The Backgammon Players
Artist: Theodoor Rombouts (Flemish, 1597–1637)
Date: 1634
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC, United States
Description
In this painting, and also in some of his other works, Rombouts has placed himself and his wife rather obviously among the bystanders, a custom which was not unusual in Dutch genre painting, particularly among the Caravaggists. The lavishly dressed soldier bears the artist's likeness.

(Cross-posted, with a few minor edits, from bsky)
A post there reminded me of my headcanon (stolen from my own childhood) of single kid Steve who played board games on his own, with rules only he knew then, and only he remembers now.
He gets so confused playing board games with everyone later on, because they don't know stuff like when you go to jail in Monopoly you can't get out Until you've freed all your pawns from Start in Sorry. If you go bankrupt in Monopoly before then, you can challenge the Banker to a speed round of Uno (if you play a Draw 4 on the first round, you take over the Bank and automatically get Boardwalk + any hotels or houses Boardwalk).
There are more, more complicated rules that include different combinations of board games, but no one seems to understand, and tell him he's making things needlessly complicated (which is HYSTERICAL coming from Eddie & the rest of Hellfire after they made Steve sit through a 30 minute lecture on THACO and backstab rules, not to mention why he couldn't do a fireball as a fighter, the one time he played D&D with them).
Robin gets most of the rules, but her attention span for board games is worse than his is for movies, so they rarely play any, and Nancy refuses 'your twisted idea of Game Night' after that time they play TwisterOfLife: TroublePursuit Ed. when they'd 1st been dating.
It's not until Jon and Argyle finally make it to a Game Night that Steve finds his match. You see, Argyle is also an only child with his own rules for board games, and unlike the other only children in the group, he understands on a soul level what Steve does: the fun of board games was in combining them into the most chaotic versions of themselves, and then using them to crush your friends, enemies, and stuffed animals into defeat.
The rest of the party, who to this point has only ever seen the most chill version of Argyle, watches as the two of them engag in all-out warfare that leaves the Harrington house in shambles by the time it's done almost twenty hours later.
The winner?
Steve's old stuffed bear, fished out from the attic.
Steve maintains, as he had in the fateful Coup of 1976, that Snuggles had cheated. Argyle agrees.
#steve harrington#argyle stranger things#platonic stargyle#or maybe they bang#maybe they bang platonically#i don't make the rules#steve and argyle do#maybe they make it part of Twistopoly of Life: Backgammon Edition#the party#robin buckly#eddie munson#nancy wheeler#dustin henderson#jonathan byers#i think max would actually get super into steve's twisted game night#and so would erica#they just weren't there the other times because they have lives#their words not mine#max mayfield#erica sinclair#oh! i bet wayne gets into it too#so wayne and steve and argyle and max and erica all have a 'steve's twisted game night tm' once a month#there is no banging at this one obviously#wayne munson

Idk how many people follow me that are living in montreal, but my friends and I have been working on a project for over a year to open a space where people can come in to play board games, role playing games, larps, etc, and meet people who also want to play. A place to find DMs, or try a new board games.
We started a crowdfunder on La Ruche, if you can spare a few canadian bucks we would love it. We evaluated the price of tickets as low as possible for renting a space (after looking EVERYWHERE in the neighbourhood), and we have a lot of hope to be able to start our project and bring you loads of activities!
Our website is here (French only, sorry)
https://hochelagaludique.ca/
And our campaign at La Ruche here:

I hope to see you there!

The Evolution of RPGs: Twenty Squares
My conjecture is this: everywhere in the world that develops a stratified, sedentary society also, sooner or later, develops tabletop games, starting with games like Mehen (most of which have not survived). But Mehen-style race games are frankly pretty boring, so inevitably, the culture will graduate from that to what we now call a "tables" game, which is a subgenre of race game where there's a lot more strategy involved: you have more ways to use any single dice roll, and the optimal move in any situation is not always obvious. The oldest examples are the game of Twenty Squares, which comes from Mesopotamia, and Senet from Egypt, both of which date back perhaps as far back as roughly 2600 to 3000 BCE, but there are tons of examples from virtually every corner of the globe. Despite the remarkable similarities of these games, there's no evidence linking them to a common ancestry, meaning that they were all invented independently. Tables games are like pottery and metallurgy – they're just something that humans tend to do, eventually, when left to our own devices.
