another strategy that's come up is more creative assessment design and more practical assignments and activities. think making a website instead of writing an essay, or having a 15minute 'interview' with your prof where you pick 3 out of 5 potential questions to answer instead of a written final exam. think in-class activities turned in for completion grades that you get to pick and choose from at the end of term to build a portfolio to write a learning reflection on.

most of the solutions being floated end up bringing learning back into the classroom and making it more engaging and less overwhelming for students, even if no one is necessarily referring to it exactly like that.

I value everyone’s opinions and was eager to hear what others identified as possible PoPs. While my colleagues had some great ideas, including how can we assess learning while staying true to our mission, how can we meet the needs of all students of varying ages, how can we measure the learning that is taking place, and how can we ensure that undergraduate students are getting the practice they need before they leave us, one stood out. How do we provide outdoor learning experiences for children with identified needs, including behavioral challenges? This problem feels very relevant and important. It is something that my colleagues and I would like to think about and come up with some solutions since we know outdoor learning is beneficial for students, that all students can learn outdoors, and that the best preschool and kindergarten programs are inclusive, providing programming for children with all types of needs and abilities.

There are two programs at our school that spend the majority of their day outdoors, in the garden, the forest, the creek, hiking or on the playground. The other programs spend a portion of their day outdoors in various spaces, but not nearly as much. We have provided outdoor learning experiences for several years and for many types of learners. We try our best to meet the needs of every student, while learning outside. Sometimes it is more challenging than others. We have had children who run from teachers, who have challenges with following directions, who are unsafe with tools and materials, who have sensory difficulties, who are impacted by weather/sounds/insects, who struggle with wearing gear for outdoor play, who fatigue easily, who need breaks, who need space, who need specific tools or materials that may not be available outdoors, and more.

My co-teacher and I, as well as the other nature-based teachers are invested in this problem. We want to be able to offer nature-based learning experiences and programming for all types of learners and not have to limit our acceptance or alter our schedule because we can’t meet their needs outdoors. This is important to our director also. She wants us to be able to teach the way that we feel is best for our group of learners, while maintaining inclusivity. If we can figure out solutions that will work for the types of learners we have had, we can encourage and support others who want to get all children outside.

HOW PoP MATCHES CITY”S 2011 DEFINITION

City defines a PoP as “something the school cares about, feels stuck

on, and wants to understand more deeply.” When I think about what we have identifies as our PoP, I agree that this matches with City’s definition. We care about providing quality care and education for our students, and that includes all of our students, regardless of their needs and abilities. We currently are trying to problem solve and find possible solutions, because we are stuck and haven’t been able to keep everyone safe outdoors or have felt scared or worried, and then we go back to indoors. It’s as if those four walls give us a sense of security that outdoors is not currently providing for us. This feels especially true for our children who leave the space/go past the boundary/are out of sight. In an indoor classroom there is a limited number of spaces they can go. Outdoors, we don’t have a physical boundary, there is a public trail, a parking lot close by, water and other potentially hazardous situations, if a child leaves the designated space. We want to know more about what we are currently do and may not realize, what others are doing, and how we can share with and learn from each other. City also said that a PoP “is observable and actionable.” I think that our PoP meets this criteria. Teachers and observers can see that we have to make changes to our practice to provide what is needed for learners with various needs, in an outdoor setting, so that we can provide developmentally appropriate, relevant and of interest instruction to every child in our program, while keeping everyone safe, and enjoying all the benefits of outdoor learning.
