Any Bart Allen fic recs? (Other than your own)

I don't read that many fics these days unless they are written by my treasured mutuals or if it's literally thrust in my face but I do have a couple that I have read that I really enjoyed.

The Deification of One Bartholomew Henry Allen II by Avacelt which really compels me. It is Konbart, but Bart is first and forefront the main character.

No Time Like the Present by lost-frequencies is a Timbart fic taking place in the Gotham Knights (video game) universe that pulls so much lore from the comics and marries it in a very beautiful way.

Sunshine in the Rearview Mirror by SleepySpeedster is a phenomenally done Bart/Preston fic that really feels natural to them.

Second Chance by FandomExplosion_01 is short and sweet, a Konbart fic about their return from Gemworld and what to do next.

In looking through my bookmarks I don't have ANY gen-non-ship Bart fic... I don't think this was on purpose... I don't think I'm the ONLY person writing gen Bart fic I can't be. I do distinctly remember adding several to my bookmarks but it looks like the one I am most fervently remembering was deleted.

You have headcanons on Bartholomew Henry Impulse Allen II?

I somehow missed the part where you literally called him Impulse, because I had to google to make sure this was talking about Bart, because I couldn’t remember if he was the second or third Bartholomew, and plus I was surprised his middle name in Henry.

Like Bart Allen’s middle name is Henry. It’s so freaking weird to me.

Hmmm. I already made a headcanon thing for Bart before, but I’m see if I can think of any new ones cause that’s what I tried doing with Tim and Cassie before too.

Has a very high ranking in shooter games because he’s one of the few people that can set his mouse or camera sensitivity in the game on high and actually be able to control it. So he can shoot the other team super fast. People say he hacks and gets kicked out of games for it, but it’s genuinely not. He stopped playing a few games cause he couldn’t stay in any online matches though.

When he finds out he grew taller than Tim even in his lifts. He takes Tim’s lifts and wears them himself while Tim doesn’t have any. Which makes Tim have that guttural “something is wrong” feeling that he can’t put his mind on. At least until he notices Bart keeps calling him more “little” based teases than usual. But when Bart takes off the lifts and Bart is still noticeably taller than him, Tim’s soul shakes even though he knew logically it was the case. His head just remembers when they used to be the same height still.

Used the Young Justice girl’s locker room. But he didn’t realize it, and still doesn’t know he went into the different one. The girls walked in after him and Bart’s attention span was so gone he just sped through everything that he literally didn’t notice.

During a particularly, angrier than usual Bart fit, he went on a spirit journey and literally ran with wolves. He returned with a five o’ clock shadow no one knew he could grow, and an animal pelt as a jacket made from an animal the wolves killed. Every campfire Bart tells an even more exaggerated version of the story to the point it’s just completely unbelievable and everyone calls bullcrap but he keeps on telling it.

Very good at impressions, especially Tim. Tim yells that his voice isn’t that squeaky, but after his voice cracks, he knows that he already lost the argument.

Tried to go to comic con with Tim and Cassie because they said video game people would be there, but his attention span was so bad he couldn’t handle the lines. He went as Master Chief from Halo (I don’t know anything about shooter games to be honest).

Once he got into horror movies, he became a living nightmare for everyone because of all the jump scares in hockey masks he’d do.

Max can’t figure out why Bart has so many clothes he never wears all over his floor. Then he reads a name printed in sharpie on some of them that says “TIMMY D.” and Max doesn’t know rather to leave it be or tell Bart he has to fix this.

He’s not even a clothes thief. His room is just such a mess that when people stay over, stuff just gets lost into the mess. The only clothes he ever stole was Conner’s jacket because he can’t get over how try-hard he thinks it looks. To which Conner says Bart isn’t trying hard enough when he sees Bart wearing a dress shirt and basket ball shorts.

Conner while trying to act extra tough told Bart to hit him as hard as he could. Bart did it so fast and so hard that Conner had a swollen cheek for weeks and refused to sit by him for a while until everyone points out to him “You literally told him to do it”.

Brief Bio:

Bart Allen was the son of Meloni Thawne and Don Allen, born in the 30th century. Don Allen was the son of famous 20th century superhero/speedster The Flash, aka Barry Allen.

Meloni was the daughter of Eobard Thawne, otherwise known as one of The Flash’s most crucial enemies, Reverse-Flash. Despite the complicated histories between both families, Meloni and Don eloped and had their son.

Bart was born with his father’s meta-abilities of superspeed. Unlike Barry, who obtained his speed later in life, Bart was born with it and therefore had issues with it. Bart’s hyper-abilities forced his body to rapidly age, to the point where if there was no intervention, Bart would die at the young age of 12 or 13. His body aged faster than his mind, meaning even though he was chronologically 2 years old, he would appear to be 12.

Bart was kidnapped from his parents shortly after birth and experimented on by the government. To prevent him from dying of his powers, Bart was placed in a VR (Virtual Reality) program. It was similar to a video game where there were no consequences to his actions. This would affect him later on. Despite the intervention and experimentation, nothing was being done to prevent Bart from his fate of dying due to his powers.

His grandmother, Iris West-Allen decided enough was enough and snuck Bart from the future back to her previous time so that, hopefully, her nephew, Wally West, could teach Bart how to regulate and control his abilities so that he wouldn’t die. Iris successfully pleaded her grandson’s case to her nephew, and Bart was saved from his death. However, things didn’t end there.

Wally did not want the responsibility of his cousin on his shoulders because of Bart’s spontaneous and reckless behavior and impaired understanding of the world. Bart was placed in the care of a fellow speedster named Max Mercury. Under the guise of being uncle and nephew, Bart and Max moved to Manchester Alabama to start anew.

Under Max’s guide, Bart spent a few years in Manchester learning how to be a normal kid his age while also balancing his superhero life alongside it. He eventually joined a team of teenage superheroes called Young Justice and became close friends with the members of this alliance.

After Max had disappeared, Bart was then placed under Jay and Joan Gerrick’s care. Shortly after the fall of Young Justice, Bart retired the Impulse name and begrudgingly became Kid Flash as he became a Teen Titan for a short period.

Miscellaneous Stuff: -  I portray Bart as homosexual. And most likely on the ace/aseual specturm when he is older, though in character he’s still testing the waters. -  At the start of the Young Justice comic, he is 5”1 ft tall ( 154 cm) & weighs 90 lb ( 40 kg). I tend to use these statistics. Also, it is commonly noted across his comic and other ones hes featured in that he appears a lot “younger” than he is!

Where Is ____?

Where is Kon-El?

Common to the Rebirth discourse, from the beginning, has been the question of “Where is Superboy?” Also common to Rebirth discourse, I guess, is the question of “If/When Conner comes back, what will he go by?”

I’m going to answer the second first, because I think it’s super funny that people don’t think there can be two Superboys. Guys, how many Flashes to we have? How many GLs have we had (who have gone by GL on earth and in the League, not in the entirety of the Corps)? My favourite Flash is Flash II, Barry (and how many time has mah boi got to sacrifice himself, anyway? once per Convergence event?), but Flash I is Jay and Flash III is Wally (my Wally, nerd Wally, redhead Wally, love of my life [number, like, six] Wally).

I digress. But I think Conner could just go by Superboy, and there can be two SBs, I and II. Anyway, how great would it be if they can be called “the Superboys” as a unit, the way kids get called “the boys” or “the kids” or whatever? Superfamily has Superboys. I love it.

But damn. DAMN. Geoff, when is the Superboy coming back? He’s been gone since the start of n52, and I get really emotional thinking about it? But, it’s a matter of when, not if, right? And I’ve seen the spread of Death of Superman/Return of Superman panels from Rebirth Action Comics, and the only person missing was Conner, bro. CONNER. (Hell, Supes remembered his 90s ‘do, so where’s Kon?)

Rebirth is... I care about Rebirth a lot, because it’s a capital-C Chance. They done right by me twice (at least), so far, in bringing back Nightwing (and putting him back in blue! HALLELUJAH!) and giving me back my Wally, the one they ruined in their attempts to be more racially diverse back in n52 (because that Wally was never the same character and never even pretended to be, except in name). My Wally’s back, Other-Wally’s still here, the Flash Family is bigger! I love it! I’m in love!

Where is Bart Allen?

I’m all for bigger families. I love the family unit thing that’s going on in DC, and I always have. Did I like Supergirl? No. But, uh, I never liked Superman, either, until a lot more recently. It’s the families I love. Dad!Supes. Aunt!Supergirl. The schtick. The whole thing.

So, where is Bartholomew Allen’s grandson of the same name? Where is my fav future kid (besides my beloved Braniac 5)? He, too, has been missing since the start of n52, since the n52 Bart was a friggin’ imposter and not an Allen and ugh. Spare me.

I think I almost entirely quit n52 after that reveal, and I was just starting to try it, at the time.

A mess. What a mess.

Look, I honestly couldn’t care less about Wonder Girl (unless it’s Donna Troy, or unless we get WG and Troia), but the quintessential trio is Tim Drake, Bart Allen, and Conner Kent. No matter how unfamiliar I was with 90s Titans, I knew that this was the basic trio where Dick, Kori, and Cyborg were the basic 80s trio (I wanted so bad to say Wally - but I’d have to go further back and say Dick, Roy, Wally, and that... other Aqualad? since Wally was The Flash from ‘85 to ‘08, roughly).

What’s the trio, now? Who are Dami’s side babes? I’m actually super irate that there’s no clearly defined third generation trio, ya know? Tim/Bart/Kon (+Cassie) is so classic, and Dick/Kori/Vic (+Troia?) is pretty classic (80s Cyborg tho, pfffft). But like What’s Dami got? Other Wally and... a bunch of original Titans (BB, Rae, Kori, Cy)? I didn’t think he was Dick 2.0. Why doesn’t he get his own, new friends the way Tim did?

I digress. Really bad.

Where was I?

Oh. Bring back the trouble trio! I want SB, Impulse, and Red Robin to tear it up in Rebirth. I want to see them working together, again. Heck, I’d lowkey kill to have Tim leading the Titans, again.

Speaking of Titans, there was maybe one n52 character I cared about, Titan-wise. And it wasn’t not-Conner. It was Bunker.

Where is Miguel Barragan?

Where is The Question? (And I don’t even care which Question, I just kinda miss the faceless weirdo.)

I read a few lists of things missing from Rebirth, and I’m gobsmacked at how many things and people aren’t in Rebirth. Things I thought were integral to DCU stuff, as a whole. I mean, I don’t like Hawkwoman or whatever she’s actually called, but how is she not around? I find Plastic Man laughable, but he’s supposed to be there, isn’t he?

Next thing you’ll tell me is that Alan Scott is awol. (A short Google later) Oh god where is Alan in Rebirth? Tell me he’s there. Tell me he’s not dead. Look, I don’t cre about Jade (idk, I haven’t read enough of her to care, yet), but Alan is special to me, because of... reasons and things. I love this GL Prime type deal he has going on, I love the updated idea of him having a prototype ring or something.

But I’m just digressing more.

Just. Hey, DC? I love that my Wally’s home. And I love that Dick’s not traipsing around as a Secret Agent, anymore (but the wtf aspect of that remains, for me), but I... don’t think i can handle a DC universe without Conner in it. And I don’t really... want a DC universe without Virgil in it. (psa: his middle name is Ovid. How nerdy is that?? Virgil Ovid Hawkins.)

Virgil was important to me, in my childhood. I’m just a white boy, sure, but Virgil was one of my first favourite heroes (along with Spiderman and the X-Men as a whole), and I felt like I learned so much from his show. I’m still pissed I can’t find a box set (DC, get on it).

Nightwing is important to a... portion of my teen years that was otherwise really dark.

Conner was important to me because of his issues and stuggles with personal identity.

These are my heroes in a way that most other iconic heroes just aren’t. I get this thrill of happiness and sense of hope from each of these. I have a list of comics I need to purchase, and almost the entire list is at least peripherally about these characters (or Nightcrawler, of Marvel fame -- for similar reasons to why Conner is important to me). Hell, I got Death of Superman and World Without a Superman just so that I could properly appreciate Conner’s first appearance in Return of Superman!

I just. Even if Wally’s home. Even if NW is back in the blue. It takes all three of these characters to really make me feel at home in a continuity.

Plus Barry and Hal. Otherwise I’d just permanently make my home in 90s DC comics, haha. Nope, of course they’re dead in what is otherwise the perfect place for my comic home to be.
