phone to upload pen comics, its really simple, the image quality isnt fantastic but for my purposes (easy editing of black & white drawings to post online) it gets the job done.

if you want to do digital art, there are lots of free programs that are pretty easy to use esp if you combine them with traditional art, i know some artists who draw traditionally and then add colors in a photoshop-like program. with a little experimenting, im sure you can find the right program and technique to use!

traditional art is awesome, don’t even worry about the digital aspect and certainly dont let it discourage you from making art! the only necessary parts of the digital realm are for editing and posting, which are pretty easy :)

hoseok is SUCH  a proficient dancer ...i talk about him so much but the truth is that he’s not just an artist but he’s a performer. the best performer in bts. he’s able to master the choreography inside & outside of the studio, and when he gets on stage he’s able to present the piece with energy and confidence and required technique. he does not give up one thing for another; there’s no compromise when he dances. his footwork doesnt suffer because hes focusing on his upper body. his arms dont lose placement because he’s thinking about his legs, etc. he’s able to deliver a message using his ENTIRE body, and moreso do that with ease. watching him dance make all the steps seem so natural like anybody could get up and do them the way he does. even the most awkward dances, he can pull off without looking stilted. 

furtherMore, during his performances he’s also proficient in usage of his face. he consistently matches the tone of the piece but also demonstrates his confidence, often by smiling, laughing, or grinning while he’s dancing. many dancers become internal & forget to connect with the audience, but hoseok is always willing to include the crowd in his performances. he invites people to look at him & seals the Deal by looking like hes having the time of his life. not many performers can do that, much less after a long dance set w difficult choreography like bts’

man what are you talking about. you can’t understand labor and type this. i wanna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that when you say “high fashion” you’re talking about brand-centric hypebeast stuff (or even more general logomania, like the price difference between a leather bag with or without the lv logo), because you could passably argue that there’s not that much difference between a supreme hoodie and a hoodie from a department store, but your mention of impracticality makes me think you’re talking about haute couture? in which case a garment produced by a team of couturiers is probably going to be distinguishable from a kmart garment. my god. those artisans have some of the highest standards of living in the industry. haute couture legally must be handmade, first of all. it is the avenue in which fashion is most closely aligned with fine art. to call it bourgeois because only the rich can afford it is like calling paintings bourgeois because only the rich can afford them. the reason both are so expensive is because capitalism requires artists, if they want to live, to survive entirely on the proceeds of their art, which means that a hundred hours of labor must be covered by a single purchase. that doesn’t mean paintings are all pomp and we should just screenprint pictures instead. it just means that our society might benefit if a painter’s works didnt have to pay for her food and shelter.

but even if you’re talking about the lesser impracticalities of pret a porter garments, i think it’s unfair to judge clothing on comfortability alone, mainly because human beings for all of time have deemed uncomfortable clothing acceptable for certain occasions and roles. ask any club kid whether their primary concern is wearing comfortable clothes, for example. and i must stress that it’s not at all a new initiative—

like look at this! you think we do this because it’s practical or comfortable? millions of folk costumes like these are made with the intention of transcending the regular image of the body (especially while one moves and dances), because that’s a concept human beings are naturally interested in.

in my personal experience, the most impractical thing about designer clothes is that the fabrics often mean they cannot be washed in machines— but the convenience of throwing an acetate sweater into a washing machine is, also in my experience, outweighed by the thousands of microplastics it would release into the water, so perhaps that’s neither here nor there.

even IF we analyze clothing exclusively for comfort, though, there’s still a high likelihood that the garment with the more expensive production will be the more comfortable. this is mainly because of artisanship and fabric quality. silk satin and chiffon, for example, will always be more comfortable (and less scratchy) than their polyester sisters, because silk is an organic material made by silkworms and polyester is plastic, which doesnt allow nearly as much air to pass through. even if they were functionally the same, the expensiveness of the silk would be preferable because we wouldn’t have to drill for oil to weave it. next is the fact that the body is a complicated, constantly-varying, three-dimensional shape, which means that appealing to it requires artisanal skill. a tailored garment that took ten hours to plan will be more comfortable than one that took thirty minutes, because it was made with more care and didn’t sacrifice technique for cheap convenience. and speaking of cheap convenience, there’s an almost certain likelihood that purchasing the kmart garment means severely underpaying someone for their labor. theres also a very high chance, again, that it is made out of something that won’t biodegrade. of course, this isn’t to say that high fashion doesnt ever use artificial material; it certainly does. the biggest problems with the fashion industry are the biggest problems with capitalist consumerism, namely that the nature of the trend cycle requires constant unending production for every season (and, increasingly, more than once per season), which ramps up the emissions both in factory production and in shipping items as soon as possible, all the time. but it would be a severe misidentification of the problem to claim that artisanal labor and organic fibers are themselves superfluous.

i’m going to end with a favorite savoir faire video abt the painters and seamstresses behind a certain dior collection. dior is bourgeois as fuck, of course, and savoir faire documentaries also function as advertisements for ateliers. but if you look at the techniques that make clothing cost more money, and then look back back at the history of clothing— weaving, embroidery, and other textile design has been important to us for centuries, and the fact that their beauty is now becoming less accessible is not a testament to their decadence, but to the fact that capitalism distances us from the things that we are seemingly biologically engineered to want: eating good food, hanging out, and decorating our bodies in interesting ways and with loving care.

people debate what is or isnt art... i think art is “objects in service of ideas”. i think i got that phrase from an eric taxxon video? objects not necessarily meaning physical objects, like, this applies to color and sound, but they are in service of ideas, conveying things that are more than the sum of their parts. even if its just a drawing of a person, that person is being conveyed through lines on a paper. its more than the sum of its parts, its representing the idea of that person via ink.

this definition allows for all sorts of things to be considered art though.... to which i say “yeah, it does”

are advertisements art? yeah, i mean, why not? just because something is “art” doesnt mean it’s good. art can be bad if the ideas are bad, even if the execution is really well done, like a super bowl commercial that had tons of skilled creative people working on it, but is ultimately just a fucking commercial and i consider that to be bad. art can also bad when the ideas are good, but the execution is bad, like a movie about idk optimism and friendship or whatever or an examination of racism or something (which i think are subjects i am interested in and like to see art about), but if its poorly made or poorly thought out then it is “bad”. 

im okay with like tons and tons and tons and tons of things to be art. the root word “ars, artis” in latin doesnt mean “grand magnificent breathtaking tribute to the human experience” it just means “a skill, a craft, a technique”. is language art because it is sounds in service of ideas? maybe. at the very least, people often use artfulness when speaking, using metaphors and creative innovative ways to phrase ideas. even the lack of thoughtfulness is an artistic choice when speaking. you’re communicating how you think and feel about something.

i think it was noam chomsky (or fuck idk maybe it wasnt, it doesnt really matter to me who said this) who said that language probably didnt arise in humans as a means purely of communication, cause if it had, itd be like the communication we see in animals, with set real-world information you would be able to transmit to another person. if you had an idea there would be one way to say it. language probably actually came about in humans as a means not just of communication, but of expressing ideas, and there is a difference. its not just saying facts, its expressing your emotions, inquiring about the world and about other people, sharing ideas not just facts. there are as many ways to say a given thought as there are people who have ever lived or will ever live, and more than that actually, cause people can often find several ways to say an idea, maybe none of which had been thought of before in that exact way. that last sentence there... do you think anyone has ever put those words in that order before? if so, would you have encountered it? no? then how come you could read it and know what i mean, despite never seeing those words in that order? because language isnt finite, and every sentence requires a bit of creativity and personality to express. so maybe language is art, and i’m okay with that.

‘Portrait’ – Vector Workshop

This workshop looks at a basic digital process of converting an image into a vector illustration. By using the subject of a peer, it also looks at a possible way to look at people and use graphics to change their image. This session is a part of a weekly practical development workshop which mainly looks to improve technical skills in digital packages, build up a portfolio of work/experimentation and inspire processes I could use within my project.

Process

Initially, I had to take a photograph of a peer but there were certain requirements I had to keep in mind to ease the later steps. These included:

Contrast (Areas of light as well as areas of shadow)

High enough quality so that there is enough visual information in the image to be kept when making digital manipulations

Avoid complex backgrounds to simplify the vectorising stage.

Once I had a suitable image, the next step was to make image adjustments in Photoshop before vectorising in Illustrator. 

Increase the contrast of the image using the levels adjustment to darken the shadows and lighten the highlights

Duplicate the image layer, add the ‘High Pass’ filter and set this newly created layer to the blending mode ‘Hard Light’. This will exaggerate the details of the face.

Add a ‘threshhold’ layer adjustment to convert the image into only black and white pixels. The black pixels will be the darker parts of the image, and the white pixels will be the brighter parts. This will act as the outline of the vector.

Duplicate the original source image and add a ‘cutout’ filter (found under Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic>Cutout) to limit it to 2 or 3 colours. 

Save both the outline and cutout versions as JPEGs and add them into Illustrator

By making these adjustments, it made sure that in Illustrator, when vectorising, all the necessary visual information is maintained and the image doesn’t become too far from the original to the point where it is unrecognisable.

In Illustrator, all I had to do was convert these images into a vector format. To do so, I used the ‘Image Trace’ feature in Illustrator which automatically converts bitmap images into vector paths and expanded them so I could edit each path individually as well as edit the colours. Using this method means that sometimes some parts of an image may be lost/disturbed as it is an automatic process, but this is why I made the adjustments first in Photoshop to lower the chance of this happening. 

Lastly, I overlapped the outline version and the cutout version with the outline on top and edited the colours. To do this, once I aligned both layers, I chose Edit>Edit Colours>Recolour Artwork. This allows me to edit each colour as a whole and is a quick way to convert many colours at once without making a final decision. 

What is the effect of this outcome?

In comparison to the original photograph, this illustrative rendition features more personality in my opinion. Everyone is familiar with photographic portraits as well as how people look. I used ‘Vans’ as the company as their logo was present in the image and was carried through the vector.

Many companies have used celebrities as part of their marketing in order to get the celebrity’s audience on board with their own message. Through the celebrity endorsing the company and being part of the message (much like Mo Farah and Nike) the company’s message can be tied along with the values of the celebrity, benefiting both parties. 

What new ideas does this give me?

Before this workshop, I was still unsure of how I could use people to push my message forward. This showed me the possibility of using a portrait of someone and creating a graphic with this as the main focus and how this can actually gain more of an audience, especially when the subject has their own following. 

Looking Back 

Although the outcomes are very different, the ‘Runners’ workshop and this one both link with the theme of people and have given me inspiration of what I could produce for my own final outcome. In terms of the visual language, for my animation, I wanted to maintain the original texture of my sketches so I used a bitmap file type. Although this limits the resolution of an image, it is better for accurately keeping textures and similar complex imagery. This portrait workshop demonstrates the pros of using vector a format. Although there is no texture, this can give it it’s own look separate from bitmap graphics. On top of this, the accessibility is better in terms of how you can apply vector graphics as there is no limitation to its scale - this means it works a lot better for large prints (such as poster adverts and billboards). 

Moving Forward

I aim to use the skills I have practised here to help me develop ideas on how I could manipulate the portrayal of a person to my advantage. I have done traditional animation, basic digital manipulation; I feel like the next step I should take is trying to combine my digital and animation skills together to expand on different ways I can animate. I looked at After Effects animation with keyframes instead of frames in my last brief (Glitch) and this is what I aim to use to my advantage to expand upon the fundamentals I have been given and create some work which is more imaginative to me.

You both expect being great at drawing NOW. While it usually takes many years. Your favourite artists most probably had to spend tons of time at drawing in order to achieve their current skill. The only program I'm aware of which really could limit you is MS Paint, since it lacks the most basic options like layers (but some people are still able to make amazing arts using it). Other apps are all good, they have all options you really need, you just have to know how to use them. You don't need Photoshop for drawing, you would never use most of its options anyway. Open source (so completely free) Krita is more than enough, especially since that program is intended for painting and drawing and it has quite many artistic brushes installed in default.

It's way easier to get good at art nowadays then when I started. There're tons of tutorials on the internet, including video ones. You can learn much just thanks to YouTube tutorials. There are also paid online courses for those you want invest some money, especially if they plan to make money from art. But even if you don't, there are plenty of free options as well. There's one guy from my country who is running a paid online course, but he has also a YouTube channel in which he is giving some tips completely for free, mostly about pencil drawings, but things you learn there could be useful in other techiques as well, including digital ones.

When you do digital art having a drawing tablet is highly recommend, not totally necessary, but it helps a lot. Not only because drawing using a stylus is much more easier (though it requires some practise) than using a finger or a computer mouse, but also because stylus reacts to pressure that's making drawing feeling more natural like in traditional techniques and it gives more options. But years ago I've been drawing using a mouse with decent results, it only required practise. This is an example what I have done using a mouse in March 2009 in open source app GIMP. I highly recommend investing in tablet, but you really don't need any expensive one with a screen to be good. Nowadays simple pen tablets are very cheap. Recently, my sister has bought one for her daughter, I've plugged it and installed a driver for her on a laptop, but from I've read in its manual it works with Android devices as well. It's much bigger and has more options than my Wacom Bamboo One (it has some buttons on the tablet itself, mine has zero) that I have bought almost 12 years ago and I'm still using (since it works well, I see no reason to change it).

Since I had many longs breaks from art in my life, I'm still not very good at it. I rather feel like I'm just starting since last year. I still struggle a lot, I can't draw properly many things I want. But I don't give up, because I understand I need more practise. Now I hardly even draw "seriously", because I'm trying to practise things with YouTube videos. Instead of just watching videos and trying to use tips I see in them on my own art, I'm trying to make exactly the same art what people on videos, following roughly their every step just for practise purpose. And it works much better to me, I'm learning much more during making exactly the same thing than when I'm trying to adapt it to my own art. I want to learn how to do semi-realistic digital painting of humans decently since I'm trying it but I'm still not satisfied with it despite all my attempts, this is why I'm copying art from that video. It doesn't matter I'm doing it on a desktop PC in a completely different application, I still can follow the same steps more or less, because core of most of the graphic programs those could be use for drawing/painting are roughly the same.

I love drawing and I always try to improve!! But I''ve been losing motivation lately because I try to draw stuff that might be pretty easy for other artists but I struggle with them A LOT.

I KNOW I shouldn't compare myself to others if it's gonna demotivate me but I just can't help it! I see other VERY talented people draw AMAZINGLY and feels so impossible to do and it makes me feel like I don't know how to draw at ALL

I also tried digital art but I don't get how people do it. Maybe it's because I don't have the best app? Most of the better digital art apps aren't free so I'm only limited to the free ones.

Plus I draw with my finger on my tablet.

And I installed a digital drawing app on my laptop but I suck at it. HOW DO PEOPLE DRAW ON A LAPTOP???

I just, need some motivation? And maybe some art tips?? I struggle THE MOST with fingers/hands and well drawing bodies. When I look at something and try to draw it exactly how it is I can do it! But drawing whatever I like (without it being a picture in front of me) is a HUGE challenge for me...

i totally feel you. im in the exact same boat! idk how other people perceive my skill level lol but i struggle A Lot! it takes me a lot of time and effort to get my art to a point that i feel okay about sharing it. even stuff that seems simple probably took me a while haha. and i know that feeling of looking at other really amazing artists and feeling kind of crushed that you can't be like them. it's really hard not to compare and get down on yourself. but since you're gonna be comparing anyway lol try to compare your work with your old work, to appreciate how far you've come! that helps me. i have some EXTREMELY cringey art still on my blog and you really don't have to go that far back in the tag to find it alskdfjaljsfd like stuff that im SUPER embarrassed about now but i can't bring myself to delete them bc it's kinda nice to be able to go back at say, "i was really proud of this drawing when i made it but wow, that is. Terrible. u know what u call that? ✨growth✨"

the truth is, there will always be people who are better than you at art, and that's ok! don't sweat it. art of various styles and skill levels can still be enjoyed. and you will only get better! my advice is to not put too much pressure on yourself. improvement will come naturally as you just keep drawing and try to have fun with it.

it's also helpful to keep in mind that you are not the only one who struggles or feels inadequate. i'd venture to say that most artists feel that way, even popular or highly skilled ones! recently an artist that i really admire and consider the biggest art goals told me that their finished drawings have many layers of sketches and corrections and experimentations underneath. art takes effort for everyone, even your art senpais! ofc, certain things will come easier as you get better, but good artists are always pushing for improvement and expanding their skills so you'll probably always feel a bit out of your comfort zone and it's good to try to develop a healthy mindset about growth/development now

hahaha i used to draw with my finger on my phone too before I got a drawing tablet. i prefer digital art because i totally abuse that undo button lol but it's fine if you prefer traditional art! i know some really amazing artists who do a lot of paper and pencil drawings—@tizzymcwizzy comes to mind!

Lol I also struggle with hands and bodies and I also have a super hard time drawing from my imagination! So I don’t 🤠 I use references for like every single thing I draw, and if you have to do that too, that’s ok! In fact, using refs is a good thing. Hopefully someday I won’t have to rely on them quite so heavily but using refs is always good practice! That’s how you learn what things look like and how to draw them lol.
