One thing that I keep seeing whenever I make posts that are critical of macs is folks in the notes going "they make great computers for the money if you just buy used/refurbs - everyone knows not to buy new" and A) no they don't know that, most people go looking for a new computer unless they have already exhausted the new options in their budget and B) no they don't make great computers for the money, and being used doesn't do anything to make them easier to work on or repair or upgrade.
Here's a breakdown of the anti-consumer, anti-repair features recently introduced in macbooks. If you don't want to watch the video, here's how it's summed up:
In the end the Macbook Pro is a laptop with a soldered-on SSD and RAM, a battery secured with glue, not screws, a keyboard held in with rivets, a display and lid angle sensor no third party can replace without apple. But it has modular ports so I guess that’s something. But I don’t think it’s worthy of IFixIt’s four out of ten reparability score because if it breaks you have to face apple’s repair cost; with no repair competition they can charge whatever they like. You either front the cost, or toss the laptop, leaving me wondering “who really owns this computer?”
Apple doesn't make great computers for the money because they are doing everything possible to make sure that you don't actually own your computer, you just lease the hardware from apple and they determine how long it is allowed to function.
The lid angle sensor discussed in this video replaces a much simpler sensor that has been used in laptops for twenty years AND calibrating the sensor after a repair requires access to proprietary apple software that isn't accessible to either users or third party repair shops. There's no reason for this software not to be included as a diagnostic tool on your computer except that Apple doesn't want users working on apple computers. If your screen breaks, or if the fragile cable that is part of the sensor wears down, your only option to fix this computer is to pay apple.
How long does apple plan to support this hardware? What if you pay $3k for a computer today and it breaks in 7 years - will they still calibrate the replacement screen for you or will they tell you it's time for new hardware EVEN THOUGH YOU COULD HAVE ATTAINED FUNCTIONAL HARDWARE THAT WILL WORK IF APPLE'S SOFTWARE TELLS IT TO?
Look at this article talking about "how long" apple supports various types of hardware. It coos over the fact that a 2013 MacBook Air could be getting updates to this day. That's the longest example in this article, and that's *hardware* support, not the life cycle of the operating system. That is dogshit. That is straight-up dogshit.
Apple computers are DRM locked in a way that windows machines only wish they could pull off, and the apple-only chips are a part of that. They want an entirely walled garden so they can entirely control your interactions with the computer that they own and you're just renting.
Even if they made the best hardware in the world that would last a thousand years and gave you flowers on your birthday it wouldn't matter because modern apple computers don't ever actually belong to apple customers, at the end of the day they belong to apple, and that's on purpose.
This is hardware as a service. This is John Deere. This is subscription access to the things you buy, and if it isn't exactly that right at this moment, that is where things have been heading ever since they realized it was possible to exert a control that granular over their users.
With all sympathy to people who are forced to use them, Fuck Apple I Hope That They Fall Into The Ocean And Are Hidden Away From The Honest Light Of The Sun For Their Crimes.

Legislation under the moniker “right to repair” has now been introduced in all 50 states, marking a major milestone in this grassroots consumer movement.
GNN has reported on the march of right to repair laws across the US, but also the kind of entrepreneurialism they engender: like an aftermarket auto parts company that makes replacements for well-known faulty components in automobiles.
Passed in New York, Minnesota, Colorado, California, and Oregon, Wisconsin just became the final US state to introduce some sort of right to repair laws.
In broad terms, all of these bills would generally guarantee a consumer’s right to access replacement parts for devices and machines, repair manuals or other relevant documents for expensive products, diagnostics data from original manufacturers, and even in some cases, such as automobiles, appropriate tools necessary for maintenance.
They may also ban the use of technological protection measures, sometimes called “software locks” that are designed to restrict repair only to authorized repair technicians.
“Americans are fed up with all the ways in which manufacturers of everything from toasters to tractors frustrate or block repairs, and lawmakers are hearing that frustration and taking action,” Nathan Proctor, right to repair director for consumer rights group PIRG, told 404 Media’s Jason Koebler, who has been tracking right to repair legislation for 10 years.
OF A SIMILAR SPIRIT: 580 Repair Shops Form a Flourishing Subculture Fixing Toasters, Electronics, Coffee Makers and Lamps
He details that at first, big tech and big engineering, such as Apple, John Deere, and others, ardently lobbied against these bills, saying that trade secrets protections would be violated if they were forced to turn over diagnostics, telemetry, or other insider data to non-company actors.
The progressive difficulty with which modern products, particularly electronics, are designed prevents most amateurs from being able to repair them if they break.
MORE RIGHT TO REPAIR NEWS: EU Approves Groundbreaking New ‘Right to Repair’ Laws Requiring Appliances to Be Easier to Fix
Screws are forsaken in favor of plastic locking toggles which break if removed, fuse or wire cover panels are replaced with jointless polymer molded covers, both of which and many more examples besides are designed to deter the fix-it-minded folks enough so that they will just throw the product away and buy a new one.
Electronic waste is one of the largest sources of non-recyclable landfill waste, and hopefully enough of these right to repair bills pass that some of these millions of powerstrips, lamps, phones, computers, and televisions can be kept out of the ground.

What was the purpose of the panels of blinking lights on those big mid-century computers? Were they showing calculations in progress?
Excellent question, this is one of my favorite subjects! Blinkenlights serve a number of functions. Hollywood tended to use just the lights to make it look like a computer was busy doing something, but real computers had more than just lights on their front panel. Let's walk through a few examples of use cases with photos of computers I've seen over the years at museums and vintage computer festivals:

Some front panels were built to be used for diagnostics. Computers like these were primitive enough that they required constant care and debugging to do their jobs, especially the early vacuum tube machines (everything pictured here is transistorized). You could tell what peripherals were being used, but also check the status of registers, carry flags, status flags, data, various buses, etc. It was also a way to see if a program had "gone off into the weeds" and started doing things that were irregular, possibly due to a software bug, or a problem with the hardware.

On many of these machines, you can enter programs directly into the main memory using the front panel, but it's an incredibly tedious process -- something to be avoided if possible. Consider it a last fallback.

Other times, it's a starting point, which we call "bootstrapping" (this eventually evolved into the term "booting"). You aren't likely to program everything on such a limited interface, but you are more likely to enter in a small program that can tell the computer how to run a more complex peripheral, like a paper tape or punch card reader, or maybe some type of magnetic storage device. Once you can get a program loading off of a larger permanent storage device, you can load up software to interface with a terminal of some kind which is much easier.

Eventually, the microprocessor made home computers a possibility, but many were only equipped with a front panel out of the box. You would have to add in a serial card, more RAM, possibly some ROMs, and either a teletype or glass terminal in order to get a more sophisticated and intuitive interface from the computer, capable of programming in a higher level language. Some were considered more like trainers, or hobbyist devices, and simply lacked that ability, meaning all you got was a front panel with switches and lights.

I made my own front panel to see what the experience was all about:
Then everything changed in 1977, with the introduction of these three machines: the TRS-80 Model I, the Commodore PET 2001, and the Apple II. They were what you might call "appliance computers" and they had no need for a front panel.

Hopefully that answered your question!

I have a question, got a RVN-4Lr though it was recovered from a battle and now every time I try to pilot it tends to have targeting issues, got any idea how to get it fix. Rather listen to a more experience mech pilot then some mechanic that will try to cause more problems for me.
Having briefly piloted one of these at the Republic Test Pilot School, I was briefed on the issue. It resulted from the targeting system never being fully updated after the Narc system was removed - that or a faulty patch with bad code.
You can tell which you have fairly easily - boot the targeting system in diagnostic mode and query the last installed patch. If it returns with C-APP-CHUR-TTS-v3.41.2, that is the defective patch. You will either need to roll back to the previous patch or apply a fix patch that your MechTech will know where to locate. Apple-Churchill put out the patch for free and thus the file can be easily located.
If the query returns with any other patch number, then it is a hardware issue. The fix is to do two things. First, find a compatible Narc beacon software file and load it into the targeting system memory, routing the MML launcher's logic to the targeting computer's "Narc" functionality. Once that is done, reboot the computer, while tapping lightly with a 8mm wrench at a point on the top of the computer casing exactly 12.7mm towards the center, measured from the top left corner of the casing (as if looking down on the top of the box).
If neither of those fixes work... I have no other advise. I hope this helps.

Oh god, please don't do this.
Update your phone.
Maybe an argument can be made to wait a week or two just in case there are bugs in the new update, but updates are crucial to your phone's security. Updating apps is also part of that security. Unless it is an app that has no internet requirement, you need to keep them current. And if an app is no longer being supported or updated, you should probably move on to the next best thing. Even if that sucks sometimes.
And I hate to defend Apple all the time, but you cannot make current judgments based on the freakin' iPhone 4. Apple currently makes some of the longest lasting products on the market. Not only that, they support those products with software updates for pretty much their entire lifespan. Google and Samsung were being praised this year for promising 5 and 7 years of updates. Apple has been doing this for years now. They never put a number on it, but if a phone can run the software, they support it.
In fact, the big story about Apple slowing down phones is always presented as them wanting people to buy new phones, but in that case they were actually trying to extend the life of people's devices. If they hadn't throttled the CPU, the battery would have bricked a bunch of phones. Their error was not disclosing what they were doing. They got sued for that and rightly so. All people needed was a battery swap and they'd be back to full speed. It's ridiculous that Apple didn't just disclose that from the beginning.
Also, the days of phones getting too old to run new software are pretty much over. Moore's Law is slowing down and phones are incredibly powerful and anything within the last 5 years or so will probably last 7 to 10 years if you take care of it. Depending on your use, you might need a battery swap, but you should only need to replace your phone sooner if there are features you absolutely need in the new model.
Apple's big sin is not planned obsolescence but repairability. Their products are well made. They last a long time. And they tend to have fewer manufacturing defects than other brands. (In general. Your anecdotal experiences will vary.)
But... shit happens.
People drop things. They spill things. They abuse things. And when they break, you shouldn't have to get a whole new thing. Apple seems to have poorly trained diagnostic staff who commonly tell people their device cannot be repaired when the diagnosis is not apparent. Or they will misdiagnose something with a super expensive repair when it is actually a minor fix. (Which is why experienced repair shops exist and should be supported by Apple.) Apple has tried to micro-manage the repair process of their devices to such a degree that it has sparked an entire advocacy movement.
But don't let Google, Samsung, etc off the hook either. They suck too. If you are using Android thinking you have some moral high ground, they either do the same shit or they do slightly different shit that is just as bad.
Not to mention, Google is an advertising company. I don't understand people who are like, "Apple is evil, so I'm going to use this advertising platform instead." It's a lateral move, at best.
No good guys in capitalism, folks.
At minimum, repair shops should be able to use spare parts from broken devices to fix salvageable ones. And Apple is literally pairing screens and chips to one device so they can't be used to fix others. It's... diabolical.
So, update your phones.
Apple is bad at repairability but is good as far as planned obsolescence goes. Although when computers and phones eventually are able to last for 20 years, we'll see if that changes. For now, they make things that last until you fumble them into the toilet bowl and *that* is when they start to suck.
If you need a good villain to talk about planned obsolescence, I would go with Samsung appliances.

@transienturl "kernel_task is highest gb usage at just below 14" oh—14 gigabytes, you're saying? I would consider that a red flag if it's above about one; that's probably part of the cause. google results aren't great on what actually causes it (if it's just kernel_task memory use rather then kernel_task cpu use). first things I'd do are reboot -> when time machine isn't doing a backup, run "first aid" on your hard drive from disk utility, and run the Apple Diagnostics tool. there are low level software bits called "kernel extensions" that could misbehave and cause that but they're hard to install and you'd probably know if you did; do you have any antivirus/antimalware software and/or do you remember rebooting your mac and holding down a button in order to install a component for discord audio capture? those are basically all I can think of for that category
eugh, damnit, duly noted. but no, i haven't installed anything like that or rebooted in that way. i do, technically, have antivirus/antimalware software through a vpn (which has had p standard/unremarkable showings in the activity monitor, and hasn't changed in the last week or two).
i'll try turning it off and restarting the app to see if that makes any immediate difference. yeah nope, that made no difference. will have to restart laptop again. //sigh.
kernel_task is at/near the top for both cpu & memory.
will definitely try the first aid & diagnostics. this fucking backup is running like molasses, unfortunately. all my backups are there, there's room for a new one, as far as i can tell, and i keep getting rid of the ones that stalled out and were "in progress". i might wait and do it tomorrow, to try and give time machine more time to finish this backup. still in MBs meanwhile have GBs to back up...:/ oh wait just hit 1 gb/30 gb.
i have no idea if it's relevant, bc sometimes it is in the most irritating ways--but my OS is big sur, 11.7.10
i avoid automatic updates because they're such huge pains in the ass, and i tend to wait until a new OS has had the bugs worked out before deciding to update to it. the newest, sierra i think? has had various glitches/problems with internet browsers, especially firefox, so i haven't wanted to update to that one.
however idk if that would be the main cause of either a slow passport/time machine backup, or this memory issue--my last backup that was saved was in november, which was 2 months after the latest OS came out. and all other apps and browsers are up to date and working without issue, as far as i can tell. i don't think anything even updated within the last week or two, which could've caused this. so yeah idk.
diagnostics tomorrow, then i guess. : /
thank you so much for your responses & help, i really appreciate it. this shit is so difficult to look up once you get past the "yeah, i refreshed firefox, there doesn't appear to be anything malicious eating up cpu/memory" stage, bc then ppls' issues tend to get v specific and not relevant at all to mine. lol esp bc i'm really not

MacBook Repair and Surface Repair: What You Need to Know
In the rapidly evolving world of technology, laptops have become indispensable tools for work, communication, and entertainment. Among the many choices available, MacBooks and Microsoft Surface devices stand out for their sleek designs and powerful capabilities. However, like any electronic device, they are not immune to wear and tear. When faced with issues, it's crucial to understand the intricacies of MacBook repair and Surface repair to make informed decisions about maintenance and troubleshooting.
Understanding the Basics:
MacBook Repair: MacBooks, renowned for their performance and reliability, run on Apple's proprietary software, macOS. When encountering issues with a MacBook, it's essential to identify whether the problem is hardware or software-related. Common MacBook hardware problems include malfunctioning keyboards, trackpads, and battery issues. On the software side, glitches in macOS, application errors, or system crashes may occur.
Surface Repair:
Microsoft's Surface lineup offers a versatile range of 2-in-1 devices that combine the power of a laptop with the flexibility of a tablet. Surface devices operate on Windows, and like MacBooks, they can face both hardware and software challenges. Issues such as touchscreen malfunctions, keyboard problems, and battery degradation fall under hardware concerns, while software issues may include system crashes, driver errors, or application conflicts.
DIY Troubleshooting:
Before rushing to a repair service, users can attempt some basic troubleshooting steps.
Software Troubleshooting: Restart the MacBook, update macOS, and run diagnostic tools.
Hardware Troubleshooting: Check for loose connections, test peripherals on another device, and inspect for physical damage.
Surface:
Software Troubleshooting: Restart the device, update Windows, and run the built-in troubleshooter.
Hardware Troubleshooting: Detach and reattach the keyboard (if applicable), test external peripherals, and inspect the device for physical damage.
When to Seek Professional Help:
MacBook Repair:
While some users may feel confident in performing minor repairs, such as replacing a MacBook battery or upgrading storage, certain issues require professional intervention. Problems with the logic board, screen, or intricate components demand specialized skills and tools. Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) or Apple Stores are recommended for such complex repairs to ensure genuine parts and expertise.
Surface Repair:
Similar to MacBooks, Microsoft Surface devices are best handled by professionals when encountering significant hardware issues. Attempting to disassemble a Surface device without expertise can lead to further damage. Microsoft offers an out-of-warranty service for Surface devices, and authorized repair centers are equipped to handle various repairs, from screen replacements to battery upgrades.
Cost Considerations:
Before proceeding with any repair, it's crucial to weigh the cost against the age and value of the device. In some cases, investing in a repair may be more economical than purchasing a new device. For both MacBooks and Surface devices, obtaining a quote from an authorized service provider can help users make informed decisions.
Future-Proofing Through Maintenance:
Preventive measures can extend the lifespan of both MacBooks and Surface devices. Regular software updates, proper storage, and careful handling contribute to longevity. Additionally, investing in protective cases, keyboard covers, and screen protectors can mitigate the risk of physical damage.
Conclusion:
MacBook repair and Surface repair require a nuanced understanding of the devices' intricacies. While some troubleshooting can be done at home, critical issues demand professional attention. The decision to repair or replace should be based on factors such as the nature of the problem, the device's age, and the cost of repair. In the fast-paced world of technology, being well-informed about these considerations ensures that users can make the best choices for the maintenance and longevity of their beloved devices.

Okay, small tech rant for y'all.
This is (part of) why Apple products are expensive.
Because other companies discount the product they sell you, so that they can sell you to data brokers.
Seriously, we tested this a few years ago. We put an Amazon echo, a Google Home, and an Apple HomePod on a network one at a time and ran packet sniffing software on the router to see what they reported back to.
The Echo and Home were both reporting back data constantly, even when not in use. Analytics, location data, diagnostics, you name it.
The HomePod however, checked in every few minutes with a single 'heartbeat' packet (basically "hey, I'm still online"), and then only sent other data when it was actively in use.
Apple (mostly) just charge you to make up the profit difference that other companies make by selling off your data.
Privacy matters, even if you 'have nothing to hide', identity theft is a bad time.
🥹
#there's a whole bunch of extra factors that go into determine the price of a product#i really hate how often i have to go to bat for a trillion dollar company#they've done plenty of morally dodgy shit#but making a basic laptop $2000 isn't one of them

In today's connected world, a car's infotainment system is as crucial as its engine. For Toyota owners, having a reliable and intuitive navigation radio can transform every journey, making it more convenient, enjoyable, and efficient. Whether you're looking to upgrade an older model or maximize the features of a new one, understanding your options for Toyota navigation radios is key.
The Heart of Your Journey: What a Navigation Radio Offers
Modern navigation radios for Toyota vehicles go far beyond simply providing directions. They are integrated hubs offering a suite of features designed to enhance your driving experience:
Real-time Navigation: Gone are the days of paper maps. With live traffic updates and dynamic routing, you can avoid congestion and reach your destination faster. Many systems offer turn-by-turn voice guidance, making it easy to follow directions without taking your eyes off the road.
Smartphone Integration: Seamlessly connect your smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This allows you to access your favorite navigation apps (like Google Maps or Waze), stream music, make hands-free calls, and even send messages, all displayed on your car's screen.
Multimedia Entertainment: Beyond navigation, these units often include AM/FM radio, SiriusXM compatibility, USB ports for media playback, and Bluetooth audio streaming, ensuring you always have your preferred soundtrack for the road.
Vehicle Information: Some advanced systems can display crucial vehicle data, such as fuel efficiency, tire pressure, and even diagnostics, right on the touchscreen.
Voice Control: "Hey Toyota" and other voice commands allow you to control navigation, music, and calls without touching the screen, promoting safer driving.
Over-the-Air Updates: Many newer Toyota systems offer over-the-air (OTA) updates for maps and software, ensuring your system always has the latest information and features.
OEM vs. Aftermarket: Making the Right Choice for Your Toyota
When considering a navigation radio for your Toyota, you generally have two main avenues: Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) units or aftermarket alternatives.
OEM Toyota Navigation Radios: These are genuine Toyota parts, designed and manufactured specifically for your vehicle model.
Pros: Guaranteed perfect fit, seamless integration with existing vehicle systems (like steering wheel controls and backup cameras), consistent quality, and often covered by Toyota's warranty.
Cons: Typically more expensive than aftermarket options, and the features may be limited to what was available at the time of your car's manufacturing.
Toyota's "Dynamic Navigation" and "Smart Connect" are examples of their latest OEM offerings, providing advanced features and connectivity.
Aftermarket Navigation Radios: These are produced by third-party manufacturers and offer a wide range of features, designs, and price points.
Pros: Often more affordable, wider variety of features (larger screens, more powerful processors, advanced Android OS), and can offer a more modern look or functionality to older vehicles. Many come with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and some even integrate with vehicle-specific data like AC controls.
Cons: Installation can be more complex and may require additional wiring harnesses or dash kits. Quality can vary significantly between brands, and compatibility with existing OEM features might not be as seamless. Warranty coverage typically comes from the aftermarket manufacturer, not Toyota.
Installation and Common Considerations
Installing a navigation radio can range from a simple plug-and-play process for some aftermarket units to a more involved procedure for others. If you're not comfortable with automotive electronics, professional installation is always recommended.
Common issues with car radios and infotainment systems, including navigation, can include:
Freezing or Unresponsive Displays: Often resolved with a system reboot or software update.
Bluetooth Connectivity Problems: Can stem from software glitches, outdated firmware, or pairing errors.
Navigation Glitches: Inaccurate directions, slow map loading, or freezing can be caused by software bugs or GPS signal issues. Regular map updates are crucial.
Audio Issues: Distorted sound, low volume, or no sound can indicate faulty wiring, speaker problems, or amplifier issues.
Regular software updates, whether through Toyota's connected services or by downloading updates for aftermarket units, are vital for optimal performance and to resolve many common issues.
Elevate Your Toyota Driving Experience
A well-chosen navigation radio can significantly enhance your Toyota ownership experience. Whether you opt for the integrated reliability of an OEM system or the feature-rich versatility of an aftermarket unit, having clear directions, seamless smartphone connectivity, and a host of entertainment options at your fingertips makes every drive a more enjoyable adventure. Explore the possibilities and find the perfect navigation radio to complement your Toyota and your lifestyle.
