look i just think that Dean, eventually, would have sat Cas down in the Dean-Cave to watch Lord of the Rings with him (because they're amazing films). And they'd get to Rivendell, and Arwen would give Aragorn the Evenstar pendant and Dean would remember and be like oh shit. and that line - the "it was a gift. keep it" - that doesn't come yet for a few scenes and Dean would be sitting there sweating.
But Cas. Cas wouldn't be paying that much mind at all. Because honestly I don't know that he'd pay a terribly large amount of attention to the films at that point, not the beginning. It's charming and all, but not especially interesting. He watches most of whatever Dean asks, because Dean enjoys them and Cas wants to spend time with him. But he usually pays more attention to Dean than to whatever is on the screen. Until Dean starts acting kinda cagey and weird and then Cas starts paying more attention to the couple on screen - this ethereal immortal elf and her human warrior lover. And this question of if she would give up immortality and her people to be with her lover, that would catch his eye.
And I think that maybe Cas wouldn't really catch on at first, he'd pay attention through the Council of Elrond and nod along like ah yes, a heroic quest to stop evil, i understand why Dean likes this now. And the movies would continue and he'd pay attention, but I think Arwen would stick in his mind even though she doesn't get a lot of screen time. He doesn't say anything about the mixtape or the Evenstar but he's paying attention now and Dean is still sweating.
When Eowyn comes in Cas likes her, and he respects her, but he also seems so disappointed, because its clear that she's interested in Aragorn, and surely that's a better match, right? Like Aragorn would have more in common with a human, and she's brave and free-spirited and amazing, of course he's likely to end up with her instead. It makes sense and it makes Cas heartsick. And they'd reach that point in the films where Elrond is trying to persuade Arwen to leave, the point where she turns back, and suddenly Cas is riveted. He has to know what happens to her. He has to know if Arwen lives, if Aragorn will reciprocate Eowyn's feelings, or if Arwen and Aragorn get to be together after all.
And when she appears at Minas Tirith I think he'd burst into tears i.e. tears just pouring down his face while he stares at the screen oblivious that he's even crying. And Dean is like righteously freaked out at this point because he's watched a ton of movies with Cas and his reactions always vary, anywhere from confused disinterest to mildly engaged but he's never seen Cas so moved by a piece of film before. And Dean can't even pay attention to the end cause he's busy watching Cas. And Cas has never resonated so much with a fictional character in his life as Arwen Undómiel.
And Dean's like, still mildly concerned as the credits for RotK roll and is like "How'd you like it buddy?" and Cas is so serious and so heartfelt when he tell Dean that he loved it and thanks him for sharing it with him.
idk where things go from there i just keep envisioning this from time to time Castiel is Arwen-coded ty for coming to my tedtalk

"Yes Arwen," Glorfindel told her drily. "It is of course inconceivable that Lord Elrond of Imladris — an elf so insufferably overcommitted to bureaucracy he once tried to implement and risk assess a regional policy for the baking of Lembas until Galadriel told him where he could shove his bread — might ever decide to stick around and micromanage the upbringing of his grandson." Moments from a world in which Elrond stays to watch Eldarion grow up.

when thorongil was serving in the gondorian army, there would be periods of time when he would look north-west with a look of such longing that rumors started about how he was banished from the north because he fell in love with some nobles daughter.
flash-forward to cormellen and aragorn is standing on a hill overlooking the camp-town when prince imrahil (who was (fanon) his squire/serving under thorongil during those days), legolas, gimli and eomer, come up to join him.
after a few minutes of silence, aragorn just blurts out, “I miss Arwen.”
legolas responds, “Its been maybe 4 months since you saw her last, haven’t you two been courting for 40 or so years?”
“I miss Arwen, Legolas.”

#WIP! I'm losing steam on this tonight, but i felt like sharing it :>
you ever think about how there were probably tons of paintings and sculptures and art of Arwen around Rivendell, considering her beauty and status as the daughter of the lord of the house,, and how little Estel (Aragorn) probably grew up looking at these pieces of art, falling in love with her and the stories about her,, i have a whole story idea around this concept :'>
and then the lucky guy gets to grow up and marry his blorbo how absolutely iconic of him

Oooo just ran into this and got reminded again how much love and hurt in merthur
Somehow can see Dean in Arthur, all wounded and bloody, but strong and such a leader. And Cas/Merlin is the one with all the magic, all powerful, but keeps everything to themselves. And immortal, had to wait by the lake for a thousand years for the mortal lover to come back.
Remember yesterday saw a post about Cas and Dean watching LotR together and they feel so related to the love between Aragorn/Arwen. The immortal gives up their immortality for the human lover.
Destiel should watch Merlin too, Cas would love Merlin.
Or Doctor Who, whether it's Doctor/Rose, Doctor/River, or any of Doctor's human companion/lover really, the immortals fall in love with this short-lived species, fall in love with this one human being that is so special they change their whole long immortal life
Love all of them. Guess that says so much about my type.
Usually the sad ending, angsty type.

The Great Impossible
by timelessutterances (@balrogballs)
"It is three hundred years before Arwen tells Elrond, offhand in a conversation about something else, that on one rainy night two months after Celebrìan sailed, Maglor saved her life without knowing it. She says it in passing, like it's something obvious, something she expects him to already know." On Maglor as a grandfather, and the aftereffects of an impossible choice made on the darkest day in Imladris.

forth au is where boromir os born 15 years later than in canon making him like,, 26 at the council (i think idk) and findulas dies when he is 11. boromir hits 16 and is sent to war, at 19 he almost dies from an illness anf denethor realized that he needs to better secure the bloodline so instead of the rational thing and making boromir marry and sire a child, DENETHOR MARRIES A GIRL CLOSE IN AGE TO BOROMIR AND A YEAR LATER FARAMIR IS BORN.
denethor is the only one who sees nothing wrong with this. both the girl and boromir are EXTREMELY awkward to each other until the eventually decide to just treat each othet as siblings. denethor is somehow not a shitty father to faramir because you have to actually be present in the child’s life to be a parent 🙃.
so anyway that combined with how some of the lords at court look at a 7 year old faramir is what prompts boromir and denethor’s wife to put every ounce of persuasion into convincing denethor to let boromir take faramir with him to rivendell
so they get to rivendell, exhausted and sweaty and dirty from the road and boromir manages to both 1. realize that he is into both men, and elves. and 2. embarrass himself in front of two VERY pretty people (aragorn anf arwin are thinking that he’s cute) and the council happens and so now boromir needs to find someone to care for faramir and arwin agrees and boromir is fighting for his life from his feelings for both of them
it takes 2 weeks for elrond to start referring to faramir as ‘grandchild’ in his head and another half-week for faramir to become his favorite (hes the only grandchild but this ranking is including his children)
