i've always had an issue where i've desperately wanted to connect with artemis but i just never have been able to do it. i just realised why.

anyway this is your reminder that artemis is more than just deer and bears and boars and wolves and forests and aesthetics. she can be the desert. she can be the swamps. she can be the wetlands. she can be the bush. she can be the barren places where only mice and insects roam. she can be the extinct, endangered and living elements of nature. she can be the rotting carcass and the sick and the injured parts of nature. and lastly, she is the wasps you love to preach like they don't benefit nature. and the mosquitoes.

she is nature. all of it.

i wasn’t in the path of the total eclipse and the picture i did get did not get the entire vibe of the grey desaturated lighting but i still had a wonderful eclipse! i set out cards for Apollon and Artemis on my altar and because it finally feels like spring more than it has since the equinox, i lit some pink candles and rose incense. i also made some eclipse water to cleanse my altar with and do rituals with. i hope everyone had a good eclipse if you could see it!!

So I’ve been on a witchcraft journey for awhile now. Trying to really step in fully to my witchhood and dedicate myself completely to it. I’ve been struggling a bit for a variety of reasons but I saw the recent solar eclipse as a perfect opportunity to cement myself into my magic and my spirituality (esp bc everyone was saying that the eclipse was especially impactful to 🦀 like me!). And since the gods are so important to me I decided it was time to have a patron god of my witchcraft to help guide me.

I called out to the gods and asked for an obvious sign on who should be my patron and Artemis smacked me in the face like “here’s your sign, bitch!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Epithets of Goddess Artemis

There are several epithets for Artemis that are not well known. I took these from the writings of Pausanias, a Greek geographer, historian, and traveler.

Most of the temples or sanctuaries that bore these epithets no longer exist as such; some of the materials were used to build other structures, but inscriptions attest to their existence.

Artemis Hegemone-Ηγεμόνη "leader, ruler":

Sparta (Pausanias iii,14).

Limnatide, Limnatis-Λιμνατις "lakes, swamp":

Borders between Argolis/Corinth and Laconia, Epidaurus(Pausanias ii,2,7/iii,23).

Soteira- Σώτειρα "the savior"

Megara, Pagas: Pausanias i,40,44

Thirteen: Pausanias ii,31

Laconia:Pausanias iii,22.

(I put the epithet in Greek too, although modern Greek may say it differently)

Artemis is the goddess of childbirth. If you're birthing a child it's under her domain.

Also her big thing isn't just womanhood - she is goddess of the hunt and the wilderness. She's a plague bringer and a healer, like her twin, Apollo. And much more.

I don't believe that a "hunters of Artemis" group has really existed, though the argument could be made that she has a band of nymphs, not mortals, that acts as one. She did however take the occasional mortal hunting companion, notably two of which were young men (Orion and Hippolytos). It's a really odd pop culture phenomenon to the best of my understanding, unless a cult / temple had such a thing going on. So I doubt Artemis would give a shit about transness, as long as you're a virgin you've got a theoretical chance.

So Artemis is the goddess of like womanhood and motherhood and childbirth, right? So what happens when a transgender man gives birth? Does she still protect them because it's childbirth, or does she not because it's a man who's giving birth? Extending on that, does she allow transgender women into the Hunters of Artemis? Like, I'm genuinely curious if this has ever been addressed

Me: Artemis, I have a problem. I really want to cast more spells, advance my witchhood, and utilize my magic more but I’m always so tired at night.

Artemis: Do you think I’m a vampire???

Me: …what??

Artemis: Do you think I’m only running around at night and have some kind of aversion to the Sun??

Me: …no

Artemis: Then why do you seem to think your witchhood can only exist at night?

Me: Uhhh…

Artemis: You know the Sun is an extremely powerful energy source, right??

Me: But the Moon….???

Artemis: Yes the Moon is magnificent, glorious, groundbreaking, elegant, powerful, beautiful, stunning, showstopping…

Me: Be gayer, Artemis.

Artemis: MY POINT is that the Moon isn’t the only energy source to draw from so if you’re struggling to connect with your witchhood at night then switch to a different time of the day. Working with the Sun instead of the Moon doesn’t make you any less of a witch. Do what works for you and stop confining yourself.

Interestingly enough after I had this conversation with Artemis, @theoi-crow and I had a whole discussion about the underutilization of The Sun in witchcraft. I’m thinking of bringing that discussion here if you’d be interested in hearing my perspective. But for now just know that your witchhood is not dependent on casting your spells at night or working with The Moon. You define who you are as a witch and it’s completely okay if it looks different than the “norm”. Just as Artemis says “Do what works for you” 💕
