Strade with an autistic mc?

One of my characters has low functioning autism. She’s really sensitive to bright, noisy light and cold air. (It could trigger a meltdown). Her special interests are stuffed animals, especially if they’re big and cuddly, and apple slices.

She’s not really great at verbal communication especially when she scared or nervous. She’s good at physical communication tho? Expressions?

Also she’s part tanuki soooo do whatever you want with that.

but like. providing that you survived the first night (cus they might not be able to stop themselves from just watching you wilt)

they'd be reasonably patient and gentle with you

i mean there's like no prolonged eye contact between you

but you'd communicate remarkably well (with what little you did actually talk)

they know how it feels to be misunderstood after all...and you're so delicate and need to be cared for

they wouldn't. totally understand your special interests (cus they like bones and taxidermy and roadkill) but they wouldn't be able to stop themselves from buying a few soft toys

you just look so sweet and comfortable when they leave you for work, why would they deprive you of that?

they might panic if you started having a meltdown, but they'd eventually clue in and. get you settled down (give them a break, they have meltdowns too)

and like. autism 4 autism...you know there's some sadomasochism happening. good for you! good for you...

it would kind of be on ren to make adjustments (changing lights, reminding him about your sensitivities) and like. maybe then he'd pay attention to some shit

he's better with your special interests and sensory needs tbh. he might even think it's kind of cute that you infodump when you're excited or curl up with blankets and soft toys

that doesn't mean he's not gonna fuck with you though lol.

um hi so I drew jeremy

and as I was drawing I was brainstorming so much lore

so basically, here a thing i came up with for Jeremy and how it pertains to my au I have with infected and unpleasant

Okay so basically... I had the idea of Jeremy coming from a video game, similar to how Infected and Unpleasant are technically now game characters in Roblox. He's from an old arcade game, a save the princess type of story, I'm thinkin. And Jeremy was the hero you played as that saved the princess! However, after years of being around, Jeremy's game soon fell out of style, since Arcade games were as well. The company that made him kinda forgot about him and left him to rot while they made other games.

Which is what caused Jeremy to go rogue. See, he didn't want to just be forgotten, instead, he made sure he was gonna thrive, with or without that damn video game. He wanted revenge. So, he escaped. He materialized into the real world, and was gonna make it everyone else's problem. Pissed off and angry that he wasn't popular anymore, he stormed off and killed anyone who tried to wrong him. See, Infected cant be outside of his computer for very long, and the same goes for Jeremy. The longer he remained outside of his game, the more he bugged out he got and the more he lost control of himself.

He convinced himself that he was still the hero of the story. He had to be. He was only doing what was right by killing the people who deserved it. Jeremy is the hero, dammit, he's the one who's gonna save the fucking day.

But with a mind so clouded in revenge and hatred, and a bug infesting his coding, there was no sign of the hero Jeremy used to be.

I really want to incorporate unpleasant and Jeremy being exes as well, but with how my lore is set up, it would be a little difficult... I'll figure something out, I promise!!!! I already have kind of an idea and if I ever get it fully sorted out, I'll be sure to share

I got thinking that the most honest and raw details about Ed and Stede's past are revealed in Stede's fever-dream and Badminton hallucination and Ed's coma, when they're confronted by their own subconsciousnesseseses (too many esesesss didn't know when to stop).

I had a pick over some of Ed's dialogue from the Gravy Basket the other day, which was barely even scraping the surface, including his expectation of violence when he's vulnerable, anticipation of hurt/cruelty in a domestic sphere and from a caretaker, desperate need for validation and approval and more.

While rewatching episode 1-4 today, it hit me how much Stede's demonstrate his belief that:

he was and remains nothing more than a disappointment to everyone around him, fit for scorn and derision (covering the parent, spouse and child for his fever dream)

no one would care if he was hurt ("Yeah, congrats")

he was insufficient ("you are such a disappointment")

he was a coward/weak ("He was scared of geese, for god's sake," say the man who shows up holding the goose he forced his son to watch him kill)

his choices, thoughts and fears would be laughed at (All of the above + Nigel)

no one cares about his physical well-being (Standing over him, taunting and laughing while he's in pain)

he was a terrible father by choosing to leave ("They'll never see papa again")

his children would hate him and wouldn't care if he was dead ("scoundrels spare no one")

Messy, emotionally-repressive autistic lad hasn't had anywhere to let out his distress for a long time, because he's never felt safe to do it. Mary says she knew he was unhappy and thought she heard him crying alone and, in a flat monotone, he denied it and said the crying was the wind.

He was conditioned to believe anything he said would be shot down. He wasn't allowed to express opinions and thoughts and his father made damn sure if he did have any, they were scoffed at and ridiculed, whether it was Stede's belief he was fortunate to have comfort and wealth or derision about his belief that he could marry for love. Mary's anger at his ship plan comes in there too, even if her reaction is warranted - he still sees a rejection of him, his ideas and the things he cares about.

It says it all that the only time he really does lose his temper in S1 (not including the meltdowns over things not going to plan) is when Jack is deliberately smashing all his buttons, treating him like his peers and dad used to and then, to rub it in extra hard, pissing on his shoes.

Stede tried to do what he normally did in stressful situations: he was going to go back to the ship so no one would see anything, because Conceal Don't Feel is that man's watchword. He bottles so finely he has an entire wine cellar of Trauma.

Ed catches him before he can leave and Stede's all out of control of his emotions and lets opinions fly and next thing he knows, Karl is dead, the crew are upset and Ed is leaving with Jack. So he learns Do Not Show The Emotions Again and boy, how that spectacularly backfires.

And on that note, watching S2, ohhhhhh there's an eruption coming at some point. He has been pushing it all down, shaking the bottles and stacking them. We've had his flashbacks again. We've had him kill for the first time. We've had him almost lose the love of his life multiple times. He's not dealt with any of that and a storm is a-coming now there's nothing to distract him from it.

Also, in case there's any doubts that his trauma isn't lurking to sneak back up and bite him, look at the man he chose to spend time with after Ed left him when he did something regarded as "man's work": an older man in a bloody leather apron just like his father in the flashbacks.

"You like me for me," he says to that guy, the one who has been reassuring him and validating him and telling him how good and worthwhile he is all day.

You may have asked someone to prove you wrong but I shall do the opposite and prove you right because I’ve written 5 essays on autism and consumed soooo much academic and non academic information on it.

Anyways let’s start out with the most obvious

Chase

So while it may be one of his bionic abilities I’d definitely count his super senses. He can hear more things than normal which is common in autistic people. And he can get super overwhelmed by it (think him screaming at the first school bell)

He stims. Like his “I did it! I did it!” and dancey dancey when he saved Adam. (I think he does this other times when he succeeds as well)

Often folds his arms. Could be a storm but also autistic people often don’t know what to do with their arms. Crossed arms, hands in pockets and raptor arms are common things to do.

Any nerd/smart character is often very autistic coded. He has an advanced vocabulary and that’s make him not understood. He likes to infodump even though people are often uninterested or don’t understand. He got so excited and stimmy for the sci fi con thing (Bree said he’d been excitedly saying just a few more minute for “hours”).

Not understanding things frustrates him (like the superhero’s)

Chase has emotional outbursts. Think him smashing his computer for being a useless hunk of junk.

Leo

Leo is a nerd. He wears graphic tees that he finds entertaining even if other people don’t like them.

He’s unpopular at school, and gets picked on.

He’s very stubborn.

Big emotional outbursts when annoyed.

I could totally see Markus being autistic intuition. Some autistic people just know when someone’s untrustworthy without being able to explain why.

He was pretty literal with the night shirt vs night gown convo. Like they’re different things and he won’t stand to hear they’re not.

He’s brutally honest. Like he says what he wants and does not consider the consequences or how it makes people feel.

But also insists on the importance of manners even in situations where they should be forgone.

On multiple occasions he’s said things in different ways like unintentionally rhyming or in a rhythmic or musical way.

Adam

He notices things but doesn’t realize they’re relevant till people point them out like the off button in the recycling plant.

He does not recognize what is appropriate for the situation. He does the goofiest stuff during serious moments. He forgets manners most of the time but suddenly remembers to use them when talking to an enemy.

Has an alternative form of affection instead of expressing it normally (playful bullying)

Protective of his family. Very loyal.

Bree

Obsessed with being a normal teen girl and thinks it’s like TV. She tries to follow it like rules. She needs to get best friends and then she has to back stab them.

She researched for her sleepover

Also the desire to be normal in general is really relatable to a lot of nuerodivergent people.

ADHD and autism are often comorbed, and she literally operates on a faster speed than everyone like her attention switches so fast.

She gets really caught up in relationships. AuDHD people can hyperfixate on people. While some autistic people can be specially tuned to intentions like Leo others can be easier to manipulate like Bree because theyre blind to intentions and pay attention to what the person is directly saying to them.

Davenport

He admittedly didn’t have a lot of friends growing up.

He was very emotionally attached to his action figures and gets emotionally attached to other material objects.

Still really enjoys stuff from childhood like video games and action figures

He’s super smart. He’s created a whole bunch of advanced tech.

He needs a specific environment to work on things though. He got really annoyed by quiet sounds like Leo’s breathing and prefers to work alone. He needs to be get in the zone and can tend to ignore people when in it.

He gets really annoyed when people touch his stuff. Big emotional outbursts.

Can be kind of oblivious of how people might feel about what he says, and does. Like he was super proud of the Lab Rats when Tasha and Leo found them and confused when she wasn’t supportive of how he raised them and upset that they existed without her knowledge.

My playing of mk11 isn’t just frustrations though. Like, even talking strictly about rewards

I got both Jade’s and Skarlet’s klassic masks as random rewards, even though they are supposed to be only race against time/premium shop stuff. Also, unless I got the names translations completely wrong or my spreadsheet has some issue, I seem to have gotten two character tower items as random rewards. The brutalities and taunts come all the time but those were a skin and a gear, one for Fujin and other for Kano

Today I played as Frost for the first time in a while - I stopped doing so when I got stuck with her random rewards, and I had forgotten how fun it is. She is so fast. I love her so much

(I got to buy a Eternal Klash pack for her! I love her ninja costume so much and I actually managed to find it at the premium shop! A lot of the premium shop stuff is lovely but this may be my favorite thing from there and I managed to get it)

Also I am working on Sonya’s character tower now. I am still not sure if I will do them all by hand or by ai, but I plan on doing this one by hand

I was super happy to defeat Kronika as Kitana recently. I was almost giving up and using ai, but I was getting so close at times that I decided to keep trying and it did work. Not bad for a button smasher huh

I am also managing to clear the first tower of the lucky towers on the first try. Yeah, it’s as Sheeva and it’s using a cheap trick, but those modifiers are ridiculous and a win is a win

The meteor towers are not giving me the ones I want the most but I did get three skins for three characters from that D’vorah themed season, which I did mention in that post. That’s a win

I have enough konsumables to get me through all the towers I still need to beat, or at least it seems so. I worry because I am a worrier but I never got near to running out. I also have been getting some high level augments as random rewards which will be useful. Got some elixir from the lucky towers that I only tried to use this week and it’s as op as I thought it would be

(I wish they let me use those to summon a character more often. Let me pretend I am playing mk1 lol)

Doing the soul thurible tower all those times means I got a lot of lucky keys. It doesn’t seem like a good idea to do the lucky towers just now, I am getting a lot of brutalities and taunts which come super easily from regular towers, but they may come in handy when I start getting stuck with more characters

I have more than the max of coins the game can display. It seems it manages to keep track of how many, just fails to display. It wasn’t so hard but it means that I can spend them without worrying

It is frustrating that it doesn’t get much easier even after coming this far, it feels like it got harder instead. With the whole krypt being useless at this point and most towers not having any new specific rewards. I really wish having lots of in-game currency could buy what’s missing. But I still enjoy how far I have come in playing, I used to be unable to beat a single ai enemy not long ago. And I love looking at all the different looks the characters can have - I wouldn’t be going crazy to collect all the skins and gear if I didn’t enjoy them. Damn, I wish random enemies in klassic towers could use special skins - the kl ones, the dlc ones, etc. I never checked if they can, but never saw them using them. I would love to see those skins on my enemies too

(Considering it seems unlikely my family will play 2p versus with me at any point *sighs* I feel like whenever I get too intense about a special interest, I push everyone away from it. But anyway, I am not touching towers of time after I am done with rewards, race against time included. I will move to klassic towers or 1p vs to play for fun and play dress up. I wish my ai opponents used all the different itens i unlocked)

The day is beautiful. Kevin R. Free. My longtime companion. Has finally, finally learned how to pronounce “holo” correctly. I hit the “go back 15 seconds” button like 5 times to make sure I heard correctly, but “hole-oh” is no more - “hall-oh” reigns supreme. give him a hand folks!!!

when mb goes up to Tellus like “you don’t have to pretend to be human around me” fuck man the allegory. lately I found out my cousin was autistic and I felt a similar emotion of “thank god, I don’t have to pretend to be neurotypical around you”

I love that when restricted to not hacking, mb’s strategy is to just go up to bots and politely ask them things. and it works!

I don’t know if I’ll ever be over the moment when JollyBaby smashes Balin and all the bots in the area are gathered around looking at it like “we know what you are, and we know what you did.” 


its just such a powerful show of solidarity that I don’t think mb has ever experienced and shows that the bots of the station have social links same as humans and idk it just fuckin gets to me

I didn't even see who'd reblogged this or your tags before I smashed the "Robot (Cloth Doll)" button, so uh, I may be in your target audience either way, lol.

This also seems like a good time to mention that I got into crochet last year after reading a bunch of fanfic about Murderbot getting blankets and soft clothing. (I personally have An Autistic Thing with certain cloth textures, so learning how to make comfortable clothing for myself is a very fun - if slow - process.) I'm not skilled enough to make anything TMBD themed yet, but I made my first amigurimi project the other day, so maybe sometime in the near future!

Cerians don't generally do birthdays as a culture because being scattered across the galaxy and fucking around with spacetime makes relative time weird, even with standardized clocks. That's why Hat Kid is like "idk" when asked how old she is because while she does have an absolute age, she doesn't really know how to translate that into Earth context.

The ages I give for the hat aliens are more for real-life contextualization tbh, like that's their equivalent age in human development time. It's actually not a common personal info metric they exchange with each other because they have to literally look it up in the standardized time keeping system. They would have other ways of establishing social status and seniority but that's not a can of worms I've opened yet.

That all being said, I think the Subcon Birthday festival from ch 16 takes place sometime in the fall, probably September, so that's around when her Earth bday would be.

Tevane and Lemel's Earth birthdays would be 2/16 and 10/31 respectively. Yes Halloween.

Do they have Halloween in ahit world? Probably not exactly, but there would be some kind of fall festival equivalent that varies across cultures.

Lemel's family life back home involved a lot of extended family gatherings including numerous people who aren't blood related who nevertheless are still family. They had big noisy parties with an obscene amount of food and Lemel looks back on that fondly.

At the same time, they like bonds they can count on. They like feeling understood, so while big get-togethers are fun, they are really only vulnerable with a select few people who have earned the intimacy of trust.

Tevane's family was very much more the nuclear style with all it's trappings. Putting up a good image was highly valued, and he and his brother both received pressure from their parents to varying degrees to maintain that. As the older child, far more of this fell onto Tevane and his brother developed an entitled, spoiled personality when he realized he could deflect a lot of accountability onto Tev. Any sort of nurturing or intimacy was practically nonexistent.

They're both written with different sorts of neurodivergency in mind, but Tevane specifically is autistic and gets kindly gifted a lot of my personal particularities but Worse This Time. Lemel is more vague because I project less onto them but I did draw from friends with ADHD.

Tevane thinks Lemel is really good at giving him gifts that he likes, though Lemel is convinced it's because he's so enthralled about getting anything at all that any of the random crap they gift him is exciting. It's one of the ways he's unexpectedly sentimental because even if he doesn't necessarily like the object itself, the giftness of it matters a lot.

Lemel doesn't really care about getting items as gifts on the other hand, making them difficult to get stuff for unless you know they want a Specific Screwdriver or something. They prefer experiences and quality time, and enjoy things like aquarium dates, concerts, going to fairs and theme parks, road trips, etc.

Lemel eventually takes up boxing/martial arts as a way to channel their energy. Remember that Cerians are wicked strong and have high bone density.

Lemel enjoys video games but doesn't have the patience for an extended plot nor the hand stamina for intense button mashing. They like things like shooters and Smash Bros and such, but can't play for long. They usually just watch Tev play things while leaning on his shoulder and being a pest about it. He prefers strategy and puzzle games but will play things they suggest for them. He's more likely to finish games than they are by a long shot.
