Over the past few months I made this list for fun to show some of my family how Audi (as with most other automobile companies) share engines between models. I also wanted to show that just because two engines may look similar, doesn’t mean they are, they can have drastically different specifications. For instance, the 4.2 V8 in the B7 S4 is similar to the 4.2 in the C6 A6 (albeit tuned differently); however the 4.2 in the B7 RS4 is a whole ’nother animal.
The list started with the B7 A4, S4, and RS4 and I got a bit carried away!
**Some notes**
I’m know the list probably isn't perfect, but this more so just for fun and for having a list right in front of you where it is easy to compare details. Most of the data in here is from the top of my head (ha, I wish), from years of reading about cars in magazines, forums, websites, etc. and of course, I had a bit of help Wikipedia.
The data in this list represents the American versions of these models; however, I included some notable models from the European market, just to compare them (or because I’m envious we didn’t get them in the United States…yes you, C6 RS6). I’d happily add more from other markets later.
For some models I have a side note saying Europe only, I know these models may have also been available in parts of Asia, Latin America, or other countries/continents; I mean no disrespect, I’m just not as knowledgeable about the availability of models in those other countries; but as I learn more, I’ll happily go more in depth about specific markets and which models are offered there.
Also, I didn’t include diesel engines; I plan on adding them at some point.
The horsepower is in brake horsepower, I know that isn’t the only thing that matters, but it’s what I have so far. Initially I was just going to put the engine configuration and displacement but I wanted to add the hp ratings to show that just because it’s the same engine configuration/size doesn’t mean it’s the same power. If anybody has dyno results or wheel horsepower numbers for any of these models that they would like to share, feel free to let me know and I’ll start making a list to add them in the future.
I am aware that my generations (B6, B7, C6, etc.) aren’t perfect and may not match up exactly. This started just as a list for the A/S/RS4 models, then I added the A/S/RS6, and then I figured I’d add pretty much everything else. I tried to fit the generations for different models/chassis’ into a similar time frame when they were using the same engines across different models.
Also I know the T and TT may not match the badging on the car (for instance the I put 4.0TT for the C7 S6 even though the badge on the fender says 4.0T). I’d rather show if it is a single turbo engine vs. a twin/bi-turbo engine than match the badging. However, I kept the T for the supercharged 3.0 V6 engine. I considered writing it as 3.0S or 3.0S/C but I figured that would just make it more confusing, especially mixed in with the S4, too many S’s. However, doing this may have made it more confusing, so I might change it to S/C down the line.
Eventually I’ll add more to this list, make it look a bit nicer, and touch up my grammar (I fall victim to run-on sentences)... I’ll update along the way!
I plan on adding more vehicles, such as Allroad models, SUVs and crossovers. I would also like to add older vehicles, such as the 4000, 5000, and Quattro. On top of that I think it would be fun to include some rally cars, but the engines and power seemed to fluctuate so much race-to-race, so we’ll see. Either way it’d be awesome to compare Audi’s production engines to engines like the crazy inline-5 in the Group-B Quattro that Walter Röhrl drove at Pikes Peak.
I also would like to add more details on the cars/engines later, such as lb-ft torque, whp, quarter mile times, 0-60 times, weight, drivetrain (for the few FWD cars and the RWD R8 V10 RWS), top speed (restricted and unrestricted), differentiate more on body styles (Avant, Cabrio, coupe, saloon/sedan, etc.), and mention if it was produced at quattro GmbH / Audi Sport Gmbh.
At some point I might color code the engines or something along those lines... I mean the initial reason I made this list was to show how different models share engines (although with slightly different tunes/internals) so it would be helpful to have the similar engines to stand out.
Finally, I am not perfect, and I whipped this together pretty quickly last night. I know I can clean it up a bit, and there may be some mistakes, feel free to let me know as I am open to constructive criticism.

Electricity Is Shaping The Future Of Audi Design

When it comes to consistently compelling automotive design Audi is arguably the most successful automaker of the past quarter century. When the first Audi TT debuted in 1998, based on a concept car from 1994, it was seen as a paradigm shift in vehicle design. This watershed moment came not only from the TT’s groundbreaking exterior shape and proportions, but for its comprehensive attention to interior design details that echoed the car’s exterior themes. The TT was by no means Audi’s first triumph of design, but in the two decades since that TT concept’s debut the brand has been on an unrivaled design winning streak.
Marc Lichte, the Head of Audi Design, sees a bright future for bold, beautiful EVs
You won’t find a single individual behind 25 years of Audi’s design dominance, though the brand’s current head of design, Marc Lichte, did join the VW group in 1996, halfway between the TT’s transition from concept car to production car. As a young VW designer he likely had little to do with that first-gen TT, though he did oversee designs for the VW Golf, Passt, Touareg and Arteon before becoming Head of Audi Design in 2014. With an 18-year history at VW prior to joining Audi, Lichte had a front-row seat to the luxury brand’s design achievements. And Audi’s continued success, both aesthetically and financially, confirms Lichte was up to the challenge of maintaining Audi’s streak.
The next 25 years of design, for both Audi and the entire automotive industry, will be even more challenging. The introduction of increasingly advanced driver-assist systems, the expanding role of connected car technology, and, most importantly, the imminent transition from internal combustion to electric powertrains, will challenge every aspect of vehicle development, including design.
The basics of compelling vehicle design are supported by electric vehicle drivetrains
We recently spoke to Marc Lichte about Audi’s future product plans and how they’ll reflect the next-generation of Audi vehicles. He told us the foundation for beautiful vehicle design starts with the proportions, and that the nature of electric vehicles supports excellent proportions. Key elements include large wheels, short overhangs, a low hood and a slim, low roofline over a muscular body. Electric vehicles, with no engine and a low-mounted battery pack, support all of these elements, as reflected in Audi’s newest EV, the e-tron GT.
For this reason Lichte is confident the next-generation of Audi’s EVs will be the most attractive cars the brand has ever offered. In fact, the sleek, expressive design of the new e-tron GT production car is nearly identical to the concept vehicle that preceded it because the EV drivetrain allowed the concept car’s dramatic design cues to work on the full production model. And, like the Audi TT, Lichte assured us the interior design of the e-tron GT will be just as dramatic as its exterior.

Lichte told us another benefit of an EV’s more compact powertrain is an increase in cabin space without growing the exterior dimensions. This means even a low slung four-door coupe like the e-tron GT (its roof is 2.75 inches lower than an Audi A7) can offer expansive interior space and comfort for four adults. That kind of space efficiency likely won’t end the rush to SUVs, but it will ensure a healthy balance between form and function for Audi buyers seeking utility from their sporty sedans. It was this balance of sporty design and capable performance (remember, EVs and their instant torque are notoriously quick) that lead to the “GT” component of the e-tron GT’s name, despite its four doors and four-passenger capacity.

Lichte told us the e-tron GT is the first in a series of near-term future Audi electric vehicles, all of which will maximize the design freedom that comes with an EV powertrain. This includes a smaller four-door EV sedan as well as the Artemis Project, which, in Lichte’s words, “reflects Audi’s vision of self-driving cars, where the cabin isn’t built around the human driver but around humans as passengers.”
No specific details were given on how the Artemis Project will manifest in terms of design, but we predict yet another radical departure when Audi’s design capabilities are squarely focused on passenger needs. Think TT watershed moment. Again.

If for some reason you just can’t jump on the RS6 Avant bandwagon (pun absolutely intended), Audi has another option for you: the RS7. With its sleek looks, sharp handling and class-leading cabin tech, the Audi RS7 is one of the best all-around luxury-performance cars you can buy today.

Driver-assistance tech isn’t standard
The RS7 certainly looks the business, all angular and mean, with broad shoulders and wide hips and that classically beautiful Sportback silhouette. I’ll admit I still find the taillights of the current A7/S7/RS7 models to be a little frumpy, but that’s a small nit to pick on an otherwise flawless design. Considering the last RS7 was a little too sedate-looking for its own good, it’s nice to see Audi flexing a bit of design muscle with this latest RS hatch.
On the other hand, I’m equally glad Audi’s designers exercised plenty of restraint when penning the RS7’s cabin. What could’ve been a mess of unnecessary angles and overstyled surfaces is instead quite elegant. The interior isn’t really all that different from what you get in the rest of the A6 and A7 range, but I’m not mad about it. The overall aesthetic is clean and modern, with tasteful accent stitching on the RS-specific seats and no superfluous buttons — just flat, clean surfaces and screens, screens, screens.
Audi currently leads the charge on luxury-car cabin tech and it’s easy to see why. The company’s MMI Touch Response infotainment system is easy to operate, with colorful tiles for the most frequently used features, snappy response times and a relatively intuitive menu structure. The 10.1-inch screen in the middle of the dash houses the main multimedia interface, and there’s a secondary, 8.6-inch display below. That slightly smaller screen is where you’ll find climate control functions and on-off switches for the stop-start system and various driver-assistance features. The bottom display also functions as a handwriting tablet for easy destination search or address entry. Open a nav search, write “tacos” and boom, you’re off to lunch.
The MMI interface is seriously robust, but you don’t even need it most of the time. That’s because the RS7 comes standard with Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster, housed on a 12.3-inch screen head of the steering wheel. This basic tech might be a few years old, but Virtual Cockpit is still the bomb, with Google Earth navigation overlays and simple controls for things like phone, audio and vehicle data via steering-wheel toggles.

Weirdly, while the RS7 comes with Audi’s best multimedia tech offerings, all of the good driver-assistance wizardry costs extra. Yes, a 360-degree camera, parking sensors and forward collision warning are standard, but full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition and rear cross-traffic alert are all locked behind the $2,250 Driver Assistance Package. Why this stuff doesn’t come standard on a six-figure luxury car is beyond me, but it’s also not uncommon, so whatever.
Then again, it’s not like you’re buying an RS7 to let the computers take over every time you get behind the wheel. This thing absolutely rips, and you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to drive the pants off it every chance you get.
The fun starts with Audi’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 — the same one you’ll find in a bunch of other cars, including the RS6 Avant. This engine sends 591 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels through Audi’s excellent Quattro all-wheel-drive system, resulting in a 0-to-60-mph time of just 3.5 seconds. That’s damn quick.
Shockingly, these huge, 22-inch wheels don’t ruin the ride.

Happily, every RS7 gets Audi’s full roster of performance hardware, including an adaptive air suspension, electronic rear differential and four-wheel steering. The last two bits are particularly important, giving this all-wheel-drive car a bit of rear-wheel-drive shove through corners, the rear-axle steering virtually shortening the wheelbase while you slink through tight bends. The RS7 is an incredibly agile thing, with nicely weighted and communicative steering and solid power from the standard steel brakes. You can pay $8,500 to add ceramic brakes with gray calipers, which offer a world of stopping power, but I don’t think you’ll need this upgrade in day-to-day use. If you’re tracking your RS7 or frequently hitting triple-digit speeds, then sure, live it up. For the rest of you, just stick with the steel stoppers.
Regardless of which brakes you choose, they’re nestled behind absolutely massive wheels. The RS7’s standard setup wraps 21-inch wheels in 275/35 tires, but this tester has the optional 22-inch package with lower-profile 285/30 rubber. Audi says the 21s are the smallest-diameter wheels that will clear the RS7’s huge brakes, and the 22s just look like overkill by comparison. Thankfully, the air suspension is tuned to filter out a lot of the harshness you might otherwise expect from such an aggressive wheel-and-tire package. Whether you’re rolling in the RS7’s Comfort or Dynamic modes, the ride quality I observed on Southern California roads is great — smooth and supple on the highway but nice and taut during sporty driving. I’m struggling to think of another car that’s as nicely sorted while riding on enormous wheels — aside from the RS6 Avant, anyway.
I’d personally rather have the wagon, but hey, you do you.

In fact, the RS7 is all-around nicer to drive and live with than its closest competitors, the BMW M8 Gran Coupe and Mercedes-AMG GT63. The Audi is simply better balanced and has sharper in-car tech, and this car’s Sportback shape means it’s far more capacious, with 24.7 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and a whole lot more if you fold them flat. The only thing that comes close is Audi’s own RS6 Avant or a run-of-the-mill crossover. Why buy a crossover when you could get this?
Really, the RS7’s closest competitor is the aforementioned RS6. The RS7 is a bit more expensive, at $115,045 to start (including $1,045 for destination) compared to the RS6’s $110,045. I personally can’t imagine picking the Sportback over the more interesting-looking and more functional Avant, but not everyone shares my opinion. 
No matter the roofline, Audi’s latest RS is a winner.

If German naming conventions have you all twisted-up, understanding the Audi A7 is simple. Think of the A7 simply as a more elegant, stylish Audi A6, incorporating most (if not all) the A6's powertrain options and interior design. Make sense? We hope so, considering you've had eight model years to figure the A7 out. Launched globally in late 2010, Audi's swoopiest four-door didn't make it to the States until the 2012 model year, filling a Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class-sized gap in the automaker's lineup.
First-Generation Audi A7 แม่จำเนียร
Initially, Audi's ubiquitous 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 served as the only source of motivation, with 310 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque routed to the Quattro all-wheel-drive system via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Soon after, the nerd-tastic 3.0-liter turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V-6 hit our shores, now offering 240 hp and a thick 428 lb-ft of torque through the same eight-speed automatic.
With a 0-60-mph run tested somewhere in the low five-second range and a top speed of 155 mph, the bog-standard A7 was hardly a slug, but the later S7 added an extra dollop of speed and performance onto the platform. As the A7 is to the A6, the S7 is essentially a rebodied S6 of the same generation, incorporating the S6's excellent 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 and slick seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A total of 420 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque are on tap, returning a 0-60-mph run in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Model year 2016 saw updates across the board, with the A7 upgraded to 333 hp and the S7 to 450 hp. Along with extra power, the S7 also added upgraded suspension, brakes, tires, wheels, and interior components over the regular A7.
Still not enough? The mighty RS7 is one of the most potent of all Audi four-doors, boosting the S7's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 to 560 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The RS7's 0-60-mph dash takes just 3.7 seconds, while upgraded brakes—and optional carbon ceramics—and revisions to both chassis and aero improve braking and handling. Finally, for the truly power-mad (and wealthy), Audi's 2017 updates brought the debut of the RS7 Performance model, rated for 605 hp and 553 lb-ft and capable of 0-60-mph times in the low three-second range.
Second-Generation Audi A7
The second generation of A7 arrived for the 2019 model year, and landed with the newest variant of Volkswagen/Audi's MLBevo platform, a new turbocharged V-6 engine, and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Stick with the A7, and you'll get a 3.0-liter that puts out 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque through all four wheels and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 0-60-mph dash takes 5.2 seconds, and top speed is limited to 130 mph.
By now, you should know how this goes. The second-gen S7 wasn't long behind the new A7, upping the ante with the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 pulled from the current RS5. This means 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic, cutting the 0-60-mph sprint time to 4.5 seconds, but keeping the top speed limited to 155 mph. Scarier still is the new RS7, packing an updated 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 with 591 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque that allows for a 0-60-mph scuttle in 3.5 seconds. Not convinced? Audi A7 Highlights
The effortlessly handsome Audi A7 wasn't the first fastback sedan, but it was one of the cars that established the segment alongside the groundbreaking Mercedes-Benz CLS, and the A7 remains a staple of Audi's lineup. The A7—and subsequent high-performance variants—aren't at the top of the Audi dogpile in either price or size, but the A7 family possesses some of the strongest aspirational pull and consumer recognition. For many, the RS7 is about as good as a modern four-door can get, both aesthetically and dynamically, and we can't say there isn't a kernel of truth in this. Better yet, even if you don't make the jump to the S7 or RS7, the regular bog-standard A7 is still one of the most luxurious and beautifully packaged vehicles on sale today.
Audi A7 Buying Tips
Figuring out which member of the A7 family to buy breaks down to what you want out of your style-forward German luxury car. If you're in the market for a reliable, trouble-free daily driver, go with a new A/S/RS7; there's little point pumping endless dollars into a second-hand A7 unless you're already a die-hard Audi enthusiast.
If you're OK with driving a used S7 or RS7 as a second or third car for long distance trips or medium-distance use around town, look for a strong maintenance record. If you can't find a good one or maybe can't afford one of the cleaner ones, we say keep walking—this is a case of pay now or pay big later.
When you do find a nice pre-owned example, have it checked out by a local Audi dealer or independent specialist to make sure there isn't anything insidious hiding under those sumptuous bodylines. If there are issues, you shouldn't have any trouble finding parts, however expensive they may be; Audi still provides factory support for A7s both old and new.

Turning Autopilots Into Autonomous Driving Instructors
Picture a globe. Which I’m now going to spin clockwise with my hand. It blurs for a few seconds—North America, Asia, North America, Asia—and then I stop it, on the morning we’re all heading back to our jobs. For me, it’ll start by hopping on the 405 freeway, and it’ll be all smiles merging into that wall of creeping cars again. I miss you, brake lights.
On day two, though, the smile will have collapsed into a pinched line. I react by punching dashboard buttons to turn on Autopilot or ProPilot Assist or Super Cruise if I have them, to soften the abrupt spike in my traffic stress. As will a lot of other people, sprinkled all over the road around me. Some of them, bad actors.
YouTube is rife with misbehavior in Teslas: the guy asleep at the wheel, the “driver” lounging in the back seat, the guy and gal in, um, the front seat (to which Musk tweeted, “Turns out there’s more ways to use Autopilot than we imagined”).
Hardy-har-har. Except not.
Before the Great Calamity started, the Senate Commerce Committee grilled NHTSA on Autopilot abuse, and it got so heated that Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts demanded that it be deactivated until Tesla figured out how to stop people from tricking its steering with water bottles and oranges. (Yes, eye-tracking would help, but aimed eyes don’t mean a focused mind.) In its investigation of Apple engineer Walter Huang’s tragic Model X crash, the National Transportation Safety Board scolded Tesla, NHTSA, and even CalTrans for not promptly repairing a previously damaged crash barrier.
On the other hand, in one of Lex Fridman’s MIT YouTube interviews, there was an interesting response from guest Sebastian Thrun (an expert’s expert: victorious in the first DARPA Grand Challenge, founder of GoogleX, Google’s self-driving program; he’s now with Waymo and currently leads flying-car company Kitty Hawk). Thrun said, “I literally use AutoPilot every day, and it’s kept me safe … specifically for highway driving when I’m slightly tired.”
These are two colliding galaxies: On one side, its abusers on YouTube, angry senators, and a riled NTSB, and on the other, technology experts and devotees who sing its praises. But the problem isn’t the system. It’s the behavior of the people behind the wheel. Us.
In 2018, 36,560 Americans died on our roads, and autonomous technology could save more of them than seat belts and air bags combined. Most of the players developing the new tech are using massive simulation and some private track-testing, sprinkled with real-world data with trained safety drivers to capture the freakier edge cases.
In run’n’ gun, Elon Musk style, Autopilot is instead boot-strapping itself up from Level 2 to near-autonomy by recognizing and uploading things it gets wrong on real highways (via driver interventions or reports), then uses machine learning to improve its algorithms, which then get sent via over-the-air to update its whole fleet’s behavior. As Fridman points out, this is by far the greatest meeting of humans and artificial intelligence on earth.
A couple years ago, I was a member of a small squad of journalists who were safety drivers behind the wheel of an autonomous Audi A7 that traveled from Silicon Valley to Las Vegas. Before we got into the car, we had to do a long driver-training day at a Volkswagen proving ground (mainly to prove we could regain control if things went crazy), whereupon we were phone-interviewed by the California DMV to make sure we were stable individuals before being let loose on public roads. We were issued California autonomous driver’s licenses and took all this very seriously. Folks in Teslas are now experiencing the same autonomous driving I did, but without any of that preparation or soberness.
My proposal: Before Autopilot can be used, a Model 3’s occupant-facing cameras should identify who’s behind the wheel. The car’s screen should deliver realistic expectations of what it can do, warnings about situations it might mess up, and reminders to the driver of the good they can do today.
Rather than being demonized, Autopilot should be appreciated as an incredible opportunity to fast-forward a lives-saving technology by educating it with massive learning from the planet’s driving population. After the globe stops spinning with this health crisis and we rejoin that traffic jam, let’s take our recent good habits of social responsibility and teach Autopilot to save lives, too.

2020 Hyundai Sonata First Look: Is Stunningly Gorgeous Enough?
Full disclosure: For the 2020 Sonata’s design background presentation, Hyundai Motor Group flew me and a small group of journalists to Seoul, South Korea and put us up in the Signiel Hotel that occupies the upper floors of the fifth tallest building in the world (and tallest in the country).
As Top 5 tall buildings go, the Signiel is an impressive testament to man’s singular focus on conquering the surrounding landscape. It also looks like God’s own tweezers jammed into the ground, business end up. Inside, it’s cool, curved and modern, but also sterile and a bit antiseptic. Aside from the stunning views that tall windows at any great height will provide, Signiel is singularly lacking in drama. In short, it’s almost nothing like the 2020 Hyundai Sonata.
Hyundai’s new global head of design SangYup Lee hosted this trip, one of the first to bring international journalists inside Hyundai’s new design center. His aim was to introduce us not only to the new, eighth-generation Sonata, but to communicate how it would be the flagship for Hyundai’s new “Sensuous Sportiness” design language.
In a high-walled interior courtyard meant for examining exteriors in the full light of day, Lee’s team pulled back silk drapes on a pair of 2020 Sonatas, a red car equipped with a 1.6-liter turbo-four “Smartstream” engine, and a gray car powered by Hyundai’s new Atkinson-cycle 2.5-liter four-cylinder, also dubbed Smartstream.
The sheet slid off to reveal a very smooth looking vehicle—and one that draws immediate comparisons to the latest Aston Martin styling, and specific models from Audi (A7) and Mercedes-Benz (CLS), particularly when viewed from the side.
Yes, I’m serious. These were the first brands and models that popped in my head when I saw the car in the metal. If you disagree, it’s because the pictures don’t do the car justice. When viewed in person, in a shade of gray (so all the lines and curves are quietly apparent), the Sonata reveals itself as a monumental achievement of proportion and linework.
Lee and his team massaged the silhouette of the five-seater, shifting the passenger compartment rearward, shortening the front overhang and adding length to the rear overhang, so that it has the appearance of a rear-drive car’s dash-to-axle ratio.
The look is striking, yet very sophisticated. It’s also surprisingly subtle when you review the numbers. Hyundai provided us the following dimensions it used to benchmark itself and the competition:

Compared to the sixth-generation 2011 Sonata that Hyundai considers a landmark for its Fluidic Design language, Lee’s team added 1.7 inches in overall length to the 2020 Sonata along with nearly an inch in width. Height drops by 1.2 inches and wheelbase increases by 1.4. In the front, 0.8 inches of overhang is lopped off and added to the 1.2-inch increase in rear overhang. These are significant inches, but also reflect the category’s increase in size over the intervening years. The 2020 Sonata is now easily within an inch of contemporary competitors Honda Accord and Toyota Camry in every key dimension. And yet it looks so different. How?
Lee’s boss and head of design for Hyundai Motor Group, Luc Donckerwolke has the answer: “Designing sedans is not easy; you fight for every millimeter. This creates a lot of pressure for designers.”
Well the pressure paid off because it’s clear that Lee’s team didn’t just sweat the 2020 Sonata’s sensuous and sporty proportions with millimetric precision, they put lots of thought and effort into the lines and open spaces. The main character line (or A-line in design speak) from the 2018 Le Fil Rouge concept car has been ported over, fully intact, and accentuates the Coke-bottle curves massaged into the Sonata’s bodysides.
As in previous generations, the metal in the Sonata body is all steel; no aluminum here, despite potential weight savings, because one of Hyundai’s corporate cousins (alongside Hyundai shipping, construction and banking/finance) is Hyundai Steel.
“We have good competency in steel, so we will use it,” says Hyundai’s chief engineer, Albert Biermann. To improve crash performance, Biermann says high strength steels and other reinforcements have been placed in three load paths—low, medium, and high—under the Sonata’s shapely skin to help protect occupants by absorbing or redirecting forces around the cabin.
Hyundai designers spent lots of time thinking about how the needs of design and safety can work together. Consider the Sonata’s sleek front end, which is 1.4 inches lower than the previous generation. Nearly all modern cars have hoods that terminate in a bumper containing the grille, more often than not with an obvious/ugly shut line. What distinguishes the Sonata is how the steel (not composite) hood flows all the way to the front of the car ending in an edge above the grille. Lee is quick to mention that the only other car makers that currently do this are Aston Martin and Bentley, his previous employer.
But the story goes much deeper than looks. Engineering such a low and sexy hood to meet pedestrian impact standards meant the engine needed to be pushed down and back. Then there are the sculpted steel front fenders and dazzling headlight array.
“See the deep draw of the front fender and very complicated headlight execution?” asks Lee. “You normally want the [headlight] lens to be as upright as possible for the best optics [and] minimal distortion. And you want the bumper upright for heat dissipation. DN8 [internal code for Sonata] has neither and is not compromised for crash, etc. [The fender and headlights are] very fast, without compromise.”
The most striking element is the strip of bright metal that starts at the base of the headlights and curves around the passenger compartment, before returning to the A-pillar. It’s a nearly unbroken strip of chrome so thoughtfully considered, you wonder why there is a break in it at all. Then the daytime running lights switch on, and the genius is revealed. As you approach the top of the headlight from the base of the windshield, the strip of chrome reflected light gradually gives way to LED lumens. This metal-to-light gradient is achieved by a series of tiny laser-etched holes in the chrome plating that covers the translucent strip of plastic. The holes increase in size toward the headlight cluster, until all the chrome is gone and only light remains.
An aggressive mix of steel, composite and polycarbonate is used for the dramatic rear. The trunk lid and supports are all steel, but the sharp-edge of the rear deck is composite. “Aero fins” atop the polycarbonate taillights emphasize another new design directive. “We’re not doing styling anymore. Every design input also has a functional output,” says Donckerwolke. To that end, the aero fins apparently help add a few pounds of downforce.
Side by side, the 2020 Sonata 1.6T and 2.5 models reveal some hints about what we’ll see in the U.S.-bound production cars. At least two different front and rear bumpers will be on offer. From the Le Fil Rouge concept comes the “parametric jewel” grille seen on the Sonata 1.6T in red. This spicier, sportier version has slightly more aggressive vents in its bumpers, as well as sideskirts, and 19-inch wheels. The gray Sonata has a more conservative chrome grille and 18-inch wheels, which match its entry-level aspirations. Biermann hints that there will definitely be something sportier on the way.
Inside, Hyundai’s most significant accomplishment is stuffing a comfortable and accessible rear seating compartment into the 2020 Sonata’s sleek silhouette. Your humble scribe stands nearly six feet tall, yet could sit comfortable behind the driver’s seat (set for someone his height), with good knee room and thigh support (to mid femur), and acceptable headroom (hair just grazing the headliner.)
Front seat occupants are treated to horizontally oriented displays and air conditioning vents. Control surfaces have been updated according to purpose; knobs and touch controls for the infotainment screen and toggle switches for easy adjustment of the climate control system. Options include quilted leather seating surfaces and a 12.3-inch digital screen that spans the instrument cluster. Standard across the Sonata line is the deletion of the transmission lever in favor of PRND transmission buttons similar to what we’ve seen in recent Hondas and Acuras. Next to this button array is small deck designed to hold and wirelessly charge the latest mobile phones.
Smartphone integration and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) were top priorities, which is why the 2020 Sonata comes with an entire alphabet soup of upgraded safety, security, and driver convenience electronics. One of the most interesting is the ability to use your smartphone as a digital key to gain entry to and drive the 2020 Sonata. This option works via the Near Field Communication (NFC) standard that comes standard with nearly all current smartphones. For Sonata, a user must have Hyundai’s app downloaded to a smartphone and sync’d with the vehicle. Then, all a driver needs to do is touch the phone to the Sonata’s door handle to gain access. Laying the phone on charging mat allows the car to be started and driven. Really handy is that permissions can be remotely granted to others interested in accessing the vehicle. Hyundai claims it will be possible to give permanent digital key access to up to three different smartphones. Digital keys can also be granted on a temporary, timebound basis or restricted to just parts of the car, such as the trunk for delivery of goods.
So the 2020 Sonata is definitely sexy and stuffed with high tech goodies. But is it enough? Hyundai’s own research confirms that the midsize family sedan market is shrinking fast; the segment hit a high in 2013 with sales of 2.4 million, but is quickly losing steam. Hyundai has a projection showing sales could hit only 1 million units in 2023.
SangYup Lee and his team know the argument well. “We all know this market segment is shrinking,” said Lee. “But the sedan will never die; we know this. So we asked a question: Can we make this one right, to make a statement? Hyundai makes the value car, but this is not enough for the future of Hyundai. Design is the key enabler that will take Hyundai to the next level.”

Design and Construction
As mentioned above, the design of the RF7 is the same as the PF7. It’s a something like a classic split five-spoke design, but with a modern mesh design. The design can flow well on nearly any supercar or sports car. The lightweight design improves acceleration, handling, and braking by reducing rotational mass and unsprung weight. It might not be as strong as a fully forged wheel, but it’s more than strong enough for street use and even track use depending on the application.

New Audi RS7 receives redesign and 591bhp V8 Audi Sport has unveiled the 591bhp second-generation RS7 Sportback, with a series of upgrades designed to make it a true ‘Gran Turismo’ atop the ever-expanding RS range. The new machine, revealed at the Frankfurt motor show ahead of going on sale early in 2020, is based on the A7 Sportback, and serves as a sister model to the recently revealed RS6 Avant. It uses the same powertrain as that model, with a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 fitted with a 48V mild hybrid unit to produce 591bhp and 590lb ft. That results in a 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155mph, or 189mph with the optional Dynamic Plus pack. The RS7 has been given a major makeover from the A7, with the the bonnet, front doors and boot lid the only body panels remaining unchanged. At 1951mm wide, it is 40mm than the A7. Exterior designer Francesco D’Amore told Autocar that the extra width “allowed us to show the prestige in the car.” It features a redesigned gloss black Audi Sport single frame honeycomb grille at the front, along with enlarged air vents inspired by those on the R8 supercar - both to make the styling more aggressive and because the engine requires extra cooling. The rear of the car features an RS-specific bumper featuring an enlarged diffuser and surrounded by large oval chrome exhausts, which D’Amore said are the largest ever featured on an Audi Sport model.
