Digging Up Bones (whiskey x f!reader) - chapter 3

Summary: You work for the Statesmen as the head of their medical department. It’s your job to patch up anyone who gets back wounded and to work on ways to prevent them from getting badly wounded in the first place.

Agent Whiskey, in particular, seems to be more accident-prone than the rest and he never passes up a reason to come see you, whether for real injuries or imaginary ones. The two of you form a close friendship, which slowly turns into something more.

Then a British man with a headshot wound and a fascination with butterflies shows up in your emergency room and in the events that follow you’re forced to reevaluate just about everything you thought you knew about your partner.

Chapter 3

The following three days passed in a slow fashion. Not just because Whiskey was gone but the rest of the agents seemed to be staying out of harm's way as well. It was a bit boring, but that was something Tonic had taught you not to complain about out loud since it apparently made it sound like you longed for injuries and carnage.

On the bright side, the slow days gave you, Ginger, and Tonic time to begin interviewing the agents on base for their emergency folders for the Alpha-gel.

The three of you had realized that while the gel and the nanites healed the brain perfectly fine they still needed something to counter the retrograde amnesia, which seemed to be a standard side effect. The sample of agents that had needed to use the gel was still small and so you couldn't draw too many sure conclusions from it, but every single one of them so far had suffered memory loss. It had been Tonic's idea that reminders of a past trauma might jump-start the memory again. The results had been good but guessing and digging up past traumas had been painstakingly difficult and had taken up more time than ideal. So you had collectively decided that each agent should have a file or a folder containing their very worst memory and ways it could be triggered.

On Wednesday evening, you curled up in your armchair and called Whiskey. He picked up after three rings.

“Moonshine, “ he drawled, voice sounding a little tired.

“Sorry, did I wake you?” you asked, suddenly feeling a little bad. It wasn't that late in the evening but maybe Whiskey had needed to tuck in early.

“No no, I was awake,” Whiskey assured you, “Just got home from a looong day at an art auction. I'm not sure if you've ever been but it is possibly the most boring thing I have ever done.”

“Yeah? What was so bad about it?” you asked, smiling to yourself. You would be caught dead before admitting it out loud but you had actually missed him these past few days.

Whiskey began describing his day. A soon as he began talking, his voice relaxed you. You pictured him walking around in a swanky hotel room, with a view of the big city, probably still wearing his hat. You were half convinced he even slept in that thing.

Whiskey told you about the auction and the few stuck-up people who had pretended not to understand his southern accent just to make him feel less than. Then he told you about the way he'd later wiped the smug smiles off their faces by actually bidding home the small painting they had been ogling.

“Champ might kill me for it, 'cause it cost a small fortune, but it was worth it!”

“What will you do with the painting?” you asked.

“Hm,” Whiskey said and you didn't need to see him to know that he was shrugging, “Dunno. Might hang it in my apartment. It's a beautiful painting, reminded me of someone special... Speaking of my apartment, have you finished the cake yet?”

You nodded, before remembering that he couldn't see you.

“Yes, Ginger and Tonic helped me eat the rest of it.”

You had been over to Whiskey's apartment the day after he'd left. When you'd gotten to work, his key had been in a white envelope on your desk and you hadn't been able to keep your curiosity at bay for longer than a workday.

The apartment hadn't been quite what you thought Whiskey's home would look like. It had been much neater and cleaner than you had expected, for starters. You had expected more of a bachelor pad but Whiskey's apartment was quite nice. It looked lived in but not messy. Each thing seemed to have its own designated spot. As you had walked around the living room towards the kitchen you had taken in the big, comfortable-looking couch and multi-colored knitted blanket that looked like it was homemade.

There had been a couple of books on art history resting on the wooden coffee table. You had stopped, slightly in awe, in front of the big bookshelves that covered a whole wall of the room. You'd never pictured Whiskey to be the reading type, but here was clear proof otherwise. You had scanned the titles of the books and the exceptionally wide array of subjects made you suspect that a lot of these had been read for previous missions. But there had been a whole shelf of fiction too and you smiled a little as you noted that a lot of them seemed to be old western classics.

You had found the cake in the fridge in the equally clean kitchen. The cake had been in a plastic container and Whiskey had stuck a post-it note with a smiley on the lid.

“I liked your bookshelf. And I borrowed a book from you,“ you confessed over the phone and Whiskey chuckled in response.

“Is that so? Which one, if I may ask, was it that caught your fancy?”

“Lonesome Dove.”

“Ah, a classic! Didn't have you pegged as a western girl, Moonshine.”

“I'm not sure if I am, I've never read any. But you had a lot of them and I thought...” You cut yourself off, glancing over at the book on your bed, “You had a book on human anatomy as well that looked interesting and one on make-shift medical treatment when you don't have access to a hospital. I didn't take those, though. It felt wrong to take so many books without asking...”

Whiskey chuckled again and the sound did weird things to your insides, or maybe it was the nerves of having just admitted to raiding his bookshelf.

“Darlin', if it makes you happy, you are more than welcome to help yourself to any book in that apartment”

“Really? But what if it's a book that you suddenly need?”

“Then I'll know perfectly well where to find it.”

You couldn't really argue with that logic, didn't really want to either because the prospect of getting to read all those books almost made you giddy.

“So besides ogling my books, what else have you been up to while I've been gone?” Whiskey asked and you proceeded to tell him about the work with the Trauma Folders, which Tonic so affectionately called them.

“You still haven't submitted yours either, by the way,” you told him. Whiskey didn't immediately answer. The line was dead silent for a few seconds and just when you were about to ask if he was still there, he cleared his throat.

“Yeah, I know. I promise to get right on that as soon as I'm back, okay?” He sounded a little odd and your brow furrowed slightly. Whiskey cleared his throat again.

“Look, darlin', I'm pretty dead on my feet right now and as lovely as your voice is to listen to, I think unfortunately we gotta hang up before I start snoring on you.”

“Oh, of course! Sorry, I've talked too much.”

“Hardly,” Whiskey replied and his voice was warm and soft again, which eased the nervous knots that had begun forming in your stomach at his abrupt attempt to end the call. Usually, that was your role to try and say goodnight and his to try and linger. “I cherish every word, which is why I prefer to be awake for them. Call me tomorrow again?”

“Sure. Good night, Whiskey.”

“Good night, darlin'”

If the previous days had been slow, the following day was anything but, at least when the afternoon rolled around.

Ginger had called you about some very strange low-frequency readings coming from a church nearby in Kentucky. She told you that she and Tequila were gonna go check it out but that you should be on standby, just in case.

You told her to be careful. Ginger was excellent at her job but she was also one of your closest friends and you couldn't help but worry.

After you'd ended the call, you immediately set about preparing the emergency room and double-checking to make sure everything was there. Seeing as neither of you knew what the strange readings had been about, it was difficult to prepare for every possible scenario, and while you knew that the health effects of exposure to extremely low frequencies were being discussed in the medical community, no one knew exactly what the effects were.

It seemed like a lifetime had passed before Ginder called you again. You heard the sound of the helicopter in the background. She told you that they'd be there in thirty and that they were bringing someone in with a headshot.

“I'll get the chamber ready for him!” you told her

Thirty minutes later, on the dot, you watched as the helicopter landed and Tequila emerged, carrying a man in a suit. The man's face was obscured by the balloon containing the Alpha-gel but his clothes looked expensive.

“Entry point?” you yelled, over the sound of the helicopter as you waved for Tequila and Ginger to hurry inside.

“Straight through the left eye,” Ginger replied and you winced. The left temporal lobe would be damaged, for sure, maybe part of the occipital one too. You were confident that the nanites would be able to rebuild the brain matter but with the temporal lobe damaged you worried that the memory loss might be even more extensive than what you'd seen before and you wondered if it would affect his speech.

“Exit point or is the bullet still in there?” you asked.

“The bullet went all the way through as far as I could tell. Not sure what he was shot with though so we'll have to scan to make sure there's nothing left in there.”

Said and done. When you got down to the medical rooms you first put the man through a thorough scan of his skull. Just like Ginger suspected, the bullet had gone straight through and it luckily hadn't left anything but damaged tissue in its wake. Tequila helped move him over to the nanite chamber. Carefully, you removed the Alpha-gel balloon and quickly closed the chamber around his head.

“What happened?” you asked as you sat down in front of the computer and began tapping away at the keyboard, starting the machine and readying it for the healing and rebuilding process.

“We have no idea,” Ginger said. “We found him like this outside the church, no sign of who had shot him. Inside the church, however...”

“What?” you asked.

“Inside was a total fuckin' bloodbath,” Tequila supplied, “Whole congregation just...slaughtered.”

You looked over at the strange man.

“You think he did it?”

Both Ginger and Tequila shrugged.

“We don't know. But he's got blood on him that isn't his own and there was no gun in his hand so he clearly didn't shoot himself, which means someone got away from that Church alive.” Ginger reasoned, “And there's one more thing..”

She pulled a pair of glasses from the pocket of her jacket. The left glass was shattered.

“He was wearing these. These aren't normal glasses, which means he's not a civilian. And his watch... he's some sort of intelligence. I'll dig around and see if I can find out whom he belongs to.”

You called Whiskey again that evening. He sounded more awake today but you could practically hear the frown on his face when you told him about your strange new guest. He was not happy.

“He's an agent?” he asked.

“We think so. Ginger is running some tests on his glasses and his watch to see what we can figure out but so far we have no idea whom he's working for. So we just have to wait for him to wake up and see how much he remembers.”

“I don't like this,” Whiskey stated. “Not one bit. If he's intelligence, he's dangerous, Moonshine. You shouldn't be alone with him, not under any circumstances!”

“I won't,” you reassured him while rolling your eyes. “Agent Tequila also has an over-protective streak and has, therefore, put himself on guard duty until further notice. I've had him looking over my shoulder all evening.”

You had found it somewhat annoying but Whiskey had instantly calmed down upon hearing that bit of information. He told you to promise to listen to Tequila on this, which you reluctantly did. You didn't tell Whiskey that if the arrangement continued, you would have to come to some sort of agreement with Tequila on how close was close enough for protection. You couldn't have him reading over your shoulder all day long or you'd go stir crazy.

Whiskey continued to ask you a bunch of questions about the strange man and you couldn't answer a single one. He asked you about the signal too and you couldn't give him any answers to that either. It was all Ginger's area of expertise and you told him as much.

“Sorry, darlin', just wanna make sure my favorite girl is safe until I get back.”

Whiskey's words made you smile stupidly, despite the slightly patronizing undertone of them. You would like to think you knew how to take care of yourself, especially around your patients. But you did enjoy it when Whiskey called you his favorite. No one else had called you their favorite before.

After a few more minutes of chit-chat, you both said good night.

The next day, your patient woke up.

It had been decided the day before that Tonic and Tequila would be the first ones to greet him. Tequila because of the whole bodyguard business and Tonic because he was by far the one who had the most experience with calming people in shock and panic. You had only sulked a little when you'd sat down the desk on the other side of the one-way mirror showing you the stranger's cell. You turned on the cameras in the other room to record the interaction before leaning forward over the desk to watch.

As anticipated, the man was more than a little freaked out by waking up in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar faces around him.

“Where am I? Who are you?” he immediately asked and you raised your eyebrows as you noted his British accent. The stranger tried to scramble off the bed where he'd been lying. Tequila took a step forward but Tonic quickly held up a hand to stop him.

“You are in a hospital,” Tonic told the frightened man and gave him a calm smile, “My name is To...Tom.”

“A hospital? What happened?” the stranger asked.

“We were hoping you would be able to tell us. You were in some sort of accident and when we found you, you were unconscious.”

Unconscious... that was definitely an understatement to describing having had one's brains blown out through the back of their head.

“Do you remember anything of what happened?” Tonic continued.

The British man looked around the room with wild eyes but he was already calming down a bit. While you were a bit jealous that Tonic, or Tom apparently, was the first one to get to talk to your new patient you had to admit that it was a privilege to get to watch him work. Tonic continued talking to the man and answering his questions by saying just enough to calm him but not enough to confuse him.

You found out that his name was Harry, but he couldn't remember his last name. He was from England and he thought he was 23 years old, which he most definitely was not. You caught Tonic and Tequila exchange a look as Harry told them his age. If Harry couldn't remember anything beyond his 23rd year then you estimated that he had forgotten more than half of his life. And since he wasn't one of your agents, you had no idea how to bring those memories back again...

Tonic and Harry spoke for a while longer and Tonic told him about his injuries. He also told harry about the memory loss. Harry didn't believe him until Tonic guided him over to the one-way mirror separating you from them and let Harry have a look at himself. You stood on the other side of the mirror and could watch as realization dawned on Harry. His breathing immediately sped up again and he was beginning to panic.

“Harry,” Tonic said calmly, “Harry, I'm gonna need you to breathe slower with me, okay? We've seen this kind of memory loss before and we will do our very best to help you recover the memories you can't remember right now”

“Think of it as one hell of a hangover,” Tequila supplied and Harry gave him an incredulous look.

“Hangover?” he asked in a weak voice “I look old enough to be a grandfather and I don't remember any of it... I don't think anyone has ever been drunk enough for that kind of hangover.

Tonic and Tequila handled the whole ordeal in a way that made you proud to call yourself their colleague and they stayed with Harry for most of the day, talking and explaining. Harry listened patiently and you had to give him credit for taking the situation a whole lot better than some of the Statesmen who had gone through the same thing. He was scared and worried, sure, but he managed to keep his panic in check and asked Tonic a whole bunch of relevant questions.

You wished you could have stayed and watched all afternoon but eventually you had to go back to your own office and begin typing up your report.

You had barely gotten two paragraphs in when your phone started ringing.

“Moonshine?” Whiskey said as soon as you picked up and you could immediately tell that something was wrong. He sounded scared. There were car horns blaring and loud crashes in the background.

“Yes. Whiskey what's...”

Whiskey cut you off before you could finish your question.

“Where are you?” he asked and when it took you a fraction of a second too long to answer, he repeated the question, “Moonshine! Where are you?”

“I'm in the office. Whiskey what's wrong?”

“Good! Whatever you do, stay where you are! There's something in the air! People are killing each other!”

“What?” Before you could say anything further, your door burst open and you screamed from surprise.

“Moonshine!” Whiskey yelled, panicked, as Ginger stormed into the office and pushed you out of her way to get to the computer. She began tapping on the keyboard and you watched as she pulled up live feeds from several cameras around the country. Your mouth fell open as you watched the chaos that filled the screen.

“MOONSHINE!” Whiskey yelled again and you realized you hadn't answered him.

“I'm fine!” you quickly assured him and you heard him exhale loudly. “Ginger just showed up. What the hell is going on?” The last question was aimed at them both. The quality of the feeds wasn't the best but there was no mistaking what was going on. All over the country, people were killing each other.

“The fuck if I know,” Whiskey said at the same time as Ginger supplied the slightly more helpful “It's the same signal! It's the same low frequency as we picked up from the church. But this is all over...well the world”

She turned and looked at the phone in your hand.

“Is that agent Whiskey?”

You nodded but then froze as you heard a banging noise on the other end of the line, which sounded much closer than the previous ones. You heard Whiskey curse.

“Whiskey?”

There was another crash and he cursed again.

“I'm sorry, darlin', I seem to have a visitor. I gotta go.”

“Whiskey,” you begged and you heard your own voice break as you spoke his name.

“Don't worry, sweetheart. I'll deal with this and then I promise I'll come right home to you. You just promise to stay inside and stay safe, okay?”

What about you? you wanted to ask, but Whiskey had already hung up.

“He'll be fine,” said Ginger, who must have seen the expression change on your face. You nodded. She was right. Whiskey was an excellent agent. He would be fine.

He would be fine. You managed to convince yourself of that up until about an hour later when the office phone called. You were too busy clutching your own phone, waiting for Whiskey to call back, to pay any attention to the other phone so Ginger picked it up and answered. She exchanged a few cryptic comments with the person on the other line before ending the call by saying:

“We'll be ready for him.”

After she'd hung up the phone she turned towards you.

“Whiskey's on his way back. He's been stabbed but according to the pilot, he's stable. They're flying him back now. “

WAIT. I'm late to the party but I just remembered all those anons were sending in "why I send you asks" and their reasons and I actually really want to participate, so I hope you will accept late applications?

The reason I send you so many asks is because you've just...built such a nice feeling that anything can be discussed, and it's never too niche or cringy or boring, and that's really relieving and amazing.

I'm sure you (along with many others) have realized by now, but I suffer from....really bad anxiety, both social anxiety and just in general, and it very often gets in the way of my life. Because of this and past experiences, I'm always very scared and hesitant to talk about my interests and my thoughts on anything.

But every time I've sent you an ask, even if it was, in retrospect, probably really annoying to read through the one hundred "sorry"s and "my bad"s, you've always been nothing but kind and interested in my ideas, and that was just...so surprising. Because I never really knew anyone who was willing to talk about anything, and it was just...really amazing to meet someone who was! Especially because I love and am interested in so many different things and kind of need someone to bounce ideas at. And it was really cool to see someone that was unashamed of their own interests and thoughts, but didn't make others feel bad for having different ideas.

Every time I send you an ask, you always have something interesting to say back. Something I hadn't thought of or considered, or a query that would make me rethink my own theories, or just a very well-thought-out answer to a question. I remember sending in tons of asks about the wings AU before it was released, and writing those was probably the highlight of my day, because I knew you'd take them and run with the ideas, and do your best to match my energy, and I was really grateful for that. And you were always willing to dig deeper, to think "but what if there was more?" and that's just...incredible! I don't have any other word for it!

I love sending you asks because you don't dismiss an idea or deem it as stupid, and you're just...such a kind and wonderful person that can make even the most obscure subject infinitely more interesting than before, and you never fail to make me consider things again, to expand my thoughts and views, and I'm really grateful for that.

So, because it should definitely be said by now, thank you!

And, well, that's why I love sending you asks :]

there is no timeline so there's no way to be late! and I'm answering this a few days after you sent this, so if you believe yourself to be late then we can both be late together :D. you are fully welcome to participate if you want to (which you said you did)! it was mostly just a random question I had because i'm just as analytical with myself as I am with keeper, and knowing how other perceive and think of me is helpful for that--and I was curious about how i'd aquired so many asks so quickly, and then you all just turned it into complimenting quil hours for some reason !! (but on to your ask before I get even more distracted)

this means so much to me--specifically your use of "built" because I do try pretty hard to maintain a positive atmosphere and welcome everyone in and treat everyone with the same attention. it didn't just fall into place, i try to be encouraging to everyone and support all the amazing work--art, writing, ideas, etc--I see from people. (note: i've been wanting to do a thing where I ask for fic/art/other recommendations from others (can be friends or their own) so i can go through and reblog a bunch of them with comments and the like, I just want to get through more of my asks before I start something like that). But you're right--nothing is too niche! there's so many details in the story it's impossible for one person to notice anything, so people bringing up the obscure and their own thoughts makes the story richer and more fleshed out for everyone else! and i think it's really cool to just see what other people focus on (like I said, my analysis isn't limited to characters, but I'm not like dissecting you all to understand each of you in a creepy way or anything. I just like to get a better sense of someone so I can respond in a way more tailored to them when we interact)

anxiety can really suck, so as someone who also has anxiety i am giving you a comforting hug if you'd like one. it genuinely impacts everything you do and think about, rewriting how you experience life. a single, inconsequential experience to someone else can literally change major aspects of how we think, which makes interactions so scary sometimes. i remember things people said years ago and still base my actions around them, but those people have absolutely no recollection of ever saying it, but just the fear of having done something wrong once permanently altered my thinking. (this is not to make this about me, I'm just trying to show I understand by sharing an experience of my own).

reading through all your "i'm sorry"s and "my bad"s wasn't annoying and never will be. you have never had anything to apologize for, and I know that sometimes you feel you need to enter a conversation and first apologize for being there, but I'm thrilled to have you here and always love seeing you in my inbox. I don't know how to articulate this properly, but I'm going to try. i saw your apologies and your apprehension as...a puzzle? that's absolutely not the right word but I can't think of the right one so please let me explain (I don't mean to imply you're like something to be solved or a problem in any way. words can be difficult and I'm trying to describe something very intangible rn, so I hope this doesn't sound bad). I didn't see it as annoying (you're never annoying), I saw it like it was something to work through, and while it's not my job or anything to help other's with their personal problems, it was like if I could just provide one space where I could encourage you (not just you, but anyone) as a friend to try shifting your language and start thinking of yourself more positively, then I wanted to give that.

because I am interested in your ideas! and I want to be kind and welcoming to you! but I also want you to be kind to yourself, so any impact I've had to give anyone a safer, less scary space is really cool. I don't know if that made sense, but I'm not trying to talk down to you or anything or be like I'm this high and mighty figure harboring lost souls or something, just that connection is important and I like being there for people. kinda worried that sounded bad because it feels worded strange but I'm trying to reciprocate and say i appreciate you and am happy to talk about anything!

i love bouncing ideas back and forth and you are more than welcome to say anything and everything you're thinking about. talking to you is always an absolutely joy and I get so excited when you send me an ask and when you're reading my response, because it often feels like this like...buzz? like we're just vibing on this frequency and it makes it so much fun to throw ideas back and forth and just listen to each other talk. i am very glad to have surprised you and met you! I don't know a lot of people like myself either, so having someone like you interact with me and just go all out on these little things and what we personally like about different parts of the so much fun. a lot of the other people I know irl feel like they just scratch the surface, they say things just to get credit for it and to appear like they know what they're talking about while ignoring all these other things that have such an impact, so it's amazing to have found someone else who looks at everything and anything like I do. my brain really is "a little bit of everything all of the time" so knowing you have so many different interests too is really cool. i am giving you an internet high five and pretending you aren't so far away.

I spent so much of my life being quiet when I had so many thoughts, so now that I have this kind of outlet I just! want to say everything I can! i want to look at everything from every perspective possible! the world is a huge collection of things tied together and I love following the strings to find the connected pieces! but I think that's a way of approaching the world not a lot of people share (I could be wrong), so it's really cool to hear you think my thought process is interesting!! my brain is practically composed entirely of questions. any subject at any time of the day and nearly all of my thoughts are just wanting to know more and trying to understand things, so having that opportunity to ask further questions and just learn things (about what other's thing, how things work, etc) is so much fun. you might've seen me ask some questions of other's in a few of the asks I answer, but those barely scratch the surface of just how many I have. my handle is in_quil_sitive (inquisitve) on nearly every social media platform (except for this one) for a reason.

I remember some of your asks from before the wings au was published, too. those were absolutely incredible, and I got a rush of excitement every time I saw you sent another. those were the the highlight of my week, too!! your enthusiasm and excitement for something I hadn't even posted yet gave me so much motivation to continue and you helped me think through so many future ideas and consider things from new perspectives. i know i specifically wrote that you inspired one chapter in the notes, but you've had an impact on every single chapter of this story/ it wouldn't be what it is without you, and I mean that with complete sincerity. you were the one who made me think "what if there was more" so I could make this au even better and work towards something bigger. I just have so many thoughts about everything all of the time, I can't go more than a few minutes without being distracted by a different train of thought, but knowing there was someone who would want to hear all the weird, disjointed ideas i'd strung together and composed into a more cohesive format was so cool. there's just so much to think about!!

I probably sound repetitive at this point but I love answering your asks because you're so receptive to the way i say things and it's like you're actually listening and want to hear what I specifically have to say, not just the general ideas. you want to know my unique, personalized opinions and perspectives and don't just dismiss them when they're not what you expect to hear or aren't generic. you're incredibly kind, too, I hope you know. I love the description of how I can "make even the most obscure subject infinitely more interesting than before." that is such a meaningful compliment to me. I just keep thinking about this line over and over again and it just...it really means a lot. because you're saying it's me that interests you and not just what I talk about. I could talk about anything and you'd still want to interact with me and that's so fucking nice. I hope you know the same goes for you. we can challenge each other's thinking together and make things even deeper and more complex before together <33.

I do this thing sometimes where I film myself to later observe my behaviors in the middle of intense emotions to understand myself better (back to that whole analysis thing again), but it's not just negative things, it's also when I'm really excited or pleased with something and jumping around and stimming and all that, and some of those are from when I interact with you. that might sound a little weird but I mean it positively, as in talking with you makes me ecstatic.

As mentioned in the 'Industry Research' section of this blog, it isn't just the technical skills future employers will want to see. They want to see how your passion and art is fuelled also!! Sound design is more than just a series of sticking sounds together in a DAW. It's all about creating the other half of the story!

Core values & necessary skills

In my blog's branding section, I spoke about core values and those I deem to be top of my list. Core values make us who we are. It's what drives ambition and our creative thought process.

Accountability is high on my list of values/skills. Being accountable for the amount and quality of work we do is crucial. Often we dismiss our failures because we won't hold ourselves responsible. Though, at the other end of the spectrum, we more often than not, sing our praises. So holding yourself accountable as an individual or team unit, is just as crucial during the failures as it is during the success.

Whilst, teamwork is a very cliché term used with regards to employability, it remains a massive part of my core skill set. Being surrounded by team members is an excellent way to find a creative place in a project. I can then take those ideas and present for peer review. Having people to work with not only makes producing a big project easier. Still, it gives me a tremendous sense of satisfaction that like-minded creatives have come together to create something incredible.

Passion is a big part of what drives me. Music and composing is such a wonderful expression of artistry for me. Not just the music side of things, but I then took my love for music (and audio in general) regarding sound design. I began exploring the more intricate realms of audio. Each day my passions grow, but I NEVER wonder why I love what I do, not even on my worst days.

Respect is a skill I'm continually re-evaluating. I think it is undeniably essential to respect other people and their creative differences.

Continuous improvement is about always finding new and exciting ways to work. Technology changes exceptionally fast these days, and in audio production, the skillsets also have to change. Keeping up to date on industry techniques, skills, and methods will ensure I stay relevant to the expected work output. There are some general skills required to be a sound designer composer within the creative industries. However, some more specific skills are necessary if specialising in TV & film or games.

Basic skills:

Creating, maintaining and backing of own original sound libraries.

Digital signal processing

Producing sound maps/ storyboards from scripts.

Mixing inside Digital Audio Workstations

Work along with side other members of the audio post-production team

Sector-specific skills

TV/Film and Game skills:

Compose and engineer music

improving sound quality

Spot, arrange and edit audio into video, or other mediums.

Use visual logic systems such as Max MSP.

Use of game implementation systems, i.e. Unity, Unreal, Fmod and Wwise.

Layering sounds to have a desired/or specific effect.

I have begun creating and collating my sound libraries last year. At first, I had incredibly long titles for samples and one-shots but started finding it hard to achieve all of the sounds (both RAW and edited). That was until I came across the word 'metadata'. Having a logical and easily navigable database of sounds is crucial to making my workflow more efficiently. I'm starting my journey into audio metadata with a free app called Soundly. Soundly offers a free-plan with up to 2500 local file storage and access to free cloud-based sound effects. To start, this will be ideal, but I would like to look at other plans that will include Cloud storage backup in the future. Currently I backup all of my libraries onto an 8TB desktop drive, another external HDD and my google drive.

What is digital sound processing or DSP, you may ask? Digital sound processing is where audio converts from analogue to digital signal. A series of mathematical calculations are then applied before the signal returns to analogue before final output. As a producer/composer/sound designer, I use various plugins to manipulate the sounds inside my Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Plugins come in many forms. VST is the most common form of an audio plugin and is Microsoft's Virtual Studio Technology. Avid uses its plugin file system called AAX (Avid Audio Extension), and Apple uses its own AU system (Audio Unit).

Below is a small list of plugins that I utilise during my time working on projects in the studio:

Facebook 360 Spatial Workstation AAX plugin (Pro Tools)

I use Logic Pro X as my music production/composition DAW of choice. I believe this offers a great deal of flexibility to music composers alike.

In contrast, I use Pro Tools as my post-production tool. Here, I produce final mixes of songs before proceeding onto the mastering process, which I also use Pro Tools. Pro Tools is also my DAW of choice for sound design work, purely because of its sheer power in dealing with raw audio.

During a mix-down phase of a musical composition, you should hear each instrument with clarity. Musical instruments all operate at different frequencies within the frequency spectrum. By respecting the base frequencies at which a particular instrument's audio outputs, I can make the final asset as audibly clear as possible, for maximum viewing pleasure.

When working on sound design projects, I will often improve the sound of my source audio captured when out in the field inside iZotope RX8. Here I will remove clicks, hissing, background hum, de-verb, and even isolate parts of dialogue to ensure that audio is optimal for project usage.

I do love writing music and producing sound effects! I like to create work for TV & film, animations, interactive media, audiobooks and more. I import video assets into my DAW (Logic Pro X or Pro Tools depending on projects final output).

This way, I have a visual in front of me from which to work. You can then lock the audio event in position with the video using SMTPE time code. This way, it keeps my music and sound effects in the exact place they need to be, without fear of being moved or adjusted in any way. Just don't forget to lock the positions!!

Max MSP is a powerful visual logic system for generating sound design and producing electronic music. I am new to this software and am learning new and exciting ways to integrate MAX MSP into my DAW workflow. I decided to explore the unique and intricate methods of composing music and designing sound for various media forms.

Examples of work

The best way to showcase both technical and artistic skill is quite obviously through social media platforms. Instagram has become a staple platform where businesses and creatives promote themselves and their craft. There are other platforms such as YouTube, SoundCloud, Twitter, Facebook (and don't forget LinkedIn!) to name but a few. With all of these beautiful places to promote me and work, I must consider the type of content I post to maintain maximum engagement with audiences and potential employers.

After many years of making and producing music at home, my interest in exploring the world of all thing's audio continued to grow. I purchased myself a simple, cheap portable recorder, some dirt-cheap microphones, and just went out and explored the world around me. At first, I made some novice mistakes in just aimlessly pointing and pressing the record button. Still, I soon learned that I merely heard things playback after recording. I never stopped to listen before I hit that big red button!

Slowly I got better (still, a long way to go), but most importantly I absolutely loved the process, and still am! I took great inspiration from reading the sound Effects Bible by Ric Viers (https://www.ricviers.com/sound-effects-bible) and Field Recording from Research To Wrap by Paul Virostek (https://www.creativefieldrecording.com/downloads/field-recording-from-research-to-wrap/). Both explain in great detail about how to get set up, get a recording and start collating my sound libraries.

With that said here's one of my first sound design projects. By this time, I had upgraded my audio recorder and had a few new microphone additions. Jez Riley French's D-Series Hydrophone, C – Series Contact mic, and his electromagnetic coil mic. Again, it was a learning curve starting with these new bits of kit, but I am genuinely pleased with how much this project turned out.

Without further ado, I present to you a lovely piece of animation by Polynoid, titled Mem. I create a gorgeous stereo cacophony of delicate sounds with Sci-Fi and electronic elements that lend itself well to the animation's energy.

Ghosts Caught on Audio: The 7 Recordings and EVPs You Have to Listen To

It was only a week ago that I got a question from fellow tumblr user, @madphantom.

@madphantom told me that they picked up some paranormal activity whilst recording audio for a creative project.

The story goes that when they recorded audio for an actor who had died, things started to get weird.

When they replayed the audio, they realised that they had picked up a lot of static, and compared it to the iconic soundtrack from Slenderman’s notorious horror games.

Yikes.

And it was this story that reminded me of one my favourite horror film scenes, basically, ever from one of my favourite horror films, basically, ever.

There’s this scene from the film The Conjuring (which is based on the true case of the haunting of the Perron family) where they record the story of the haunting from one of the victims – the mother of the family.

And upon replaying the audio, they realised it didn’t actually record her voice.

After discussion of some key plot points, the recorder turned itself on and produced some seriously terrifying haunted noises.

Now, this didn’t actually happen as far as I can tell.

But it got me thinking: has paranormal activity ever been caught on audio?

There’s enough faked videos clogging up the youtube trending page to tell you we all love a bit of the supernatural making its online debut, and the same goes for audio recordings.

Go ahead, try ‘creepy audio recordings of the paranormal’ into youtube.

And so I was convinced that essentially, I had come to a dead end.

(Pun unintended.)

But then I remembered something:

Audio recordings are actually really fucking important when it comes to recording and investigating paranormal activity.

Methods like EVP and the use of Spirit Boxes have ruled the domain of ghost hunting since the late 20th century, and represent our desperate search for evidence of life after death.

And so, in today’s edition of The Paranormal Periodical we are going to be discussing the theories and histories behind EVP and Spirit boxes, and the 7 audio recordings of paranormal activity that you have to listen to.

So, what is EVP?

EVP – or electronic voice phenomena – are recorded sounds that have been identified as coming from spirits.

It was popularised by some bloke called Konstantins Raudive, and he himself recorded some seriously amazing EVPs.

He even claimed that he recorded political figures including Hitler and Churchill. Fancy a listen? Find a link to this recording is later in this post.

Now EVP is defined by Raudive as a short word or phrase from beyond the grave.

So no, you won’t be able to squeeze a 3000 word opinion piece from a historical figure of your choosing, I’m afraid.

But the conversation about paranormal audio recordings has been present ever since digital goods hit the shops. Just think of all those blurry photos supposedly evident of the undead!

In fact, it was actually a photographer who tried to capture the first audio recordings.

Attila von Szalay’s first recordings in 1956 apparently caught spirits saying some seriously scary stuff:

“Hot dog, art!...Merry Christmas and happy new year to you all”.

3 years later a swedish guy was recording some bird song.

Each to their own, I guess.

Anyway, he replayed the bird song, and he realised that he had captured evidence of the supernatural.

He made out his dead father’s voice, and even heard the voice of his dead wife. And she was calling his name!

A few recordings later and he picked up a message from another deceased relative, his mother.

Now according to theory, there are 3 types of EVP.

Basically, classification A is a clear voice, B is distinct but requires close listening, and C is a faint whispering.

EVP training is even required for ghost hunting in order to develop the ability to hear messages from the dead. Clearly this is serious business for fellow paranormal believers.

What’s a spirit box?

EVP’s require a digital audio recording.

Spirit boxes on the other hand allow spirits to use radio frequencies to talk to people that are actually alive.

Supposedly the ghosts can manipulate the energy of audio fragments to form words and phrases not unlike those heard in EVPs.

And the great thing about spirit or ghost boxes is that you don’t just listen to the dead – you can actually talk to them!

Normal practice involves asking questions and listening out for rather abstract responses. But the fact is this is one of the most famous and trusted methods of communicating with those beyond the grave.

The first official ghost box was created in the 1990s, and the inventor – Frank Sumpton – created it based off of EVP and an article he read on spirit communication.

But if you aren’t convinced by the ghost box, what about the Spiricom?

Invented in 1980, William O Neil created a device that could actually hold a conversation between a dead and a not so dead person.

Unfortunately – and to no surprise – no one actually reproduced the results O’Neil claimed he had.

Did you know that in 1979 parapyschologist Dr. Rogo claimed that you could get phonecalls from those that had passed away? People frequently report receiving a short one-way call from deceased relatives, and it has even been considered a phenomenon.

So, you’ve heard the theories.

But are you ready for the evidence?

Here are the 7 spookiest audio recordings of spirits:

#1 - The exorcism of Anneliese Michel

This is a recording from possibly the most famous case of possession of modern times.

Heck, it was even given it’s own film to document the case, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

But if you haven’t heard the tale yourself, the story basically goes like this:

A devout catholic girl starts exhibiting strange behaviour.

From unexplained seizures to claims of hearing multiple ‘evil’ voices, she was eventually deemed possessed.

And whilst the many recordings of her exorcisms aren’t EVP or recordings from a Spirit Box session, this is firm evidence of how important recordings were to investigating evidence of the paranormal.

#2 - Next up is the Enfield Haunting

Now this case is interesting because it was largely considered a hoax evoked by 2 young girls.

Investigators used tape recorders and some EVP to assess the potential nature of the haunting.

What’s interesting here is that the debate largely centres around the supposedly possessed voice of Janet – the main girl involved – caught on tape.

Sceptics claimed it was produced by false vocal chords, and that we can all put on a creepy and different voice when we want.

But it was by analysing the actual vocabulary used, they could claim it was similar to that of a child and not a potential ghost or demon, and often evoked mannerisms similar to that of Janet.

Even on national TV, Janet waved her hand to get attention, put it in front of her mouth, and a strange voice was produced supposedly from nowhere.

Hmm.

#3 - The Haunting of an Unnamed New York Hotel

In early 2007, the Central New York Ghost Hunters were asked to investigate a hotel in New York.

Why was it unnamed? The hotel in question asked for the name to be withheld from public discussions for the obvious reasons that their living visitor numbers would fall.

The investigator’s claim this investigation was one of their most active, which is not a surprise considering its long history.

(Unfortunately, this is hard to trace for this post as I do not have the name of the hotel…)

Anyway, the main activity they picked up was an EVP carried out by someone sitting on a staircase.

You can clearly hear a scuffle between two people as a woman asks someone to get off her, a rather sleazy ‘hello baby’, and even the ring of an old fashioned cuckoo clock.

#4 - The Raudive Recordings

I’ve already mentioned Raudive and his innovatory practice, and thanks to his interest in EVP, he has created an incredible collection of evidence of the paranormal.

In total, he has 72,000 recordings of the paranormal talking.

Holy shit.

And this collection even contains the supposed voices of Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini and Churchill!

He claims Hitler spoke to him in Raudive’s mother tongue of Latvian which Hitler barely learnt while he was alive.

And what did Hitler say?

‘you are a girl here, or else you are thrown out’.

Yeah, I don’t know what that means either…

And what did Churchill say? Well, interpreters don’t really care much for what was said, but how he said it.

It apparently was a convincing EVP as it sounded like him, and was thus supported by many as evidence of the paranormal.

Some of these recordings were even conducted in laboratories to ensure accuracy, and Raudive invited members of the public to listen and interpret the recordings he collected.

#5 - The Glen Tavern Inn

This tavern stretches back to the prohibition era, and its speakeasy history – which included being a brothel and gambling parlour – have fuelled its rumours of supernatural activity.

Whether its murdered prostitutes, or fights between budding gamblers, it does have some basis to the claims.

And these stories were confirmed by an EVP taken.

#6 - The Eerie Mansion Basement

Now I’ve never heard of this mansion and its murderous past, and I’m kinda glad I hadn’t.

Rumour has it that this was once home to Bill Ely.

And it was here that he killed countless women.

But it was when the American Ghost Hunters took an EVP, they heard some paranormal activity more chilling than the stories that haunt this home.

The investigator’s recorded what sounded like the whimpers of a small girl.

And when they got close to what they believed what the source of the sounds?

A man in a gruff voice told them to ‘Leave that girl alone’.

Yikes.

#7 - The Queen Mary (the boat, not the person)

The Queen Mary is deemed one of the most haunted ships in the world.

And it was all quite a recent discovery.

Only in 2008 did Time magazine claim it was once of the most haunted places, but many other people have made similar claims.

For example, suite room B-340 is one such spot which is considered ‘notoriously haunted’, and a stateroom is haunted by a murder victim.

But the location we are most concerned with here is the first class area.

And an EVP taken here recorded a woman calling for help in an area frequented by many ghost women and children.

(SU:F Theory) Steven’s Struggles - What’s Coming Next??

While things may be pretty dull in SU:F right now, I think that there's something amazing coming on the horizon. =3

...yeah, that's all I got for an intro. XD; More below the line.

EDIT (Jan 2, 2020): Added a few observation that I think are pretty important.

The General Mood

I'll admit to knowing pretty much exactly how Steven feels: watching people drift away and move forward while you seem to be stuck... needing to talk to someone about how you feel, but feeling like your options are bad, or that you need to talk to someone who can keep it a secret, first... Yeah, I relate a lot to these last two eps.

I also seem to relate (though I can't remember why XD; ) to what I call being "stuck in time," or "displaced in time" - when I say these, I mean things like wanting/needing to move on, but not wanting to, or not knowing how. It can also count for things like how Steven is both wanting things to be like they've been for him, and trying to move away from those things.

And I'm going to admit... the abrupt way that a lot of them left kinda doesn't seem to help. =/

As much as I hate long goodbyes at regular gatherings, short goodbyes when you don't know if you'll see each-other seem even worse. ...Not to mention they could’ve tried to keep him in the loop at least a little bit... (If you ask me, I say "Some friends they are... -.-;")

This said, I'm noticing something about the general tone of the show, and a pretty big contrast to the original series: Unlike SU, which started out with more of a feeling of lighthearted adventure and discovery, SU:F has started with more of a feeling of listlessness, melancholy, and ends that don't seem to lead anywhere, and leave Steven (and - by extension, in a possible way - the audience) with a feeling of having nowhere to go. And it's only kind of broken up with things that aren't really that dangerous - and in general, aren't really that exciting. XD; It's kind of interesting to see how things are "grown up," sure, but it's also kind of a drag.

Which... all of that seems pretty strange, if you think about it.

(EDIT) I mean, for one, it’s a pretty big contrast to the bright, happy, optimistic tone of the opening theme.

And for another... I remember a comment that there are still plenty of mysteries left unsolved from the original SU, and I'm more than inclined to agree with that. To name a handful of them...

We know about how strict Gem culture is, but hardly anything about any of their, say, folklore, traditions, mythologies etc. - things like a Cosmic Jubilee have only been mentioned in passing.

We still don't know what was in the chest in Lion's mane (which has been opened).

We still haven't seen that one Diamondy-looking structure that's been hinted at in the colony plans

We don't know about that one book in Rose's treasure trove that appears to be important.

What was up with the lizards?

We still don't really know much about White's type of Gems - though we can venture a few guesses.

(Not listed: possible vanity, melodramatic-ness among said Gems)

So, even though there's plenty to be explored - more than I think could be covered in a single season, or maybe even two - this fact seems to have been forgotten in-canon... and I would say conveniently so.

EDIT: Side note: It’s pretty frequently said that the kinds of things that bug us the most are the kinds of things that we ourselves need to work on. …Personally, I actually question how true it is, and if it’s more of an assumption Freud made that people run with, not being as much of “THE reality” as people tend to think - if at all. XD;

Regardless, it appears to be an assumption that’s being run with: You remember Steven’s complaint about Amethyst?

Well, personally, I’m sick of Steven acting like he’s so> mature now. Let yourself be yourself, dude! You don’t have to leave your old interests behind!!

...Anyway, similarly, the complaint about Garnet being "high-and-mighty" could easily be applied to Steven - even he's aware of his need to be needed, and the fact that he just suddenly took over Amethyst's mentorship program. And the part about Pearl being likely to blame herself and fall to pieces... well, admittedly, it seems like that one might be stretching a little bit, but I guess you could say that Steven assumes responsibility for other people's issues - even if he technically doesn't "blame" himself. And given his reactions during Little Graduation (as well as his behavior Prickly Pair), then I'd say that he's pretty close to falling to pieces.

(Bonus points for the gardening joke. X3)

At any rate, this only helps to feed the feelings of listlessness and such that have been going on. XD;

This said, one of the things about storytelling (of all forms) is that you can't keep the tone the same for long, or else that tone starts to get old. A feeling of boringness, naturally, is one of the worst tones to keep, and the whole point of what's been going on is that things have been pretty dull. I’m sure Crewniverse knows this: I doubt that they'd push a “boring” feeling for too long...

Especially not without it being a build-up for something BIG. =3

What I think is Coming

So one of the things that has been keeping the monotony from growing too big is the enemies shown in the intro.

So far, we’ve been encountering enemies from this shot every single week - or very-nearly every two eps. We’ve already encountered most of them, and only two are left: a big, spiny, worm-y thing (which looks pretty intimidating =3), and “White” Diamond…

As I've mentioned in a previous post, I think her change of color is probably pretty important. I can only imagine that whatever’s made her not-so-white is going to be covered, and assuming that this isn't self-inflicted somehow (or maybe even if it was), I can only assume it was triggered by something BIG. 83 ...If subtle. XD

Now, obviously, White doesn't seem the kind to do something like this to herself. In the post in the link above, I theorized that it may have been something she picked up from Steven - something that he wouldn't have used consciously. Something that he couldn't have even known about, because I think that even Rose didn't know.

I think it's a virus designed specifically for White - something that Rose wouldn't (couldn't!) have made on purpose. More likely, I think it was from someone who White eventually got, and was stuck in the moon base orb as punishment for her crimes.

I think that this prisoner is someone important who hasn't been given a proper introduction - someone who is going to get her introduction shortly. =3

There's Plenty of Evidence of a Moon Prisoner

The appearance of the moon seems FAR from random to me. I’m not really sure how to explain how, but the timing of it seems... planned, and it feels too much like it's not a coincidence.

One of the things I can say is that it's sometimes there, and sometimes not, and in of itself, it might seem inconsistent. It doesn't fit the “Okay, let's just stick the moon in the sky because it's night” thing that comes with most portrayals of the moon - this is partly because of just how often it shows during the day; something which happens IRL, but which few ever really put a focus on, especially in art.

And they can't be going for lunar accuracy because it’ll do things like staying almost-in-place after sunset, changing position entirely too quickly, and changing phases within the same day. In fact, in Sworn to the Sword, during the Jam Buds song, the moon is full during the day (which is impossible IRL), and then changes to a quarter-moon as soon as the song is over.

So basically, I think that there's a prisoner in the moon base’s observation orb, and she likes to watch what’s going on. When said prisoner is watching, there will be a change in the moon - or even the color of the sky. And judging by this, the prisoner...

Is interested in Steven and the Gems

Is especially interested in Steven and Connie

(Is probably a 'shipper in general)

Is supportive and excitable, though appears to have some issues with anxiety or something

Has pink magic

Is POWERFUL enough to affect the appearance of the moon, sky, and maybe even stars through her emotions

Is also INCREDIBLY interested in entertainment (wrestling, Beach-a-Palooza), the Rose Quartzes, and "Volleyball"

Yeah... I believe that - much like the robonoids in the ep Off-Colors - White Diamond was able to get through Rose's shield, and that a certain big "reveal" is basically a lot of mind-control on her part.

This has been by theory since a week after A Single Pale Rose came out (warning: large post) - or less than a week, technically. (It takes time to write these things. XD; )

Since before even Dewey Wins came out (after the Wanted arc), it has been my theory that Pink has been the prisoner in the orb (warning: old and long), and if the above list doesn't describe Pink - particularly the last few bullets - then I don't know what does. Add in the fact that she probably has empathy magic, and it seems pretty much guaranteed.

And yeah, the segments of Steven's dome suggest that he is part Diamond, but one of my theories suggests that Rose may have been made that way, anyway - that Pink made Rose to be part Diamond, and thus an abomination from the start (by Gem standards). Or at least that Pink put enough of herself into Rose that Rose's powers (and thus Steven's) could sort of emulate this.

But yeah, the behavior of the moon is... not very logical, as far as moons go. XD It makes a lot more sense if you interpret it as a sign that somebody is watching - especially if you take things like the size, frequency, and brightness of the moon into account. (The color of the sky also works - sometimes it has pink in it, especially around sunrise/set.)

This includes one of the two latest eps: The moon was generally there (and full! =D) throughout the graduation.

(Side note: It's neat seeing the Off-Colors eating. ^_^)

It blends in with the lighting, so it's hard to say whether a certain circle is the moon around the stage performance...

But it's definitely around the stage when the dome is created and the lighting is lost.

Once the dome is up, it's actually more visible through the dome, and it nearly-always shows in shots that include Steven.

(It also actually disappears from behind Lars' head after Steven points at him. XD)

(...granted, that one detail might be an error. But I believe it also might not be. ;3)

It disappears entirely right before the dome starts shrinking, and doesn't reappear for the rest of the party.

This is actually consistent behavior; I noticed the same thing in Cry for Help and Sadie's Song. It seems like when it looks like things could go reallybad (socially, at least), it's too difficult for her to watch. This is what I meant by "issues with anxiety or something." (The consistency seems like another good clue on it being intentional.)

However, the moon does show up again after things have calmed down again: it's full and BRIGHT as Steven drives and ponders things. This could be meant as wanting to give support, and feeling more than a little sorry - possibly including being sorry for looking away before.

But yes, in general, the behavior of the moon in this ep fits with my general assessment on the moon's appearances, as well as what I understand/believe of Pink's personality. And it looks to me like she already both would like to give help, and would probably need some, especially after release. ;3

(And seriously, why show the moon through the wall of the dome if it wasn't important? Especially if it was going to get covered and such, anyhow? The pattern of the dome already makes the background pretty busy and complicated - artistically speaking, I'm pretty sure it would've been better to leave the moon out.

And even more... why make it dis appear for only part of the story? It seems like they were committed to showing it, otherwise, so it seems like there'd have to be an important reason for that one, too. ;3)

I'll note that I didn't find any signs of the moon in the ep Prickly Pair, and that the sunset is clearly orange.

(Seriously, that's a huge contrast to the sunrise from Bluebird.)

But yeah, to me, it seems like pretty much everything points a new, major plot change coming very soon, and the moon - and its prisoner - are a really big part of that. =3

Possible Role(s) for Pink

Okay, so obviously if Pink were revealed not to be the same as Rose Quartz, then it would be a pretty big shake-up - there would probably be at least a few eps about the main characters trying to get used to the idea (especially Pearl HO BOY). This could definitely give Steven some stuff to do, though I think odds are good that Pink herself would do a lot of it. (And should, I believe - they'd partly be her problems, after all!)

...Though granted, I think there's a pretty good chance that pretty much every Gem on Earth - as well as in general - would need some time to get adjusted. XD; Speaking of which, I've already mentioned that en encounter with Jasper seems likely, as well as a possible-reveal with Smokey Quartz. (Aaaand of course, there’d have to be stuff about the Rose Quartzes and "Volleyball" HO BOY =D; )

I'll also note that I noticed that the moon was around during the "fight" at the end of Sunstone's video, so she would've seen both Sunstone and Rainbow.

(I've found out that XFinity wasn't showing the wrong vids after all. XD; Should've checked more intently sooner how embarrassing...)

But yeah. So far, Smokey's the only one of the three main Gem-Steven Fusions that hasn't been shown with a moon around, so that makes it seem even more likely to me that Smokey is gonna be important to her. =3

In general, I think that Pink being around could help tie up a lot of loose ends, and explain a lot of odd details - partly because a shake-up could lead to the Gems doing more thing, partly because of whatever Pink's actual involvement was during the war, and partly because I would be far from surprised if there were things that only Diamonds were allowed to know. XD

As I've already mentioned, it seems like Pink would want to help with things, as well as needing help, herself. It seems like she could be just the person Steven needs to help with his problems - possibly including the problem of how to solve his own problems, without always needing outside help. XD; She could be connected-yet-detached enough from everything that's been going on that it'd make her a pretty good candidate for somebody to listen to him, and there is some pretty good evidence that she was good at keeping secrets - even before the whole Earth fiasco happened.

The watching-from-the-moon thing could both complicate and simplify matters, depending on the situation. XD; (Not that I could really blame her.) ...Personally, I'm hoping for at least one joke about Pink having seen something awkward and embarrassing. X3

Anyway, I've mentioned that the moon wasn't there for Prickly Pair - well, it wasn't there for Guidance either, when the subject of Steven not knowing what to do first came up. ...Come to think, I guess you could also count it not being there when brought up in Little Graduation. At any rate, it seems that the topic of Steven feeling aimless is one that she probably doesn't know about, and would have to be brought up after her release. XD

I was theorizing before that maybe she wasn't sure about what was going on with Steven's new powers, but I think it's safe to say that those powers have been seen now. XD; At any rate, I think there's a good chance that Pink'd be able to give him some help regarding said newer powers.

And on Steven's side, she could give him someone to help, for awhile. =3 I mean, I've already mentioned that she seems to have fear issues - I'd bet she has a whole slew of baggage after whatever she did in the war, as well as being trapped on the moon. XD;

And for something that might be bigger... I think the Diamonds - as well as the Gem worlds in general - really need Pink. She just has so many traits that could balance the Diamonds out, if they really gave her the chance. I mean, forget the "problematic" Gems - I would think that Gems as a whole would probably be lost without helpful direction. After a long existence where everything was directed, it sounds like they don't really know what to do on their own... and instead of trying to help them through it, Blue, Yellow, and White just sort of... left them to their own devices.

And maybe it's just me, but I don't think that Steven would cut it - aside from not knowing the ins-and-outs of Gem culture and how it could affect things, I think that they'd need someone who could be there constantly. Not only would needing to sleep 1/3 of the time really cut into that, but biological needs in general would need to be accounted for, and neither returning to Earth nor trying to to equip the planets for his needs seems like a feasible route. XD;

(Also, one of my theories is that Pink grew immune to White's control due to growing more powerful, as indicated by their mural-halos...

...and I think that White needs a person that she can't control. XD; Seriously, she needs to have someone who can force her - teach her - to have an honest relationship, and I don't think that's gonna happen so long as White has the option to go an easier route.)

So yeah. I think that, before too long, the real Pink will return to her throne... and probably even get a series of her own. 83 Of course, she'd still visit, and deal with things on Earth now-and-then, but I think it'd be so awesome to have a series IMMERSED in the Gem side of things. 8333333

Call it a weird hill to stand-and-die on, and I'd be lying if I said there wasn't any motivated reasoning, but I've always been a big fan of Pink, since I started gleaming what little I could from what little clues I found. I saw a quirky, loving little Diamond who planned to save the Earth from the very beginning - even if she couldn't bring herself to openly stand up to the other Diamonds - and who planned from the very beginning to help to make Gems free. And if this Pink is really who she is, then I would love to see her get a show of her own. *^_^*

...So yeah. "Team" Pink-was-never-Rose forever. =3

Why do male pronoun fans hate you so much? What did you do? All I see is you minding your own business but the other side posts passive aggressive posts directed at you at least twice a week. I've been scrolling on your blog but all you do is post things you enjoy?? Why are people so obsessed with you and your ships. I don't understand.

Hi, there! I apologize in advance if my response sounds a bit snippy at times; this rancor is not directed at you but at the "haters" alluded to above. There are a few potential reasons behind their hatred, though the validity of those reasons might be open to debate depending on one's views. First, I am very passionate about promoting Grelle's identity as a trans woman. While I do not send anon hate (that's extremely immature, to say the least) or anything of that sort, I make no attempt to hide my anger when people misgender her if I believe their actions to be motivated by transphobia and/or fujoshi tendencies. My sharp tongue and Mediterranean temper most likely earned the enmity of many male pronoun users.Another potential reason for their hatred might be the frequency with which I post. I adore Grelle with every fiber of my being, am naturally obsessive, and have an imagination that won't shut up. As a result, I come up with new posts about her on a regular basis and reblog my fair share of Grelle art (often with rather effusive tags!). I suppose these "enemies" might assume that I'm doing this simply to spite them? I can be petty, but I'm not that petty, and my world doesn't revolve around TERFs. I just love Grelle (to DEATH!) and want to share that love with the rest of you.A third reason (often alluded to in the vagueposts) is that I headcanon Grelle as bi and tend to shamelessly make and reblog a fair bit of content featuring her in relationships with other Kuro ladies, most prominently Hannah. I'm also the evil bisexual mastermind behind the upcoming Sapphic Sutcliff Week. (diabolical laughter) All jesting aside, I'd like to use this ask as an opportunity to explain my motivations for doing so.

The people who oppose my actions make me out to be a fetishist with the rather ignoble "agenda" of putting Grelle in wlw relationships solely for the sake of titillating my own lusts. However, my main intention has always been to create the representation I want to see. As a sapphic bisexual, I love to see content featuring romantic relationships between women that are healthy, loving, and stable. I adore domestic fluff between female characters. Since my religious denomination forbids marriage between women, it means a lot to me when I can see happy sapphic marriages in fic; if I am denied that in real life, at least I can enjoy that domestic bliss in the realm of my imagination. I especially want wlw content that is made by us and for us, portraying the women and their experiences in a realistic, respectful light rather than reducing them to mere sex objects. However, there tends to be a paucity of such content in almost all the fandoms with which I'm involved, Kuro included. There is little denying the fact that there is a dearth of high-quality content featuring Grelle in relationships with women that also uses the correct (female) pronouns for Grelle. I wanted to see more positive wlw representation involving Grelle, so I resolved to make my own. I realized there were other people who shared my sentiments, so I proposed the Sapphic Sutcliff fandom week as a means of organizing our creative endeavors. I'd like to add that I only ship Grelle with women when the relationship seems plausible to me based on the characters' personalities; while the aesthetic does play a role, it is never the end-all-be-all in any of my OTPs, which I feel sets me apart from a mere fetishist.

One thing I find rather disturbing is that some of the male pronoun users are apparently under the impression that all wlw relationships are inherently "weird" or "gross." We are not intrinsically filthy creatures! We are people just like you, and we deserve the right to see ourselves portrayed in a positive light. Although some of my own content is rather mature, I'd like to think there's more to my work than mindless sex.As a final note, I find it mighty interesting that these people lose their minds over consensual relationships between women while never uttering a peep about Sebaciel. Mighty interesting.Since I don't interact with these people directly, I can't say for certain, but I'm assuming those are the main reasons for their animosity.

VLD4x02 – “Reunion”

4x02 – “Reunion”

This is another Pidge-centered episode. As I said in my commentary for last episode, in this episode, Pidge goes off on a personal mission, separate from the other Paladins. She doesn’t get yelled at or condemned for doing so by the other Paladins. Last episode though, she was fully participating with the other Paladins in yelling at Keith for him going off on a mission separate from the group. His mission was for the benefit of the group, hers is purely personal: searching for her brother. It’s like the writers treat Pidge differently than they do other characters, like she’s unnaturally perfect and never does anything wrong. Perfect Pidge.

The episode opens with a flashback. Pidge is sitting in class. The teacher is droning, “Photons from the visible spectrum are manipulated, creating a quantum storage network. It’s the most advanced storage system available.” Pidge, unable to read the mood of the room, interjects, “Actually, the Galaxy Garrison is performing tests using DNA helixes as storage. That’s the same way genetic information is stored in our bodies.” I don’t now why I get caught up on some comparatively minor things here, but I do. Pidge’s interjection is written with the intention of showing that she’s smarter than her teacher. Her specific interjection however isn’t successfully doing that: She cites the GG trying to develop DNA data storage, so that storage system is not one that is currently available, and the teacher was talking about what is currently available for use. If these students can understand the teacher’s words about photons and quantum storage, then I think they know what DNA is, and thus don’t need Pidge’s explanation that DNA is how “genetic information is stored in our bodies,” so that part of the line sounds written to explain it to viewers who don’t know what DNA is.

Me being me, this bit of dialog triggered my creative-writers-need-to-do-research rule, so I decided to do some minor googling. From the quick search (so no where near an exhaustive or scientific database search), there are specific benefits and problems of both atomic (quantum) storage and DNA storage that make both worth exploring, but neither better than the other. DNA storage systems are slow, whereas atomic storage requires ultracold environments to function. The idea in this narrative moment is that Pidge is demonstrating that she’s intellectually superior to the teacher and other students by suggesting potential DNA storage is better than their existing atomic storage, but the nature of both storage methods means she’s not right.

“Nerd!” another student bullies her. The class laughs. The teacher does nothing. I would like to say that, since this is set in the future, the teacher would have reacted to the bullying and reprimanded the bullying students, but the show doesn’t have it happen. It’s a writing choice to have the teacher standby and let the bullying happen. The effect is to make it look like, poor Pidge, so much smarter than everyone around her, and none of them can even see her genius, we should feel sorry for her that her inferiors, adult and peer alike, resent her for her superiority.

On to Pidge’s bedroom, which I really like. Whoever did the background art of her bedroom did a really nice job. I wouldn’t mind my bedroom being a real version of hers.

Matt enters her room, without knocking, and brings her cake. He calls her “Pidge,” and she replies that she hates it when he calls her that. This makes me want to know what the origin of him calling her Pidge is, and why is it such that she hates being called that. This detail is mostly there to set up the idea that her going on to call herself Pidge comes out of her wanting to reconnect with her brother.

“What’s the point,” Pidge asks in response to Matt telling her she has to keep studying hard. As a self-identifying nerd, I would say part of what makes us nerds is that we never feel the need to ask what’s the point in studying: We like learning new stuff, we’re constantly curious, and we pursue that need the same as we breathe because we need air. This “what’s the point” line from Pidge has a hollow tonal quality reminiscent of the post-episode moral moments that a lot of 80s cartoons had. Those moments were cloying to me when I watched them as a little kid back then, so imagine how this feels to me now as an adult.

Matt tells her that he’s gotten notice that he’s been accepted to the Galaxy Garrison. Pidge responds with excitement before grabbing her text book to keep studying. This continue studying moment seems so unnaturally silly.

Back to the current day of the story. Pidge takes off her glasses. The first time I watched this (and the second time too because I had forgotten), I was baffled by why Pidge could see when she took her glasses off. Sometimes, I feel lucky if I don’t walk into walls when I’m not wearing my glasses or contacts. The end of the episode reveals that Pidge wears Matt’s old glasses, and that she does not actually need to wear glasses herself. I’ll grudgingly admit that her wearing them to try to feel connected to him is sweet.

The only concern anyone expresses over Pidge going on her mission alone is that she might need backup. There is no concern that she’s splitting the group, which was such major importance to everyone regarding Keith last episode. The other Paladins are smiling while looking at the display of Pidge during their communication, so no one is bothered by the thing they were bothered by last episode. Pidge says, “Plus you guys still have plenty to do on Olkarion.” So, she is specifically leaving while the Paladins are working on something, which was the basis of their complaints against Keith last episode. Whatever the Paladins are doing on Olkarion is not mentioned, so it feels more like a one-line excuse to sideline their characters.

I could go into detail about the next couple of scenes, there are aspects that could easily be critiqued, but after writing it out, I’ve decided to just quickly summarize the events instead and move on. Pidge meets some alien on a planet because he’s one of only a few sellers of some substance that she’s identified the people in the video with Matt use. The alien and she briefly fight, and she acquires the identity of one of the people in the video. With just a couple of button pushes, she searches some database on the Green Lion and learns the last known location of Te-osh. She arrives on that moon, destroys a couple of attacking Galra fighters. She assumes that the guy running toward her as she lands is a member of the rebels (I don’t know why she makes this assumption). Lieutenant Ozar tells her that they’re trying to evacuate the base before more Galra can arrive. She tells him that the other Paladins aren’t coming (if these people need help, shouldn’t she relay that information to the other Paladins since they’re just sitting around on Olkarion doing an unidentified, and thus narratively unimportant, something?). She asks for Te-osh, who is inside a ship on top of a building, and Pidge goes to talk to her when a Galra fighter that no one could see starts blasting everything. Several other Galra ships join the attack. Te-osh’s ship takes off, pursued by Galra. Pidge jumps back in Green, destroys one Galra fighter.

With the attack on the moon over (Galra are still attacking Te-osh’s ship), the remaining rebels tell Pidge that with their one remaining ship damaged, they can’t go help Te-osh. “What about you?” Pidge asks. “We know what it means to fight the Galra. The supplies on that ship are more important than our lives,” Ozar says. I know the show thinks it’s making some dramatic statement about how the war is and how brave and awesome the rebels are, but I still don’t know why Pidge hasn’t called the other Paladins to tell them these people need help. Or even if not the Paladins, where are the billions of people that should now be a part of the Voltron Coalition that the show keeps having characters, notably Coran and Allura, brag about forming? Pidge refuses to leave them behind and yells, “Everyone aboard, now!” Aboard what? Not the Green Lion, which is what I thought they would have to board if their ship’s damaged. But later, the rebels are on, not just one, but three ships in space when Pidge tows Te-osh’s ship back to them. Whatever this performative decisive moment Pidge has right here telling them to get on board means nothing.

Pidge and Green catch up with Te-osh’s ship, she destroys the Galra fighters with the plant cannon (why not just use the regular cannon?), and boards Te-osh’s ship. Te-osh gives Pidge a transponder that every rebel has that can be used to find other rebels.

This is very important: Te-osh says, as she hands the transponder to Pidge, “He may not have his anymore, but this is his code.” This line of dialog does something very significant to this episode’s narrative: it undermines the emotion of a future scene. In this line of dialog, we viewers have learned something: Pidge will not find Matt when she finds the transponder. The entire point of “he may not have his anymore” is to set up him not having it anymore. There is no other reason to write that into the dialog. So then, when Pidge follows the transponder, and eventually finds what she thinks is Matt’s grave, we know that it’s not. The emotion of that graveside scene is totally undermined.

More flashbacks. Matt’s gotten a message from their dad on a “quantum frequency,” which bypasses Galaxy Garrison protocols. Matt says, “What the Garrison doesn’t know won’t hurt them.” So, the whole Holt family don’t care about safety protocols. For people who supposedly so eagerly want to be a part of the Garrison, this disdain they have for Garrison rules should get them kicked out of the GG. Sam and Matt Holt are characters who are pretty much just extensions of Pidge’s character. This disregard for GG rules comes from her character’s already established disregard for GG rules. That Sam and Matt are fine with violating the rules, and that they don’t get punished for doing so, is just another manifestation of Perfect Pidge.

There’s a long, unnecessarily drawn out explanation about how Sam and Matt have a special, secret, physical book-necessary encryption method to their communication. I haven’t studied encryption, but I imagine that any system that requires looking something up in a book is fundamentally not a complex encryption method. But then, there’s a second portion of Sam and Matt’s special code that involves them having memorized specific “additions and subtractions to numbers we send, so that even if someone intercepts our messages and has the same book, they still don’t know what we’re saying.” This makes no sense. Changing numbers in the message does not change the non-number portions of the message, so they would totally still know what Sam and Matt were saying.

This scene drags on way too long. It’s setting up the next step of Pidge’s journey once she realizes Matt’s not actually dead at the graveside, sure, but the scene is not interesting.

Pidge scoffs at how “low-tech” the method is. Matt responds, “You can’t rely too much on computers. The most powerful processor you have is right here,” and he points to his head. This is a giant cliché. And it’s wrong. If the brain was more powerful that computers, then we would never need computers to do calculations quickly for us. Yes, we have to program the computers to do what they do, but they can do what they do faster than we can mentally do the same processes, thus they are more powerful.

“And it can never be hacked,” Matt adds to his brain comment. Except, yeah, it can be. At this point in the show, we’ve seen Narti do so several times. Yeah, Matt wouldn’t have confirmation that psychic powers exist at this time in his story, but we viewers do. If Matt’s comment here was setting up a plot that involved something happening to hack his brain, then that might justify the inclusion of this line of dialog. But nothing like that happens for him, only for other characters. And the process of it happening to other characters – the clone of Shiro – results in everyone saying that being brain hacked makes a person evil. Knowing that future plot with the clone, I can’t help but be angry at this moment of the show.

Sam’s big message worth breaking Garrison rules and using some special actually-inferior but supposedly-superior encryption method is to tell Matt when his bedtime is. Are you kidding me!? This is neither cute, nor funny, despite the show intending it to be.

Back to now, Pidge finds the graveyard planet. The show again ignores that a planet has gravity in depicting large chunks of rock floating in the air. It’s a significant investment of resources to transport someone’s body to another planet for burial when it would be cheaper to just release their body into the black of space (assuming a space-located death), bury them on a planet in a normal graveyard, or cremate them. So, the setting of this graveyard is contrived. It doesn’t bother me too much, so I can accept it as a conceit for the sake of a good story. The problem is that I don’t feel like I’m getting a good story in this sequence.

Because again, I already know that Matt is not here.

Pidge’s armor translates engraved text: this is a monument to 127,098 warriors who died in a fight against tyranny. She runs toward the graves. The voice acting in this scene is really, really good, which is part of why it bothers me so much that the emotion has already been undermined by that line of dialog earlier letting us know that Matt’s not at the location of this transponder.

The episode overplays its attempt to create the emotion with a series of quick flashbacks that are supposed to make us upset at the idea that Matt is dead, and Pidge has failed to find him in time. Oh! the loss of their special sibling relationship! But this sequence is excessive since we know he’s not dead.

Also, it wasn’t that long ago that the rebels had been working with Matt. Having to bury 127,098 people who died in a war would take time and would have resulted in records as to when that conflict occurred. So, the underlying timing of these two events – the last time Matt was with the rebels and the conflict that killed these people and time it would take to bury them and construct the memorial to them – undermines the expectation that we believe Matt to be dead.

Again, the voice acting is really good in this scene, despite its other problems. Of course, it starts cliché raining.

Pidge says his birthday is wrong. I guess we are to assume Matt put his birthday into the grave’s information system when he buried his transponder here, and he did so specifically in case either Sam or Pidge came looking for his transponder? That is very, very contrived, convoluted, and convenient.

Pidge figures it out that hidden in the wrong birthday are coordinates, and she heads off to them. She’s being followed by the growly guy that interrogated the shopkeeper after her. Pidge makes her way to the coordinates: A large, weirdly shaped asteroid with an old mine carved down into it. Rocks are floating around as they do on this show. Green lands heavily, suggesting there’s gravity, but everything else, including Pidge, floats, which would mean no gravity. She descends further into the dark shaft. At the bottom, she picks up and drops a rock, which falls as if gravity. She’s literally in the exact same area of effect that the rock is in, but the rock is affected by gravity while she is not. This is not how gravity works. “Something must be generating gravity nearby,” she says. Yes, the giant asteroid you’re on right now would be generating gravity. Everything technically generates gravity, even Pidge’s own body. But the largest source of gravity would just be this big asteroid.

She uncovers a hatch down into a massive base with active displays and computers running. Someone attacks her. Oh, the drama, the excitement, the revelation! It’s Matt. (I’m not surprised whatsoever.) It’s supposed to be a touching reunion, but it’s not the resolution of narrative tension that it could be, so that emotion is unfortunately nowhere near as deep as the show wants it to be. “I can’t believe you found me. It doesn’t seem possible,” Matt says. Yeah, not possible except for the trail that you left that only Sam and Pidge could figure out, so not just possible, but specifically only possible for two people. I guess it could be Matt was expecting it was only possible for Sam and that Pidge was back on Earth.

Apparently, the name of Voltron has spread throughout the universe, but the names of the Paladins have not. So, Matt knows of Voltron but is surprised to learn Pidge is a Paladin. One would think that the rebels would by now know.

The growly cliché villain shows up and attacks. He’s a bounty hunter and has been hunting for Matt. The bounty hunter says, “Looks to me like you’re made of meat, just like everyone else.” This is a good line. It’s creepy and the least cliché thing this villain does. These two elements are decently written, even if I originally was confused with her taking the glasses off at the beginning of the episode.

I am curious if the Kerberos mission was Matt’s first space mission. He acts excited in this flashback before his leaving on the mission as if it will be his first time in space. But no space organization is going to send someone who’s never been in space on a mission that has the long timeframe this one does.

The music of this last scene and credits is really nice.

So, Pidge ends the episode having achieved one of her big character goals: Find her brother. I just really wish the show had managed her progression better in this episode. It really bothers me that we know from the instant she gets Matt’s transponder from Te-osh that Matt is not going to be wherever that transponder is, thus undermining the emotion of the graveyard scene. Writing a fake character death and revelation can be done in different ways. You have to write with a different set of tonal qualities if the audience already knows that the death isn’t real than you would if the audience doesn’t know. The way the graveyard scene is written, it’s with tone suitable for an audience that doesn’t know. But because we do, it makes the fake death and supposed revelation that he’s alive feel hollow. It makes it feel like we’re being jerked around by the show. It further bothers me that this was done because the voice acting on Pidge in the graveyard scene is really good. I want to feel the emotion of the moment, but I can’t because I already know going into that scene that he’s alive.

The Art of Replying Messages

Okay, so this post is out of the blue. And definitely not a post to teach anyone on how to reply messages, not to mention mastering the art of it. But, it is basically a post stipulating my concerns on how people actually respond to messages nowadays. To be honest, I am writing this with a hint of anger.

So, there are many types of people in the world, hence, the styles of them replying messages too. I am going to state mine first. I would say my replies are very promising, in the sense that I reply fast. When I mean fast, like instant! I would not allow myself to reply a certain message overnight, unless if I am asleep of course. I need to clear my messages before I go to bed, when I wake up, before I start doing something, or in other words, I have to clear my messages once I received them. I consider myself a good texter. You can always expect my fast replies. The reason for this is not because I am on my phone all the time (or maybe I am, OOF), but because I do not usually mute my phone, therefore, I can actually hear my notifications when a message comes in. When that happens, I will reply to them. I cannot stand anything in my notification bar. Keeping it empty, is the only way.

But that’s just me, rare.

I now going to zoom in to one particular type of people, and their styles of replying messages. Of course there are lots more, and if I am going to elaborate on all of them, I think I would be writing a book about it, which has no reader at all, just like this post. I mean this post is meant to be read by no one, other than me. Basically this platform is for me to ramble and complain, because I am all alone in KL now, and it’s depressing. I have no one person to ramble this to. I mean I do have friends to talk but not for these petty shit. What would they think about me?

Okay, coming back to the subject matter. This particular person and I, chat everyday. Imagine, people, imagine. Chat everyday, wow, you guys sure do have a lot of topics to talk about. And yes, we do. But OMG, what I’m telling you is merely the half truth! Though we chat everyday, but the frequency of replying is like once a day, or to be frank, once in two days? URGH. Previously, I laid down the context of me replying messages, so one may be curious, how can that happen to Michh when she replies in just a few seconds. Right? I am curious myself too. I’ve given it some thoughts.

Reason No.1: This person is just too busy! So this person and I are two really really busy people, because we have our priorities straight, CAREER. So, this person studies, studies, studies. At least that’s what I thought. I mean this person has housemate right? He must have spent some time with the housemate, so there must be some free time right, you have to eat right? So why not reply?! Further, me, being a sneaky lil stalker (not really, because the info can easily be derived just with a few clicks of a button). This person watched my snaps, this person viewed my stories on IG, this person can send streaks, this person is even online on Whatsapp sometimes, and still has the audacity to not reply my messages. So this reason, in the rubbish bin.

Reason No.2: Different timezones. So this person lives in the UK, in London, my dream city, urgh. Lucky fella. So we have an 8-hour gap. Based on my observation, this person replies to my messages at a point in time which is usually bed time, which means it would be the time I wake up. This person told me that he or she has the habit of clearing the backlog of messages at the end of the day. Fine, then. But how come there are days where you don’t even reply before you sleep??? Do not tell me you don’t sleep, because as far as sleeping is concerned, that is your favourite activity. Urgh. With regard to timezone, yes we do have a gap, but there are also hours where both of us are awake, for example my night, is your afternoon, and you are clearly awake since you have the audacity to reply to my snaps and not my messages. So you’re telling me your Snapchat is in one phone and Whatsapp is in another. Utter Crap. So, Reason 2, in the rubbish bin.

Reason No.3: This person literally has no interest in chatting. I would like to think this is not the case, but people should expect the worst, am I right? It is so hard to grasp this person’s feelings, because in some days, this person responds actively, such as recommending me songs, sending me photos of adorable puppy, telling me about how’s the day going; in some days, this person doesn’t even reply. I know I shouldn’t expect anything, because expectation leads to disappointment. I just can’t help it, alright? Is this person chatting with me because this person genuinely has an interest in talking to me, treating me like a good friend, we can talk casually after all that has happened? Or is this person doing it out of guilt, and responsibility? If it’s the latter, I’d rather not talk at all. It hurts.

Should I confront this person? Should I ask this person what’s the reason of the late replies? Would that seem a bit pathetic and desperate? Who am I to ask such questions, it’s not like I am this person’s partner? What would this person think of me? Or should I just stay quiet and wait for this person’s replies and appreciate this mere link that we have. Maybe if I make a move, the breakage of the link is an inevitable consequence. I don’t know. I need a sign. I need an answer.

Ignorance is key, perhaps?

Fine Art Collaboration. Final project for this collaboration module. A wicked problem. Biophilia/ Biomimicry. 10/01/21

You are asked to consider the environmental and ecological context of Fine Art practice and your position and identity within it.

‘Biophilia hypothesis, idea that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. The term biophilia was used by German-born American psychoanalyst Erich Fromm in The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness (1973), which described biophilia as “the passionate love of life and of all that is alive.” The term was later used by American biologist Edward O. Wilson in his work Biophilia (1984), which proposed that the tendency of humans to focus on and to affiliate with nature and other life-forms has, in part, a genetic basis.’

Biophilia is a term that translates in the Greek to a ‘love of life’.

There are 2 types of biophilic practice.

1. Product based - designed external products/architecture

2. Process based - internal connection to natural self, interconnectivity, well-being, growth in society.

In our collab group, consisting of Ian, Lianna and myself, we got together to discuss the presentation and decide how we wanted to proceed over the Christmas break. We identified that to all of us water was important.

Water connects everything, historically towns and cities have been situated strategically alongside rivers. Rivers sustain life and provide transport links, enabling commerce and trade, travel, fishing, washing and energy amongst other things. Rivers converge into bigger waterways and ultimately end up at the sea, they map our country, providing connectivity.

When I was younger I used to play with my friends at the river alongside their mill. These were magical summers, finding treasure, broken pots worn smooth by the water, that we were convinced were Roman, panning for gold, trying to ‘tickle fish. The fact that all we ever found was blue and white china did not diminish our excitement or purpose. Whole summers were spent in this fashion and life long friendships formed. The water gives me a feeling of innate calmness, I grew up on the coast in North Devon and try and get to the sea as often as possible. I walk alongside the Wye 3 or 4 times a week with my dogs, it really grounds me. One of my favourite places in this country is Tarr Steps on Exmoor. The river walk there is so peaceful, tuneful, and engaging, as much for the memories as for the experience. It is my place to re connect myself with nature and think.

Ian felt that the rivers and canals were lines through the landscape and we discussed how rivers form the landscape, carving out the path of least resistance and the amazing features they form like Ox bow lakes or bends in the river’s course. Lianna felt that water was a powerful thing and could easily end life as well as sustain it and that it maps the world. we all feel the linking of nature through water.

There is much talk about social prescribing these days, the medical profession realising the need that people have to connect with nature, and connection in general, feel the rhythm of the seasons and spend as much time as they can outdoors every day. It has a hugely positive impact on well being and physical health. We are all connected, all life is connected and we exist in a balance...one that we are disrupting as a species.

We decided to meet on January 5th to take a walk along the river starting in town, urban river landscape, and following its path up towards Breinton, rural river landscape. The idea was to capture images of the waterway and surrounding landscape, take my dogs and see how they interacted with the river and to record the sounds of the water and wildlife that we may encounter along the way. This plan was scuppered due to the tightening Covid restrictions. We are now in a full lockdown and that I feel has greatly hampered our ability to effectively collaborate. We have been messaging sporadically on our WhatsApp collab group but nothing beats a proper face to face conversation and so we have arranged a meeting on teams after our PIC 2 session today (monday).

Over the Christmas break we agreed to work independently gathering images and sound and sharing them via WhatsApp as we now knew we couldn’t meet for the walk.

I took this photo during a pre christmas walk with the dogs when the river had burst it’s banks again. It put a full stop to that walk and it speaks to me of the climate crisis. These events are increasing in frequency. Here, it is just inconvenient but elsewhere life and habitat are in danger. Humans are responsible for climate change- how do we engage the climate change deniers and get them to see that radical change is an urgency? how do we protect this planet not just for the planets sake but because we are making ourselves deliberately homeless and because we are the ones whose life wont be able to be sustained? Half of me wants to make work that gently engages and raises the issues (I’m interested in craftivism) and half of me wants to make loud, ranting, angry work that confronts and provokes. But like the fable of Aesop involving the Sun and the Wind, who was stronger (more effective)? The wind blew and blew and tried to force the man’s coat from him and failed because the man clutched his coat more tightly around him. The sun came out and shone on the man who grew warm and removed his coat willingly...

The water tower has the best view of the floods.

These are but a few of the images I took, I am loving having a camera (borrowed from college), Both Lianna and Ian took a similar amount of photos. Then of course it froze and we captured some beautiful images of the Haw frost as well.
