i can't do an april wrap-up/monthly book recommendation post because i only finished one book in april, and it was a short story(🥴)
april was a month of travelling, of exploring, and of heartbreak (having to reject an offer from oxford because i can't afford relocating rn is going to haunt me for the rest of my life). reading, for the first time in a long time, hasn't been a priority for me, and that feels really good??

April 2025 Wrap Up
This feels like it's been the longest month ever. There's been so much stuff going on. Two of my friends have defended their dissertations (successfully!), and I finished my third chapter and started the final one. I've had to go to a funeral. There's been holidays and birthdays and just SO much! It's as if a whole year has happened just in April.
Books Read: 13
Great reading month, huh? To be fair, five are picture books. Dreamer's Pool was definitely the favorite of the month. And my least favorite was probably Gulliver's Travels.
Midnight Pearls by Debbie Viguié - 2.5 stars
Little Red Riding Hood by Trina Schart Hyman - 5 stars
Saint George and the Dragon by Margaret Hodges, illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman - 5 stars
Swan Lake by Margot Fonteyn, illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman - 4 stars
Ghost Cat by Eve Bunting, illustrated by Kevin M. Barry - 4 stars
The Wild Swans by Amy Ehrlich, illustrated by Susan Jeffers - 4 stars
Sappho translated by Mary Barnard - 3.5 stars
Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift - 2.5 stars
Dreamer's Pool by Juliet Marillier - 5 stars
Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali - 4 stars
Lila by Marilynne Robinson - 4 stars
Praying with Jane Eyre: Reflections on Reading as a Sacred Practice by Vanessa Zoltan - 2.5 stars
Daisy Miller by Henry James - 3 stars
Books DNFed: 1
And one DNF, which is always disappointing. I've had this one on my shelves forever, so I figured I should give it a try. I'm unhauling it now.
Elmet by Fiona Mozley - I read the first 70 pages and just wasn't into it.

(Belated) April 2025 Reading Wrap Up!

I read 6 books last month! Not as many as I hoped, but a couple of those were absolute bricks, and another was Eileen, which was a slog.
Reading Stats
Read:
The Priory of the Orange Tree - Samantha Shannon ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (...technically, finished April 1)
The Silver Coin - Michael Walsh, Chip Zdarsky, Kelly Thompson, Ed Brisson, Jeff Lemire ⭐⭐⭐
A Day of Fallen Night - Samantha Shannon ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Don't Sleep with the Dead - Nghi Vo ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
Dolphin Diaries vols 1-3 bindup - Ben M. Baglio ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (the nostalgia is real)
Eileen - Ottessa Moshfegh ⭐⭐⭐
Currently Reading:
Borne - Jeff Vandermeer (reread)
Acquisitions

I acquired 4 books this month - 3 from the little free library and one from a thrift store. I should probably stop picking up books as my shelves are quite full, but at least I didn't spend much on them this month?
Little Free Library:
Why We Act Like Canadians - Pierre Berton
The Devil in the White City - Erik Larson
Uncertain Voyage - Dorothy Gilman
Thrift Store:
Princess Academy - Shannon Hale
Goals for May
May is going to be a busy month--my aunt and grandma are visiting for a week, and my aunt is staying with me, which is the first time ever I'll have a guest staying for more than one night. So I'm not going to make any wild goals, but I have a few things I'd like to accomplish:
Start reading every day again instead of spending my lunch breaks on social media (...or actually start exercise biking again since I need to build leg muscles for hiking, and read then)
Get into another manga series, probably either Blue Morning (I read books 1-3 at the start of the year, and have books 4-8 on my tbr) or Witch Hat Atelier: Kitchen, which I can get from the library.
Try "daisychaining" inspired by @bigcats-birds-and-books - basically making a short TBR list bases on similar threads between books. My attempts at longer TBR list have fallen through but maybe if I keep it short and themed I can make it work...
Start book journaling again. I stopped sometime last month and haven't picked it up again, but I feel like it's much more helpful to write my thoughts somewhere physical than to just launch them into the ether.

April 2024 Wrap Up
Not me posting my April wrap up over halfway through May...
Books Read: 13
Look at all these! I mean, to be fair, five are picture books. But still. My favorite was, of course, The Sunshine Court. I can't believe that the year of our lord 2024 gave us a new All for the Game book. It was amazing! My least favorite was The Biographer's Tale. A serious disappointment from the author of one of my favorite books. I was also unable to finish Apt Pupil, although I thought it was well-written. Almost too well-written. I was seriously disturbed. Books marked with ® are rereads.
Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King - 4 stars
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness - 4 stars
In the night I dream of home by Vagelis Iliopoulos, illustrated by Hariton Bekiaris - 4 stars
The Sleeping Beauty retold and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman - 4 stars
The Idiot by Elif Batuman - 4 stars
Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey - 4 stars
Molly by Joseph S. Bonsall, illustrated by Erin Marie Mauterer - 4 stars ®
Sea Tale by Gail E. Haley - 4 stars ®
An Ellis Island Christmas by Maxinne Rhea Leighton, illustrated by Dennis Nolan - 4 stars ®
Daniel Deronda by George Eliot - 5 stars ®
The Biographer's Tale by A. S. Byatt - 2 stars
The Sunshine Court by Nora Sakavic - 5 stars
The Ways of Life by Margaret Oliphant - 4.5 stars
Books DNFed: 1
Apt Pupil by Stephen King - due to violent animal death
