Ayu – “While gal culture takes a variety of forms, I'm affiliated with the Ganguro genre, an original Japanese culture which isn’t just about style and beauty but a way of life.

Whilst some Gyaru’s came and went with the fashion wave a while ago, Gyaru’s still exist and continue against the fashion trends and have strong policies and mind-sets.

I knew about the Ganguro since the beginning, I wrote to their blogs, those Ganguro’s I met were my entry-point to the culture, it's liberating to connect with like-minded people and we all became fast friends.

I've been part of this community for fourteen years. Some people have really taken to the Ganguro aesthetic, they'll see us on the street and rush over in amazement.

The whole package is key but the most important is having dark skin, there is the showy makeup, hairdos, and nails.

If you don't show skin, you're not a gal, Japanese people like tanned skin, it’s unusual. Our style wouldn’t be able to continue if we cared about how others thought of us all the time.

‘You only live once’ - there is quite a bit of this kind of mind-set in Gyaru’s – this idea that you only have one life, so you have to ‘seize the moment’ and enjoy it to the full without worrying about how you look to others.

I just want to stay true to myself. However we're a minority and we are misunderstood by society. We are used to people hurling abuse and even garbage at us.

I guess you could say we all have great skill for just not caring about those kinds of things. It's as though we're treated as sub-human, even though we have hearts, some people really think we're strange.

People judge by appearances and those who want to spend time with the real me don't care about that.

My boyfriend is a normal guy, so there have been problems. He doesn't mind introducing me to his seniors, but some people might think he's an odd-ball but he's dating me for the person I am inside.

Thanks to the internet, there are girls all over the world who admire Gyaru fashion. I would be thrilled if someone told me that meeting me has changed the way they appreciate our culture.”

Hari ini tgl 3 maret 2019. 2 tahun yang lalu, aku baru pulang dari Amplaz sama mama dan ayuyun. (Dua tahun yang lalu,papa lagi sibuk ngurus thesis di malaysia dan tinggallah aku bertiga cuma sm mama dan ayuyun.) Malem tgl 3 dua tahun yang lalu aku minta mama belikan sesuatu dan mama gak kasih. Malem itu aku liat muka mama agak pucat, kaya capeeeee bgt. Tiap liat muka mama aku degdegan tp gatau kenapa dan aku gaberusaha nanya karna gengsi ud seminggu mama marah2 mulu :') maaa aku tau kok mama malam itu ga enak badan dan capek.. Dua taun yang lalu, malam kita jalan2 terakhir ke mall.. Mama mampir ke salah satu toko tas dan sepatu, sebut saja everbest hm mama liat tas yg dari 2 minggu lalu dia liatin terus. Tasny bagus sih tp wkt itu harganya kurang bagus apalagi buat kantong mahasiswa kaya aku. Malem itu aku bilang sm ayuyun "yun mama drkmrn pgn tas itu.. Tp ga dibeli2 mgkn dia kode kita buat belikan, bentar lg kan dia ulangtahun" Dan aku blg ke mama "ma, mama mau tas itu? Kenapa mama ga beli? Mama mau dikasih jd kado ya haha" dan mama cuma menjawab "beli ga ya.... " (mgkn mama ud kerasa, kl toh beli ga bs dia pake lama lama :'( ) Tgl 3 maret dua tahun yang lalu, *aku dan ayuyun ga tau kalau seminggu lagi kami akan kehilangan mama.. * andai aku tau ma... Aku ga akan marah2 sm mama, aku akan belikan mama kado tas seminggu lebih cepat dr ulangtaun mama, aku akan menikmati jalan2 di mall terakhir sama mama, aku akan banyak peluk mama sampe mama sesek :( Aku benci nih ma kl udah maret, aku masih hapal betul 10 hari terakhir mama... Aku pengen ulangin ma... Aku pengen kita semua samasama... Aku pgn mama gausah capek2...aku pgn gampar temen2 mama didepan muka mama biar mama gausah pusing gregetan mikirin mereka yg jahatin mama... Aku pgn anter mama ke purworejo nemuin embah bukan buat anter mama ke peristirahatan terakhir... Aku pgn cerita banyaakkk.. Dan tentunya aku pgn tanya banyak hal sama mama kenapa mama bilang a kenapa mama bilang b sebelum aku keperosot beneran kaya skg... Mama aku minta maaf... Buat semuanya... Let me remember your last 7 days 2years ago ya ma.. Aku tau aku gakan ga nangis.. Rasanya masih kaya kemarin... Mama aku kangen sekali sama mama.. Plis mama baikbaik disana, maafin aku.. Maafin..
