"Pictures drawn in blood link decades of legacies of people who have been imprisoned and tortured by Israeli guards. A hidden archive of poems, letters, drawings, and handmade objects—containing stories of resistance, messages of despair, and hope—amass behind prison walls. Throughout each resounds a pulsing call for freedom.
I asked my uncle about the first piece of art he produced. "It's not easy to handle where to start, but what I can tell is that Palestinian detainees inscribe their emotions and resist through crafts," he said.
Sometimes prisoners draw on handkerchiefs, or embroider different symbols of life and hope: broken chains, olive branches, white pigeons, Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Dome of the Rock.
Khader showed me what he painted in 1995 in the Asqalan prison as a gift to my mother because he couldn't celebrate her graduation with her. In the piece, a white pigeon holds a letter as it flies to Rafah—my uncle's city. The letter frame is colored blue and red.
"I always used blue in my art," Khader explained. "It reminds me of the blue, wide sky—the sky I couldn't feel for years in prison..."
With all this potential to create, if those detained were free, what creative inventions would they contribute to humanity? How many stories would be released?
"I think I produced more than 100 pieces [while detained]" Uncle Khader said with pride.
Amazed and excited, I asked Khader to show me more handmade art. Suddenly, the conversation changed. His voice faded, his smile disappeared, and his eyes shrunk a little. The wrinkles of age and sorrow were clearly painted on his face.
"Israeli bulldozers entirely demolished our old home in 2004. You were only three years and don't remember. There, under the rubble, I lost all my photos, memories, and handicrafts —the ones I made and the ones my detained friends gifted me after release."
Israel chases Palestinian crafts inside and outside prison. They fear our art. They fear our memories."

a lil mental health update for the dash:
i’ve really been going through it lately. i’m realizing that a lot of the thought patterns that have kept me stuck in situations i don’t want to be in my whole life stem from a disorder that i didn’t even know i had until recently (ocd). i’m feeling frustrated and kinda stuck. stressed, anxious, all of the above. but i’m finally getting it figured out and treating it, so hopefully i’ll feel better soon.

𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐀 & 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐀 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘
just to give you a general idea on it's location; antiva is bordered by the rialto bay, with rivain to the East, the tevinter Imperium to the west and the free marches to the south. it's climates vary, but mostly remain a very north eastern climate. during winter, frequent storms bring bitter cold and frozen precipitation, especially to the northern parts around the bay. while summers are warm and humid, with plenty of rain through most of the country. the majority of settlements are along the coast, including it's 5 major cities. which promotes a vast seafaring culture.
𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 & 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
the symbol of antiva is a golden drake.
antiva takes a great of inspiration from spain and italy. the language and mannerisms of the locals a curious mixture of both. the origins of modern antiva lie in the alliance of pirates and dubiously aligned peoples who favored a safer and more lucrative life on land, as opposed to a life at sea. antiva was already ruled by a king at the time- but they did manage to compromise, and form the culturally rich, and prosperous nation that is antiva at current day.
satinalia is a theodosian holiday. it is accompanied by grand celebration, the wearing of masks, and naming the town fool as ruler for a day. particularly in antiva, satinalia lasts for a week or more, while a week of fasting follows. this holiday is celebrated at the beginning of umbralis ( the beginning of november ).
antiva has a rich history of puppetry. and while the primary purpose of these puppet shows is for entertainment, many street shows comment on and joke about political issues. as well as those in power, and events among the noble and rich. the antivan crows are known to use these shows as a way to send public messages.
𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 & 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬
as a coastal country with bustling ports, it facilitates a great deal of trade, both through piracy and legitimate business. the exports of antiva are numerous and varied, but it is most renowned for its unparalleled wines, as well as its coffee.
other trades antiva is known for:
rubies, diamonds, and pearls.
detailed, and exquisite leatherworking & weaving.
porcelain, and woodworking.
olives, brandy, spices & orange extract.
other foods made and grown locally.
𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬
so, politically speaking, antiva feels like a fictionalized version of a medieval city-state like venice. as a whole it is a plutocratic nation; which means it is governed almost entirely by wealth. though it does have political leaders; most notably a line of kings that has remained unchanged for a very very long time. the real power within the country rests with about a dozen merchant princes. things are run quite strictly within this network, and has worked well this way since antiva was born.
naturally i cannot mention antivan politics without bringing up the antivan crows; who i made a rather large post on here. antiva actually doesn't have much in the way of a military. rather, the reputation of the crows is more than enough to deter any nation who ever considered invading. as the house of crows is the most efficient, most feared, and most expensive guild of assassins in all of thedas. and their home resides at the very heart of antiva.
in addition to the crows however, they do have a maritime presence. a fleet of antivan pirates called the felicisima armada. their presence the leading force in the entire region at current. it gained even more influence when the pirates aided the allied forces in the exalted marches against the qunari, and now poses a serious threat on the waking sea. wealthy merchants often prefer to pay the leaders of the Armada rather than to risk their cargo.
𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐀 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘
so my post doesn't get too long, i'll try to summarize a bit...
this is the capital of antiva, and is a major port-city and center of trade. the city is both beautiful and deadly, much like many of the people there. it's a romantic location known for its wealthy port and robust trade, as well as the wine that is the country's main export. it also houses danger and intrigue as it is the base of operations for the infamous antivan crows. due to its connection to the crows the city also houses the crows' archive and its secret prison, velabanchel.
due to its permissive culture, cntiva city is home to several brothels. which may foster orphaned and bastard children, and these children may then be purchased at auction by the likes of the antivan crows.
it is noted by zev/ran in game that it rains all the time in antiva city, and the flowers there are always in bloom.
alistar mentions at one point that the smell of the city varies. sometimes it smells like a mix of seawater, spices, and wine. other times it smells like rotten fish, and mildew. depends on the day, and where you are.
the city had actually fallen at one point during a previous blight. but was rebuilt rather quickly once it was safe to return to it.
despite having royalty, and a ruling family. antiva city, and much of antiva itself is actually ruled by the merchant princes.

man i know i keep saying it but i am so thankful to everyone who has been patient with me lately. i have posted a little bit about what is going on in my life lately but taken it down just as quickly so i know there is not a whole lot of context? i know i don't owe anyone context, but i still am deeply thankful to everyone who doesn't expect it either.
i've been struggling in a way i haven't in a long time & it's made it really difficult to keep up with the friends i love & the things i love to do. i'm trying to be patient with myself, but i'm honestly a total wreck. a lot of things are about to change for me & i'm trying to figure out how to digest that & how to get those changes moving. it is really hard to accept change for me, even when i crave it desperately. it's just a lot to handle emotionally & mentally & honestly the stress has been manifesting physically as well.
i want to write more than i have the capacity to right now & i want to plot more than i have the capacity to right now & i want to do things i just don't have the capacity to do.
i appreciate the friends that have managed to meet me in the middle during this time & have gone out of their way to spend time on me in calls, games, other things that don't require as much focus. i understand not everyone CAN be around like that too & that doesn't mean i love them any less.
i just know these little bits of verbal interaction have really been like a lifeline for me because like. i'm always feeling very watched now & talking means there's no messages to be snooped on. i'm paranoid as it is & i've recently had a lot of that paranoia validated recently & it's just been a lot. because usually, i am like. haha no i'm just crazy. there's no way this thought is real. but now it is & i don't know what else is & it's just good to have a few tethers to reality separate from the shitshow happening offline rn.
idk i know i am just rambling, but this is just an ' activity will continue to be slow, i want to write, i am not pressuring myself to if i can't ' update& a massive thank you to everyone who understands.

I gotta be honest here, those anons are not trying to do anything "therapist" related. I really doubt any of those anons knew that the cause was traumatic or how traumatic. It's unreasonable to expect them to know that when they just expressed that they were concerned. They were just trying to be supportive and offer a kindness. Your comments, and the comments left by the others on that ask, did nothing but prove that anon right in their fears, and is probably why they were on anon to BEGIN with. They probably didn't want their name attached to it out of fear that they would be treated that way and it just never go away.
I get that you're irritated, but I really doubt all those anons had bad intentions. They didn't understand the details and were hoping for nice things for Benji in the future. Attacking them and using phrases like holy fuck like they had just insulted Benji and sent some disgusting anon hate is exactly how you get people traumatized to not want to interact with other people in the rpc. Upsetting someone for not understanding something that you guys had not been public with is not the answer. Nobody even mentioned a word about how that last anon was leaving kind words and just expressing worry.
You know what it's like to have been badgered and chased out and stressed and anxious. Why would you do that to someone else? Because they're on anon? So there's no name attached to whoever is on the receiving end of how people just reacted to them trying to be nice? They weren't scolding anyone, and your reactions and all those reactions on those replies just proved that anon's point that they should be expecting the worst out of people, because that's exactly what they got for trying to hope better for someone.
This isn't anon hate. I just don't think it's acceptable to treat someone that way just because you don't know who it is. This is not how you get sympathy and understanding for your own trauma or your friend's. It's how you inflict it on other people while shielding yourself from criticism under the blanket of your own trauma. You just explained that you guys had people who treated you a certain way because they could get their backup on you. You know what those replies in that ask look like? A bunch of backup trying to chase that anon and the other ones out. Your trauma is valid, but so is theirs. Now their trauma has been completely justified by the same people who will talk badly about the people who hurt you guys.
Sorry this is long, and I'm sure you're going to be pissed off about it, but it needed to be said, because none of what just happened to that human being just because they used anon is ok. I'm sorry that stuff happened to you guys. I'm also sorry that whole thing just happened to that anon over something that could have been easily resolved with kind words and understanding.
So, I'm not going to delete this and make some vague post about coming to me off anon. I am going to dissect this and respond to this because I'm not Benji. We already have a pretty good idea of who this may potentially be, but it matters not. I'm going to do my best to eloquently explain why people got as upset as they did. I'm not going to call anyone names or be "rude" or "mean". You did your best to type out your opinions and I'm going to respond to it.
No one is out here literally claiming you were acting like a therapist. The tone may not be conveyed, but it's hyperbole. What the anon was doing was giving unsolicited advice on a meme that was meant for well wishes for the New Year. Unsolicited advice in general is seen as a social faux pax of sorts. Benji knows she has an issue with DM's. It's something she's been actively working on. She's been very open about it. Hell, I've been open about how we had a bad experience and if you followed me you likely would have seen some posts referencing it? But okay, let's just assume you never saw anything about: why is it your place to offer advice to a person you barely know? I saw the comments there. No one was even as remotely mean as they could have been. Most were expressing confusion over why the anon felt the need to give Benji long unsolicited advice about how she just needed to get over something she was having trouble with. If the anon was so afraid of having their name attached to it, then maybe they should have rethought sending it in the first place? What happened to "if you can't say it to someone's face don't say it at all?" Even if there wasn't trauma associated with it, that's still not an acceptable thing to do? Benji has been very open about having social anxiety. She's reiterated it constantly. All you've essentially done is tell someone to get over their "social anxiety" in that instance. That's not okay. Well intentioned bad advice is still bad advice.
If the anon is that upset by the phrase "holy fuck" then that's their problem not mine. I've made no secret I swear like a sailor. All this reads like is tone policing someone for being angry their partner was driven to tears by someone's "concern". Have you ever heard the phrase "hell is paved with good intentions"? Yeah, apt here. Intention doesn't matter when your advice was poorly timed and tone deaf. I don't care how much you claim to have "cared or felt concern" for Benji. Just because you feel concern for someone doesn't mean you cannot cause harm. That's the thing though: we have been public. I made a post not even two weeks ago that the issue had come up again? Like we've been very public about the issues we had with our last rpc. But even if we hadn't been, does that give this person the right to give unsolicited advice Benji was not asking for that was tantamount to just "I understand how you feel but you need to just get over it you'll have a better experience if you do. Well wishes for 2025 though!" Do you seriously hear yourself right now?
I don't think this is anon hate, but rather I think you're defending someone who you're probably friends with and they were probably made upset that people thought their "good intentions" were misplaced and unwarranted. Several people sent Benji messages about her issues with DM's and all it comes across is someone badgering Benji about her trauma. She knows she has an issue. She doesn't need people on anon reminding her over and over that she is not healing fast enough from an issue that has caused her no source of frustration and pain. And again, assume the only thing you knew about Benji was that DM's terrified her. That still would not give you the right to go on anon and say "Hey you just need to get over this because you'll have a better experience" because has that kind of advice ever helped anyone? Ever?
You cannot cry "but the anon's trauma" when the anon was the one who didn't stop for two seconds to think that perhaps Benji's aversion to DM's is not normal and the result of a long standing mental health issue. That and the follow up anon that Benji received were centering the anon's feelings and not Benji's (and arguably her feelings should be centered because its her own god damn inbox). I don't go into other people's inbox, leave them vaguely critical messages and when people don't respond to it in the way they want cry "BUT I HAVE TRAUMA". That's not how this works and that's why that follow up anon was a super bad apology. It reaked of centering their own upset and how they felt unsafe over the fact that they drove Benji to tears. "A bunch of back-ups literally going to drive that person out". Not a single one of those replies come even close to badgering a person and driving them out. If you're that thin-skinned then you shouldn't be offering people advice in the first place. No one directed anything at the anon. They were giving support to Benji as friends are allowed to do when their friend is upset. Of course, people are going to comfort someone when they're upset and not the anon who upset them?
And may I reiterate:
They can walk away from it and not face any repercussions. If they chose to come off anon to talk to Benji, Benji would not have dragged them through the mud on the dash, and you wanna know how I know that? Because she still refuses to name the people who put her through hell six months ago. We're not children. We're adults, but when someone comes to us, refuses to talk to either of us off anon about some advice that no one asked for and upset Benji, like?
Sorry this is long, and I'm sure you're going to be pissed off about it, but it needed to be said, because none of what just happened to that human being just because they used anon is ok. I'm sorry that stuff happened to you guys. I'm also sorry that whole thing just happened to that anon over something that could have been easily resolved with kind words and understanding.
Here's the thing: you are probably friends with that anon, and that anon was probably upset their advice was not well received and may feel upset and humiliated about it.
However, that does not mean what they did was okay.
Well intentioned or not, if this person was so concerned about Benji's wellbeing and her inability to handle DM's, you know what they could have done? They could have come to me privately and offered advice I could have passed on to Benji. Hiding thinly veiled criticism behind well wishes and then getting upset when people do not like what is being said means they should probably be taking a long hard look at themselves before offering anyone else advice.
That follow up anon especially could have been a "sorry I kind of overstepped my bounds by offering advice without really understanding the specific set of circumstances that led you to this point" instead of an entire essay about how people were "rude" to them and made them feel unsafe. Because that's expecting the person they upset to center their feelings when the anon was the one who upset Benji. You don't get to upset someone and then expect them to center your feelings. That makes for a really poor apology.
The offer to come talk to us OFF anon privately is still there and we will gladly keep any names out of it as we have ALWAYS done.

Y'know...I just kinda assumed you were all named Dell - I don't know why but the same colored team colors always confused me - Not...NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH YOUR NAME I JUST. THOUGHT THAT'D BE A FUN LITTLE THING TO TELL YOU.
“Huh? Oh, yeah, heh. Don’t get that one too often, but it’s definitely somethin’ I’ve heard before.” Engie puts down his mug of coffee, chuckling heartily to himself. “Bit puzzlin’ to say the least. Took me a bit to figure out why.”
Rolling out a sheet of draft paper, he sketches out a little graph in the corner before moving on to his real work, a small piece of the puzzle he’s worked out on his own.
“From what I can gather, the ‘Dell’ thing started when a whole bunch of brilliant minds got compared to the Conaghers. Real bright folks, got popular by bein’ the Admin’s favorites. Brought somethin’ special to the table.” Spinning the pen in his hand, he gestures to a poster on the wall. Faded by time, but it reads ‘CREATE LIKE CONAGHER’ with a picture of Radigan Conagher. “Star peers, as it were.”
“…Heh, not like I’d call myself one. Flattered t’ think all of us fit under that label to ya, though.” Rusty takes another sip from the mug, hiding a sheepish grin beyond the rim.
