“Tender”

It was early in the morning, and immediately Rusl could hear the patter of little hands crawling across his floor. Getting out of bed, Rusl stretched, noticing his wife and son were not sleeping with him, the poor things. He didn’t think babies would take up so much sleep, and Uli was suffering the most from it. Yet she remained strong, and was already up and making breakfast for their little family.

Entering the main room, Rusl spotted Uli and Link both huddled near the pot, with Link watching Colin who was just barely learning to crawl. Colin noticed Rusl standing in the doorway, and his little face broke out into a smile, his legs kicking when his father walked up to him. Rusl stooped down and scooped up his baby boy into his arms, holding him up high and rubbing their noses together.

“Hello my sweet boy,” Rusl sang, Colin squealing and grinning, his chubby hands reaching for Rusl’s nose. The man laughed, holding his son close, his hands tenderly brushing against his round cheek. He couldn’t help but kiss him on the head.

They were such a blessed family.

yeahhh!! they’re childhood sweethearts they were together for like 8 years 🥹 john kind of homewrecked them lfjdkfhfk but it wasn’t a huge sting it was obvious for a while they’d become more like friends. it’s complicated with gale living there for so long and a bit bittersweet but they started out best friends so they don’t lose each other when they split although they lose contact for a little while. until ~

“Why else did you call me, darlin’?” Marge says, and she’s right, of course.

Gale needed a friend. His oldest friend, the friend who’s been there through everything, who never judged, nor ran- but this time it’s different. The enormity of who he’s become compared to the boy Marge knew is crushing him. He takes his head out of his hands, chest throbbing, eyelashes sticking together, and he looks at her. She’s just smiling. Sad, eyes shining, but waiting. Gale makes a desperate noise.

“I can’t,” he whispers, shaking his head again. “You’ll think of me different, Marge. You won’t be able to look at me.”

“Don’t you tell me what I’m unable to do, Gale Cleven,” she says. “I- I’m already lookin’ at you different. I don’t know what’s happened to you, but you ain’t like you used to be. But bits of people change, and bits stay the same. And I bet you still hold doors open for people, and say please and thank you, and pick dyin’ bees up off the sidewalk so they don’t get trodden on. I’m looking at you now. You look like you been through hell, Gale, but I’m still looking. Ain’t gonna stop looking.”
