Of course we’ve all been there as Master Barbers at one point or another. Sitting down waiting for those precious walk-ins.. As you gain more experience in the business you learn how to negotiate your chair and also how to gain clientele without actually having to sit in the shop all day doing nothing. With that learning curve also comes hard lessons for many young Barbers that don’t have guidance.. Learning the importance of good customer service is in my top three of important Barber attributes. Some young barbers don’t take it serious enough and when they finally do get a client they don’t know how to make them come back. Then they wonder why their clientele isn’t building up or why their tips suck. Treating clients like real people and not a statistic has always worked for me. Asking whats their name is a start.. Ask them what are their likes, dislikes... What do they do for a living, Do they hate their wife? Anything to start a conversation works.. I’ve learned so many things from my clients over the years that I can actually say my clients have helped me grow in many ways. I can remember at my first shop sometimes I sat a whole day without cutting one person meanwhile all the other Barbers were busy cutting. No one passed me a client, no one told me that I had to make eye contact with walk-ins or get out there with business cards and get my own custees. It was survival of the fittest and I had to learn all that on my own. Thats why I never forget how blessed I am that now I don’t need to find clients anymore, they find me and in some cases ask for a house call.. To get to this point it took a lot of hard work. I had to fall several times and keep getting back up not only as a Barber comedian but also as a teacher.. The most important thing is never to give up on your talent..
