grian and scar have now both been in opposite positions to the original 'cactus ring', and it's so interesting to compare their attitudes to sacrifice on both ends. whether or not scar threw the fight in the cactus ring, he did offer for grian to kill him before it began. grian declined this, but was clearly fighting with the intention to win during the fight itself – he's giving scar a chance, but not sacrificing.

in secret life, scar's on the other end of things. he's fighting another winner – who herself has been sacrificed for previously – and, like grian, is going into what he assumes to be a fair fight... but which is in his favour due to the others' willingness to sacrifice themselves for him. this is a common pattern for winners: in whichever order, they take the win once, and are once willing to sacrifice themselves to let another take it.

cut to wild life.

this time, it's grian in the final two once more, yet again against an – albeit more distant – ally. he's got a win under his belt already, so you might expect him to do what pearl did, what scott did, right? sacrifice their chance at glory to let another taste it for the first time.

and yet:

"Can I win this? I worked so hard on this series, I'd love to win it!"

because here's an important thing about life series!grian: though he's willing to even the playing field, he's not willing to sacrifice – not when it matters. pledge your loyalty to right a wrong, yes; give lives to gain allies hours, yes; refuse others' sacrifices to fight on fair terms, yes. but in the end, no matter how much he wants to stick with friends, no matter how bad he feels about it, no matter how may "i'm so sorry"s he gives – he will put his own life first, in the end.

there's a reason he's the reason for so many of his allies' deaths, after all. and in its contrast, the wild life finale showcases this beautifully.

(and for the record, i don't see anything wrong with this from an out-of-univere perspective – it's been 5 seasons and 3.5 years since Grian's last win, and even if it hadn't been, it's the CCs place to judge fairness, not ours.)

Some design notes below the cut

-both of their expressions are meant to represent the way they felt about the outcome of ep 24. shinji has his eyes on kaworu with an expression of hurt and betrayal meanwhile kaworu is at peace with his decision, eyes closed and unable to see how shinji may feel now

-i know the pilots are never seen wielding weapons themselves in the show and that evas haven't been shown using a sword at any point either however i kind of live for the fact that swords held blade down look like crosses. i couldn't help myself with that one it was too good an opportunity to pass

-hard to tell bc I couldn't put much effort into them but the flowers making up kaworu's bouquet are blue roses, often recognised as a symbol for secret or unattainable love

-whether the way kaworu holds a bouquet makes him look like a bride ready to walk down the aisle or a corpse laying in their casket. well. ill leave the choice up to you

-i also wanted the items they're holding to parallel one another. shinji holds a red sword dripping with blue blood meanwhile kaworu holds blue roses ever so slightly stained by fresh blood. shinji is the only one holding a weapon because he's the only one causing physical harm in the end, and kaworu doesn't have any because he's given up on fighting for his life

Speaking of dating sims, i had an idea of an x-men dating sim too. An au where the brotherhood is just a club with all the baddie mutants. Magneto would be the hardest teacher to date bc he would require so much shit to do for him. (Meanwhile Xavier would be a secret joke ending where he friend zones you bc he assumes your relationship is platonic and maybe if you do something special you can get his actual romantic ending. Thus being the actual hardest route)

not to be meta abt my rook and how i went abt creating them but there is something abt starting them solely with the idea of "you will have no relation to my warden and inquisitor, who are family and had almost a real-life decade of my life dedicated to developing their world" that really gets me going. like. from the very beginning you are on the outskirts. in-game, you were needed as someone new, someone out of the loop, and so narratively, your history is inconsequential. in-game, your backstory is murky at best, and so narratively, you will be by yourself until you find the people you will later be defined by. there is no intricate red string of fate weaving you into decades of families and history; you are the one on the outside who must be brought in. you have no family and thus the family of heroes that came before you will be folklore. you must learn what was inherent to them - what made them. you are thrust into a world that has already been crafted before you, and your creator has leaned into you being no one before your existence.

Man, I'm so happy with Fields of Mistria honestly. As annoying as it is when everyone(myself included) compares all of the new games in the same genre with Stardew, it is still a very good measurement to get an idea if that's what you want out of these games. I can replay Stardew... endlessly probably, but we all know that nothing beats it when you get to experience something as nice as that for the first time. So far none of the games i've tried have managed to really grab me. I'm also kind of a picky prick with games I think lmao. My time at Portia's graphics were such a big turn off for me I couldn't enjoy it(which makes me feel kinda bad bc i think someone gifted it to me ;_;). Sun Haven felt like it was trying to be everything all at once yet still felt lackluster where it mattered to me (I also couldn't come to like any of the characters in that q_q). Dinkum is quirky enough that I've enjoyed it at times, but it also has a different kind of vibe I think. Like it would probably be a lot more fun with a friend or a kiddo. There's probs been other ones as well but my brain is doing me a 404 not found right now. Anyway, Mistria has finally hit the spot for me! I've got nearly 30hrs in it atm and while its definitely an early access, what's there is done well. I'm looking forward to updates and really hope it'll do well. The 90's anime aesthetic is not everyone's cup of tea, but I grew up with that so to me it's a big nostalgia plus.

I understand why it isn't done but man the game over cutscenes for Bismark and Steps of the faith were good. They could use the voice lines from the extreme and savage enrage.

playing old games that were never very popular (at least in the west i suppose) is fun, because sometimes you'll look up a question and get absolutely no answers. or contradicting answers. there is an old ass ign guide for everything in the game, full of broken links. the wiki is very frequently missing information. if the one singular gamefaqs guide can't help you, nothing can.

The headcanons I love the most happen to be the most batshit insane ones... this is especially so for the Pjmoon hcs

Anyway one of those hcs is that the msgical girls used to be LobCorp agents who died and got tossed into the Well to make new abnormalities (and, in Library of Ruina, eventually take on a strange sort of familiar-summoner relationship... similar to a kwami-wielder relationship from Miraculous now that I think about it)
