I’ll admit I’m getting a little concerned at how popular Tubi is getting. Like, autocorrect recognizes it as a proper noun

Purple Liquor
I figured I'd start posting a bit more of my writing here :)
The near empty bottle of vodka dangled uselessly from his fingers. The glass neck was slimy with his own slobber. Hacker had lost control of his basic motor functions a long time ago, but his grip stayed tight on the only thing that gave him life right now.
His mind was bleary. His thoughts bounced dully inside of his pounding head before it seemed like they fell out. If he tried to collect himself, all he would hear inside his mind would be the laughter.
He’d lost. Again.
He didn’t even know why he’d felt so surprised.
And so he simply chose not to think. The bottle tilted up and moisture reached his mouth. The taste was long dulled by his drunkenness, but his throat burned as he swallowed sloppily. A satisfied sigh left his chest.
He clipped his shoulder hard on the doorframe. Was that doorway always so small? He stopped to glare at it beside him, but his gaze couldn’t seem to focus. His eyelids were so heavy. Hacker wasn’t even sure which way this door led to until the bitter cold air of his prison invaded his nostrils.
Boots stumbled and dragged on rough ground, catching on pebbles and jagged roots. He peered down his nose at the puffs of vapor from his breath until he felt cross eyed.
Purple used to be his favorite color. But purple on the ground, seared across the sky, painted across the landscape…Hacker could puke looking at it now. Or maybe that was the alcohol.
Another hard swallow of the liquor. It could quite possibly be from his current state, but the mountains ahead of him stretched awfully far into the sky. He sneered. Their stature was impressive, but the rock was soft. Crumbling. They wouldn’t even be a landmark soon. They - Mount Rigoletto, Etney, and Julius, despite being supposedly immovable statues of nature and code, served no better purpose than trodding ground for the matted-fur mountain goats that shat upon them.
Hacker wretched at the thought of the goats, his mindless wandering harshly interrupted by the primal need to bend over, clutching at his spasming core. This whole dismal site displayed similar traits. The trees bore no fruit or leaves of any kind, but they refused to be felled, stubbornly holding fast to the rock-hard ground. The acids they had soaked in over time made burning them fatal.
The moonlight flashed against the glass, the bottle lifting once more. There was no heat or life-giving sun rays here. Only dry, treacherous ditches where there used to be streams of water.
“This miserable piece of lint site,” Hacker spat, wiping vodka off his chin with a rough swipe of his knuckles.
He took some kind of misstep and swayed on clumsy feet. He glanced about the barren area, hoping nobody had seen, taking care not to twist too fast. He felt dizzy. Yes, he was alone. Hacker tried to chuckle but all that came out was a wheeze. He’d forgotten he’d sent Buzz and Delete away.
Why should they stay? This dismal desert place was all he’d ever rule, and his subjects, hairy, smelly goats and sand spiders. No, they could leave him alone, just as he’d always be.
Hazy memories overtook his vision. Empty threats, broken promises, meaningless lies, uncontrollable anger. Even with all of his determination, his intelligence, and cunning, he always was sent staggering back to fall onto the rough, lifeless, purple ground.
Shaking green hands raised the bottle to his lips. The moon’s reflection in the glass stung his eyes, making them water. Nothing quenched his need to drown himself. Through the moisture in his eyes, he could see that his liquor was all gone.
A guttural scream split the air. The glass flung from his cold, nearly numb fingers in a burst of violent rage and shattered upon the dirt. The crunching of the shards against the ground amplified his uneven footsteps. The sound filled him with hatred. Why, he probably looked like a cad, like a toddler learning how to walk, like…a drunk.
“I’m not drunk!” Hacker yelled.
But Hacker knew he was. He just couldn’t see right, no matter how he squinted. His insides churned and his movements didn’t feel like his own. And he was alone.
“I’m not drunk!” he bellowed again. He didn’t even know why.
Not even his own voice would echo back to him from those shadowy purple mountains.
He sunk to the dirt, an overwhelming flow of emotion rising in his chest. He watched his own fingernails scrape through the pebbles, trembling as his hands lifted the powdery soil. His hands, built for work from building, to delicate circuitry, to binding difficult metals, now as useless as the mirage of wildlife in front of him. His drunkenness only worsened the shaking and loss of control from his power depletion. His eyes stung again as dread built to a knot in his throat, a harsh truth realized. He fit in here.
Hacker whispered so quietly he hardly was even sure he said it out loud. “I belong here.”
The air felt still and tense as Buzz watched the larger cyborg’s shoulders shudder. Sobs reached his audio receptors even from this distance. While he was no stranger to his boss’s fits, it still felt wrong somehow to watch as Hacker sank impossibly closer to the ground. He should’ve thought to hide their alcohol somewhere after this scheme’s failure.
“Buzzy…shouldn’t we go help ‘im?” Delete’s voice was a harsh whisper.
Buzz glanced beside him. The younger bot was curled up tight against the rock, trembling from fear and from the freezing wind that was particularly vengeful today. He peered over the top, wary of their boss’s wrath should he catch them despite his wish to comfort him.
“Nah. ‘Da boss told us to leave. He wants to be alone.”
“I thought he fired us.”
Buzz rolled his eyes. “He always says ‘dat. He just wants to be alone.” Hacker had sounded particularly meaningful this time, his tone strangely depressed and his order missing a malicious threat. But the bot was trusting his experience to guide him, and that meant that soon the boss would forget all about that.
Delete looked at him in confusion. “Then why’re we here, if we’re not helpin’ ‘im?” “We are, Dee-Dee. He’s plastered right now, so he’ll need help soon, after he’s done cryin’ and all ‘dat.” He looked back to the borg curled on the ground, far enough away that he remained ignorant of their presence, and close enough that they could hear shaky whimpering. “Y’know, after the cold gets to ‘im more. When you drink a whole bottle a’ licker it gets hard to remember where you’s at. You wouldn’t know, you’s never been drunk.”

OK, a few notes, aimed at curious non-coders who'd like an idea of what can or can't be done with this:
It's a PHP library. It's used on the backend, as part of the software that runs on Tumblr or Twitter or Craigslist or Neopets or whoever's servers and spits out the raw webpage content that your browser ends up displaying.
This means it has very little to do with frontend UI tweaks or browser extensions like XKit, whose extra functionality is pretty much bolted onto the page after the fact via JavaScript that runs in your browser. Not only was this written to serve some pretty different purposes, PHP is for server-side use; this isn't code you can slap onto someone else's site by running a doohicky on your own computer. It also isn't a full-fledged app like Wordpress for site admins to run on a server as its own standalone thing.
So what is it? Basically, a bunch of prewritten, adaptable code that backend devs can use to make life muuuuch easier when they're coding the parts of their apps that handle content feeds. Retrieving chunks of them, combining them, filtering them, reordering them, caching them, all before the end results are served up to visitors. The code Tumblr's released so far is almost 100% agnostic about what that content might be, where it might come from, or what format the data's in. Like, out of the box, a couple of the fancier sorting tools are just aware enough of "blogs" and "posts" to throttle stuff that might hog an algorithmic feed? But that's about it for now. The bones of all this are pretty flexible, and most of it would be just as suited for wrangling, say, a YouTube recommendation stream.
IMO the niftiest (and, ok, most messy-ass bitch, but in a fun way) parts I've seen are its solutions to... call 'em general plumbing headaches. Like "if we're filtering a feed, e.g. yeeting posts from blocked users out of searches, how should we handle auto-grabbing a few extra items to potentially fill out each page of results? Can we fine-tune how aggressively to do it, if some filters will be weeding a lot more posts than others?" Or "wait, so the dashboard is paginated by post ID, likes are paginated by date liked, and search results are paginated by... witchcraft? Is there some unified way to just treat it all as 'wherever we left off' in each of these feeds we're mixing and matching? Can we make the damn computer figure out when & how to fetch more from each?" Or, idk, big sets of posts that get algorithmically sorted, and how to keep the post order from jumping around as they're loaded or reloaded. Yeah, boring details. But making all those parts (AND caching!!!) play nice together is the absolute devil. That's stuff you want already solved when you sit down to slice and dice some sexy custom dashboards.
Interestingly, I'm not sure whether or not this library is involved in aggregating your followed blogs' posts into the raw stream that powers the dash. Whatever's handling that may be more like a data source that these tools are pulling from; they seem more focused on manipulating streams once you've got 'em, and inserting bits of one into another, like the way recommendation carousels occupy a slot on your dash that might otherwise have been a post. IDK how they'd perform trying to combine the latest from hundreds of blogs at once.
So third-party devs who can't wait to unleash the full power of Outlook email filters on the Tumblr Experience™ may still be stuck with the "/users/dashboard" endpoint of this hellsite's API... whose terms of service include a blanket prohibition on reordering dashboard items. Or inserting/removing posts from any content stream. In fact, if I'm reading this ToS right, they just open-sourced a library that we are pretty much forbidden from using on any of the data streams provided by their API. So... guess it's a good thing these tools are designed for all kinds of uses.
StreamBuilder: our open-source framework for powering your dashboard.
Today, we’re abnormally jazzed to announce that we’re open-sourcing the custom framework we built to power your dashboard on Tumblr. We call it StreamBuilder, and we’ve been using it for many years.
First things first. What is open-sourcing? Open sourcing is a decentralized software development model that encourages open collaboration. In more accessible language, it is any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit.
What, then, is StreamBuilder? Well, every time you hit your Following feed, or For You, or search results, a blog’s posts, a list of tagged posts, or even check out blog recommendations, you’re using this framework under the hood. If you want to dive into the code, check it out here on GitHub!
StreamBuilder has a lot going on. The primary architecture centers around “streams” of content: whether posts from a blog, a list of blogs you’re following, posts using a specific tag, or posts relating to a search. These are separate kinds of streams, which can be mixed together, filtered based on certain criteria, ranked for relevancy or engagement likelihood, and more.
On your Tumblr dashboard today you can see how there are posts from blogs you follow, mixed with posts from tags you follow, mixed with blog recommendations. Each of those is a separate stream, with its own logic, but sharing this same framework. We inject those recommendations at certain intervals, filter posts based on who you’re blocking, and rank the posts for relevancy if you have “Best stuff first” enabled. Those are all examples of the functionality StreamBuilder affords for us.
So, what’s included in the box?
The full framework library of code that we use today, on Tumblr, to power almost every feed of content you see on the platform.
A YAML syntax for composing streams of content, and how to filter, inject, and rank them.
Abstractions for programmatically composing, filtering, ranking, injecting, and debugging streams.
Abstractions for composing streams together—such as with carousels, for streams-within-streams.
An abstraction for cursor-based pagination for complex stream templates.
Unit tests covering the public interface for the library and most of the underlying code.
What’s still to come
Documentation. We have a lot to migrate from our own internal tools and put in here!
More example stream templates and example implementations of different common streams.
If you have questions, please check out the code and file an issue there.

Hey I noticed you linked the BLM website in a post but can you tell your followers not to donate to the organization
The donation link the website has is secure act blue and secure act blue funds democratic campaigns
So for the past 7 years all that money they collected over $1 billion probably none of that has touched the black community
Hoo boy so while I agree with the gist of this ask, there’s some misleading info here:
ActBlue is not giving BLM donations to the DNC, and this claim has been debunked multiple times by reliable sources. However, the BLM Global Network Foundation has faced questioning and controversy this year thanks to their nonprofit partnerships and a lack of transparency. I always advocate for donating as small-scale and locally as you can. I’ll put the rest of this analysis (with sources linked) under a read more, since it’s LONG (but it took me forever to put together so pls read thx ❤️).
ActBlue is an online fundraising platform that is not explicitly related to the US Democratic Party, but which only funds left-leaning and progressive candidates and organizations. It’s a tech company. It earns money by functioning as this service, so yes, your donations help fund it. Organizations and candidates pay ActBlue a 3.95% processing fee for donations, but the rest of the money donated does go to the organization or specific candidate. ActBlue is also registered as a PAC (political action committee) which is a whole can of Political Worms I don’t want to open, but that means it has to report to the Federal Election Commission/the IRS which is a positive because it results in transparency of conduit funding.
So...96.05% of the money you donate through the BLM website SHOULD go to the BLM Foundation. It does NOT go to the DNC.  The person who started this rumor (from a since-deleted Facebook post which led to a viral video) is a member of a Students for Trump organization, and other conservative pundits picked up on it and posted it. It just isn’t true, and has been debunked many times.
HOWEVER there’s still a problem. It’s hard to say where the money donated to the BLM site actually goes, and that issue is directly related to tax laws and nonprofit organization status in the US. There were questions and lawsuits about this earlier this year. There is an interesting loophole in ActBlue’s policy that states that “contributions...which are not cashed or affirmatively refused will be kept by ActBlue and used generally to support its social welfare activities”. In other words, ActBlue will keep money that is not cashed by the organizations within 60 days and use it to “generally support its social welfare activities”. No, I don’t know exactly what that means--it’s probably used by ActBlue for program costs, or is reallocated to its general fund (which gives grants to nominee funds, the Flip the Senate campaign, etc) but it does mean that money doesn’t go to those organizations, even if it was donated to them, if the organizations don’t claim it. Then, in a Reddit AMA in June, a BLM Foundation organizer provided less than satisfying information about where the money they fundraise goes. It’s difficult to find that info online thanks to the way nonprofits function within American tax law.
It’s important to note here that the BLM Foundation and BLM Global Network are not necessarily associated with individual community activist organizations, protests, or the general BLM social movement. There’s plenty of discourse on this you can research on your own if you want. Google is free.
What’s important here is that the BLM Foundation operates as a nonprofit with a “parent” charity. From 2016 to this year BLM worked with Thousand Currents, which “fundraises grassroots groups led by women, youth and Indigenous Peoples”. In July they switched to a “working relationship” with TIDES, which is a “philanthropic partner and nonprofit accelerator dedicated to building a world of shared prosperity and social justice”.
I’m not going to get into my personal feelings about large scale nonprofit organizations and the oxymoron of conscious capitalism (because organizations like this are essentially venture capitalists for nonprofits imo), but personally I think the larger and more decentralized the organization (or parent organization, in this case), the less effective your donation. More on that later.
Essentially though, Thousand Currents and TIDES are organizations that focus on fundraising and infrastructure and then fund smaller grassroots groups that might not have the infrastructure or foothold to do that for themselves. This is not uncommon in the nonprofit world. I work for a nonprofit that ran though a university foundation and an established local nonprofit for ten years before we got our 501(c)(3) designation and started functioning independently. It’s not abnormal that the BLM Foundation works with an organization like that, given BLM is pretty decentralized by design and is also a fairly new organization (2013/2014).
Thousand Currents and TIDES have 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. It can be difficult for smaller and newer nonprofits (as well as nonprofits that function outside of the US but which rely on donations from the US or other countries outside of where they’re headquartered) to gain that status, so they often work under a larger organization. 501(c)(3) status means financial records have to be made public, which means anyone can access the financial records for Thousand Currents and TIDES. You can also find tax filings for the BLM Foundation, but it’s less comprehensive (the most recent I could find was Form 990 from 2017, but maybe I’m not looking in the right place). Anyone can request tax documents from 501(c)(3) nonprofits.
This is getting complicated, right? Welcome to American tax law and nonprofit organizational hierarchies functioning under late stage capitalism. i’m not trying to throw the BLM Foundation under the bus here, because honestly this is just how it goes with a lot of organizations in the US. I don’t think it means you shouldn’t support them. But it gets pretty twisted up. Maybe you made a $20 donation to BLM back in July and now you’re wondering where the hell it went. Here’s the pipeline: your donation goes through ActBlue (which takes 3.95%, or .79 cents of your donation) to TIDES, which then directs that money to BLM. They know how much money is coming to them for BLM because ActBlue differentiates fundraising campaigns--the BLM money going to Thousand Currents or TIDES is separated from the funds coming to them for, say, CLIMA or the Farm to School Network . However, Thousand Currents and TIDES probably take a cut to support their operating costs, too. I couldn’t find data on this, so this is conjecture and I’m not sure how much--this statement is just based on knowing how nonprofits and fundraising usually work.
So, the money stream from you to BLM is like this: You------> ActBlue (takes a 3.95% cut) ------> Thousand Currents or TIDES (probably takes a cut, then directs the money to)------>  BLM -----> Whatever BLM uses it for. Despite that strange loophole in ActBlue’s policy, Thousand Currents appeared to be claiming the donations and directing them to BLM (as of 2018...will be interesting to see tax stats from this year since their move to TIDES after unprecedented donations).
BLM does have a huge grassroots organizing fund that began this June in response to overwhelming donations following the murder of George Floyd. The fund provides grants up to $500,000 to smaller grassroots organizations and activists, as well as educational curriculum and political platforms. Their grant campaign is supported by TIDES, which provides the infrastructure and tax-exempt funding conduit needed for such a large scale effort. I’m guessing most of the money they’re fundraising goes to that fund. A chunk definitely goes to paying employees, running their website, and funding outreach and education.
So ALL THAT BEING SAID, I would always say donate directly to bail funds, mutual aid funds, legal fee funds, and local activism organizations before donating to a larger, all-encompassing charity or organization. If you can Venmo someone you know and you know where that money goes, that’s always the best.
Venmo accounts, gofundme campaigns, cashapp accounts, paypal accounts...that’s often what smaller scale organizations and activists are using on a local level and it’s generally collected and distributed more directly. The BIPOC and COVID mutual aid funds where I live are active on Facebook and Instagram and operate based on requests for help from community members that are posted on Google documents available to the public. Here is a good example of a grassroots COVID mutual aid fund that is directing A LOT of money locally and transparently--there are similar funds and organizations like this worldwide for COVID, BLM, and beyond.
The biggest impact you can make always comes at the community level--you should do some research into figuring out what’s going on in your area. There’s almost always something nearby, even if you live in a rural area or smaller town like I do, and if there’s not, hey--you could start something! Engage in your community and put your money into that, or into other communities in need. Pay attention to stuff going around on Twitter and Instagram--a lot of community organizing is facilitated there.
I included the BLM link in the original post because the website is a good place to learn about actions around the globe, organizing basics, and has a lot of up to date news and educational materials. I advocated for donating to bail funds, mutual aid funds, water projects, and local activist organizations and I stand by that. I’m not saying you shouldn’t donate to the BLM Global Network or other larger-scale foundations, but the conduit of money to cause is usually not as direct. I still don’t think it’s a bad thing to donate to them.
But ALSO don’t spread straight-up misinformation like this ask does. ActBlue is a fundraising platform and it’s not stealing the money you send to BLM and giving it to Biden or the DNC. It’s a whole lot more complicated than that, and this is a great way to dissuade people from donating money to progressive organizations who use ActBlue because it’s an easy, accessible online fundraising platform. Funny how right-wing pundits latched onto this so quickly, huh?
Feel free to correct me or add more info. I’m white and operating within US-centric organizing circles. But PLEASE give some sources if you do have corrections or arguments and PLEASE do a google search before you spread stuff like this.
_______________________________________________________________________
TL;DR: ActBlue is a fundraising platform, it is not stealing your money and giving it to the DNC. The money you donate to BLM goes to that organization, though it is a meandering path from donation to impact. Donate to bail funds, mutual aid organizations, legal fee funds, local activism organizations, etc., over larger organizations. Invest in your own communities, and directly in black communities, and always do your research.

Tears In The Rain
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe…All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.”
-- Blade Runner (David Peebles & Rutger Hauer)
The radar screen manufacturers -- RCA, GE, and others -- started jonesin’ for cash when the end of WWII dried up all that sweat & easy military materiel money.
Commercial consumer television existed before WWII in England, the UK, and Germany but it was a super-expensive technology confined to a few very wealthy homes in a few select markets or in Germany’s case, public venues such as beer halls.
Radar screens and TV tubes were basically different applications of the same thing, so the radar tube manufacturers shifted their production to TV sets pitched to post-war consumers as the must-have status symbol.
Problem: Said TV sets needed something to show and while there was live national network and local programing, most early stations filled their air time with old movies / cartoons / serials / comedy shorts.
That was the cultural gestalt I and other boomers grew up in during the 1950s, an era when much of the on air media dated back to the 1930s.
I’ve always been more culturally observant and curious than others in my generational cohort, and while they blandly / blindly watched Bugs Bunny and Popeye and Betty Boop and Our Gang, I was asking my parents and grandmother and aunt about the odd details I saw in old media (it didn’t hurt that we had a beautiful art deco edition of Collier’s Encyclopedia that my grandparents acquired in the 1920s in the house as well).
As a result I knew far more about the Depression and Prohibition and war rationing and other major cultural events and touchstones prior to our generation than did most other boomers.
When our history and social studies textbooks finally introduced these topics in junior high and high school, I was already intimately familiar with them.
As a result, I fell in love with the Marx Brothers and continue to love them to this day.
And while I watched and re-watched The Three Stooges, once I discovered Laurel and Hardy I left Larry, Moe, Curly, Shemp, Joe, and Curly Joe behind.
But the thing is, to fully understand and appreciate and know and love the Marx Brothers, you have to understand the pop culture of their era.
The same applies -- to a lesser degree -- to Laurel and Hardy.
The key difference is that The Three Stooges are pure physical mayhem:  There is nothing to understand.
They are imbeciles who inflict pain on themselves and one another, and while far, far inferior to Groucho / Harpo / Chico or Stan & Ollie, they will outlast them.
Anybody from any era or any culture can access The Three Stooges, but if you don’t understand a “gat” (short for gatling gun) is 1930s slang for an automatic pistol, then Groucho’s line upon seeing a automatic in a drawer with a pair of derringers -- “This gat’s had gittens” -- is absolute gibberish.
Likewise Laurel and hardy require some understanding of how American cultural values functioned in the 1920s and 30s; if you don’t get that, a lot of their humor is lost.
Our Gang / Little Rascals ages better because kids are kids and much of what they do is universal.
But even there much of their references have to do with the Depression or WWII rationing and scrap drives and if you don’t grasp that then those jokes zoom past you.
The situation isn’t confined to pre-WWII media, either.
The Marx Brothers and Laurel & Hardy might possibly be recognized by the current generation as something their parents and grandparents watched, but the Ritz Brothers are forgotten by all except those who specialize in comedy / pop culture history.  Wheeler & Woolsey are even more obscure, and Olsen & Johnson obscurer still, and if you’ve ever heard of Lum & Abner my hat’s off to you.
And holy shamolley, those are just the comedians we’re talking about.  There’s a whole universe of pop culture lost as fans of old B-Westerns die off, not to mention minor pop stars of music and small movies in the 1930s / 40s / 50s.
Silent movies have virtually disappeared from pop culture today; they are things of the past, historical artefacts.
Thanks to the Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg and Comic Book + and Digital Comics Museum and other sites, literally tens of thousands of hours of old radio shows and countless pulp magazines and comic books and other media are available, but who accesses them today except the truly die-hard genre fans or the pop culture historians?
Why morn their passing?
As Theodore Sturgeon famously observed, isn’t 90% of everything crap?
Yes, it is.
But that doesn’t make it any less of the cultural gestalt, the zeitgeist of the era than the few timeless gems that shine through.
. . .
As pop culture historian Jaime Weinman points out, the boomer generation -- the late 1940s to early 1960s -- offered a particularly fallow time for pop culture.
We enjoyed access to previous generations of pop culture, brought to us in curated form.  Even if those curators were costumed local cartoon show and horror movie hosts, we got at least some understanding of what led up to our own generation.
Weinman observes that because of technical broadcast reasons, only a few avenues fell open to new programming -- and that new programming could be rerun again and again to fill in gaps in local stations’ air time.
It created a generation with remarkably deep pop culture roots, even if relative few members of that generation were aware of them.
We were, to some degree or another, aware of a vast library of older pop culture media and icons and idioms.
Ironically, this began changing in the late 1960s, slowly at first, but coming full flower in the mid-1970s as music cassette recordings allowed us to create our own playlists off radio shows and record players, and cable TV stopped being something for the hinterlands and started penetrating urban markets, thus literally uniting the country with first dozens then hundreds and a virtually infinite number of channels and streaming options.
But the real nail in the golden age of pop culture’s coffin was the introduction of home TV recordings and time shifting, meaning we no longer needed to wait for curated programing but could watch what we wanted when we wanted.
Despite a wider range of options, older material became less and less popular, and the lack of curation is a big part of that.
With nobody to supply some sort of context -- even goofy horror host context -- older examples of pop culture became less accessible.
The newer generations look less to the past, more to the future.
. . .
As I’ve written before, endings fascinate me.
Right now I’m seeing a generational shift with the boomer generation’s pop culture rapidly fading to be replaced by Generation Z and the generations to follow them.
I look at the boomer era and wonder how much will survive.
Very little, I’m afraid.
And that includes losing some of the best our era had to offer.
For example, how many people today know of The Firesign Theatre?
In the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, they performed absolutely brilliant satirical comedy on radio and recordings.  Their album Don’t Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me The Pliers received a Hugo nomination for best sci-fi drama presentation of 1970.
I still laugh when I hear their recordings -- but I laugh because I lived in that era.
Their humor relies heavily on topical subjects and the counter culture of the late 1960s-70s.  They were very much a Southern California phenomenon…and thanks to radio and TV and movies of that era, that culture permeated the entire country.
But that era is gone, and now when I listen to them I laugh, but to use a specific example I laugh because I know who Ralph Williams was and what he meant to Southern California pop culture in that time.
You don’t get that, you don’t get the joke, and the brilliance of The Firesign Theatre’s humor is lost.
Like tears in the rain.
. . .
Cheech y Chong will survive, because like The Three Stooges, their appeal lies in their basic stupidity.
True, many of their routines make contemporary pop culture references, but material like “Dave’s Not Here” is timeless.
You don’t even have to get the drug references to find it hilarious.
Conversely, the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers will fade.
As characters, they are of a particular time and place:  Hippie dippie San Francisco.
They can’t survive transplantation, as was demonstrated in their last few stories.
Now there’s an animated series that brings them from the swinging 60s to to Trump 20s and it just doesn’t work.
The creators Don’t Get The Joke.
I don’t blame them for failing to get the joke, but updating the Freak Bros. would be like updating the Marx Brothers.
It can be done, but only badly.
. . .
Music will always have musicians and buffs who will track every obscure item they can find, but a lot of the best and most innovative work will be forgotten by mainstream culture.
This is because in many case, the best musicians are way ahead of the rest of their field, and their innovations are only made palatable by others who take them up and reinterpret them in a way to make them accessible to contemporary audiences.
Frank Zappa, as much as I personally love him as a cultural icon, will fade fast after the last boomer dies.
Basically, he didn’t make singable music.
There are a lot of brilliant innovations in his work, but his lyrics are so idiosyncratic as to be impossible to cover.
That, and a lot of his lyrics and subject matter would not be comfortably acceptable today.
Yeah, when he did it he was trying to make a satirical point, but when modern audiences hear it, they don’t hear the sharp commentary on the culture of his time, they hear songs that seem to glorify sexual violence and racial bigotry.
Most of the people who decry so-called “cancel culture” today are hypocrites trying to justify their own offenses, but there will be creators and components of pop culture who simply aren’t going to make the cut.
I can show you on paper why radio’s Amos And Andy was a brilliantly written show.
You’re not going to get modern audiences to accept white actors doing blackface…or black voice.
Zappa is acceptable today because there are still enough people who get the joke.
When we’re gone, so are most of his songs (his instrumentals hopefully will live on).
. . .
Quentin Tarantino’s star is already starting to set.
His copious dropping of the n-bomb seemed daring and edgy in the early to mid-90s now seems boorish and tiresome.
People don’t want to listen to that, and how can you make them watch what they don’t want to watch?
The Hateful Eight might endure since it gives a sorta context for its racial animosity, ditto Django Unchained, but even they will be problematic due to Tarantino’s Red Apple universe -- a world similar enough to ours to be mistaken for it at first glance but ultimately completely different.
Inglorious Basterds will ultimately fail the history smell test by audiences who will perceive it as wildly inaccurate.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood probably has the least problematic elements in it, but it too is so firmly set in a specific time and place that only those who lived it can truly appreciate it.
When we’re gone, who can follow the pop culture breadcrumbs that lead us through the movie?
Tarantino is a brilliant writer / director, and film students in the know will study his movies to see how he pulled them off…
…but they’re going to move far past him.
(He may enjoy a revival 50 years from now, the way certain film makers get rediscovered a half century after their deaths.  If so, it will be by people able to see past the pop culture references to the real story beneath.)
. . .
Roger Corman and other exploitation film makers aren’t going to as welcomed once the boomer generation departs.
Boomers see them as transgressive artists, tweaking the nose of so-called respectable society.
New generations will see they as creeps who exploited violence and sexism.
(And we shouldn’t mourn its loss; most of it is soft-core pornography.  But there were a few shining moments that shine only if you know the context, and that is fading fast.)
. . .
Superheroes probably won’t die out just as Westerns never completely died out, but like Westerns their audience is rooted in a very particular time and place.
I mentioned B-Westerns earlier; once upon a time there were literally dozens of B-Western stars, each with their own face base and merchandising and movies…
…and now there are no more B-Westerns.
We remember Roy Rogers because he’s culturally referenced elsewhere (and Gene Autry because he left a great big museum in his name).
B-Westerns’ success was based on fulfilling audience expectations, essentially giving the same thing they’d seen before, only slightly different.
Superheroes have degenerated into that.
In their current form, they’re deconstructions based on what a previous generation’s pop culture produced.
The superhero market has been supersaturated in the past and collapsed before.
This time when it collapses it will take along countless near-identical characters and storylines.
What emerges from it will be as different from the current iteration of superheroes as The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly was from My Pal Trigger.
. . .
Likewise, if James Bond is to survive, there will be a drastic retooling of the property.
It is possible; Sherlock Holmes has been retooled often.
The original Connery Bonds, the ones we consider to be “iconic” will eventually be viewed as an embarrassment.
The world and its attitudes are changing, and while there will always be room for heroes, audiences will be a bit more discerning about which heroes they want.
The attitudes of the original Bonds will not fly with future generations.
. . .
Finally, one prospect that will make it into the future, though not necessarily on its own strengths, no matter how significant they are.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 has skewered pop culture via bad movies since 1988.
Supported by a legion of fans, there are several books and websites that annotate all the references found in the various MST3K series.
Scholars 500 years in the future will thank these fans and researchers for their efforts.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 and its various annotated spinoffs will be the Rosetta stone of 20th century pop culture.
It will provide a context to make the jokes understandable, but more importantly than that, it will open a window into what people were thinking and feeling in the last decade of the 20th century.
It and the films it spoofed will be studied with near Talmudic intensity (you think I jest; I do not).  They’ll provide insight that will help future generations and cultures understand this one.

Thoughts on Higurashi Gou Ep12
First things first, I’ve finally gotten around to getting a subscription to AnimeLab so I’m not just pirating everything I watch each season, so that’s cool, lol. I can’t really justify getting multiple streaming service subscriptions, though, so I’ll still probably pirate anything that this site isn’t streaming. But thankfully they’re streaming this series, so I can watch it guilt-free.
Anyway, thoughts under the cut.
I honestly wasn’t expecting them to continue following Minagoroshi in an almost 1:1 manner since we’re getting so close to the end of this arc, but the fact that there’s only one episode left before the next arc starts makes it pretty obvious that we’re going to get some real curveballs and a sudden ending in the next episode..
I think that in the original anime’s version of Minagoroshi, there were like three episodes left in the arc after what this one covered, so there’s no real way for them to actually cover all of that. But obviously this isn’t trying to faithfully adapt Minagoroshi from start to finish, so it’s just been a matter of time until things change.
Honestly, I feel like this episode is another example of how Gou has been functionally more of a remake than a lot of people probably want it to be. I’ve been seeing lots of people complaining about how the show’s been really boring because like 90% of it has been going over stuff from the VN, and that just really goes to show that they weren’t kidding about this being accessible for newcomers, and probably aimed at them first, and old fans second.
I also think it’s totally fine that they’ve really toned down the horror aspect of the series. I never really liked that the blood and gore became the big defining part of it’s cultural legacy and how people remember it, so I’m glad that Gou is more faithful to the focus on mystery and drama in the VN. There isn’t the same sort of slow-burn dread and paranoia, but that’s just something that a 24-episode anime split into 5-ish arcs fundamentally can’t do properly, so they’re going for a different sort of pacing and atmosphere that works more naturally here.
Anyway, since this episode was almost 1:1 with this part of Minagoroshi, there isn’t a whole lot to say there, but I still spent the whole episode being worried that everyone in the main crew was two seconds away from murdering everyone in the village council, lol. It didn’t help that my memory of Minagoroshi is really fuzzy, so I couldn’t remember if everyone was acting this way originally, but I think it was all pretty faithful to the VN.
There are still a few notable differences from the VN, though, like Ooishi just randomly showing up at the meeting to creepily observe Keiichi, which I think is original to Gou. Considering that he also had that ominous final scene in the last episode, I’m really suspicious of what the hell’s going on with him in this arc. I thought maybe he’d show up here to stop Keiichi’s plans to save Satoko, or to reveal something about what’s going on with her and Teppei, but he didn’t really do anything. He also seemed like he was maybe supportive of Keiichi’s whole plan to rally the village, so I just have no idea what he’s thinking at this point, lol.
I also think the first scene with the damaged shrine might be original, and I don’t really know what to make of it. It might have just been there so we could see some random villagers talk about how everyone secretly thinks that Satoko and Teppei will be the victims of the curse this year, but I feel like there must be more to it. For one thing, I’m skeptical that it was actually Teppei who did it in the first place, but I also think the symbolism of a desecrated shrine is pretty heavy for a story like this.
Part of me’s still convinced that Teppei might already be dead, but honestly I’m less certain about that after how this episode went. We also didn’t even see Satoko at all, which is kinda worrying. Maybe she’ll wind up dead, but I’m not sure.
I guess the bottom line is that there’s only one episode left to this arc, so there’s only so much they could do at this point, and it’ll have to happen pretty quickly. So I at least think that part of the big divergence in this arc will involve the outcome of the village rallying together for Satoko. I thought at first that maybe this time around they’d fail in getting Oryo’s support, and the whole plan would fall apart, but things played out the same as the VN with her, so if something’s going to screw up the plan, it’s probably something else. And since Ooishi seemed kinda supportive of Keiichi here, maybe he’ll sit back and let them continue their protesting like in the VN, instead of breaking it up this time.
But other than that the obvious guess for how this will all fall apart at the last minute would be if we find out that Satoko and/or Teppei are already dead, which would immediately invalidate the entire protest.
Though I’m still also thinking that maybe they actually WILL succeed in saving Satoko, and it’ll lead to a deceptively happy ending where everything just falls apart afterwards due to some other reason, like in Minagoroshi. I doubt it’d be the exact same thing, though.
I guess a more or less happy ending could still happen with the Satoko situation if Teppei alone winds up dead, and Satoko just gets to go back to living with Rika afterward. Which would probably at least take less time to deal with than having the whole process of getting Satoko to speak out against Teppei and provide evidence of abuse to the CWS.
I still like my theory that all the main characters will survive this arc, and that this will lead to the future where teenage Rika gets murdered, but I’m not entirely confident about that at this point.
One thing that’s still bugging me, and is making it hard to predict exactly what’s going on, is that I can’t tell exactly what’s going through Rika’s head, and what she actually thinks is going on. She’s continuing to apparently remember and quote stuff Keiichi said in Minagoroshi, but even in the VN they established that she can’t remember that arc at all. There’s also the scene early in the episode that seems to imply that she’s suspicious of Takano, but the idea of her knowing about Takano being evil still feels really strange to me.
For one thing, it feels like in every arc thus far she’s done absolutely nothing to try and stop Takano’s plans, but it also feels like Rika is doing the exact same thing she did in Minagoroshi originally, where she assumes that in this type of arc the only thing they need to do to achieve a happy ending is save Satoko. But in Minagoroshi the whole point was that she *didn’t* know about Takano, so she didn’t realize until it was too late that saving Satoko wasn’t enough. But this time around it seems like even though she’s maybe aware that Takano’s evil, she’s still going with the idea that saving Satoko is all they need to do to achieve a happy ending. And she isn’t even saying anything to her friends to make them aware of what’s going on with Takano so they could at least prepare for it in advance instead of being caught off-guard by her.
Maybe this is just bad writing, but I still prefer to think that she doesn’t actually remember or know anything about Takano, and the show’s just been misleading old fans into assuming that she does. Which is why I came up with my theory that Gou’s whole story is an in-universe fictional story written by someone like Featherine that involves a fictional version of Rika who basically branches off from the level of knowledge and development she had around Tsumihoroboshi, before she learned about Takano. And that the happy future she told Hanyuu about isn’t actually Matsuribayashi, but an arc in Gou where we get a seemingly happy ending but Rika dies as a teenager anyway.
Either way, I’m still at least going with the theory that Takano isn’t the big obstacle this time around. If only just from a meta perspective of how it’d be the biggest way to change things up compared to the VN’s story, and how there’s just not really enough time to actually cover all the stuff that happened with her in the VN. There’s still the question of why she still seems to be the exact same person as in the VN, including having the name that she got after being adopted by her grandfather, but I still think a lot of this could be explained by having Gou be a fictionalized version of the Higurashi gameboard where the surface level of Takano’s character is the same, but her backstory has basically been retconned, either intentionally or because the person writing this doesn’t know about what’s going on with her.
And on the note of Takano, I still think this arc should end up providing more clues about what’s going on with her and Tomitake in each arc. They haven’t really done anything in this arc yet, but it’d be weird if we don’t get some more clues about them before the question arcs end and we start getting answers.
But we haven’t even gotten to the festival yet, and there’s only one episode left, so who even knows if we’ll get far enough in the timeline for anything to happen with them in the first place.
Anyway, I’ve been thinking more about all the different theories of what’s going on this time around, and where this is all going to go in the long run, and even though it’s too early for me to really be confident in anything, one idea I’ve been messing with is that, at least in the first two arcs, Keiichi was a lot more involved in the different murders than we’ve been lead to believe. Basically I just thought about the fact that he almost definitely hallucinated most of his fight with Rena, and I tried to see if I could really go wild with that sort of storytelling logic and apply it to anything else that’s happened.
This is mostly just me trying to see how far I can stretch this whole theory, so this is kind of a reach, but to begin with, it’s possible that Keiichi is the one who murdered Rika in the first two arcs. Maybe in Onidamashi he killed Rena and then remembered how Rika convinced him to trust her, and in his L5 state he decided that she must have been trying to get him killed, so he took the kitchen knife and went over and killed Rika [with Satoko being caught in the cross-fire].
My theory for him being potentially responsible for her death in Watadamashi ties into my similar idea that maybe in that arc, if not also in Onidamashi, he killed Takano and Tomitake. And then later in Watadamashi, Rika went full Bernkastel at him and revealed that she knew about Takano and Tomitake being dead, and he ended up snapping and killing her. One thing that’s been nagging at me about that whole sequence is that that episode ended with Satoko inviting him to play dodgeball with her and the other kids, but then at the start of the next episode she’s being suspicious of him and asking about if he was with Rika when she disappeared. Which might have just been Satoko lying, but there were other kids involved who could have vouched for Keiichi if he was with Satoko the whole time, so I think that they just lead us into assuming that he took up her dodgeball invitation, when in actuality he didn’t, and he went off and killed Rika in secret, which is why Satoko acted like she didn’t know what he was up to.
But going back earlier in Watadamashi, I think that after everyone left the Saiguden, what actually happened might have been that Keiichi succumbed to paranoia and attacked Takano and Tomitake off-screen, and then later on Mion called him on the phone pretending to be Shion, and got him to agree to a fake alibi that she made up to cover up what he did.
This might also shine more light on what happened behind the scenes with Mion and Shion after the festival, if what actually happened was that the village elders all more or less figured out that Keiichi killed Takano and Tomitake, and Mion snapped and murdered everyone after they started to suggest that he should get punished for it.
It always seemed a bit weird to me that multiple characters pressed Keiichi for info about if he was with not just Shion but also Takano and Tomitake at the festival, and that Mion/Shion was getting him to confirm that he met everyone on the shrine steps at the festival even though they all should have remembered that. So it might explain a lot of stuff if Keiichi was actually involved in their disappearances, and people started getting suspicious of him, while Mion worked to make up an alibi for him. The whole story of them fleeing the village might have also been made up by Mion as part of the alibi to explain why they disappeared.
I still think Rena killed them in Onidamashi because she thought Keiichi found out about her murders and that he’d ratted her out to them, but part of me’s still kinda suspicious of how Keiichi walks up to them at the festival but then just stops and walks away before actually talking to them, while Rena stares at him in the background. It makes me wonder if the way the scene was depicted wasn’t actually true.
In general I wonder how much Gou might be willing to intentionally depict false information to the audience about Keiichi’s POV. There’s a few scenes where he obviously hallucinates stuff, but maybe it extends more than that.
Looking at it from an Umineko perspective, Keiichi might be the viewpoint character in Gou, but that doesn’t necessarily make him the detective, so it’s possible that his perspective is sometimes just straight up misleading.
If we’re willing to doubt Keiichi’s perspective on things, I also think this raises a lot of questions about the Yamainu’s potential involvement in things. If he was the one who killed Rika and Satoko in Onidamashi, then maybe in that entire arc they didn’t actually do anything at all. And maybe in Watadamashi Rika didn’t even talk to a construction worker at all, and that was just Mion covering for Keiichi. He might have also hallucinated seeing them on the security camera footage due to being suspicious of them by that point, but it’s also possible that what he saw was just some random construction workers doing work near the Sonozaki property, and in his paranoid state he interpreted them as being evil and coming to murder them all. I don’t think he was directly involved in Mion and Satoko’s deaths, but I wonder if maybe the Yamainu weren’t involved either, and it really was more of a murder-suicide. The gun looked like it had been swapped out, but maybe someone other than the Yamainu did it, like Ooishi.
A lot of this is a big stretch, but this ties into a lot of little things that have been bugging me, including the fact that Keiichi has felt almost strangely ‘innocent’ in each arc thus far, compared to how he was in the VN. And looking at this from the perspective of Gou being an accessible mystery to new fans, it makes me think that maybe a lot of these mysterious incidents aren’t being caused by effectively unknown third parties, but by Keiichi himself.
It might be a bit cheap, but I think the first two arcs at least provided very understandable motives for why he’d kill Rika, which even new fans could catch onto. In Onidamashi she basically tried to gaslight him into trusting Rena which lead to him nearly getting murdered, and in Watadamashi she straight up started talking about Takano and Tomitake’s deaths while acting like she has a creepy amount of knowledge about everything going on. On a similar note, it’s starting to kinda worry me that there’s been several instances in Tataridamashi of him noticing that Rika keeps talking about stuff that he apparently said to her, that he has no memory of. It just feels like in every arc she keeps doing and saying stuff to him that from his perspective would be extremely suspicious.
I think Watadamashi also provided enough evidence for how he might have snapped and killed Takano and Tomitake off-screen, since he was acting weirdly hostile toward Takano during the entire Saiguden scene, and then freaked out at Shion/Mion when she talked about what Keiichi was up to at the festival and provided the cover story of him just hanging out with everyone on the steps. Even when Ooishi questioned him about what he was up to, he got defensive about it and complained about how everyone keeps asking him about his involvement with them.
It’d at least be a pretty simple way to have Takano and Tomitake be red herrings this time around, if we find out that they just keep getting killed by people who get suspicious about them.
Along these same lines, I have to wonder if maybe Teppei’s going to wind up dead because Keiichi killed him off-screen in some kind of paranoid fugue state that he might not even remember. But we’ll see how it goes.
One thing that I like about this theory, at least, is that it would play into how Gou seems to be designed specifically to mess with Rika’s preconceptions, and having Keiichi be responsible for a lot of what’s going on would really fuck with her, especially with how she’s acting in this arc. Honestly, I started thinking about the “Keiichi culprit theory” after how it started seeming like blatant dramatic irony that Rika was talking over and over again about trusting Keiichi. In basically each arc thus far she acts under the assumption that things will play out a certain way, and then they don’t, and in this arc the main thing she’s done has been trust Keiichi and assume that he’s going to resolve everything with Teppei peacefully and lead everyone to a happy ending.
Anyway this got a lot longer than I wanted it to, so I’ll stop there, lol.

So when you are looking at tone you are basically getting the whole story at least in the sense that you begin to see what the life is really going to be about. That is what it’s going to deal with this given that it is personality orientated you can see that there is security and uncertainties and action and meditation, and judgement there are these fundamental themes that are there and themes that are there that tone is finally evolved to express fully. Everything takes time and one of the most fascinating things about the nature of tone is that it is really two triangles, and of course that is its essential magic. That is these two triangles these fundamental binary is the binary that is going to give us our leftness and is going to give us our rightness. Nothing, nothing is more important than that.
There is something else that is really interesting about this I assume that leftness and rightness and its potential out of personality or design crystals is entirely conditioned by the angel of penetration of the neutrino and one of the things that, I speculate is, I have to be careful what I say here, one of the things that is curious for me is what is the mechanism that switched Neanderthal to a right creature 5-centered to a 7-centered left creature. There is only one obvious answer that is it had to do with the degree of penetration into the crystal because of course the mammalian penetration is horizontal whereas the human penetration is from above, and is at an angle of 90 degrees. I was told for the 9-centered being that it is 88 degrees, that is the angle of penetration of the neutrino into the crystal. Something says to me that it is this particular angle that makes it possible for left and right to be present at the same time in the configuration, whereas before it was restricted either to left or right and my assumption is this had to do with the angle of the neutrino stream…
It is a fascinating subject because in fact as a far as I understand our evolutionary process we are the first creatures that carry both a functional left and right in terms of the way, the potential of the interior of the crystal operates so tone is something that is throughout our mystical history there have always been those looking for some kind of magical representation of itness, the thing. See, when I look at the nature of tone I see the perfection of this potential to filter consciousness without anything missing. And what is so incredible about it is buried deep, deep within Is this unbelievable influence over the way in which we are going to operate on this plane and the average human being has very little access to the potential. More than anything else when I look at the potential for humanity I look at tone and I forget what it is I actually see because at the tonal level there is all this inherent extraordiness there , it’s just a matter of what happens in that version of the broken telephone when it goes from the big jump being what happens when it goes from color to line. Look, if you are not operating correctly you are going to be in deep transference, you are not going to be connected to what is the tonal potential that is there in your nature.
And tone is everything for us because the way in which it emerges in that sense and you see that when you look at the design side is that it gives us all our fundamental senses, this is our sensory potential and it is the way in which our sensory potential operates both physically in terms of the physical biological potential of the senses, the kind of thing that dietary regimen helps you work with so that you can nourish your brain system in a way that can be beneficial to your specific sensory potential. And its all here in tone. So this is really the place where you begin your journey of understanding and the thing that makes tone so extraordinary is, it’s personal. It is really personal, this is about you…this is truly the bedrock of the other, if you want to see somebody’s cognitive potential you can only find it in tone because only through tone are you going to see the leftness or the rightness, only through tone are you really going to see where, where that cognitive potential is lurking.
And again tone is what sets the table for the way in which color is going to operate. Color that is going to determine what is your dietary regimen it is going to be affected by tone to its leftness or its rightness, by your environment to its right or its left, perspective its left or right it goes on and on this is what tone does. This is the place to set the foundation of your knowledge because it is here. You want to understand the principle of cognition, you want to understand limitation and potential of our awareness centers it is here…
Tone the name says something already. When I think about tone I think about frequency because that is what it is, you’ve got a neutrino that is at speeds that are beyond our imagination 98% of the speed of light flying through this crystal there is this endless, because it is an endless stream, it is an endless frequency, it is a hum and it is a unique frequency, it is unlike any other frequency because every one of these internal structures are unique, this is where uniqueness lies if you want to look at the whole principle of the way in which life has evolved into all these diverse variations of forms, this is all the uniqueness that is imbedded in us, it is all frequency. And every single one of the se frequencies whether they are splenic, ajna, or solar plex all originate in the frequency, the frequency of tone.
See, we are frequency creatures, I think it is one of the most difficult things about taking a ride in one of these bodies is that the bodies themselves despite the fact that they have many wondrous potentials they are pretty dense in terms of being sensitive to all kinds of frequencies that we need to build machines in order to gain access too, we have this sense that we are at this moment most of us siting still which is this incredible illusion, fortunately for us I don’t think we can stomach the actual speeds we travel at. And yet it is something to grasp, everything is moving and everything is spinning, this is the by verse everything is moving, everything is spinning, everything is frequency. It doesn’t matter whether the frequency of the illusion seems to be dense like your body, it doesn’t matter it is still frequency.

Quarantine Tech Tip: How to Stream Movies/Shows/Videos with Friends and Family Online (no matter how far apart you are!)
Hi, all! Coronavirus continues to sweep the world. One way to keep socializing with your friends and family is to stream content together online.
There’s a lot of different programs that allow you to watch things together in perfect synchronization, and to use text/voice chat while viewing. Some of the basic options include:
https://www.watch2gether.com/ - where you can enjoy Youtube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, and Dailymotion content together, or shop together on Amazon using an integrated chat room. It creates an instant chat/viewing room without registration.
https://www.mycircle.tv/ - where you can watch things like YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, and possibly even twitch.tv together. It creates an instant chat/viewing room without registration. You can create a whole playlist of videos to watch.
https://www.netflixparty.com/ - an extension ONLY for Chrome, which allows you to sync up your Netflix viewing with others and message together while watching. The only downside is that you must have Netflix yourself for it to work, even if you’re just the one viewing. Another issue is that you have to create a new session for each episode you watch.
https://picarto.tv/ - where you can watch artists streaming as they screenshare and work on their projects. This is not optimized for viewing shows/movies together, but I wanted to add it because it’s fun to watch people draw and interact with artists!
But what about being able to sync up over content available on Netflix, Hulu, or even videos on your own computer desktop?
Over the last couple of days, some friends and I have been testing some of the more agile programs that allow you to have greater control over the websites you can share and the ways you can interact. Those programs include:
Kast: https://kast.gg/
TwoSeven: https://twoseven.xyz/
To stream content, both of these programs require that you 1) sign up with a free account, and 2) that you use certain technology to ensure it functions:
KAST
Kast is the new version of the old Rabbit app, available at: https://kast.gg/. You can watch movies with 100+ friends online while chatting through voice/video or text. There doesn’t appear to be a limit in terms of what you can watch through this. You can share:
Your entire screen
Any application window (website tabs, desktop programs, you name it--including Netflix and other streaming services that your viewers may not have while you do)
Your webcam
Other advantages:
Kast has several personalization features and supports a lot of languages.
You can invite people by sharing a link to your party room.
Your party room is automatically private, unless you change settings to make it fully public.
You can create multiple parties to enjoy things with different people.
You can add moderators, or kick/ban/block people.
You can access a list of other people’s public parties and search by tags to find content you want.
You can use emoji reactions in chat.
You have a lot of control over how to send or receive sound.
Their privacy policy is pretty expansive with lots of ways for you to contact them.
Kast has a help desk/troubleshooting site if you need it: https://kast.zendesk.com/hc/en-us
Kast is very quick to show content (very little loading/buffering time)
Its app is optimized for either Windows or Mac.
You can download the app here (recommended): https://kast.gg/download.html
Or if you just want to view someone else’s stream, you can use the web version through a Chrome browser. If you are joining a stream, you may have to sit through a brief advertisement to gain access to the streaming room.
Kast caveats:
You have to be 13 years of age to sign up and use the app, according to Terms of Service: https://kast.gg/legal/Kast_Terms_of_Service.htm
Kast retains the right to use any of your posted content for its own self-promotion opportunities, according to its Terms of Service.
Kast screens/monitors content according to its Terms of Service, to ensure legal compliance.
Kast technical disadvantages:
You have to download the app to actively stream content. The web version does not support voice/video streaming—it just allows you to join other streams.
It might not be the most optimized for mobile use. (In testing, my friends and I struggled to get audio to work.)
You may experience some lag at random times. But in general, we had a very smooth, in-sync stream while watching most of a movie. It glitched only once and that was because the movie file itself had a glitch.
To get movie audio to play for others, your own audio settings as a streamer MUST be set to Computer Audio. So this means if you get pings on Discord, others can hear it. Ideally, you’d also want to use the text-chat function instead of voice while viewing, to avoid feedback issues.
Depending on your tech, you might experience a black-screen when trying to share something. This didn’t happen during our test while using the app and VLC Player/Youtube/Netflix, but Kast does have a troubleshooting section on their site: https://kast.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/sections/360006131691-Video-issues
TwoSeven
Another free streaming service is TwoSeven (or, 27), available at: https://twoseven.xyz.
TwoSeven is another very impressive service that is entirely based online (no app needed to stream). Once you sign up for a free account, you can easily create a room and stream content from a variety of places, including:
Youtube
Netflix
Amazon
HBO
VIMEO
Personal (files on your desktop)
Web
TwoSeven advantages:
Intuitive, simple interface that exists fully online (no downloadable app required)
Audio/text function works while viewing video content.
You can share your webcam.
Videos stream with high-quality picture.
You can toggle who is able to adjust video controls.
People who receive the link to your stream room do not need to sign up to use the interface.
TwoSeven caveats:
Minors (people under the age of 18) are prohibited in the Terms of Service from using this website.
The service reserves the right to use any of Your Content, according to the Terms and Conditions: https://twoseven.xyz/help/terms-and-conditions.html. I would assume most likely for promotion, but it’s silent on its purposes.
The website reserves the right to kick you for not complying with its rules, but it oddly doesn’t say how it would know. Odds are, it engages in some kind of monitoring/recording of content as well.
TwoSeven disadvantages:
You need to download an extension to get the website to work well with sharing online content outside of YouTube. Otherwise, you may be left in a permanent buffering purgatory.
It’s not optimized for sharing your computer screen; the Personal option requires that you upload a video to share, and the buffering for that can take several minutes.
It requires all users to have accounts on the streaming service that they're using. So if you want to watch Netflix together, each viewer will need an account (or a Netflix profile if your account supports multiple profiles).
It cannot bypass regional restrictions for video content.
We experienced an issue where audio was out of sync with visuals on longer files.
Some people experienced audio issues depending on their headset.
There is no option to make your streaming public. So you’d have to post the link in a public place to drive traffic to it.
It is not connected to any other streams, so you’re unable to join other streaming communities through TwoSeven.
Conclusion
There are always advantages or disadvantages to any service you use. I wanted to share all this to bring awareness to the possibilities, as well as their capabilities and limitations. Nothing’s ever perfect, lol. But I hope this information can help you all find the best streaming service for your interests/needs, and that streaming can help you stay connected with friends and family!
(Note: This post was made based off of personal experiences using the Kast and TwoSeven systems and others. I’m not under any incentive to market these programs, and I welcome anyone to correct or add to my suggestions. Some regions of the world may be unable to access these programs.)
Special thanks to @lunar-magnolia and @weebleswrites for helping me test and @crystal-rebellion for alerting me to the existence of TwoSeven.

What Makes A Fuckhead?
by David R. Kendrick, late 1990s
Ever since the dawn of time, Humankind has been divided into two camps: Those who were welcome in the camps, and those who weren't. Stanley Kubrick's film classic 2001: A Space Odyssey best depicts this early schism in human ancestors: At the side of the communal water stream, the social apes whacked the antisocial apes over the heads with bones.
Over time, religious tradition, social science, and human evolution have recognized the basic division of mankind into social and antisocial camps. The antisocial have been shunned, excommunicated, pressed into exile, and even hunted as the social group has forced the antisocial from its camps, cities, and homes.
With the advent of the Internet as a force in popular culture, this schism has not only survived, but become stronger and more readily acknowledged. In the new Information Age, the antisocial face new pressures, such as flaming, Usenet death penalties, and being netcopped, and they even have a new name.
They are called Fuckheads.
But what makes a person a Fuckhead? You cannot tell a fuckhead just by looking at the e-mail address, or the Web site, or even by the newsgroups the individual frequents. A fuckhead is a person who, through the pattern of repeated behaviour when dealing with other Netizens in IRC and Usenet, demonstrates certain characteristics and a repeated inability or unwillingness to change or modify his/her behavior to conform to the social code of conduct called "netiquette."
These are the characteristics that make the Fuckhead:
A Fuckhead Must Have An Exaggerated Sense of His/Her Own Importance
The Internet fuckhead will come to the table insuperably convinced of his/her own correctness and of his/her immediacy in any debate or discussion. For example, the non-fuckhead will join a discussion cautiously, reading over the prior correspondance and offering an opinion thoughtfully. The fuckhead will come plowing in without regard to the established parameters of the debate and without regard to the existing participants.
The fuckhead, when challenged, will then state some fantastic-sounding credentials to justify and bolster the strong opinion. When challenged further, the fuckhead will usually display anger and refuse to further substantiate the presented credentials, some sort of "I already said so, and that should be good enough for you!"
At this point the Fuckhead has demonstrated an exaggerated sense of his/her own importance: He has presented an overriding opinion which, in the fuckhead's mind, should be definitive and cease all debate, and the fuckhead will be unable to understand why the other Netizens will not accept his/her opinion on sight.
A Fuckhead Must Refuse to Abide By Common Social Rules
One of the most common traits of the on-line Fuckhead is the absolute refusal to follow common social rules. For example, the fuckhead will use racist or sexist terms, will use inappropriate references to bodily functions, or will otherwise not respect the rules of society.
Fuckheads will frequently use a persecution defense when they are asked to cease their antisocial behavior. They may claim that they are being singled out because of their unpopular viewpoints, or that they are victimized by the nebulous "political correctness" movement. These claims attempt to avoid the obvious cause of the challenge, which is the antisocial behavior itself, by demonizing the reaction to the behavior.
The Fuckhead's refusal to abide by common social rules is therefore manifested. In the early chapters of history, such refusal to abide by the rules of the group would lead one to be unwelcome by the fire, or to be tarred and feathered. Now, though, it is just one more characteristic in the profile of the Fuckhead.
A Fuckhead Must Never Back Down When Caught In A Lie
It is so easy to obtain all sorts of facts on the modern Information Superhighway that it is hard to imagine anyone attempting to lie, simply because it is so easy to get caught in a lie and therefore have your credence demolished. That does not stop the on-line Fuckhead.
The on-line Fuckhead will lie about where he/she is, what he/she does, who he/she is, and what he/she knows. For example, a Fuckhead will claim to be an attorney, even though there are several on-line directories of attorneys which do not include the Fuckhead. A Fuckhead will claim to be in a certain geographic location but not be able to provide details such as the street on which he/she is located, yet the Internet provides many detailed maps and guidebooks and even services which tell you how to drive from your location to any address.
Yet this abundance of proof and truth does not deter the Fuckhead trait of mendacity. "I never said that," claims the Usenet fuckhead, yet the Usenet archive can give you chapter, verse, and message ID. And, as befits the Fuckhead, when you challenge the Fuckhead and prove that the Fuckhead has lied, the Fuckhead will usually respond with a completely irrelevant ad-hominem attack. Such is the way of the Fuckhead.
A Fuckhead Must Keep Coming Back Without Mending His/Her Ways
"Don't you ever learn?" This question is one of the most frequently asked of wayward children or oft-injured adults. But when asked of the Fuckhead, the answer is always, "No." The Fuckhead does not learn.
"Why must you come where you're not wanted?" This question has been asked of the socially deviant and challenged since the dawn of time. Yet the Fuckhead will keep coming back, over and over again.
The Fuckhead will defend his or her inflexibility by saying, "I have every right to my opinion," and "I have every right to participate in this discussion." And, in the egalitarian world of IRC and Usenet, the Fuckhead is correct. But the Fuckhead will find that other participants, who do not appreciate the Fuckhead's presence or contributions, will make use of tools such as "Ignore" commands or killfiles. These tools would not exist if it weren't for the Fuckheads.
You can count on the Fuckhead to shriek "Censorship!" when you tune out their input. You can count on the Fuckhead saying rude things about you when he/she is sure you're no longer listening. But it will never occur to the Fuckhead to approach topics and people differently, and never, ever occur to the Fuckhead to avoid venues where the atmosphere is unfriendly. This inability to exit gracefully is a distinguishing mark of a Fuckhead.
A Fuckhead Will Change His/Her Beliefs To Suit The Situation
Fuckheads are dedicated to one cause, furtherance of self; and they are committed to only one opinion, superiority of self. All other causes and opinions are secondary to the Fuckhead. The non-Fuckhead may change his/her opinions from time to time, or support or abandon causes throughout life, these changes usually come about when new information is learned, or when circumstances change. The Fuckhead, however, changes opinions and causes as readily as a non-Fuckhead might change shirts.
A good example of this change of opinion was shown by a notorious net Fuckhead in relation to a specific issue. Originally, the Fuckhead held that unsolicited commercial e-mail was evil and a nuisance. The Fuckhead put himself on the record as holding that opinion on more than one occasion. However, when the Fuckhead and his Web site were dismissed from one ISP after another for rules violations, the only ISP left over which would host the Fuckhead's Web page was a widely-reviled purveyor of unsolicited commercial e-mail. The Fuckhead then, as circumstances dictated, reversed his opinion on UCE and became a booster of that method of advertisement.
Fuckheads change friends as needs dictate, aligning themselves with and against other Fuckheads seemingly without regard to history or common sense. In fact, it is not uncommon for Fuckheads to be at war in one Usenet newsgroup and aligned in another. Rational people may agree to disagree, but the Fuckhead's limited focus and lack of loyalty allow the Fuckhead to fight with friends and agree with foes so readily that there is almost no distinction between the two. But this changeability makes the individual an unworthy foe and an untrustworthy ally -- and hence, a Fuckhead.
What Makes a Fuckhead?
The Fuckhead may display all of these characteristics, or some of them, or only one. Some may love a Fuckhead like a brother, some may think their brother is a Fuckhead. What is incontrovertible is that for all of humanity, there are people that you would rather not have to deal with, and those people, throughout history, are the Fuckheads.

K2 Technologies is aMicrosoft Workplace 365 Partnerwith almost twenty years of experience assisting businesses make use of modern technology to its fullest potential.
Microsoft assumes individuals who prepare trips with friends or organize book clubs and also social gatherings will be interested in Teams. Alexa ranking https://mnetworks.dk/om-os-2/social-ansvarlighed-csr/ 21 (As of 22 April 2020 [update] Zoom Video Clip Communications, Inc. (Zoom) is an American communications modern technology company headquartered in San Jose, The Golden State. It provides videotelephony and also online chat solutions via a cloud-based peer-to-peer software application system as well as is utilized for teleconferencing, telecommuting, correspondence course, and social relationships. If your video clip gets on during a conference with several participants, it instantly presents to all individuals, including on your own. If you hide on your own, your own video clip screen disappears from your display, leaving even more room to see other participants.
Among the best features of this is that it sustains as much as 250 participants in a telephone call, that makes it useful for big conferences. You can additionally live-stream conferences to up to 100,000 people, helpful for bigger ventures attempting to reach huge groups. The base prepare for Zoom consists of a host limitation of 100 individual, endless 1 to 1 conferences and team conferences yet a 40-minute limit on conferences with 3 or even more individuals in them. Shutterstock is another popular graphics web site giving free backgrounds to personalize Zoom and also Skype telephone calls.
It's additionally worth noting that cloud storage space is limited, so be careful how many conferences you document while utilizing the mobile app. The business has made several moves to counter these problems and also assure users about the value of protection and also privacy. This includes basic points like removing the conference ID from the title bar of the phone call so if customers share screenshots on-line the meeting isn't revealed to future misuse. If your system manager has a Pro, Business, or Venture account, you can authorize up and download Zoom onto your computer system using your work email.
Furthermore, it has to be stated that Groups takes rather a great deal of time to set up, so bear that in mind. Microsoft Teams allows you share Workplace documents and service them immediately from the work area. Slack doesn't included the option of modifying papers from the work area, so you need to download documents as well as open them in certain applications to edit them. The most important thing to recognize is that Slack's dimension restriction for submitting is 1GB, while Microsoft Teams is covered at 15GB. We really did not bother to inspect these numbers and upload gigantic files-- we were extra interested in exactly how you can collaborate in these apps.
How do you see everyone on Zoom?

They can likewise now pick better video clip by switching to the 30 frameworks per-second video mode choice.
Just like in a routine Teams meetings, you can now include your system audio when offering in an online occasion. Presently, this attribute is only available for producers and presenters signing up with from the Teams desktop computer application for Windows.
No Wire Necessary-- Security & Safety And Security In A Wireless World.
allows individuals to satisfy in person from a desktop, laptop, mobile device or video clip conferencing endpoint. It utilizes the trusted Cisco infrastructure and incorporates with Webex Teams as well as with various other famous suppliers such as Microsoft. Meanwhile, in Italy, service applications like Google's Hangouts Meet and also Classroom were one of the most downloaded and install of any classification of apps this week. Do you know when this feature for Microsoft Teams Room Equipments to join Webex and Zoom conferences will be released? Older Cisco rooms will certainly have the ability to join Microsoft Teams Meetings by means of Cisco's forthcoming CVI service.
To try it out in your next meeting, press Ctrl+ to zoom in as well as Ctrl- to zoom out. Create a welcome web link to invite people to join your org on Teams free by means of the app of your selection. When they click on the web link they'll be sent out to a webpage to demand to join your org-- so you know specifically that's utilizing the web link to join.
Microsoft is additionally coming out with versions of Teams for personal and also family usage. Microsoft has seen a 775 percent rise in cloud solutions across areas that have implemented social distancing because of COVID-19.
Is Zoom owned by Google?
Microsoft originally acquired Skype for $8.5 billion back in 2011. It was the same year that Zoom and Snapchat were founded, and Apple launched its iPhone 4S.
IT specialists can likewise access Microsoft Teams also if their firm is not certified for Groups. They can call their Microsoft companion or sales representatives for free access to the Workplace 365 E1 plan for 6 months.
So, we decided to submit an 800MB video clip documents in Microsoft Teams to give it a shot. To our surprise, the documents not just opened promptly yet likewise played within Microsoft Teams-- very impressive. It's even more budget-friendly than Slack or Microsoft Teams while providing advanced attributes such as endless message history and also sound and also video clip calls. To cut the story short, the least expensive Workplace 365 Strategy that has Teams in it is called Service Basics. It costs $5 per user per month and you need to buy a yearly strategy to get going.
Within this contrast, I want to look closer at both what these tools supply, however how the tools and also their organization result in an inevitably various platform emphasis. As an example, Microsoft Teams appears to master Office 365 based cooperation, meanwhile, Webex Teams is an incredible virtual conference system with digital whiteboarding, in addition to a concentrate on equipment. But it is essential to acknowledge what solutions as well as Office applications your service get to based upon the strategy selected. As an example, even the Free offering of Microsoft Teams provides access to shadow variations of preferred Workplace Apps, however none other services or downloadable versions of the software application. With more individuals, even more files, more conferences, more cooperation, a lot more video clip meetings, more whatever; larger companies merely need the tools to deal with and also facilitate this higher degree of cooperation and emphasis.
What is the difference between zoom and teams?
Through the Microsoft Teams Zoom Meetings tab, you will be able to start, schedule, join meetings, or share your screen. Meetings created in Teams will automatically appear on your Zoom account. This article covers installing, configuring and using the Zoom integration for Microsoft Teams.
It's a little on the expensive side but they just recently expanded their product to currently supply display sharing and also video conferencing. Google Hangouts is our pick for best video conferencing software application for small teams. The web video clip variation is called Google Hangouts as well as is what our group makes use of at We Rock Your Internet. When it comes to on the internet conference solutions, we contrast the ideal video conferencing software application and also review why some of the most identifiable companies might not be your finest option.
This is in fact cheaper than Slack's most affordable strategy (Conventional), which costs $6.67 per individual per month when billed every year. It makes the price much extra eye-catching when you take into consideration the truth that $5 invested on Microsoft Teams additionally provides you access to Workplace 365. Nonetheless, if you intend to get the most out of Microsoft Teams and also Slack, you'll need to obtain a paid strategy. In Microsoft Tools, that suggests that you require to have an account that is either Business Premium or Essentials.
As preferred and as useful Zoom has been for many organisations, the safety and personal privacy elements are still not there. Microsoft Teams transcends in the feeling that due to it's association with Office 365, there are added methods to increase your standard protection. Password freshens, credibility symbols and 2 element verification process-- Zoom just can not compete with these extra levels of safety.
According to Microsoft, people in Norway and also the Netherlands turn on video clip as well as use it the most, with about 60% of conferences in the country including video clip. Right here in the United States, the number is about 38%, and in the UK, it has to do with 47%. Microsoft Teams currently has attributes that assist make video talking easier, and extra get on the means. That currently includes history blur, which helps conceal your background during a telephone call.
You can manage whether to hide or reveal yourself in your own video clip display screen for each conference. As an existing Skype for Organisation client, the full shift to Groups may take a little time. Thankfully, the overlapping capabilities of both apps imply you do not need to do it at one time-- there are a couple of different conjunction as well as upgrade settings to consider when selecting your personal course to migration. Although Groups takes much of its DNA from Skype for Business, both are really various solutions. When you placed them side-by-side-- Microsoft Teams vs Skype for Service-- you'll see that Teams provides a lot more, bringing together files, talks, and also applications in one area for a much more full, integrated cooperation remedy.
Why is teams better than Skype?
According to a recent Forrester study, shared workspaces like Teams can save users time—from one to eight hours per user per week, depending on their role. The wins from making the Skype for Business upgrade to Teams are clear: faster, more efficient working and collaboration.
Though Microsoft Teams as well as Skype for Organisation does differ, there is some considerable overlap.
