Love (or Ghosts of a Non-Place) is an interactive performance and exhibition, whose attempt is to trace through the narratives, acts, images and sounds the existential stigma of the concept of love, taking place in the heart of Athens, Bageion building in Omonia Square. Its visual identity works as a parallel: evolution, re-order in terms of time as well as spatial relativities, in an attempt to connect the intermediate, ephemeral and porous character of Omonia Square, a place that hardly creates stops and relations. — The Birthdays Design, Athens

Μελωδία που παραπέμπει σε τελετουργία.
Οι στίχοι εκφράζουν αυτό για το οποίο θέλω να μιλήσω: μια πόλη φλέγεται/καταστρέφεται, ποιος μένει πίσω; Τι μπορεί να του συμβαίνει;

A flisni greqisht Enver Hoxha?/ Do you speak Greek Enver Hoxha?
/Performance/ video, DOKOUMENA, in the context of the Athens Biennale "Waiting for the Barbarians", 2017, Bageion, Athens, Greece The performance A flisni Greqisht Enver Hoxha? was conceived as a comment on the modern Greek nationalistic delirium. Detecting the origin of the phenomenon in the beginning of the 90’s -a decay marked by the massive immigration of Albanian citizens, the Greek society position concerning the Otherness along with “alien identity” violent confrontations- my aim would be to represent a performative process bringing in the stage the iso-polyphonic speech of the others. The Albanian iso-polyphony is composed by traditional songs consisting in two solo parts, a melody and an “antimelody” with choral droans. The structure of the two melodies, varies according the different droans performance that are usually improvised, creating multifaceted and diverse polyphonic dialogues. Considering the droan as an antiregulatory factor, I attempt an allegoric comment on polyphony, being considered as the par excellence participatory form of Democracy. Being inspired by the Documenta14 Exercises of Freedom featuring exotic “voices” of tormented minorities and suffering bodies, I ironically transition the institutional parameters of the Parliament of the Bodies into a different space and time, the Waiting-for-the-Barbarians-Athens-Biennale.

AKINHTO/ IMMOBILE (ATHENS 2016-2017)
ATHENS BIENNALE 2016-2017, OMONOIA AKINHTO/ IMMOBILE aims at the creation of an ‘imobile’ co-owned property in Athens which will not be able to return back to the market again.
The word AKINHTO refers to the Greek legal term of a real estate or landed property as defined in relation to the fixed/immobile connection to the ground (in German: lmmobilie, in Italian: immobile). Under this title the project tries to redefine difsunctionality and complexity of Greek multi-‐ownership as an anti-‐capitalist model. At the same time AKINITO understands immobility as a core component of new structures and practices of co-‐ownership and co-‐habitation against land speculation and gentrification.
It is interesting that Greece and especially the city of Athens was not created through big urban developments and planning but through an economical model based on exchange called antiparochi, which allowed the individual collaboration of land/house owners with constructors, for the creation of individual apartment buildings (the typical polykatoikia) that form the city. Two laws came to support this exchange model, the first one is the law for individual horizontal properties, and the second one is the law for undivided shares or else tenancy in common. Both Greek laws on ownership in connection to the family structure resulted to a very complex situation where multi-‐horizontal-‐ ownership and undivided shares created fragmented property that makes it almost impossible for those buildings to return to the real estate market since it would only be done through common agreement of all those different owners.  In this sense, the complexity of co-‐ownership of the Greek model can be seen as an anti-‐capitalist model, that blocks the commodification of housing. Considering housing a common good we can look at multi-‐ownership in Greece as a shared power between the citizens fighting against property speculation. Paradoxically it is the public property in Greece that is being privatised and sold out, while the fragmented individual private property still stays out of the market.
It is interesting to see that this very model of complex co-‐ownership and mis‐communication is used in anti-‐gentrification house projects in various cities such as Leipzig or Zurich, in which many people are involved in complex and often controversial processes of buying a building, protecting it from its future sale and return to the market. Another interesting element is how such housing projects initiatives introduce themselves as anarchist movements, using capitalist tools such as the buy out of property. AKINITO aims as a first step to document and preserve this model of complexity in Athens viewed through the potentiality of shared power, individual and collective ownership and the blocking of housing commodification. As a response to the Functional City of 1933, the Disfunctional City of today’s cities like Athens could possibly introduce a new model of complexity which combined with citizens tactics can become De Certeau’ s ‘creative resistances’.

The first phase of the project AKINHTO took place on Sunday 29 May 2016 at Bageion, 18 Omonoia Square: http://athensbiennale.org/en/uncategorized-en/project-akinito-2/

Athens. Omonoia Square Renovation works on Omonia Square in central Athens are entering the final straight, with plans to reinstall a fountain removed from the square in the early 1990s. New hotels are slated to open on Pireos and Stadiou streets, while the historic Bageion and Alexandros hotels are to reopen. The four-story Bageion Hotel, on the corner of Athinas Street, was constructed between 1890 and 1894 based on plans by the architect Ernst Ziller. The Bageion and the Alexandros hotels are listed buildings and landmarks of the capital’s 19th century urban architecture. Photo by Nikos Kokkalias.

STORIES OBJECTS HOLD
a Honorary* Performance w. Madeleine Kate McGowan, Tandem Europe final meeting, Bageion Hotel, Athens 2017
“Laura told me a story about her childhood, and her obsession with taking photos and cameras. She had a favourite camera that was red, it was top of the range. She was on a road trip with her family and on the way back from their destination they stopped in a forest in croatia. She felt very happy being surrounded by nature with her family. She was walking down a wooden pathway with them and she tripped and fell into the water. At that moment she had only one thought in her head, to save her camera, and she held it high above her head so it didn’t get wet. She still has her camera.”
“The box reminded him of a coffin. Or he also liked it because it was neutral. It reminded him of the phase in Hamlet, where he says ‘to be or not to be’. I asked him if he was thinking about death. He was. He is. One of his friends just lost both her parents. He said, that we shouldn’t take anything for granted.”
Read about the installation in the essay ACTIONS OF TRIBUTE TO ZYGMUNT BAUMAN on the Tandem Europe webpage.
