It’s been 13 years but the lyrics “But I will die for my own sins, Thanks a lot. We’ll rise up ourselves, thanks for nothing at all. So up off the ground our forefathers are nothing but dust now” from One Foot by FUN. still fucking hits.

"Ye Are My Friends, if Ye Do the Things Which I Command You." – John 15:14
Our Lord has said what He gave as proof of His friendship: He gave His life for us. He now tells us what our part is to be—to do the things which He commands. He gave His life to secure a place for His love in our hearts to rule us; the response His love calls us to, and empowers us for, is that we do what He commands us. As we know the dying love, we shall joyfully obey its commands. As we obey the commands, we shall know the love more fully. Christ had already said: “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love.” He counts it needful to repeat the truth again: the one proof of our faith in His love, the one way to abide in it, the one mark of being true branches is—to do the things which He commands us. He began with absolute surrender of His life for us. He can ask nothing less from us. This alone is a life in His friendship.
This truth, of the imperative necessity of obedience, doing all that Christ commands us, has not the place in our Christian teaching and living that Christ meant it to have. We have given a far higher place to privilege than to duty. We have not considered implicit obedience as a condition of true discipleship. The secret thought that it is impossible to do the things He commands us, and that therefore it cannot be expected of us, and a subtle and unconscious feeling that sinning is a necessity have frequently robbed both precepts and promises of their power. The whole relation to Christ has become clouded and lowered, the waiting on His teaching, the power to hear and obey His voice, and through obedience to enjoy His love and friendship, have been enfeebled by the terrible mistake. Do let us try to return to the true position, take Christ’s words as most literally true, and make nothing less the law of our life: “Ye are my friends, if ye do the things that I command you.” Surely our Lord asks nothing less than that we heartily and truthfully say: “Yea, Lord, what Thou dost command, that will I do.”
These commands are to be done as a proof of friendship. The power to do them rests entirely in the personal relationship to Jesus. For a friend I could do what I would not for another. The friendship of Jesus is so heavenly and wonderful, it comes to us so as the power of a divine love entering in and taking possession, the unbroken fellowship with Himself is so essential to it, that it implies and imparts a joy and a love which make the obedience a delight. The liberty to claim the friendship of Jesus, the power to enjoy it, the grace to prove it in all its blessedness—all come as we do the things He commands us.
Is not the one thing needful for us that we ask our Lord to reveal Himself to us in the dying love in which He proved Himself our friend, and then listen as He says to us: “Ye are My friends.” As we see what our Friend has done for us, and what as unspeakable blessedness it is to have Him call us friends, the doing His commands will become the natural fruit of our life in his love. We shall not fear to say: “Yea, Lord, we are Thy friends, and do what Thou dost command us.”
If ye do. Yes, it is in doing that we are blessed, that we abide in His love, that we enjoy His friendship. “If ye do what I command you!” O my Lord, let Thy holy friendship lead me into the love of all Thy commands, and let the doing of Thy commands lead me ever deeper into Thy friendship.

The end draws near, O my soul, the end draws near; yet thou dost not prepare, neither dost thou care. The time grows short. Arise, for the Judge is at the very doors. The days of our lives pass quickly, as if they were a dream, as if they were a flower. O why do we trouble ourselves in vain?

On 13th August 1867 William Craigie, the Scottish lexicographer, was born.
Isn’t it funny that us Scots started some of the most famous English establishments, like William Paterson who gave them The Bank of England, then Professor James Murray, the primary editor of the Oxford English Dictionary from 1879 until his death.
And we come to today’s subject, Sir William Craigie, a Scotsman from Dundee he was the third editor of the what is now commonly referred to as the ‘Oxford Dictionary’ or the ‘Oxford English Dictionary’(OED). He was editor of it for over 30 years.
It wasn’t always the English words for oor William though, born the youngest son of James Craigie and Christina Gow, William Craigie spent his formative years in his birth town of Dundee where, under the tutelage of his grandfather and older brother, he was introduced to Scottish Gaelic. This early taste of insular languages instilled in Craigie a passion that would endure for the rest of his lifetime. During his time studying at the West End Academy, Dundee, he began voraciously consuming the works of the early Scottish “Makars” – Robert Henryson, William Dunbar and Gavin Douglas – who would later become known among literary critics as the Scots Chaucerians for their role as the founding fathers of Scots literature.
As well as studying at St Andrews and Balliol College Oxford, where he learnt German, French, Danish and Icelandic, Craigie found himself at the University of Copenhagen where he added Medieval and Modern Icelandic to his ever-increasing list of languages.
Come 1897 Craigie’s lexicographical career began to take flight when the editorial board of the Philological Society’s New English Dictionary (soon to become the OED) were desperate to find a third Editor and Craigie’s name was put forward as a potential candidate. When Craigie received the fateful letter inviting him to work on the Dictionary on a trial basis; he was so keen, he even postponed his honeymoon with his newly wedded wife, Jessie Kinmond, to take up the position alongside the aforementioned James Murray, so you now had two Scots at the head of putting together the greatest collection of English words ever undertaken!
Let’s not forget, while he was employed full time on the English dictionary, Craigie continued with his other passion, A Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (DOST) and in 1907, gave a lecture in Dundee on the action necessary to involve local people in collecting ‘Scots words, ballads, legends, and traditions still current’. The DOST was compiled over the following 8 decades and covers the language of Scotland from its earliest beginnings up to 1700. DOST has over 50,000 separate entries with over 581,000 illustrative quotations, and the 12 large printed volumes contain a total of 8,104 pages.
The print edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was once a constant companion to students, academics and writers across the English-speaking world. The Internet has now replaced it, but in it's day it was a priceless item, maybe not the OED, as it is known, but I think most households had a print edition dictionary, ours was used both for our homework from school, and many many games of scrabble, it certainly helped me understand the meanings of words and how they are spelled.

Liturgical Elements: The Embolism
In the liturgical rubrics of the Mass, the "embolism" refers to a short prayer spoken out loud by the priest after the congregation has collectively recited the Lord's Prayer. According to Nicholas Ayo (The Lord's Prayer: A Survey Theological and Literary, page 196), "the embolism functions like a marginal gloss, an explanation of the last line of the Pater, and an unfolding of its many implications." In reformed liturgy of the Roman Church, the English translation of the embolism is as follows:
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil; graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of Your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
In the Tridentine form of the Roman Mass, a longer embolism was recited:
Deliver us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, from all evils past, present, and to come; and by the intercession of the Blessed and glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, together with Thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul and Andrew, and all the saints, mercifully grant peace in our days, that sustained by help of Thy mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all disturbance. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, who lives and reigns with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
The Ambrosian Rite, being another Latin rite, has an embolism that is unsurprisingly similar to the Tridentine one:
Deliver us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, from all evils past, present, and to come; and at the intercession for us of Blessed Mary who brought forth our God and Lord, Jesus Christ; and of Thy holy Apostles Peter and Paul and Andrew, and of blessed Ambrose Thy confessor and bishop, together with all Thy saints, favorably give peace in our days, that assisted by the help of Thy mercy we may be both delivered from sin and safe from all turmoil. Fulfill this by Him with whom Thou livest blessed and reignest God, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.
The embolism was not only an element of Roman liturgies, either. Take, for example, this embolism used by the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church (notice how the doxology that follows the modern Roman embolism is instead integrated into this one):
Merciful Lord, lover of all mankind, do not let us be overcome by temptation, but deliver us from the rebellious evil one and his perverse and evil ways. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory belong to You and Your Only Son and Your Holy Spirit, now and always and forever.
Here is the embolism of the Syro-Malabar Church, reflecting the Eastern Syriac rather than Western Syriac tradition:
Lord, God Almighty! Fullness of all goodness! Our Merciful Father! We entreat You for Your mercy. Do not lead us into temptation. Deliver us from the evil one and his hosts. For Yours is the kingdom, the might, the power, and the dominion in heaven and earth, now, always, and forever.
In the Greek liturgies, the embolism only survives in the Liturgy of Saint James, which has the following:
Lord, lead us not into temptation, O Lord of hosts! For Thou dost know our frailty; but deliver us from the wicked one, from all his works, from all his assaults and craftiness; through Thy Holy Name, which we call upon to guard us in our loneliness.
On a final note, Fr. Frederick Holweck, the author of the Catholic Encyclopedia's article on the embolism, thought that the Mozarabic embolism in particular was "very beautiful." In addition to being said after the Our Father at Mass, the following prayer was also said after the Our Father in the Mozarabic Church's Morning and Evening prayers:
Delivered from all evil, strengthened forever in good, may we be worthy to serve Thee, our God and Lord: and put an end, O Lord, to our sins; grant joy to them that are afflicted; bestow redemption upon the captives, health upon the sick, and repose to the departed. Grant peace and safety in all our days, shatter the audacity of our enemies, and hearken, O God, to all the prayers of Thy servants, all faithful Christians, upon this day and at all times. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, ever through all the ages of ages.

Okay, so Andrew Dost came out and said that 'C'Mon' was meant for Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland soundtrack, which makes sense as you can see in the post with all the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland references.
youtube
I did have a theory about this for a while, because the soundtrack had come out in March 2010 and they had just finished writing and recording it around early January 2010. There was also the Almost Alice album, that includes artists like Mark Hoppus and Pete Wentz, Avril Lavigne, Plain White T's, Owl City, Shinedown, and Wolfmother. And I can bet 'C'Mon' was supposed to appear on that album.
Yeah, I would love to know why it wasn't allowed onto the soundtrack in the end. If it's because of FBR wanting it to be a lead single, that really doesn't make sense for FBR at the time with 'New Perspective' and 'Mercenary' not being lead singles.
Needless to say, I was not expecting PATD lore from an interview about Moutain Dew but here we are.
'C'Mon' ft. fun.
Okay this is going to be really fun to talk about.
Tumblr media
The story of fun. and PATD goes way back to September 2009, and I've done a painful amount of research into this that I didn't think would exist.
The band fun. had just finished touring with Paramore in May 2009, and were about to release their new album, Aim & Ignite, in August. Funnily enough, Washington Post compared the album to A Fever You Can't Sweat Out.
Think of some of the arrangements as theatrical, much like those on Panic at the Disco's 2005 debut, "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out," and you'll get the idea. - link to the article
Their first album was warmly recieved by critics, but it wasn't a smash international hit. That was yet to come for them.
In September 2009, Brendon would tweet out the following lyrics from the song 'Be Calm':
Tumblr media
Brendon, you literally could not have related harder to the song where Nate wrote about anxiety and the lyric "After all, you lost your band, you left your mom." (the band Nate is referring to here is The Format, by the way).
Anyway...
Nate described the signing onto Fueled By Ramen as the worst kept secret, when the band annouced they had signed onto Fueled By Ramen and that they had been signed on for 9 months at that point (the post they annouced it in was in early August). This was at no suprise since they had been hanging around PATD a lot. I have a small theory that FBR read the Washington Post review of Aim & Ignite, and thought that fun. and PATD would be a good fit for a collab. Especially given that PATD was going back to more of their Fever roots for Vices & Virtues, and Brendon seemed to like the fun. album.
'C'Mon' was likely the first song fun. wrote under FBR, and the first time the band was properly getting to know PATD. They likely knew them due to the band being friendly with Paramore, but not properly.
"We went into the session not really knowing much about the Panic! guys," Ruess tells SPIN. "But we came out, not only with what I think is a really good song, but with a couple of really great friends that we have a huge amount of respect and admiration for." - SPIN
This is what Brendon had to say:
"We were actually just huge fans [of Fun.], and we had talked to some people in our management, and they mentioned the guys in Fun were fans of us as well, so we spent an afternoon with [guitarist] Jack [Antonoff] and [singer] Nate [Ruess], and it was awesome. It just clicked, and we all got along. It was kind of a perfect fit, and they were just so talented. We just kind of came in and arranged it with them. We have done a few shows now with it. I was a fan of The Format in high school. I’d be blasting "The First Single” on the way to school. Nate is such a talented dude. He’s got a voice, and the new stuff is phenomenal." - phoenixnewtimes (not a link to the blog, but a link to a copy and paste a fan did of the blog)
I swear to God, between Nate Ruess and Mike Viola, Brendon Urie is the King of Manifesting his own destiny.
So, 'C'Mon' was likely written and recorded around early to mid December 2009 when fun. was either in the process of getting signed or had just been signed, which makes sense with the timeline.
As a result, a beautiful friendship was born.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The song seemed to have been written by 13th December 2009 at least, and they must've been recording it around this time, because the band does imply they are in the same room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is giving "Mum, can I go hang out with my friends now please?" PATD visit NYC.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cut to new year:
Tumblr media
And then 'C'Mon' is released unto the world in 2011. It was a special exclusive release onto single vinyl, and I think the plan was to have a duet version, a solo version for PATD, and a solo version for fun. but it didn't end up happening. Those solo versions must exist somewhere though.
youtube
fun. would then also go onto open for PATD in the lead up for their second album, Some Nights, along with the band Funeral Party. I guess you can tell by the production and instrumental on 'C'Mon' that they were heading in that direction. Brendon and Nate are obviously big Freddie Mercury/Queen fans.
And then after the tour was over they still kept in contact and Brendon was still hyping them up for their second album:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are actually two album covers as well, the two bands designed separate ones.
This was fun.'s design, probably the one you're all very familiar with.
Tumblr media
And this is the PATD one:
Tumblr media
The PATD one seems to be the most rare one you can get, so if you have it, keep a hold onto it or sell it for a couple hundred.
What is the song about?
A lot of Alice's Adventures In Wonderland imagery.
Feels like I am falling down a rabbit hole Falling for forever, wonderfully wandering alone
"Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end! 'I wonder how many miles I've fallen by this time?' she said aloud. 'I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see: that would be four thousand miles down, I think--'" - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
What would my head be like If not for my shoulders Or without your smile
Tumblr media
I'd like to believe in all the possibilities
"Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible." - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
I am a man of many hats although I Never mastered anything
Tumblr media
When I am ten feet tall I've never felt this tall since the fall
Tumblr media
Nobody seems to know my name
youtube
Shall we sing, shall we sing, until the morning
Tumblr media
May we stay lost on our way home
"I've had enough nonsense. I'm going home!" - Disney's Alice In Wonderland
"Well, when one's lost, I suppose it's good advice to stay where you are... until someone finds you. " - Disney's Alice In Wonderland
So, yeah, very Alice's Adventures in Wonderland inspired. And points for not using the typical quotes, like one typical quote out of the many references I could find linking to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland shows that the boys are actually fans of the book and movie in my opinion, rather than just the pop culture aesthetic of Wonderland.
Live Performances
So, I believe that 'C'Mon' is technically the only b-side that PATD has ever played live. Funeral Party and fun. were two of the bands that were opening for PATD on the Vices & Virtues tour at the time, and Nate would come out to sing his part with Andrew playing on the piano in the back.
youtube
(yes, I specifically chose this video for those who love to watch Brendon murder this poor keyboard, but there are many other performances of 'C'Mon' live between Brendon and Nate)
And yes, Nate and Brendon were very touchy with each other, once again, did you all think Dallon was the only one getting any action on this tour?
EDIT: Also, little fact about the band's relationship with fun., Nate and Jack were both thanked in the Vices & Virtues linear notes, along with Jack's sister, Rachel.

If you love, or even really tolerate, Shakespeare, watch this 2018 King Lear on Amazon. It is one of the best adaptations of Shakespeare I've ever seen. The cast absolutely EATS: Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Andrew Scott, Florence Pugh, and that's just the top layer. Everybody in it is AMAZING.
Lear has long been a favorite play of mine for several reasons:
--It has all the family drama and biting dialogue of something like Six Feet Under.
--It has some of the most quotable lines, like this exchange early on:
Lear
Dost thou call me fool, boy?
Fool
All thy other titles thou hast given away; that thou wast
born with.
--The older sister's are so EVIL.
--The Edgar/Glaughster story is just so heartbreaking.
--Cordelia is just so GOOD.
