As someone who only got back into SW fandom recently, would you say the Acolyte is worth watching for someone who only cares about the Jedi? The Jedi characters seem interesting, but everything I’ve heard about it is that it’s basically a bashfest of them so I’m very wary

Hi! This is a difficult question to answer, because a lot is going to depend on your tolerance levels and where you stand with unreliable narrators in a story and authorial intention vs what's on the screen, but my general instinct is to lean towards that, if you're just here for the Jedi, you probably won't enjoy it that much. I can say that I enjoyed much of it, I think I might even have recommended it if the ending had held together better for me (I thought it didn't land and fell prey to the series' biggest fault, that characters did things because the plot demanded it, rather than because I felt their motivations were coherent), but that ultimately it was kind of a let down. Like, I'm not even mad about the Jedi stuff, I'm disappointed that I think the ending fell right on its face, after giving me a lot of intriguing stuff! The characters are delightful, the fight scenes are genuinely exciting to watch, the actors are doing a hell of a job, I wouldn't mind more time spent in that world, but I will say that I think a big problem with the series is that it knew how to parrot Star Wars lines and scenes, but didn't get any of the core messages of the movies and SW as a whole, which if you don't like Lucas' messages, that may well be a bonus for someone! (<--said without shade) I would recommend it if you're okay with it having a disappointing ending story-wise, it doesn't really fit with Lucas' Star Wars imo, and the intent being some Jedi criticism but that honestly I thought was pretty understandable in-universe, given the limited things any given character knows. My honest gut reaction is that, if you're just here for the Jedi, you probably won't enjoy it very much, but that I think it's fine to watch if you temper your expectations of what it is and just want some new Jedi babies to love. I thought it was worth watching, but I don't care about authorial intention outside of Lucas, and I'm perfectly fine with unreliable narrator characters, and I'm a prequels bitch anyway so whatever happens outside of that I can take or leave, which means I just enjoy the parts I like and [whoosh] everything else doesn't exist because I don't care. 😂

Has anon watched other TV shows that are not Euphoria? Coz I will be blaming Sam Levinson for them earnestly thinking that a TV show is supposed to have 1 director. I feel like half the reason EU doesn't reach its fullest potential is because Sam thinks he can do it all himself. That ask kind of pissed me off but look at that I just turned it into a SL bashfest. 🤦‍♀️ sheesh, I was just trying to look for fanfics for a quick read on TVTropes, not bashfests… the miracuplague strikes even to this day, clogging tvtropes’ many many categories. Like god, even their summary description and listed tropes turn us levelheaded wary folks away. Some of the titles are clickbait in order to fool the naive newcomers. The plus side is that we shall be spared from the negativity and brainrot by not reading such heretics and false words.

I don’t think the Akuma class is truly awful, just misguided and still young. Maybe the salters mixed them up with less likable characters from other franchises or even their rl past bullies/abusers?

Mme. Bustier is secretly a past bully/criminal like Lila? Was that added just to crap on the teacher even more? I’m still traumatized by that one fic where Bustier gets killed gruesomely by her husband for being “cheated on” until he realized his error and offed himself. Even Lila getting shanked in prison by the inmates... All bc Marinette’s feelings were hurt and she got socially isolated. Not just her other “OPPs” deleting themselves from bullying, getting killed in a fight or other ways en masse.

I don’t care how well known or popular those writers/artists are with their 300-400 notes on whatever total stats they have here or wherever else. The audacity to defend Marinette who’s clearly a stalker whilst crapping on nearly everyone else for minor inconveniences.

It’s absolutely disgusting and close-minded that they still think that Adrien is just like his father. The abuse victim! I can excuse Gabriel salt over most other types bc he isolates his son and legit refuses to let him have enough free time. Just to keep a close eye on his young model!

Again, didn’t see most male characters outside of ML get raked over this hard.

Former anti here- I got suckered into anti groupthink in a Facebook group for leftists. It started pretty simple, I was just a part of a group that talked about bad shit going on in the world.

Then came the post about the Nazi furry. Someone submitted it and it got approved and the mods were watching the group carefully over it. At first it wasn't a furry bashfest, but it devolved that way and a lot of furries came into the comments defending themselves, and eventually that devolved into them just defending the Nazi Furry guy via freedom of expression. Huge groups of people were banned. Then more people came out as furries, and so on.

This devolved into the group saying all pedophiles should be shot, there was no help for non offending pedophiles and they should all die. Same with nazi's. Opinions I shared as a survivor who had been ignored and told I was lying. People not only believed me, but they wanted retribution for me? It was intoxicating and I felt safe in that space, the way I should have been in my childhood.

Eventually whole groups of people were being banned for their opinions and the entire group turned into a cesspool of bashing. Pedophilia in all it's forms was condemned, including writing.

(With an odd exception made for those with pedophilia ocd.)

I became a mod of this group, and stayed a mod for several years, because they wanted more poc moderators. Eventually the zuccening happened and the group was nuked from orbit. My partner at the time was relieved, he expressed the opinion that they were changing me. He was less relieved when I found the anti circles.

When I moved into fandom spaces I took that mentality with me for a long time until I got into an age gap ship (I'm not the kind of shipper who can choose my ships) of two adults, 106 years old and 45 years old. Suddenly everyone was on my back about it.

Nothing I said made any difference, and I quickly realized I was now "the pedophile" to the anti's. I cried about this for weeks, until my partner took me by the face and said to me, (paraphrased)

"You have always been a kind person. These people turned you cruel. Why are you crying over them? You were proud of being kind, you were proud of being compassionate, where did my fiancé go?"

That's when I woke up. Like a light bulb turning on, I realized that I had stopped being myself to keep the feeling of safety that I had. I wore it like a shield, as though being in these sort of groups would keep anything bad from happening to me ever again. But I already had a shield from pedophiles-I was an adult. I didn't have to stay stuck in my trauma, never growing past it, and I got therapy, where I learned that Anti circles just reinforced and revictimized me. They kept me in the trauma because it was convenient for them to use me as a good victim.

Why do you think the show runners asked the animators to stop animating Adrien expressively after Season 1/2? I always thought that this just happened randomly. I noticed the difference in Season 3. Season 1/2 Adrien has more... character. He has a bit more personality. He's more likely to show negative expressions. In his animation and in his writing. I thought it was an unintentional progression until I read those little blurbs SAMG made when they stepped down as the primary animation studio. In one of them, they distinctly say that they used to have more fun with Adrien's expressions, but stopped because they were asked to animate him with less character than that. And I just wonder why why why? I have all sorts of theories. I guess it could have something to do with the sentimonster plot. Maybe they felt he needed to be more "perfect" to fit with that plot line? I also consider it might be all the complaints they were getting about Chat Noir? There was a lot of Adrien salt early on, right? Maybe they decided to tone him down so people didn't complain as much about him? Either way, it makes me sad because I liked when Adrien was more expressive. I liked when he was more inclined to make a few mistakes here and there. I know practically no one agrees with me on this, but I'm still crossing my fingers that he has some sort of antagonistic arc. It's not that I want him to go wild. I just want him to be allowed to disagree with people, allowed to make mistakes, allowed to step out of line for once and make unpretty expressions. Yeah, some salters will use it as a victory cry, but screw them. Are we supposed to adjust everything so that salters won't misconstrue it? All we'll get from doing that is a bunch of extremely boring characters. Let Adrien be upset and actually make a difference about it- good or bad. Or at least let him be more expressive again.

I don't know about those SAMG notes. As to Adrien salt potentially impacting it, we didn't really get the first rumblings of Adrien salt until season 2 started airing, and it only turned into a full-blown, no-holds-barred bashfest during season 3, with Chameleon leading the charge. So I don't think Adrien bashing had anything to do with any change from season 2 to season 3.

35. NORWAY Subwoolfer - “Give that wolf a banana” 10th place

You’d expect them to be higher, but nope!

We interrupt this bashfest of Sad Emo Boi Ballads to shred some fuckin’ nihilistic novelty that -true to form- makes me feel absolutely NOTHING! Which honestly, given *the sort of entry* this is, is a giant fucking red flag for its (lack of) quality. 

For some reason I convinced myself that I had always vaguely liked Subwoolfer before Eurovision, but oops here’s the review I wrote *before* their first live in MGP:

Way to go, me from the past!! I guess my pre-show appreciation was merely spillover relief that they won that *DREADFUL* National Final (if you want a sense of how brain-numbingly stupid MGP2022 was: Subwoolfer aren’t even amongst the 10 dumbest things about it! Imagine THAT!)

Regardless, my impression of Subwoolfer was always one of an act that isn’t nearly as witty or original as it thinks it is. It is effectively what a bunch of marketing researchers would come up with if you asked them to design a viral hit by strictly looking at census data. “HA HA HA! Masked singers in space wolf suits singing utter nonsense while doing a meme dance! HA HA HA HA! Are you not entertained?!”

Sadly the answer to that is: “not really”. First off, EVERYONE already knew Subwoolfer were Ben Adams and Gaute Ormåsen before they even won the NF, so fuck your mystery and shove it, Norway.

Secondly, once you get through the initial ‘wtf did I just watch” phase, it becomes stale alarmingly fast. For all its “ZOMG SPACE WOLF” bluster, “Give that wolf a banana” is formulaic and bland, and I blame a fucking lack of chutzpah.. 

Sadly, Subwoolfer also chose to take themselves seriously as a Joke Act and didn’t content themselves with merely being likeable gimmick filler. (a role they would have been fine in! “Dads in wonky outfits doing stupid meaningless shit for funsies” is Circus Mircus’s entire appeal!). The Concept Demanded however that Subwoolfer go viral AT ALLLLL COSTS!!!! So they tried, with a level of desperation usually reserved for Jessika Muscat’s MESC entries, and failed. Multiple times.  

A wise individual would simply accept that “well, perhaps the overal project just isn’t that good” and leave it at that, hoping for the best, but nope, not these eejits. 

Soon enough my enjoyment of “Give that wolf a banana” would be directly tied to my willingness to put up with the increasedly inane and obsequious bullshit they were spewing JUST to maintain a modicum of relevance. They lost me somewhere between “FUN FACT: “Give That Wolf” is actually a pro-vaccination anthem, where 🐺🐺 = 🦠 and 🍌= 💉 ” [ah, ain’t nothing like openly ridiculing a pandemic that killed millions of people] and “DID YOU KNOW THAT JIM AND KEITH ARE NON-BINAIRY?   our 3000 year old space wolves are really woke! 🚀🐺”, [despite having male names and wearing male clothes and being played by cisgender men]  Like, OKAY, now is the time to shut the hell up 🙂

(Also we don’t care if and when and where TIX wore that DJ Austronaut costume or not. How about you rely on a good song/gimmick instead of pulling some more extraneous BULLSHIT?!)

Eurotwitter still lapped it all up, ofc, as if we needed more proof you need to fail an IQ test to be a part of that community. The Casuals *and* Radio DJs I will point out  completely ignored Norway, and instead were discussing the amazing entries from the UK and Serbia, two songs that *did* go viral because they were, in addition to great acts, ALSO great songs! 😁

but sure, secure that top 10 so NRK doesn’t have to learn from their mistakes and can FINALLY get their overdue NQ in 2023, I guess.

everyones like "ugh not another mike centered chapter im sick of seeing him" regarding the last few pages of burnt bridges and on one hand i get it, like eternal flame was a VERY long chapter and heavily mike-focused, ntm how awful and frustrating it was seeing him go through the same unhealthy patterns of behaviour (pushing his friends away, idolizing sandy, treating lucy unfairly) and how any progress he made with lucy in that chapter was instantly undone the second sandy called back. that being said though it's like... from a narrative perspective it makes sense that so far we're mostly seeing mike's guilt and reaction to the consequences of his actions immediately after we got a chapter that almost exclusively focused on him fucking up lol. im excited to see what direction this chapter takes and i wish people didnt just turn everything into a mike bashfest!!

no hate to people who are sick of mike, cuz like, I Get It, but can you imagine if this chapter had just stayed with the jordon-rachel crew. it would have been such a letdown! the story needs to linger on this big crazy thing that just happened in the last chapter! and it can’t linger on Lucy because we already KNOW all of her feelings on the whole thing -- it was very obvious how upset she was by the whole ordeal. we also know what she’s going to do from here on out: go back to ignoring and staying away from Mike. 

on the other hand, it’s NOT entirely obvious what Mike feels about it. he clearly has mixed feelings, but we’re not entirely sure to what degree he feels as though he fucked up. we have SOME idea of how he’s going to act moving forward, but not a lot. also idk about anyone else but i am SO stoked to see Mike and Augustus interact lmfao, like, they’re both so different and don’t really have any personal history between the two of them!!! 

but anyways i completely agree that eternal flame was really hard insofar as Mike... being.... just, like, extremely difficult to have to Look At. he kept doing things that were SO BAD...... but i need him to grow as a character and he’s not going to do that if he doesn’t get focus in the comic u_u

Totally missed the nonny time! However I actually came here because I need a spoonful of good analysis to cheer me up. I was rewatching Glee lately (I'm the nonny who is around your age :D) and had the bad idea to go and check the reviews of the episodes done at that time by tvline and sites like that. The amount of hate I saw for Blaine was so bad I actually felt sick, they didn't like Kurt either but for Blaine it was bashfest on every episode. And I don't understand the reason behind it. Why?

Well, Nonny, to answer your question - some people hate joy.  **shrugs**

Ah, TVLine, so, fun story about that...  there was this one writer, Michael Ausiello, who hated Klaine.  Cause he was a dick who hated joy apparently.  And because he had a hard on for Karofsky -- maybe bullies seek out other bullies? I have no idea.  

Anyway, I believe it was him for both of these stories.  The first time -- he wrote something in his blog about Kurt taking Adam to Will and Emma’s office.  And Ryan Murphy shut that shit down, spoiling his own show, talking about how Kurt takes Blaine, they sing a duet together, and make out in a car.  And we were like -- wtf??? Like, seriously, we didn’t even believe Ryan, but we got it confirmed, and then it aired.  But really, RM spoiled his own show to shut that idiot up. 

The second story is later on when there was a casting for two frat boys who have a scene who think the people they’re talking to are gay.  Now, in actuality, this was for Sweet Dreams, and it was a scene with Finn and Puck.  But This dude thought it was Adam and Kurt because clearly that was a romance for the ages right there.  Boy he looked like an idiot after that.  

Anyway, go read the After Ellen recaps, those are a delight, and much more positive, even when pointing out the nonsense.  Keep in mind that after the first season, it started being ‘cool’ to trash Glee, so that’s what a lot of those sites did.  I don’t know what got their panties in a twist, but always remember -- Darren doesn’t give a fuck, Ryan Murphy definitely doesn’t give a fuck, and neither should you -- love what you love and leave the joyless dickbags to their own misery.
