I'm thinking about an AU where like...Ody picks up a feral kid from an island who stows away on the ship. It'd be good to get some whimsy on that ship and maybe things go better. Hope Penelope doesn't mind an extra kid + Telemachus having a wild child of a little sibling now. Very overly enthusiastic, half the crew is terrified, other half is like "yeah the kid has good survival technique ideas." Ody is like, "please stop gleefully mopping the bloodied castle" after kid decides to be helpful. Proceeds to kick a suitors head out of the hallway so OdyPen can walk around together peacefully.
excuse you, that child is helping!!! Ody, Telemachus, and Penelope are reuniting and tired and this child, out of the goodness of their heart is cleaning the palace (with aid of course) 😤
they don’t need to bc by that point their an official ward of the palace, but it the thought that counts (they totally loot the suitor’s stuff in the process)
#but yeah Ody and his men having a child along for their trip would be so fun!#(and why i still daydream about what if Ody didn’t throw the infant from the wall of Troy)#you’d have Polites spoiling them while Eurylochus is now calculating rations for 600 men + child. what to entertain them bc space is small#Ody daydreaming about Telemachus (imma say he projects some of his desires of being the dad he wanted to be sans Troy on the kid)#and i am already team big brother Telemachus so when Ody arrives with a kid Telemachus is so onboard bc now HE gets to tell#the kiddo tales and play with them and educate them about Ithaca (they have been given a rundown by the crew but the kid indulges)#Penelope is apprehensive at first bc it’s definitely not HER kid but it does not look like Ody#and she knows her husband inside and out#so after the apprehension is appeased Penelope is onboard for a new kid#she knows how lonely her son was I. Those years they waited for their missing family to return#(and sure we can speculate over whether or not the kid can get past Zeus’s Lightning bolt but imma ignore that for now)#(we will all assume the kid just survives it all and is there with Ody even if other crew members aren’t)#asks#epic the musical#the odyssey#(actually wait what if the kid was from Calypso’s island? 👀 washed ashore long ago and stayed bc Calypso refused to let them go)#(she projects her dreams of caring for another at the corner of the child ever growing/aging. they have been a child for so long)#(a blessing and curse. they do not envy Calypso’s difference of affection for Ody. but they do not refuse when offered a chance to leave)

Destiny in Volterra, Dark!AU
Summary: Destiny alludes to her opinion on the Volturi’s diet with Caius as he questions her marriage.
Ashore Masterlist
Warnings: talk of torturing/killing/eating humans, dark and twisty, talk of divorce
A/N: in one of the AU versions I’ve written of Ashore, Destiny and Carlisle end up married and then end up divorcing due to the Volturi and their “corruption” of Destiny (aka evil!Destiny)
Tumblr media
Caius is ranting, yet again, about how much he hates humans as his brothers tune him out. As he suggested some fort of cruel revenge, Destiny grinned, lost in thought considering herself doing what Caius was saying.
“You’re grinning” he stopped, surprised as he pointed to her face, “does the Mrs-loves-humans have a secret from her husband?!”
Destiny rolled her eyes as she smiled patronizingly at Caius, “what my husband doesn’t know won’t hurt him”.
“Do tell” he instructed, leaning forward in his chair.
She sighed and slumped back against hers, lying her head against the back of the chair. “There’s nothing to tell”, she muttered, “no matter my thoughts or whims, I will not betray my husband.”
“And to follow your natural diet, to stop the pathetic fighting of your true nature, that would be betraying him?” He asked, amused at the thought of the treachery facing his least favorite person
“But of course. For the man who tried killing himself for a century in hopes to never hurt a human, any even remotely impure action towards a human would be spitting on his sacrifice” she muttered darkly.
Caius grinned a devilish smile, asking, “and if you did not have him to consider?”
“While I don’t agree with your… fishing methods, there are plenty of bad people that the world could do without. Why be the apex predator if you’re not assisting the natural cycle of life?” She asked, half heartedly, glancing up at her companion with a disheartened smile.
“Ahh, it sounds like you, dear friend, have a problem on your hands” he suggested with a Cheshire smile, leaning back in his chair and extending his legs.
“No, not a problem” Destiny responded, shaking her head, “I knew when we first got together that my opinions on the subject would have to be cast aside. What is marriage if not compromise?”
Caius snorted, an unamused noise as he waved his hand in front of him. “Maybe you just married the wrong person” he mused.
She rolled her eyes and tossed the pillow she was playing with at him. He smacked it away like a gnat and narrowed his eyes, his thoughts racing on how he could widen divide between the good doctor and his not so good wife.

Biden will direct the U.S. military to undertake the mission alongside allies and humanitarian partners, a senior administration official said. The project will take “a number of weeks to plan and execute” and will involve forces already in the region or that will be there soon. Senior administration officials said the project will not require any U.S. boots on the ground in Gaza. Instead, the plan involves U.S. personnel on military vessels offshore who will not be required to go ashore to install the port. Initial shipments of supplies would come via Cyprus, enabled by the U.S. military and partners. Officials said the U.S. would work with the United Nations and other humanitarian partners to distribute aid across Gaza once it reaches the port.
There are thousands of aid trucks sitting at the Egyptian border that could be allowed in instead of this ridiculous convoluted plan which means
This is an excuse to officially send in US troops into Gaza where they will help the IDF continue their genocide in the name of aiding Palestinians
"The project will take “a number of weeks to plan and execute”" meaning there is no intention of ending the genocide any time soon
The last part is most important and the one that should scare us the most given the already horrific conditions of Northern Gaza

some elf planet "fish"
took some time to finish these while working on another, larger, more tedious project. ramblings under the cut lol
Amabie from Japanese folklore, said to give prophecy of either bountiful harvests or an epidemic when it appears. most depictions are of a small, upright creature with the beak of a bird, long hair, three tail-legs, and a diamond shape around the eyes.
they live in the warm, shallow waters surrounding small equatorial islands. elves will use their tough scales for making jewelry, if they are to find any washed ashore. it's thought to be bad luck to take one from its home, but great luck to find one in the sand, and the scales are said to ward off misfortune. they're shy and hard to locate.
Lusca from Bahamian folklore, said to reside in the blue holes off Andros, attacking those who venture too close. most depictions are of a half-shark half-octopus creature, though some have a dragon half rather than shark, and some are just big cuttlefish.
they live in equatorial waters and, where possible, take shelter in underwater cave systems. they are far more common than tales from elderly elves in coastal villages would suggest. they aren't malicious, though they are opportunistic, and will eat any other creature they can feasibly fit in their mouths. elves in small boats are warned to be especially cautious, as they tend to explore with their mouths, even if harboring no ill intent.
Aspidochelone your classic "animal with island on its back" myth. depictions range from whales to turtles to crabs. sailors will mistake it for an island, anchor their ships to it, and get dragged into the water once the creature feels the fire they light.
they're found all over the world except for in polar waters, cultivating many hundreds of types of macroalgae on their backs. some elves who know how to approach them properly can climb atop these massive beasts to use as something of a kelp garden, knowing there are very few creatures who would prey upon them. some rare macroalgae varieties grow exclusively on their bodies, adapted to a life cycle of constant movement and migration.
Utelif allegedly found along the African coast, from Guinea to Ethiopia. the saw is supposed to grow from its forehead as opposed to its nose (a detail i neglected </3)
they range from the southern seas to the equatorial ocean of the planet. they are prized for their flavor and size but remain abundant due to the danger inherent in hunting a swift, agile creature with a serrated beak. they are not aggressive, and in fact are known to be friendly with elves, but approach is warned against as the slightest idea of danger will make them bolt, turning even a peaceful float along the waters into a possible bloodbath.

Hello everyone!! I want to bring attention to these three gofundmes here as these people have reached out to me. Unfortunately, I can’t donate myself, but I can post these campaigns so somebody who can donate will. All of these families are still so far away from their campaigns goals. The bombing and shelling in Gaza have been getting worst and worst and due to the skyrocketing prices and lack of medical care, food, water, everything these people literally cannot afford to be sick or injured, please please PLEASE if you have the means to donate then please do. These people NEED you to survive and escape Gaza so they can finally hopefully live comfortably again. Please read their stories in their gofundmes and imagine if it was you or a loved one living through these conditions. Please donate and share this around if you can't donate, time is running thin for these families.

In Irving's dream the screen showed the word "Montauk" at one point, I wanted to see what that word meant and this is what I found
1. "The Montauk Monster" was an animal carcass that washed ashore on a beach near the buissines district of Montauk, New York in July 2008. The identity of the creature and veracity of stories surrounding it have been the subject of controversy and speculation
2. "The Montauk Project" is a conspiracy theory that alleges there were a series of United States government projects conducted at Camp Hero for the purpose of developing psychological warfare techniques and other exotic research. The stories began allegedly with accounts from Preston Nichols and Al Bielek who claimed to have recovered repressed memories of their own involvement. Preston Nichols also claims he was periodically abducted to continue working against his will. The topics revolve around government experiments in fields of extraterrestrial contact, time travel and among other thing mind control.

Cathead
The end of the stout timber projecting out from her bow is decorated with a carved and gilded crown. The cathead was often carved with a cat or lion’s head, which presumably frightened away wharf rats. As the massive iron anchor is brought up from the bottom and gets closer to the hull, there is the danger that the flukes could damage the hull, especially in rough waters. The cathead allows this operation to be carried out a short distance away from the hull.
Tumblr media
Cathead of HMS Surprise (x)
A special tackle is fastened to the ring of the anchor and it is fished and catted (brought up and secured) in its riding position on the bow.
The black loop of rope that holds the anchor to the cathead is the “stopper”. This could simply be cut through to drop the anchor. The main anchor cable is bent onto the ring. The ring itself has been wrapped in cord as an anti- chafing measure called “puddening”.
A second ‘cat head’ was connected to a ship's anchor cable and windlass. This was a square pin that was inserted into one of the hand spike holes of a ship's windlass. When the ship was at anchor, the anchor rope (also known as a cable or catfall) was attached to it with a smaller rope, known as a seizing. The English name for this bolt was ‘Norman’. In German, however, it was called a ‘Kattenkopf’, and in this case this is a reference to the traditional way in which the tip was notched and bevelled so that it resembled the ears of a cat in cross-section.
According to ‘The Sea-mans Dictionary : or, an exposition and demonstration of all the parts and things belonging to a shippe’ compiled by Sir Henry Mainwaring, 1623 , the term was already in use at the time the book was published.

uhhhh whoops [hands Dr. Pines a memory vial from @aroace-get-out-of-my-face 's Memory Vial au where Stan dies from the memory gun]
uh oh
[A vial pops out of the journal like a pop up book]
How did you even-... Nevermind.
[Ford popped the vial into his monitor and watched as Stanley's life flashed before his eyes.
The first few memories, he recognized. The sound of the ocean washing ashore with laughter, with nonsensical stories they both made up to tell each other, the birthdays the spent, the Stan O' War.
The memories sped by, years of growing up together going by so fast, barely even 5 minutes before they reached the final year they spent together. Ford watched as they were both called to the office with only one staying behind. He watched as Stan listened in on the conversation, sliding down the door as he realized his brother would leave him behind.
Ford watched Stan enter the gym after school hours. He'd be lying if he said he didn't dread to see what truly happened that night. He believed Stan to be a horrible person, a traitor who never wanted Ford to have a better future. Now, he wanted to believe Stan never did it on purpose, that what he thought would contradict with what he knew Stan was like.
Ford watched Stan hit the table, barely touching the project. Ford watched as Stan scrambled to fix his mistake. Ford wanted to scream.
Ford wanted to scream and let everything out. He believed Stan to be such a selfish person, a complete opposite of what he truly was, because if he believed the latter, that Stan really didn't break the project on purpose, then that would mean he was kicked out for nothing. That Ford had let his 17 year old brother—barely even an adult—to be kicked to the curb outside of their house.
He quickly realized his mistake when he saw the confrontation much clearer.
They were both so young, naive, closer to 12 than they were the next time they'd see each other.
Ford saw all the pain right after. The failed scams, the shattered hopes, the ever-growing amount of states he was banned in. He saw the prison, he saw too many hands on his brother, a blurry haze, ropes on his brother's wrists and ankles as he was shoved into a trunk, his brother's legs too close to the edge of a bridge.
He saw the postcard.
He saw how fast Stan drove just because Ford called for his help. Because at his core, that's what he always did. Help him.
He saw the fight, the burn, and he saw how it diverged from his dimension. Stan punched Ford, and he couldn't be more proud.
He saw Stan's desperate pleas as Ford disappeared into the portal. He saw the years he spent juggling his work and fixing the portal.
Ford couldn't help but put his hand out to his brother. He couldn't help him. He couldn't protect him. Couldn't comfort him from his own hurtful words against himself. Every comment, every hair pull, every slap to his own face felt like a stab to his heart.
The only good thing that came from it was being able to see Stan age. He saw how he would've looked if he lived past 27.
He saw a few kids in between. His employees.
He saw how he pretended to not care about them, but smile at their antics.
He saw two more kids. Infants. Shermie's grandkids. He saw how Stan held them and refused to let go.
He saw their summer.
He saw his return.
He saw how Ford had given Stan a deadline and a deal. To kick him out when the summer ends.
All the memories whizzed pass again. Every bonding moment, every hug from Dipper and Mabel, every cold shoulder from Ford, he saw it all.
He saw the end of the world.
Ford saw Stan mourning the kids and his brother, fates unknown in the apocalypse.
He saw the argument, how Ford couldn't keep his mouth shut and get along, how he couldn't even give him a simple thank you.
He saw Stan's sacrifice. How he punched Bill in his stupid looking eye.
"Heh, guess I was good for something after all..."
And Ford sobbed. He was already shaking, trembling at how much pain he still went through had he not taken the journal.
The memory ended, and so did Stan's life.]
Thank you for showing me this.

Drones and artificial intelligence are uncovering ghost nets from 50 centimeters to larger than five meters along the coastline of the Gulf of Carpentaria, proving the success of a program aimed at maintaining the pristine environment of this region. The project, led by Charles Darwin University's (CDU) North Australia Center for Autonomous Systems (NACAS) in partnership with the Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers, began surveys last year with the goal of mapping the distribution of ghost nets washing ashore the Anindilyakwa Indigenous Protected Area (IPA), which covers nearly 1,000 km of NT coastline.

1,100-Year-Old Sealed Amphora Found in Shipwreck off Turkey
An extraordinary discovery has been made in the crystal-clear waters off the Kas district in Antalya, Türkiye. Archaeologists conducting underwater excavations with the help of robotic technology have recovered a 1,100-year-old sealed amphora, igniting excitement in the world of archaeology.
Led by Associate Professor Hakan Oniz, Chair of the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at Akdeniz University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, a 20-person dive team has been working meticulously on this groundbreaking project.
The excavation is carried out under the “Heritage for the Future Project” by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, on behalf of the Antalya Museum.
Tumblr media
Excavating the depths with robotic precision
Focusing their efforts near Besmi Island off the coast of Kas, the team utilized advanced underwater robots to conduct excavations several meters below the surface. At depths of approximately 45-50 meters, the divers successfully retrieved a sealed amphora from the wreckage of an ancient ship, a moment described as thrilling by the team.
Rather than being brought directly ashore, the amphora underwent an initial conservation process before being transported to the Akdeniz University Underwater Archaeology Laboratory in Kemer. Using microscopes and specialized magnifying tools, experts carefully examined the artifact. Then, specialists from the Antalya Regional Conservation Council and laboratory restorers meticulously opened the sealed amphora for an hour, employing chisels, hammers, and delicate instruments.
Tumblr media
A glimpse into the past, locked away for over a millennium
As the ancient seal was broken, archaeologists eagerly examined the texture, content, and even scent of the material inside the amphora to determine its nature. Samples have been collected, and detailed scientific analyses are now underway to identify the contents with certainty.
The opening of the amphora and the preliminary examination of its contents were exclusively documented by Anadolu Agency.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ancient trade routes revealed
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, excavation leader Associate Professor Hakan Oniz shared that the merchant vessel likely originated from the Gaza coast in Palestine and sank during a violent storm in the Mediterranean around 1100 years ago.
At that time, Gaza was a major exporter of olive oil, and it is believed that wine was shipped from the region of Sarkoy-Gazikoy in Tekirdag as well.
“This was a trading ship that visited multiple ports during the ninth and 10th centuries, a period dominated by Abbasid rule. Although amphoras thought to have carried wine were found onboard, it is unlikely that the local Palestinian population consumed wine at that time. Instead, it may have been intended as gifts for Christian pilgrims or travelers visiting Jerusalem,” Oniz elaborated.
Tumblr media
‘A unique find that defies time’
Oniz emphasized the rarity of the find, stating, “It is incredibly rare to discover an amphora whose seal remained intact for more than a millennium. It could contain olive pits, olive oil, wine, or even fish sauce—but it might also be something entirely unexpected. Opening the amphora was thrilling, but awaiting the final analysis is even more exciting.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Long road ahead for scientific analysis
Professor Meltem Asilturk Ersoy from Akdeniz University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering noted that this was her first time studying the preserved contents of a sealed amphora.
Describing the interior contents as “muddy samples,” Ersoy added, “We aim to understand what has happened inside over 1,100 years of exposure to underwater pressure and temperature variations.”
“A single test is not sufficient. We need multiple analyses to corroborate our findings, so this process will be lengthy. By combining the analysis results with historical knowledge from the era, we aim to offer significant insights to the world of science and archaeology,” Ersoy said.
Meanwhile, Rabia Nur Akyuz, the restorer-conservator who handled the desalination and opening of the amphora, highlighted the delicate nature of the process. “We had to ensure that the artifact remained wet at all times to prevent the external deposits from drying out,” she explained.

Stargazing
Summary: Carlisle wakes up Destiny in the middle of the night to stargaze, their favorite thing to do
Ashore Masterlist
Warnings: none, pure fluff
A/N: I have trouble with descriptions because of my Aphantasia so I’m sorry that this gets a bit wordy and monotonous but I liked the fluff and would definitely be the Carlisle indulging type
Tumblr media
Carlisle waking Destiny up in the middle of the night, peppering her face with kisses. She groaned softly, blinking the sleep out of her eyes before nuzzling back into the bed as she opened her eyes and smiled at him. “Do you feel up to a little adventure, love?” He asked softly, leaning down to kiss just above her eyebrow. She nodded and bit her lip before asking what they’re doing. He raised out of bed and grabbed her by the hands, helping her out of bed. Using his vampire speed, he rushed into the closet, grabbing a thick sweater and then rushing back. She smiled sleepily at him before raising her arms above her head. Carlisle raised an eyebrow at her, pausing to watch as she stuck her bottom lip out, pouting at him. Shaking his head, he gently pulled the oversized sweater over her head, indulging his mate. He brushed her hair back with his palm and kissed the side of her head before picking her up bridal style and whisking her into the night.
Next thing she knew, she was being laid gently on her back onto what felt like a blanket laid over the grass. Opening her eyes back up, she looked up at her mate, hovering above her. He smiled, a wide grin as he mapped out the planes of her face once again with the tip of his finger. His eyes roamed her face, landing on her lips, as he looked at her with smoldering eyes and gently leaned down to capture them with his own. He kissed her sweetly, caressing her lips with his own. When he could hear her heart beating quickly against his chest, he pulled away and leaned his forehead against hers. She was bit her lip, panting softly. After giving her a moment to catch her breath, he kissed her gently once more before moving onto his side next to her.
“Alice said the stars were going to be beautiful tonight. I thought you might want to see them” he murmured, explaining their impromptu trip.
The widest smile graced her face as she gasped at the scene above her. The stars were breathtaking. She could see so many different constellations, more than she could name. She curled up closer to Carlisle as he draped a headed blanket over her body. Her face was leaning against his chest as he spoke softly, pointing out the different constellations that he knew. After he finished with his knowledge, they laid in silence for a couple of hours. He would have believed her to be asleep if it weren’t for the sound of her blinking and the subtle tilting of her head to see as many stars as possible. Eventually she pulled back from his chest to gaze onto his face. Gently running her fingers along his jaw, she whispered, “thank you”, as she tilted her head to kiss the underside of his jaw before capturing his lips.

Biggest galaxy brain moment from visiting the Dune dunes is that it gave me a whole new perspective on why the terraforming of Arrakis is treated with such deep ambivalence by the text. Because the terraforming process that's described in great detail in the book? That's exactly what's happening to the Oregon dunes. And they're disappearing.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the 20th century, the open sand you see in this picture stretched all the way to the Pacific Ocean, which is visible here as a faint blue-gray line about halfway up the photo. The sea washed new sand ashore, and the seasonal wind cycles blew it into a constantly-shifting landscape of dunes, tree islands, ghost forests and both permanent and ephemeral lakes and rivers.
As European colonization of the Pacific Northwest grew, the new settlers and the logging and commercial fishing industries they brought with them wanted permanent towns and roads that weren't constantly being swallowed by the moving sand. Starting in the 1930s, European beachgrass and other non-native species were introduced to try to hold the dunes in place.
The invasive species did hold the dunes in place--too well. The deep roots of the beachgrass shaped the sand blowing in off the beach into a permanent dune parallel to the ocean, called the foredune.
Tumblr media
As the foredune got taller, it blocked both wind and the movement of sand, which allowed the land behind it to become grassland...
Tumblr media
then forest.
Tumblr media
Walking through this area, you might never know there was a dune under your feet. You can be close enough to hear the ocean, but there is almost NO wind--the main force that shapes the dunes.
There are (slow, difficult) remediation efforts underway to control the European beachgrass and restore at least some of the area to the natural dune cycle that created the miles and miles of open sand. But the ecological feedback loop created by introducing the beachgrass is stubborn, and without any further intervention, the dunes could be completely covered with forest in as little as a few decades. (I've heard estimates from 50 to 150 years, both of which are a blink of an eye in geological timescales.) The Oregon dunes are at least 100,000 years old, and within the span of just a few human lifetimes the ecosystem could be irrevocably changed.
The dune stabilization project is what Frank Herbert came to Florence to research for a never-written magazine article. Herbert began writing Dune in the mid-1950s, but by the mid-60s when the book was published, his own politics had shifted as he was influenced by the growing environmental movement and by Native activism happening around him in the Pacific Northwest. Like the story of the Oregon dunes, the terraforming of Arrakis is initially promoted as triumph of science and human rationality over nature that will make people's lives easier. But it ends up destroying the native ecosystem and the way of life of the planet's indigenous people, as becomes clear in Dune Messiah when Paul actually implements the terraforming project. (In the book, Dr. Kynes, the main architect of the terraforming project, dies in a spice blow--literally swallowed whole by the planet he tried to control.) It's one of the many political/ideological tensions in the story that's presented but not resolved, and I'm super curious to see how this element of the story is handled in Villeneuve's Dune Messiah.
All photos above taken by me at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in September 2024.
