Entry 10 : Train in Rain

Rain is when drops of water fall from sky. Animals becomes alerted, floor gets wet, dirt is soaked, and people run indoors. Rain come in different degrees, from slight sprinkles to massive downpour. The atmosphere during rain was cool and relaxing, but became fearful and annoyance when the rain becomes too much. Despite these conditions, the vehicles still move.

Hello again from Indy! This entry came out of nowhere. While I was at Bang Sue Junction Station, it rained and gradually evolved into a massive rainstorm. It was cold and wet, but there are always train running here and there like usual. To me, it felt strangely mystical and pleasant, and this is the story of it.

An Ordinary Day

At this point, it should be clear that I really really like trains. I’ve been writing multiple entries dedicated to trains and train stations, or included them as parts. On the morning of 27th April, I decided to go to Bang Sue just to look at trains because it rained the previous night. It was cool and relaxing in the morning, but it gradually gotten hotter during the afternoon. When I reached Bang Sue, it was sunny and blazingly hot once again.

I bought water and snack to eat while watching a few trains go by. To others, this might seem very ordinary and boring day, but for me, it’s always a fun activity. Everytime I see trains, I feel energized and strangely content. After I finished snacks, there was an announcement that Taksinarat Special Express is coming soon, so I took a little walk to the other side of the platforms.

It was hot, even not in direct sunlight. It feels somewhat hot and humid at the same time. I wished the clouds had moved back for some more relief from sunlight, but it didn’t happen (yet). I waited and waited until the train came near, and took a photo. When the train left, I immediately jumped back into the shades on platform 2.

There wasn’t much around at that time except ordinary and rapid trains. People taking their belongings and get on their trains. It was a very ordinary day at the station.

Darkening

(It’s kind of dark here)

(No more bright sunlight)

(It was still hot even without sunlight. Sounds like incoming rain)

Time passed, as seen in the pictures above. It gradually darkens but still remained hot. Then soon came large raindrops, but only for grand total of 3 seconds, then it stopped. I thought it wasn’t going to rain anymore, so I stayed.

I was wrong, it rained. Though, at first it didn’t rain so much and it cooled down the area so greatly. This is my first ever time to see train in rain, I wouldn’t miss this chance!

Lights on and wet train. It’s a rare sight for me. Despite many of my train rides, I’ve never encountered rain during the ride. I can hardly imagine how it would feel inside the cars during the rain. However, now I could see train in rain, and my heart danced. The train looked so beautiful and strong even when soaked in rain. The cool air and rainy condition gave this sight a strange sensation.

Storm

The rain eventually increased from slight rain to heavy rain. Water starts to leak from weak part on the station’s old, poorly maintained roofs. Uneven floor and weird position of rain gutter downpipes caused water to pool at random spots in the station areas. Bang Sue is surely in bad state.

The original Bang Sue Junction Station building and the passenger platforms are scheduled to close when Bang Sue Central Station opens. It is most likely for this reason that the original Bang Sue is in such condition and there are no plans of major repairs.

Trains come and go, come and go. With each train passed, the rain seemed to increase. The rails are wet and reflects off the lights, making them look shinier than usual.

(Wet and slippery)

From that point onwards, the rain quickly worsened and became a full package rainstorm. So much rain, and very strong winds. All trolley and temporary stall vendors fled. People under the roof opened their umbrella to shield the wind and raindrops. I did so too, but it was pretty much a futile attempt. The wind changed direction often and splashes from downpipes hit from almost every direction. I gave up trying to not get wet, and instead, took photos of the atmosphere.

There were also occasional lightning flashes and roaring thunder. Some of them startled me and made me jump. I had to delete some of the pictures because they were indiscernible ToT. It was strange that day because there were more old people terrified or cowering than the children  who do during the thunder rampage. Surprisingly, the children and toddlers near me seemed excited.

Enduring the cold storm and waiting for the chance to run into underground MRT station, I waited and waited. The storm did not lessen nor showed signs of stopping anytime soon. The pools kept on expanding and eventually, some areas are capable of submerging entire man’s ankle.

A train stopped at platform 4, the farthest one and the passengers frantically ran down, jump over ponds and puddles, including the nearly flooded rails of platform 2. The panic and splashes, accompanied by rumbling thunder made it almost seemed as if this was a show.

No matter how hard the rainstorm is, the trains never stop their service. (Unless something gets in the way or water level is too high). Rain may be a difficult obstacle for a human with a single umbrella, but it is not for trains.

Run Away

I waited until the train left. I decided that I should not wait any longer. I couldn’t find any food or go home if I waited. To travel anywhere, I have to cross the streets to go underground and catch MRT train. The storming rain, slippery floor, and pooled areas proved difficulties on my attempts, but I eventually did it!

Cold and wet from the rain, I went downstairs into the station.. Into colder areas because of air-conditioning. It was freezing inside the underground train ;w;

At the end of the day, I managed to get home safe and sound. The winds and cooling indoors have dried all soaked parts on my clothes. By time my mother picked me up, I was almost completely dry. It was a fun little unexpected adventure, but it was great! I hope there’s another fun and exciting one again soon!

Anyways before I go, here’s to sum it up. “Afternoon, soaked in sweat. Evening, wet in rain. Awesome train, storm can’t stop”
