Ok as my apology I offer you a 3 page ranpoe meeting in this au <333 (For context I yapped about this in another post but its a platonic and romantic soulmate dreamsharing au!)

(And content warning for parental deaths ig? its Ranpo's backstory so...)

Ranpo is tired. Really tired. His eyes are red and puffy, and the room is too humid, and the black clothes sticking to his back are just making everything worse. Ranpo knows, logically, that the color of his clothing isn’t making the room stuffier. He also knows that Mama would have hated a wake like this, and that most of the people in this room are people who barely even knew his parents. Like the police officers—probably people his father saved, at some point. People who waited to show their gratitude until after his father wasn’t there to accept it.

No one remembers to thank a person until they’re gone.

And no one is there for his mama, even though Ranpo knows she was the only one there to help his father talk through his cases. She helped solve most of them, but never wanted people to know. Ranpo didn't get it. Still doesn't. Why wouldn’t she want people to know how smart she was?

Ranpo sighs. He’s tired of people he barely knows staring at him with blatant pity. 

The police suspect foul play. They’re wrong, of course, and it grates Ranpo’s ears hearing their pathetic attempts at interpreting evidence, talking about the “could have been’s” and “probably’s” like there isn’t only one truth.

Occam’s razor says that the simplest explanation is often the correct one. Occam’s razor says that Ranpo’s parents were killed in a car accident, not an elaborate murder plot or an assassination.

And Occam's razor is right.

Rain-slicked roads killed two of the greatest minds in the world, and left Ranpo all alone.

Someone else organized the wake. He can’t remember who, even though they asked him dozens of questions about what he thought they would have wanted out of something like this, and apparently did everything the exact opposite. How annoying. His head hurts even more now, even though he thought his fever broke hours ago. His eyes are heavy too. He rests his head on his knee, and he’s pretty sure pity is the only reason no one stops him from falling asleep.

Except instead of a mindless dream, he opens his eyes to his bedroom, and a stranger sitting on the floor next to him.

Oh. So that’s what this is. 

The boy stares at him. He’s probably a year or two older than Ranpo, and his bangs block most of his face. The rest of his hair is in a ponytail tied with a ribbon, and Ranpo can't help but think he's a bit odd. After a lengthy silence, the boy clears his throat.

“Are you… okay?” the boy asks awkwardly, like he’s trying to calm down a startled animal and not really sure if he should be trying in the first place. The words aren’t Japanese, but their meaning is immediately translated to him anyway.

That’s interesting, even if his soulmate is proving to be a bit dumb. Does Ranpo look okay?

Ranpo gives him a deadpan stare, and the boy sours.

“Do you... want to talk about it?” he tries again, slowly, as if every fiber of his being is praying that Ranpo doesn't. He’s clearly uncomfortable, and Ranpo finds it funny enough that he decides to answer.

“My parents just died.”

“Oh,” the boy looks even more uncomfortable, and Ranpo can’t help but laugh. He covers his mouth with his sleeve, but his soulmate clearly catches it and looks distinctly embarrassed. He’s funny, at least. “That… That sucks?”

“Why are you saying that like a question?”

“I mean, I assume it sucks?”

“You’re kind of bad at this,” Ranpo says, even though he’s smiling.

“I’m trying my best!”

Ranpo rolls his eyes, which only makes the boy wrinkle his nose in frustration. Before he can say anything else, Ranpo decides he is actually a bit curious, and asks, “Where are you from?”

The boy pauses, “Boston.”

“That’s not very helpful.”

“Oh. America, then.”

“I’m in Japan.”

The boy considers, “You’re speaking Japanese, then?”

“No, I’m speaking Spanish,” Ranpo says blandly, and the boy’s eye twitches. Ranpo can’t see it, but he just knows. “Are you stupid?”

His soulmate bristles, “That’s not—”

“Whatever,” Ranpo shrugs and holds his hand out like he saw in the American show his mom likes once. Liked. “Edogawa Ranpo.”

“Um, Edgar Allan Poe.”

“...Did you make that up?” Ranpo asks, amused.

“Why would I make that up?”

“That cannot be a real name. It’s basically mine.”

“I’m pretty sure I’m older than you. That means your name is basically mine.”

Ranpo frowns, “How old are you?”

“Fourteen,” Edgar Allan Poe says, and Ranpo crosses his arms. 

“Well, why would I copy the name of some boy I never met?”

Poe shrugs, “Your parents copied it, then.”

“Making fun of my dead parents isn’t very nice, Poe-kun,” Ranpo says, and the words don’t even sting as he says them. He doesn’t think his parents would mind—Mama always liked dark humor.

Poe freezes, and then squeaks, “That’s not—Oh my god—”

He's floundering, and Ranpo can’t help the cackle he lets out at Poe’s startled expression, laughing until there are tears pricking at his eyes that he scrubs away with a grin. It feels cathartic, even if Poe is staring at him like he's having a stroke.

“Thanks, Poe-kun” Ranpo says, once his laughter dies down, “I feel a bit better. You know, for a romantic soulmate, I could probably do worse.”

“Poe-kun?” Poe asks, before he jolts, “Romantic soulmate? Ranpo, what—”

When Ranpo wakes up, he’s smiling.

I had way too much fun writing this scene akdjaklsdjl I think 12 year old Ranpo would be kind of an asshole but more teasing than rude and Poe's only crimes are being awkward and 14

I kind of wanted to reflect their canon meeting (even if that meeting is still DEFINITELY happening lmao) but change it enough to show their personality changes as they get older ig?

Also I'm on the fence about making Fukazawa a platonic soulmate to Ranpo bc while that makes sense i feel like it also makes sense for them to not be platonic soulmates to show how "strange" it really was that fukazawa just picked up a kid? I also really wanted to make ranpo platonic soulmates w dazai, yosano, and atsushi (and potentially kunikida) and I don't want to give him too many lmfao

Last note but I'm trying to figure out if I want there to be a way to distinguish between platonic and romantic soulmates officially or if I just want it to be a feeling lmao like is it just a vibe they get in their dreams or is there a tangible explanation?? Idk but if y'all have ideas I'd love to hear them <33

hi angel!! i’ll be so completely honest with you… i do not <///3 i have been periodically writing the next chapter whenever i have a few mins but i haven’t had the time to actually sit down and work on it :/// mainly because all my free time has been dedicated to mcat studying and getting all my stuff ready for graduation…

the chapter rn is 3k words but i planned for it to be a pretty long one so i def still have more to add !! i really wanna sit and write but i physically can’t until my mcat is done on april 25th sobs……

(so unless smth crazy happens and i somehow have free time to finish it i wouldn’t expect the next chapter until may starts <///3)

this is a hard question anon…… obviously i wanna say yes because househusband!sugu is the loml but. i think suguru really really really wants to provide for you 😭 in every way he can. if he had it his way, he would do the working and the chores….. and you’d just be at home working on your little hobbies and relaxing. that’s what would make him the happiest.

but obviously that’s simply Not Possible so the second best choice in his mind is to balance work and tending to you the best he can…… your relationship would probably be very equal overall but he has a tendency to do most of the cooking and cleaning himself. it gives him peace of mind <3

ANYWAY….. if you brought it up with him, i feel like he would be a little hesitant :’) simply bc he does Not want you working yourself to the bone to provide for the both of you. the only scenario where i can picture him budging is if working on your career and being the breadwinner genuinely makes you happy…. if it’s something you really want to do, then i think he’d be supportive!!!! and more open to being your househusband :3c he’d probably grow to love it a lot. might get a little bored sometimes, just staying at home, but he always finds new things to do. testing out a new recipe, growing a little garden, maybe picking up knitting or another cute little hobby…. just doting on you and making your house feel more like home gives him a deep sense of meaning.

Just,,, him learning how much of the world there is to appreciate (loving it more than he already does.), and then!!! Blaziken shows up and i was like!! "woag!!! thats so cool!!!!!" and then that one scene with the marble and I was like "THATS THE MEGA STONE!!"

ofc my brain was like "wow i cant wait for that plot to start!!" not realizing that will happen in the exact same chapter.

LIKE!!! YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE EXCITEMENT I FELT WHEN I READ THE SCARF WITH THE MEGA STONE IN IT!!! I WAS LIKE "HEY!!! I KNOW THAT IS!! I CAN'T WAIT FOR MEYER TO FIND A KEYSTONE!!"

AND IT HAPPENED IN THE SAME CHAPTER.

People breaking into the lab (TEAM FLARE?!) and my brain was like "oooh drama!!" AND THEN??? IT HAPPENED?????? AND I JUST?? STARTED SCREAMING????? LIKE!!! HELLO!!!!!! WHAT THE HELL!!!! YOU CANT JUST DROP THAT AND LEAVE!!!!!!

YES YES YES I'm so happy that I've got you with The Feels ever, this has been cooking for way too long and it was about time I unleashed this upon the world (at least, it was cooking in my head. ended up writing this a little over a week I think??). And yeah!! The beginning of (physical) (doing it yourself sort-of-ish) (actively participating) heroics of one (1) Meyer lol. He's always been a hero at heart, even if he's sometimes been reluctant to look at it, but now he's engaging in the action (and alongside a friend as well!!).

^^ You going in deeper with this chapter /lh. I mean, I'm glad that you've been constantly surprised, because it means that I've finally mastered the skill of being able to idk actually be surprising heh. Which is great considering I'm usually covering eps with some twists here and there, so being able to cover new ground and get you hooked on each bend and turn is honestly the best feeling (not that I enjoy you being absolutely shocked, but also! mark of a good writer) :P

...At least the plot started? As it is you are FLOODING me with so many feelings and I'm just floored with your reaction (/definitely loving it lol) and just,,, YEAH! Love and reuniting and a particular Mega and Key Stone coming into play. If it makes you happy I'm already working on the next chapter to make up for when I may not have time, so there's that? idk kawanishi feels like such a beanie person but not the douchebag slouchy ones he's got one that's a little snug and has something embroidered on it like a bird or something

okay that's a lie. he has ONE douchebag slouchy beanie that makes him look like how a high school romance shoujo mangaka of the mid-2000s would dress a flashy somewhat-delinquent teenage boy (honey lemon soda my beloved)

this, of course, could not be farther from the truth

the entire second year is scared of him bc they never somehow realize he's there until he says something and they're like "holy SHIT". this also means he knows a bunch of hot gossip

(the hot gossip miyagi group chat: kawanishi, watari, onagawa, and narita)

on the other hand. that means the students of 2-5 win the contest for "best cultural festival attraction" between classes bc they had the best haunted house the miyagi prefecture had ever seen

he's on really good terms with the school nurse because sometimes he sneaks into the infirmary to take naps during lunch or gym periods

knows how to lockpick BECAUSE he keeps trying to sneak into the infirmary. and occasionally the school roof for their "team bonding picnics" so that tendou doesn't have to keep swiping the key from the student council

i'm not just saying this bc i like enamel pins but i think kawanishi DOES like enamel pins. he's got a collection of these edgy sarcastic ones that he thinks are hilarious in a "started-ironically-and-now-i-can't-stop-pipeline" kind of way

he's got this whole tumblr-grunge-indie-hipster thing going on with his douchebag slouchy beanie and denim jacket with pins all over the collar and ripped jeans and converse sneakers and shirabu thinks he pulls it off unfairly well

i feel like kawanishi also really likes fantasy/sci-fi and is actually SUCH a huge secret nerd about it. and really likes cyberpunk and fantasyland settings you'd get from like idk snow white with the red hair or nivalis (i KNOW it's an indie game that's not even out yet but sue me i don't know cyberpunk all that well)

he and tsukki actually become friends while arguing about how much of akira is deep meaning and how much of it is actually just straight up bullshit because WHAT the fuck was that

also he's subscribed to a bunch of these small artists on youtube who make background music and fun art to go with them bc he can put together a great soundtrack for getting hw and studying done

likes getting lil gifts for shirabu, especially to add to his stationary collection. shirabu has sticky notes in the shape of whales and ice cream and paper lanterns and washi tape with fireworks and beach motifs and bakery stuff and it's all because of kawanishi

kawanishi just sticks to the plain solid-color square sticky notes that he uses to leave shirabu notes around his dorm. just small things, really, a reminder that this is a place shirabu belongs and it is a place he is loved. you're doing great. get some water soon. i'll bring you dinner, just text me. don't forget to sleep.

and shirabu will be hard pressed to admit it, but those might be his favorite sticky notes of all
