Underrated JayVik moments/lines (17/∞)

So, "fun" story: When I first watched Arcane, while I had already seen approximately 10.000 gifsets of JayVik's final 5 minutes crossing my dash, I knew hardly anything else about them, or how they would get to that point.

...So imagine my surprise when I witnessed Jayce just straight-up murdering the guy that I knew he would end up gazing at like this:

(Though, as I imagine, it was probably not that much less of a shock to people watching the show as it came out.)

In hindsight, of course I understand that it's very much by design that the viewer is kept in the dark about Jayce's motivations until the last possible moment (whether or not I agree with this decision and what it meant for the characters is another topic entirely... as in, you will never convince me that Jayce, if not for plot-imposed secrecy, wouldn't have tried to explain things to Viktor and would instead really just go "so anyway, I started blasting").

I assume we're supposed to think, at that point, that Jayce is either possessed by some force like the Arcane, went fully insane, or is indeed just out for Viktor's blood for some reason.

Which is why, upon second viewing, I found it even more incredible how Fortiche rrreally squeezed the absolute most out of the facial animations and, in fact, gave us a myriad of microexpressions which are supposed to still show us Jayce's true feelings once you know what you're looking for.

He may be looking at Viktor like a rabid raccoon most of the time, but then there's also:

The first time he hears (his) Viktor's voice again.

This part of his "split face" right before he shoots Viktor.

The dead last frame of this shot after shooting him.

Not to mention this sequence of faces as he stumbles out. just kill me it would hurt less

It's obvious enough once you know, yet subtle enough to remain obscured if you don't.

Also, another thing I want to draw attention to is how Jayce's "madness" stops the moment the deed is done (and only returns when Viktor does) - he is already fully lucid by the time he helps Caitlyn and Vi escape from the commune.

Which to me, looking back, indicates one thing specifically:

Jayce's mind freaking out on him to the brink of collapse until this moment wasn't just madness, or PTSD, or the touch of the Arcane.

He was waging outright war against himself to the point of dissociating to be able to do what he did to Viktor.

(Again - was it necessary for him to do it? I don't think the show really took the time to show us why it would be... but that wasn't the topic of this post.)

What is UraIchi Week?

An event to celebrate the Urahara Kisuke x Kurosaki Ichigo ship. For this year, the "week" will stretch for 9 days, with 8 days of optional prompts and 1 free day on Ichigo's birthday. There is no sign-up, and everybody can participate. Completed works and wips are both acceptable, and any type of fanwork (fanfic, fanart, gifsets, fanvids, etc.) is welcome. NSFW and/or potentially trigger-y content is allowed, although please remember to tag your works properly.

The ship itself can be written romantically or platonically, as lovers or friends or even enemies, so long as it stars these two characters together in some way. Poly ships are also fine so long as Ichigo and Kisuke are still the focus of the fanwork. And crossovers and fusions are also allowed even if it isn’t one of the given prompts for the event. Basically, anything goes, and the only criteria is that it has to be UraIchi-centric.

Santiago and his relationship with Armand

OK so I actually wrote most of this as tags to a post that compared Santiago mocking Louis in the restaurant with Louis mocking Santiago after he set the theatre on fire, but I realized I wanted to expand on the idea.

Basically, I had always interpreted Santiago's hatred of Louis as jealousy over him 'stealing' Armand (both in the book and in the show). An interview with Ben Daniels confirmed that while Santiago was initially written as straight, Ben felt the only way Santiago would so viciously hate Louis was if he was in love with Armand. However, in the same interview he also said that Santiago had been in love with his maker, and his jealousy of Louis and conflict over Armand killing his maker made him want to destroy Louis.

After reading this, I was more than a little confused: if Santiago loved his maker, how could he fall in love with Armand?

Then I saw the gifset and was reminded of this moment-

Louis mocks Santiago about his maker's disdain for him, and how his maker abandoned him shortly after he turned him. Santiago loved his maker, but his maker did not love him back.

Now, we aren't given any timeline of events in terms of when Santiago is made, when he joins the Coven and when Armand kills his maker, but I think it's safe to assume it all happens not long after he was turned. So we have fledgling Santiago, bitterly in love with a maker who disdains him, meeting the beautiful and powerful Armand. Armand welcomes him into the Coven, gives him the opportunity to return to his theatrical career, and kills the maker that wounded Santiago's pride and heart. From that perspective, Armand must have seemed like an avenging angel to Santiago- of course he'd fall in love.

For years, Santiago forges his way up the ranks of the Coven, serving Armand and becoming his right hand man and star of the show. The other vampires of the coven practically throw themselves at him, some of the women literally fighting each other over him...but his heart belongs to Armand.

Then Louis and Claudia come into town, and Armand's attention leaves him for this beautiful man that Santiago can't help feeling attracted to too. And Armand lets this newcomer do pretty much whatever he wants, making the execution of Santiago's maker suddenly seem a lot less fair... yet Armand is still the one responsible for pretty much all the opportunities and good things in Santiago's life, and he's still the one Santiago loves and wants above all others.

Just look at his reaction to seeing Armand's photo in Louis' apartment-

There's no anger there, no hate. He's in love. And he wants Armand back.

Santiago must've been thrilled when Armand seemingly changed his mind about Louis and Claudia and agreed to punish them for their "crimes". I suspect, though this is only hinted at in the show, that after the trial, Armand regrets choosing the coven and allows himself to be overthrown by Santiago (Celeste is overheard by Louis saying that Armand was overthrown and there's no reason to doubt her at this point). Now Santiago has (he thinks) everything he wants: leadership of the coven, his rival dead, and Armand seemingly broken and at his mercy. When we see him watching Armand bow his head to him and slip into his coffin, Santiago stares at him with naked hunger, completely ignoring Celeste hanging off his arm.

He thinks it's only a matter of time before Armand will become his lover once more. Instead, Armand frees Louis and allows him to destroy Santiago's world.

My theory: the buddie fandom members are more inclined to reject (and even to rebel) against something that they don't agree with (or causes them pain) and are willing to believe in any sign that may indicate that what they want is in fact happening, even if it's against all logic; while the BT fandom members seem more grounded in reality, recognizing what's happening and being able to accept it (which doesn't mean they can't manifest their disagreement), despite the pain said reality may cause.

is this an age thing (buddies skewing younger and BTs skewing older)? a cultural thing (religious background / education / literacy levels)?

I'm intrigued by this.

Yeah, I've been thinking along these lines, i.e. that it's about the dominant modes of reading in each fandom.

The most prominent Buddie shippers believe Buddie's going canon, and that involves a lot of reading between the lines: the show is sending you subtle messages, the signs are obvious to the skilled ("media literate") interpreter, of course they wouldn't spoil things in interviews. The gifset of alleged season 8 foreshadowing for Bobby's return fits right into that - attention and close reading are supposed to reveal the hidden truth.

I love the point about the tendency to reject/rebel against canon, which is linked to an investment in canon: this thing that you want isn't happening onscreen, and that's unacceptable, so therefore it will, it has to (and it's so important for it to happen, there may be no way to convince you that it won't).

Whereas the Bucktommy fandom did the exact opposite in the wake of the breakup: we both accepted canon and distanced ourselves from it. Even as more people got more hopeful for a reconciliation, our main project in the hiatus was to solidify into a fandom that could survive without the show. At the same time - and it wasn't immediately clear this would happen - we started heavily incorporating 8x06 material into our readings. The prevailing characterization of Tommy shifted significantly. We dive deep into their communication issues. We hated the episode, but we decided to take a lot of it at face value and turn it into a "better" story.

To avoid the "grounded in reality" value judgment for a minute, I'd say the Bucktommy fandom leans more pessimistic. Believing in the Buddie long game requires optimism, faith that the show is intentional and patient. Bucktommy fans are more likely to express cynicism about Tim Minear and distrust in the show; taking the text at face value/arguing that the show "isn't subtle," even if accurate, is related to the general post-breakup wariness. (It's also related to having a canon ship - we never had to excavate it, it was happening onscreen.)

Of course the Bucktommy fandom has also already coped with the sudden loss of a beloved character; a lot of us were processing a lot of grief in November, and I think even the people who were clowning early reconciled themselves to the possibility he wouldn't come back. The irony is that we were wrong, and Tommy did return! But the experience still primed a lot of us to start grieving Bobby and coming to terms with his death quickly. (It's also ironic that we're taking the press at face value, but the Peter farewell tour is so much more extensive than the Lou "exit interviews" that believing it seems like the smart/realistic/pessimistic thing to do.)

I'm unwilling to generalize about demographics without hard data, and I think we overinterpret the age thing. There are plenty of younger Bucktommy fans, and plenty of older fans with the reactions or behavior people sneer at as juvenile. I'd tentatively say the fact that many of our most prominent writers are late 30s or older has shaped the fic landscape, and the unusually high percentage of queer men has influenced the culture. But whether this has any bearing on the Bobby alive vs. dead debate, I couldn't say.

I'm not very good at text posts, I never know where to start, it's why most of what I write are tags on gifsets and replies to asks. It helps me to have something to go off of.

Yesterday, I wrote a bit about the first day of the ceasefire in Gaza, but I left out some events in the West Bank. I saw this tweet today and I think it gives me a good starting point:

A few people in the replies asked: what about the ceasefire?

This IS Palestine under a ceasefire. This is Palestine before Oct 7th. They don't have the right to defend themselves, the peaceful status quo that creates no headlines is the steady hum of Palestinians being attacked and killed as their homes and livelihood are destroyed, kidnapped and held for possibly years on "administrative detention", which means no charge or trial.

And "It begins."? I searched Google news for "West Bank killed" and picked a random page:

To be clear, this is the West Bank, not Gaza. Hamas is only the ruling party in Gaza and ostensibly the target of Israel's "war", but that clearly hasn't protected Palestinians in the West Bank. Israel increased their attacks after October 7th and might yet escalate now, with Gaza quiet, but for those that say "there was a ceasefire on October 6th", there is this headline:

To go back to current events, this happened yesterday in the West Bank:

There continue to be new attacks in the West Bank today, the ones referred to in the very first tweet. They tend to come from any combination of Israeli settlers, police, and the IDF.

Currently, the police have shot two settlers they thought were Palestinians and the whole area has now been locked down.

They've arrested many Palestinian men...for what? When will they let them go?

So ends day 2 of the ceasefire.

So, we all know the iconic scene where Herbert beheads Dr. Hill with the shovel, and spits the iconic, "Plagiarist!" line. It's funny and very in-character for Herbert West.

Well, what if I told you...

Nope...turns out the entire time he says,

"Laid to rest."

I discovered this when putting together an integral cut of the film with CC (DM me if you want the link!). I sourced all existing clips and CC from the Arrow DVD release from 2012 and when I got to this scene was shocked to see, "laid to rest," and not "plagiarist." I thought maybe it could have been an error in the CC, so first I took a closer look at the clip:

When Jeff delivers the line, his lips don't touch to make the "P" sound.

Okay, well I could be hearing wrong, it could be off-sync audio, or it could've been ADR/looped incorrectly in post. All valid points. Which is why, I cross-referenced the CC on other platforms. And...

But we don't stop there! For further confirmation why, let's check out to see how the novelization did this scene. And...

"...Laid to rest."

And if you're still not convinced, I regret to inform that going back to THE SOURCE - the original screenplay - is a dead end. The scene was not originally scripted with dialogue so this line was either improvised by Jeff, or work shopped between him and Stuart Gordon on set or in-post.

Jeff Satur Cinematic Universe Primer

Overview: Jeff tells a variety of stories in his music videos with really interesting characters. Over time, those characters have returned and begun interacting with each other. Here are a few of the most common you’ll run into!

Sunshine [gifset]

Sunshine made his first appearance in the Dum Dum MV, where he has blue hair and “Sunshine Moonshine Love Die” tattooed on his neck and chest. Sunshine then appeared in the Space Shuttle No. 8 Asia Tour Promo Trailer in a pale blond wig alongside another Jeff.

When Jeff was called on to do a sexy version of Dum Dum on Chuang Asia, he said he was too shy and that he would have “another [him]” perform it instead; he performed as Sunshine. During Space Shuttle No. 8 in Bangkok concerts, he had a body double in Sunshine’s wig onstage with him, and sang ‘Strangers’ to him. Sunshine also appeared in projections during the concerts, along with the quote:

Sunshine noun. a god who honestly feels emotions, never lies to themselves, and will stay forever in your soul.

Jeff confirmed that three characters appear in Dum Dum. Sunshine is the one wearing a black suit and seen playing a phin. Moonshine is shown in either a tank top or shirtless and can be seen carrying a gun or with a metal attachment over his arm. Lovedie is the one dressed in a suit, sometimes referred to as “Businessman Jeff”, who is killed and then gasps back to life at the end of the video.

In an interview on ล้นFEED ep.17 @ 14:20, eff shares that Lovedie represents someone broken – love that dies, a broken or dead love – someone who needs help from Sunshine. Sunshine represents the darker side that stems from anger and aggression. Moonshine is split off from Sunshine. The two were “conjured” by Lovedie and Moonshine handles the things that Lovedie can’t do. Moonshine helps Lovedie get revenge in the MV.

Ghost & Husband [gifset]

Also called Clone, Ghost appears as the titular character in the Ghost MV, who is revealed to be a clone of another Jeff (commonly ‘Husband’ or ‘Military Jeff’). Clone/Ghost has implants down his spine. He was captured by the military (specifically, Military Jeff) and freed at the end of the video.

In the Yellow Leaf MV, it’s revealed that Clone/Ghost doesn’t age. He still has the same appearance many decades later, after Husband has died. Husband/Military Jeff is implied to have spent time during the Ghost MV in outer space (there’s a rocket launch at the beginning of the video). There is a love triangle between Husband, Clone, and their Wife (she is implied to have married each of them separately by accepting their rings).

Rain God [gifset]

Jeff held a fanart contest for Halloween 2023, and the winning entry depicted him as a rain god. He posted a photo/video shoot on his Instagram dressed to match the fanart. This is believed to be partly inspired by the Black Tie MV  – there was a joke on set that Jeff was a rain god, because the rain for the courtyard scene began when it was time to film, and ended as soon as they finished shooting it.

Black Tie [gifset]

Jeff in the Black Tie MV is sometimes referred to as ‘Black’, and has a bow tie tattooed across his throat. He appears in black-and-white when alone, and in color only when shown with other people–which includes his own reflections in mirrors. Jeff is also seen wearing red. Although it has not been confirmed that this is a separate character, some fans may include him as another character referred to as ‘Red.’

Lucid [gifset]

Lucid is the titular character in the Lucid MV. He might be one of the fae folk, or a lost boy from Neverland. He appears injured and wild in someone’s bedroom…or possibly their dream. He has long hair and anachronistic clothes, with a cut across the bridge of his nose. At the end of the video he’s seen at the base of a tree (possibly dead), almost completely covered in flowers.

Steal the Show [gifset]

Jeff appeared along with Shaun in the collaborative Steal the Show  MV. They have a passionate rivalry and/or flirtation. There’s a lot of imagery in this video, including Jeff hanging off a giant birdcage which Shaun is separately seen trapped inside. This character has been referred to as ‘Thief’ and ‘Passion.’ Shaun’s character is referred to as ‘Reason.’

00008 [gifset]

In an effort to give his fans heart palpitations, Jeff released a Dum Dum Unchained Live MV. He appears chained on his knees in a basement or warehouse, wearing a lace blindfold, with finger-shaped bruises around his neck. There are additional bruises all over him, and a tattoo that reads ‘00008’ below his left collarbone. The number is now believed to refer to Jeff’s first album, Space Shuttle No. 8.

SS8 [gifset]

The Space Shuttle No. 8 Asia Tour came with its own promo trailer, in which a dark-haired Jeff and a pale-haired Sunshine (from Dum Dum) face off on a train in outer space, which has “departed the Saturn hemisphere” and is “now en route into the unknown.” On the train are references to many of Jeff’s previous songs and videos, including Highway (a flower), Loop (a clock), Lucid (a flower crown), Black Tie (a photo on the cover of the newspaper with the headline “Jeff Satur: Escape…From Earth!”), Complicated (a bloody hammer), Fade (a record player), and Comedy (playing in the background).

Along with the SS8 Album came The Journey Book which tells the story of how the Writer, Sunshine, and other characters from the various SS8 music videos are connected in a virtual reality simulation. Scans of the Journey Book can be found here by vani-ash.

Ride or Die [gifset]

Jeff’s character in the Ride or Die MV, sometimes referred to as ‘Ride,’ first appears in a straight jacket and is brought into a room to undergo some sort of psychological test by a female in a suit (usually referred to as Becky, after the actress who portrays her). Ride is abducted and taken to a hideout where he works with Becky to perform a heist. She ends up betraying Ride. As the betrayal plays out, the scene cuts to a potential flashback filled with Macbeth imagery, where we see Sunshine dressed as a king. As Ride gets arrested and at the end when Ride is once again in a straight jacket and seated in front of the woman who betrayed him, we see Sunshine, dressed in a police uniform, watching the arrest and the confrontation through a security camera.

The streaks of white in Ride’s hair are related to Sunshine. The director of Jeff’s SS8 BKK tour revealed that in a conversation with Jeff, the streak of white signifies a person who has been possessed by Sunshine.

Lost and Found [gifset]

The Lost and Found MV has two Jeffs. One with shorter hair, wearing khaki, appears in the video in brighter and warmer lighting. Another Jeff with longer hair and a black trench coat is seen in darker and cooler lighting, and appears dragging a heavy crate behind him as snow falls around him. Khaki Jeff finds his way home to his love, and one day after using paint that she mixes, he faints. Khaki Jeff is confined in a plexiglass box where he and his paintings are being auctioned off. Trench Coat Jeff barges into the auction, dragging his load (of emotional baggage) and reaches out for Khaki Jeff’s hand. As their hands touch through the plexiglass, they exchange places with Khaki Jeff free to escape while Trench Coat Jeff urges him on with a smile.

Red Giant [gifset]

The Red Giant Concert promo video talks about the stage in a star’s life as it comes to an end, growing bigger and burning hotter until it gives birth to something greater–reborn as a red giant. The Red Giant has white hair, red skin, black nails, and the same tattoos as Sunshine. It also has two white horns on its forehead that gradually fade to red as they get closer to its skin.

Other Jeffs

During the Space Shuttle No. 8 in Bangkok concerts, Jeff wore a black feather cape that spread into wings for his cover of ‘Feeling Good.’ (You can see a glimpse of Bird Jeff, as well as his body double Sunshine, in this Est Cola video.

The Fade MV shows him being reincarnated through several different time periods, always connected to the same person, up to the present day. (In the present, his name is Jeff, and hers is Trinity.)

The Complicated MV shows the end of a relationship and how it eventually leads to Jeff’s character taking revenge for his friend’s life. This character is sometimes referred to as ‘Comp’ or ‘Kay.’

The Scar MV with bodyslam shows him levitating into the scene, and at the end he crosses into a portal. There’s a lot of imagery in this video as well.

While Jeff was a contestant on Call Me By Fire, he was a caged fallen angel in the Law of Attraction performance and an imprisoned/enthralled therapy patient in Animal World.

For his Siam Halloween Concert 2023, Jeff dressed up as a vampire, in a corset with blue contact lenses and fangs.

During The Kingdoms concert, he was referred to as the ‘King of Darkness’, mentioned being in hell, and was shown in promotional materials and projections with an eagle.

For the Siam Halloween Concert 2024, Jeff dressed up as Damon, a character from Happy Ending, a series created by Jeff. Damon is a character in a story within the show.  The ~7 minute Happy Ending pilot can be viewed on YT.

For Enchanted Festival 2024 Jeff’s persona was promoted as a “Demon of Fire: The eternal vulture hunter, filled with fiery and eternal power. Join House of Fire with our hero as we prepare to enter the haunted magical realm of Enchanted” … although at the actual performance Jeff performed as Sunshine (in a lace bodysuit with lace gloves).

Jeff also wrote a song for Pramy Cat as part of a sponsorship endorsement. Pramy might show up in a work as a Cat Dad or Cat Mom.

In hindsight Swiss should’ve known better.

The signs were there. Waking up in a cold sweat with his cheeks burning, a tugging feeling in his gut that could only be quelled by a hand roughly palming himself on top of his hotel comforter early in the morning. He chocked it up to the shitty hotel ac, barely blew into the room and during the dead of August the small breeze didn’t help much.

The main sign was when the feeling didn’t stop once he was packed up and back on the tour bus. Swiss sat in front of the vents with his face in the air, legs drawn up to his chest in a feeble attempt to stop the ache between his thighs. Too hot and too much. He elected to ignore it anyways.

Swiss should have thought ahead more when he had to change his underwear to put on his uniform. His own heady scent filling his nostrils as he pulled off his sweats, dragging the damp fabric down his legs. It should have been the main factor in trying to just breathe through the show, go through the motions without incident and once he was off the stage he could fall at mountain or rains feet and beg them for help, even if he was ignoring his own heat.

Heat clouded his mind, fingers slipping down and between his folds as he pulled off his underwear to change. In his brain the excuse was to clean up, to just see how wet he truly was, but the excuse falls apart as he brings his own fingers to his lips with a whimper.

Swiss was much too sensitive like this, just the act of sliding his fingers between himself with the intent of innocence had him bucking and his thighs shaking with want. He could feel his clit pulse as he reluctantly pulled his hand away from himself.

But this time? Mountain can see his mic stand shine in the light from behind him. Slick from where he grinded on it like he just couldn’t help himself.

He watches his hands move down his body, pretending like he’s performing even as the heel of his palm digs right into his cunt, no doubt adding pressure to his clit. It’s obscene, mountain has no clue how he gets away with it but god he’s glad he’s so far back behind his drums, any closer and the audience could probably hear him growling from underneath his mask.

The drumsticks in his hands crack, part of one going flying behind him as mountain continues to stare.
