One thing I've realised about AI art stuff is that you need to ask what it is that you're looking at.

Firstly, what is it? Ok well I see a river and a bridge going over it. But then that river isn't a river as you get closer to the source of it and the bridge is wonky in a way an artist wouldn't care to make it. Then you notice the light coming from the river isn't a light source, its just there. The god rays, there is light coming from the clouds, but none of the rooftops imply that; the god rays bend evem though they, in this case are in the style of lens flares but are clearly meant to be god rays. The rooves end in such a way that they don't mesh with the houses.

So to clarify, what is this picture of? I can't tell.

See, the moon isn't a moon, its an overlaid ball of something, but its also not a ball because the bottom doesn't connect up right. Is it a window into another galaxy? Fuck knows, neither does the 'artist'. Why are her legs so long? Why is that town there? Wouldn't a photographer edit that out because it feels wrong? Why are the dunes/mountains unable to choose whether they are dunes or mountains? Why does the style of mountain dune thing change as you look toward the right? Why isn't the moon centralised? The lighting is boring except for on the dress where it is interesting but ultimately generic for this kind of thing.

The insistence in the usage of AI and how amazing it all is tells me that it needs to be perfect, because why wouldn't it be? A person is flawed and can be replaced with a machine, but why is it just worse? If this can do a better job than a person then why isn't it?

Not only do these pictures mean nothing, the thing that created them does not know what they are. Does that not tell you that its shit? If I have to ask what the picture is and the picture cannot show me that then what does that say about the picture? Maybe that coukd be a feature if there were intention involved, but there isn't. Do you see the issue here?

These simply aren't good, it takes a moment of looking to see the things I'm seeing and even less time to see that it isn't right.

Okay something that bothers me is the fact physics is seen as the more prestigious of the three main sciences, with biology at the bottom and chemistry in the middle. Like. I doubt most people could name a famous biologist, but they could name 5 famous physicists. Why are Albert Einstein and Stephen hawking household names but Norman Borlaug and Jonas Salk aren't?

Not to dismiss the accomplishments of Einstein or Hawking, or their genius, but their actual tangible contributions to society have been miniscule compared to that of Borlaug or Salk who have each saved LITERALLY hundreds of millions, if not billions, of lives each. Half the food on your plate was probably grown thanks to Borlaug and Salk is the reason half your siblings didn't die of polio as a kid.

Sure Einsteins theory of relatively is important for modern satellite communications but really though how can it compare?

This is coming from someone who studied physics. I love physics, and years ago when i was at uni I looked down at biology and so did everyone else studying physics. And I know others did too. Retroactively of course I know this was so very wrong.

If society as a whole started treating biology with more respect then maybe more students would go into that field. If we had rockstars of medicine and agricultural science that were household names rather than just physicists? think of how many more lives could be saved, how many more lives could be improved.

I'm not saying physics isn't important, and more scientists of any kind is always good, but proportionally I think societies priorities are a little skewd.

I stubbornly only use 2 columns in CAS as I used a laptop for so long and just got used to the scale that more columns messes with my muscle memory and autistic hatred of change. But I get why lots of people use it I just need to get over myself. UICheats and Better Build/Buy are staples to me. And like every adult mod under the sun too of course, especially the ones my friend made. My gameplay would be nothing if Alex and Jack were not sex addicts. I was talking with a friend recently about how much of a culture clash the Monk Class is compared to the rest of Dungeons & Dragons and was wondering if there is a coherent reason for their original inclusion. I'm aware that they're largely influenced by Shaolin monks as depicted in Hong Kong cinema in the 70's/80's as compared to the Sword and Sorcery stuff most of the rest of D&D takes influence from.

Basically, my question ultimately boils down to, "Is the Monk Class there purely because of an original player wanting to rule of cool their way into playing something wildly out of genre, or is there a stronger link between Sword and Sorcery and Hong Kong cinema that could have organically resulted in the Monk Class joining the rest of the classes?"

A lot of the link between the two was simply a matter of time and place. The kung fu craze hit North America at just about exactly the same time as the sword and sorcery revival that gave us films like Clash of the Titans and Beastmaster and The Sword and the Sorcerer and Dragonslayer and Krull – not to mention the Arnold Schwarzenegger Conan adaptation, which revived popular interest in first-wave sword and sorcery literature – so there was a lot of it going around. Analysis of early Dungeons & Dragons as a product of its media influences often overlooks that it was largely drawing on what was trendy in American popular media in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Even the tonally incongruous Lord of the Rings references weren't a deep cut; while the books were originally published in the 1950s, they'd experienced a strong resurgence in the 1970s, putting them firmly in the popular consciousness at the time that D&D was being developed. All this being the case, it's not surprising that early D&D was also substantially influenced by Hong Kong action cinema.

That said, the reason the monk character class in particular (i.e., as opposed to kung fu media influences more generally) is there is allegedly because one specific guy in one of the game's early playtest groups really, really wanted to play as Remo Williams from Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir's The Destroyer; several of the class's signature abilities are direct references to powers Williams exhibits in the course of the novels. Remarks from folks who worked at TSR at the time have pointed the finger at Brian Blume as the Remo Williams fan in question, though accounts are conflicted whether Blume was actually an uncredited contributor to Dave Arneson's Blackmoor (1975), in which the class makes its first proper appearance, or whether Blume's interest merely prompted its inclusion.

This is the case for the character archetypes in a lot tabletop RPGs of that era; instead of trying to work out what classes "ought" be be present, authors would simply start with the types of characters their playtesters actually wanted to play, often based on specific popular media characters, then work backwards to derive an IC rationale for why those were the setting's standard adventuring professions. Other examples from D&D in particular most obviously include the Ranger (based on Tolkien's Aragon, naturally), but also the Paladin (principally inspired by Holger Carlsen from Poul Anderson's 1961 isekai novel Three Hearts and Three Lions, also the source of D&D's goofy regenerating trolls), the Assassin, back when it was still a separate character class (probably mainly based on the Assassin Caste from John Norman's Gor), and even the Wizard to a large extent (less Gandalf than you'd think: a large portion of D&D's iconic wizard spell list is lifted directly from the 1963 Vincent Price film The Raven).

(I often think that modern indie RPGs could benefit from reviving this approach. Like, fuck textual consistency – just pick half a dozen of your favourite popular media characters without regard for the compatibility of the source material and work backwards to explain why these six random assholes are your game's playable archetypes!)
