SAMMY AND YAZ’S FIGHT 😭😭 I legitimately am tearing up. These two mean the world to me, I’m not exaggerating. I don’t think this is the end of Yasammy, especially given how much both the crew and fandom love them. Some space apart can be good; relationships are never perfect. I hope they get through this and come back even stronger. We’re all rooting for them!

The Atrociraptors snuggling with the Handler… I can’t. Soyona PLEASE let them be happy!!! She cares so much for them and I relate a lot to that. “Terrifying creatures that could eat me but I still care for them.”

Okay Brooklynn training the atrociraptors was kinda funny. The way they all peek their heads up the moment she’s filming 🤣

MORE CERATOSAURUS YESSSS!!!! I grew very attached to them given the fact they were one of the starter Dino’s back in Jurassic World Evolution. So happy we see more of them and not just “gets killed by Scorpius Rex in the same season”

THE PUNCH TO THE STOMACH, GET HER HANDLER!!! (The toxic yuri is fighting again)

OKAY OKAY CAN I JUST TALK ABOUT THAT FACE OFF FOR A MINUTE!!!!!!! I could’ve sworn the handler was gonna get killed after Red attacked her. But the way she handled her and shut down the aggression with a few hits and diversion of the bites— She raised these animals, she grew used to calculating their movements and how to dissuade them. And her siblings coming in to back her up. Poor Red getting scolded by the Handler and her pack with little words. The Handler just leaning over to close Red’s jaws shut when she hissed at her. Ah, absolute chef’s kiss. My FAVORITE scene in this season, no doubt. 

OKAY the Carnotaurus makes sense given how “duh Biosyn would have other trained dinosaurs.”

GHOST! THE HANDLER! NOOOO! Okay I’m not kidding, I legitimately started crying… a second time. I literally cannot  deal with animal-human friendships. The way the Handler looked when Ghost was dying hit far too close to home for me. I’m gonna miss them both…

Okay, overall, phenomenal season. May ramble about it more in depth in a different post, but for now… I need to cope and do homework 🥺

so i watched the ‘we have always lived in the castle’ film and i have some thoughts (good bad & weird, spoilers ahead)

Good:

- depiction of merricats OCD is accurate and visually compelling

- weird codependent / incestous relationship between merricat and constance probably weird and incestous

- uncle julian fucks now

- also letting uncle julian be able to move his own wheelchair is a good change for the sake of him as a character bc otherwise constance would have to be in every single scene with him

- jim is the perfect asshole

- merricat’s reaction to charles’ arrival is so funny

- i know a lot of whalitc fans hate sebastian stan for charles but imo he’s kinda perfect. he’s good at effortless asshole because he is lowkey punchable. also that he’s got literally nothing intelligent or good to say ever is so accurate/his pseudo intellectualism is so accurate

- what i like about this movie is that it is very firm in its pro incest worldview 😭 charles being into constance isn’t viewed as weird and they are literally first cousins

- constance constantly one pained smile away from a mental breakdown at all times

- merrricat walking around like a little goblin everywhere is too funny

- the kitchen scene with the argument between julian and charles is fantastic wow they captured the anxiety perfectly

Bad:

- merricat looks way too put together, she’s literally a feral child who never brushes her hair and hates washing and she’s here with two perfect twisted braids and not a single flyaway ???

- why are uncle julian’s clearly humorous lines being played straight / earnestly … this man is the biggest jokester around constantly trolling people not whispering deep truths

- helen and lucille … why did they have this weird visual gag of lucille repeating everything idk it was just a bad choice. unless we are meant to think that everything is through merricat’s twisted POV??

- not enough jonas

- not enough about the fucking poisonings?!?! idk i feel like i would have kinda liked to see it go down maybe that’s just me being a goblin

- ending lacks the emotional weight it needed, the scene about the sugar was not nearly as impactful as it should be and it’s because we didn’t get enough of merricat’s murderous inner monologue. if you didn’t read the book then you wouldn’t know based on what the film told you about her, but it’s obvious from one look into her mind that she’s capable of violence

Weird:

- changing the meaning of the burying. clearly burying is a good thing in the book but in the film she only buries bad things. i get they might have wanted this as a visual metaphor for when they kill charles but ehhhhh idk

- the house is not like i imagined but i guess everyone is on a budget

- constance sleeps in full makeup

- removing thomas from the family but i guess they didn’t want to make merricat a child murderer. seems a weird line in the moral sand considering she literally killed everyone else

overall, this movie conveys the plot of whalitc, but fails at telling the story or conveying any emotion that the original text does so masterfully. if you liked the book, the movie won’t ruin anything, but it will leave you feeling very disappointed. just reread the book.

so anyways it is kinda icky how only sex scenes were leaked (even tho i get it bc they're the only scenes that would make people talk and interact) also bc the ones who leaked them are users who only post about gay sex and naked male celebrities so :/ but yeah i knew it was bound to happen i just hope that when the movie releases people will talk more about other scenes/the performances rather than just sex

like i don't mind talking about it and posting them here (with warnings!!!! i can't believe people on twitter are just posting the videos and ruining it for the people who don't want spoilers) but i remember i also received weird questions about the intimate scenes and i didn't really know how to answer :/

and ALSO how are people filming at film premieres i was so scared there were people checking everywhere. and honestly filming was the last thing on my mind like how can you enjoy the movie if ur on your phone..

anyways sorry for the rant i wanted to share my opinions

if you want horror movies ideas (and you don't care much about spoilers) i recommend you the dead meat youtube channel. It's a channel with a guy who counts the deaths in horror movies and he does known/not known movies from all eras. His videos are great cuz they give you the general vibe of a movie and if you're easily scared (as i am) it gives you most of the gore and the deaths before watching it. Also, the host is nice and rather funny (but i think he's making a pause this month)

For non-horror movies i'd say:

The Mitchells VS the Machines (2021)

animated movie (with a great animation) about a very dysfunctional but trying family fighting against the robots revolution. It's so so funny and the family is incredible.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

a movie about an elderly chinese woman living in the USA with her husband and her twenties-something daughter. Their relationship is kinda rocky, mostly because the MC is very cold toward her family (cuz she's stressed bc of her job and kinda bitter about her life). It's a multiverse story, with the MC realizing all the potential she has and trying to save her daughter. I nearly cried at the end cuz the movie is so goddamn good (and the costumes and symbolism>>>>) 100/10 (but warning for a lot of flash)

The Shape of Water (2017)

again, a 100/10 for me. It's about a mute woman who's job is to clean the floor in a secret american base in the 60's and long story short, she fall in love with one of the mutant, a fish-merman-monster kind of thing. The movie is about the satus quo with the MCs not fullfilling society expectations and standards. Again, beautiful movie, (the costumes! the light! the characters!) and the villain is very very scary.

i don't have much else, but if you like musicals (like, theatre musicals) there are some nice things on youtube. I'd recommend you Beetlejuice, cuz someone filmed the very last day it was performed on Broadway and posted the entire thing on youtube. I think the video's title is something like "very last day of black and white slime tutorial" and it's ~2H30. It has dark humor and very good songs and lights. Also, there is Heathers (Mean Girls with much more murders and incredible songs, but I still hadn't watched it) and Hadestown (hadn't watched it but it got a Tim Burton vibe to it).

Thank you so much for all these recommendations! 🖤 That's funny, because I actually do like a small sliver of horror quite a lot but I hate most of it, so something that lets you know the vibes will be quite useful :) The musical I like best is Sweeney Todd (although I prefer the Tim Burton movie which I recommend if you don't mind a bit of blood and gore), so I will definitely check out Hadestown! A couple of these are already on my list, like Shape of Water, I better get that straight away!

THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY breakdown

as always i am transcribing the little notes i took on my phone during the experience

the three things i knew about this film before i started were 1. valeris secret villain? some kind of mind-meld forced on spock? 2. worf's grandpa 3. kirk and bones sentenced to hard labor on planet hoth. other than that i went in blind

im glad they opened with CAPTAIN!!! sulu. i feel like he couldnt be there during filming but im so relieved he got parts anyway <3

also quite shocked to see janice rand?! god bless. she was like, i've undergone so much unbelievable bullshit. lemme get that star trek money. and then she did <3

the ship shaking in this movie was VERY realistic. the m,ost realistic yet. idk why they would have glass tecups in this situation though...maybe they just like to watch them break dramatically

uhura is still so beautiful in this movie. i don't know how she gets more beautiful in every star trek thing she appears in but she did it 6 times in a row. queen

first cry of the evening was when spock showed up but it was a SHORT cry because i had just cried about him in tng two days ago.

loved his little domestic spat with kirk at the beginning. the giant space between them. doing it in public. the absolute death glares. who's in the woodshed NOW (sorry for saying woodshed)

kirk being racist was an unexpected detail but i get it. you gotta have somebody being racist to nail home this story's message or whatever. i just figured it'd be bones. then again the klingons didn't kill his kid

that one bald klingon who kept eyefucking everybody he looked at. king. i know the phrase eyefucking is out of date because we overused it but there is simply no other way to describe it. he was there to leer at men suggestively and recite a batshit amount of shakespeare. and he did a great job

i had so much fun playing spot the tng set. they kept those rooms SO dark so we wouldn't recognize them but i did anyway.

the anti-gravity scene was SO so so so cool and good. like, the 90s cgi purple pepto bismol blood took me out of it a little but we have been saying every time something fucked up their little ship "how is the gravity still on rn." and the answer, always, is "it's on bc no-grav scenes cost money." FINALLY we got a no gravity scene. such a profound sense of both awe and closure

the violence was shockingly gorey too. like we had severed arms and real blood flying everywhere. idk that any of the trek i've watched so far has been quite that explicit

the scene where bones tries to save the klingon high chancellor. 10/10. bones the healer begging to be allowed to save lives. him jumping straight up onto that table and straddlign that man. him digging his hands into all that klingon blood. what a fine moment. it was a little homoerotic of that guy to grab kirk in the spiderman kiss pose as he was dying too

sarek cameo <3 it felt weird to see him alive right after he died

i did wonder why they didn't just have saavik in this film instead of valeris...i guess that saavik fans would have been mad if the send-off for the character was to make her a backstabber. but it would have felt more believable that spock be blind to her passions because she was also his protege. it also would've made the mind meld (WHICH. WOW. GETTING TO THAT) all the more tragic. valeris does a great spock eyebrow but she's not as compelling as saavik and she doesn't have the backstory so even if i hadn't had the spoilers i would have suspected her

things i didnt like: that one colonel guy saying terrorism and mr scott saying bitch. watch your mouth, gentleman.

the trial was fine (i still have trial fatigue) but i find it hard to believe klingons dont have tear ducts. what if they get something in their eyes? i loved seeing worf. i loved bones's little arthritis joke. frail little old waif of a man <3

kirk getting his ass handed to him over his personal logs is why you don't make personal logs. even funnier: their thing where they were like yeah but he has a record of [lists 1000000 crimes kirk has committed]. that was funny because it was true.

i love when they put dogs in costumes

bones collapsing in that blizzard was my ONE AND ONLY HOPE for this movie. i needed him to do it so bad so i could round out my collection and he did not let me down. true consistency. authenticity. king behavior. me when i go north fr

unexpected: both the cigar and the hot alien lady. i don't know what either of them were even doing there. she literally macked on kirk right in front of bones's salad. idk if we can count this as a close encounter though considering how short it was

i loved kirk's little fight where he nutshotted the alien. and their little prison outfits. and them snuggling up on bed together to stay warm <3 also bones being like and one day PFFFT kobayashi maru, that's it! quintessential bones behavior.

AMANDA GRAYSON RELATED TO SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE??? cmon.

mixed feelings about the shapeshifter. double kirks was great (once again: william shatner plays a woman) and hilarious especially when they smooshed poor bones. double especially when she was like yeah well i bet you always wanted to kiss yourself anyway. that little girl giving kirk a saucy wink was maybe less fun. it would have been a close encounter if they'd fucked i guess

spirk talking in the hall and their faces were soooo close together

spock's forced mind meld: i thought this was something done TO him, not something HE DID. imagine my shock. there's a little mirror spock in him after all. it was absolutely fucking ruthless. i have a little pet theory that everyone in the mirrorverse is really the same - it's only their circumstances that turned them into monsters. it's not always viable and it's not always as fun as them just being evil and edgy, but this does lend it evidence <3

loved kirk's GET DOWN MRS OBAMA moment and he got to have one twice in a row and then pull the mask off that guy like he was a scooby doo villain. incredible.

*He has freckles!! All over his body but most noticeable on his face.

*He doesn’t keep up with his bleaching. His roots will show for at least a month before he gets his hair redone.

*He also doesn’t shower daily it’s more of as needed bc he thinks he doesn’t really do anything to need one daily.

*He has a bare minimum skin care routine that consists of a generic cleanser and sunscreen.

*After long sessions of LOLOL he will wash his face to refresh himself, even if he’s late.

*He likes his science class bc he thinks it’s interesting but hate any math class bc that is bullshit.

*However regardless of the class he usually daydreams or sleeps through them.

*He goes to the library to study but just sleeps there for hours. He has been locked in over night on multiple occasions.

*He will cook meals at 3 am bc take out is no longer an option. His favorite thing to cook is soups.

*He will also skip meals bc he’s too busy but will HYDRATE. He has a big ass water bottle with LOLOL stickers he takes everywhere.

*Number 1 Artist supporter. He has massive respect for anyone who can draw/paint/sculpt traditionally or digitally.

Hm, maybe my memory is poor but I swear that I've seen you reblog Tolkien stuff (or maybe I'm mistaking it and it's all Legend of Zelda posts?)

But there I was talking as if you'd read the books or watched the movies!

I watched the movies so long ago that I forgot a great deal of them and I'm determined to finish the books before I re-watch them so that I can experience the whole original story of LotR without the film giving away the parts I'm still reading.

You'll find out more about Boromir in the first book and the very beginning of the second book. As for Denethor, he appears in the first chapter of the third book (and he had me just a little bit salty, to put it mildly.) You'll also see the Fellowship in all three books!

I'll be honest and say the only reason I have time to read at all is downtime at work and really long wait times for public transit. And I've only just recently began branching out from reading only Discworld to other books that I either read in high school or heard about but didn't get a chance to read yet. I'm keeping track of my reading on an app called StoryGraph, which lets you record start and finish dates and get recommendations based on what you've already read!

I mostly just use it as a reading diary of sorts. But if I ever get through my to-read pile (good luck, it's long) I might see what it recommends me. But even still, I usually go by friends and family's suggestions for any books that I might be interested in.

Haha, no you're right, I have reblogged LotR stuff. I have basically no fear of spoilers, if only bc I have been spoiled on stuff in the past only to not realize it was a spoiler and still get surprised when I reach it in the story anyhow (and also I think the weird culture of "no spoilers" is silly anyhow, bc like, sometimes the fastest way to convince me to look into something is to show me major spoilers that baffle me so much I need to figure out how a story could function to accommodate what I know out of context with the new knowledge).

But no worries, I totally get where the confusion came from. I know just enough LotR from osmosis that I can kinda hold a conversation about it. Your excitement for the stories does get me excited as well, and I really am looking forward to reading them when I can make the time.

Also I feel you on having free time to read things. I think that's part of my issue, is a lack of free time (or energy), but at some point I also developed this weird environmental thing where I couldn't focus on reading if I could hear human voices or if there was too much background noise of a certain type? Which, given that I still live with my family and they are all very noisy (and also assume that they can just start talking to me whenever if I'm sitting in plain sight, which is more or less everywhere where I like to sit to read), makes it hard to actually find the sort of quiet I need to read when I do have the energy for reading.

I used to be a voracious reader too, I was basically always reading a book from middle school through high school, sometimes multiple books. And I used to be able to read in the middle of a school's worth of noise, so I have no idea why all the academic reading I had to do in college messed with my reading habits so much. It's not that I haven't read anything--I made it through Dracula all on my own a year before Dracula Daily happened, just because I was interested in it and wanted to read more classics. And I've made my way through about a third of the complete works of Lovecraft, which are easier for me bc they're all short stories more or less (though I keep stalling reading the next story bc I know it's one of the "almost a novella" length stories). And of course, The Hobbit.

A lot of my free time is limited though, especially since I'm very particular about how things need to be if I'm to do something (which is partly the house situation, partly my brain is my own worst enemy sometimes). I often have to choose between art, video games, writing, general decompressing (i.e. interwebs), or watching something, and usually video games or art/writing win out if I don't need to decompress, because I can deal with being interrupted or ignoring outside noise when playing a game better than I can reading, and no one bugs me when I'm working at my computer generally.

Which hmmm. Actually, I think that might actually have more to do with it than anything, because now that I'm thinking on it I have read a metric ton of manga over the past several years, which I usually use various websites for (and am therefore at my computer). Granted, that's a slightly different storytelling medium than a text-based book, but considering I can finish a completed manga series in roughly a two-week span, I don't think my issue is with focusing on reading so much as it is getting interrupted or having too much background noise...hmmm.....

Well this was an excellent conversation actually, I think I might have figured out part of the reason my brain wants to strike when I do try to read, and if I can get to the root then I can maybe figure out some sort of workaround to trick myself back into reading text-based books again. Which is great, because I have so many books in my to-read pile, and I do want to check out the Discworld books at some point (which I've never read, but they are also books that I just know from out-of-context things that I will love), and I really do miss reading as a leisure activity. So, thank you for prompting this discussion!

I have once again embarked on the epic quest of watching as many Bollywood movies as I can stomach and I keep wanting to annoy my friends with the reviews so now I'm going to come here to get my thoughts out of my silly little head.

If anyone also follows @romanceyourdemons please lower your expectations immediately I will not be as insightful and succinct and awesome and intelligent as they are I'm just gonna gush.

Anyway Here's Agneepath (2012). Massive Spoiler Alert.

I was not expecting to like this movie as much as I did. I'm a big fan of Hrithik Roshan so I have been aware of Agneepath for a long time, he was super stoked to be a part of it etc, but the story didn't seem like one that I would really vibe with. 'Boy watches father violently murdered, decides to devote rest of his life to revenge, more at six' isn't really my bread and butter but BOY howdy was I wrong!!

Assorted things I loved:

Hrithik Roshan's beautiful face. It has been too long, my love, I'm so sorry I've been obsessed with Aamir Khan recently.

Priyanka Chopra *not* playing a Mary Sue. When she plays a character, she does SUCH a good job and I love to see it. She's so freaking pretty and good at dancing come back to India plz maam.

Katrina Kaif was there for literally one dance number???? She went off, but lordy that's an expensive dance number. I kept thinking she was going to come back, but no.

This is a dark movie with dark themes, much violence and swearing. Hrithik and Priyanka are clearly living together as an unmarried couple in the slums where Priyanka's mom is a prostitute. Do they kiss? Don't be ridiculous, staring at each other intently is all we can do. Never change Bollywood ily.

Hrithik Roshan's Angry Head Shake. Viju (his character) is So Mad all the time and has to keep it in and I LOVE how tortured he can make his eyes while the rest of his face stays calm. It's incredible.

Okay actual story things. I thought it was so interesting the nuance this film managed. Viju is not a good guy. He kills a man-sorry-police officer (AS A CHILD) to cover up the fact that he didn't identify the local Big Crime Boss in a lineup for a murder that he witnessed. He does a lot of bad things, ends up as that crime boss's first lieutenant, etc, but gosh dang it you root for him bc everyone he's moving against is worse.

Like, you know from the beginning that he's doing all of this so that he can gain the power he needs to put himself on level footing with the man who killed his father. And that guy is Super Extremely Bad, so you want Viju to succeed. You know that he aligned himself with this other crime boss bc he witnessed him say that he hated the man who killed his father. And you know that, even though he supports Crime Boss's activities, he gives all his money to charity and still lives in the slum that took him in as a child when his mom abandoned him (after he murdered a cop).

ALSO, he is playing all of the ends against the middle. Informing on Crime Boss to the cops, informing Crime Boss about the cops movements, stopping Father Killer from encroaching on Crime Boss's territory, promising Father Killer a foothold in Crime Boss's territory--Viju is everywhere and in everything.

He is full of contradictions, and that's what makes the story work. He is a brutal man because he loves so deeply and radically. He has a heart of gold that cannot allow injustice to stand, so he kills and lies and helps move drugs bc he sees it all as a means to an inevitable and inescapable end. He will kill the man who killed his father, he will free his hometown from that man's influence and he will do whatever he needs to do to get him to that point.

The film doesn't ask you to agree with Viju. It's pretty clear about the fact that he has 'fallen from grace' and landed on a path that only brings more death and violence and hurts the people he loves. It doesn't ask you to think that Viju is correct. But it does ask you to understand how this man could find himself in this position. How he could decide that this was what needed to be done.

It shows how partially effective the police are, how he's willing to work with them, but doesn't trust them to accomplish what he needs to get done. It shows how he does what's necessary to gain respect and power in the underworld but when given the opportunity, he rejects the morals of it (he frees a bunch of girls that were going to be sold at auction). It shows his mother railing against who he's become for the whole film, but in the end, recognizing that he did manage to do a good thing.

Gosh it's so heartbreaking, he finally kills the man who killed his father (in the exact same way his father was killed, love that symmetry), frees his home from his reign of terror and is dying in his mother's arms-- and this scourge of the underworld looks up at his momma with the saddest sweetest eyes and asks her if he did the right thing. She has disagreed with his choices every step of the way, but the result was, in fact, the right thing. He finally gets his mothers' acceptance.

Anyway its a well done film that asks a lot of interesting questions and doesn't force answers to them down your throat, just lets you sit in the questions. And that's a quality I like in a movie. Action sequences were great, characters were consistent and built well. Fricken loved it.

I disagree that bi mike wouldn’t make sense within the show’s canon. I strongly believe it would make MORE sense within the show’s canon for many different reasons, and that 99% of the evidence gay mike truthers try to twist to say explicitly confirms gay mike can coexist and be used to support bi mike without much adjusting. I think when you carefully analyze seasons 1 through 4 it’s pretty clear that mike had genuine romantic feelings for El at the beginning of the story. And there’s a lot of subtle things that support a bi mike reading. I think a significant portion of aggressive anti-bi mike theories are rooted in either biphobia, a misunderstanding of the nuances of what it means to be bi, or a desire to avoid having to accept mike’s early canon romantic feelings for El (enshrined into the scripts) cause that would mean accepting that it’s a love triangle. I think gay mike makes sense but it is in no way the only sound theory. And I’m not talking about headcanons, I’m talking about the text of the show

ok i know i said earlier i would respond to this in full but honestly there is WAY too much i could get into and this topic has been discussed to death at this point and i’m not interested in starting discourse again, so i’m really gonna try to be brief (spoiler alert, i failed). first of all, here’s my own gay mike analysis from months ago, back when i personally hadn’t seen any actual analysis about it yet and decided to just go through and analyze the show myself. many others have written much more thorough and articulate analyses, so i encourage anyone to seek those out if you’re really interested in developing an informed opinion about it. but if you’re already convinced one way or another, i’m probably not going to change any minds here, because this has all been said before.

the one thing i’m actually going to try to address here is the claim that mike was at some point genuinely romantically attracted to el, because as far as i can tell, that is the ONLY actual argument FOR bi mike. i haven’t seen anyone ever give evidence or try to argue that mike has shown attraction to any other specific woman or to women generally. if i’m wrong about that, please point me to that analysis (don’t tell me about bi flag colors around him though bc those three colors show up together everywhere in the show and are not specific to mike in any way, i don’t think that’s relevant “evidence”). also, i’m not looking at the scripts here, because i’m really only interested in ACTUAL CANON and the literal content of the show itself overrides any partial, text drafts of it, which is what scripts are. they are written for the specific purpose of filming the show and do not provide full and complete context (and what we are TOLD in this show does not always line up with what we are SHOWN).

just to be absolutely clear, i think that (disregarding the mountains of both textual and subtextual evidence of his LACK of attraction to women) mike having shown genuine romantic attraction to even one woman would be enough for him to be legitimately canonized as bisexual, but in all my understanding and analysis of the show, he has not.

from what i understand, bi mike truthers believe that mike had genuine romantic feelings for el in the earlier seasons that either faded over time or just never evolved past the initial childhood crush stage. i’ve addressed the latter idea before (in a post i can't find rn), but to sum up, crushes on people of a different gender, especially in youth, and during times when one is unsure of or figuring out one’s sexuality are COMMON among gay people. having a childhood crush is not the same thing as having genuine romantic feelings, and therefore is not valid evidence toward any particular sexuality. the insistence that it is concrete evidence of bisexuality is rooted in homophobia and a fundamental misunderstanding of the nuance of gay identity.

the first claim though, that he did have genuine romantic feelings in the beginning, but they faded over time, is what i’m going to focus on. i touched on this in my analysis linked above, but i’m going to try to explain again here. mike’s feelings for el have always been demonstrated with extreme consistency throughout the seasons. after their initial meeting and once mike learns to trust her, each time mike has been in a position to tell el how he feels about her, from season one all the way through to season four, he has behaved in the exact same way: he has struggled to put his feelings into words, refusing to outright claim romantic feeling or intent, and ultimately failed to communicate with el in a way she understands.

similarly, when faced with expressing romantic affection toward or about her, he has behaved with confusion, discomfort, and outright rejection of others’ assumptions of his romantic feelings. (read the analysis for more specifics on this)

each of these times is also rife with familial coding and parallels that subtextually explain WHY he is struggling to either voice or demonstrate romantic attraction. for just one specific example, in the first season, right before their first kiss, mike begins to excitedly describe the relationship that the two of them are about the have with each other (in not so many words) as one of a brother and sister. when el correctly infers this implication from his words, he grows confused, because he had been told previously by lucas, dustin, and even nancy, that his feelings for el were romantic. but he relents, and agrees that that is what his description meant. immediately after their first kiss, during which el is dressed in his sister's clothes, and which mike initiates when he can't find the words to express romantic attraction to her, his first word is.... "nancy." and later, when el is weak from killing the lab people who've been chasing them, mike repeats his earlier promise: that when all this is over, his family will become hers.

this is one thing that i genuinely can’t understand when it comes to the idea that mike ever truly liked el romantically. almost (if not) ALL of their interactions, especially in season one, have some sort of parallel to a familial relationship for one or both of them, on top of many of their interactions blatantly referencing the concept of the two of them being like family to one another. the absolute volume of these instances and the unyielding consistency of this pattern, again, beginning from the very first episode of season one and continuing all the way through season four, means that it is undoubtedly intentional. with that in mind, i cannot see any reading of their relationship that leaves room for genuine romantic feelings, when ALL of the subtext, FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, overwhelmingly presents them as family.

i’m not going to get way into the subject of compulsory heterosexuality because i could go on forever and i don’t want to, but the timeline of events in el and mike’s relationship arc makes it very clear that that's what’s happening. for el, her arc of independence is (not solely, but still) intrinsically tied to her relationship with mike. for mike, his struggle with his sexuality, specifically his lack of attraction to girls concurrent with his present attraction to boys (MOST presently Will), coincides directly with his relationship arc with el. i’m just going to link a couple of my screenshot posts where i've attempted to demonstrate this, bc i can't find it in me to explain all the nuances of comphet and the complex way these three characters' narratives have been intertwined (i'm bad at tagging so i can't find many, but here, here, here)

you might want to argue against my above points with scenes like the snowball dance, where he calls her beautiful and kisses her, or the make out scene in season three. but both the familial coding/parallels and the overarching themes of forced conformity (aka compulsory heterosexuality) associated with the snowball in my view completely changes the context behind the surface narrative of a “sweet romantic moment,” especially when you consider the coinciding narrative of mike’s relationship with will and the subtext of what that dance means for both of them. similarly, that make out scene, which can also be read as further evidence of mike’s discomfort with physical affection with el, as well as the overall arc of their entire season 3 relationship, is presented to be directly relevant to (specifically, in direct contrast with) mike’s evolving relationship with will, which IS genuinely romantic.

when i say that bi mike would be bad representation, this is what i mean. his “attraction” to el is consistently directly related to and contrasted with his relationship with will, coding his feelings for girls (most specifically the one girl for whom he has ever shown potential for romantic attraction) as lesser than his feelings for boys (specifically will, but ALSO OTHER MEN). bi rep that prioritizes and values attraction for one gender AT THE EXPENSE of attraction for another feels like an extremely problematic representation of bisexuality, if that's really what they are trying to portray. and this is not even getting into the countless subtextual clues that mike specifically DOES NOT LIKE GIRLS. (our son with a girl?, it’s not my fault you don’t like girls, el? sorry not interested, disgusted face next to “women in science,” blatant lack positive of response to “phoebe cates only hotter,” women’s room GET OUT, boys only, blatant and continued confusion over lucas and dustin’s attraction to max, "trying to solve the mystery of the female species" *LOUD BELCH* etc etc these are just off the dome and these are things that DO NOT WORK as queer coding if mike IS attracted to girls but VERY MUCH DO if he is gay. and there are SO MANY of them. more than that, if he is attracted to girls, then they are examples of the show consistently belittling that attraction, which again feels like a pretty shitty way to do bi representation)

god there’s so much more to this, but i can’t get into every little thing because it would take forever. literally there is SO MUCH evidence against it that i genuinely feel that the narrative would not make sense anymore if mike were revealed to be bi in season 5.

just to address a couple other things you said: i think the reason anti bi mike theory might sometimes come off as aggressive is because when one actually analyzes the entire content of the show, the evidence for specifically gay mike is OVERWHELMING and the claim that there is just as much evidence for bi mike remains unsupported, unsubstantiated, and at a certain point comes off as just willfully ignoring canon and even, at times, homophobic. i always see claims that some gay mike analysis is biphobic, and yet i have never seen any evidence of this. the claim that mike is not attracted to women, despite having been in a relationship with one, IS NOT biphobic. the claim that he is not bisexual, despite many people believing he is and wanting that representation, is NOT biphobic. the claim that his feelings for el have always been platonic and not romantic is NOT biphobic. it is an analytical conclusion based on the content of the show itself. i don’t doubt that some gay mike truthers have been biphobic, but i have not seen any actual gay mike ANALYSIS that is specifically biphobic (if you can provide concrete evidence, i will recant this, but i know that i and others have been careful not to resort to any sort of stereotyping or attempts at “analysis” that are rooted in biphobia). conversely, the claim that mike being in a romantic relationship with a woman and behaving romantically with her is PROOF that he is bisexual IS inherently rooted in homophobia and again, a misunderstanding of the nuance of what it means to be gay. i know (or assume, i guess) that most bi mike truthers aren’t outright thinking this way, and really believe mike’s romantic feelings to have been genuine, but as i and many others have tried to explain, when you do what the show is constantly telling you to do and look deeper than the surface level narrative, all of the canonical evidence from mike’s relationship with el actually explicitly and unambiguously points to the fact that his romantic interactions with her were NOT a result of genuine attraction, but rather a result of compulsory heterosexuality and a part of the natural process of figuring out his sexuality.

you also claim gay mike theorizing could come from "a desire to avoid having to accept mike’s early canon romantic feelings for El" but the fact is that it's not a desire for mike not to have had feelings for el (that assumption playing into the idea that gay mike truthers simply don't want him to be bi, hence the claims of biphobia) but what's actually happening is analysis that leads to the conclusion that he canonically did not have romantic feelings for el. the misconception is that gay mike truthers are simply projecting their own desires onto the text instead of what they're actually doing: critically analyzing it. i'd argue that bi mike truthers are the ones who want to avoid having to accept mike's lack of attraction to women, despite all of the evidence for it.

i've read a lot of analysis on here, from a lot of different perspectives, and i can truly say that every single comprehensive, good faith analysis of mike’s character i've ever seen has come to the same conclusion. he’s gay.

I absolutely loved and am blown away by just how different across the spiderverse is from into the spiderverse. I love both films so so much for very different reasons but it was so much more adult in their struggles and their problems. it wasn’t better, per se, but it was amazing in it’s own way. everything about it was amazing and I can’t even begin to imagine anything of what they’re going through. all of them.

the beginning sequence with gwen was so ANGSTY I loved how she introduced miles it was so good and then the fight with her dad was so bad I actually cried in the theatre it was that good. and then fight between MILES and HIS parents and then we find out he’s only 15?? and he’s already going through so much?? they expect so much from him but he started out as spiderman when he was 14 and he’s been living a double life since like fuck. I thought he was older than that. he’s so precious though and you can tell that the pressure if getting to him in some of the most humane scenes I’ve seen in animated media, which I am absolutely loving.

then when he found out why gwen was actually there and then AGAIN when he found out that she wasn’t trying to protect him but in fact earth-50101 because of the canon events with the cop, just the absolute BETRAYAL that he felt in that moment and how he just needed to get away and cope and deal but he couldn’t, because he was missing and can we just talk about how he found all of this out within a few hours?? like the whole movie took course over a couple of hours and we’re just expected to what. be fine with that? honestly how miles didn’t cry I don’t know. 

then when miles was going through the go home machine I was on the edge of my seat bc 42?? that's not his world huh?? and then he WENT there are rio had weird eyes and then it CLICKED and FUCK it was so good what the hell and THEN when he went upstairs and uncle aaron looked at his phone it was like. shit. oh god. so THATS whats happening. and THEN, PLOT TWIST, since there's no spiderman in that universe jeff died and miles became the PROWLER but it does raise the question  was he ever supposed to be spiderman? in the original universe of 42? or was he always destined to be the prowler but on a chance encounter ended up destroying the lives of so many people by becoming a second spiderman in a completely different universe?? because we KNOW that he's an anomaly and we KNOW that he wasn't meant to become spiderman and because he DID the 1610 peter parker died and he basically replaced him and screwed up 1610 because he inadvertently created the Spot(love what they did with the bagel) so. was he originally supposed to become the prowler??  in universe 1610?

It’s messing with me god.

I’m actually crying though across the spiderverse was so good and incredible and I’m screaming throwing a fit throwing up it was so cool and so good and I can’t. I just. woah. holy fuck. 

but also characters I loved them all and the MUSIC was so good and matched the scenes so well and the OST WAS INCREDIBLE thank you daniel pemberton for this masterpiece and the ART. the art was so good. it was incredible and outstanding and amazing and holyyyyy shit so. I loved all the different styles they incorporated and yeah all the easter eggs were so cool but the art style overall was incredible.

cannot wait for beyond the spiderverse and the story they continue to tell.

Casita, Isabela, and omg I have taken too many screenshots (aka I take this film again and go 'LOOK! LOOK AT THIS!!!!! :D')

So I am back on my nth rewatch of Encanto, and I am STILL picking up new details about the casita (which I always love). This time I'm looking at the towers of the casita.

I say towers; I'm talking about Bruno's tower, but also Isabela's and Pepa's rooms. Why am I counting theirs as well? Because they form three of the four corners of the house, and are also notably the only three rooms to be outwardly identifiable to their owners.

As you can see, three noticable rooms: Bruno's tower, Isabela's tower, and Pepa's room (notable by its weather vane).

Let's take a closer look at those back two.

SO, couple of things here, but let's start with Bruno's tower- it's covered in an abundance of ivy (I suspect either naturally, or not a concious choice of Isabela's). (the ivy is also a good indicator of the abandonment of Bruno's room, and the time that's passed etc etc etc). But under that ivy...

...there is a sundial, aka, a clock, which fits in with his whole see the future/hourglasses/time vibe. And speaking of hourglasses...

Look what's around the top of his tower! Lotsa little hourglass tiles/relief for the Madrigal with the future vision. I like it!

But he's not the only one who has symbols of their gift on their tower! Nope!

What's that we've got here? Raindrop patterns on Pepa's room? Yes please!

BUT!!! DID YOU NOTICE THE THUNDERCLOUDS AND LIGHTINING BOLTS AT THE TOP OF THE PATTERN TOO? BECAUSE I SURE AS HELL DID NOT WHEN I FIRST PICKED THIS UP AND THAT IS AWESOME.

(Also shoutout to whoever did the detailing on the wood close up here bc that is neat esp with peeling paint and all the patterning and texture and yay brain go happy brrrr)

Anyhoo,

This brings us onto Isabela's tower, and why I wanted to make this post in the first place:

Isabela's tower reflects her, and her arc.

At the start of the film, we see it pink as anything, covered (practically smothered) in flowers as Isabela is with her obligation to be perfect. I've seen a lot of people talk about how Isabela echos Abuela's dress colouring by being more purple/pink than the blue of her own side of the family, but most people don't notice that's exactly what's showing in her room. Take a closer look at the top of her tower and...

...it's blue. Under all those flowers, the mask she wears, it's always been the blue of her family. (also shoutout to the flower roundels on the wall there, and also the flower metal thing on the top as non-gift generated decorations of isabela's gift, completing the tower trio)

This blue part of her is barely visible until What else can I do? where it becomes more on display, and that part of her tower is also seen again at the end of the movie as the casita is rebuilt. A blank slate. But it's always been blue, right at the top, always there, just hidden, and that tugs at my heart no end.

(on a lighter note, I have to say there was no good screenshot for that last pic btw. I may have collapsed into a puddle of tears from laughing at the smear frames and omg Isabela WHY are you UPSIDE DOWN???!!)

If they do any further series/film etc, it'd be interesting to see what they do with further colour themes on her tower etc. And as always, I can't wait to see what other little details they have or will tuck away everywhere.

Also as a completely different note, I can't quite decide if that top bit of Isabela's tower stretches back further after the casita is rebuilt or not because no I am not looking for possible indications that Mirabel finally got a room of her own too and I know that Jared has said their are still spoilers/hints/secrets us fans haven't picked up on yet. It looks like it might, but there isn't enough detail to know 100 for certain.

i can't stop thinking about photographer buck so...

It’s mostly a joke, when Eddie first mentions photography to him. Buck's editing a photo on Lightroom on his phone between calls, a photo of Eddie and Chris at the beach.

It's beautiful and Eddie loves it. Buck took it without them even noticing, the photo being even more special that way. Eddie is laughing at something Chris said, they're both wet from playing on the ocean and they have sand on their arms, hands and shoulders. The sun shining down and making the both of them look golden. The rays of sunshine forming almost a halo around them— the waves at the back making the picture even more breathtaking.

Eddie's half joking, half serious, when he tells Buck to buy a fancy camera to take pictures with.

He didn't think Buck would actually listen to him.

Next thing he knows, Buck's instagram becomes full of digitized film pictures of the 118, their family barbeques at the Grant-Nash's house. Pictures of Chris and Eddie at the beach, of Jee playing at the park, of Maddie laughing at one of Chim's jokes. A lot of pictures of Eddie, too.

Pictures of Eddie, of him rolling his eyes with a hand held out and half covering his face. A picture of Eddie mid-way through a laugh, an easy smile on his face.

And he swears, never before a camera has made his stomach do back-flips the way it does when Buck is trying to take a picture of him.

“I swear, I’ll break that thing if you don’t get that out of my face,” he snaps at him. They're in Eddie's kitchen and he's trying to follow a recipe Linda sent him last week, Buck being an enormous distraction and not helpful at all.

"I like capturing people in crisis, Eddie." Buck smirks, all smug and teasing. Eddie kinda hates him a little bit.

Except for the part where he doesn't hate him at all.

Buck grins, bright and unapologetic and Eddie loves him. So much he aches with it.

"Yeah, okay. Whatever." Eddie rolls his eyes, trying to suppress the fond smile that it's already forming on his face.

Later, he'll see the picture Buck takes. Eddie will be covered in flour, it'll be everywhere. In his arms, his clothes, his cheeks. The kitchen around him a mess of ingredients and half ass attempts at a meal. Eddie looking down with a small, shy smile. The warm, almost orange glow of the kitchen light making him look all soft and golden. Later, he'll see that picture and will think oh.

Oh.

He sees me the same way I see him.

Oh.
