Fingal's Cave - a source of inspiration.
Off the west coast of Scotland, which is part of Great Britain, there is an uninhabited island called Staffa. The island of Staffa is the smallest of the Hebrides. Its area is limited to 33 hectares, and the highest point above sea level does not exceed 42 m. The entire coast of Staffa is decorated with majestic basalt columns, forming a semblance of a grand natural theater or cathedral. The island gained popularity back in 1722 after the popular British explorer Joseph Banks managed to get there. The explorer described this amazing wild piece of land in detail and colorfully and focused his attention on the singing cave, which he compared to the Louvre.
The length of Fingal's Cave is 113 m, and the width of the entrance is just over 16 meters. The walls of the cave consist of basalt columns of a hexagonal shape up to 20 meters high. They were formed in the flow of Paleocene lava, and look like straight, and somewhere curved hexagonal columns. The fascinating Fingal's Cave, the arch of which is curved like a cathedral dome, is interesting not only for its impressive scale and originality of form, but also for its unique natural melody. Due to the specificity of the cave dome, the sounds of the wind here linger for fractions of a second, giving birth to melodies that are truly impressive in their sound. In addition, the huge hall of Fingal's Cave repeatedly repeats the echoes of the sound of the surf, which creates the illusion that this entire natural cathedral creates unique music and literally sings. Another curious fact is that the sounds "emitted" by the cave can be heard at a considerable distance from it. Therefore, even just approaching the island of Staffa by boat, you can hear the unique "music of nature".
Fingal's Cave got its name from the hero of ancient Celtic legends. This is Fingal (literally meaning "white wanderer") or as he was also called Finn mac Cumhal, who was described in the 18th century by the Scottish poet and hoaxer James Macpherson. In fact, James collected many myths about this hero and published a book called "The Works of Ossian, the son of Fingal, translated from the Gaelic by James Macpherson". Many artists under the influence of Fingal's Cave felt a surge of creative energy and discovered new facets of their activities. Mendelssohn wrote the overture "Fingal's Cave". Walter Scott admitted that this place is one of the most amazing in the world. Jules Verne used the description of the cave in his books "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "The Mysterious Island". The artist J. M. W. Turner painted "Staffa, Fingal's Cave" in the same year, a little-known miracle became a tourist attraction. Pink Floyd named one of their early unreleased songs after the cave.
If you look from inside the cave, you will see the island of Iona on the horizon, where the kings of ancient Scotland are buried, including the famous Macbeth (Mac Bethad mac Findlaich).

OK, more on that boat trip I mentioned. Get ready for Columnar Basalt Sunday! (with photos actually taken on a Friday)
The Isle of Staffa's a spectacular place. I'm not sure if it's accurate to consider it the other end of the Giant's Causeway from a scientific standpoint - they're not too far apart in age, geologically speaking, but I don't think they're actually part of the same formation separated by rising sea levels, geological uplift etc - but folklorically I think it's a fair enough assessment.
We got really lucky with the weather conditions. There's a little concrete jetty that boats can pull up to, but I think it might be submerged at high tide and it's not safe to try and land on the island if the sea is too choppy. As for Fingal's Cave, if you wanted to actually go into it by water you might be able to do it with something like a sea kayak, but anything much bigger would likely get wrecked; the long, tunnel-like shape of the cave means it gets quite a high swell even if the sea outside is fairly calm.
Appropriate musical accompaniment here.

Cave Hill, Belfast
Cave Hill, or Cavehill, is a basaltic hill overlooking the city of Belfast. It forms part of the southeastern border of the Antrim Plateau. It is distinguished by its famous ‘Napoleon’s Nose’, a basaltic outcrop which resembles the profile of the famous emperor Napoleon. Cavehill is also the name of an electoral ward in Belfast. Historically it was known as Ben Madigan, which is derived from the…

somehow im JUST realizing my caves might not be plausible. fuck my entire life
#i have them in and around the rift valley#the rock there would be igneous. basalt most likely MAYBE andesite or ryolite on account of the location#caves... dont form in igneous rock. they form in sedimentary#stuff that dissolves. limestone and dolomite#my fuckign....#ill have to do some more looking into how rift valleys work exactly. what kinds of geology exist not just IN it but AROUND it#i MAY be able to still make it work. but like. what hte hell

SansNautica Drabble - Safe Space
It has been a while! But I had an idea for a new Drabble!
As always, as a Drabble it is in one go written and that is all! I am still not fully settled on the timeline so just don't worry about it :) Just assume that these mers live for a LONG time :D
Warning: Past torture.
*-----------------------------------*
Dream has some trouble to get through the secret passageway as the mer on his back whimpers and shivers.
Dream coos at the poor guy. Dream wishes he could travel this part in his large form but the tunnels just don't allow.
Dream glances around the stone at the end of the little path he followed. There is nothing around. Whcih it shouldn't be. This is Nightmare's cave after all. A large cavern which had been carved out of the dark basalt that served as the seafloor.
Dream smiles at the sleeping mer and hushes him "It is alright. You are safe now. Nightmare will keep you safe." He kept those other three safe after all.
Dream switches back to his larger form to swim the last stretch with the passager in his hands. it is much easier to carry him like this. Easier to keep him safe and comfortable that way over carrying on his back.
He nears the right area and a dark large mass appears near him "Dream! Where have you been?!"
his younger brother is mad alright.
Dream sighs as he smiles sheepish "It is fine. I am fine."
Nightmare's singular eye narrows, and accident from back when they were just little small fry, "That means you did something that we agreed you shouldn't." he glares at him.
"Oooh someone is in trouble~"
Dream glances over and sees Killer nearby. It isn't a big surprise. Nightmare's little mates at rather clingy and don't like to let Nihgtmare out of their sight. Even inside Nightmare's territory.
Dream glances around and just as he thought. Horror is near the sea floor staring up at them. Dust is in the shadows near Killer watching jsut as carefully as always.
This honestly makes it better!
Nightmare keeps glaring at him "You were messing around near those intruders weren't you?!"
Well, never say that Nightmare doens't know Dream.
Dream smiles "I am fine." he sighs sadly "She isn't... she was... captured..."
Ngihtmare frowns as he glances at him worried. No doubt feeling Dream's grief as if it were his own. Dream looks at him "I am officially the last of my kind, both mer and none..."
Nightmare frowns as he puts his arms around him in an embrace "Dream... I am sorry."
Dream leans into the hold "I had to try and help her... Yet... I still failed her." His friend.
Nightmare continues to hold him "I know that this hurts you. I am sorry this had to happen. She was lovely and kind and a good friend. You have been a good friend to her as well."
Dream sighs and admits it "I was searching for her. To see where they taken her. But I couldn't find it and it had become too large of a risk. I found one of their other nests."
Ngihtmare looks at him and waits.
Dream gets asmall smile on his face and Dream just knows it looks sheepish "I... I was wondering... I mean it is just... You are the best pick and moving him won't be a good idea..."
Ngihtmare frowns "Him?"
Dream smiles and shows his hands contents. The small cuddle mer.
Nightmare is silent for a moment before he speaks "I... I thought they..."
Drema nods "Me too. But i found him locked away. In a strange box. I managed to get him out but he hasn't fully woken up yet. He smells like nothing natural at the moment. I think they did soemthing to him to weaken him." Drema glances at his twin.
He sees the way that Nightmare takes careful note of all the details of the others. The small scars and small almost dot like wounds. The way large, much too straight, lines are all over the small near. Specifically near where they would carry their eggs.
Nightmare frowns before looking at him "I do not understand. Why not take him to Reaper?"
Dream sighs as he looks to the side "I am not sure when he will wake up. I fear he will woke up when we travel the void to get to another crater. That he panics and we get attacked by the ghost leviathans in there. Or, that he makes it all the way to the new crater, only to wake up and panic and be scared as he took him from everything he knows and doens't know anything. Or that he gets hurt or can't rest enough as we travel and he dies." Dream looks beggign at Nightmare "You know how to take care of them. You have a safe haven here. All kinds of plants from all around the crater. It is safe and has things he may recognise." and he waits.
Nightmare frowns "What if the intruders come near? What if being in a place with them nearby will cause him distress?"
Dream shakes his skull "Nightmare please... I don't have a nest here for him to protect and heal. This is your territory for a reason." He holds out the small mer to his brother.
Dream watches as Nightmare hesitates before carefully taking the other mer over. Dream watches as his brther sniffs the small being and frowns "You are correct. He truly does not smell as anything natural."
Dream nods as the other mers take curious looks at their new nest-guest. Horror mutters about going to hunt some fish for when they wake up and swims off. Dust mutters about making a nest and starts to swim off. Killer yells after him "Not just metal! Get actual plants! some mushroom tops work amazing!" Dust doens't react as he swims further away. Killer huffs and rushes after him.
Dream looks begging at his brother "Will you watch over him?"
Nightmare looks at him, then he glances back at the mer in his hands "I will watch over him. Try my best to give him a safe space to recover and heal." he looks abck at him "You will be back to bring him to a safe area later?"
Dream nods "Of course I will!" For now he will help Reaper move the large group of mers across the void. He can travel back on his own just fine but the normal sized mer doesn't have this ability.
Nightmare nods before bringing their skulls together in a gentle headbut "Please be safe."
Dream smiles "Always."
--
It is... warm? He hasn't been warm for a long time.
He is laying on something that moves and hears voices around him. It has the singsong-tilt to their conversation. That.. that is... how mers talk? They never bothered to speak like that.
That is when he notices it.
The scent.
The smell.
It is... It is everywhere!
And it smells good?!
It is none of that sterile and cleaning stuff. the scnet that follows the tools that hurt or the food and water that makes him feel weird.
It smells earthy? Like the earth deep in caverns. There is a slight scent of sulfur to it and he can't get enough. He tries to get clsoer to the scent.
He gets a sniff of his scent and shivers. It smells like that place. Like those people.
No. He wants this scent! He can't keep smelling like... like... those things! He wants this scent! It is new! It is... familiar? It is better. It is much better.
He has no real coordination. His body feels weird and he isn't sure if everything works right. he thinks his tentacles are holding unto the good smell? He isnt'sure what it is... it seems to move and it is warm. It doens't hurt however and so he tries to hold on as tightly as he can as he tries to rub that scent unto himself. Tries to claim it a bit. please.
a sound from far away. he can't quiet understand them "That little thief! Night! He is trying to mark you! He can't do that!" he... he knows that language right?
"calm down killer. It is alright." another voice? This one sounds differnet... deeper...
The voices don't matter at the moment. They have the singing in their words. that means they are mer and so they are safe. he instead focusses on trying to get his back against somekind of curve. It is nice. It feels protected. Covered.
He still wants the scent.
"But Mare!! Look!! He keeps doing that!"
"We got the nest ready... maybe there he can sleep comfortable?"
More voices. All with more singing in their speaking. He continues to rub the scent unto himself.
"I think he needs a moment."
A new voice "I agree... smells less like that weird smell now."
"That is what I think too Horror. He is distressed. This brings him comfort." some amsuement? "He isn't trying to scent me Killer. He is trying to rid himself of the smell that brings him memories of pain. Makes sure there is no claim of a harmful memory on him. I do not mind bringing him this comfort."
More mutters. More voices. he sighs as he can only smell this amazing scent. He is safe.
He lets himself sink into sleep as he listens to the sounds of other mers. sound she thought he would never hear ever again.
---
There new guest has been sleeping. At least they managed to mostly move him towards the nest.
Mostly.
The little cuddlefish seems to refuse to let go of Nightmare.
Nightmare can't help but feel amused at this tiny mortal lays in the nest. Pushing his whole skull into the nest itself to deeply inhale the scent, all while having a dead-grip on one of Nightmare's fingers.
Ngihtmare could obviously break free rather easily. But the obvious distressed and panicked chirps and whimpers that left the mer when he removed him from his hold? heartbreaking.
Now Nightmare sits nearby. resting as he lets the other hold unto his large finger for comfort. He is lucky he does not need a lot of food or magic when he is sitting still, even in his leviathan form.
This mates had come by a lot. All of them worried for their new charge and leaving fresh bedding or food nearby for the new mer.
A soft and confused hum and Nightmare focusses on the mer.
His sockets are large but open. the eye lights in them are hazed slightly as they glance around. Looking very confused and obviously sniffing. he glances at the nest and sniffs it deeply before a small purr leaves him. Small happy chirps follow.
Ngihtamre feels his excitment. his joy. Familiar. Safe. It is obvious in his energy.
Nightmare makes sure to keep his voice soft. Best try to level his volume "Hello there. How did you sleep?"
The mer blinks and looks up. Only to just stare at him.
But there is no fear. just awe.
Then the little mer spots the way he is holding tightly unto Ngihtmare's finger and lets go with a yelp. He glances at him before looking down and rubbing his hands. Nervous. Worried. Embarrassed.
Nightmare chuckles "It is all right." He softly, very softly, pets the back of the mer. Softly along the spine. Killer always told him that that helped them all relax. and it works. Shock before he feels comfort. the tense tendrils relax and start to slowly explore the nest he is seated in. He no doubt has to get used to all the textures.
Nghtmare speaks softly "I am sure a lot happened. You do not need to tell me right away. If you never wish to tell me that is alright. All i want to be sure of is that you know you are safe here. This is my home and my mates and myself happily welcome you here to rest and heal."
The other looks nervous as he glances down. More embarrassment. No doubt realising that he has been trying to scnet mark himself using scents of mated mers.
Nightmare chuckles again "It is al right. You are searching for comfort. We are happy to give it to you." more soft pets and the small mer relaxes. "Now. I will tell the others you are awake. That way we can all introduce ourselves and eat soemthing." He sees that sleepy edge to those sockets "After that. I am sure you can use more sleep."
The other met still looks, and feels, nervous but he nods. He settles back fully into the nest as he stares wishfully at the hand.
Nightmare smiles "After I am back you can hold my hand again if you want." the blush gets much worse and an embarrassed chirp exists the other.
"It is quite alright. a Lot happened to you and you wish to feel safe. I am happy I am able to provide this for you."
At least the little mer looks less nervous and less embarrassed now. Nightmare has no doubt that this mer will need some time to recover. THe fact he doens't speak yet seems able to understand him suggests that those who held him hurt him when he tried to communicate.
Nightmare will have to ease him into everything. Luckily he has three lovely mates who are always happy to help him.

The black beach of Fauskasandur is located on the south coast of Iceland, near the small town of Vik y Myrdal. This region is characterized by a rugged volcanic landscape, which is the result of millions of years of geological activity. The beach can be reached via National Road 1, known as Hringvegur, which runs around the entire country of Iceland, connecting the most important cities and tourist attractions.
The region in which Fauskasandur is located has an exceptional landscape diversity. Near the beach there are majestic cliffs, volcanic rock formations and numerous caves. One of the most impressive features of the landscape is the mountain Reynisfjall, which rises above the beach, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding area.
The black sand of the beach consists of crushed basalt, formed by volcanic eruptions. Basalt sand is extremely fine and soft, making the beach seem almost surreal. Near the beach, you can see the impressive basalt columns of Reynisdrangar, which according to legend are petrified trolls. Fauskasandur beach is also notable for its black sand and the huge monolith that towers over its shore. The almost rectangular giant rock looked out of place, protruding as a missing part of the surrounding mountain bases. With its top covered in green foliage that creeps down the rocky slopes, this natural rock formation adds a unique element to the dark coastline. Also worth mentioning is the striking contrast between the white breaks in the waves and the black sand.
Overall, Fauskasandur's unique appearance makes it an especially ideal place for photographers. Fauskasandur can be visited all year round. In the summer, when the weather is fine and the daylight hours are at their longest, visitors can enjoy long walks along the sandy shore, watching the waves crash against the dark sand under the midnight sun for 20 hours a day. Also, during the warm season, the surroundings become greener and brighter, and winter highlights the mesmerizing contrast between the white snow and black sand.

Some of my friends are cave raiders. I think the actual term is "spelunker," but that makes them sound like a 1960s British children's program, instead of folks who spend way too long going outside so that they can go inside. Still, any subculture is a potential object of hyperfocus, so I decided to tag along, just in case the latest hole in the Earth they found was unusually cool this time.
First, I should introduce my friends, so that you know who I'm talking about. Metamorphic Marie and I have been pals since university. Back then, she was in geology, and I was trying to avoid the campus police by hiding under her car. Her friend, Fissure Filipoly ("It's Italian," she said, without explaining any further or how to spell it) was big into geysers.
They needed someone to drive, being as both of them were currently under probation for stealing a big chunk of very attractive basalt from the museum. In their defence, it was just sitting there on the loading dock. Anyone could have made that mistake and come back with a Mitsubishi diesel forklift that they didn't own, then blow the fork seals trying to lift a 2000kg chunk of igneous stone into the back of a $20 U-Haul truck rental. Importantly, they didn't complain too much. In fact, they seemed thrilled by the unusual grain structure of the rust in the back seat.
When we arrived at the cave, we realized it was a big ol' tourist trap. There were a huge line of regular people waiting to go inside the grotto, and someone was even selling t-shirts up near the front. I had seen this kind of thing before. Swarms of advertising robots had invaded their most precious hobby forum and convinced them through a false consensus that a totally soft, boring, cave was in fact a hardcore pothole-phile's dream.
We left immediately, of course. Mostly because my car was dieseling the entire time out in the parking lot and someone called the fire department because they were worried it might explode. That's the problem with cave tourism these days: no willingness to take a risk.

This looks like a gorgeous home. It was built in 1997 in Oregon City, OR. 4bds, 3ba, $1.875.
A babbling brook at the front door. Ah, but the owner had a vision. Check out the inside.
The entrance has a floating staircase and 144,000 lbs. of basalt columns.
So, this looks like a water feature under the stairs, but I can't make out what's in that strip under the stairs. Looks like they decoupaged some magazine pages.
According to the description, the rocks were meticulously placed.
Mini cave to the dining area.
This doesn't appeal to my senses. A cool rock cave that leads to a bland, gray, dated dining room. Bleh.
The openings to the rooms kind of remind me of mines. In the living room there's a large stone fireplace and bring your trains, b/c there are elevated tracks hanging from the ceilings.
There's a mural in the dinette and a high open window to the kitchen, for some reason.
There are too many unnecessary stairs in this house. With all the natural elements, I don't know why they painted the family room rose.
The kitchen's nice. I like the counters. It's kind of angular, but I like the simulated brick oven.
You will notice that, for some reason, this home has lots of windows in the walls.
Here comes the train over the pool room. Reminds me of Mr. Rogers creepy ass trolley.
Is that real moss on the rocks?
This is weird. These stair railings are mission style. Look at the built-in drawer on the left and the little door. Some cool, but odd, features.
What is up with all the windows? This one in the primary bedroom has shutters. There's a lot of built-in furniture, too.
The en-suite has a glass block shower.
The basement isn't finished, but has a nice twig display.
Looks like there's a wood shop.
Large back yard with a patio, decks, and hot tub.
22.75 acres of land. This private road leads to an outbuilding.
This is beautiful. You could actually crawl inside that tree stump like some kind of hobbit.
Someone carved this tree.
This building has great potential to be a 2nd residence.
Gorgeous Oregon views.
The 22.75 acre property is gorgeous. Lots of possibilities.

Minecraft Crows Masterpost
Hello!!! I’ve compiled all of the field guides and notes that I’ve made for the Minecraft Crow AU (is it an AU now?? I guess so).
If you’re new here, this is a silly idea some friends and I came up with about what it would look like if crows were in Minecraft and specialized to live in different Minecraft environments! This is centered more around Philza and his Hardcore world/lore but it’s more about silly birds and shenanigans than it is about story.
You can still find all of this under the au tag “#minecraft crows”, but it’s easier having it all in one place rather than having to go digging for it :]
Field Guides:
End Crows
Overworld & Cliffs Crows
Deep Dark Crows
Mushroom Crows
Skeleton Crows (I’ll be giving these guys an update hopefully soon-ish)
Introduction to Nether Crows
Soul Sand Valley Crows
Nether Wastes Crows
Basalt Delta Crows
Warped Forest Crows
Crimson Forest Crows
Beach Crows
Aquatic Crows
Reef Crows
Pale Garden Crows
Tundra Crows
Lush Cave Crows
Cherry Grove Crows
Desert Crows (coming soon)
Extra Sillies:
• Bath time!
• Fancy bois dust bath

Permafrost - Any soil, subsoil, or other surficial deposit, or even bedrock, occurring in arctic, subarctic, and alpine regions at a variable depth beneath Earth's surface in which a temperature below freezing has existed continuously for a long time (from two years to tens of thousands of years).
Phreatic - Of or relating to groundwater.
Phreatophyte - A deeply rooted plant that obtains water from the water table or through the overlying capillary fringe.
Pictograph - A picture painted on a rock by primitive peoples.
Pillow lava - A general term for lavas displaying pillow structures and considered to have formed in a subaqueous environment; such lava is usually basaltic or andesitic.
Pluvial - Describes a geologic process or feature resulting from rain.
Reservoir - An artificial or natural storage place for water, such as a lake, pond, or aquifer, from which the water may be withdrawn for such purposes as irrigation, municipal water supply, or flood control.
Roundstone - Any naturally rounded rock fragment larger than a sand grain.
Schistose - Describes a rock displaying schistosity, or foliation, which imparts a silky sheen.
Scour - The powerful and concentrated clearing and digging action of flowing water, air, or ice.
Strand plain - A shore built seaward by waves and currents, extending continuously for some distance along the coast.
Tree mold - A cylindrical hollow in a lava flow formed by the envelopment of a tree by the flow, solidification of the lava in contact with the tree, and disappearance of the tree by burning and subsequent removal of the charcoal and ash. The inside of the mold preserves the surficial features of the tree.
Vitreous - Having the luster and appearance of glass.

The cave was conceived as part of the architectural structure of the garden. It is actually attached to the basalt rock. It has three floors, below in front of it is a fountain with a statue of Neptune and stone reptiles by the sculptor Bohumil Schnirch. The artificial rocks were made of high-quality bricks on cement mortar and were also plastered with cement, so they resembled stalactites. Corridors, small halls with stone seats, caves, several staircases, terraces and at the very top a viewing terrace with a triumphal gate were created here. Below was the arcade promenade. The cave has an internal system of underground passages, where ingenious ventilation and drainage shafts are hidden.

Angband Structure Headcanons
As I edit and revise some of my longer Angband world building posts I wanted to compile a collection of headcanons on the fortress itself; more can be found in my tag, in the iron hell
Angband lies in the frigid north of the Ered Engrin. It is a region of extremes. Smoking geysers, volcanic expanses and frozen taiga; ecosystems that should be incompatible but are distorted into a jagged, shifting region. The edges of its very being are frayed and there are dangers beyond the land or its occupants. The existence of the region is precarious and requires monumental power to maintain.
Most of Angband is subterranean, a combination of carved passages and alterations in the existing cave system and caverns. We know from The Children of Húrin that the mines of Angband extend far beyond the fortress. I speculate that some passages extend even beyond the Ered Engrin. These too are both natural passages and tunneled mines.
The Ered Engrin translates to iron mountains, and there are indeed deposits of iron, as well as other mineral ores in this region. Much of the thrall work in the mines of the fortress, involves collecting and working with the iron and other materials. The structure of the fortress is iron and stone, primarily basalt, onyx, marble, obsidian and granite. Its construction however did not follow the usual processes.
The fortress rose with the help of the Maiar who survived the siege upon Utumno and it rose with enchantment and song as much as thrall labor. It is constantly being added to and expanded upon, both the levels beneath the earth and jutting out from it.
At each level there are skeletons within the walls, the foundations. Some are accidental, others serve a more gruesome purpose. As I mentioned here, some of the caverns are natural though many are not. Tunnels and caves expand far beyond the area of the fortress and the plans for them are kept under extraordinary secrecy. Even many of the overseers in the mines have only a rudimentary understanding of their layout and usually only for their assigned area.
There are several underground rivers and streams, and a plethora of underground pools of varying temperatures.
Unsurprisingly there are lots of creatures that use bioluminescence. Salamanders (both earthly ones like olms or maybe even giant ones in the moist caverns and fire salamanders closer to the forges and the heart of the volcano) have lived here for ages, before the founding of the fortress.
Most creatures of these parts of Angband are non mammalian (certainly non Avian). They are adapted to life in harsh and severe environments, camouflaged, and require only small amounts of nutrients to survive. Many are in stasis for large parts of their lives. A variety of mollusks that live in the underground pools (all kinds of bivalves, gastropods, even cephalopods,)
I mentioned in my previous world building post as well as scattered throughout this blog, that the caves here are full of a variety of materials, both organic and inorganic, and some of the more accessible caverns are mined and foraged by slaves of the fortress.)
There are four upper levels in the main section and a number of smaller buildings, some of them connected to the main one via underground passages.
Very few denizens have a thorough understanding of the layout of the fortress and even fewer understand the complex ways the layout shifts and changes. Architecture and planning is one of the few areas thralls have little to no part in. Many efforts are taken to ensure the prisoners of Angband gain no understanding of the structure of the fortress, another way they are kept disoriented and suppressed, as I talked about on my time and routine post
Much of the upper levels are still built into the mountain itself but are mostly above ground. There is a throne room on the third level and a number of great halls though the Nethermost Hall where Morgoth sits and where his obsidian throne is built is underground
Temperature in the fortress varies greatly. Prisoners are often exposed to uncomfortable cold with little resources to cope with it, however the passages around the forges are the opposite. Extreme heat coupled with the prevalence of underground geysers, volcanic activity and mechanical heat is another cause of injury and discomfort to prisoners.
Anyways I left off here or I would have rambled on for far too long, I really enjoy Angband world building so please feel free to ask more!!
