Last question for today: What animal would you assign each of the foxes?

I've written a post like this so some of this is a repeat but

Neil - a falcon who got rescued and had his injured wing fixed by the rescuer and nursed back to full health, and who now - despite having the entire world and its skies open to him - regularly returns to the home of his rescuer (but who still flies away and soars the skies - he just always comes back).

Andrew - a cat who grew up on the streets since kittenhood but eventually started hanging out at this one specific house. Refuses to be kept indoors, but also won't stop coming back for warmth, food, and cuddles.

Kevin - a lion raised in the circus, rescued, and then kept in an animal conservation center cus he won't survive in the wild anymore so now he just gets given bespoke enrichment and a safe environment.

Aaron - a dog whose previous family was abusive but whose current family is not, so he still has a tendency to bite or lash out but is learning that he's safe now.

Allison - one of those show horses meant to show off like,,, good breeding or pedigree or whatever but who just wants to fucking RUN, stop making her prance and pose this bitch wants to go full gallop in an open field.

Dan - one of those shelter dogs who grew up in a kennel who gets given a chance at adoption to be a Specialty Dog (service animal, drug sniffing dog, herding dog, whatever take your pick) despite not being the typical breed for it and puts her entire Heart And Soul into her new Dog Job

Nicky - a Failed Foster cat (meaning he was adopted by his foster) who assigns himself the job of Foster Dad (meaning he takes care of all the foster kittens who enter the house)

Renee - a cat who was gonna be put down for crashing out at her previous owners (who swore up and down they didn't do anything to deserve it) but who is a total angel for her new family

Seth - a wild horse with violent tendencies who gets tamed by the Power Of Friendship like in those horse girl movies and who starts training to win races as the Underdog who no one believed would win

Wip Wednesday

Alright I was tagged by a looot of people for this one hehe @bidisasterevankinard @typicalopposite @laundryandtaxesworld @unhingedangstaddict thank you darlings ♥ So here's the beginning of Tommy's scene of Flaming Delights (a.k.a my Hallmark Christmas AU): (TW for death but they're OC's and the death is off-screen, but there's depiction of grief)

Tommy felt like shit. And the fact he had flown a helicopter from the middle of the Amazonian forest to the nearest airport for three hours, and then had been stuck on an airplane for another eight, and then on a car for another two, had little to do with it.

He felt like shit from being in his brother’s house, a house he hasn’t visited since Angelica was three years old. Tommy could feel Andrew and Lizzie’s presence in every nook and creak of the place, and the beautiful framed portraits on the walls and fireplace made his heart feel like it was being stabbed. 

And then, of course, there was the starkest reminder: Angelica, who had looked up at him with sad and hopeful eyes, so similar to his dad’s, before asking if she could go to her bedroom because she missed the toys she hadn’t taken to Jee-Yun’s place and wanted to say hi to them. Tommy desperately wanted to do right by his niece, but he’d be lying if he said he had any idea on how to go about it.

He had done his best not to be an absent uncle, even if it was through FaceTime and presents sent from South America (he must have sent at least three capybara plushies to her over the years, and Tommy can see one of them in the living room’s couch). But being an uncle and being a guardian were two very different things, and Tommy had never, not in a million years, imagined himself in the second position. He had never imagined losing Andrew this young. 

“Hey, man, are you sure you don’t need some time? I can totally take Angie back to ours…” The kind voice of the short man (Tommy’s pretty sure he introduced himself as Howard) who had brought Angelica to him made Tommy wake from his dark thoughts. He was looking at him as if he was sort of expecting Tommy to break down in sobs or tears or something. 

But Tommy wouldn’t do that; he never showed emotions in front of strangers (he never showed emotions in front of people he knows either, but that’s not the point). He soldiered on, as taught from a very young age. Taking a deep sigh, Tommy shook his head, crossing his arms in front of his chest.

“Thank you, but I’ll manage. It’s… it’s what Andy and Lizzie would have wanted. But I’m truly grateful that you and your wife took care of her so far. She seems well as she can be, given the circumstances.” Tommy said, as kindly as he could; he did appreciate how these people had stood up for his niece when he couldn't, and he knew how much this community meant for his brother and sister-in-law. 

Lizzie had said more than once that, whenever Tommy decided to settle down, Flaming Pine would be a wonderful choice, and that they’d be delighted to help him find a place. He’d bet anything that wasn’t at all what they had in mind.

“Hey, you have nothing to thank us for”, Howard told him, patting his arm. “Lizzie was Maddie’s best friend; Jee and Angie are growing up together. She’s family, you can count on us for whatever you need”

The offer made Tommy uncomfortable; he knew it shouldn’t, that it was genuine, but it was such a far cry from the world he was used to. In the army, there was camaraderie, but not a lot of kindness. And his work as a wildlife rescue pilot was filled with much loneliness; a tight-knit community like this one just heightened his sense of isolation, but Tommy couldn’t think of any alternative. He wouldn’t uproot Angie’s life, not after his niece had just become an orphan. 

Before he could think of an honest answer that didn’t sound ungrateful, though, there was a soft knock on the door. He frowned, hoping to God it weren’t well-meaning neighbors wishing to express their condolences. He wouldn’t deserve them; if anything, Tommy should be the one offering his condolences to these people who were much more present in his brother’s life than Tommy himself. 

He opened the door warily, just to find a petite woman with spiky brown hair with the kindest brown eyes on the other side. One of her hands was firmly wrapped the smaller hand of a small girl who looked around Angelica’s age, and the other was holding a quite impressive gift basket. It was the girl’s resemblance to the man inside that clued Tommy in to their identities. 

“Hi”, the woman says, and her voice is soft, just like the rest of her. Tommy liked her instantly, something rare for him. “You must be Tommy; I’m Maddie, and this is Jee-Yun. I am so sorry for your loss”

And, wow. The way she said it didn’t make guilt flutter in his chest. He nodded with a small smile, stepping away from the door for them to come in (he may have spent most of the last years in different jungles, but he still had his manners). 

“Thank you. Won’t you come in? I bet Angelica will be thrilled to show her toys to Jee-Yun”

I put a lot of thought into my new year's resolution, but after pondering it for a while I think my only resolution is to make it through another year and not give up. 2025 might be a bumpy ride, but I'm going to try my best to stay strong. I've made it this far, haven't I? Why give up now?

Overall I think 2024 was a good year for me, and I hope that 2025 will be merciful!

Also, this is just a random thought, but I think it's interesting that the new year also started on a new moon. (yes, of course I keep track of the moon phases-- I'm a werecat, what would you expect?)

Cy -Super knowledgeable about alcohol but prefers to drink the cheap stuff -Loves to make puns but hates hearing them -An absolutely awful gossip, even though they deny being one -Despises onions. Absolutely fucking hates them. You put onions in their meal and they'd be less offended if you'd just spat in their face.

Week 9 - Preparing a 3D Scan for Printing

Pre-Class: Watching Andrew Simpson's video gave me a better insight into the importance of prototypes and models when creating a product and his mention of using different materials to recreate the size and weight made me realize I never took the weight into account. Although blue foam is a good way to recreate the shape, it is way lighter than the final product which is made up of glass filled up with liquid. As such, it gave me the idea to create my next model out of clay as it is closer in weight and still allows a high level of moldability.

Part 1 - Scanning & Meshing

This week was a fun way to learn how different software programs interact with each other and help produce a model for 3D printing. One main thing I learnt was that using a 2015 MacBook to run Rhino and 3ds Max is an insane choice and possibly an inventive way to cause an explosion.

After many failed attempts to boot both programs, I gave up and decided to complete this exercise at home as I had a stronger WiFi connection and a PC with (way) better specs.

Onto the actual work! After the lovely staff of the MCIC helped me scan my perfume bottle model into a 3D scan saved as an .stl file. [F.1] I got to opening it in Rhino and applying a quad remesh as this allows easier manipulation of the model in 3ds Max. [F.2] As someone who used Rhino previously it was comforting to be using a familiar program and had no issue completing this part.

Part 2 - Orientation & Modification

After last week, I dedicated myself to watching tutorial videos on 3ds Max throughout the week so as to get more affiliated with the program which really paid off during this exercise. Once I had the file prepared, I imported it to the program and quickly dealt with the orientation. [F.3]

The modification got a bit tricky after this though as my model had a few bumps around the surface caused by my nails which is less than ideal. The smoothing tool was a great help when combating this issue and luckily the dents were not too deep. I also used the symmetry tool to ensure my front and back view were identical. However, the mirror tool was really tricky to orientate as it is harder to view and the program was lagging heavily. I will look into better options to combat this issue as the lagging should not have occurred at all. Once the model looked ready to print, I saved and exported the file and moved on to Cura. [F.4]

Part 3 - Preparing for 3D Printing

With the file ready to go, once it was uploaded to Cura the rest was quite straightforward. I ensured the scaling of the bottle was right and made sure all the edges were nice and smooth. I then sliced it and my model is ready to print. As I do not have access to the printing services right now, I unfortunately cannot print my model but I could at least preview what it would have looked like. [F.5]

Bonus - Carl Update

Since this exercise did not take too long to complete and I was looking to implement something fun, I remembered how on my previous weekly post I had mentioned that I wished to learn how to 3D print the friend I made, Carl the Capybara. So I decided to do so!

With a quick tutorial, I learnt how to merge together Carl into a singular poly mesh on 3ds Max which meant he was ready for exporting! Once exported, I uploaded him onto Cura and scaled him to a friendly keychain-like size. [F.6]

Once sliced, I realised I should add support beams for the stomach and do an infill to ensure the printing result would be sturdy. Once done, Carl was ready to print! [F.7]

This week was a fun small activity and I really hope to print off Carl once I am back on campus as a great reminder of what this class has taught me and the progress I have made. He shall keep me company on my desk at home :)
