Spell to gain control over a relationship that must last
This one is specifically for situations where there's a power dynamic or dependency, and you'd like to end that—while making the relationship last. This is for when you can't get out of a situation, but you want to gain control of it so it no longer harms you, or even to keep a relationship together and temporarily stop it from falling apart etc.
What you'll need: a puppet that can be filled with a little paper; a small paper+pen; a candle; small bowl; (storm-)water; cloves (or a substitute herb for control/domination); needle&thread (or other material you can use to fix your puppet); scissors; if possible, taglock of the other person & yourself
About the puppet: It can be made of fabric, leaves, even paper—all it needs is to be able to hold a small paper. Personally I make my puppets out of crochet, but other versions will work. If you use crochet or fabric, you'll need needle&thread. If you use paper, some tape will do instead. You get the drift—something you can use to repair the puppet. If you use tape, you will have to find a substitute for the water part of this. You could draw sigils of power onto the tape etc.
Ritual body:
Set up your space how you usually would—wether that be a ritual space, a circle, calling the elements, spirit guides, helpers, etc
construct your puppet
Take a small paper and draw on it an energy link between you and the other person. Can be as simple as their name on the top, your's on the bottom, and a line connecting the two. You can make it fancier with symbols, sigils, or other methods
Put this paper into your puppet
Speak the puppet into life and declare that it is the living relationship between you and [person]
Take your scissors, start cutting the puppet where the paper is stored in it while announcing that you are killing the puppet—and with it the relationship. With this action, the controlling connection at the core of this relationship is cut and the relationship dies
take out the paper and burn both parts. Put the ashes back into your puppet if possible
Take a bowl and fill it with (storm-)water and add cloves
Speak your intuition of control into the water while stirring it
Take your thread and cut off a long enough part, then let it soak in the water. Let the energy fill the thread
while it soaks, take a small paper and write all your frustrations that are part of this relationship on it and stuff it into one open part of your puppet
Take the two parts of your puppet and start sewing the puppet back together with the paper inside, while you announce that you are bringing the relationship back to life, and that it is now fully under your control and your frustrations are contained within it
Continue to speak your control over the relationship with every stitch until the puppet is fixed. Tie it off with a knot to finish the spell.
Optionally, you can add a clause that says that the relationship will fall apart as soon as the thread is cut if there's any possibility that you'll be able to leave this relationship behind in the past.
End your ritual if you made one, and then put your puppet in a place where no one will find it. As long as you don't touch it, the relationship will stay stable and connected, but you will be the one in control now.
Reminder that magick is not a substitute for professional help and I do not advocate for staying in abusive relationships. Stay save please.

WAIT MOE'S NIPPLE PIERCINGS. I COULD FEASIBLY DO THAT SAME EYEBROW PIERCING METHOD. Two barbells sticking out of a small area.......
It will REALLY depend on The Details, though. Like, Alfonse and Sharena don't have any skin on the bodies, because of the method I was thinking. Like. Initially, I wanted to have the shirt sewn to the pants, not on top. So, one layer of fabric, technically. Somehow, I still want to do this, but I'm not exactly sure how I'll get there... esp bc I ended up w whole bodies using the pants material anyway, for the sake of ease. (But.... maybe...... the undershirt material will be thin enough....... that I can get away w Not Doing All That ......)
But, I did the siblings this way because of how their outfits work. Both wear turtle neck undershirts (could be long sleeved, I think they are canonically actually. I somehow always imagined them as tee shirts though). Main point though, is their first layer of clothing covers up Everything. Then, they have the white long sleeved overshirts in their specific styles. THEN, they have a bodice on top. I do want their layers to be removable, but! On such a small scale, that many layers of fabric... just doesn't make sense to add that layer of realism, so to speak. Even if I do have a cute half thought of making their alt outfits....... but that's too much. I need to maintain my focus.
FOCUSING. So, the way the Askr siblings work. As of right now:
Body (all one part) -> Undershirt (presumably sewn on top -- not my intended method but I digress. Either way, it's not removable!) -> Overshirt (removable layer) -> Armor + all other flourishes (removable layer). Don't ask me how the arms will work I'm not there yet. Do NOT ask me about gloves either. Not there yet and I'm Worried about it.
Okay. Cut to Moe.
Moe's basic outfit consists of a low-cut form fitting tank top (almost like a camisole), another tank top over it (flowy-er, loose fit, the full length of it is like a tunic), roomy bloomer shorts, and tights underneath. We kind of have the opposite situation going on, at least on top! You see a bit of Moe's skin, even when it's got its robe on. So, already, I've been thinking Moe's body will have to look different than Alfonse and Sharena's, fabric wise.
The question IS....... well. How????? Good question. To be so real. HOWEVER. I am so self-indulgently in love w the concept of stitching on the littlest top surgery scars. This has been my mental image since day one, for Moe. It would be SO ridiculously cute. Which brings me back to the nipples. Oh my god. Ohhhhh my god............. if I did that little piercing method..... and did like one stitch of pink in the middle........ that would be SO. SO FUCKING SILLY. ANF SO FUCKING CUTE. it would have to be SO dependant on my methods and also would have to consider if it actually Looks good, you know. Like. That small of a scale, could look too busy/crowded. But.... BUT.......
A feasible hypothetical Moe build:
Body (skin layer, all details accounted for) / A possible underwear part sewn to the skin layer? So, same layer. Like I initially planned on for the siblings, with their shirt and pants. Put a pin here. -> Undershirt (low cut, fitted, but maybe removable...? It would be a shame to lock those features away...) -> Overshirt (removable)
And a split occurs. Actually. Because, the lower halves of Alfonse and Sharena's outfits are form fitting. I do wanna figure something out for Sharena's shorts. But, ultimately, I'm thinking one layer of fabric again. Esp the way the limbs will be attached -- jointed, ect. I can have the bottom of Sharena be the white fabric, one scrap of the skin toned fabric on the limb piece, and then the rest of the legwear (white fabric again). Probably adjust until it looks right and not like a wardrobe malfunction (tragically common occurrence among women of the Order of Heroes).
But, that pin? About a potential "underwear" layer for Moe. Could be black to match the tights! In canon (... my canon.) Moe's tights are sheer, so you'd be able to see what's underneath, but... here, we're mirco-organisming. We do NOT have the space for That Much Detail. So, opaque black tights. This way, I could use the same black material for the legs, like I did the white material for Alfonse's pants. All one layer!
Then you add the poofy bloomer shorts (technically removable) -> Then you have the robe (removable, final layer, like the armor/cape layer for Alfonse and Sharena)
Waahgh..... so... much..........
All of this is to say, Moe is going to be a more complex plushie structurally. The base of Moe allows for more detail work on the body, itself. Vs Alfonse and Sharena, where the bulk of their detail work is in their outfits/armor alone. Moe has a really distinct specific ass outfit too, but... it... may end up being simpler? (Here's hoping.)
Also something something it would be so fucking funny and charming. To give a plushie nipple piercings. That's SO fucking funny. And it would be SO stupid cute on Moe.
#my notes#my projects#????????? I NEVER KNOW OR REMEMBER HOW I TAG SHIT LIKE THIS.#still i was possessed w a mental image so strong i NEEDED. NEEDED. TO TALK ABOUT IT#moe tag#the thang.....#only moe could manage to pull this off. i think. also i'm just so obsessed. w the v concept of it.#like. inherently/commonly sexualized piercing on a little plushie. not accounting for anything specific here#these things do not go together.#the clash. the contradiction. that is SO on brand for moe. funny little guy.....

Cataract Surgery
Understanding Cataract Surgery: A Comprehensive Guide

What are Cataracts?
The natural lens of the eye, which is situated behind the iris and pupil, becomes clouded when a cataract occurs. To focus light on the retina and enable proper vision,Cataract Surgery Eye Care Specialistthe lens is essential. The aging process causes proteins in the lens to degrade and aggregate, resulting in areas of cloudiness that impair vision. Cataracts can affect one or both eyes and develop gradually. Though they are most frequently linked to aging, cataracts can also be brought on by trauma, certain drugs, or illnesses like diabetes.
Common Symptoms of Cataracts:
Blurred or cloudy vision
Difficulty seeing at night
Sensitivity to light and glare
Colors appearing faded or yellowed
Double vision in one eye
Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions
If left untreated, cataracts can lead to significant vision impairment and eventually blindness. Cataract surgery is the only effective way to treat cataracts and restore clear vision.
What is Cataract Surgery?
During cataract surgery, the naturally clouded lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL), a clean artificial lens. Millions of operations are carried out worldwide on this popular and effective surgical method every year.
The surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can go home the same day. The procedure is quick, usually lasting around 15–20 minutes per eye, and most people experience minimal discomfort.
Types of Cataract Surgery:
Phacoemulsification (Phaco): The most common type of cataract surgery, phacoemulsification involves making a tiny incision in the cornea and using ultrasound waves to break up the cataract. The pieces are then suctioned out, and the IOL is inserted into the eye. Because the incision is so small, it heals quickly, and stitches are rarely needed.
Extracapsular Cataract Surgery: This technique is used for more advanced cataracts where the lens is too dense to break up with ultrasound. A larger incision is made, and the clouded lens is removed in one piece. The IOL is then implanted, and the incision is stitched. Recovery time is longer with this method due to the larger incision.
Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery: This newer technology uses a laser to make precise incisions in the cornea, break up the cataract, and create openings in the lens capsule. Laser-assisted surgery is considered more accurate and may offer faster recovery and better visual outcomes for some patients.
Preparing for Cataract Surgery
To find out if you are a good candidate for cataract surgery and to evaluate the condition of your eyes, you will have a thorough eye exam performed prior to the procedure. Your eye surgeon will go over the specifics of the treatment and go over the many kinds of IOLs that are available. Selecting the appropriate IOL is crucial since it will affect your post-operative vision.
Types of Intraocular Lenses (IOLs):
Monofocal Lenses: These IOLs are designed to provide clear vision at a single distance, either near, intermediate, or far. Most patients with monofocal lenses will still need glasses for certain activities, such as reading or driving at night.
Multifocal Lenses: Multifocal IOLs can correct vision at multiple distances, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses after surgery. These lenses can improve both near and far vision, but they may cause some glare or halos around lights, especially at night.
Toric Lenses: For patients with astigmatism, toric IOLs are designed to correct both cataracts and astigmatism, providing clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses for distance vision.
Accommodating Lenses: These IOLs are designed to move within the eye, mimicking the natural lens and adjusting focus for near, intermediate, and distant vision. Accommodating lenses can reduce dependence on glasses, although they may not be as effective for very close vision.
Your eye surgeon will help you choose the best IOL based on your lifestyle, vision goals, and eye health.
The Day of Surgery
You will receive a local anesthetic to numb the eye and, in certain situations, a small sedative to help you relax on the day of the procedure. Best Eye Specialist Doctor in Delhi During the process, you won’t experience any discomfort, but you will be awake. What transpires during cataract surgery is as follows:
The surgeon makes a small incision in the cornea (the front surface of the eye).
Through this incision, the surgeon inserts a probe that uses ultrasound waves to break up the cloudy lens.
The lens fragments are then gently suctioned out.
The surgeon inserts the artificial IOL to replace the natural lens.
The incision is usually self-sealing, meaning no stitches are required.
The entire procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes. Afterward, you will be monitored in a recovery area for a short time before being discharged.
Recovery After Cataract Surgery
After cataract surgery, the majority of patients notice a noticeable improvement in their vision within a few days, however complete recovery may take many weeks. Your eye will require time to heal throughout the recovery phase, so your vision may change. Itching, minor discomfort, or the feeling that something is in your eye are possible symptoms, although they normally go away in a few days.
Tips for a Smooth Recovery:
Avoid rubbing or pressing on your eye.
Use the prescribed eye drops as directed to prevent infection and reduce inflammation.
Wear a protective shield or sunglasses to protect your eye from light and dust.
Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or bending over for at least a week.
Attend follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress.
While most people experience a smooth recovery, complications can occur. It’s important to watch for warning signs such as increased pain, redness, or a sudden loss of vision. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your surgeon immediately.
Risks and Complications
Although cataract surgery is considered one of the safest surgeries, it is not without risks. Possible complications include:
Infection: Rare but potentially serious, infections can occur in the days or weeks following surgery.
Swelling: Swelling of the cornea or retina may occur but usually resolves with medication.
Retinal Detachment: In rare cases, the retina may separate from the back of the eye, which requires urgent treatment.
Dislocated Lens: If the IOL moves out of position, additional surgery may be needed to reposition it.
Despite these risks, the vast majority of patients experience improved vision after cataract surgery and are very satisfied with the results.
Final Thoughts
A technique that can change a person’s lifeEye Specialist in Delhi can improve quality of life and restore good vision. Patients today have greater options and better results than in the past thanks to advanced surgical procedures and a variety of IOL solutions. Speak with an eye care specialist if you’re having cataract symptoms to find out if surgery is the best option for you. You may guarantee a speedy recovery and take pleasure in the advantages of improved eyesight for years to come by being aware of the method, getting ready for surgery, and adhering to the post-operative care guidelines.

❓ when reapers collect souls, they have to cut the body to view the cinematic records (correct me if I'm wrong). So, are cinematic records connected to the blood?
❓ for a general Kuro question
I’m not entirely sure how to answer this, since Undertaker tells our earl and Sebastian that the cinematic records are created and stored in the brain, basically as memories, and that they stay behind in the brain once the soul is removed from the body. And we know bizarre dolls are destroyed by destroying the brains that contain the cinematic records.
We also learn from Undertaker that the cinematic records are normally cut after “End” when a reaper decides to collect a soul.
The weird part about all this is that all reapers access the cinematic records (which are canonically stored in the brain) when they assess a person for collection (versus a “shinigami pass”), but only the bizarre dolls that Undertaker makes are shown to have stitches across their foreheads. The typical reaper method for collecting a soul is to hack into the body with whatever sort of death scythe they have. Even a lawnmower-modified one will get the job done.
If this is not some continuity mistake, then it means that cutting a body with a death scythe forces the cinematic records to pour out of the brain and through the fresh wound, regardless of where the body is cut, and the reaper can cut the records after “End.” Then, perhaps the remaining reel re-spools itself back into the brain? This seems to be the case, even when the soul isn’t collected. Sebastian’s cinematic records didn’t just fall out and get lost; they went back to where they came from. But they seem to come out where he’s been stabbed.
But if you want to access the cinematic records with minimal damage to the body, add film 🎞 to the reel, and then shove it all back in place... you would want to make an incision across the forehead. For direct access to the cinematic records’ source!
About the blood. 🤔 There is a blood-brain barrier in the human body, but perhaps the idea is that the cinematic records come out of the brain, cross that barrier, and follow the blood vessels to where the death scythe cut the body? Following the flow of that blood, drawn there by the “magic” of the death scythe?
There’s one other oddity: When William and Ronald work at Kelvin’s manor, the cinematic records seem to be coming out from bodies all over the place, without even needing a death scythe to access them.
Aha! I think I’ve got it. It depends on the specific situation. Here are three:
When people are dying from random causes, their cinematic records spill out from their brains and through their bodies until they find an exit: wounds, mouth, etc. The blood? It might not particularly matter. A person dying without blood loss should still start “playing” its cinematic records. Reapers can view the cinematic records without cutting the bodies, but they do use special scissors(?) to cut the film after “End.” Then they use the death scythe to collect the soul. So, they are only normally causing extra damage if they have decided to collect. If there is any chance of giving a “shinigami pass”, they probably view the cinematic records without causing any more damage. I don’t think you can save a human that has been cut with a death scythe.... It seems to actually release and possibly even capture the soul.
When a reaper is fighting a demon (when Sebastian gets injured by a death scythe) or flat-out killing a human (like Grelle killing Madam Red), they are going to strike with the death scythe to draw out the cinematic records. There’s no intention of giving a “shinigami pass” or anything, so the damage doesn’t matter.
When Undertaker is working on his bizarre dolls, those bodies are already dead, so their cinematic records have already returned to the brain. Simply striking the body with a death scythe isn’t going to force the cinematic records to pour back out. That’s why he has to take a more direct and surgical approach to accessing their cinematic records to add film. Then he’s probably got to manually shove it all back into place. Simply because a corpse doesn’t respond the same way as a dying body. Since a bizarre doll then acts like it’s alive again, Ronald is able to access their cinematic records by cutting them with his death scythe. But destroying the brain of a bizarre doll doesn’t release the cinematic records; it just destroys the records, too.

How To Make A Comfortable Binder For Less Than $10AUD
So, binders are expensive and hard to come by. Even when you do buy them, a lot of the time they put a lot of extra pressure on your ribs. I figured out a way to make one for cheap which is very similar to the gc2b design, except less expensive and more flexible depending on the materials you start with. For me, I don't have a super big chest so I don't really want a lot of compression (especially for daily wear) I just want something to hold my chest in a flat position. Assume any costs from here on out are in Australian Dollars ($1AUD is about 75c in American money I think).
What You'll Need
There are only three things you'll need to make this and they are:
A sports bra. It's very important you pick the right one. If you have one that fits the requirements you don't even really need to buy it, so you'll remove most of the cost of this method. Get one that's a very simple shape with no contouring, cupping, wires, etc. and make sure you have the correct band size. Ideally get one that doesn't put any pressure on your ribs at all, so it just fits around your middle without having to stretch. Don't worry about whether it compresses your chest at all. Ideally you'll get the one which has the most stretch possible for breathability so it probably won't do much at all. For example, I got this one which is a seam-free wire-free one from Kmart, it cost me $5.

Some cotton fabric. You can go to a fabric shop and get a square of 50cmx50cm for like $3 or less which should be enough to make one binder depending how big you need it. Personally, I bought a square metre for $7 in case I wanted to make more later.
A sewing machine (with thread). Theoretically you have one of these available to you in your home, but if you don't and you can't find a friend who has one or a public use one you can just hand sew it. The only downside to this is it will take longer. I actually hand stitched mine simply because I didn't want an audience and couldn't be bothered to wait until I was home alone to use the machine. Optional items include pins to hold everything in the right place while you sew, this makes things much easier if you're using a machine but if you don't have any its not a big deal. Another thing that's helpful is an ironing board, you almost definitely have access to one already. I won't detail specifics about how to use a sewing machine or hand sew in this tutorial, I just know the basics from high school, but you should be able to google it easily if you're unsure.
Method
1. Trace the shape of the front half of the sports bra onto the cotton. Stick near a corner of the fabric so you will end up with maximum fabric left over. You don't need to include the straps, just make a straight line that fits all the way across the top under the neckline, then follow the front curve of the straps and follow the side seams straight down to the bottom (you don't have to use exactly the front half of the bra that's just a guideline, if you want you can put the sports bra on and squish your chest flat or lie on your back and see where it sits. The edge of the cotton should end where it will still cover the bulge of your chest when squashed flat. The smaller the area of cotton the more breathable it will be.) and draw a straight line underneath the bottom. If you're planning to make multiple I'd recommend drawing the shape onto a piece of paper/cardboard, cutting it out and tracing it each time. The shape should end up looking something like the picture below.

2. Fold along the straight line at the bottom so the fabric is doubled over. Ideally you pin the fabric here to hold it in place but that's largely unnecessary if you're careful. Bonus points if you iron the fold in the fabric. Cut about 2cm (an inch i guess) away from the lines you drew earlier, but don't cut along the line you just folded. We want to double the shape so you have 2 layers of cotton. If you have thicker fabric or you don't want 2 layers thats fine as well, 2 will just be stronger (and it'll look neater at the end). You should end up with a cut of fabric that looks something like this, (although you should keep it folded for the next part of the tutorial):

3. Sew Along the lines where you traced the bra, leaving a gap at one of the side seams. I guess you don't really need to sew the bottom since it's already connected, so just one side and the top. You now have most of the edges sewed with a hole in one side. Cut the excess fabric diagonally at the corners so what you have looks something like this:

4. Turn it inside out using the hole you left in the side. Make sure all the corners are pushed out so it has the right shape, and don't forget to remove any pins before reversing it. You can iron it to make sure it's all flat if you want. Then fold the excess fabric thats likely sticking out of the hole into the inside of the hole. Ironing it will help hold it in place.

5. The last step is to sew this onto the front of the sports bra. Pinning it into place first will help. If you're using a sewing machine using the zigzag stitch might make it less likely to break and more flexible. The final product should look similar to this (you can also reverse it so the cotton is on the inside if you want):

If you have any questions or this wasn't clear let me know. This was designed to put minimum pressure on the ribs so it won't get you completely flat, but it's a good option if you have to bind regularly for long stretches of time, and its probably the most comfortable binder I own. I can't guarantee this will be effective for everyone because everyone's body is different.
Theoretically you should be able to machine wash this since it's just a sports bra and regular cotton but if you want to be careful you can put it on a gentle cold wash or hand wash it. If you're worried about shrinking that's generally something that happens during the drying process so you can either machine dry it on cold or hang it to dry. This ends up looking not much different to a regular bra so I doubt it would raise too many questions if your family found it, but you know your family and situation the best so exercise caution if owning something like this would put you in an unsafe position.
Even though this was designed to be gentle, follow the usual binding safety guidelines. Wear it for the minimum time possible and take breaks as often as possible. Remove it if you feel any pain or have trouble breathing. Nothing I've written in this post is intended as medical advice, and you should follow this tutorial at your own risk. If you injure yourself with a binder made from these instructions I will not be responsible. See a doctor if you have any concerns.
There's no pressure for anyone to reblog this, but if you want to it might help a trans person or even just someone who wants to bind for cosplay or whatever.
EDIT: When I made this post originally, I had the cotton sewn all the way down the front, including over the elastic. Not only is this unnecessary, but also kind of uncomfortable. I now recommend that you sew it so the cotton ends just above the elastic, like this;

Blast to the Past: Planescape Torment tutorial
Ok so if we really want to talk about
Now planescape torment as a game is mostly strongest in the start, the game reaches its peak once you leave for the Outlands and doesn’t really recover until the very end at the return to Sigil, something which I wish the enhanced edition would have fixed. But I think one of the reasons why this game is so beloved is in large part due to its strong opening. And whats funny at first is that it is actually closer in structure to the Pathfinder:Kingmaker situation than the Baldur’s Gate I opening. You awake in a crisis and need to escape from a building with different rooms having different mechanics be introduced. And while it is a lot faster if you don’t do the sidequests, you can’t just finish the tutorial in 5 mins the way you can with Candlekeep. Despite that, I think Planescape surpassing even Baldur’s Gate in its opening. Lets talk about why
1) Aesthetic. One of the most powerful thing about Planescape is that it has a very specific art direction, one which I have not seen in any fantasy before or sense, this philosopher hobo view of cosmic metaphor. While PS:T is undeniably part of the D&D universe and is just as much fantasy as Baldur’s Gate, it feels wholly unlike the former, even though both games are canon in the same universe. The game specifically removes most of the trappings of fantasy, there is a single sword and a single suit of armor in the whole game (the suit of armor is a companion), there are not dragons, there are no goblins/orcs/giants/drow/Mind flayers, you never explore ancient ruins of a lost civilization or restore a monarchy, you don’t even defend a village from monsters.
This game abandons the conventional trappings of fantasy instead having an aesthetic of...well a slum. Your initial weapons include an iron spike, a scalpel, a plybar, a severed arm, and a crunch, you travel to sewers and are murdered in like 40 different ways. And the Morgue is an absolutely great to place to set the tone, the whole place is full of images of emboldening fluid, dissected corpses, and body parts, but rather than being used to be creepy or evil it is actually rather nice. They aren’t enemies to be destroyed...they are you. This place of corpses and preservatives is where you belong, because you are after all, a corpse who keeps refusing to die.
2) it sets the tone, specifically in not judging a book by its cover. The Mortuary could easily have been a sinister realm of necromancers with their zombie servants doing experiments among the dead, but the tutorial puts you in the framework of not assuming that the sinister is evil. A floating skull can be your friend, you don’t have to attack the zombies, and the weird necromancers in robes talking about True Deaths are just stoic goths. In a Planescape setting and especially in a game that is as role-play heavy as this one, it is important to communicate to the player that they need to take the weird stuff on its surface rather than assume things are going to follow a standard fantasy storylines. Maybe the two demon ladies can be your friend, maybe its best to talk to the creepy hag, assumptions will not help you in this game
3) Its not entirely linear. A lot of the content is optional If you want, you can get through this tutorial in maybe 10-15 mins if you skip the side content. Also much of the content has multiple resolutions depending on your play style, making it much more an example of self expression rather than “I need to pick the locks now”
4) It is an actual story segement. My issue with Kingmaker or Bloodlines is that the tutorial is just....a place you learn the mechanics and nothing more, while the Morgue is directly related to the plot of Planescape. You need to learn about yourself as the Nameless One, you get to meet and learn about Morte, you meet Dhall and find out more aobut the story, You meet Deionarra, and most importantly where you wake up is also the entrance of the final boss. The Tutorial level is absolutely necessary to understand the story of the game and is infact more necessary than the whole Curst nonsense. \
5) It establishes the mechanics. Despite using the same engine and being set in the same universe as Baldur’s Gate, the experience is totally different in terms of gameplay. PS:T needs to introduce how important dialogue options are, that your stats can effect the various conversions, that you are immortal and that htis game has a much more visual novel/adventure game feel to it than the more combat oriented BG. lets contrast some points real quick
In Candlekeep, you have to do an errant for a guy and normally he gives you some money but in one of my playthroughs he gave me a +1 dagger. I didn’t know why the difference until I looked it up and was like “oh I had 18 charisma”. Meanwhile planescape torment, it informs you about the different stat and their effect on dialogue in order to let players know to plan their stats accordingly
To use another example, in the Mortuary there are a bunch of giant skeletons chilling around in the upper level. In BG that would be a challenge to defeat, but in PS:T, talking to them while having this one book and a high enough Int means you can deactivate them, getting XP for each one and looking their armor to learn spells. This is going to be a hallmark of PS:T and it is established here
The fact that you can get through this whole level only killing a single zombie is right away a major different from BG, where you kill like 90% of the cast.
6) It sets the tone of Planescape. One of the reasons why this game is so beloved is that PS:T kinda delivers on the RPG promise. There are like 20 zombies in this level and almost all of them has a different way of interacting with them and unique appearance. One of them has stitches that you can cut with a scapel to find a not, one is holding a book, one losses its arm that you can lose as a club, there is a zombie who is actually a human spy dressed up as a zombie (who can dress you up too) almost everything in this level has a unique method of interactivity, and that is before Morte tries to hit on them. Honestly one of hte failings of PS:T is that no other part of the game is as interactive as this particular level.
7) You can return to the Motuary throughout the rest of the game, making this place useful. Even if you do every single side-quest you can first time through, there will still be more to do. You come back here when you die, you need to go here for the final dungeon, some quests take you but most critically there is a whole zombie sidequest here. later in the game a crying zombie will give you the power to talk to the dead. If you think of it, you can return to this place and talk to every single zombie here, each of whom has their own story, a few of which are quite elaborate, and one of them is your old buddy who has some items for you.
In short, PS:T is to me the ideal RPG tutorial (though I do wish I could get through it a bit faster on a second play-through) because it feels like an actual part of the game rather than simply “the part where you do the mechanics”
Next time I might finally talk about why the tutorial for Pathfinder;Kingmaker is so bad...but I might not bother, its boring.

Talents Chapter 7
It took some time but here is the next part of Talents! It’s also up on AO3 under Rumo(Triteia).
Also Warnings: Mention of Death, Torture and major injuries
Tinker awoke to darkness. Everything around him was dulled and strangely slow. His eyes fluttered open to an unfamiliar room where he was covered in pristine white sheets. He tried to lift his head to look around but a bright pain in his shoulder kept him glued to the soft mattress. Immediately, someone grabbed his hand and ran soothing circles over his palm. Tink opened his mouth to say something though he was shushed by a familiar voice almost momentarily. “It’s okay, we are back home. You are with the healers, but they say it will get better soon.”
A concerned looking face framed with long white hair appeared in his view. The teal eyes seemed to assess him thoroughly before Runaan faintly nodded to himself. “Naan…” the smith started but was instantly interrupted again. “Do you remember what happened?”
The question sent him drowning in a flood of memories that suddenly appeared in his consciousness, dragging him down with them and back into the human dungeons and their horrible methods. With a sharp gasp, Tinker shot up into a sitting position only to curl in on himself straight away. He couldn’t suppress the hiss that escaped his lips at the throbbing ache which bloomed in the general area of his ribs. The Assassin gently, if firmly, pushed him back down and fixed the blankets in place. “So, I take it you do. I need you to tell me everything you know about the human stronghold and it’s defences.”
“Why?” Tinker hated how gravelly his voice sounded but was glad all the same that it didn’t fail him at all. “Your rescue was, let’s say, a difficult situation. I could convince the council to launch a rescue mission but only if there was a real chance to bring you back. Otherwise I was to leave you there.” He noticed how Runaan’s voice changed from concerned to somewhat pained. The little creases he’d come to know as worry lines appeared on the other’s forehead, disturbing the stern features.
“I take it the chances weren’t good then?” In truth he didn’t need to ask the look on the Assassin’s face already told him enough. “I did get you out, didn’t I?” a slight smirk appeared in the corner of his mouth but quickly vanished as Runaan straightened in his seat. Just now, Tink realized he wore the ceremonial armour that classified him as second in command of the Assassin’s squadron. An uncommon choice for a hospital visit. His musings were interrupted as the tall elf spoke once again, voice now matter-of-factly. “You could say the casualties were high enough that the council decided my rescue attempt wasn’t as safe a bet as I tried to make them believe. They want to debrief thoroughly today to determine whether I went against their orders. It would help me to build a case should you remember anything specific that could aid us in coming missions besides the obvious holes in defence I used to get in.”
“Did you get injured?” the thought suddenly crossed his mind as he continued to take in the other’s appearance. Tinker could see him moving a little stiffer than usual and several bandages peaked out under the layered cloth and armour. “Don’t lie to me.” He added before the Assassin could answer him. What followed was a long but very detailed list of injuries, sorted from worst to most shallow that he rattled down like a grocery list. The smith felt a sensation between worry and amusement at the unconcerned display. At his request the other even opened his tunic and showed him the neatly wrapped injuries on his upper body. Seemingly satisfied, Tink sank back into his pillow and thought about the question he’d asked. “I couldn’t really get a glimpse of the defence mechanisms, but I am sure I could draw you an accurate map of the parts of the castle they took me to. They dragged me around a lot because their lieutenant wanted to talk to me a few times.”
The statement got him a wide-eyed look from his counterpart. “How long would that take you? Approximately?”
He shrugged, abandoning the motion halfway through. “Maybe ten, twenty minutes? Depending on ho detailed you need it.” In a flurry of dark blue cloth and white hair, Runaan rushed to the door. “Let me just get parchment. Think about anything else you can remember while I’m gone.”
The Assassin returned shortly after with charcoals and s couple of large paper sheets. “I have an hour before I need to make my appearance at the council. Please try to remember as much as you can.”
Tink started to sketch out the lower level of the castle right away, working his way to the top and the towers sheet per sheet. The humans had brought him to almost every part of the stronghold since he was questioned by different people and they moved him around a lot presumably to make it harder for him to escape. At the same time, they had given him access to the majority of chambers and hallways. He was careful to only draw the parts he was sure that were there and added the things he assumed to be bordering the areas he’s been in with thinner doted lines. “How can you remember the layout so well?” Runaan had been quiet for the most part of the last twenty minutes, simply watching him with increasing interest. “I walked some of the way…” he then pointed at the hallways they used to get out. “…but I couldn’t for the life of me draw a whole layout of the place. Sure, I could find the way we went but the map you drew is just huge.”
Finishing off the last hallways, the smith returned the charcoals and pushed his hair back with his uninjured arm. The chuckle of his boyfriend told him he’d probably been leaving coal streaks on his face in the process. “I don’t know. I just need to see things once to remember them good enough to sketch them afterwards. Varou says it’s called an eidetic memory.”
“Well, it’s an exceptional skill and will probably safe my Job.” With that, the long-haired elf stood up from his seat on the edge of the cot and began to collect the various parchments strewn around them. Some of them also showed mechanical sketches of the human’s catapults and other weaponry where they had been stationed inside the fortress.
Just as he’d gathered everything, Tink could see Varou stepping through the door. The old elf looked exhausted but all the while happy to see him. “I will be back as soon as I can.” Runaan stated and exchanged a few whispered words with his mentor before walking out the door with long, purposeful strides.
“How are you feeling?” Varou took a seat where the Assassin had sat just moments ago and mustered him with the same assessing glance the other had used before. “I’m okay, I guess. The shoulder and my ribs hurt but Runaan said it will probably heal completely.”
“You know, that was not what I meant. Are you okay? Your boyfriend didn’t really talk about much. The nurse had to practically drag him from your bedside and pin him down afterwards to stitch him up. Otherwise I’m sure I could have scraped him from the floor due to the blood loss a couple hours later. Stubborn bastard you got there.” Somehow the statement sounded almost endearing. Tink was sure he liked Runaan even though the smith like to play protective of him.
“I’m not fine but I will get there in time. Sadly, my memory is excellent. How badly was he hurt? When I asked before I just got a list of injuries but that doesn’t really tell me anything besides the fact that half of his skin must have been peeled off by blades.”Varou chuckled a little, glad that his apprentice apparently managed to keep his humour despite the near-death experience.
“This may sound harsh but compared to him you looked peachy and you were the unconscious one. Though I must say the poker face he’s got going on is impressive. Half of the people probably didn’t realise he had more than a few scratches. Given the state of both your clothes it was really hard to tell whose blood it was though. I his case I would guess most of it was human. The dual swords were practically re-coloured. Can you tell me how that happened?” Tink had to shake his head. He’d only been present for a small part of the fighting. “Not really, no. He told me to climb down the castle wall so I didn’t really see anything. I used the time he needed to catch up to heal a few of my wounds.”
“That probably saved your life. The healers said you wouldn’t have made it far with the scars they found. Good thing your magic is that efficient.” He added some stories from the shop after that and Tink could feel him trying to change the subject. Glad of the diversion, he listened to the gossip and occasionally asked for more information.
After a while, their conversation came to halt once Varou finished his report of the new things he’d made in his absence. “I’m glad you made it back.” He took Tinkers hand in his calloused ones and looked him in the eye before continuing. “Both of you.”
His throat tightened at that and he felt tears welling up in his eyes, blurring his vision. “So am I.”
“Do you think he will be okay?” Varou had to think of the devastated figure he’d witnessed in his workshop before Runaan ran off on this suicide mission and the change he went through while stepping through the door of his shop on the way out. From panicked, emotional wreck to composed general, although he did see the mask cracking ever so slightly as they bid their goodbyes. Then, when the Assassin returned with his apprentice that the old elf loved like a son, he’d looked like the raging fury still lurked beneath his skin and just waited to break through. His tone had been sharper, more commandeering than usual as Runaan had called for a healer, a hint of panic carrying in his voice. The main reason he had helped to clear path wasn’t his concern for their speedy arrival, the long-haired elf had been almost running, but the safety of his fellow elves shouldn’t they manage to free the way fast enough.
The Adrenaline down once they’d carried Tinker to the healers was concerning to say the least. He had to refrain himself from jumping up and out of his seat every time the other stumbled because he was afraid to startle Runaan, who then looked like a cornered animal.
“I’m not sure.”
I hope you enjoyed it! More will come soon:)
I’m very ecxited for Season 2 and hope that we finally learn Tinkers name so I can replace it in all my stories -_-

Dental Crowns
According to medical statistics, around the world, only 20% of people can boast that they have completely healthy teeth. In Russia, according to experts, the situation is even worse. Many people go to the doctor at the very last moment, when it is too late to treat a bad tooth — they have to remove it.
The lack of teeth greatly spoils the appearance. How to solve this problem? The most modern method of dental prosthetics is implantation. What is it? What is the advantage of implantation over other methods? How to choose the right dental clinic for treatment? What is a dental implant? These and other questions are answered by the doctor of medical sciences, professor, surgeon-implantologist Bychkov A. I.
– Alexey Igorevich, what is the difference between dental implants and more archaic methods of prosthetics?
Let’s say a patient has one tooth missing and wants to get a prosthesis. If you do it the old-fashioned way, you need to sharpen two adjacent teeth, remove the nerves, seal the channels and make a bridge. Thus, the prosthesis is held on the adjacent sharpened teeth. In fact, during the procedure, the adjacent teeth are simply killed, become dead. It is believed that because of this, they then fall out faster. Restoring one tooth, a person risks losing three at once after a while.
– An unpleasant prospect…
Yes, but fortunately, there is an alternative. You can not spoil the neighboring healthy teeth, and put a dental implant.
– Probably, a dental implant is expensive?
The installation of a single implant is more expensive than the procedure for installing a bridge with the turning of adjacent teeth. But here the patient must decide which option to choose.
– Tell us in more detail, what is a dental implant?
An iplant is a kind of titanium screw that is installed in the bone tissue of the jaw. Inside the implant is hollow, there is also a thread. After the implant “takes root”, fuses with the bone, the inner plug is unscrewed from it, and in its place the abatman – head is inserted, which is fixed with a screw. Well, then a ceramic crown is installed on this head.
The operation to install the implant itself takes about 20 minutes, but you can only put the abutment and crown after a certain period of time (from 2.5 to 6 months).
– Alexey Igorevich, what are the types of prosthetics on implants?
Implants can be used in all types of prosthetics. But in general, a dental implant can be divided into two groups: removable and non-removable. The non-removable design is simple: the ceramic crown is installed on the implant head. The removable design is more complicated: the implant is fixed to the so-called beam, the mount on which the prosthesis snaps.
— Is the fixed implant design fixed permanently?
Not necessarily. You can not glue the ceramic crown to the head, but fix it with a small screw. Then the design will be completely collapsible: if there is any problem with the crown, you can remove it by unscrewing a small screw, and then remove the head by unscrewing another screw. Only the implant itself, which is attached to the bone tissue, remains rigidly fixed. Usually, once every 5-6 years, the entire structure requires a small correction, which can easily be done if it is completely collapsible.
– It turns out that the non-removable collapsible design of the dental implant is most convenient. In what cases are removable dentures used?
Removable structures are usually placed on a completely toothless jaw. If you make implants with ceramics instead of all the missing teeth, it will be very expensive. But you can put 4 implants, install a beam structure on them, and removable dentures on top — this will be much cheaper. Also, the beam design is suitable for those who do not want or do not have the opportunity to immediately install more expensive fixed prostheses. In this case, a removable beam structure is an intermediate option: after a while, the patient can again come to the surgeon and easily replace the removable prostheses with non-removable ones.
In short, there are no special medical indications for the installation of removable dentures, but this is a more budget option.
— Do some dental clinics offer membrane implantation? What is it?
The membrane is a kind of patch that fits under the gum to close a bone defect or to isolate the material that we have implanted there. For example, an implant. In a normal situation, immediately after the implant is installed, the doctor simply stitches the gum over it. But sometimes its volume is not enough, and then it is necessary to implant the membrane to create an additional barrier, to prevent food residues, microbes, etc. from entering the surgical site.
— Are all the membranes the same?”
No. There are a great many types of membranes, but they are all divided into two types: resorbed and non-resorbed. The first ones resolve after a certain period of time, the second ones do not. Resorbed membranes are divided into several categories: some dissolve after a few weeks, others – after a few months. Nonresorbable membranes are usually based on a thin titanium mesh, which gives them a shape.
— In which cases do you need the membrane to dissolve, and in which cases it does not?
It all depends on the specific clinical case. If the doctor knows that this place will be subjected to loads in the future (for example, while chewing food), it is better to put a membrane with a titanium mesh, so that there is a frame.
– Is membrane implantation only used in addition to dental implantation?
No, the implantation of the membrane is also very effective in periodontal disease, when the patient’s tooth or teeth acquire mobility: they do not fall out yet, but the amount of bone tissue around begins to decrease. In order to strengthen the tooth, artificial bone tissue is inserted into the weak spot. Well, in order for it not to be washed out from under the gums, a membrane is placed on top, which creates a certain frame.
Thus, the membrane performs two functions: it protects the material that we planted from resorption, and also forms the volume of bone tissue that was lost during the disease.
– Is the implantation of the membrane expensive?
Let’s just say it’s not the cheapest. The membrane itself is quite expensive, and its implantation requires the skill of a surgeon, so not all clinics offer this service. But I believe that in this case, the savings can go sideways. If the bone tissue that we plant is simply washed out without a membrane, the entire procedure will have to be performed again. How to choose a clinic
– Alexey Igorevich, let’s go back to dental implants. Today, many Moscow dental clinics undertake to put implants, I constantly see a lot of advertisements. How can the patient make the right choice?
Yes, now only a lazy dentist does not offer to put implants. Almost every house has a sign “Dentistry”, which offers these services. Indeed, it is difficult to navigate. I would advise, first of all, to come to a preliminary consultation in the clinic that interests you. Already by the way the consultation will take place, much will become clear. In our clinic (and indeed in any good clinic), a consultation before the installation of implants is conducted by a medical consultation. The fact is that one surgeon can not make serious decisions, he only needs to assess whether the volume of bone tissue is sufficient for implantation surgery. The main questions are solved by the dentist-prosthetist, who, after looking at the adjacent teeth, determines what kind of design will turn out if you put the implant. Only after the patient, the surgeon and the prosthetist discuss all the options together and come to a common decision, you can already do something. If at the first appointment you are immediately offered to operate, it is better to look for another clinic and not risk your health.
— Does the technical equipment of the clinic matter?
To install implants, you need either a normal operating room or a special office, which is close to it in terms of equipment. In the “Aristocrat-Dent”, there is a separate well-equipped surgical room, designed specifically for operations. Not everyone can afford it, in some clinics, therapists work in surgical offices in their spare time, so that the carious dust flies in the air, settles on the walls, in short, there is no question of sterility necessary for operations. “Aristocrat-Dent” does not allow anything like this in the surgical office.
— How can a simple patient determine how good a surgical room is for operations?
Very simple. Ask for permission documents for surgical activities. Many clinics perform surgical operations, but at the same time do not have a license for surgical activity, because to obtain it, all conditions must meet fairly strict requirements (modern equipment, qualified support staff, etc.). Patients do not always pay attention to this, but in vain. When choosing a clinic, it is necessary to find out whether it has the required licenses, usually they are posted in the corridor or hall. By the way, such licenses need to be renewed at least once every five years, so the validity period on the document is also worth checking.

How Much Does A Skin Biopsy Cost
New Post has been published on https://skin-care-routine.com/skin-care-routine/how-much-does-a-skin-biopsy-cost/
How Much Does A Skin Biopsy Cost
A. Skin Biopsy
1. How much does a skin biopsy cost?
At MDsave, the cost of a skin biopsy ranges from $ 212 to $ 414. People with a high deductible or without insurance can shop, compare prices and save.
2. What is a biopsy?
Biopsy is a medical diagnostic procedure that involves taking a sample of cells or tissue so that a pathologist can examine it under a microscope. Pathologists are specialists trained to examine samples of cells or tissues under a microscope to detect any signs or extent of a specific disease. There are several types of biopsies, including scraping, puncture biopsies, endoscopic biopsies, needle biopsies, capsular biopsies, coposcopic biopsies and stereotactic biopsies. Excisional biopsy, a type of biopsy, involves surgical removal of a target area or nodule rather than just testing the sample.
3. Why is it used?
Although there are several medical tests that can be used for diagnostic purposes, there are reasons why biopsy is the best option. When an abnormality is known to exist, such as a tumor or skin lesion, a biopsy is often the best way to carefully examine tissue or cells and diagnose the underlying problem. Another reason it is beneficial is that some problems can be completely eliminated by biopsy, such as: B. Skin cancer. This eliminates the need for other, more invasive surgical procedures.
4. What conditions does it deal with?
The biopsy can be used to diagnose the disease or to test for tissue compliance before transplantation. Doctors recommend biopsy procedures for bone infections, bone cancer, breast nodules, endometrial tissue problems, kidney failure or inflammation of the kidneys, lung and breast nodules, abnormalities in the lymph nodes, testicular abnormalities, thyroid nodules, skin changes or growths, such as spotting abnormal and minor nerve damage. Different types of biopsies may be suitable for specific purposes, e.g. B. Puncture biopsies for skin cancer and needle biopsies for thyroid nodules.
B. Skin Biopsy: Treatment, Procedure, Cost And Side Effects
What is the treatment? How is the treatment done? Who is entitled to treatment? (When does treatment end?) Who is not entitled to treatment? Are there any side effects? What are the guidelines for follow-up treatment? How long does recovery take? What is the price of treatment in India? Are the results of the treatment permanent?
1. What is the treatment?
Skin biopsy is a process in which part of the skin tissue is removed, processed and then examined under a microscope. If there is an injury to the skin, a tissue sample is removed from that area of the skin to be tested for possible abnormalities. Various methods can be used, depending on the location and size of the lesion. The sample tissue is then placed in a formaldehyde solution or a sterile container if infection is suspected. The tissue is processed in this way and then examined under a microscope.
Ideally, if any part of the skin changes color, size, shape or appearance abnormally or does not heal much after an injury, a skin biopsy should be performed. The procedure is mainly used to diagnose skin cancer. A skin lesion biopsy can also diagnose skin conditions, such as psoriasis and a fungal or bacterial infection. If you notice something abnormal on your skin over a skin lesion, don’t ignore it and check it as soon as possible to identify skin cancer that can lead to early treatment.
2. How is the treatment done?
The skin area from which the sample tissue would be collected are low alcohol wipes. Sometimes, a marker is also used to mark the specific area. The method of obtaining the skin sample depends on the location and size of the lesion. There are three main ways to perform a skin biopsy: scrape biopsy, puncture biopsy and excision.
Shaving biopsy: in this procedure, the tissue sample is collected when that part of the skin is under local anesthesia. The sample tissue is then scraped with a scalpel. No stitches are needed to heal the area. In case of bleeding, a chemical is used to control it. A sterile surgical drape is then used to keep the biopsy site covered.
Puncture biopsy: also in this process, the tissue sample is removed under local anesthesia. A small, sharp tool called a puncture, which resembles a cookie cutter, is positioned on the skin lesion, pushed down and then turned slightly to create a circular patch of skin. The skin sample is removed from the tissue with a needle or forceps. Some stitches may be needed after a large sample of skin is removed and pressure is applied to stop bleeding. A sterile dressing or bandage is used to cover the biopsy site.
Excision: here, too, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Here, a scalpel is used to remove the entire lesion. A skin graft is required for large excisions and the biopsy site is then covered with a sterile dressing.
4. Who is entitled to treatment? (When does treatment end?)
A person should have a skin biopsy whenever they discover an injury or area of skin that has changed abnormally for no apparent reason. A skin lesion biopsy can detect a skin disease like psoriasis and something as dangerous as skin cancer. If skin cancer is detected early, it can be treated as a priority and, in some cases, completely cured.
5. Who is not entitled to treatment?
Anyone with an atypical skin lesion can have a skin biopsy. However, there are some factors that the doctor must know before the procedure is performed. If a person is taking anti-inflammatories or corticosteroids, the doctor should know about them, as in these cases the biopsy results may be inaccurate. As a skin biopsy involves cutting the skin, the patient must also inform the doctor of any bleeding problems or if they are taking blood thinning medications, such as aspirin or warfarin. And the patient has to inform the doctor if she is pregnant.
6. Are there any side effects?
Although this is very unlikely, the patient can be susceptible to infection at the biopsy site and also have a very low risk of continuous bleeding. The patient may form a scar at the biopsy site.
7. What are the guidelines for follow-up treatment?
The patient should take good care of the biopsy site until it is completely cured and keep it dry and clean. The stitches are removed a few days after surgery and the sterile dressing or bandage is left in place for about two weeks before falling off on its own. Patients usually develop a fever immediately after a skin biopsy and there may also be swelling, redness and pain at the biopsy site. Although it is normal for the biopsy site to bleed for some time, if there is excessive bleeding, the patient should contact the doctor immediately.
8. How long does recovery take?
The biopsy site will heal completely in 2-3 weeks if the patient strictly follows the guidelines for follow-up treatment.
9. What is the price of treatment in India?
The cost of the procedure may vary. However, the average price in India is between 600 and 2600 rupees.
10. Are the results of the treatment permanent?
A skin lesion biopsy can leave scars at the biopsy site and its duration varies from person to person.
C. How much should/could this pathology cost? (Skin cancer biopsies)
I’ll start with three explanations because sometimes people don’t read footnotes.
I am NOT saying that something is wrong here – don’t assume it is a path of war every time I blog. 🙂 I just ask a question. My guiding principle in medical costs and treatments is that people know what their options are. That is why I present my situation and ask.
I also DO NOT ask for treatment advice – I just ask about the cost and whether it sometimes makes sense to do the pathology elsewhere. (We have already talked about treatments and I am happy.)
As I said before, I don’t recommend anyone to act the way I want.
Regular readers also know that as a retired cancer patient in New Hampshire, my insurance options were limited and I opted for a $ 10,000 deductible, so it all comes out of my pocket. As I have written on the blog several times, this is a great way to find out how money is really flowing into American health, which is usually very difficult to find out.

Front End style guides have already been well publicised recently, with many examples being made readily available for all to see. They are a popular and way that is effective of usage guidelines for Interfaces that stick to an agreed upon design ethic. They allow you to speed up, maintain, and keep UI consistency. At BigCommerce, we have started to take into account the simplest way we could implement something similar that would help us achieve those goals. Style guides inside our experience fail the majority of the right time because they become stale reference sites that people copy and paste from but never update. They can be too loose, and permit freedom that is too much effectively you skin Bootstrap and everyone thinks they're a designer. There are many situations needless to say, where you are fortunate enough in order to dedicate resources and a united team to solely taking care of your style guide and shaping its direction. Many of us aren't that lucky, but if by some miracle you manage it, the following most likely thing that will ruin all your dreams is mutations. Deficiencies in an integration that is effective may cause your style guide to become obsolete, as teams will deviate from your agreed approach, making any upgrade path impossible. These mutations most of the time appear as it's not that hard to copy, paste, add an CSS that is additional class a component and produce some variation of it from the core library. Usually the excuse is "it didn't quite feel right", or "simply because" but this has a significant effect that is detrimental your capability to maintain a consistent look and feel, and familiar interaction patterns in the application or website; particularly if you are working with hundreds of pages. Those small mutations mean any significant change to a component will not roll out. The changes you've made will mean new upstream CSS changes will not take effect as a result of cascade and you will quickly create fragmentation and a frankenstein of an interface, introducing technical and design debt to the body. This essentially contributes to the origin regarding the naming - a Laboratory, not a Library. This takes a complete lot of inspiration from the Pattern Lab project and also the Atomic Design system. Essentially, this plain thing should live. It shouldn't just be a library piece; something that sits on the design departments shelf to now look at every after which. It must be constantly worked on and iterated over. It should enable us to push ideas that are new our design patterns to the app quickly and easily, which means it's necessary that we deal in and produce production code. That production code is not just used to create the pattern-lab itself, but in addition the application form it describes.

A single supply of truth, that which you see is exactly what's in production and what the Engineers on your own team are employing. A Pattern-Lab is a couple of very well defined, strict guidelines and patterns designed solely for a really domain that is specific. It is not a one-size fits all framework to build something BigCommerce-esque, but a razor-sharp, narrow focused toolkit to create a part that is particular of BigCommerce eco-system; in particular, for our Control Panel. We specifically wanted to lay out that if an interior team was building something that's not the control interface, and they found they certainly were missing significant chunks of UI, as opposed to doing a hack job they might benefit from building their particular Pattern-Lab for that domain that is specific. A Pattern-Lab is made to only have what we wish the delivery teams to have to construct that domain. Nothing more, and hopefully nothing less. We intend to build a Pattern-Lab to serve each domain separately, as they will all have different design aesthetics predicated on their purpose, but most likely a really set that is similar of components and patterns. That's where Citadel, our CSS framework, comes into play. More on that in another post. A Pattern-Lab probably get's you 90% of this means for each domain, but that isn't to express a Pattern-Lab is inflexible. Product Managers and Designers love a "Snowflake", so we expose all the global and component maps, variables and mixins, with their corresponding Pattern-Lab "theme", to enable a consuming app the capacity to build custom Components, which look right at home and on brand with all the wider app domain. A Pattern-Lab is a joint effort between the look team and engineering, however it is most certainly not an engineering tool. It ought to be owned and lead by the style team. The Pattern-Lab should not just be a documentation site where engineers pick out code snippets, although code snippets are included. It will range from the design thinking and language behind the "why" and also the "when" a pattern that is particular be utilized. You should use a certain level of alert, the situations it's appropriate to use a modal etc why you should use a colour for a certain situation, when. Other areas worth considering are defined animations and rules around how and when to make use of them into the application or interaction. Again, the Pattern-Lab should describe just how to build the greatest experience that is possible our product as well as for that to be a success, it takes rules around how to use it. Think about it as an use that is appropriate, or an interaction playbook.

We are not quite there yet, but we're well on our option to defining a design that is solid and guidelines on how to implement it inside our app. The task by Lonely Planet on their "living style guide" Rizzo, seems like the natural progression in the style guide world, so we set about defining a way we currently build our Control Panel that we can do the same within the context of how. The beauty of modern frameworks that are javaScript React, Ember and what we use at BC, Angular, is the fact that they are all aligning pretty strongly towards the concept of Web Components. Directives, in Angular speak. This permits us to define small chunks of our UI into standalone, dynamic pieces, that people can then stitch together. It gives a true number of advantages, for the reason that each piece is testable separately from other components. We get to abstract complex HTML patterns, semantics and accessibility attributes away from JavaScript engineers who just need implement custom tags or elements in their apps. With that, we get full control of the HTML since it's compiled into JavaScript objects, meaning we are able to update a component and rollout it out without the dreaded "find and replace" across huge number of lines of slightly differently formatted HTML. The engineers that are javaScript get to only concentrate on the things they really worry about - application logic, architecture, and performance. The UI and design teams get to own a significant chunk of user interaction and accessibility best practices, which is precisely what they care about the most. We're now getting nearer to solving the issue of our style guide moving away from date, by building components for our guide that get used in production. Solving for mutations is a tad bit more tricky, but from my observations, engineers are less likely to want to add a CSS class to a custom element if they could just paste in "normal HTML". Which can be somewhat of a win. Because it's JavaScript code, Sass and compiled CSS we can start to think of our Pattern-Lab as a small software project. With which comes the capacity to create releases and version tags that people can use to aid distribute our code and offer a controlled method of upgrade to our apps by treating the Pattern Lab as a dependency. The thing that is neat a versioned design language is that it provides the teams some advantages in charge, predictability and workflow. By adopting Semantic Versioning (or SemVer), we give our teams control over how they make use of our design language by deciding what version they have been using because of their particular product area.
This Article Will Make Your BigCommerce Amazing: Read Or Miss Out
They get predictability without them knowing, which would make a very unhappy and stressed engineering team as they know we're not going to push a change to them that will break all of their things. Predictability and control leads to confidence in your design language and much more estimations that are stable the project teams, that is super important in enabling them to ship things on time. With confidence comes adoption. Teams are able to range from the design language inside their product area, and because change is predictable, are actively engaged and encourage the evolution of those patterns to help make their product areas better. Another strong feature of versioning and distribution is testing. With good design comes iteration as you learn and refine your patterns to generate to best possible product experiences. Componentisation not merely enables you create quick, high fidelity prototypes for your usability and design research, nonetheless it can also potentially enable you to split test versions of certain components as you release beta or pre release versions of the Pattern-Lab. We are somewhat lucky in that we're aiming for an even more service orientated architecture in our main app, that also includes end code that is front. We build single page apps for each part of the control panel as we systematically upgrade the platform, using common core libraries to create each "micro-app", and then stitch them all together to create one control interface. What this means is we could potentially run updates that are minor our Pattern-Lab in some elements of the app rather than others. What which allows us to do is feed in improvements to a component that is particular the Lab, based on the research and testing we've done. We are able to split test that update in a small an element of the application with real users and track any improvements to task completion that we identify as important metrics. This could be huge when thinking about a long term design language where we slowly iterate over design as opposed to attempting a "big bang" re-design every 3-4 years. No users like big changes and giving us real data in a reduced risk manor on our design thinking is a massive win towards a happy product experience. Have we made much progress towards our utopian future? Not exactly, no. We've definitely made progress, just nowhere near as much as we could have wished for, for a number of reasons. We now have a fairly broad group of building blocks; elements and slightly more complicated components which we've used to construct a number of new parts of the app with great success. But whatever they're really missing may be the glue that is used to stick them all together into more rich patterns and layouts.
The rules, the principles, the do's and do not. In "atomic design" speak, we have built a lot of atoms and molecules rather than plenty of other things, and that which we're finding is that that's the stuff that is really important making our teams successful. Within the coming months we will be addressing just that, to help our project teams build more high fidelity features, more quickly sufficient reason for less guessing. In terms of the technology choice itself, we possibly may start to rethink the whole approach. We are still convinced that components will be the way that is best forward, but we are struggling with adoption, since only about 5% for the app is converted up to Angular. As a UI platform team we are pondering if Angular is the choice that is best for people to be providing our components in. For the reason that Angular is so "all in" on the "Angular way" of accomplishing things, it certainly leaves no flexibility in implementation. Even if assembling your project is super simple, it has to be a full blown single page Angular app, with the abstractions and conventions that come with it. Some of our teams are resource and time lucky, meaning a full re-write in Angular is totally feasible. Other teams are not so lucky; they may lack time or Angular expertise making a full re-write seem overkill or unnecessary. I think we should definitely still provide components that are javaScript perhaps the "framework" buy-in is holding us back. I'm personally fairly confident that a far more lightweight utility; a view or component library like React, Riot or Skate, will be better suited to our needs. Simpler abstractions, boiled down seriously to encapsulated custom elements which consist of plain DOM elements, along with event and callback hooks that respond to users interacting with them. Whatever framework that is javaScript use (or avoid using) to control the information layer, are able to hook into these and starting piecing them together to build apps. Essentially just a collection of serialisable DOM elements, with a nice developer API and no framework specific conventions to opt into. Pattern-Lab itself then becomes an infinitely more self service tool and really would not care about your technology stack. That's obviously a pretty stretch that is big and also the project all together is super ambitious, but that isn't planning to stop us from trying. For a app that is sizeable BigCommerce we think it's super important in enabling our product and engineering teams to provide new and improved features quickly with less re-inventing, and keeping our UI manageable. We're currently hiring for amazing engineers that are front-End understand these principles to join our UI Platform team. If you should be experienced in creating and shaping graphical user interface guidelines and you like what you read, get in contact.
