ATO: UPDATE LOG #3 - DARK MODE, THE RE:KMRG EVENT, FUTURE PLANS FOR ATO, SPRING CLEANING & SOME SHOUTOUTS
Hey guys, Kyle here. I have another update log for you all.
Firstly, now that Malice Malediction is over and Chapter 4 has concluded, it looks like the askblog's gotten some Susie-themed decorations in preparation for the RE:KMRG event. For this event, I'll be using Tumblr's Dark Mode for the first time ever, to really sell the whole thing. Any screenshotted asks will be put onto a black background this time around.
Secondly, I've been asking myself a question: "After we defeat the last two leaders, what else will there be to do?" Well, it's simple. After Phantom 1 and Willam Arase are defeated, it'll be the end of Book 1. I don't want to leave this story behind, especially considering how much it's grown, but the story has to end eventually. With that in mind, why not just make it the end of the first story? I've been calling the parts of the story "Chapters" this whole time, why not have this merely be the end of the first book? Don't worry, I'm not gonna pull anything weird, like rebooting the story or anything. I've actually been thinking this out for quite a while, and essentially, a new threat will be in Book 2. That "DarkStar" group that was mentioned a while back seems like it could be expanded upon there. Essentially, once the Trinity of Fate is defeated and Book 1 is over, the DarkStar group will be the main focus of "Book 2". It honestly seems like an amazing idea. We'll see some old faces again, and some new ones too.
Thirdly, I've completely cleaned out my inbox after the Marian Schaffer ask. The asks in there were either outdated or unusable, though I did use one that had some bios for Adam, Aaron and Jameson in them, and placed them in the bio section on the pinned post.
Finally, shoutout to the AtO All-Star Askers for being the reason why I do what I do: @flowerbarrel/@flowerbarrel-art, @johnlocsin-johnyakuza, @bonedgem, @hollow-henry-official, @meowy2, @flagonking, @hackanon, @violetthunderstorm, @blossomaaoc, and @melonsalts/@ending-the-cycle-ask. Human routine varied based on settlement occupation. Awakening times ranged greatly and were heavily inconsistent over each day. Consistent times were mostly seen from 0830 to 0900. Multiple specimen observed sitting on the edge of their sleep facilitation structure for 25 minutes to an hour in silence.

Hello.
I made my 4th Twitter (now X) account as my latest attempt to make a personal account. I already have a main account where I literally talk about anything. I don't track the number of tweets, retweets, regulate which language to use. Although, I do care about my mutuals who can see what I am saying. Then I have my private account. My rant account since 2022 and until now I still don't have it in me to delete it. I cried out some of my worst heartbreaks there. I also have this third account I made recently. It is a private nsfw account. I post all my horny thoughts and feelings there for self-regulation purposes. I believe I'll go insane and make the most embarrassing mistakes in public if I don't express all these natural but inappropriate feelings and taboo thoughts. So, the point of saying all this is because I am confused as to why I created my 4th account. Was it a consequence of my innate desire for clout? Am I crazy? Or is it really just a sign of being addicted to this website? Like, I can see myself being mutuals with those yapping accounts. I became mutuals with two of them, actually. But I can't match the way they tweet. Ah yes. I have this desire to match the way they tweet to like "fit in". In my big age I still want to "fit in"? Seriously?

Harmony, I was out like a light because of the pills I take for my insomnia issues. They've gotten really bad as of late. Plus the whole thing with the Midnight Channel left me even more tired than usual, so I think I definitely slept through my alarm today.

Make your contact information always visible and ensure all channels are available. Open communication is key and responding to your customers in a timely fashion is critical. This type of fraud happens when an attacker obtains your customers’ credentials via methods like phishing and uses them to pass website authentication. The victims’ password and recovery details are altered, which consequently locks them out of their accounts. With the attacker now in full control of the victims’ accounts, they then make unauthorized purchases billed to your customers.
Because most people use the same passwords across different sites and apps, fraudsters utilize automated credential stuffing tools that test stolen usernames and passwords across varied platforms. These tests are conducted rapidly and simultaneously. These tools employ scripts that tell these platforms that the logins are coming from various IP addresses, allowing them to bypass protections. This is just one of the many methods that hackers use.
From the merchant’s side, you will see an increased frequency in the user’s chargeback requests. You might also see a spike in the user’s login access or attempt, password resets, expensive purchases, change in address, and unusual user behavior. Aside from chargeback costs, ATO may impair your business relationship with your customers.
The best way to prevent your customers from becoming victims is by educating them about securing their accounts and about password hygiene. Introduce them to password manager tools and tell them to avoid unsafe passwords. Unsafe passwords, such as “1234” or “qwerty”, are easy to guess, and bots that are programmed to generate all possible combinations are able to guess easy passwords in an instant. As a precautionary measure, you can integrate tools that prevent your users from using passwords that were already found and listed in a database breach.
Cross-Site Scripting
Cross-site scripting (XSS) targets both online shoppers and store administrators. Hackers inject a script tag that makes websites that don’t sanitize user input vulnerable. This injected script then enables fraudsters to steal credentials, log in as the victim, make fraudulent transactions, and ship them to a different address. This can be tracked by investigating the address change versus the user’s usual shipping address. This is also evident when you see the user’s logins coming from another state or country.
When hackers get a hold of a store administrator’s access, they acquire control over a number of things. They are able to process large volumes of fraudulent orders, delete your store data, alter your receipt processing, and gain access to your customers’ contact details and other information.
To resolve this, we need to secure those that are vulnerable to XSS attacks, such as websites, third-party systems, apps, and plugins.

Starting headings with a verb makes them action-oriented and more engaging. Users are more likely to see their key words as they scan your page.

If FAQs are so bad, what can we do instead of creating an FAQ page?

To make sure you’re only moving relevant and appropriate content, start this process with an FAQ audit.
Audit the FAQs
Gather a list of all the FAQs. My preference is to do this in a spreadsheet and identify:
the user need
the topic it most relates to
location of where the info belongs on the website
if it’s duplicated or already answered in the content
if it’s a true frequently asked question or if you can cull it
Move FAQ content into the relevant web pages
Map the FAQ content you’ll keep to the relevant page on the website.
Check if the page already addresses that question. If it does, there’s no need to add the FAQ content.
The only reason to include an FAQ format on this page is to address the SEO benefits through keyword targeting. We’ll cover this in more detail further on.
Test the IA
When a client’s site is undergoing a redevelopment, it’s the perfect time to assess the need for their existing FAQ page.
The new IA should capture the most likely place for the FAQs.
I use Treejack by Optimal Workshop to test IAs. Upload your menu headings, set user tasks, recruit users to complete those tasks. You’ll soon figure what’s working and what’s not working well with your menu design.

Just because someone asked a question once back in 2017, it doesn’t build a business case for the website to include it.
So, what does?
Call centre staff, especially if they log call data, are a brilliant source of data. Sales staff also know the main objections and questions potential customers have about a product or service.
There are no definitive criteria for FAQ governance, you can set the criteria with your client. Consider if frequently asked questions:
are true FAQs
have evidence to back up that they are an FAQ
are not self-promotion
have already been answered in the page content
highlight a flaw in the site’s IA
need further user testing
are keywords that need to be included for SEO purposes
When FAQs work well
In most situations, if you or your client thinks you need an FAQ page, the content or menu structure isn’t doing its job well.
I hate blanket rules — that’s why I say ‘most’ situations.
There are a few situations where FAQs can work well. For example, they can work well:
When you have a transaction-based eCommerce site and need to cover shipping and returns information.
For an event or conference that has a lot of details about the logistics of the event.
For a sales page where you can use the FAQ format to counter objections. You also want to keep the user on the sales page, rather than sending them elsewhere to find the information. You might lose their attention during the sales process if you send them elsewhere to find the information they need.
But for everything else, let’s ditch the FAQ page and incorporate the information into the relevant place on the website.
FAQs and their impact on SEO
With the rise of voice search and the valuable real estate of search engine results pages up for grabs with rich snippets, questions and their answers have become an important component to include in your web content.
I’m not saying no to FAQs full stop. I’m saying no to FAQ pages and FAQs as a main menu heading (unless you’re ultra-specific – like the ‘Shipping FAQs’ for an eCommerce store).
But ditch the standalone FAQ page.

10 things to do now to take control of your 2019 taxes.
With the year nearly over, thinking about next year’s tax may be the last thing you want to do.
However, mid-year tax planning is essential, according to advice issued today by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ).
“Taxes are not just an annual event,” said Michael Croker, CA ANZ Australian Tax Leader.
“Some Australians stress out about tax, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
“Preparing for your 2019 taxes throughout the year can not only make the tax return process smoother, but it may also help to maximise your return”.
Here’s 10 things you can do now to take control of your 2019 taxes:
1. Look back at last year’s return
Hopefully by now you’ve already filed your 2018 return.
If you haven’t, now’s the time to get cracking!
However, if you’ve already done this year’s taxes, take some time to reflect back and think about the areas that were particularly demanding or complex for you.
Now is the time to plan, so that your next tax return is stress-free.
2. Set up a system
Much like skinning a cat – there’s more than one way to organise your tax records.
Don’t wait until the end of June to start organising your important tax documents and receipts.
Have a system to keep everything in one place.
3. Adjust your PAYG withholding or hang out for a tax refund?
Why is it important?
The amount of PAYG tax withheld each pay day determines whether you’ll get a refund, break-even, or owe tax when it comes to filing your tax return.
Whether you want your tax return to act as an annual savings plan, or prefer to break-even, the goal is to eliminate any surprises at tax time.
4. Retain your receipts
If you own a business or plan to claim taxable deductions, it is imperative you hold onto your receipts.
Whilst receipts are not needed when filing your tax return, they are usually required should the Australian Tax Office (ATO) decide to audit your tax return.
There are helpful smartphone apps to help keep track of your outgoings, but when it comes to filing, you should speak to your local Chartered Accountant about what you can and can’t claim, as it varies person to person, and year to year.
This is especially true of big-ticket deduction claims, like car expenses, travel and self-education.
5. Chart your charitable contributions
Fortunately, doing good for others has the benefit of giving your tax refund a boost.
Keep records of all tax-deductible gifts and contributions you make over the year.
6. Sort your super savings
Employers pay 9.5% of employee earnings into super, but are you thinking about contributing more for your retirement yet?
If you have some funds to spare, extra contributions can be tax effective.
Learn more about your super. Log into your super fund account, check your balance, and know what’s going on including what option(s) you have invested in.
Also make sure all your super accounts are consolidated into one as having multiple accounts means paying multiple fees, so take the time to roll your accounts into one if that makes things easier and less costly for you.
7. Check for new tax rules and policies
Tax and super rules change constantly so don’t wait till tax time 2019 to check-in with your accountant for an update.
There may have been tax breaks you have taken advantage of in the past that are no longer applicable, or there may be tax legislation changes that have come into effect impacting how much tax you will owe.
With a Federal Election coming in 2019, think about the tax policies of the major parties and the impact on your finances.
It pays to know.
8. Don’t make financial decisions based solely on potential tax breaks
The ATO offers plenty of deductions that have the potential to reduce your tax liability.
But if you’re spending the cash just to get a tax break, you may end up worse off.
9. Plan for the unexpected
Nobody likes receiving an unwanted tax or super top-up tax bill – let alone an unexpected one.
The ATO expects you to manage your cashflow and pay your tax when due.

When it comes to managing your finances, you want to be sure that your money is being cared for in the best, most professional way possible.
