Emmy's letter to Professor Layton, post-Curious Village. The fabled letter, which can only be accessed properly if you rip open your copy of the Japan-exclusive Azran Legacy Guidebook (more or less).

Years ago, there were photos and a fan-translation floating around on tumblr. Now, I give you the new and high quality version, as well as a full transcript. You're welcome :>

It's been literally eight years since your post, but since your tags say that you wanted to be warned if a better scan were to be made, well... Here you go @puzzilitis x) I'm also tagging @the-azran-legacies, but I'm pretty sure your blog is completely dead since this translation post seems to be its latest sign of activity, and that was ten years ago.

Seriously though, just in case you get to see this -- thank you both so much for what you did all these years ago. Without your posts, I might never even have heard that this letter existed in the first place! Or, well, I likely would have heard of it by now given the fact that I've been documenting every single Layton media I can find -- but I would have lived through an entire decade of ignorance by that point.

The translation below has been done exclusively with DeepL because my free time is limited, sorry for that ^^' If you want another one in order to compare, you have the one linked above, and I will likely make another one later (much later).

親愛なるレイトン教授へ Dear Professor Layton,

あれから数か月になりますが、教授、お元気ですか？ It's been a few months since then. Professor, how are you?

一緒に仕事をしている仲間からレイトン教授が遺産相続騒動を解決したという話を耳にして思わず手紙を書いてしまいました。 When I heard from a colleague I work with that you had solved an inheritance dispute, I couldn't resist writing to you.

タージェントから世界を救ったあのレイトン教授が単なる遺産相続のナゾトキの依頼を引き受けるなんて。まさか…と思いましたが、ナゾには目がない教授ですし、きっと知的好奇心を刺激される不思議な出来事だったんでしょうね。 How could the very same Professor Layton who had saved the world from Targent, now accept a mere inheritance puzzle request? I could not believe it… But you always had a penchant for puzzles, so I am certain that it had to be a mysterious event which truly stimulated your intellectual curiosity.

ルークはしっかりと役目を果たせたでしょうか？ Has Luke fulfilled his role well?

村人たちの情報を頼りに鍾乳洞の奥を突き進んでいったら…幻の｢神秘の密林｣を発見しました！ After going deeper into the limestone caves, by relying on the information the villagers gave me… The fabled "Mystical Jungle" has been discovered!

ワールドタイムズの大スクープとして一面に大きく取り上げられたので教授もご存知かもしれませんが、これは私の初スクープなんですよ。 You may have already known of it since it was featured as huge news on the front page of the World Times, but this was my first scoop.

記事には書きませんでしたが、密林の奥には古代遺跡が隠されていました。 We did not mention it in the article, but there were ancient ruins hidden deep in the jungle.

ここにもたくさんのナゾが隠されているはずなので、いつか教授にナゾを解いてもらいたいなぁ。 There must be a lot of puzzles hidden there. I hope you will solve them one day.

もしかして、アスラント文明とは別の考古学史上に残る大発見がある…かも？ Maybe there is another major discovery in the history of archaeology that is unrelated to the Azran civilisation… maybe?

そんなスクープを追いかけて世界中を飛び回る毎日ですが、いま追いかけているのは、スラム街に現れた｢ナゾのマスク男｣です。この話、知的好奇心をくすぐられませんか？ I spend my days travelling around the world, chasing this kind of scoop. What I am chasing now is a "Puzzling Masked Man" who has appeared in the slum quarters. Doesn't this story tickle your intellectual curiosity?

お金持ちから金品を盗み、スラム街の子供たちにお金を与える現代の義賊｢マスク男｣。 The Masked Man is a modern-day righteous bandit who steals money and goods from the rich and gives it to the children in the slums.

最初は、この｢マスク男の正体｣をスクープするためカメラ片手に追いかけていましたが、スラム街の子供たちを見ているうちに、１人の記者としてそこに暮らす人々の現状もじっくりと取材したい、と思うようになりました。 At first, I followed this "Masked Man," camera in hand, in order to get a scoop on his identity. But as I watched the children in the slums, I began to think that, as a reporter, I should rather take the time to cover the current situation of the people living there.

スラム街にはたくさんの孤児がいます。私たちを無垢な笑顔で迎えてくれる子、まったく目を合わせてくれ��い子など、いろんな表情を見せてくれます。 There are many orphans in the slums. We see many different faces, from those who greet us with innocent smiles to those who don't make eye contact at all.

そんな彼らの姿を見ているうちに、昔のことを、ふと思い出してしまいました。 As I watched them, I suddenly remembered something from the past.

私も子供のころ父を失い、孤児になってしまうところでした。しかし、それを救ってくれたのは、おじさまだったんです。 I lost my father as a child and almost became an orphan. But Uncle Leon saved me from that.

あの頃、父を失った私をおじさまはまるで娘のように育ててくれました。 Back then, I had lost my father, and Uncle Leon brought me up as if I were his daughter.

だから、あの場所でおじさまを裏切るわけにはいかなかった。優しかったおじさまを裏切れなかった…。教授に嘘をついていたことは、申し訳ないと思っています。 So this is why I couldn't betray him in that place. I couldn't betray my kind Uncle Leon... I truly am sorry that I lied to you, Professor.

でも、こういうことがあったからこそ、教授に出会えた。人の運命って不思議ですね。 Still, it was because of these things that I met you. The destiny of people is a curious thing, isnt' it?

あ…、今の私を伝えたいと思ってこの手紙を書いたのに、過去の話になっちゃいましたね。私の話は、また教授に会ったときにお話ししますね。 Ah... I wrote this letter in order to tell you how I am now, but all this is about the past. I will tell you my story when we meet again.

というわけで…今は楽しく仕事をしています！ So, all that to say... I really am enjoying my work now!

これまでタージェントの一員として生きてきましたが、いま、ワールドタイムズでカメラマンとして働く普通の女性として歩み出すことができた、そんな気がしています。 I have lived my entire life as a member of Targent. But now, I feel that I have been able to step forward as an ordinary woman, who is now working as a photographer for the World Times.

Important translation note: Emmy calls Bronev "oji-sama," all in hiragana, which makes it unclear whether she is related to him by blood or not (おじ means "uncle," but can also just mean "man who is older than the speaker" (at least from what I know)).

The Eternal Diva novel introduces Emmy as "a beautiful woman of Asian lineage" (and yes, I know, Asia is huge with a lot of different lineages, and I don't know either which corner of Asia is being talked about here), so make of that info what you like. In order to leave it as ambiguous as I could, I replaced all instances of "oji-sama" with "Uncle Leon."

There might be a few other translation changes I made, but I think this was the most important one to take note of.

By the way, I actually scanned the whole guidebook, and I will share it when I can (though don't hold your breath, as you probably know I am currently juggling between way too many projects). The scans aren't ready to be shared yet because they were basically done with me not really caring whether the pages would be perfectly straight, upside down, etc, and as such they need some editing.

(I checked and the resolution of the scans is high enough to make it so that editing doesn't hurt the quality in the slightest. I swear that when the scans are finished editing, you won't even realise it and they'll look just as good as what you're seeing above with Emmy's letter).

The editing also includes linking the pages together for aesthetics purposes. Some pages have artworks that spread over both pages, so I'm doing my best to make it look seamless! Here, have an example for the first double page in the book that really does it:

As you can guess, editing each of the 128 pages in order to get this result is time-consuming, and translating that is going to be a doozy. But let's just appreciate how awesome it will be once it's done, eh? :D

Anyway, next up on the blog is going to be the Eternal Diva novel translation. I'm still working on getting some buffer done, but hopefully the first "chapter" will get out soon! I'd like to post on Saturdays. Let's cross our fingers for tomorrow. Or next week, if today's translation is enough to satiate you all for now!

Having existed for at least 1 million years prior to modern society, the Azran were a vast, world-wide civilization, and many of the mysteries surrounding this civilization remain unsolved. How and why did such an advanced civilization built by the Azran vanish so abruptly from the forefront of of history? The key to unlocking the proof of this civilization lies in the Azran ruins mentioned by Donald Rutledge in “Ancient Histories”. Namely, three sites known as the known as the “legacies”.

These three legacies are of importance, as they are thought to embody the values of the Azran Civilization. During his worldwide search for Azran ruins, Dr Rutledge found three reoccurring words amongst the artefacts: “healing”, “harmony” and “infinity”, and identified the three sites – the “legacies” – which were constructed to be embodiments of these three concepts. In addition to these “legacies”, exists a “sanctuary” which could be called the centre of Azran society, indicating that… (page cuts off).. these three… Azran Civilization…

III: The Scattered Ruins as Azran Systems

The excavated ruins show that the concepts of “healing” “harmony” and “infinity” were highly revered by the ancient Azran people. According to “Ancient Histories”, each of these concepts encapsulates the knowledge and technology of the Azran Civilization. “Healing” controls the life of living organisms, and “harmony” controls the environment in which they live. The third, “infinity”, though difficult to believe, involves a device that supposedly generates infinite amounts of energy. By use of these technologies, the Azran are said to have built a civilization unparalleled by any other in human history. My own fieldwork, appears to support this. We have found, for example, sluices and wind-controlling devices which may have served as systems to regulate the “harmony” of the surrounding environment.

IV: Purpose of the Eggs

In “Ancient Histories” there are several references to mysterious egg relics, found scattered amongst Azran ruins. Based on Dr Rutledge’s research, it may be that that these Eggs function somehow as a key to the Azran’s central sanctuary. …(cut off)… because of the attention on this relic, worldwide…

For example, Hoogland is famous for its belief in the dragonlord, the folklore of which has been the subject of much research. Interestingly, this village also has a tradition tied to “egg” relics, with a related shrine that contained a wind-control mechanism, believed to belong to the Azran.

In addition to being a famous tourist trap, San Grio… (cut off) … objects called “popoños”…

One of my favorite bits in AL is the Descole reveal purely because of his animation. His pupils disappear and I had to pause because I was laughing so hard I had an asthma attack.

Timeline stuff is killing me. The only canonical date in the series is Diabolical Box, taking place on the 12th of August, due to the fountain puzzle in the Dropstone town hall and the festival taking place whilst they're there. Katrielle's guidebook says that Curious Village was only a few days beforehand meaning Flora had been with them for all of 15 seconds before they bailed on her. (Also does it get cold enough for the Hertzen lake to freeze in August?)

If Azran Legacy happened not too long before (around June thru July I'm thinking due to Luke being out of school and them receiving Lady Dahlia's letter in the credits) then Hershel had one HELL of a year.

discord convo led to 6 hours of hyperfocus and research for me, so i'm gonna put my findings here for your resource as well!

as most of the resources concerning the japan-only azran legacy guidebook's azran "language" cipher (that used to be somewhere as a font back in the day?) and the fans' interpretation of what letters' solutions weren't included officially have disappeared off the face of the internet, i had the idea of reconstructing it, which brought me down the rabbithole of the INCREDIBLY inconsistent nature of the azran language throughout the professor layton prequels. even if that cipher is dubiously canon, some of its symbols appear as canon azran text in the games. i wanted to check overlap as well as log every existing example of characters in an azran writing system.

interestingly enough, some characters reappear across games- and there's lots and lots of them to account for. around 23 pages of this doc worth, actually!

this also led me to compile most of the visual imagery players see in azran spaces, as well as any azran seals shown in-game. i'm pretty sure i covered my bases, but if i'm missing anything, i can absolutely update this compilation!

It’s funny you brought this up, because I was actually wondering about the likelihood of this lately!

In my opinion, it just makes sense to have ports or rereleases of the prequels, for multiple reasons. There are probably players who don’t own a DS or 3DS and have only gotten to play the ones that have ports. It would also spread more awareness and interest in the series, helping to keep it relevant until NWoS comes out. But with a few additions, it could be well worth the time for returning fans as well.

For instance, Last Specter’s Nintendo WFC features, like the weekly puzzles, and some instances in London Life. These are inaccessible for many (myself included) due to the service being discontinued years ago. A rerelease could have these automatically available. And speaking of London Life, it’s in dire need of a rerelease, whether included with one of LS or even released separately as its own game! In addition to the WFC issues, LL was not included in some regions, and everyone should get a chance to play it. Adding a few more save slots would be great as well (speaking as someone with siblings). If it were released on its own, I think London Life would hit it off with cozy gamers and draw more awareness to the series.

Miracle Mask could be rereleased to include the Japan-exclusive features (bonus cutscenes, events, etc) from MM Plus. I can’t be the only one dying to know what the events are…

For Azran Legacy, include Emmy’s letter from the Japanese AL guidebook as an unlockable bonus feature! The letter adds important info and closure about Emmy’s arc, and should be more accessible than having to either tear up your book or find the scans/fan translations online.

These are just a few thoughts I have as to why this would be a worthwhile move for Level-5 and players alike.

If Level5 releases hd ports of the prequel trilogy would you guys be interested if that happened?

It's hard to tell if Level5 will ever release hd ports of the prequel trilogy as it's been awhile since they released the last hd port which was Unwound Future/Lost Future. The prequels aren't as popular as the original trilogy entries but they're still beloved among the fandom.

Hello! I really love azran legacy and I heard there was an artbook for it, can you tell me a bit about it please?

I believe you are talking about this book here, right? I really don’t know much about it, because I don’t have it but I’ll try to say a bit.

The most common Layton book to have is The World of Professor Layton, which is about all the Layton saga, and when it was first published, Azran Legacy was still a recent thing.  The Azran Legacy Official Guidebook (I believe that’s the official name) has two big differences with the other book: 1. It’s not available in English, only Japanese, and 2. it contains Azran Legacy spoilers.

From what I’ve seen, it not only contains scenery art, but also character art and facts. I believe also this is the book that contains Emmy’s letter to the professor, the letter she sends after Azran Legacy and explains what she’s doing after leaving Layton and Luke.

I found some links in case you want to see more pages of the book. This one from a selling page, and this one is from a tumbrl user that bought the book and took a lot of photos.

I'm pretty sure that nobody asked, but I shall answer nonetheless. To all fans who don’t own the book, you may have been a bit curious as to what I meant when I said that the only way to access the letter was to "rip apart" the guidebook. And if you look at the scan post's reblogs, there are a few happy owners of the guidebook who, despite having it in hand, never were able to look at the letter properly because they were too afraid of damaging their book.

Rightfully so. Very, very rightfully so.

Have a best-off of my reactions when I got to it:

Anyway as you know, I eventually succeeded well enough to give you all high-quality scans earlier today! (it just took me a long while to get the scans, transcript and translation done, that’s why the screenshots date back to May even though the scans were only done this week.)

I even got to do the same to the entire book and all of its 128 pages, in fact. As I mentioned in the last post, it's just that editing the scans is going to take a little while, and I'm not yet sure how the scans will be shared. Perhaps (because I don’t want to push it) I'll only share a fan-translated version—aka, the scans except the Japanese text was edited out and directly replaced with an English translation. We'll see.

...How is my guidebook doing now, you ask? Uhhhhh...

...fine. Good as new.

I am not that interested in collecting merch—not nearly as much as I am in getting digital preservation of the content and in making the lore accessible to the fandom. Sacrificing this book was for a good cause, and the bonus is that this makes it easier for me to read (the binding made me a bit frustrated due to how it sometimes made it a bit hard for me to appreciate fully the art that was too little too close to the middle of the double-page).

The reasons why the ED novel didn’t get the same treatment is because only a dozen pages out of the 200 are worth scanning, and I'm lazy. I wasn’t going to de-spine another book just for ten pages that were already present on my transcript web page haha.

A Sad Past?

Sycamore has lost loved ones in the past, it seems. Speaking of which, his personal background is unknown. Could his sorrow be the driving force behind his research into the Azran Civilization..?

Head of character design Takuzo Nagano discusses the origins of Sycamore’s design.

When I first drew Sycamore’s character sheet, it was still undecided what sort of character he would be. As a result, I drew him based on the sort of character I wanted to make. The character sheet above shows him expressing a range of emotions, but typically, it is difficult to discern his true feelings based on his expression.

Incidentally, his glasses are fake. The reality is that he has two ‘faces’: wearing his glasses, he becomes Sycamore, the archaeologist. For his other face, he wears something over it as well :) To perform either of his two faces, there are particular items that he needs. It’s like Layton and his top hat.

悲しい過去が? 愛する人を失った過去があるらしいサ ーハイマン。そういえば、彼の素性はあまり明らかにされていない。その悲しみがアスラント文明調査の原動力になっているのだろうか・・・

キャラテザイン担当長野拓造氏が語るサ ー ハイマン誕生秘話

サーハイマンの設定画を描いたときは、まだどんなキャラになるのか決まっていない状態でした。自分の中で、こういうキャラにしたいという願望で描いています。上の設定画では喜怒哀楽が出ていますが、普段は表情がわかりにくいサーハイマンの素顔です。

ちなみに彼のメガネは伊達メガネです。実は彼~には 2 つの顔があり、メカネをかけたときは、・考古学者サ ー 八イマン"になります。もうひとつの顔のときも、顔に何かつけてますよね(笑)。どちらも、彼が2つの顔を演じるために必要なアイテムなんです。レイトンの帽子みたいなものですね。

Professors Layton and Sycamore’s Lecture Course

Why is Professor Sycamore’s name so frequently mistaken?

On our trip, there were a lot of people who would get Professor Sycamore’s name wrong. Wondering why that was, I conducted my own investigation. If there is key characteristic to a researcher, it is that they can’t neglect when something is weighing on their mind. To begin, let us consider the mistakes that were made.

Each time they make the mistake, the professor will stop and correct them, so they surely know his correct name.

Investigation I: The Mistaken Name

Harald: A Froenborg resident (the things he calls Sycamore in Japanese): Salmon, sardine (a small type of pilchard), sirloin, sayori (stickleback), sasagarei (halibut). It seems he often mixes up the name with items of food. He also calls him suspenders and Summer-festival.

Mascha: A Froenborg resident This might be an example of her picking up her husband Harald’s error.

Amanita: A Phong-Gi resident Haamaisan, Maasaihan. Amanita often gets the syllables of his name the wrong way around.

Investigation II: The Cause

Morel, the Chief The first time that he heard the professor’s joke, he didn’t understand its meaning, then he said clearly that he was bored.

Lepidella, Morel’s husband She’s been worried about her husband, so she is grateful to the professor. She doesn’t say anything about the joke, though.

Sycamore’s Response

To get a well-rounded perspective, a second investigation was conducted to see if the cause lay on the professor’s side. Somehow, he also manages to misread the feelings of others. Harald and the others feel a sense of closeness and at ease with him. Perhaps the fact that they make mistakes is a sign of their trust towards him.

研究講座 ~なぜサ ー ハイマン博をは名前を間違われるか~

「そういえは名前を間違えてしまっている人は、��んな博士に対して好意的という点も似ているね」

今回の旅ではサ ー 八イマン博士の名前を間違う人があまりに多くてね。なんでだろうと私なりに検証してみることにした。気になることがあれば放っておけない人間がいるとしたら、それこそが研究者なのだからね。ますは間違われた結果から整理してみよう。

博士は間違われるたびに反論・訂正しているから、相手も博士の正しい名前は知っているはずだ。

検証 I: 違われた名前

ハラーケさん スノーラ在住 サーモン、サーディン(マイワシ類の小魚)、サーロイン、サヨリ、ササガレイ。食べ物名と間違うことが多いのかな。サスペンダー やサマーフェス工イバルもあったね。

ママンヌさん こちらは夫の八ラ ー ケさんの間違いをそのまま受け入れてしまった例かな。

ヒトヨさん ムスロッホ在住 八一マイサン、マ ー サイ八ン。ヒトヨさんは発音の順番を間違うことが多いようだ。

原因を探る

サーハイマン博士の行動人々の反応

ムスロッホ長老シメジイさん 博士のジョークを聞いた長老は、最初は意味がわからずに聞き返し、ニ度目は「シラケたわい」とはっきり口にしている。

シメジイさんのアミガサさん 夫のことで心痛があったせいか、奥さんは博士に感謝している。だがよく聞くとジョ ー クについては何も言っていない。

博士の対応 検証Ⅱは博士側にも原因がないかを多角的に探るために行ったものだよ。どうやら博士も相手の態度を読み違えることがあるようだね。ハラ ーケさんたちはそこに親近感を覚え、安心して気が緩むのだろう。間違うのは信頼の証なのかもしれない。

Examining the Bostonius

Landing Station The landing station besides the Thames river, London. Usually, the Bostonius is moored here. The building at the front is the tower that keeps the Bostonius anchored.

Hull/Exterior The hull of the ship is filled with helium gas, the buoyancy of which enables it to fly. The engine is directly attached to the hull, so it seems that the airship is rigid, with supports inside the exterior shell.

Cabin The main part of the ship. Immediately behind the cockpit is the reception room, behind that are the guest rooms, and on the second floor is Sycamore’s room (the captain’s room). Past the lower hull, at the rear are the engine room and cargo hold.

Tail Fin (Rudder) Used to steer the ship. There is no horizontal fin, which may enable higher cruising speeds. However, this requires a high level of piloting skill.

The Bostonius is the central hub for Layton and co. on their journey. This ship is a little different to others airships, and it’s secret will be revealed. Targent don’t know about it!

ボスドニアス号解剖

船体/外皮(工ンべロ ー プ) 船体をへリウムガスで満たし、ガスの浮力で飛行する。船体に直接工ンジンが取り付けられていることから、外皮内に支持構造を持つ硬式飛行船と思われる。

キャビン 本機の心臓部となる部分。操縦室のすぐ後ろには応接室、その後部には客室、 2 階にはサー八イマンの部屋(船長室)。船体下部から後部にかけては機関室と貨物室となっている。

尾翼(ラダー ) 船の舵取りを行う装置。水平尾翼がないのは高速航行を可能にするためだろうか。その反面、高い操縦技術が求められる。
