Silo The Harmonium Review: Class Struggles and Power Dynamics
TL;DR – Today, we hit the point of no return. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.5 out of 5. Disclosure – I paid for the Apple TV+ service that viewed this series. Silo Review – Fundamentally, what works so well about Silo is that even though it is a post-apocalyptic sort of sci-fi story about people living in a heavily class-stratified society under a quasi-fascist government with a veneer of democracy to…

When The Light Feels Far
Siddiq sat alone in the quiet of the church, the low hum of the wind outside barely reaching the walls. His hands were clasped tightly in front of him, but his eyes wandered— out the broken windows, over the abandoned streets of Alexandria, and deep into a past that was impossible to forget. The air was thick with memories.
He hadn’t been here long, and yet it already felt like a lifetime. Weeks ago, Siddiq had been on the front lines of a world in turmoil, but the reality of his new life was just as brutal. Even though it was nothing compared to what these people had been dealing with. Here, there were no walkers crashing through the gates, no endless days spent running for survival. But there was still a war to fight— one that raged against Saviors.
The boy who had saved him was dead. The father and Alexandrian leader despised him. He could’ve— would’ve— lived without Carl’s help, but for how long?
Since he'd returned from the wilderness, to community, Siddiq had done his best to rebuild his sense of purpose. He was a doctor. A medical student, but, close enough. His role in the community was essential, and yet, it didn't pierce the bubble that was this group.
He remembered the faces— the ones he'd lost. Friends, at first. Strangers. The people he and his parents had tried to survive with. The ones he couldn't save. His mother, his father, and, most haunting of all, Carl. Carl’s smile still felt close, like a shadow in the corner of his vision. The boy’s perseverance and honor echoed in those left behind in Alexandria, in Hilltop, in the Kingdom. Rick, Daryl, Michonne, Maggie, Rosi—
Rosita was one of the only people who looked at him like he was a contribution. That he wasn’t a worthless piece of shit.
The day Carl died had been a turning point, a line drawn in the sand between who he was before the world ended, and who he had to become. Stronger. This is a second chance.
But the world was broken. And Siddiq had learned, the hard way, that no matter how many lives you saved, the world had a way of balancing the scales.
He stood and moved to the window, looking out toward the cemetery where the gravestones of his people’s friends stood. Maggie’s husband Glenn, and the man who’d died with him, Abraham. The past leader Deana. Carl, and countless others in the whispers. He had seen people die for reasons that made no sense. This was still his first war.
"Hey, Siddiq." You say, broom in hand.
The voice broke through the fog of his thoughts. He turned slowly to see you of all people standing in the doorway, eyes tired but warm.
"I didn't mean to interrupt," you tell him softly, stepping inside and closing the door behind you. "Just wanted to see how you were doing. Gabriel told me you came in here. I, uh, needed to clean up anyways.”
Siddiq exhales, a long, slow breath. He leans back against the itchy wooden wall, beside the window. His gaze falls to the debris covered floor. "I'm as good as anyone else is right now.” The words felt like they were hallowing out his mouth as he said them. Like dust in the wind.
You give him a knowing look. "I know it’s not easy, but you don’t have to carry it all by yourself. What happened to Ca— it wasn’t your fault. He got bit. We’re all gonna have to go at some point.”
"I don’t know how to stop carrying it," Siddiq mutters red, his voice heavy. "It’s like...it’s like the weight just keeps growing. The more I try to put it down, the heavier it gets. Kid would’ve lived longer if I ran off. Rick tried to scare me off the first time we ‘met’ but Carl found me again. I wanted a community.”
You step closer, your presence grounding him in a way nothing else could. Nobody else in Alexandria could except for Carl had he still been here. “You can’t mend this. All you can do is take the second chance. You’ll be saving lives. You’ve already saved quite a few, so far. The war’ll bring on casualties even if you’re helping to treat them.”
He looked up at her, meeting her gaze for the first time since she entered. "I’m not sure that’s enough anymore. Helping people— they’re gonna die, either in the next fight or on a simple run if they get bit. Postponing the inevitable.”
"It is," you say firmly, a quiet strength in your words. You’d seen friends turn against each other. The wars. Herds. The line-up. “Not every battle is won in one day. But you’re here, and you’re doing your best. That’s what matters. You’re of value, you know. Not everyone has to like you. I don’t like everyone.”
Siddiq nods, his throat tight with emotion. It wasn’t just Carl he mourned. It was everything— the collapse of the whole world, the seemingly fallen dream of rebuilding something better. He was barely apart of that dream. Now, even the smallest spark of hope seemed distant.
She was right. Maybe, just maybe, the hope didn’t have to be a grand thing. Maybe it could be as simple as holding on. As simple as waking up tomorrow and doing the work, even when it felt impossible.
"I don’t know how to move forward," Siddiq admitted, the words slipping out before he could stop them.
"You don’t have to know right now," she replied gently. "You just have to keep going. One step at a time."
He met her eyes again, feeling something in him shift, something like acceptance. Maybe he couldn’t save the world. Maybe he couldn’t fix the broken parts of himself. He could keep going. That, for now, had to be enough.
The silence between them stretched for a moment before she broke it. "Come on," you whisper. "Help me clean? You don't have to be alone in this. We don’t even have to talk.”
Siddiq hesitated for a moment, but then he nodded. He wasn’t alone, not really. Not anymore. He jokes, “You just wanna get out of house keeping duties and go get a beer.”
He turned away from the window, picking a dust pan from the floor. The weight of the past still there, but a little lighter for the first time in a long while. “Fuck it. Let’s get ‘er done.”
You smile. “I think I like church. Oh, Rosita was looking for you. She went off with Gabriel when I came to find you.”
