I hate ai for all the normal reasons but especially bc it means I can't uncritically consume media now, I have to pay attention to see if there's an extra finger or some shit 😭

omg i'm sorry but i need to techsplain just one thing in the most doomer terms possible bc i'm scared and i need people to be too. so i saw this post which is like, a great post that gives me a little kick because of how obnoxious i find ai and how its cathartic to see corporate evil overlords overestimate themselves and jump the gun and look silly.

but one thing i don't think people outside of the industry understand is exactly how companies like microsoft plan on scaling the ability of their ai agents. as this post explains, they are not as advanced as some people make them out to be and it is hard to feed them the amount of context they need to perform some tasks well.

but what the second article in the above post explains is microsoft's investment in making a huge variety of the needed contexts more accessible to ai agents. the idea is like, only about 6 months old but what every huge tech firm right now is looking at is mcps (or model context protocols) which is a framework for standardizing how needed context is given to ai agents. to oversimplify an example, maybe an ai coding agent is trained on a zillion pieces of javacode but doesn't have insider knowledge of microsoft's internal application authoring processes, meta architecture, repositories, etc. an mcp standardizes how you would then offer those documents to the agent in a way that it can easily read and then use them, so it doesn't have to come pre-loaded with that knowledge. so it could tackle this developer's specific use case, if offered the right knowledge.

and that's the plan. essentially, we're going to see a huge boom in companies offering their libraries, services, knowledge bases (e.g. their bug fix logs) etc as mcps, and ai agents basically are going to go shopping amongst those contexts, plug into whatever the context is that they need for the task at hand, and then power up by like a bajillion percent on specific task they need to do.

so ai is powerful but not infallible right now, but it is going to scale pretty quickly i think.

in my opinion the only thing that is ever going to limit ai is not knowledge accessibility, but rather corporate greed. ai models are crazy expensive to train and maintain. every company on earth is also looking at how to optimize them to reduce some of that cost, and i think we will eventually see only a few megalith ais like chatgpt, with a bunch of smaller, more targeted models offered by other companies for them to leverage for specialized tasks.

i genuinely hope that the owners of the megalith models get so greedy that even the cost optimizations they are doing now don't bring down the price enough for their liking and they find shortcuts that ultimately make the models and the entire ecosystem shitty. but i confess i don't know enough about model optimization to know what is likely.

anyway i'm big scared and just wanted to put this slice of knowledge out there for people to be a little more informed.

man i hate the current state of ai so much bc it's totally poisoned the well for when actual good and valuable uses of ai are developed ethically and sustainably....

like ai sucks so bad bc of capitalism. they want to sell you on a product that does EVERYTHING. this requires huge amounts of data, so they just scrape the internet and feed everything in without checking if it's accurate or biased or anything. bc it's cheaper and easier.

ai COULD be created with more limited data sets to solve smaller, more specific problems. it would be more useful than trying to shove the entire internet into a LLM and then trying to sell it as a multi tool that can do anything you want kinda poorly.

even in a post-capitalist world there are applications for ai. for example: resource management. data about how many resources specific areas typically use could be collected and fed into a model to predict how many resources should be allocated to a particular area.

this is something that humans would need to be doing and something that we already do, but creating a model based on the data would reduce the amount of time humans need to spend on this important task and reduce the amount of human error.

but bc ai is so shitty now anyone who just announces "hey we created an ai to do this!" will be immediately met with distrust and anger, so any ai model that could potentially be helpful will have an uphill battle bc the ecosystem has just been ruined by all the bullshit chatgpt is selling

the worst part about it is that all of the free work that artists put up online is now slowly being put behind paywalls for their own protection, and the very people who have had their careers scraped off the internet to train these datasets are accused of making AI art themselves bc grifters have lifted their artstyle wholesale!!

Currently working on: I have several writing projects that are neat but are not getting finished, but primarily three things: 1) scifi project ive been working on since i was 15. I think ive managed to stay true to the original vision (star wars ripoff) while also making it somewhat good. 2) Newish high fantasy project born out of worldbuilding a four-gender system. I like how the magic system intertwines with gender i like the theme of cycles and how to break them, but ive still got a long way to go. 3) Long scifi short story about a clash of oppressive societies via toxic yuri. almost done!

Writing: I'm assuming this means completed. Several small things i don't care too much about, and one pretty good short story about a spaceship AI having a Transgender Moment (1 dead many injured)

The video above is deleted and replaced with another... very much not AI-free video by the same guy who made the first video. It is more culturally sensitive though, since, ya know, that's what the whole shitstorm was about in the first place. The complaints about the use of AI really paled in comparison.

I don't like this at all, but from what I understand aspects like "He's been making our videos for ages" (and is probably a friend who can't just be thrown under the bus for making a mistake) and "the record company already paid for this video" (and maybe doesn't want to have an amateur-made video on their YT channel bc optics idk or maybe it would set a bad precedent) played a big role, so... I guess I get it in this instance. These decisions are always more complex in practice than in theory.

Anyway, here's my favourite of the two fan-made videos in the contest:

I guess I can post this now... this is the video to the new Therion single, out 2 days ago. As you can see even from looking at the preview picture, it's AI generated, by Stable Diffusion to be precise.

So, the latest one in the sad parade* of "bands I like that have no problem with screwing over visual artists to save a few bucks and have their heads in the sand about how it might impact them to legitimize this way of making content"? Thankfully no. Christofer wrote a very long text about his opinions on AI yesterday, which are generally very critical of how the technology is used. The video above was apparently made without his input, he hadn't specified that he wanted AI and was in fact a little shocked when he got the video and didn't want to use it. But it was also too late to order another video, so he figured he'd take it to avoid not having a video at all, and also use it to start a discussion. There had apparently been some AI stuff in the "Twilight of the Gods" video too at first, but he had made them take it out.

Being made with Stable Diffusion, the video of course uses stolen art. The bot is also doing its best as a "bias automation machine", as the meme goes, by accompanying a song about Turkish mythology with imagery of Arabs, Arabic stuff, and deserts, an inaccuracy that was apparently lost on the production team behind the video, but very much not lost on Turks on YT.

Anyway, Christofer would, based on his text, like it if people thought about the future of the arts for 0.05 seconds before jumping head first into AI, and also thinks we need to "strengthen the cult around real art" to keep human-made creations alive. And complain a lot, of course. Under videos like the one above.

\* Those are by no means the only bands that come to mind, but they are the biggest ones that I am in some way interested in and that I have seen use AI openly. A couple of smaller bands I like did the same, but I don't wanna hate on them on my blog since they're basically just some random people with a hobby, not public figures. I did try to be more understanding towards them, but I don't know if I really succeeded at that.

i have to say i am very impressed by procreate dreams...... it's features are all very intriguing and impressive but i wish you wouldn't be chained to the apple ecosystem if using procreate/procreate dreams haizzzz i get that many of its features revolve around touch, but then it should be available for all tablets/mobile devices, not just apple :'( and possibly a computer port for some touch enabled drawing tablets (though that one is more of a reach)

was dreading their new event being an AI tool and the casual announcement of a subscription service so i'm pleasantly surprised by the result and their stance against it

while procreate dreams does work quite differently from most animation programs, industry or otherwise, and will be revolutionary, i doubt it'll ever truly catch on to become an industry standard bc of the restriction to the apple ecosystem and tablet bound rather than computer

I gave up on macs even before Apple Intelligence came out because they tout the machines as “do it all” but are at best catching up with intel pcs or replicating them. You can have a brand new Mac with an m series chip that will still be requiring to run games with whiskey, require a bunch of usb accessories and dongles to run with their software… bc if not that’s what their developers intend you to do or buy their apps locked features, and app subscriptions that cost monthly or yearly, or you can simply just do what everyone does. Ignore Macs.

They are wallet drainers that come out every few years and each year they update the OS they break functionality with updates that by around year 4 of owning a Mac the thing is compatible with your usb drives and all other devices become “vintage” and you’re left with the only option to download software based functions that developers put up as instruments or software features locked behind the App Stores walled garden.

The thing people don’t realize is gardens need maintenance but, how Apple does it, is they trade the land your apps and devices exist on by changing the OS every year and every couple years to claim your device as “vintage” bc they want to sell more apps that are using modern framework apis. It makes that walled garden an illusion. Think of it as a coffee tables cloth. For Apple to continue to profit it needs to replace the mat and in doing so breaks all the things already on the coffee table. This is due to the fact that they update apis on their OSes and delete the necessary ones to run older apps in favor of newer apps which aren’t necessary better, and mean you end up purchasing apps or subscriptions for functions more than once.

I had the luck of being able to understand hackintoshes and the inner workings of the Apple corporation because I’ve been around the company since they released the iPhone 3GS but never wanted to dive deeper into the ecosystem. I’m happy with my phone being an iPhone and my computer being a PC, though sourly. You don’t have to believe in the walled garden, bc it’s not there after a few years. If they truly wanted to have one, they would have never abandoned intel or amd years later, they wouldn’t have abandoned Motorola and they would have had access to foldable phone patents nowadays but they don’t, so Apple is a business at the end of it all and that’s what it should be treated as. You can still buy everything a Mac does in the real world with devices and still use either a PC or a Mac to record and edit on, just know that on Mac they will break faster, and I think the AI that will take over the world is Gemini, not ChatGPT or Apple Intelligence mostly because it’s already leaps ahead for device functionality replication, and that’s what AI is useful for, not writing tools, and not emoji creation, those are niche gimmicks.
