kinda fucking nuts how theatrical 2d animation is legitimately suppressed in the states. like it's comical.
at every turn every single director and producer puts it down and calls it outdated and completely strangles any movie made in the medium. the day the earth blew up is fantastic and warner bros tried their absolute best to completely bury it. 3d gets a bit of marketing at least!

This has been something that's been on my mind recently.
We all know about a lot of the crossover projects Nickelodeon has been making in recent years, most notably the All Star Brawl games.
But one thing I never see anyone mention is something related to the Nicktoons representation in those crossovers.
That being there's like, NO representation for the Nicktoons from 2010s, with the exception of The Legend of Korra and The Loud House.
I guess you could count Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as well given that they got TWO series in the 2010s, but they're always being represented by the 1987 characters (who weren't created by Nickelodeon, even though they have the rights to the show now).
When it comes to the Nicktoon representation, it's almost always the ones from the 1990s and the 2000s.
I think the reason why we never see any representation for the 2010s Nicktoons is because the 2010s is universally regarded as the dark age of Nickelodeon.
Not only did they lose their identity as a result of their pissing contest with Disney Channel, but they also released some of the worst outings in the Nicktoons line-up.
Planet Sheen, T.U.F.F. Puppy, Sanjay and Craig, Breadwinners, Pig Goat Banana Cricket, and Bunsen is a Beast.
These shows were not well-received when they first came out, and even after all these years, they're still not held in high regards.
However, there were some diamonds in the rough.
There's the aforementioned Korra, Loud House, and TMNT shows.
But there's also Harvey Beaks and Welcome to the Wayne.
But as you can see, the actual good Nicktoons were somewhat few and far between.
Most of the ones being released were either at best mediocre, or worse, just shit.
But one thing that almost all of them share is that they left particularly NO impact on the channel.
And while this can largely be blamed on Nickelodeon's notorious and ridiculously high standards for ratings that were set by SpongeBob and their incredibly lousy scheduling, a lot of them were just not that good and didn't resonate with viewers.
This was also why many of them were short-lived, usually only running for two seasons.
And that's if your lucky.....
Tumblr media
This would be made even worse when the shows were eventually dumped onto the somehow still-existing Nicktoons Network, a pre-paid channel that not everyone has, to die a slow and painful death.
Now I know some of you are gonna bring up other Nicktoons like Invader Zim and El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera.
Just like most of the ones from the 2010s, both these Nicktoons didn't really do well and were incredibly short-lived, only running for one season.
So how come they're still being featured in the crossovers despite that when compared to many of their fellow Nicktoons, they weren't really all that successful?
I think the reason for that is because of their reception.
Both Invader Zim and El Tigre were incredibly well-received when they first came out, and despite their short runs, they were still able to muster pretty big fanbases that are still going strong to this day.
And it's pretty clear that Nickelodeon has noticed this, especially in the case of El Tigre.
Why else would the show not only be included in Nick All Star Brawl 2, but just a few months ago, receive it's very own art book?
In spite of how short-lived it was.
Tumblr media
Most of the 2010s Nicktoons don't really have any notable fanbases to speak of.
Once again, because many of them were not good.
And even with the good Nicktoons from this time, they don't have that much of a fanbase.
Or at least ones as big as the ones for the 90s and 2000s Nicktoons.

A "Be With You" (Aphmau) in Depth Analysis/Critique PT.1
Tumblr media
DISCLAIMER; just as the title says I am not a professional nor do I claim to be, I'm just a 22 year old artist with a passion for animation and love to give the most genuine criticism I can. This is not an excuse for me or anyone else to attack Jessica/Jesson or the original animators. Any anger that you may pick up on is either not genuine or possibly an oversight in my wording. Enjoy!
To start let's discuss the opening shot;
Tumblr media
Other Minor Notes;
The snow isn't falling in the correct direction, technically, the correct way you'd animate this is the snow starting big on the screen, then get smaller implying it's getting farther away, then disappearing into the ground.
To expand on why I made the realistic cut, it would probably make more sense because the implication is Ein just seems to find this "perfectly cut" emerald in the middle of the snow.
This is extremely minor but the snows line-art texture is off, it shouldn't look as round, sculpted and squishy, the line-art should be more bumpy and rough looking.
Tumblr media
Other Minor Notes;
The emerald having three light sources while none of them interact with each other makes no real physical sense, not just because it's snowing in the middle a dense forest, this emerald exists on a other plain.
Some may point out that so much animation might be a show of hard work therefore its "good", I'll be blunt and say it's not. More frames and movement doesn't always mean better. Subtle and singular movement works just as well. As the saying goes "work smarter now harder".
Tumblr media
Minor Notes:
typically scarring doesn't have it's own line art, scars normally aren't defined enough on the skins to warrant that. Typically they are drawn in a separate color on the color animation file. I will go more in depth on this later.
I typically don't but I believe his you're character’s in a place with harsh lighting its better to experiment with colors you are using.
remember when someone in animation moves if it has something poking out of it that piece will follow, notice how the ears are so high up on the head there almost on the back of it. When they should be on top.
Tumblr media
Minor Notes;
the standard fps is 24 for animation, this includes film, most animators by a 2 to 3 rule. Which means a frame will take up two to three ticks in the timeline.
Remember, hair/fabric/fur will move and be "yanked" by the roots when a character head moves, and the movement is dictated by speed and force as which the character moves.

Guys, what if Inside Out 2 is a genuine box office flop? No really, like, Pixar are practically staking their entire future and what they'll do next on this. And they already announced they're gonna be doing more sequels for the sake of staying afloat. But, what happens if Inside Out 2 bombs? What will Disney do to Pixar if that happens? Genuinely scared of the possibility.

A struggle with smooth animation that people often have is with the pacing. The last animation is a good example for this.
Slow-in and slow-out is known as the most important principle of animation, because its what makes your animationed characters and objects look alive, or real. It is making sure that, in between your keyframes, you have some inbetweens that are close to each keyframe, and then a few that are far in between. Like this ball!
Tumblr media
For the last example, the inbetween frames have no sense of "slow in" or "slow out". They go at the same pace, with the lines drawn exactly inbetween the frame before it and after it for each frame. It gives it this stiff, robotic look and makes us feel kind of uncanny. If he had stayed in his keyframed positions for half a second, and then quickly moved to the next position, using a few slow frames that are near each keyframe to ease us into it, the animation would vastly improve. He's animated more like this:
Tumblr media
Even the second to last one practices slow-in and slow-out, it's just animated at a very high frame rate and there are so many unneccesary frames that you could cut half of them and get the same motion done.
Anyway I wanted to talk about this phenomenon because I like to animate smoothly and it can be easy to fall into this if you don't keep slow-in and slow-out in mind. Eventually, though, it will become force of habit.
Tumblr media
(Me talking about this)
The next time you want to call a sequence “Well animated” do yourself a favour and rewatch it with the sound muted. Often times ir’s only after you remove sound from something that you can truly see if the animation underneath is actually good or not, or if the music/acting is manipulating you.
….but on that same note, “Well animated” does not mean “Fluidly animated”. Because something can be VERY well animated and have few frames if those frames are in the right place, or have a shit ton for frames and be badly animated because it’s over-animated and moves way too much.

*me looking for something something to read*
*sees inc3s/t fics*
Tumblr media
Before some of y’all defend it! I don’t even read this shit. YES, I see the damn warnings 🧍🏻‍♀️ but seeing fics like these going around the internet is disappointing and disgusting. Like I genuinely don’t understand how some of y’all writers write taboos like this + readers who encourages and reads it. It doesn’t matter if it’s fictional, what’s worse is that you insert yourself in this scenario.
I want to say yall should be ashamed and go get help ASAP!! but y’all are GROWN and probably too stubborn to even understand the problem so I’ll hold y’all accountable for that. I genuinely can’t believe I’m breathing the same air as y’all who fetishized and fantasies things like this.
*sorry for the random tags I just want to spread my words*

So i watched it, and this mf doesn't know what he's talking about AT ALL
Tumblr media
He whines that Elio doesn't have a unique shape (neither do protagonists of Coco / Inside out / most of Incredibles cast which he praises) and completely ignores all the unique aliens, which INTENTIONALLY CONTRAST to humanoid Elio
He doesn't know the difference between art style, character appearance and silhouette, and he only sees it as a marketability tool
He doesn't bring shape language reasons, characters should be shaped like squares just for funnies i guess
He says that Elio's design is not memorable, and compares him to characters from Up, who is the most generic normal people, who looks this way for relatability sake, they're recognizable only because you've already seen this movie as a kid
If you draw Carl or Russell in a different art style you wouldn't recognize em i swear, while Elio, Mei, Luca have tons of distinct and unique features
You don't need to make character a dodecahedron to make him memorable, the design must correlate to its tone first, Elio rounded cuz he's friendly and inoffensive
If you relate more to Carl than to Elio or Luca or Mei well it's because you're old af, and just hate everything new
"But Pixar used to be about animals and objects n shit, now there are too many humans" first of all, most Pixar movies have big human focus in them, second Elio isn't just about the single human, there are wacky aliens, Luca has sea monsters, Turning Red has big effing red panda, are these not unique and memorable enough creatures?
I can cherry pick a bunch of old characters with Le Bean Mouth, but which is only bad now because a meme said so, and we all must hop on a trend made by a bunch of a-holes who have no idea what they're talking about and spread negativity about the movie they haven't even seen
