The Great Argus Pheasant (Argusianus argus) is native to the jungles of Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It's name is a reference to Argus; a hundred-eyed giant in Greek mythology. -- Its mating displays is one of the finest in the bird world and takes place after the male clears a spot in the forest and prepares an arena of sorts. He announces himself with loud calls to attract females, the female arrives and is greeted by his wings spread into two enormous fans, revealing the 'wall of eyes' on his plumage. -- Pictured here is a female great Argus pheasant. -- Due to ongoing habitat loss and to being hunted for the cage-bird industry, the great argus is evaluated as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. -- #arguspheasant #greatargus #argusianusargus #pheasant #iucnredlist #nearthreatened #threatenedspecies #stopcagedbirds #ornithology #birds #birdsofmalaysia #malaysianbird #malaysia #argus #malay #tamannegara #nationalpark #malay (at Taman Negara Rain Forest)
