Once Mafuyu realizes who she really is, will her sekai change? Will it transform completely or will it change over time like it already has? Will the vocaloids designs also change? I'm surprised at how little people are discussing this tbh...

COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing a review
8/10
Tumblr media
I wasn't planning on tearing up at this movie, but seeing Miku struggle got to me...
I arrived from work today and immediately spent 1 hour learning the basics about Project Sekai Colorful Stage and then immediately left the house again to go watch this movie. I wanted to watch it because I love Hatsune Miku. I didn't expect to fall in love with all of these ocs this much.
Do you have no idea how bad this is? I have a job, I don't have time to become a pjsk fan. And yet, these characters are so silly. It is impossible to ignore.
The plot itself is a very simple, but effective, story about never giving up on your dreams and reaching out to those in need. Movie Miku was such a good character to follow and she's so cute and innocent... She's like a little bug that you must protect from all harm. I love her.
Also, shout-out to Mafuyu for somehow managing to look like she's about to kill herself the whole movie no matter how hopeful and nice the scene was! Love to see some clinical depression representation!

Transmasc Swag Polls- ROUND 1
Tumblr media
Propaganda and other info under the cut.
CANONICITY LEVELS-
KIM: Subtext/ Coded
MAFUYU: Subtext/ Coded (but with definite intent)
MEDIA?
Disco Elysium, Project SEKAI / Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage
KIM PROPAGANDA-
Short, balding, patchy facial hair, self awareness, terrible taste in men, all of these are positives, I love him EMPATHY [Challenging: Success] - Kim must have had doubts about his name at some point too, but deliberately discarded them. YOU - "Have you ever wanted to change your name, Kim?" KIM KITSURAGI - "Change? No, not exactly. But I think all of us at some point imagine what our lives might have been had we been something else." "And then we feel trapped by the names we've been given, as symbols of the intentions and expectations of others..." He pulls a long, pensive drag. "Even if I were to change my name now, upon hearing... [anything like] *kim* in the street, I'd turn to see who was calling me."
[Pollrunner's Note: There are many things wrong with this world, but at least we get to have canonically gay Kim Kitsuragi. Maybe things will work out.] MAFUYU PROPAGANDA-
High pressure from parents to be a successful woman leading to self destructive tendencies and a “perfect good girl” persona while having little to no concrete sense of identity. Mafuyu’s mother has at least twice intervened in her life with a blossoming interest and skill in music and composition because it would “interfere with” this prospective future. Also one of the songs in this game is literally explicitly about gender dysphoria and Mafuyu duets it with the canon trans character in the game. It’s not *canon* per se but give it five to eight in universe years (I will be using he/him for Mafuyu throughout, apologies for any confusion) Mafuyu has lost all sense of identity trying to fit into his mother's idea of what a good daughter is and is now trying to find out who he really is. his arc centers around him trying to break away from living solely to meet his mother's expectations and trying to figure out for himself what it is he likes and wants. his struggles with identity are regularly compared to those of Mizuki (they/she), his friend and fellow member of his music making group, who is canon/heavily implied transfem. There are many instances of dialogue where Mizuki says they understand exactly how he feels, including one story where Mizuki reflects on their life around the time they joined N25 and what gave her the courage to socially transition.

“Whoa!” The MMJ group exclaimed as they entered the convention center.
The place was huge. Many booths— decorated to match their respective idol groups— lined the walls. At the very back was a giant stage, which already had a crew working on setting everything up.
“Pretty cool, huh?” Saitou, MORE MORE JUMP!’s manager chuckled. “I just knew you couldn’t pass up this opportunity.”
The idols had received an offer to appear at an idol event a few months prior. With their goal of becoming more popular, they immediately accepted. But they didn’t realize just how big this event would be.
“Wow, so many well known idol groups are here.” Airi observed.
“I know. Isn’t it wonderful to be able to attend the same event as them?” Shizuku added.
“Oh yeah, that reminds me.” Haruka drew her attention away from the place, and to her friends. “I know it’s great to be in the same room as these other groups, but we still need to stay professional.”
“Right!” They agreed enthusiastically.
“Okay, we need to start setting up your booth. The boxes of merchandise should already be there.” Saitou said as she looked at her phone— supposedly where she was getting the information from. “The booth is over…. there.”
~~~~
As MORE MORE JUMP! got their booth ready, another idol group on the other side of the convention center was doing the same. Your idol group.
“(name), we’re almost set!” One of the members informed.
“Great, thanks!” You gave them a smile, before going back to setting out the keychains.
As you did, you heard excited murmuring from behind you. Assuming it was your teammates slacking off, you went to redirect them.
“Guys, please focus. Just because we’re almost done, doesn’t mean we get to goof off.”
“Sorry!” They all said, a bit started from being told off by their leader.
“Just try not to let it happen again.” You sighed. “What’re you so excited about anyway?”
“Haven’t you heard? MORE MORE JUMP!’s gonna be here too!” One of the members said, bouncing a little bit from pent up emotions.
“Who?” You gave a clueless look, before resuming setting up the booth.
“Wait, you’ve never heard of them? How? They’re trending like crazy right now!” Another member said in disbelief.
“No, I haven’t been following idol news lately.” As you said that, you completed your task, now able to put your full attention on your team. “There, done. Now, who’re the members?”
“That’s the cool thing. Most of them are formerly retired idols! They have Shizuku Hinomori, Airi Momoi and Haruka Kiritani!” Some of them squealed— fangirling over the mentioned people.
“Oh wow, they have Kiritani? I didn’t expect to see her back in the idol business.” You smiled.
“Yeah, me neither. It’s apparently because of the newbie of the group. What’s her name? Oh yeah, it’s Mino-“
Suddenly, a loud voice spoke up from the stage. “Attention idols! You have about ten minutes before the event starts! So make sure you’re all ready!”
After the announcement, everyone started rushing to finish up their tasks. With your attention changed, you inevitably forgot about the last member of MMJ.
“Alright guys, get ready! Make sure your outfits and makeup are set!”
Everyone started exclaiming excitedly, while checking each other for any wardrobe mistakes.
“Okay, I know you’re excited, but remember, we need to stay professional. Not only in front of fans, but other idols too. So I don’t wanna see any of that in front of others.”
The other members agreed, not wanting to potentially ruin their image. So while they wanted nothing more than to geek out about their favorite idols, they vowed to keep their cool.
A few minutes later, the event finally began.
~~~~
(Time Skip)
Minori and the rest of MMJ were easily one of the most popular groups there! The lines for their merchandise and meet and greet were so long, they started to invade the lines for other idol groups. Everything sold out much quicker than they anticipated as well.
Now, it was their break time, so they got time to recharge.
“It was so crowded! I didn’t expect so many people to come see us!” Minori said happily.
“Yeah, especially since there are so many other popular idol groups here. Guess that’s good news though. It means we’re one step closer to becoming top idols!” Airi added.
“Yeah, it’s definitely something to be proud of.” Haruka said. “Now, we should probably head back out there.”
Everyone nodded, and got up from their seats. They made their way out of the back, and into the main room.
Coincidently, you were just passing by the door they came out of.
“Minori?!”
The girl herself turned to the direction she was called from. Expecting it to be a fan, she put on her idol smile, but it immediately dropped in shock the moment she saw your face.
“(name)?!” She could only stand there as you bolted towards her.
“Minori! It’s really you!” You cheered, enveloping her in a tight hug.
“(name)! I can’t believe it! I missed you so much!” She hugged back, bouncing slightly from the excitement.
“Minori, you know them?” Airi asked her.
“Yeah! We were friends back in middle school! I haven’t seen her since she moved away!” She explained.
It was then that you realized who else was with Minori. “Wait, Momoi? And Kiritani? And Hinomori? You’re that ‘MORE MORE JUMP!’ group. Wait, so that means…” You stepped back, getting a full view of all the girls. “Minori, you’re a member?!”
Having finally gotten over the initial shock, she spoke up. “Yeah! I did it (name)! I’m an idol!” She clasped your hands in hers.
“That’s great! I’m so happy for you!”
“You’re (full name), right?” Haruka asked you. “The leader of (idol group name)?”
“Yup! That’s me!” You replied, and gave her a cute, sparkly smile.
“I was wondering what you’re doing here! You’re an idol too?!” Minori exclaimed.
“Yeah! Isn’t it great? We’re both idols!” You hugged her again.
“Yeah!” She hugged back tightly. You both relished in the feeling of having your childhood friend back.
“So, this might be a weird thing to ask…” You said after pulling away. “but can I get your autograph?” You quickly pulled out a pen and paper from your pocket.
“R-really?! You want mine?!” Minori stuttered bashfully.
“Of course I do! I can’t pass up the opportunity to get my friend’s signature!”
“Okay! Can I have yours too?” She asked— grabbing the pen, and popping the cap off.
“Of course!”
~~~~
At that point, your own group had found you, and overheard the conversation. Their leader— who had been strict about staying professional— was excitedly hugging and exchanging autographs with another idol.
They met up with MMJ, and waited with them for their members to finish up their mini meet and greet.
“Isn’t that ironic…” One of your teammates chuckled. “Little Mx. ‘Stay Professional’ themself— all over Hanasato.”
“I say let them have their fun. I mean, this is their reunion after all.” Airi giggled.
“I still can’t believe (name) didn’t know about MMJ beforehand. But hey, I guess it gave them a surprise.” Another member added.
Everyone nodded in agreement, watching you and Minori’s adorable interaction. One that was the last thing either of you expected to happen. But you both knew this event was a great opportunity. So you were grateful that it let you reunite with your childhood friend.
project sekai is full of complementary colors and ruikasa being the purple/yellow duo is everything to me. there’s this concept called luminance in color theory which means that certain colors are perceived as brighter than others — yellow is the brightest color and purple is the darkest. in other words, when a saturated color wheel is converted to grayscale, yellow is closest to white and purple is closest to black. all complementary colors are definitionally opposites, but yellow/purple are somehow the MOST opposite to the human eye.
on a visual level, on a story level, on a symbolic level, tsukasa and rui are always referencing light and shadow, front of stage vs backstage, stars vs backlights. it extends to the roles they play onstage, with tsukasa as the king (or the hero or the protagonist) and rui as the alchemist (or the villain or the trickster). by all accounts, we expect these things to be diametrically opposed, but wxs has always been about subverting classic tropes as well! their main story concludes with the king bending the knee to the outcast alchemist, which goes against all the rules we expect from this type of fairytale or opera plot.
for example! two preexisting stories that are referenced in wxs events/cards are the little mermaid and coppelia. they only discuss coppelia in a side story but i’ve always loved that reference because that opera features a villainous outcast inventor (some versions redeem him but he is the primary antagonist), and then obviously there’s the sea witch who tricks the little mermaid in the original story.
the overarching theme of the wxs plot is finding joy in one’s originality, finding strength in what makes you abnormal. so it’s natural that their performances would reflect this as well, that the troupe would approach traditional villains from a nontraditional perspective.
bringing it back to the character designs, tsukasa and rui represent opposing forces (hero/villain, king/alchemist, knight/sorcerer) that complement one another instead of destroying each other. they’ve taken these familiar archetypes and turned them into partners in crime rather than mortal enemies. what if the king asked for the alchemist’s forgiveness! what if the hero protagonist and the villain were best friends! what if the most heroic thing you could do is take care of other people! what if the villain needed somebody to believe in him!
my first ever real fanfiction!! not sure on the process of posting writing to tumblr so i hope this is fine :)
please be nice. i almost never write for fun <3
this is sort of a beginning to my supercyber prsk AU. this is how tsukasa and emu first meet! i want to keep the meeting order similar to canon, so tsukasa meets emu before he ever gets to know rui or nene.
to anyone new- supercyber is my self-indulgent vampire tsukasa AU. it's supernatural x cyberpunk (genres) and set in a dystopian city.
apologies if tsukasa is sort of OOC! he seems a little brooding in this fic.. sorry! he isn't Always like that in this AU.
FANDOM: Project Sekai: Colorful Stage
CHARACTERS: Emu Otori, Tsukasa Tenma
WORD COUNT: 2,294
The darkest parts of the city were always active. Dim lights and dripping pipes attracted the most grim monsters, prowling for unsuspecting victims. The cost to put in a few more lights didn’t seem like it’d be too much to Tsukasa, but what did he know? The pockets of the rich in charge only got fuller as everyone at the bottom suffered. Sending out “protectors” to deal with the beasts was a measly bandaid to a much larger, systematic problem.
Protectors did nothing but symbolize the power that the government had. It was hard to turn a corner without running into that shiny protector badge in the city center, but it was rare to come across one where Tsukasa spent his time, in the grim backstreets.
The vampire’s thoughts were interrupted by a loud bang, followed by a cloud of smoke emerging from behind a building. Quickly, he was back on his feet, dashing toward the scene of the disturbance.
Tsukasa had decided it would be his duty to protect the backstreets for as long as the people in power did nothing for their less fortunate citizens. Night after night he prowled, hunting down the shadow beasts, known colloquially as “rogues,” that feasted on humans. For a while, Tsukasa had despised humans for terrorizing his kind into hiding for so long. Years ago, the thought of saving a human would have made the vampire sick. Hate only breeds more hate, however, and as it turns out, no one hates humans more than other humans. It was disgusting to him how little regard the corporate leaders in charge of running the city had for their own people, especially the people that needed kindness the most. He learned to redistribute that hate up the ladder, and to protect the people who had nobody else.
Guilt bubbled up inside him. The air smelled of wet pavement, rot, and smoke; it was difficult to detect the scent of rogue, but it was faint. He should have noticed it before anything had happened! As he raced down the alley, turning a corner, he fully expected to find the lifeless body of a civilian hanging from the jaws of a beast. A dark maroon painted the road, pieces of black fur scattered about. Bright pink caught his eye, reflecting off the shiny badge he loathed.
Before him stood a short girl, hands wrapped around a hammer the size of her torso. The pink lights emitting from the hammer lit up the scene. She had a cheerful grin across her face, despite the growling beast circling her, trailing blood and limping.
Tsukasa pulled up his collar instinctively, hiding his fangs from the girl. She seemed to barely notice him, though, more preoccupied with the opponent in front of her. A few moments passed before the protector lunged once more, landing a final blow on the injured rogue. The impact of the hammer was certainly loud and sent a blast of debris flying. This must be what caused that smoke earlier, Tsukasa thought, observing the fight from around the corner. The body of the defeated rogue began to evaporate, leaving behind only a pool of blood.
Satisfied, the girl hummed. “Wow! These guys sure are everywhere around here!” she exclaimed, seemingly to nobody. Tsukasa continued to watch her as she wiped a speck of blood from her face with her sleeve. “I wonder why we’re never sent out here…?” she pondered, tapping her chin with her finger. “Oh well!” she shrugged, ending the conversation she was having with herself.
How odd… maybe protectors were beginning to become self-aware. That aside, Tsukasa couldn’t just leave her to walk off like everything is fine. That’s not part of his status quo.
Swiftly, the vampire dashed forward, running across the stretch of blood-stained pavement and toward the protector. Once the gap between the two dissolved, he unsheathed his claws and struck toward the back of her head. Despite facing the other way, she clearly heard his approach and ducked just in time, causing Tsukasa to stumble forward. That’s right, protectors aren’t as stupid as rogues. The pink-haired girl pulled back, taking a look at him.
“Hello!” she shouted in greeting. Her eyes widened when she took in her attacker; he wore a flashy cropped jacket with long, blue sleeves, and a collar that covered half of his face. His hair was long, blond-to-pink fade reaching his waist. And of course, his slitted eyes were a deep red.
“Oh! I know you!” she pointed, jumping back up to her feet in excitement. “You’re Pegasus!”
Something deep in Tsukasa’s ego stirred. Just a little. As it turns out, stealth is not his strong suit. He’s earned a name for himself, he would call himself “famous,” though “infamous” is a better way to describe it. As a late-night vigilante, his name, or rather, his pseudonym, has been passed around. If he’s going to save civilians, might as well tell them “the star that will keep the city safe ☆” is called Pegasus. He had no plans on making his identity as Tsukasa Tenma public.
He straightened up, theatrically moving his hand to his chest. “You are correct!” he beamed, “I am Pegasus!” The protector looked way too excited for his act. They were on different sides, weren’t they?
Tsukasa raised his arm and quickly pointed at the girl. “I was just doing my nightly rounds, fighting rogues and protecting civilians,” he declared rather loudly, beginning his monologue. He wasn’t able to get very far, however, before the protector tightened her grip on her hammer. She was just pretending to be excited-
Behind him, he heard a roar. He whipped around, catching the flash of pink in the corner of his vision. Another rogue had crawled its way into the alley, sleek body in the form of an oversized lizard. The hammer crashed into the beast, creating another loud BOOM that made Tsukasa cover his ears. Despite her size, the protector was surprisingly strong, especially to be wielding a weapon that big. The rogue let out a pained cry, thrashing wildly after the strike it received. He knew that this protector could easily take this one out, after watching her so easily defeat the previous one, but he was not going to let her take all the glory. Not when his monologue had been interrupted so abruptly.
He took action, running directly at the beast. He felt pink eyes on him as he leapt forward and raked his claws across the face of the injured rogue. It hissed and stumbled, impaired vision causing it to lose its footing. This one is slow, Tsukasa thought to himself, striking the lizard-shaped rogue once again with claws. He pierced its throat, its blood staining his hands. As the monster choked, a large hammer flew into his eyesight and smashed into the head of the beast. Startled, the impact sent him staggering backwards, and he found himself in a crouched position, eyes remaining on the unmoving beast. After just a few moments, like the one before, it dissipated into the air, leaving only its blood behind.
Tsukasa let out a sigh. The adrenaline of the attack was still coursing through his veins. To the right of himself, he heard a shrill cheer.
“YAY!” He looked over. The short protector girl was doing a victory dance of sorts, waving her hands in the air. “We did it!” she yelled once more, turning toward Tsukasa. “We made the monster go WOOSH!”
Quickly, he wiped the look of disbelief off his face. Normally, protectors would be after him now, but she made no move to attack him. Even though he had charged her before…
“Yeah! Of course-” he started, picking himself off the ground. “WAIT, no, that was supposed to be my kill!” Tsukasa shouted, pointing at her.
“That doesn’t matter!” the girl smiled. She stepped over and took her hammer in her hands once more. “It’s gone now, nobody will be hurt!”
Right. Because protectors were so concerned about civilians and not just their own image. Even so, it was unusual to find a protector in this area. It was odd, and now that Tsukasa had time to think about it, she seemed different than all the others he had encountered.
“Anyway! Mister Pegasus! You really are a vampire!” The smile remained on her face as she spoke. Tsukasa braced himself to lunge at her, but she quickly put her hands in front of herself, as if that were going to stop him. And it did. “Wait, that’s not bad!”
He paused, flexing his claws. “Am I not your enemy?” he asked, intrigued by the morals this pink-haired girl carried. He was right, she was definitely different. She shook her head violently.
“Of course not! I’ve seen what you do. You have the same goals that I have,” the girl exclaimed, excitedly pointing to the shiny badge on her collar. “I want to protect people, just like you.”
That’s what protectors always claimed. To join the ranks of protectors was to pledge yourself to the government and follow whatever orders they gave. That’s what Tsukasa hated so much about them. The government would never send a protector to this part of the city though, so whatever she is doing here is by her own accord. And for that, Tsukasa decided she was not a bad person.
He retracted his claws, however still stayed alert. “I believe you.” Naive maybe, but she was skilled and had a good heart. “What are you doing all the way out here?” he decided to ask.
“I just felt like coming here! My dad tells me to stay closer to the capitol, but there’s so many rogues over here. I don’t know why we’re never stationed here,” she responded easily. She seemed like an open book, having no reason to hide anything. “Oh! Do you want me to still call you Pegasus? Or is that too formal? I’m Otori Emu, but you can call me Emu, now that we are friends!”
Friends?! That was quick, but Tsukasa simply didn’t have the heart to tell her otherwise. This girl, Emu, was a force to be reckoned with, in a good way, he supposed. “Ah- well you can call me Tsukasa!” He was not keen on giving out his surname, lest harm will fall on Saki, but Tsukasa sounded safe.
Wait. “HUH?!” he shouted, eyes widening. “OTORI? AS IN, OTORI ENTERPRISES?” She only beamed back at him.
The city was run by a group of powerful corporations- one of them being Otori Enterprises. This girl was a part of an influential family, one he certainly had no business messing with quite yet. Shit. He already gave her his name.
At this point, Tsukasa was starting to visibly panic. “Hey! I’m not going to tell them about this,” Emu tried to convince him, taking a few steps toward the vampire. The sudden movement caused him to growl, sending her a piercing glare.
“I should have never let my guard down,” he spat. If he were to concuss her, would she forget that he was ever here? He took a glance at his surroundings, surveying near objects, before returning his gaze to Emu. She looked concerned, and a little sad. No, he couldn’t do that. She was a protector, but she also showed him kindness. It would be against everything in him to hurt her seriously.
“I’m not even supposed to be out here,” Emu spoke again, “if I told my family who I met, I would be in big trouble!” She sounded reassuring, but Tsukasa refused to drop his guard again. “So, it’s okay! We can be friends!”
Friends… maybe it was a good idea to get to know somebody on the inside. He wasn’t intent on manipulating her, but he had a feeling he wouldn’t need to. This Otori Emu had a genuinity about her that Tsukasa was sure he liked. He wouldn’t lend his trust so easily to a protector. However, he may as well see where this would lead.
“Hey, not so close,” he growled. She pouted a little bit, then quickly recovered.
The vampire took a deep breath. “Okay, fine, I believe you.” He hoped his words were true. “Just- don’t tell anyone my name. Okay? I’m Pegasus.”
The girl nodded her head excitedly, smiling wide. “WONDERHOY! YAY!” she shouted, jumping up and down a few times. Emu then paused, grinning at Tsukasa. “Wow! I’ve never been up so close to a vampire before-” she took a few steps forward before he put his hands out in front of himself, stopping her abruptly.
“That’s okay!” she smiled, circling back to her previous spot. “Well, Pegasus, it’s getting late!” Emu glanced up at the dark sky. “Er- early?” She turned her head to the side, before letting her pondering get too far. “I’d better be off! Take down any of the rogues I may have missed for me!” she had already begun to dash away, shouting and waving her hand back at him.
In an instant, the pink-haired girl disappeared behind a corner. Tsukasa stared at the empty spot where she once stood and brought his arms to himself. He wasn’t able to get a final word in with her before she left. Would he ever see Emu again?
She clearly did not have any problems disobeying government orders, traveling farther than her issued post. Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad thing to see her again. The two had worked so well as a team, not knowing each other at all. Perhaps Emu could be what the world needed to make a change.
Tsukasa found himself missing her presence. He had been living a much more lonely life than expected.
TMayNT day 15: I don't feel particularly strong about any of the Karais so I ended up drawing Shiraishi An from Project Sekai: Colorful Stage instead. They're both characters that are kinda doomed by the narrative but in the recent Vivid Bad Squad event she finally opened up about her insecurities with her singing partner Kohane.
She has uncanny similarities to Karai's story in 2012. Like how her family (and the town she grew up in) lied to her about how a prominent female figure in her life died. She's trying to surpass the impossible, with impossible expectations weighed upon her. And she's also Japanese lol. I'm way more attached to An because despite everything she's still an absolutely amazing friend. She's got a gigantic heart for literally anyone and everyone. She'll help people even if they've wronged her. An is literally the character EVER.
This is a redraw of the card from that event. Idk. I started a Niigo and Leo/need stan but ended up becoming the biggest VBS fan ever.
@tmaynt sorry I don't feel strongly about any Karai lol. please take my girl An anyways
Night Sky Patrol of Tomorrow - Design, Effects, and Extra Notes.
Tumblr media
Design
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Designed and Modeled by Maydayfireball, with some touch ups from jjinomu ! I distinctly remember sending him to her and going "yeah i dunno what to do for his shoes" and her sending him back with "no shoes." so free feet pics i guess.
ANYWAY.. Some people caught it, but he was loosely inspired by the vocaloids in the "Empty" sekai of project sekai. He's intentionally fairly monochrome, so that the wings towards the end seem even more vivid. He's meant to appear a bit hopeless and messy, like he's really down on his luck. I imagine a Piko like this would be gentle, but a little sad most of the time.
Effects
There's two Big effect points for this one, so I'll go into both.
The first is the night sky. It has an intentionally painted, flat look. It's suppose to feel like the backdrop of a stage, not like a real night sky. Like he's performing, but his heart isn't in it quite yet. I added a light dust particle effect in as well to make a contrast between it and the still background to really hammer in it's falseness.
Tumblr media
And then of course, the climax.
Tumblr media
Using a flat black plane behind him, i abused mmd's transparency bug to display the artwork behind him through the wings.
Tumblr media
The wings are also directly shaped from the wings shown in the MV.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This moment wasn't just a climax for this song, but a climax for the concert as a whole. Like Piko gaining hope and a better outlook for the future thanks to those who reached out to him honestly.
Extra Notes
BOY. I apologize in advance, i have SO MANY THOUGHTS about these lyrics. If you're an english speaker, I highly recommend watching it with the closed captions on. They're a bit on the nose, even without me digging into them.
「I'm a boy who picks his battles depending on whatever suits his mood」 「No hopes for the future, I wanted to be drawn in a dream.」 「and yet I fear the future- hating tomorrow, wishing for the past.」
These are the opening lines for the song. Coming off the back of our angry streaming heart piko who longed for the past, this version of him has given up. Like there is nothing left for him to do.
「Leaving the old me behind,」 「but that night was different from all the others.」 「You took my hand...」
I like to believe, in a way, Piko would be referring to the first Piko Live Party here. Like a moment of light in a dark future, You reached out your hand and supported him.
「If this is to end as a dream, at least allow me to change yesterday...」 「I won't say anything like that, so let me keep smiling together with you, tomorrow as well.」
I've said it before, but we made the first Piko Live Party assuming it wouldn't get attention. We worked hard, but with the expectation that it wouldn't be seen by many. That's why, during this chorus, the backdrop is flat. Like a kid's play. Or, like not-quite-discovered potential.
「Even if I think that the world truly changed,」 「and even if I tried to hope or change, the future was cruel.」
The screen goes darker, and the colors become fully monochrome. It's a bit like a reality check - We're supporting Piko, but aside from us, there's not much he can do to change his fate as a discontinued vocaloid.
「Even so, the world I always watched with you was truly beautiful.」 「I still haven't forgotten that, I've placed it in my heart so I can remember.」
This is a Piko who's speaking to us from the present. I interoperate it as if he's referring to the rush of support he got, and how he'll always cherish it even if his future is bleak.
Of course, this is followed by what feelings and emotions you've given him. The colors burst forward, creating wings like the summer sky. They're a physical representation of your support and the future it's given him.
「I want to be together with you in the future, however short our time may be」 「so I'll shout "Remember this day someday in the future, whoever we are then..."」
Again, I highly recommend watching this song in particular with the closed captions turned on. It really adds to it.
I was extremely happy when Mio picked this song to cover, because I knew immediately what direction I should take this concert in at that point. I knew what I wanted to do with it from the very beginning, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.
Miku Can't Sing, But She Can Pass the Vibe Check
Colorful Stage: The Miku Who Can't Sing is a fascinating movie to me. On paper, this should not work. This is a spoiler free review so I can't say too much but like... From go, they just throw out this term Sekai and while it is shown what that is, what it is never explained. You just have to roll with it, like you have to roll with the fact that there are twenty main characters and maybe a quarter of them get named in the movie. From a normal writing standpoint, it's odd.
Odd is not bad though, especially when its oddities are to serve a purpose.
This is a movie that understands that slowing down for the sake of things like exposition, rather than just focusing on charm, character and theme isn't going to serve it well. It wants you to be able to roll with the punches and never really asks that you know these concepts in depth. You don't need to know everything about these characters, you just need to know they're friends, maybe their personality and get some cute interactions from them.
Despite this, the movie is not fast paced. That actually wouldn't work because things would move so quickly as to leave you drowning. Instead, it's human, charming and entertaining. It wants to tell a human story of connection, perseverance and struggle and never deviates from that goal to the point that it never needs to.
This is all helped by very good animation (minus a couple wonky shots), great music and good ideas to make sure its lowkey moments are not boring. It is a much breezier watch than one would expect and I should know seeing as I watched it at 11 at night when I usually am in bed by ten at the latest. If it lost me too much, I was going to pass out and instead by the end I was energized and absolutely there for it and that's also despite not being someone who does great with subtitles. This movie managed to hop those sorts of barriers and stride confidently towards its conclusion with the confidence it deserved.
This is not a perfect movie. I think if you're not a creative, you might lose a bit of what this movie is trying to do even if it actually does acknowledge its topics are universal. It does feel bloated at times and the characters are REALLY hard to distinguish between sometimes, not helped by the other vocaloids that show up mostly just to be there in the background. There are reasons why critics are not super excited about this movie.
But if you meet it on its own terms, you'll find a beautiful song reaching back to you. One that more than passes the vibe check needed to make its story resonate and to fight the darkness that we all face in our day to day struggles. See you next tale.
======+++++======
Oh, final note: I'm not a Vocaloid fan. I've listened to like ONE song with an actual Vocaloid singer. Most of my exposure to Miku is art of Miku and just her general existence. I did not go to this as a fan, I went because my brother saw it earlier in the day, in a town an hour away from where we live, came back, grabbed me, and dragged me out to see it. That is also partially why this blog is so late in the day because we only got back home at TWO THIRTY IN THE MORNING. But it was well worth it, in my opinion.
I have a public Discord for any and all who want to join!
I also have an Amazon page for all of my original works in various forms of character focused romances from cute, teenage romance to erotica series of my past. I have an Ao3 for my fanfiction projects as well if that catches your fancy instead. If you want to hang out with me, I stream from time to time and love to chat with chat.
And a Kofi if you like what I do and want to help out with the fact that disability doesn’t pay much.
