“SIX IDOLS” – “SPRINT DREAM” (Part 5 / End)

That day, Maki Arakawa (29) was visiting the Tsubakimon Dome hotel with her husband Takashi Arakawa (32) and their son Daichi Arakawa (0).
That day was Maki and Takashi's third wedding anniversary. The Dome Hotel was the place where Takashi proposed to Maki, and it was customary for the couple to visit this place on their anniversary every year.
With a new family member who is less than a year old, Maki and Takashi huddled together and wanted a night view from the living room. Takashi leans into the champagne and Maki leans into the non-alcoholic sparkling wine, looking at each other with a smile. In Maki's arms, Daichi, who had just fallen asleep, was giving a silent sigh.
A little compliment to a family that usually leads a modest life. Still, Maki was happy enough until the explosion happened.
The moment the explosion caught her, Maki was thrown to the ground with her husband.
When she woke up, her head was covered in black smoke.
"Daichi?"
The first thing that came to mind was the safety of her son. Looking down into her arms with a pale feeling, Daichi was still asleep. It was just a moment of relief, and he was soon filled with smoke-colored anxiety.
"What the hell?"
There was no way to answer that question. Her husband has wandered off a bit. He appears passed out, bleeding from his head. When she saw him, she was terrified that his heart would stop, but at least he seemed to be breathing.
Maki crawls closer to her husband, feeling pain glowing throughout her body. There seems to be a fire somewhere between the black smoke that comes in and the heat that burns the skin. That fact irritated Maki and made her reach out her hand.
"Get up."
The husband does not respond. Maki raised her face slightly and looked around her.
There is no one but them.
Is it after everyone has evacuated? Have they been left behind? Even if she gets lost, she does not know where to go and cannot leave her husband. It was decided that she cannot take him or her son on her own.
Fear and anxiety clench Maki's throat.
She takes the PDA out of her pocket and touches the emergency number. However, Maki herself wasn't sure how much it meant. The fear that surrounds her is getting stronger. Even if the rescue team is dispatched from now on, will they arrive in time?
"Yes, what happened?"
Communication has been opened. Maki squeezes the words out of her throat that moisten her body.
“Please help, please help. Please, please."
Unless this child is saved.
The moment he muttered a sentence-like word in a weak voice, a roar deafened Maki's ear.
A helicopter appeared outside the living room, behind a glass window.
A high-speed rotating rotor disperses a bombardment sound and the strong wind moves in the opposite direction. The helicopter tilted slightly and a sliding door pointed into the living room. Maki saw with wide eyes that a man with glasses was standing in the place that had already been opened.
It was not a rescue team. She knew it at a glance. After all, clothes are different. She had never heard of a rescue team dressed in such white, flowing clothing. It has beautiful bright colors and is like the clothes that idols wear.
The man with the glasses laughs smartly when he sees Maki. Then jump out the sliding door with a run.
"......"
Maki loses her words and watches over the elaborate suicide scene. From the PDA that fell to the ground, a Fire Service official said, "What happened? Please respond!" She heard a scream, but couldn't react. That was not the case.
The man crossed his arms, jumped high and rough, through the window, rolled across the living room floor, and landed brilliantly.
He balanced on his right foot, left knee, and right palm, and lifts his face to look at Maki.
Then he said with a smile.
"Hello."
"Ah, hello."
Barely responding, the man approached slowly, keeping low.
Behind him, there was a figure that jumped in the same way. He rolls on a glass covered floor, jumps and screams.
"Gak! The glass stabs me!"
“Domyoji-kun, continue with the preparations immediately. Be careful not to inhale smoke."
"Yes! President Munakata!"
When the man named Munakata approached Maki, he lifted his body, turned it forward, and began to wrap something.
"Oh, that...?"
“We will get away from this. Please hold your son firmly."
The soft voice in her ear soothed Maki's fear. She hugged her son tightly and, through her armpits, Munakata fixed a harness on Maki's body.
Munakata looks back and calls out to Domyoji, who is also wrapping the husband in a harness.
"Are you ready?"
"Well, somehow!"
Domyoji nods wrapping her weakly passed out husband around his body with a harness. When Munakata turned around, he turned his smart eyes towards Maki.
"Don't worry, I'll get you to safety immediately."
Somehow, however, she had an unpleasant sensation.
Maki looks out the window with her harness wrapped up. She sees the back of a helicopter that was going very far away. Maki asks, swallowing hard.
"Isn't that the one you ride?"
"Unfortunately, the emergency exit leading to the helipad is blocked by fire. Landing is difficult and jumping from here to the helicopter would not be possible with you in tow."
The question of what to do then did not need to be asked.
Munakata walks over to the broken window while tying Maki and Daichi to himself. The trampled piece of glass rings. A strong wind from the high sky blew and caressed Maki's cheeks forcefully.
The Tsubakimon Dome can be seen below. She wonders if he was doing some kind of live performance, and she could see the crowded seats even from such a high place.
Munakata looks at her calmly and has a soft voice.
"And we have less than five minutes to get started. This is the only way to get there on time."
She is not sure what you are talking about, but she understands what "this method" means. Maki looks towards Munakata with tears in her eyes.
"I'll ask you just in case, you've done it before, right?"
Munakata responds with a smile on his face.
"I read the manual."
Maki tried to resist, but her hands were empty and only scratched the air. Maki, who was shaking, saw that she could no longer understand the language, Munakata placed the sole of the shoe on the window frame.
Smooth to the end, Munakata says the last sentence.
"Ok, let's go."
"Hm..."
She can't say wait a minute.
Munakata was a man who executed words. A second after he said that, he had already jumped from a height of 100 meters above the ground with Maki and Daichi.

Basically the longer it takes to fall, the faster it will fall.

The parent's "up and down" game and the current situation may not change much for this child. With that in mind, Munakata precisely operates the parachute.
Air resistance travels through the harness and squeezes Munakata's body. Munakata looked at the Tsubakimon Dome below, while reducing the burden on mother and child as much as possible. Already in his direction, the dome has been opened to reveal the stage.
"President, please respond. Let us know the current situation!"
Awashima's voice echoes from the device close to the ear. Munakata responds to that.
"This is Munakata. We are currently gliding about 70 meters from the earth's surface. We will proceed to land on stage."
In the center of the stage is a circle of bureaucracy, the end of today's sprint. There are 2 minutes and 47 seconds until the start. The image of landing, taking off the parachute, and entering the performance has already been created in Munakata's mind.
"No problem. Everything is fine. Awashima-kun, let's meet up on stage sleeve!"
At the image of Munakata, a sudden gust of wind disappeared.
"Yes!"
Before thinking of anything, Munakata had to devote all his energy to controlling his posture. The parachute, which was about to rotate like a cone, was operated with one hand like a hot kneading jumper, and in the worst case it prevented a free fall due to the disappearance of air resistance.
"President? What did you do?"
Awashima screamed at the anomaly.
"Well, it's not a big deal. I was exposed to the wind from the building and my posture was altered for a moment. The check was completed, but there is a problem."
"What kind of problem is it?"
“The current gust of wind has blown me off the field a lot. If nothing is done, we will land in the audience seats."
Awashima took a deep breath.
Due to the gust of wind, the chances of landing on stage were nil. A similar gust of wind might bring the whole picture back to the landing course, but it's like waiting for a miracle. It was the role of the believer, not the role of the idol, to hold onto heaven with prayer.
Munakata ponders as he spins in the air.
He cannot get off in the audience seats. No action can be taken that could compromise the safety of the public. Not only Munakata himself, but even the metal parachute hardware cannot be dropped on the heads of fans.
So there is only one way left.
"We will take a landing course outside of the dome. We won't be in time for the performance, but we can't help it."
Awashima squeezed out a rough voice.
"Come here."
Until now, Munakata has been racing to get to the performance on time and not disappoint the expectations of the fans. It is not unfortunate that the effort turns into a bubble.
However…
Munakata stroked the baby's hair, giggling happily at his mother's breast, with his fingertips.
"Don't be sorry. We are idols. Those who seek the best. But if that doesn't come true, we can choose the next best option."
"President..."
Awashima's voice has a bitter resignation.
But she was also an idol. Awashima starts working after dispelling it in an instant.
"I get it. Immediately, personnel will be sent to the outside of the cupola, and the president, the mother and the child will be immediately collected. Even if the delay is unavoidable, it should be as short as possible."
"Yes. Thank you."
A sudden voice interrupted Munakata who was about to approve the decision.
"It's not like that."
Munakata slightly opened his eyes.
He can't be wrong, it was the voice of Fushimi Saruhiko, the center of "Shoumutai".
"What are you doing?"
"Please be quiet, Assistant Principal. President, there is no need to change course. 2 minutes to start. If so, it is time to do so."
"What?"
"Akiyama, do it."
With Fushimi's command as the trigger, a sight of pure white spread under his eyes.
It was a huge cloth that completely covered the audience seats at the Tsubakimon Dome. The pure white fabric that glows under the light has a blue dyed stamp in the center. That's the emblem of “Promotion Scepter 4”, the flag of the idol that they should be proud of.
"Now you don't have to worry about landing in the audience. Please come down quickly. The stage is set!"
Watch the scene and listen to the words.
A powerful smile appeared on Munakata's mouth.
"I get it."
Then she slowly descends towards the emblem of his proud "Promotion Scepter 4".

"Huh... someone..."
In a park located outside the Tsubakimon Dome, Domyoji Andy was trapped in a tree and called for help with a weak voice.
The rescued person, tied in front, fainted slightly. After all, he never woke up during the drop or after the landing. He doesn't think there is any difference in life, but he wants to be rescued as soon as possible and taken to the hospital. It's about time Domyoji's shoulders scream from their weight.
"Oh, Domyoji-san! You were in a place like this!"
At that moment, a light illuminated Domyoji's face with a voice of salvation.
They were the staff of "Scepter 4." It looks like he was holding a ladder and looking around the dome. Domyoji mutters through tears when he sees them preparing for rescue.
"Hail me..."
Domyoji, who was saved several tens of seconds later, asked the staff with a deep sigh.
“No, what happened to the president? Did he do it on time?"
"Yes! It seems that with Fushimi-san's ingenuity, he was able to make it in time for the performance! It seems that he is performing well as of now!"
The staff deftly pulled out the PDA which projected a live image.
6:23 pm. The stage lights go out and the noise from the audience seats quickly subsides. For example, fans' expectations, enthusiasm and excitement increase.
The silence of passion, as if you could see it.
A suddenly glowing spotlight pierced the darkness.
In the center of the stage was a man crouched with one knee raised. He is dressed in a beautifully decorated suit and holds a microphone in his slim hands. There is not a single mistake or a single wrinkle in his clothes. The ideal idol is that person, the Idol King who was there.
Those in the audience, behind the television who are watching him, probably don't know how he got to that stage. Munakata must say that it is also the idol's responsibility not to report it.
As soon as the song started, Munakata looked up. A confident smile. An act that can be said to be solemn. Take a fixed turn and start singing.
Domyoji laughed impressively as he watched the fans' enthusiasm explode.
"I'm glad. He is on time."
"Yeah, I'm glad."
The staff laughs too. Only they know how many difficulties Munakata had to go through to be in that place. These difficulties have finally been overcome and the goal has come true.
"Well then, I'm ready too."
Domyoji says that, shaking his head. He also has a major role in the "Extreme solo part, Idol from Above 6500~". For that, he has to go back to heaven.
The staff stopped Domyoji's back.
"Domyoji-san, it's very difficult to tell... but Domyoji-san's part is gone."
"Eh?"
The staff scratched their heads at Domyoji, where their eyes became a point.
“It seems that it is impossible to take off on time because the helicopter has run out of fuel on the previous flight. Therefore, we will reproduce the PV of the album released next week as a replacement for the emergency. That was decided."
Domyoji froze and said...
"What is that? Has all my special training so far been for naught?"
Look at the facial expressions of the staff, quietly but surely.
"What is that? Aaaaaaaaaah!"
Domyoji's scream echoed around the outer edge of the dome.

Thoughts on Zero One and Kiramager so far + extra (Spoilers)
Man it has been a while since I’ve done this. I was a bit uncertain to really come back and speak my mind on these since I feel what I say doesn’t really matter, I tend to fear what I say could be an unpopular opinion and get flack for it. I’m still hesitant on writing but I felt like wanting to write again after so long. I don’t know if I’ll bring this back but we’ll see. A lot has happened with Toku that’s surprising, I’m surprised how much Toku has been slowly getting itself up to be official over here thanks to various services like discotek and Shout Factory, in an age where you can officially watch the original Kamen Rider series and Kuuga online, If you told me that 5 years ago, I wouldn’t know what to believe.
Recap:
Been three years since I’ve done this iirc, but here’s My thoughts on the seasons I never wrote my full thoughts on.
Kyuranger: This was an up and down series for me. When I first started, I was hating it, due to awful pacing and was doing an awful job of establishing characters, especially Lucky who was hitting the marks of why I disliked Right and Takaharu, thankfully the series picked itself up around the second quarter with Scorpio’s arc and introducing Tsurugi. Would later go down and up with each arc but In my opinion, ended on a decent note. It does suck it never had a crossover with Zyuohger but I did enjoy the Space Squad crossover, which utilized the strengths of the characters really well and was ultimately satisfying.
Ex-Aid: Ex-Aid was a series I was a bit skeptical by but was one over by the end. I enjoyed Emu and his adventures and I give props for the show having two female Riders (Nico counts, fight me!). If there’s an issue, it’d be that I wish they’d just end with the crossover movie cause I feel the V-cinema’s felt like tacked on alternate endings, I do give them credit for trying to connect it to other films.
Lupinranger vs Patranger: A series I’ve seen that’s either enjoyed or disliked. I’m in the former and do like that they experimented with the concept of two different teams. I dig the idea that the Lupins are influenced by more modern Sentai that get the gimmick of the episode while the Pat’s are more akin to classic seasons where they just focus on the Monster, also doesn’t help that Japan has very low views on their justice system so the Lupins are more favorable. Plus I loved the way it ended on an open note, much like how Sanjo tends to do in his writing.
Amazons: Another divisive series and I’m leaning towards those that dislike it.On its own, it’s alright but as a series that uses elements from a classic series, it mostly is superficial in how it uses it cause the original series was remembered for how violent it could be, but there was more to it than just mindless violence. Also doesn’t help the producer’s comment on how “Recent Rider’s aren’t interesting, this series will give it it’s fangs back” saying the shows before it were not good when they were enjoyed by a lot fans. I do give the series credit for trying to write a gray moral type of setting but its flimsily written that it can come off as irritating,, especially around Season 2. Though I’ll give the movie credit for ending the series on a decent note.
Dino Force Brave: A miniseries that caught a lot of fans by surprise, since Korea commissioned a miniseries/continuation for Kyoryuger given how popular it was. It seemed promising, then I saw who was producing and writing it, instead of Sanjo returning. we got Ninninger’s writer. it retcons things like Torin’s not dead and Devius isn’t mentioned (the latter I don’t mind). The series is short which is both its strenght and weakness because for a miniseries, it isn’t given much time to flesh out the new characters, since they only have 12 minutes for each story, shows like the Ultra Fight series work since its serialized and can work as a movie, this not so much but unlike Amazons, I consider this harmless, its nothing too bad and there’s some merit to it (even if they tried saying it was canon in the last Taisen film)
Build: Now this was a series I was actually surprised by, this series is probably my third favorite post Decade Rider series. The series blends the right amount of silly and mature moments. It has a lot of memorable characters and one of my new favorite villlains in the franchise, Evolt was a great villain that really brought the stakes and made you think how this series was gonna deal with him. I remember the ending being divisive but I was ok with it since it does give an explanation for how Build could interact with the other Riders in future crossovers with how the previous seasons (minus Amazons) could connect. plus the V-cinema’s were well handled from an ok one like Cross-Z to a surprisingly Amazing one that is Grease’s V-cinema, now this is how you do a continuation.
Strongest Battle: Now this was a miniseries that caught me by surprise as well since they brought back returning actors to lead up to the next season. Seeing Arakawa still got it and made me hope to see him return writing someday (hint hint).The cast they got surprised me, some I was glad to see return and some I wasn’t too happy with like Takaharu and to an extent Kagura (but too be fair, she wasn’t as bad as Right), but I was intrigued to see what Arakawa would do with them and I was ok with how they were written here though still dislike Takaharu as a character.
Ryusoulger: Ryusoulger is a series that I’ve seen that is pretty loved from what I’ve seen but sadly I’m on the opposite side, I don’t think it was that terrible but more or less disappointing and somehow boring. Strongest Battle setup a lot of things for Ryusoul to follow up on that it felt like a downgrade, like Gaisorg being underutilized that you can tell they didn’t know what to do with him. The writing was all over the place that it was hard to be invested with the characters, who did their best with what they were given but their wasn’t much stakes. If there’s one thing I enjoyed, I really loved the ending arc for giving us not only a Female big bad but also blowing my expectations and breaking status quo, with Red not being the one to finish off the main villain. The ending arc was great yet at the same time was upsetting that the rest of the series wasn’t up to par with it. But now its gonna be the next adaptation after Beast Morphers. With Hasbro in charge, I’m intrigued to see what they do with it.
Zi-o: From the same minds behind Dino Force Brave and Amazons comes what is meant to be a big celebrate/closure of the Heisei era, but threw logic out the window for what is ultimately a fun kind of mess. I don’t mind continuity but I was iffy on how Zi-o retconned the previous seasons as not connected since that’s what they were trying to do until this series went (rip paper) whoops it broke. The series does have some merit with the idea of the Another Rider’s and showing the development of our protagonist and his attempt to defy fate. I also enjoyed when the series stopped time travelling but instead met the characters in the present day cause then the arcs were written better like in Blade and Agito’s tribute episodes. I haven’t watched Geiz’s V-cinema yet but also heard from the producer’s twitter that Woz’s V-cinema isn’t happening, which sucks cause there’s potential in it.
Now that those are done, here we go.
Kamen Rider Zero One:
Now with the start of the Reiwa era, I was hyped since we had Ex-Aid’s writer returning and we got not only a cool awesome secondary but a surprising Female Rider early on and is our third Rider. The first arc starts off strong with Aruto wanting to save the Humagears from Metsubojinrai. Things were looking good until things went downhill thanks to a certain Gold turd known as Thouser, before I get to my issues, I love his suit and how his finishers have a trademark, but that loses its charm when you see him everytime as he’s a very arrogant and obnoxious about his views on how “Humagears aren’t necessary” almost every time. There’s character’s that are meant to be hated, but then there’s characters that you just want to see go away. Once the arc ends the series thankfully pics up with Fuwa getting Rampage, Yua quitting and the return of Izakuchi and Naki. I’m interested to see where things go from here.
Mashin Sentai Kiramager:
Now this was a series I was cautiously optimistic by, since Arakawa returns to write a new series and after my disappointment with Ryusoul, I was nervous but thankfully this series is off to a good start, was surprised we started with episode 0, which does a good job setting up the main 4 before the red shows up. I was a bit skeptical on Juru since he screamed a lot of traits that they could’ve easily screwed up. Thankfully they’ve been doing a good job with Juru, he’s cheerful and imaginative but not a total idiot (what Right should’ve been) and the series has been doing a good job giving everyone their own center episode while not being afraid to take a few risks. I also enjoy the villains like Garza and his rivalry towards Juru due to having a similar ability to his brother that he despised, especially the fight in episode 4 being a highlight. I like that Juru wasn’t sure if he was qualified into being the leader but saw that his passion could help the team in his own unique way. Another thing I love is the Monsters with them going for a Showa aesthetic on mask based Kaijin but with an added twist of a Kaiju counterpart for them to fight, it’s a nice change of pace from just having them grow. The series has done a great job at bringing back an old style and breathing fresh life to it. Was scared hearing what happened to Juru’s actor but thankfully heard he’s doing ok and I’m excited to see what the series brings next.

Marvel recently made yours truly (and a good number of other people) pretty cross with their recent statements that their attempts at diversity aren’t working and that “people don’t want diversity”.
Let’s ignore how Marvel charts sales only via floppies, and not trade paperbacks and/or digital copies. Let’s ignore how Marvel fails to hire new writers to reflect their diverse characters or audiences. Let’s instead focus on a graphic novel industry that’s currently eating Marvel’s pie while it complains about SJWs and makes old characters Nazis (because women inheriting Thor’s title is cardinal sin, but making them Nazis is A-OK).
Let’s talk about manga.
The Big Two, these being DC and Marvel, have a lot they should be learning from manga. It’s a growing industry! It survived a cataclysmic bubble-burst in 2008, but currently is still in a growth period. Shonen Jump has survived its print parallell being shuttered, as a digital-only publication. What are the likes of One-Punch Man, Please Tell Me! Galko-Chan!, and Attack on Titan doing that DC and Marvel aren’t? Well, for starters (more after the break)...
Manga is cheaper. Used to be, people on Gaia Online would joke that manga was a drug because it was more expensive than crack, but that’s not quite true. When it started, a Shonen Jump trade paperback (commonly called a “tankoubon”, because that’s what they’re called in Japan) would retail at $7.95. Eventually, Viz bumped up the price--to $9.95 a pop. Today, you can expect to spend as much as $12.99 a pop per tankoubon, although Shonen Jump stuff still retails at just under $10, for something between 190 - 256 pages in length. Meanwhile, the MSRP for a 168-page-long Spider-Man trade paperback is $24.99. A lot of arguments can be made here: anime is only in black-and-white, the paper stock is different. But why is an imported comic that needs to be licensed, translated, edited, published, then distributed a cheaper alternative than a comic made in the US? Monthly issues (”floppies”)  are a terrible investment, clocking in at $3 - $7 a pop, only 16 pages, and flimsy/fragile as all heck! Worse yet, in Marvel’s case, digital copies of the same issue cost the same as the print copy. (With Shonen Jump? They’re three bucks cheaper.) People only have so much cash, and they want their money to last: a story that’ll last you ten minutes isn’t going to be considered if that same money can go to a game that’s on sale on Steam. Considering how much work goes into a comic, I’d never even dream to consider that comics should be cheaper, but at least give people more bang for their buck.
Manga stories aren’t a messy web. When I started reading Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man run in 2014, there was a whole extra series being sold alongside it that I also found myself needing to read: Learning to Crawl, which was sold as--get this--decimal-issues of Amazing Spider-Man. LtC counted as issues 1.1 to 1.6 of ASM. What. It can be argued that Learning to Crawl wasn’t necessary to understand Amazing Spider-Man, but then an important character introduced in LtC became an important recurring character in ASM. Now, let’s get even messier: ASM continued with the Spider-Verse event, with no less than four comics tying into the darn thing: Edge of Spider-Verse, Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Woman, and Amazing Spider-Man. All of those characters and comics were involved, and had a hand in that event. I didn’t read all of those comics, only EoSV and ASM--so I can’t begin to explain why Spider-Woman was hiding in the Inheritor World when she was, or how Kaine appeared. Compare this to 20th Century Boys, Naoki Urusawa’s tale of childhood, post-war Japan, friendship, and political intrigue. If you want to understand that story, pick up volume one (I insist, it’s so good) and start reading. Wanna catch up on Berserk while its on hiatus? Just buy a volume and start reading! Anyone jumping into a comic book has to be ready to read three different books just to get the low-down on one story, which doesn’t combine well with the aforementioned pricing problems. Floppies are already a tough investment, and they feel even cheaper when you’re supposed to supplement them with even more purchases. It gets worse when you remember...
Manga stories don’t come with baggage. Amazing Spider-Man wasn’t as great an introduction to the character as it could have been. If Peter Parker wasn’t such a cultural marker, that story would have left me confused. Who is this guy in the red-and-blue? Why does he have spider-powers? On a deeper level, what happened with him and Doctor Octopus?! Yeah, see, ASM takes place after a period of time where Doctor Octopus switched minds with Peter Parker and took over his body, becoming the “Superior Spider-Man”, and ASM starts with Peter having regained his body and finding the messes that Doc Oc left for Peter--and trust me, not having read the SSM books, I was surprised to see stuff like Electro and Black Cat having a vendetta against Spidey, or Mary Jane having married someone else. In other words, to understand a current comic book character, you’ve had to have been reading about them for over two years--or dived into a wiki. Now, few manga in the US have lasted the forty-plus years that the likes of Captain America, Batman, or Animal Man have, but even after 84 volumes One Piece is somehow still easier to jump into than an alleged reboot (they’re pirates looking for treasure, also yo-ho-ho Luffy took a bite of gum-gum). If your point is to create an entry point for new readers, you’ve failed when people need to read at least one other book to understand the current one.
Manga covers a lot of ground. Used to be, comics in the US had all kinds of genres: besides superheroes, we had romance, horror, suspense, crime thrillers, and comedies. The rise of the Comic Book Code changed all of that; now all DC and Marvel publish are superheroes. Shonen Jump may be the house that’s ruled by Dragon Ball and One Piece, but Shonen Jump still has piles of variety. Besides action stories, they also cover comedy (Cowa!, Gintama), romance (I’’s, Strawberry 100%), horror (Muyo and Rohji’s Supernaural Detective Agency), sports (Prince of Tennis, Eyeshield 21) and thrillers (Death Note). I’m only covering series that are licensed in the US, mind--Japan has weirder stuff from Shonen Jump, like the positively-ancient KochiKame. Too much emphasis is put on capes in the Big Two. Even their attempts at moving away from that are overshadowed by capes: Grayson may have been a spy thriller, but it still starred Dick Grayson, alias Nightwing (and onetime Batman). Gotham Academy was a fun adventure series set in a large prep school--in the middle of Gotham City. The closest we could hope for Marvel to do as a romance would be Spider-Man Loves Mary-Jane. It seems Marvel and DC aren’t capable--or willing--to release anything that isn’t attached to their superheroes. (There’s a lot to unpack with that last statement, and there’s no space and time to cover that--let’s just say you can’t have an audience you don’t cultivate, and you can’t complain about people ignoring you if you ignore them.) Finally...
Manga actually hires women. Two of the most beloved manga of all time, each responsible for an entire generation of manga fans, are Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha. They’re both romantic comedies with lots of action; the former is more comedy than action, the latter is more action and fantasy than romance. Both of these came to be genre-defining works. Their creator? Rumiko Takahashi--a woman. She’s not alone, either: Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon, Yana Toboso’s Black Butler, CLAMP’s Chobits, xxxHolic, and Tsubasa Resorvoir Chronicles, Hiromu Arakawa’s Full-Metal Alchemist... there is a not-insignificant list of very, very prolific manga that are written and drawn by women. Meanwhile, DCs policies during the New 52 meant that only two women worked with them: writer Gail Simone and artist Amy Reeder. A lot of people on the internet argue for a total meritocracy: that creators should be hired for their talent or skill, and not because they’re women/people of color. But you can’t have a healthy industry without a wide variety of creators. A wide, diverse team of writers means you have a wide, diverse set of viewpoints and experiences that translate to different stories. Ranma 1/2 isn’t a great story because Rumiko Takahashi is a woman, it’s a great story because Rumiko Takahashi is a great writer and artist. But she actually had to get hired in order to make Ranma 1/2. The only reason for Marvel and DC to not have more women in their teams is if they don’t give a crap... and, really, that’s quite telling: you can’t complain attempts at diversity aren’t working if you’re not willing to commit to it. Manga isn’t great at diversity either, owing to Japan’s far-more-ethnocentric population, but there’s still startlingly-more variety with manga than there’s ever been with comics in years. If publishers in the US want to make better business, start looking at how their international fellows handle business. Millions of One Piece fans worldwide exist for a reason.

Chapter Twenty Four:  Journals From Central

Notes:  This, my dear children, is another fic chapter (because during NaNo season last year, I missed my babes, so I had to write fic in this story just to keep my sanity)!  And for this chapter, if you can’t guess from the chapter title or from the bit of dialogue from last week’s chapter, it’s some Fullmetal Alchemist fic.  And just as a slight forewarning, for those of you familiar with the series, it hurts.  It hurts my soul.  I wept while writing it.  I wept while editing.  In short, I’m sorry in advance.  And because I’m posting this so early, I might be editing another chapter and posting today.  Don’t hold your breath, but I’m just saying it’s a possibility. 
Chapter Twenty Three:  Stepford Nightmares
January 17.
A terrible night for rain.  The storms were awful tonight.  All of them.  Master Hawkeye had come in late again for the third time this week.  He told me that he was going to spend some time with his daughter and that I was not to interrupt, no matter what I heard.  It was hard to ignore, though.  Even while I was down in the basement with some of Master’s written notes, Riza’s screams upstairs still shook me to my core.  I had no idea what was going on.  Until later that night when her screams woke me up.  Only this time, it was accompanied by a heavy rumble of thunder.
 I went straight for her room and found her in the corner on the floor, shivering uncontrollably.  Of course, me being the nice guy I am, I got down next to her and asked what was wrong.  I’ve been studying with Master Hawkeye long enough to know about Riza and thunder. Nothing upset her more than a heavy storm like this.  I did all I could to keep her from crying.  That was the last thing I wanted to see.
 But when I touched the skin on her back, she winced under my fingers. I couldn’t help but notice some of the blood on her shirt.  And the red and black ink on her skin.  Strange. This looked like a transmutation array. Definitely flame alchemy.  I didn’t understand why these were even here.  Riza wasn’t an alchemist period, let alone a flame alchemist.  That was her father.
 Later on, she told me the horrors of what Master had just put her through.  As we spoke, Master was outside burning all of his research notes.  He always was a paranoid old man.  But according to Riza, some people from Central were going to come for his research soon enough and he refused to let any of the military have it.
 “What are you doing?” Julian peeked over my shoulder.
 “Nothing,” I brushed him off, “I’m busy.  Go away.”
 “Can I read it?” he asked so innocently.  
 “No,” I shot him down.
 “That doesn’t look like Free! to me,” Julian teased, “That looks like some Fullmetal Alchemist, if I’ve ever seen any.”
 “Shut up, Julian,” I took a heavy drink from my blueberry Red Bull, “Let me live.”
 “I’ve never read any of your Fullmetal stuff yet,” he whined, “Come on.  Please?”
 “This is a warm up,” I told him, “There’s a good chance this is probably shit.”
 “I bet you say that about all your fic,” Julian took my pen and my notebook from me.
 “What the fuck, Julian?” I tried to get it back, “Like I said, it’s probably shit!  I’m not even posting it!”
 “Then, there’s no harm in me reading it,” he argued, “I promise I won’t be harsh.”
 “I don’t care if you’re harsh or not,” I jumped.  Damn! Why do I have to be so small?  Why did he have to be so tall?  I reached up for my notebook, “I’m slightly ashamed of it and it doesn’t need to be seen by anyone but me!”
 “Actually,” Julian put his hand on my forehead, keeping me away from him while he read, “This isn’t that bad.”
 “Really?” I gave him a look, “I don’t know how delirious you are, but that’s shit.”
 “Not at all,” he assured, “I’m serious.  I like it. This needs to get posted.  If you don’t put it in your library, I want to steal it for a caption on one of my pictures.”
 “I don’t know,” I sighed out, “Maybe with a little tweaking here and there.”
 “No,” Julian stopped me, hitting me with my own notebook, “No tweaking.  No editing.  No taking anything away.  This is good, Mimi.  I promise.”
 “It’s not done yet,” I yanked my notebook out of his hand, “I need to finish it.  Then, I’ll start working on Free!.”
 “You know what would be really cool?” he critiqued, “If you did another one of these from the same night, but from Riza’s perspective.”
 “You’re saying to make a parallel fic?”
 “This would make a killer parallel fic,” Julian beamed, “Please?  I need that in my life.”
 “I’ll think about it.”
 “Please?” he begged.
 “I said, I’ll think about it!” I reiterated, a bit annoyed with him, “Don’t you have to go to work?”
 “Yeah,” Julian gave me a quick kiss, “So do you.  Love you.”
 “Love you, too.”
 As Julian pulled out of the driveway, I went back to Mustang’s journal entry.
 I could understand, though.  If the military got their hands on some of Master’s notes, there’s no doubt they’d be weaponized.  And Master hated the fighting more than anything.  He always said the world would be a better place if we saw past all our differences and started looking at the ways we were the same.  In a perfect world, I guess.
 But all of his research notes were tattooed on his daughter’s back.  As long as the military never got a hold of Riza, she’ll be ok.  Maybe I can take the flame alchemy I learn from Master and use it to keep her safe.  But because he destroyed his notes, that means I can’t learn flame alchemy from his books anymore.  I’ll have to learn it from Riza’s bare back…Uh-oh…
 I had to hand it to Mustang. He probably got his first boner learning flame alchemy from Riza’s back.  On the same token, I still wanted for this to have a little bit of bittersweet hope that Roy probably had when he was still learning.  Little did he know, the military wouldn’t be weaponizing the flame alchemy notes, but the alchemists themselves.  And he’d become one of those humanized weapons.  And the research notes he studied from that were so meticulously embedded into Hawkeye’s skin would end up being destroyed by the same alchemy he was taught from them.
 Kills me every time to think about those two.  Everyone always focuses on Edward and Winry’s trials and tribulations, but they seem to forget about what Mustang and Hawkeye have gone through together.  Not saying that those weren’t important to the main storyline, but if Arakawa were to add on to the Fullmetal Alchemist saga, I’d love to hear everything from Mustang and Hawkeye’s childhood together.  From their childhood to the Ishvalan Civil War to post Promised Day to the day Mustang finally becomes Fuhrer until the day they die together.  I needed that like blood in my veins.
 It might not have been my primary objective for the day, but that little distraction was enough to get the creative juices flowing.  And soon enough, I’d be able to get back to work on the Free! fic about the mermaid in Rin Matsuoka’s bathtub.  Although…Now that I got Mustang’s thoughts on paper, I kind of wanted to get a start on its parallel that Julian was so desperate for.
 That meant getting into the head of Riza Hawkeye.  As much as I loved her, I wasn’t sure how prepared I was for that.  She’s seen so much.  She’s been through literal hell and back and still stood strong.  There was no telling how dark it got in there. Hawkeye had her back tattoo forced on her at a young age.  She had to take her shirt off every time Mustang needed to look at her father’s research.  She had that tattoo burned off in Ishval.  She deserved all the love in the world.  More specifically, she deserved all the love that Mustang had to give to her.
 Getting back to planning out Hawkeye’s journal, did I want to set it on the same night?  Did I want to set it in current canon?  Did I want it to be in the future after Mustang becomes Fuhrer and the two of the have gone through coronation already?  I think current canon would probably be best. Hawkeye doesn’t strike me as nostalgic, but I’m sure there are a few choice memories she likes to think back on. Yeah.  Present timeline.  But because I’m evil and I like to tear out the hearts of my readers from time to time, I know exactly what moment in the timeline I’m putting it in.
 It was never easy losing a comrade in arms.  Especially him.  Maes was such a good spirit to have around.  No matter what the situation was, all Hughes wanted to do was help people. And he died doing what he loved.  Telling Edward and Alphonse isn’t going to be pretty. I knew that much.  Seeing Gracia break down so many times was hard.  Hearing Elicia ask her mommy whey they were putting dirt on her daddy was hard.
 But when one sees their rock completely crumble?  That’s what killed me most of all.  In all our years of knowing each other, I’ve never seen Roy so upset.  It was heart wrenching.  I knew that Roy and Hughes were close.  They were best friends whether Roy wanted to put the label on it or not.  Every time Hughes would call his office just to gush over Elicia or Gracia, he’d pretend to be annoyed by it, but now, I’m sure he’d give anything to get that call again.
 Even worse than seeing him upset was the words he said at Hughes’ grave.  The exact words.  When we were younger and he was still studying with my father, he told me one night during a horrific thunderstorm that it was a terrible night for rain. And while the tears he had tried to hold back streamed from his eyes, he could only say one thing.  It was a terrible day for rain…
 I knew he thought the was useless without Maes, but he keeps forgetting one thing.  He lost one pawn.  Not all of them.  One day, he was going to become king.  He would make it all the way to the top.  He’s worked way too hard not to.  there was something big going on in the military, but the thought of investigating it now, especially after losing Hughes, was absolutely out of the question. We had to do it.  We couldn’t let Hughes die in vain like that.  Whoever was responsible will pay for their sins one day, but we had bigger fish to fry.
 I just hope the king doesn’t lose sight of who he is in the process.
 I needed to take a minute. Or two.  Or maybe a bit longer than that.  What started as a quick warm up turned into me ripping my own little Royai heart out and holding it in front of my face still beating.  I took a quick glance at my phone, checking the time. Ten o'clock.  Ok.  Late enough in the day for me to go out and take a walk.  Both my parents worked in Kansas City, so I was in the clear.  I ran home and grabbed some clothes (Today was a day to cosplay Princess Peach.  I don’t know why, but I was in a Peach mood.) before finally heading downtown to clear my head.
